Almost every woman in North America has some form of a relationship with their daughter and/or
mother in their lifetime. However, these relation can vary in amiability and affection. Whether due
to similarities or differences in personality or circumstances in life, mothers and daughters can be
close confidants or fierce foes. These familial relationships have been studied in part by Marianne
Hirsch and Sharon M. Varallo in their essays on the familial gaze and the genre of family
photographs, respectively. In this essay, I will be using the work previously done by Hirsch and
Varallo to analyze two different mother daughter relationships presented in the television show
Gilmore Girls. The two relationships differ vastly in their outward appearance, however both
relationships show underlying characteristics of both friendship and animosity. Overall, these two
mother daughter relationships demonstrate that the love between a mother and a daughter can be

Executive Summary
This report provides analysis and evaluation of a newly designed wastewater treatment facility for
Sand Valley, Nevada. Analysis will include Biological OxygenDemand (BOD) along with total,
volatile, and fixed suspended solids. Methods for analysis will include the Winkler Test for BOD
and a Hatch test for the suspend solids.
The report finds BOD levels meet the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)
permit renewal standards. Results for suspended solids shows an opposite trend. Suspended solids
increase throughout the course of the water treatment. This does not meet NPDES standards.
Further suspended solids test will be needed to insure a minimal amount of error. If the same trend
continues, the facility may need to be redesigned to meet NPDES standards.

Throughout this exercise, I will review Malice in Wonderland: Dreams of the Orient and the
Destruction of the Palace of the Emperor of China written by Erik Ringmar (2011). This historical
analysis is particularly interesting to me as it portrays different western accounts of the
Yuanmingyuan, which was once a powerful historical symbol of the superiority of the Chinese
Empire; to its wilful destruction to demonstrate French and British supremacy. The destruction of

Ozone is a highly oxidative chemical known to be capable of degrading many types of organic
contaminants, including both chemicals and organisms. It is known in the grain industry to be
useful for disinfecting cereals without affecting quality of the cereal. This includes microbial
inactivation, killing pests, degrading certain pesticides and fungicides, and mycotoxins (Tiwari et
al. 2010). Ozone also has an important role in the treatment of wastewater for similar reasons. It is
used in the treatment train at both the Alfred Merritt Smith and River Mountains treatment plants
in Las Vegas (SNWA 2014). The ozonation processes in these plants kill off bacteria and

My diversity experience began on November 12, 2016 in Wilmington, North Carolina at the
