Rhetorical Analysis Of John M Barry
John M. Barry uses the various different types of rhetorical strategies to characterize scientific
research by comparing the opposites of both certainty and uncertainty, by referring to life in the
woods as a metaphor towards the mind and creation of science, and a series of rhetorical questions
that shows the process and mind of the scientists portrayed in John M Barry s essay. John M.
Barry describes certainty as a way to create strength and gives one something upon which to lean .
Uncertainty is something described as a way to create weakness and makes one tentative if not
fearful...may not overcome significant obstacles. This opens up the essay to the audience so that
they can have the ability to agree or disagree with the statements made in the first paragraph. He
further on describes that being a scientist means to have the courage to accept indeed, embrace
uncertainty. That s why these statements were included in the first paragraph: to show that one
major characteristic of scientist and scientific research is to be able to accept uncertainty/ the
unknown.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main point he makes is that In the wilderness, the scientist must create...everything. This one
line puts into a few words what Barry s view are on scientific research and their role today. Barry
describes the work ethic as tedious and grunt that begins with figuring out what tools one needs and
then making them. This makes the audience aware of the work that is put in and the hardworking
views as Barry describes the scientific research in a positive

The Effect Of Nitrogen On The Growth Of A Sapling Essay
Introduction
Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plant growth, being a key component in the process of
photosynthesis and is a part of the chlorophyll molecule. Nitrogen acts to increase the amount of the
green chlorophyll in plant leaves which allows them to absorb the optimum amount of sunlight by
increasing the surface area of leaves to hold the chlorophyll and optimum amounts of nitrogen in a
plant allow it to produce enough foliage in order for it to successfully photosynthesise efficiently,
therefore producing the right energy it needs to function.
I am interested to see how the levels of nitrogen in the young saplings, measured from the leaves of
randomly chosen plants, affects the rate at which they grow around the radius of their trunks and
whether there is a significant relationship between the two. I would expect that certain levels of
nitrogen are the most optimal for the growth of a sapling where enough is present to allow the most
efficient production of photosynthesis in its leaves as the energy produced in this process would
allow growth throughout the rest of the plant. At very low levels I could expect growth rates of
saplings to be very slow or not at all and as the nitrogen levels in a sapling s leaves increases for
the growth rate to increase to a certain extent. There would however be likely a point where an
increase in nitrogen levels does not mean a higher growth rate as too much can be detrimental to
other components in a sapling s health,

Cheerleading Is A Sport Essay
Do you believe cheerleading is a sport? Many people think cheerleading is not a sport,
cheerleading is a sport, it has everything that defines it as one, they only have 2 ВЅ minutes to
show everyone what they have been working on for months. It s rigorous just to make all those 8

Although, many say cheerleading isn t a sport it is here s why. The definition of the word sport: is
an activity that involves physical movement and skill. In cheerleading all those tirelessly long
practices that s where all physical movement comes in. The skill part comes in when we do the
gravity defying stunts. They only have 2 ВЅ minutes to perform and show everyone they re the

Spallina. But it s not about pop poms and skirts. We work really hard. If these girls are not
athletes, I don t know who is. When cheerleaders compete they only have one chance to show
they ve got. You have one performance, just one shot to make it the best you can. As athletes we
practice late nights and we also practice the day before and the day of a competition. On friday
night football games, we perform at halftime that s our practice for the competition the next day. ...

Unless care is taken, alcohol ads targeted to young legal drinkers also may appeal to those under the
legal age. Because of significant constitutional issues, the Commission continues to recommend
enhanced selfregulation to address concerns about alcohol advertising s appeal to minors.
In addition to self regulation of advertising, a comprehensive alcohol policy also must address the
means by which teens obtain alcohol for consumption. Younger minors obtain alcohol primarily
from noncommercial sources; this social availability can be addressed by changing adult attitudes
about teen use. Changes also are needed to reduce underage alcohol purchases from commercial
outlets, a source of alcohol for older minors. Support is needed for the efforts of organizations that
can conduct rigorous field studies of the efficacy of alternative approaches to improving
enforcement of minimum age purchase laws.
The Commission will continue to monitor alcohol industry self regulation, particularly the
implementation of the new placement standard requiring that adults constitute at least 70% of the
audience for advertising. Additionally, the Commission will monitor the effectiveness of thirdparty
review programs and will continue to evaluate new advertising programs that may have undue
appeal to underage consumers.

Overview Of Anxiety
It is natural for a person to have a sense of stress and worry throughout the their daily
experiences. Whether it has to do with work, school or finances. Surprisingly it is also natural
for some people to experience fear, nervousness, and anxiousness out of nowhere. People may
think it is abnormal to have a rush of emotions out of the blue, but this is something a lot of
people in society have to deal with on a daily basis. The combination of these emotion reflexes is
what is known as anxiety. Anxiety is a mental disorder that makes a person have sudden unwanted
feelings of fear, anxiousness, and worrisome. Having an anxiety episode is something the can
frequently occur and take a troll on a person s mental and physical health. Anxiety is... Show more

They still have clear remembrance of what happened at the time and they may feel like it is
haunting them. Types of events that can lead to Post traumatic Stress Disorder are car accidents,
any type of abuse, military combat, etc. It is most common for veterans to have PTSD. Veterans
have witness many horrific scenes that their anxiety can be provoked by just a firework, which
would represent the sound of a gun going off. A person can have post traumatic traumatic stress
disorder if their behavior switches and becomes more aggressive. They can become hostile
towards others and socially isolate themselves, or they can be destructive. It is also common for
people with PTSD to loss interest in actives and trust in people. An example of PSTD is there is
a case study for a woman named Marian M, whose mother s parents are survivors of the
holocaust and relocated to the United States after losing family members in the concentration
camps. Her father s parents grew up during genocide, and Marians parents grew up during the
great depression (Ford 3). Marian s parents and grandparent were raised during tragic events that
took place around the world. Marian attended the 1972 Munich Olympics when a terrorist attack
took place. Although she was not physically hurt her mental health was damaged. During the
nights she would have nightmares of terrorist attacks or car accidents (Ford 4 5). This example
show how being the in a traumatic event can change a persons life. In the moment of these events

A Research Article Written By Richard Hartshorne And...
Summary
In a research article written by Richard Hartshorne and Jennifer Baucom (2007), entitled, Issues
Affecting Cross Cultural Adaptation of International Graduate Students Richard, published at the
Multicultural Learning and Teaching Journal, the issues or challenges that international graduate
students related to cross cultural adaption were investigated. The main idea of the study was that
international students need to cope and adjust themselves to a new culture in order to make their
learning experiences more meaningful, and in order to achieve this some barriers must be
overcome. The main purpose of the study, therefore, was to identify the diverse barriers
encountered by international students and then propose ways of overcoming these barriers
efficiently. In a much broader sense, the objectives of the study are two fold: to identify and
understand the barriers for inter cultural adaptation and then provide recommendations on how to
lessen or overcome such barriers with the different stakeholders in mind. The revealed that such
barriers are a result in differences in the international students home culture and the new or host
culture, the differences in learning environments, and personal uniqueness or the self. Nevertheless,
there are also similarities among these four factors. The authors noted that the similarities can be
improved and the barriers can be minimized if some initiatives are to be taken. The authors were
able to give five initiatives: provide

Compare And Contrast Byrd And Mary Rowlandson
Colonial Essay Rough Draft This essay will consist of the many differences, but also the very
few similarities, of Mary Rowlandson and William Byrd. Using their narratives, A Narrative of
the Captivity, by Mary Rowlandson and The History of the Dividing Line, by William Byrd, to
describe how they are different and the same. And even though they of the same ethnicity and
culture, their views on the Native Americans were very different and very interesting considering
their positions. In the narrative by Rowlandson, called A Narrative of the Captivity, she tells the
reader about her experience as a captive of the Native Americans. Throughout the narrative
Rowlandson is in a seemingly constant state of worry because, one, she has no way of... Show more

Her daughter, Sarah, even died from the condition that Rowlandson herself is in. After her
daughter dies and the Natives find out, they bury her and this is when Rowlandson began to
respect and understand them. On Brady 2 multiple occasions throughout the narrative
Rowlandson uses the Native s language as a sign of understanding and respect. Rowlandson also
uses biblical quotes a couple of times as a way to reassure herself that it was God doing this for
a reason. In one excerpt she uses she is talking about her children, asking Joseph why this is
happening to her and her offspring. Unlike Rowlandson s narrative, Byrd uses satire and basically
mocks everything in his narrative, The History of the Dividing Line. Though Byrd s narrative was
mainly of him complaining it did include some useful information such as the fact that the
Colonists had the Native Americans work for them and in result of that the Colonists ended up with
fluxes. Well Byrd is also self absorbed, thinking himself to be of higher intelligence than everyone
else.

A Comparison Of The Nike Of Samothrace
The Nike of Samothrace is a freestanding statue of a winged, female body dating back to 190
BCE. The entire sculpture stands approximately 18 feet tall on a pedestal that is shaped very
similarly to the front section of a ship. Her body measures around 9 feet while the smaller base
she is connected to measures around 1 foot in height. The larger, disconnected, piece that mimics
front section of a ship is around 6 feet tall. Made of a very highly prized material in ancient Greece,
the Nikeof Samothraceis made solely from Parian marble, which is white in color. The statue has
no arms and no head and looks as if she is preparing to land on the pedestal below her as it is
moving forward. She wears a long gown that reaches all the way to her feet with her wings
stretched out in the back. This sculptor gave great attention to the entire piece and to the
gracefulness of her movements and beauty of her body. Through intricate work and important
textures, The Nike of Samothrace displays great power to Greece.
This statue is in decent condition given its age but does still have a sufficient amount of damage.
We can clearly see that both the right and left arms have been broken off of the body as well as
the head. This gives the location of where the arms and head should be a much rougher texture, but
that texture was not intentional when the piece was created. The larger base that she is standing on
is in much worse condition. It has many cracks and breaks where it has had to be

Everyone Needs Dietary Supplements Essay
Everyone Needs Health Supplements
Some people may say, why bother with health supplements? Some people today would like to

problem lies. The question I propose is, What is a proper diet, and how do you go about getting
it into your system? Some would say, Well by eating healthy food. There s another problem.
What is healthy food and where do you find it? You won t find it at your local grocery store as
you will soon find out. Others might say, We have a garden where we grow our food. That s a

I know this not just from reading about this issue, or listening about people talk about this issue
but from my own experience. I know what it is like to feel emotionally and physically tired,
although I was eating what some consider a well balanced diet. I was eating all the right foods.
However, I found out that I was not able to get all of the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that an
individual needs to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Why is that? I would have to consume large
amounts of food to meet the nutritional requirements of my body. Why do I say this? Let me tell
you why.
First of all, there is the issue of the nutritional value in the food we eat, or should I say the lack of
nutritional value in the food we eat. There is much evidence available today that clearly states that
the food sources we have are highly deficient in nutritional value.
For a long time the scientific community made light of health supplements. This is no longer true.
The American Medical Association and also the Federal Drug Administration are now singing a
different tune. In fact they are praising the value of health supplements. There is now a new field of
nutritional science specifically for the study of vitamin and mineral supplements.
As I said earlier, one of the most common reasons given for not needing food supplements is, I eat
well balanced meals, I don t need

Social Stress And Its Impact On The Classroom
Overview of Changes in this Resubmission I was delighted to receive encouragement to
resubmit this proposal and am extremely grateful to the five reviewers for their insightful
comments. I was gratified to read Reviewer 5 s comment that the proposed activities are creative,
original and potentially transformative, and Reviewer 1 s comments that this research may lead
to theoretical advances in the understanding of stigma more broadly and that I am an expert in
this field and well suited to carry out the proposed research. Although space limitations preclude
me from detailing how I addressed every individual comment, here I will summarize the major
changes to guide the Panel s review. I have kept the longitudinal study, which the entire Panel
supported. In response to the Panel s concerns about the experimental and speed dating studies, I
have dropped Studies 1 3 and replaced them with an experimental study that I have now
successfully piloted with 50 participants. This new study addresses Panel concerns about the
conceptualization of weight stigma and concerns that the manipulated construct might have been
general social stress or rejection rather than weight stigma specifically. I have added a follow up
point in the experience sampling study to assess weight so as to test the entire model. I have taken
to heart the criticism that perceived overweight status is an imperfect selection variable; all studies
now use samples with BMI 25 ( overweight ) and above. Carefully

Would you stay at a hotel you didn t know that much about? Many people did in 1893 during the

thinking it was a regular hotel until they stayed over for one night. Barely anyone made it out
because of Henry Howard Holmes the sick and notorious murder. Holmes did not have a pleasant

Holmes was put through several trials until he finally admitted to the crimes he committed. On
March 9,1896 Holmes was convicted to be killed after confessing his crimes at the trial
(Benzkofer 3). He died on May 7, 1896 after being hanged to his death(Benzkofer 4). After
Holmes death, his Murder Castle was remodeled into a tourist attraction called Holmes Horror

It is a recognised certainty that nutrition is a fundamental requirement to sustain a healthy lifestyle
and is also extremely valuable when recovering from an illness or an injury. Nutrients are
absorbed in the body and this physiological process is essential for homeostasis and ensuring
equilibrium is sustained within the body as without enough food and drink the body will not

In pregnancy the body needs to produce cells to help with the development and nourishment of
the growing fetus; it also helps to make red blood cells . During pregnancy, risks can be
associated with toxaemia, premature birth and haemorrhaging if there is no folic acid in the diet
(Youngson, 2005). Folic acid contributes to several major biological processes and these include
the combination of RNA, DNA and proteins. It is needed to help with the repair and replication of
DNA and the maintenance of the genome and it is also involved in the regulation of gene
expression (Hendler Rorvik, 2008).
Folate is a natural occurrence in foods such as beans and pulses (e.g. lentils and chickpeas),
leafy green vegetables, broccoli, spinach, tuna and oranges (Tiran, 2000). Some foods are also
fortified with folic acid such as cereals and bread. Late in the 1990 s United State scientists came
to the realisation that despite the availability of folic acid in supplements as well as foods
available in the supermarkets, people were still finding it a challenge to meet their daily folate
requirement; with this in mind the United States of America implemented the folate fortification
program (Latimes.com). For women of childbearing age, folic acid consumption needed to be
increased so in January of 1998 the United States food and drug administration authorised a folic
acid fortification of all products containing grain. The

for $8,400. On 12/31/X2, an adjusting journal entry is needed to record the amount of revenue
that has been earned. The entry also results in the correct balance of the liability account as of 12

Essay on Education Beyond Undergraduate
Education Beyond Undergraduate
Graduate or professional education is an often debated topic for a large number of University
seniors. Regardless of the undergraduate degree many students must decide whether to enter the
job market or go to school for another couple of years. When these students are faced with this
decision it is important to look at what they consider. Is it job satisfaction, future pay, or the mere
fact that they want to spend a few more years in college? These issues are all very important to
students in very different manners. An important reason students consider continuing their
education beyond their undergraduate degree is job satisfaction. Through my marketing classes, I

There are a number of exceptions. The students who make excellent grades are often offered
scholarships in graduate school. But, most of these students did not have to pay for their
undergraduate education for the same reason they will not have to pay for their graduate
education. There are those students who pay their way through college making average grades
and decide that they want to attend graduate school. They apply for scholarships, but usually do
not receive them. Then they are forced to work their way through graduate school and pay the
government back when they begin their profession. Maybe the government should make an
exception or discount for students who start and finish a graduate education. As a student who
has been free from working through college thanks to the generosity of my parents, I feel that
graduate school is the place for me. For the first time, I will have to work to pay for school and
therefore, I feel that I will appreciate it more. The third thing that I believe all college students
consider when trying to decide whether to pursue an education beyond their undergraduate
degree is whether or not they are ready to leave college. If a student has had an enjoyable college
experience and made a lot of friends, I don t think they would be interested in entering the work
force if they have the opportunity to remain in college for a couple more years. Granted, the

The film 1984, based off of George Orwell s novel, revolves around a man named Winston living in
a dystopian society called IngSoc (English Socialism). He spends his time changing history in
accordance with what the totalitarian government demands. However, Winston is guilty of what is
called thoughtcrime : the disagreement with or lack of belief in the oligarchy and war. He also
keeps a secret journal of his thoughts, an extremely dangerous decision.
Winston travels to proletarian areas to involve himself in activities such as soliciting a prostitute,
buying razors and eventually purchasing a secret room. He then begins to interact with another
member of his society, a woman named Julia. They partake in other criminal activities such as
sex, and eating real foods like sugar and coffee. They decide to live an alternate life in the room he

Essay On Creation Myths
Creation Myths My mythology class has been reading and learning about most of the creation
myths. A creation myth is how the earth began and how humans first came to inhabit it. Also, we
have reviewed the motifs of the myths. A motif is like a pattern of the similar situations happening
throughout the myths. The three motifs I thought that were the most common were that most had a
single creator, people were created from organic material, and the battles that went on between most
of the gods.
Most myths had a single creator In my opinion I think that if there were more than two creators then
that would be too much power. A creator is the one that puts the earthtogether and forms the first
humans on earth. Quite a few creation myth stories had only one god that created everything. For
example, the Babylonian had one creator which was Marduk, the Hindu had one creator which was
Prajapati, the Inuit had a single creator which was Raven, the Chinese said there was only one and
his name was Pan ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of the battles were bigger than others but I thought that the battles were important to use as
a motif. In the Hindu creation there was a disagreement of the choices Prajapati was making with
his daughter. The other gods got very angry with Prajapati. For revenge the gods created a monster
named Rudra, and it haunted Prajapati. Once the monstrous creature found him, he shot him with
an arrow and killed him. In the Norse creation Odin was the god that created the humans, but the
gods did not accept how he was making them. Ymir s sisters especially did not agree with Odin s
idea so they planned to get revenge on Odin. The sisters gathered at the foot of the Yggdrasil and
carved lines into it, the lines represented human lives and the twist and turns that humans go
through. Humans would never be as powerful, not even Odin could fix the

The Secret Anne Frank Research Paper
On her thirteenth birthday, Anne Frank s parents gave her a diary. She cherished it with all her
heart and treated it with much care. Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl Who would ever

isolation, during World War II; Anne s family hid in The Secret Annex, a hidden living space in
the back of an office building. Anne was constantly in danger of being caught and killed by the
Nazis. During her time in the Annex Anne developed a deep personality, which knew she was

needed someone to talk to, she had Kitty, but that lead to many one sided conversations. Anne was
still young when she went into hiding, she had to grow up, and she went through puberty and went
through the normal teenage problems. In the Secret Annex everyone lived their normal lives, it was
as if there was no war outside, although they obviously noticed and wished it was over, Anne knew
this, but she wanted to be more, so she was immortalized through history, with her writing. Anne
Frank tried to explain her identity to Kitty in small parts; she describes her difficulties as a daughter
and sister, her life as a student, friend, and a writer. Anne has three family members, her father,
mother, and sister, but her family grows when she moves into the Secret Annex, Anne s family then

Orange Coast College Student Dance Concert
The Dance concert is the Orange Coast College Student Dance Concert having multiple dances
of different types of dances. It s inside the Robert B. Moore Global Theater. It s starts at 8:00 and
ends at 10:00pm and I went on April 28th, a Friday night. The artistic directors are Amelie Hunter
and Shana Menaker and I believe to be one hundred people or more in the theater. So it s a full
house fill with students and adults alike.
What I enjoy during the concert was the dancers performing without being distracted or scare by the
audience. Granted it s to be expected and the dancers are not strangers to this, but nice to see
performers not buckle down to the pressure of fear because of the audience. At the same time, I
understand that they do, but what I have seen they didn t show it. What I don t like was not the
quality the dances, but the different types of dances shown. Most dancers I saw only modern or
contemporary pieces and the only thing different was the hip hop pieces. I didn t seem to find
classical ballet, tap, jazz or anything to diversify the concert. While I didn t find the concert a
chore to watch and was engaging, but I find myself looking at the hip hop dances more than I
would for modern or contemporary mostly due to something different to watch. ... Show more

One that stands out to me were the dances with props mostly it makes the dances more interesting
to look at and what they can do with it to their dances. Along with the chair prop, there were a
dancer using two tables, one where a mop was used. How it impacted was how they used it along
with choreography. The dance schism is like a nurse helping a patient at a psych ward to me. In
conclusion, I would like to see this again at another time for to see if the dances have something

Who Is The Protagonist In A Midsummer Night s Dream
A Midsummer Night s Dream: Character Analysis of Nick Bottom Nick Bottom, or Bottom as
he is commonly referred to, is portrayed as the joke of A Midsummer Night s Dream by William
Shakespeare and is easily manipulated by the other characters due to his arrogance and his
foolishness. Several times throughout the play. Bottom s arrogance is highlighted so that the
audience can mock him. An example of Bottom s arrogance is when, Bottom believes that he is a
talented actor and director, even better than the others performing and directing the play. He tells
the director of the play, Quince, to let him play more characters in the play and says that the play

i. 35 36). He uses the word exposition, which is a comprehensive description, when he means to
use the phrase disposed to . Bottom s arrogance and conceit is what gets him involved in Puck
and Oberon s plans because of how foolish it makes him. It makes Bottom look like an ass , so
Puck decides to turn him into a literal ass . His need for attention and his foolishness also lets
him be accepting and go along with Titania and the faeries. Despite his arrogance and
foolishness, Bottom is quite friendly and is well received by the mechanicals. When Bottom is
missing, the mechanicals worry that the play will no longer be good if he is not there and begin
complimenting his appearance and saying that he is the best wit of any handicraft man in Athens
(IV. ii. 7) Bottom s openness to the faeries shows how friendly and outgoing he is as well. But it
is this openness that also makes him easily manipulated. He easily accepts Titania and the faeries
care, which is actually him falling into Oberon s plan to humiliate Titania. As a result of Bottom s
arrogance, foolishness and friendliness, Bottom is an easy target for Shakespeare to turn into the
joke of A Midsummer Night s Dream through both his own

A Marxist Approach On Social Classes
stratification is brought forth by Domhoff and it supports the idea that social classes themselves
have hierarchical layers determined status, power, and prestige. The critiques would most likely
support the idea of pluralism and that each group is represented in political institutions, but that s
just not the case in practical manners. A Marxist approach would argue that power is never not
socially organized. The reason why power matters is that power by Marxist definition, is the
ability to force someone to complete any action that goes against their best wishes and/or free will.
Marx would also argue that the state is not neutral, like the pluralists believe, but rather the state
represents the elite s class interest. Marx would also argue that the elitist seek to preserve
themselves within the governmental structure. Basically, Marx doesn t support that the government
is neutral and that pluralist are correct. His theories align with the Power Elite Theory by Wright
Mills, but Marx would follow up solutions to wealth inequality with a change in the state s
systematic role or roles in society.

Reggae Music Research Paper
The History of a Legacy
What is reggae music? Reggae music is a type of music that consists of different genres of music
such as blues and calypso. Reggae music also consists of different rhythms such as different
accents on different beats of the music. Say for instance you are playing in a four/four time
measure. The natural beat for a drummer playing in this type of particular time measure would be
for him to hit his high hat on all 4 beats, his bass foot pedal on one and three, and his snare on two
and four. When playing reggae this particular pattern differs for the drummer. When playing reggae
the drummer has more room to play around with the beat. In this particular setting the drummer
would continue to hit the hi hat on all four beats of the four measure. He would then start the
measure of music by hitting his bass foot ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Reggae music consists of a drum set, bongos, bass guitar, electric guitar, and so much more. A
basic drum set for reggae music consists of a snare drum, a hi hat, a floor tom, a middle tom,
and a high tom, a kick bass, a ride cymbal and a crash symbol. All of these pieces if equipment
are used to keep the rhythm throughout the performance of music. Bongos are a lot like the
toms of a drum set, but differ as far as the material that is used to create the distinct sound of
these two instruments. Toms of a drum set consist of man made material, whereas bongos
consist of drumheads that are made from an animals skin. Bongos also are an advocate to the
rhythmic part of reggae music. The bass guitar is the heartbeat of reggae music. The bass guitar
is a four string or more instrument that is played by hand by plcking it or consciously striking it.
An electric guitar is the exact same thing as a bass guitar, with the exception of the pitch. A bass
guitar has a deep bellowing kind of a pitch, whereas an electric guitar has more of a high pitch to

Tesco s Strategy At The New Retail Market
STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT Tesco s strategy to compete in the new retail market
INTRODUCTION Tesco, UK s largest supermarket is facing a stiff competition from discounters
(Aldi) and to a certain extent from the high end supermarkets (M S) since the past few years.
Tesco s share value fell from 321p in December 2013 to 168.15p in December 2014. (Yahoo,
2015) To add to this depreciating market value and low profits, Tesco has been in the headlines for
a myriad of scams. Such a situation calls for a strategy overhaul. The shortcomings in Tesco s
strategy to deal with the competition and the overall situation of the retail market has been analysed

CAMBRIDGE, 2015) THE CURRENT SITUATION In 2014, Tesco witnessed its worst
financial year in decades with sales plummeting and its market share being lost to the
discounters and upmarket supermarkets. The management team was overhauled and a new
CEO, Dave Lewis, was appointed. Lewis shut 43 unprofitable stores and scrapped the
development of 49 others. (Quinn, 2015) He also brought about various job cuts and sold some
of Tesco s subsidiaries such as the broadband. In his attempt to reduce costs by over a quarter of a
million pounds per annum, he decided to close the Chestnut Headquarters and merge it with the
Welwyn Garden City office, consequently reducing the management overheads (Shapland, 2015)
These and other associated measures are very drastic cost cutting measures, but they alone cannot
revive Tesco. It needs more than just reducing waste and overheads. In the words of Alastair

business to be cheaper than you. (Dryburgh, 2014) Tesco needs to cope and not compete, and this
issue is highlighted in various contexts in the report. TESCO S RESOURCES AND

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn Research Paper
The life of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn is marked by his remarkable refusal to abandon that which
he loved and believed in, even under the iron grip of oppression. Born in 1918, the Russian spent
the majority of his early life in the city of Rostov on Don where he lived with his widowed
mother. As a young man, Aleksandr developed a passion for writing, and began looking for
places to print his works when he was only a teenager. This proved to be more than just a
vaporous fantasy of his adolescence; Solzhenitsyn s strong desire to write motivated and inspired
him throughout his entire life. In 1941, Solzhenitsyn was drafted to fight in World War II, where
he was utilized for his mathematical aptitude in the artillery department. He amazingly survived
three years of working and fighting on the front lines; yet in the year of 1945, Solzhenitsyn wrote
a series of letters that would change the course of his entire life. These letters were addressed to
one of his old friends from the local university that they both attended in Rostov. In these writings,
the 27 year old soldier used code names to express his discontent with Joseph Stalin s management
of the war. The Russian authorities eventually discovered these conversations, and arrested
Solzhenitsyn for his disrespectful comments. In July of 1945, Aleksandr... Show more content on

depression when speaking of the amount of symptoms and severity of symptoms. Some believe
that one must feel suicidal or have a history of hospitalizations in order to be considered to have

nevertheless most often they are gradual. It also deals with cycles of elation or mania which
often affects thinking, judgment, and social behavior. Bipolar disorder almost always involves
abnormal moods at both ends of the emotional spectrum. Those with bipolar depression can have

Characterisation Of The Father And Son In Cormac...
4. Discuss how one novel you have studied constructs complex characters to represent complex
ideas.
The use of characterisation in a text can be used to represent complex ideas. Cormac McCarthy s
2006 novel, The Road, follows the journey of a man and son that face several events that challenge
their humanity in order to survive the post apocalyptic America. By studying the characterisation of
the father and son in The Road, it is revealed that complex ideas are represented. Readers may find
that the existentialist ideas of death and violence being unavoidable, love able to be shown through
actions, every decision having both rewards and repercussions and when humans are put in extreme
or difficult situations, core values and beliefs may be abandoned, are promoted through the actions
and thoughts of the characters. These ideas are developed especially through the four main events
in the novel through the use of dark imagery and descriptive language.
Death and violence are unavoidable and we must find purpose in life with the acceptance of this
fact. Throughout the novel, the father and son are forced to react to several events where this idea
is evident and promoted. Although the father is characterised as logical and morally conflicted, he
prioritises the boy s safety. This is revealed through some of the main events that occur in the novel,
such as when the duo encounter a man struck by lightning and on the verge of death. Despite his
son s pleas to help the man, the

One easily identified feature in the Sikh temple was the way alter was set up with special lights

The Hindu temples have pretty much the same style for the temple alter but the only difference
is instead of Sikh holy book we have statues of Gods instead. The second identifiable feature was
the Kara Parshad given at the end of the service. This is very important part to visitors visiting

Why do they do Chaur on the holy book? Why do they put the holy book on a bed? I was really
confused why someone would stand behind the holy book for an hour doing the chaur (fan), to

is done to express their regards and respect for the Holy Scripture, the one True King. The king
commanded the greatest power, there for was given the maximum respect and honor in the olden
days. Guru Nanak (the first guru) said that the true kings are those who love God and help others to
do that as well. They are the rulers of people s heart. These political kings are temporary kings
and their authority ends when they meet their death. But the Gurus are the true kings and they
teach Truth and rule our hearts. The Guru Granth Sahib (the holy book) is the embodiment of
the spirit of all the Sikh Gurus and many other holy men whose hymns are included in it. The
holy book is concerted as the last Guru. We respect them as the true kings. The king sat on
throne under a canopy and he used to have a fan like structure to be waved over his head as a

Transitional Justice Interventions
Roy Gutman from the Newsday magazine brought this issues to light so the world could see how
these individuals were being treated. On April 30, 1992 in Bosnia Serb forces decided to
participate in ethnic cleansing by forcing many non Serb people into this camp. They were living in
brutal conditions, the Omarska camp along Keraterm and Trnopolje were created and looked like a
concentration camp. Transitional justice intervention deals with historical human rights violations
such as the violations that took place at the Omarska camp. The groups involved in ethnic cleansing
were the Muslims and Croats. By using transitional justice interventions this can heal wounds of
those who have been affected by human rights violations, these human rights violations have

Pros And Cons Of Birth Control
traception
Contraception is used to prevent pregnancy. The use of condoms can prevent pregnancy and protect
against STDs. Other protective barriers, such as dental dams, are recommended for oral sex and
analingus. Some sexually transmitted infections, such as genital warts and genital herpes can be
spread through skin to skin contact, not just penetrative sex. For those in committed relationships
who seek only to prevent pregnancy, there are many forms of birth control, and a healthcare
provider can discuss options and detail what is the ideal form of birth control. There is no single
universal method that works for everyone.
According to Michael McGee, MEd, a certified sexual health educator and adjunct professor at
Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey, sexual health is intimately related to
reproduction. Birth control choices to prevent pregnancy and the steps couples need to take to have
a healthy pregnancy are all aspects of sexual health.
Some factors a qualified physician will take into consideration when discussing options are:
Patient s sexual activity
Previously used birth control methods
Existing medical conditions
Lifestyle and likelihood of taking a daily pill on schedule
Use of tobacco products
Existence of menstrual migraines
Menstrual flow
Personal and family history of blood clots
Existence or history of breast cancer

Overcoming Adversity In Chaim Potok s The Chosen
Horace once stated that adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous
circumstances would have lain dormant. His assertion highlights how adversity can help one s
character development and it can bring out one s hidden talents. Those who go through life without
having any adversities will not understand the problems of those around them and the world.
Because of this, it is important to go through hardships in order to understand, manage, and solve
them. When one faces adversities, one s true character and strength is uncovered. One will
eventually face adversities: financial/political hardships, misfortunes, or disasters. They are
inevitable and when they occur, one has to figure out solutions and ways to overcome... Show more

Many talented people come from comfortable situations. Sometimes struggle can expose
weaknesses in character and can bring out deep character flaws that would have been hidden.
For instance, many who have had traumatizing childhoods often turn out for the worse in the
future. These people turn to illegal drugs, abuse, or begin to develop mental illnesses. However,
although this is true, a majority of these people eventually get their lives back on track. Beloved
actor, Robert Downey Jr., was once a drug addict. At the age of six his dad allowed him to try
marijuana, which created an emotional bond between the two. This led to Downey Jr.
becoming a daily drinker. As a rising star, Downey Jr. was arrested many times for drug offences
and was in and out of jail. As a result, his career could no longer progress forward because many
filmmakers would not hire the addict. The turning point of his drug reliant life was when Susan
Downey, his wife, threatened him with an ultimatum. In addition to threats of ending the
marriage, Downey Jr. joined a 12 step program, yoga, meditation, and therapy to keep him sober.
Now, he is one of the most loved superheroes, Iron Man, and his fight for a better life has inspired
many. Downey Jr. s journey not only presents the idea of how adversity can change one s life
(positively), but also that those who have been in the ditch must fight their way back up. To be

How To Read Like A Writer By Mike Bunn
When studying through a textbook, reading an online blog, or watching a YouTube video, most
people simply absorb the raw information that is provided after all, that is what those sources are
generally used for. However, behind all that information lies deeper knowledge of a vast ocean of
context. This context sets the criteria for effectiveness, a topic discussed in the essay How to Read
Like a Writer by Mike Bunn. Bunn states that every text or video publisher has an intended audience
that it aims to please, and they achieve those goals through a specific choice of conversation,
selected diction, and an understanding of the consequences that could happen after the audience
reads or watches their content. The correct choices increases the effectiveness of hooking the
attention of their audience. There were several articles that displayed efforts of effectiveness for
their target audience, but this essay will discuss one YouTubevideo that stood out amongst the rest.
In the YouTube video How Wolves Change Rivers published by Sustainable Human, the narrator
argues that the introductions of wolves to Yellowstone National Park not only altered the ecology
of animals, but that they also brought upon massive improvements to the luscious environment as
well. The author brings upon the conversation by discussing a term used in the food chain called
the trophic cascade , a term that describes how the introduction of an organism at that top of the
food chain can

Is Bataille s Philosophy Something We Could Realistically...
Is Bataille s philosophy something we could realistically live by? Critically discuss with reference
to the concepts of unproductive expenditure and transgression.
Bataille argues that in modern capitalist society, we are measured by our utility and production
within this system. Material utility is restricted to production and to conserving goods whilst
limited to reproduction and to the preservation of human life. As a result, we work within this
framework where values, rules and laws have been created for us to work within, which, Bataille
argues, restricts our liberty. Though utility is an apparent positive principle of capitalism, Bataille
sees this as a principle of powerlessness and an incapability of being able to expend (Botting and
Wilson, 1997, 192). He uses the example of a boy who wants to waste and destroy but cannot do
this because he cannot justify it in utilitarian terms and is unaware that others also have this
interest. The father of the boy is partly responsible for repressing the boy s desire to waste and
destroy through things he provides for him: a home, clothes food and partial recreation. This does
not actually satisfy what the son s desires are as there is something fundamental within the
character of the son. Bataille is trying to demonstrate how in society, the father is like production,
which provides us with the basic components of living but not what we really need and how this
excess desire the boy has, needs to be satisfied. Rules and

Goodfellas Movie Essay
Goodfellas is one of the most significant crime movies. As such, this picture addresses the
motives and rationale behind wrongful activities perpetrated by gangsters in a convincing manner.
It also examines practical implications of their moral choices. The movie traces the life of an
aspiring gangster, Henry. At the beginning, he is an ambitious adolescent willing to work for the
local mafia. He succeeds, gradually rises through the ranks, and wins respect from the boss, Paul
Cicero. This protagonist also makes friends with his colleagues James (Henry s personal role

going over the top on a regular basis, enhances the risks of their activities and causes constant
paranoia. Third, their ostentatious machismo presents some problems regarding Henry s health

Although having the best set up to be the main villain of the three, Harry s part in the film is
pushed around. For example he gets amnesia in order for other characters to be focused on. The
amnesia completely changes Harry to become a happy person. This undermines the director s
purpose of having Harry as a villain. Villains are not meant to be joyous and dancing. Raimi s

point that this film is all over the place with flaws. What did his character gain from amnesia?

Some may think that what was observable in facts is that Uber was seen twice within a thirty
minute time frame. The arresting officer conceded that appellant was not seen circling the same
block, was not observed stopping or slowing down in the vicinity of any known prostitutes, did not
attempt to engage anyone in conversation, and, as stated above, testified that no erratic driving

The Irony Of Differing Perspectives
The Irony of Differing Perspectives
Till 1827, the idea of sobriety was practically non existent in North America . Taverns were open
at all times of day and were a place of encounter for everyone regardless of class, race and gender.
Moreover, they facilitated political negotiations, economic exchanges and interracial sociability .
So, where did the idea of reducing alcohol consumption come from amid the booming socio
economic stability that taverns seemed to provide?
Except for Peter DeLottinville who recounts the honest events that occurred in Joe Beef s Canteen,
the other authors claim that the temperance movement was used for ulterior motives than it
appeared to be on the surface. For instance, in Glenn J. Lockwood s Temperance in ... Show more

During the period of time that the temperance movement was gaining momentum, the Catholic
church hopped on board to speed up the process and gain as many converts as they could using their
up until then secret weapon: Chiniquy. However, the hidden intention/objective was to regain the
Catholic church s popularity and confidence after Catholics were becoming outnumbered by the
influx of Irish famine immigrants and wanted to become more industrious and progressive (cite).
Unlike all of the previously mentioned authors, DeLottinville does not imply that Joe Beef tried
his best to alleviate problems of housing, job hunting, healthcare and labor unrest with any kind of
hidden agenda. Beef genuinely cared for the welfare of the working class of Montreal and took it
upon himself to represent/assume the voice of the casual laborers . In this case, the Middle Class
was the one benefiting from the temperance movement as they were afraid Beef would succeed
and have laborers demands adhered to. In the same way that Beef s canteen was a place where
every grade in the social scale was represented (CHANGE), many other taverns were also used for
both political and economic interracial exchanges and relationships.
In other words, whereas taverns were used as tools to strengthen a sense of belonging and security,
and often attempted to prove the worthiness of the lower classes, temperance was

20th Century Gangs Research Paper
Since the 1800 s gangs as we all know have a history in the United States. The United States
became a melting pot during this time as people of many ethnicities and religions entered the
United States. Many of the new immigrants joined gangs in order to gain a group identity, protect
themselves against other rival groups both immigrant based and natural born citizens, and build a
unified presence. The five corners in new York cityis a prime example of immigrant based gangs
just trying to protect themselves and gain identity in the new world. Even though the street gangs
of the 19th century were widely feared by other citizens and rival gangs, they don t hold a candle
to the threat that the gangs we have today to the safety of society.

In our Milky Way galaxy, there are over a hundred billion stars, and within the universe there are

techniques to make their jobs easier. One important technique in, not only astronomy but science
itself, is trying to classify something into groups to find a certain pattern. Since there are so many
stars in a single galaxy, astronomers must find methods for organization. Stars are not all the same,
they vary in size, temperature, and brightness. To keep track of all these different characteristics,
astronomers had to come up with a diagram. The Hertzsprung Russell diagram is one of the most

The Debate Of Knowledge And Belief
The topic of knowledge and belief has been a subject of investigation and a primary field in
philosophical research for centuries. Whether it was Aristotle or Descartes, multiple ideas on
knowledge and belief arise, such as the epistemological theories of foundationalism or
coherentism, which provide philosophical explanations to this debate. For the sake of this essay,
and in my own opinion, knowledge should be distinguished from belief. Everyone is subject to
different types of beliefs based on upbringing, however knowledge of basic items is universal,
therefore it immediately becomes apparent that there is a clear distinction between the two
concepts. Aristotle proposes an argument called the Regress argument, (Wrenn) this argument is
essentially the debate of knowledge versus belief using the epistemological theories of
knowledge. Aristotle takes the side of foundationalism based on the simple fact that it defends
knowledge and it that knowledge requires basic justified beliefs. In the argument it states that
coherentism is simply beliefs supported by other beliefs therefore leading to no concrete
knowledge behind the beliefs. For example, if I say that next month is the April, it is justified by
two other beliefs, that this month is March and the month after April is May (Delaney, 1976). This
example displays that for justification of coherentism it is simply derived from further beliefs.
However, for foundationalism, all beliefs are justified, which we can

In 1764, during the Industrial Revolution, the textiles industry changed forever when the first
spinning machine was invented. The Royal Society of Arts offered a prize for an invention that
could spin six threads at once but would only need one person to attend to it. One of the inventors
that took to the challenge was James Hargreaves, 1720 to 1778, who produced the Spinning Jenny,
a machine that mechanically reproduced the actions of the hand spinner. The Spinning Jenny was

invention best spun the short fibres of regular length, such as cotton. The cotton yarn produced was

  • 2. Rhetorical Analysis Of John M Barry John M. Barry uses the various different types of rhetorical strategies to characterize scientific research by comparing the opposites of both certainty and uncertainty, by referring to life in the woods as a metaphor towards the mind and creation of science, and a series of rhetorical questions that shows the process and mind of the scientists portrayed in John M Barry s essay. John M. Barry describes certainty as a way to create strength and gives one something upon which to lean . Uncertainty is something described as a way to create weakness and makes one tentative if not fearful...may not overcome significant obstacles. This opens up the essay to the audience so that they can have the ability to agree or disagree with the statements made in the first paragraph. He further on describes that being a scientist means to have the courage to accept indeed, embrace uncertainty. That s why these statements were included in the first paragraph: to show that one major characteristic of scientist and scientific research is to be able to accept uncertainty/ the unknown.... This one line puts into a few words what Barry s view are on scientific research and their role today. This makes the audience aware of the work that is put in and the hardworking views as Barry describes the scientific research in a positive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Effect Of Nitrogen On The Growth Of A Sapling Essay Introduction Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plant growth, being a key component in the process of photosynthesis and is a part of the chlorophyll molecule. Nitrogen acts to increase the amount of the green chlorophyll in plant leaves which allows them to absorb the optimum amount of sunlight by increasing the surface area of leaves to hold the chlorophyll and optimum amounts of nitrogen in a plant allow it to produce enough foliage in order for it to successfully photosynthesise efficiently, therefore producing the right energy it needs to function. I am interested to see how the levels of nitrogen in the young saplings, measured from the leaves of randomly chosen plants, affects the rate at which they grow around the radius of their trunks and whether there is a significant relationship between the two. I would expect that certain levels of nitrogen are the most optimal for the growth of a sapling where enough is present to allow the most efficient production of photosynthesis in its leaves as the energy produced in this process would allow growth throughout the rest of the plant. At very low levels I could expect growth rates of saplings to be very slow or not at all and as the nitrogen levels in a sapling s leaves increases for the growth rate to increase to a certain extent. There would however be likely a point where an increase in nitrogen levels does not mean a higher growth rate as too much can be detrimental to other components in a sapling s health, ... Many people think cheerleading is not a sport, cheerleading is a sport, it has everything that defines it as one, they only have 2 ВЅ minutes to show everyone what they have been working on for months. It s rigorous just to make all those 8 counts perfect. Although, many say cheerleading isn t a sport it is here s why. Because of significant constitutional issues, the Commission continues to recommend enhanced selfregulation to address concerns about alcohol advertising s appeal to minors. In addition to self regulation of advertising, a comprehensive alcohol policy also must address the means by which teens obtain alcohol for consumption. Younger minors obtain alcohol primarily from noncommercial sources; this social availability can be addressed by changing adult attitudes about teen use. Changes also are needed to reduce underage alcohol purchases from commercial outlets, a source of alcohol for older minors. Support is needed for the efforts of organizations that can conduct rigorous field studies of the efficacy of alternative approaches to improving enforcement of minimum age purchase laws. The Commission will continue to monitor alcohol industry self regulation, particularly the implementation of the new placement standard requiring that adults constitute at least 70% of the audience for advertising. Additionally, the Commission will monitor the effectiveness of thirdparty review programs and will continue to evaluate new advertising programs that may have undue appeal to underage consumers. Surprisingly it is also natural for some people to experience fear, nervousness, and anxiousness out of nowhere. People may think it is abnormal to have a rush of emotions out of the blue, but this is something a lot of people in society have to deal with on a daily basis. The combination of these emotion reflexes is what is known as anxiety. Anxiety is a mental disorder that makes a person have sudden unwanted feelings of fear, anxiousness, and worrisome. Veterans have witness many horrific scenes that their anxiety can be provoked by just a firework, which would represent the sound of a gun going off. A person can have post traumatic traumatic stress disorder if their behavior switches and becomes more aggressive. They can become hostile towards others and socially isolate themselves, or they can be destructive. It is also common for people with PTSD to loss interest in actives and trust in people. • 8. A Research Article Written By Richard Hartshorne And... Summary In a research article written by Richard Hartshorne and Jennifer Baucom (2007), entitled, Issues Affecting Cross Cultural Adaptation of International Graduate Students Richard, published at the Multicultural Learning and Teaching Journal, the issues or challenges that international graduate students related to cross cultural adaption were investigated. The main idea of the study was that international students need to cope and adjust themselves to a new culture in order to make their learning experiences more meaningful, and in order to achieve this some barriers must be overcome. The main purpose of the study, therefore, was to identify the diverse barriers encountered by international students and then propose ways of overcoming these barriers efficiently. In a much broader sense, the objectives of the study are two fold: to identify and understand the barriers for inter cultural adaptation and then provide recommendations on how to lessen or overcome such barriers with the different stakeholders in mind. The revealed that such barriers are a result in differences in the international students home culture and the new or host culture, the differences in learning environments, and personal uniqueness or the self. Nevertheless, there are also similarities among these four factors. The authors noted that the similarities can be improved and the barriers can be minimized if some initiatives are to be taken. Compare And Contrast Byrd And Mary Rowlandson Colonial Essay Rough Draft This essay will consist of the many differences, but also the very few similarities, of Mary Rowlandson and William Byrd. Using their narratives, A Narrative of the Captivity, by Mary Rowlandson and The History of the Dividing Line, by William Byrd, to describe how they are different and the same. And even though they of the same ethnicity and culture, their views on the Native Americans were very different and very interesting considering their positions. Rowlandson also uses biblical quotes a couple of times as a way to reassure herself that it was God doing this for a reason. In one excerpt she uses she is talking about her children, asking Joseph why this is happening to her and her offspring. Unlike Rowlandson s narrative, Byrd uses satire and basically mocks everything in his narrative, The History of the Dividing Line. Though Byrd s narrative was mainly of him complaining it did include some useful information such as the fact that the Colonists had the Native Americans work for them and in result of that the Colonists ended up with fluxes. • 10. A Comparison Of The Nike Of Samothrace The Nike of Samothrace is a freestanding statue of a winged, female body dating back to 190 BCE. The entire sculpture stands approximately 18 feet tall on a pedestal that is shaped very similarly to the front section of a ship. Her body measures around 9 feet while the smaller base she is connected to measures around 1 foot in height. The larger, disconnected, piece that mimics front section of a ship is around 6 feet tall. Made of a very highly prized material in ancient Greece, the Nikeof Samothraceis made solely from Parian marble, which is white in color. The statue has no arms and no head and looks as if she is preparing to land on the pedestal below her as it is moving forward. She wears a long gown that reaches all the way to her feet with her wings stretched out in the back. This sculptor gave great attention to the entire piece and to the gracefulness of her movements and beauty of her body. Through intricate work and important textures, The Nike of Samothrace displays great power to Greece. This statue is in decent condition given its age but does still have a sufficient amount of damage. We can clearly see that both the right and left arms have been broken off of the body as well as the head. This gives the location of where the arms and head should be a much rougher texture, but that texture was not intentional when the piece was created. The larger base that she is standing on is in much worse condition. It has many cracks and breaks where it has had to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Growing up with a mother in sales, and a father that is a CPA accountant it was basically inevitable that I would fall along a similar path of them both. The career path that I have ultimately chose to dedicate my time to is lying somewhere along the lines of Finance. Iowa State has given me the opportunity to observe all potential outcomes that are a part of the College of Business. Personally, coming into Iowa State I had no idea what I wanted to do. Everything was new to me once I graduated high school, I had a lot of growing up to do and so far I can honestly say that I am proud of myself with what I have accomplished so far. Some people today would like to believe that all we have to do to keep ourselves healthy is to eat a proper diet. That s where the problem lies. What is healthy food and where do you find it? You won t find it at your local grocery store as you will soon find out. Others might say, We have a garden where we grow our food. I know this not just from reading about this issue, or listening about people talk about this issue but from my own experience. I know what it is like to feel emotionally and physically tired, although I was eating what some consider a well balanced diet. I was eating all the right foods. However, I found out that I was not able to get all of the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that an individual needs to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Why is that? I would have to consume large amounts of food to meet the nutritional requirements of my body. Why do I say this? Let me tell you why. First of all, there is the issue of the nutritional value in the food we eat, or should I say the lack of nutritional value in the food we eat. There is much evidence available today that clearly states that the food sources we have are highly deficient in nutritional value. For a long time the scientific community made light of health supplements. This is no longer true. • 14. Social Stress And Its Impact On The Classroom Overview of Changes in this Resubmission I was delighted to receive encouragement to resubmit this proposal and am extremely grateful to the five reviewers for their insightful comments. I was gratified to read Reviewer 5 s comment that the proposed activities are creative, original and potentially transformative, and Reviewer 1 s comments that this research may lead to theoretical advances in the understanding of stigma more broadly and that I am an expert in this field and well suited to carry out the proposed research. Although space limitations preclude me from detailing how I addressed every individual comment, here I will summarize the major changes to guide the Panel s review. I have kept the longitudinal study, which the entire Panel supported. In response to the Panel s concerns about the experimental and speed dating studies, I have dropped Studies 1 3 and replaced them with an experimental study that I have now successfully piloted with 50 participants. This new study addresses Panel concerns about the conceptualization of weight stigma and concerns that the manipulated construct might have been general social stress or rejection rather than weight stigma specifically. I have added a follow up point in the experience sampling study to assess weight so as to test the entire model. I have taken to heart the criticism that perceived overweight status is an imperfect selection variable; all studies now use samples with BMI 25 ( overweight ) and above. Carefully ... How the provision of information in the antenatal period can positively affect health and life style choices in the pregnant woman and her family. It is a recognised certainty that nutrition is a fundamental requirement to sustain a healthy lifestyle and is also extremely valuable when recovering from an illness or an injury. Nutrients are absorbed in the body and this physiological process is essential for homeostasis and ensuring equilibrium is sustained within the body as without enough food and drink the body will not function correctly (Edwards Thomas, 2009). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In pregnancy the body needs to produce cells to help with the development and nourishment of the growing fetus; it also helps to make red blood cells . During pregnancy, risks can be associated with toxaemia, premature birth and haemorrhaging if there is no folic acid in the diet (Youngson, 2005). Folic acid contributes to several major biological processes and these include the combination of RNA, DNA and proteins. It is needed to help with the repair and replication of DNA and the maintenance of the genome and it is also involved in the regulation of gene expression (Hendler Rorvik, 2008). Folate is a natural occurrence in foods such as beans and pulses (e.g. lentils and chickpeas), leafy green vegetables, broccoli, spinach, tuna and oranges (Tiran, 2000). Some foods are also fortified with folic acid such as cereals and bread. Late in the 1990 s United State scientists came to the realisation that despite the availability of folic acid in supplements as well as foods available in the supermarkets, people were still finding it a challenge to meet their daily folate requirement; with this in mind the United States of America implemented the folate fortification program (Latimes.com). For women of childbearing age, folic acid consumption needed to be increased so in January of 1998 the United States food and drug administration authorised a folic acid fortification of all products containing grain. A creation myth is how the earth began and how humans first came to inhabit it. Also, we have reviewed the motifs of the myths. A motif is like a pattern of the similar situations happening throughout the myths. The three motifs I thought that were the most common were that most had a single creator, people were created from organic material, and the battles that went on between most of the gods. Most myths had a single creator In my opinion I think that if there were more than two creators then that would be too much power. A creator is the one that puts the earthtogether and forms the first humans on earth. Quite a few creation myth stories had only one god that created everything. A Marxist Approach On Social Classes stratification is brought forth by Domhoff and it supports the idea that social classes themselves have hierarchical layers determined status, power, and prestige. The critiques would most likely support the idea of pluralism and that each group is represented in political institutions, but that s just not the case in practical manners. A Marxist approach would argue that power is never not socially organized. The reason why power matters is that power by Marxist definition, is the ability to force someone to complete any action that goes against their best wishes and/or free will. Marx would also argue that the state is not neutral, like the pluralists believe, but rather the state represents the elite s class interest. Marx would also argue that the elitist seek to preserve themselves within the governmental structure. Basically, Marx doesn t support that the government is neutral and that pluralist are correct. • 34. Characterisation Of The Father And Son In Cormac... 4. Discuss how one novel you have studied constructs complex characters to represent complex ideas. The use of characterisation in a text can be used to represent complex ideas. Cormac McCarthy s 2006 novel, The Road, follows the journey of a man and son that face several events that challenge their humanity in order to survive the post apocalyptic America. By studying the characterisation of the father and son in The Road, it is revealed that complex ideas are represented. Readers may find that the existentialist ideas of death and violence being unavoidable, love able to be shown through actions, every decision having both rewards and repercussions and when humans are put in extreme or difficult situations, core values and beliefs may be abandoned, are promoted through the actions and thoughts of the characters. These ideas are developed especially through the four main events in the novel through the use of dark imagery and descriptive language. Death and violence are unavoidable and we must find purpose in life with the acceptance of this fact. Throughout the novel, the father and son are forced to react to several events where this idea is evident and promoted. Although the father is characterised as logical and morally conflicted, he prioritises the boy s safety. This is revealed through some of the main events that occur in the novel, such as when the duo encounter a man struck by lightning and on the verge of death. Despite his son s pleas to help the man, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Because of this, it is important to go through hardships in order to understand, manage, and solve them. When one faces adversities, one s true character and strength is uncovered. Sometimes struggle can expose weaknesses in character and can bring out deep character flaws that would have been hidden. For instance, many who have had traumatizing childhoods often turn out for the worse in the future. These people turn to illegal drugs, abuse, or begin to develop mental illnesses. However, although this is true, a majority of these people eventually get their lives back on track. Beloved actor, Robert Downey Jr., was once a drug addict. At the age of six his dad allowed him to try marijuana, which created an emotional bond between the two. This led to Downey Jr. becoming a daily drinker. As a rising star, Downey Jr. was arrested many times for drug offences and was in and out of jail. As a result, his career could no longer progress forward because many filmmakers would not hire the addict. The turning point of his drug reliant life was when Susan Downey, his wife, threatened him with an ultimatum. How To Read Like A Writer By Mike Bunn When studying through a textbook, reading an online blog, or watching a YouTube video, most people simply absorb the raw information that is provided after all, that is what those sources are generally used for. However, behind all that information lies deeper knowledge of a vast ocean of context. This context sets the criteria for effectiveness, a topic discussed in the essay How to Read Like a Writer by Mike Bunn. Bunn states that every text or video publisher has an intended audience that it aims to please, and they achieve those goals through a specific choice of conversation, selected diction, and an understanding of the consequences that could happen after the audience reads or watches their content. The correct choices increases the effectiveness of hooking the attention of their audience. There were several articles that displayed efforts of effectiveness for their target audience, but this essay will discuss one YouTubevideo that stood out amongst the rest. In the YouTube video How Wolves Change Rivers published by Sustainable Human, the narrator argues that the introductions of wolves to Yellowstone National Park not only altered the ecology of animals, but that they also brought upon massive improvements to the luscious environment as well. • 45. Is Bataille s Philosophy Something We Could Realistically... Is Bataille s philosophy something we could realistically live by? Critically discuss with reference to the concepts of unproductive expenditure and transgression. Bataille argues that in modern capitalist society, we are measured by our utility and production within this system. Material utility is restricted to production and to conserving goods whilst limited to reproduction and to the preservation of human life. As a result, we work within this framework where values, rules and laws have been created for us to work within, which, Bataille argues, restricts our liberty. Though utility is an apparent positive principle of capitalism, Bataille sees this as a principle of powerlessness and an incapability of being able to expend (Botting and Wilson, 1997, 192). He uses the example of a boy who wants to waste and destroy but cannot do this because he cannot justify it in utilitarian terms and is unaware that others also have this interest. The father of the boy is partly responsible for repressing the boy s desire to waste and destroy through things he provides for him: a home, clothes food and partial recreation. This does not actually satisfy what the son s desires are as there is something fundamental within the character of the son. Bataille is trying to demonstrate how in society, the father is like production, which provides us with the basic components of living but not what we really need and how this excess desire the boy has, needs to be satisfied. The five corners in new York cityis a prime example of immigrant based gangs just trying to protect themselves and gain identity in the new world. Even though the street gangs of the 19th century were widely feared by other citizens and rival gangs, they don t hold a candle to the threat that the gangs we have today to the safety of society. The delinquent activities of the street gangs of the early 20th century involved petty crimes and fighting with their rival gangs. By the end of the 20th Century gangs had became involved in more heinous crimes. By that time law enforcement officials had come ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After that time, however, gangs spread to smaller areas. It is true that the larger the population, the greater the likelihood of the existence of gangs in that area, in 2007 for example 86% of law enforcement agencies in larger cities reported gang problems, 50% of all suburban counties, 35% of all cities with a population of 2,500 to 49,999, and 15% of rural counties reported gang problems in their jurisdictions that year. The huge growth in gangs and gang membership slowed during the late 1990s 27,900 gangs with 774,000 gang members were active in the United States in 2008. Even though small cities and rural counties saw a decrease in gangs between 2007 and 2008, all jurisdictions saw an increase in gangs and gang members between 2002 and ... • 53. Milky Way Galaxy Research Paper In our Milky Way galaxy, there are over a hundred billion stars, and within the universe there are billions of galaxies (Classifying Stars). Astronomers have always come up with different techniques to make their jobs easier. One important technique in, not only astronomy but science itself, is trying to classify something into groups to find a certain pattern. Since there are so many stars in a single galaxy, astronomers must find methods for organization. Stars are not all the same, they vary in size, temperature, and brightness. To keep track of all these different characteristics, astronomers had to come up with a diagram. The Hertzsprung Russell diagram is one of the most useful plots for stellar astronomy (Classifying Stars). The diagram... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Her paper had to be approved by the director, Harlow Shapley. Harlow sent her thesis to Henry Norris Russell, who at the time was the dean of American Astronomers, and Harlow s mentor. Cecilia respected and feared Russell, because of his position and power. After reading her thesis, Russell at first found Cecilia s findings to be accurate. However, five weeks later he wrote Cecilia saying, there remains one very much more serious discrepancy... It is clearly impossible that hydrogen should be a million times more abundant than the metals. (Bartusiak p.34). Despite the quality of her research she believed what Russell had said to her and changed her thesis. After Russell found out that Cecilia was right all along, many astronomers described her work as the most brilliant Ph.D. thesis ever written in astronomy (Bartusiak p.34). Cecilia Payne s interpretation of Annie Jump Cannon s classification system made it possible to read the life stories of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 54. The Debate Of Knowledge And Belief The topic of knowledge and belief has been a subject of investigation and a primary field in philosophical research for centuries. Whether it was Aristotle or Descartes, multiple ideas on knowledge and belief arise, such as the epistemological theories of foundationalism or coherentism, which provide philosophical explanations to this debate. For the sake of this essay, and in my own opinion, knowledge should be distinguished from belief. Everyone is subject to different types of beliefs based on upbringing, however knowledge of basic items is universal, therefore it immediately becomes apparent that there is a clear distinction between the two concepts. Aristotle proposes an argument called the Regress argument, (Wrenn) this argument is essentially the debate of knowledge versus belief using the epistemological theories of knowledge. Aristotle takes the side of foundationalism based on the simple fact that it defends knowledge and it that knowledge requires basic justified beliefs. In the argument it states that coherentism is simply beliefs supported by other beliefs therefore leading to no concrete knowledge behind the beliefs. For example, if I say that next month is the April, it is justified by two other beliefs, that this month is March and the month after April is May (Delaney, 1976). This example displays that for justification of coherentism it is simply derived from further beliefs. However, for foundationalism, all beliefs are justified, which we can ... • 55. Who Is The Spinning Jenny And How Is It Significant To The... In 1764, during the Industrial Revolution, the textiles industry changed forever when the first spinning machine was invented. The Royal Society of Arts offered a prize for an invention that could spin six threads at once but would only need one person to attend to it. One of the inventors that took to the challenge was James Hargreaves, 1720 to 1778, who produced the Spinning Jenny, a machine that mechanically reproduced the actions of the hand spinner. The Spinning Jenny was significant to the development and progress of the Industrial Revolutionand it also had a momentous impact on not only yarnproduction but also people s lives, in particular people in England. Significance to the Industrial Revolution (development, progress): Expanding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The 1764 invention, that wasn t patented until 1770, had eight smaller wheels, instead of one, which allowed the operator to spin eight threads at the one time, as shown in source two. This modern day sketch shows the design and construction of the Spinning Jenny and how all eight different spindles were powered by a single wheel. This meant that one spinster could produce eight threads in the same time it had previously taken to produce one. This advance in spinning machinery meant that the quality and strength of yarn and cloth was greatly improved. Hargreaves invention best spun the short fibres of regular length, such as cotton. The cotton yarn produced was considered to be of very good quality. However, the wool yarn from the Spinning Jenny was quite unsatisfactory. This was due to the irregular lengths which resulted in lumpy, uneven ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
