2. Manometers
Manometers are used for measuring pressures by balancing the fluid
column of fluid against another column of fluid of known specific
gravity.
• Manometers can be classified as:
 Simple Manometer
 Differential Manometer

3. Manometers
• Simple Manometers
Simple monometers consists of glass tube having one of its end
connected to a point where pressure is to be measured and
other end is open to atmosphere.
• Types of Simple manometers are:
1) Piezometer
2) U-tube manometer
3) Single column manometer

4. Piezometer
• It consists of a glass tube inserted in the wall
of the vessel or pipe at the level of point at
which the intensity of pressure is to be
measured as shown in Fig.
• The other end of the piezometer is exposed to
air.
• The height of the liquid in the piezometer
gives the pressure head from which the
intensity of pressure can be calculated.

5. U- tube Manometer
• A U-tube manometer consists of a glass tube bent in U-Shape, one end of
which is connected to the point at which pressure is to be measured and
the other end is exposed to atmosphere.
• U-tube consists of a liquid of specific of gravity is greater than the
specific gravity of the liquid whose pressure intensity is to be measured.

6. Differential Manometers
• Differential manometers are used to measure the difference
of pressures between two points in a pipe or in two different
pipes
• Types of differential manometers are:
– Simple U-tube Differential manometers
– Inverted U-tube differential manometers

7. Simple U-Tube Differential
Manometers
The two points A and B are at different level and also contained
liquids of different specific gravity. These points are connected
to the U-tube manometer. Let the pressure at A and B are PA
and PB.

8. Inverted U-Tube Differential
Manometer
•It consists of an inverted U-tube having two
ends are connected to the pipes at points A
and B whose difference of pressure is to be
measured as shown in Fig.
•It is used for measuring the difference of
low pressures. Let the pressure at A is more
than the pressure at B.

9. Advantages, Disadvantages and Applications
Advantages :
 Simple in construction
 Low cost hence easy to buy.
 Very accurate and sensitive
 It can be used to measure other process variables.
Disadvantages :
 Fragile in construction.
 Very sensitive to temperature changes
Applications :
 It is used for low range pressure measurements.
 Extensively used in laboratories.
 Is used in Orifice meter and Venturi-meter for flow measurements.
 It is used for calibration of gauges and other instruments.
 It is used for measuring pressure drop in different joints and valves.
