A manometer is an instrument that uses a column of liquid to measure pressure. There are several types of manometers including U-tube manometers, well type manometers, barometers, inclined tube manometers, and micromanometers. Each type uses the hydrostatic balance principle where pressure is measured by the height of the liquid column supported. For example, a well type manometer has one leg as a simple tube and the other as a large well, allowing small displacements in the well to create large changes in height of the simple tube.
