Getting started with UX research October 2017.pptxCarol Rossi
You know you need customer insights to make good design decisions but without a dedicated researcher on your team how do you run the research? These tips will help you get started.
Getting Started with UX Research OCUX Camp CRossi Aug 2017Carol Rossi
As user experience professionals, we all realize the importance of getting real insights from real users and not just making decisions based on a hunch. In this talk, you'll discover how to make those insights actionable within your company.
No matter what we make, we have to understand people. Whether you create reports, tools, services, or software, a person is ultimately going to use your product. In this workshop you will learn how to find out what your users truly need, what motivates them, what jobs they need your product for, and how to leverage what you learn from them so you can deliver something that is useful, desired and possibly even delightful. You will get hands-on practice in crafting interview questions that help uncover valuable insights, conducting successful interviews, and forming solid personas to guide your product development. At the end, you will be armed with knowledge and methods that you can use immediately to improve your work.

Introductory lecture on Design Thinking given by Mark Billinghurst as part of the HITD 201 course taught at the University of Canterbury. Taught on December 9th 2013
Why is this so hard? Understanding the challenges that inhibit design in your...Adam Connor
Design has been heralded as the savior of product and service offerings, and lately companies are scrambling to pick up designers everywhere they can find them. Innovation centers are springing up like mushrooms and it seems everybody is talking about the importance of knowing and understanding their audience. However, these new ways of working and thinking don’t seem to take hold, so people keep doing things the way they´ve always done them and users continue to suffer.
What causes these organizations with such good intentions and great talent to struggle?
An organization may be aware that it needs to change, but knowing what and how to change is hard. And for change to happen, organizations have to be ready for change. Using culture as a lens, we examine how people work together, how they believe things should work, and which values they share.
Exploratory user research (How to figure out what to test)Dhyana Scarano
A look at how we conducted open, exploratory user research to figure out how we could make significant jumps in conversion rates at CareerFoundry.
Analytics and tests only get us so far, but to have a bigger impact we need to explore, and learn something totally new. Something that we don't know we don't know.
Presentation from 2013 NextGen conference in Washington DC. Peer Insight's Natalie Foley and Jessica Dugan presented how to use Customer Journey Mapping to understand your customer.
Critique is a vital skill for any good designer. Here we talk about it's application in everyday life as well as the formal work we do with clients as UX Designers.
This talk has been given at a number of conferences by myself and the amazing Aaron Irizaryy (http://www.thisisaaronslife.com/)
We'll be keeping the most up-to-date version of the slides uploaded here. If you'd like a copy from a previous iteration, please get in touch with either Aaron or myself, and we'll happily get one to you.

If you've interviewed for a content strategy role recently, you may have been asked for a portfolio. But CS deliverables don't always lend themselves to sharing--who wants to see an inventory spreadsheet? And what do you do when your work is all client-confidential? This event took place at the Seattle Content Strategy Meetup designed to help job seekers or consultants create engaging portfolios, presented by Masa Zokaei Edie.
This presentation and hands-on workshop will describe the process of conducting user interviews at Pivotal Labs Denver.

Design is not everything, but it somehow gets into everything.
Ralph Caplan, By Design
Design Thinking is …
… human-centered, collaborative, possibility-driven, options-focused, and iterative.
… the confidence that new, better things are possible and that you can make them happen.
Ralph Caplan, born January 4, 1925 is a design consultant, writer and public speaker. After serving in the Marines in WWII, he graduated from Earlham College and then went on to Indiana University for his Masters Degree. He later taught at Wabash College before moving to NYC where he became editor of Industrial Design.
He is the author of By Design: Why There are No Locks on the Bathroom Doors in the Hotel Louis XIV and Other Object Lessons.
He is considered a founding father of modern design thinking.

Roots of Design Thinking…
Developed/Made famous by Tim Brown at IDEO, taught at the Stanford School of Design.
Very influential in design circles, but becoming more influential in business
DEFINITION:
“A making-based problem solving process that is rooted in human empathy, done iteratively in collaborative multi-disciplinary teams.”

When did Design Thinking Become Small?
“Instead of starting with technology, the team started with people and culture…”
Design vs. Design Thinking
Design became small when it became the tool of consumerism

Video watching
Design is in the details
From the experience at IDEO, this video talks about the importance of thinking about the details in
everyday life. Digging deep in a problem to solve it gives it a more relevant result.
It also talks about the importance of thinking from the user’s perspective (child wardrobe, patient
experience). The idea is to think of design as a part of the system, and that people are unconsciously
designing in it. Finally, it talks about the thought of keeping a broader view at thinking. A narrow
(focused) view puts a constraint on our thought.
The shape of ideation by Stefan Mumaw
Creativity comprises of relevance and novelty. Novelty comes when we think of stupid ideas. It is the
spark of these ideas that we start generating more ideas - the ones which aren’t thought before, mostly
because they were more “practical” to think about.
So, although the first few ideas that we think about would be very relevant to a problem we are trying
to solve, they won’t be as novel, because in the beginning, we are probably not thinking enough or
questioning ourselves with that is the real problem and how can we solve it in an out-of-the-box way.
Design Statement
Try to frame the most relevant question related to the problem you wish to solve.
My thought:
SOP Adherence
I want company employees to adhere to SOPs while they are working on the job
My Design Statement:
I am exploring the ways in which SOP is followed in companies because I want to find out how the
process of process (SOP) adherence goes from documentation to implementation in order to create a
better way for employees to follow the company processes.
I will be approaching this project from the lens of an employee following those company processes.
I am exploring ____ because I want to find out how _____ in order to ______. I will be approaching this
project from the lens of a ______.
