Listening Comprehension
 DEVELOPING LISTENING SKILL
 Determine why what the speaker says is important to you.
 Take responsibility for what is being said. Responsibility of
interest and understanding lies with you and not with the
speaker. Remember, learning is up to you.
 If you can’t hear arrange things surrounding you so you
can.
 Listen to what speaker is saying. You don’t like to hear the
speaker of your dislike. Again, be sure you understand
something before you reject it. (Contd…)

Listening Comprehension
 Look for the speaker’s pattern of organization. You must be
able to recognize what the speaker wants to say (intention)
and how he is coming to it(explanation).
 Look for the main ideas of presentation. If you have
problems in differentiating between the important and the
trivial get coached in Academic Skills
 Don’t let your mind wander. “thoughts move far more
rapidly than the swiftest mouth”. Increase your attention
plan. Continue to practice the habit of attention.
 Take systematic notes while you listen. Even if you
understand everything, write it down because you may not
remember it latter.

 Calling the subject dull
Bad listeners often find the subject dry and dusty and
fail in paying attention.
Good listener, even at hearing the same subject several
times, try to find something useful.

 Criticizing the speaker
bad listeners find faults with the way the speaker
looks, acts and talks.
Good listeners are ignorant to the speakers
mannerisms.

 Getting over-stimulated
Listening efficiency is zero if the listener reacts
strongly to one part that they miss what follows next.
Understand the speakers point of view fully before to
accept or reject it.

 Listening only for facts
Bad listeners listen only for the facts.
Good listeners listen for the main ideas.
Need not worry about facts, they supply the context to
the ideas

 Trying to outline everything
Most of the speeches are built around outline.
Good listeners are flexible. They get used to their note
taking to the pattern of the speaker. They make
outline, write summary, list facts and principles but
they are not rigid about it.

 Faking attention
Good listening is not relaxed and passive.
It is dynamic, it is constructive.
It is energy consuming, it is plain hard work.
Attention means…
Collection of tensions that can be released only by
getting facts or ideas that the speaker is trying to say.

 Tolerating distractions
Poor listeners are easily distracted and may even create
disturbances that affect their as well others hearing
efficiency.
Good listeners try to adjust to the distractions.

 Choosing only what is easy
 Avoiding even moderately difficult speeches may
handicap the use of listening as a learning tool.

 Letting emotion-laden words get in the way
Some words carry such an emotion that they cause
some listeners to tune a speaker out.

 Wasting the differential between speech and thought
speed
Good listener utilizes time lag between speed of
speech and thinking in
 anticipating the next point
 identifying supporting material
 recapitulating (summarizing)

  • 3. Listening Comprehension  DEVELOPING LISTENING SKILL  Determine why what the speaker says is important to you.  Take responsibility for what is being said. Responsibility of interest and understanding lies with you and not with the speaker. Remember, learning is up to you.  If you can’t hear arrange things surrounding you so you can.  Listen to what speaker is saying. You don’t like to hear the speaker of your dislike.   • 4. Listening Comprehension  Look for the speaker’s pattern of organization. You must be able to recognize what the speaker wants to say (intention) and how he is coming to it(explanation).  Look for the main ideas of presentation. If you have problems in differentiating between the important and the trivial get coached in Academic Skills  Don’t let your mind wander. “thoughts move far more rapidly than the swiftest mouth”. Increase your attention plan. Continue to practice the habit of attention.  Take systematic notes while you listen. Listening Comprehension  Calling the subject dull Bad listeners often find the subject dry and dusty and fail in paying attention. Good listener, even at hearing the same subject several times, try to find something useful. “there is no such thing as an uninteresting subject, only uninterested people” -G K Chesterton nandkishore sarap

They get used to their note taking to the pattern of the speaker. They make outline, write summary, list facts and principles but they are not rigid about it. nandkishore sarap
  • 11. Listening Comprehension  Faking attention Good listening is not relaxed and passive. It is dynamic, it is constructive. It is energy consuming, it is plain hard work.
