HumorTools: An Adaptive Microtask Workflow for Crowdsourcing Humorhmslydia
Background on Lydia Chilton's crowd algorithms work, Maneesh Agrawala's algorithms for generating good designs from design principles, and past and future work on crowdsourcing humor
How does a designer fit into an organization as a leader alongside their client service, project management, and financial management peers? Or, as happens in many cases, how does a solo designer, studio owner, or in-house group determines that fine balance between the health of the studio from an operational perspective and nurturing a strong creative vision that guides both the client work and the studio culture?
Design isn't just about creating pretty pictures. It's about meeting basic human needs. In design, we identify problems by finding specific users with specific needs. Then we solve problems by prototyping and testing solutions with the user in their environment.

DIY UX: Give Your Users an Upgrade (Without Calling In a Pro)Whitney Hess
Have you fallen in love with your solution and forgotten the original problem? Are you certain that your product actually makes people’s lives better? Not every company can hire someone like me to help you listen to your users, so you’re gonna have to learn how to do some of this stuff yourself. I’ll show you techniques to find out who your users are, what they really need and how to go about giving it to them in an easy to use and pleasurable way. And it doesn’t have to bankrupt you or kill your release date.

As the web development landscape rapidly changes, good communication and collaboration between multiple job functions is key to not just a project’s success, but to a successful career as a front end developer. In this talk, we’ll discuss why it is important to grow yourself into a “T-shaped” developer - someone with deep knowledge in front end development, who can collaborate across multiple other disciplines. You'll leave knowing how to incorporate essential empathy and communication skills into your daily work life, leveling up your career, and the career of those around you.
Gamification Decks: Structure Gamification Projects with Design ThinkingDaniel Meusburger
Within this presentation I analyze how the process of Design Thinking might be a good fit for applying gamification on products or services. This assumption is based on various characteristics, but mainly its user-centric attributes and iterative process.
While this is mainly a theoretical analysis, I am currently experimenting with this approach and will update these slides at a later point. I am open for any discussion or suggestion.
Based on the article of my blog:

We make decisions every day driven by cognitive biases designed to save time and energy. These mental shortcuts serve us well. Marketers have used this knowledge to build successful marketing strategies for many years. This knowledge can also be used to build engaging products. Behavioral design provides a model for thinking about forming habits and motivating users. Identifying these user stories are critical to build lasting products. They link core user needs with business outcomes. These ideas drive products such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. In this talk, we’ll explore using behavioral design to build an engagement loop and better backlog. Iʼll share how to integrate these ideas into an Agile development process.

Working remotely has many benefits but also some obvious and non-obvious challenges. Discussions about remote work also often tend to be generic, however each discipline require its own kind of variations, and design isn’t different.
A lot of the tools available to designers are meant to be used in person, but what if we happen to work remotely, or we want to switch a product team to being remote? How to build trust, gather feedback and craft a unified vision? This talk takes inspiration from some of the practices of Automattic’s teams to overcome some of the unique challenges of remote working.
These solutions will also be beneficial to any designer who desires to engage with open source projects, as they are by definition remote.

Design is not everything, but it somehow gets into everything.
Ralph Caplan, By Design
Design Thinking is …
… human-centered, collaborative, possibility-driven, options-focused, and iterative.
… the confidence that new, better things are possible and that you can make them happen.
Ralph Caplan, born January 4, 1925 is a design consultant, writer and public speaker. After serving in the Marines in WWII, he graduated from Earlham College and then went on to Indiana University for his Masters Degree. He later taught at Wabash College before moving to NYC where he became editor of Industrial Design.
He is the author of By Design: Why There are No Locks on the Bathroom Doors in the Hotel Louis XIV and Other Object Lessons.
He is considered a founding father of modern design thinking.

Roots of Design Thinking…
Developed/Made famous by Tim Brown at IDEO, taught at the Stanford School of Design.
Very influential in design circles, but becoming more influential in business
DEFINITION:
“A making-based problem solving process that is rooted in human empathy, done iteratively in collaborative multi-disciplinary teams.”

When did Design Thinking Become Small?
“Instead of starting with technology, the team started with people and culture…”
Design vs. Design Thinking
Design became small when it became the tool of consumerism
“Instead of starting with technology, the team started with people and culture…”
Design Thinking is about collaborative human creativity applied using a specific mindset and process framework focused on solving a wicked problem

Lunchtime presentation: Intersections of Product Management - C.Todd Lombardo...ProductCamp Boston
In today’s hyper-specialized world there are many silos that emerge in organizations. These silos can hinder your forward motion for your product. As a product manager, you are constantly challenged to break down these silos in order to move your idea into your product. Further, you must find a way to incorporate the customers and users voice in a constructive and rigorous manner. We’ll talk about a few ways to approach these situations from a diligent, design-centric lens and how you can implement these within your team or organization.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

42. Documenting the Ritual Activity
February 26, 2019; 00:00 - 01:10
What I felt while doing the ritual:
Found a star twinkling
1.
A municipal parking sign board on one of the street lights
2.
Found several stars twinkling in the night sky
3.
I feel calm, looking up to the sky, observing the stars
4.
Saw the light reflection on one of the windows to be distorted, indicating that the glass is concave.5.
Also found “i 2 0” written on top of one of the buildings
Feeling calmer and more comfortable because of the music and the blanket
6.
The apartment in the building in front of me has turned on a fan when it’s cold outside
7.
Found 2 trees outside my window. I always thought that there was one.
8.
Starting to feel happy about the reduced inbox
9.
There is a gradient in the color of buildings: red then orange (from what appears at night), and then10.
yellow
Laundry delivery vehicle at 12:30 am (U-Haul)
11.
Inbox 0 in 2 mailboxes! Feeling relaxed
12.
Drill machine sound interrupting the soothing music I have played inside
13.
Change of music to counter the drill sound
14.
All chats deleted. All groups exited. No more digital trash. I feel free and relaxed.
15.
I wanted to hold on to a lot of things, but forced myself to let go.
