This document reviews active power filtering techniques for power systems. It begins with an abstract that defines active filters as power electronic circuits that use power switches and passive elements like inductors and capacitors to control current harmonics and reactive power. It then provides an introduction that discusses the increasing use of distributed generation and renewable energy sources integrating with grids, which can cause power quality issues. The document then describes different active power filtering techniques in detail, including shunt active power filters, series active power filters, and unified power quality conditioners. It reviews several specific techniques reported in other research publications that use active power filters with photovoltaic systems, neural networks based control, and nonlinear inductance modeling.
Enhancement in Power Quality With Grid Interconnection of Renewable Energy So...IJERA Editor
At present the Renewable energy resources (RES) are being increasingly connected in distribution systems utilizing power electronic converters. This paper presents a novel control strategy for achieving maximum benefits from these grid-interfacing inverters when installed in 3-phase 4-wire distribution systems. The inverter is controlled to perform as a multi-function device by incorporating active power filter functionality. The inverter can thus be utilized as power converter to inject power generated from RES to the grid and shunt APF to compensate current unbalance, load current harmonics, load reactive power demand and load neutral current. All of these functions may be accomplished either individually or simultaneously. With such a control, the combination of grid-interfacing inverter and the 3-phase 4-wire linear/non-linear unbalanced load at point of common coupling appears as balanced linear load to the grid. This new control concept is demonstrated with extensive MATLAB/Simulink simulation studies and validated through digital signal processor-based laboratory experimental results.

A Single-Phase Dual-Stage PV-Grid System with Active FilteringIAES-IJPEDS
Integrating photovoltaic based electricity into the grid and power quality
improvement have become two major issues in electrical system. Formerly,
these can be solved by using two converter systems separately, a PV-Grid
System and an active power filter. But recent technology uses only a
converter system to do both function. An existed shunt active power filter
(SAPF) can be modified to form a dual-stage PV-Grid with active filtering
capability. In this paper, a PV-Grid System that is capable to transfer all
power generated by PV modules and reduce harmonic contents is proposed.
The system was formed by connecting a boost chopper as a Maximum Power
Point Tracker and PV modules to the DC-link capacitor of a single-phase
SAPF. It just needed a current transducer and also required simpler control
circuits. A voltage controller was needed to achieve power equilibrium while
a current controller was needed to make the grid current sinusoidal with unity
power factor. To verify the analysis, simulations and experiments were done.
Normally, the character of the wind energy as a renewable energy sources has uncertainty in generation. To resolve the Optimal Power Flow (OPF) drawback, this paper proposed a replacement Hybrid Multi Objective Artificial Physical Optimization (HMOAPO) algorithmic rule, which does not require any management parameters compared to different meta-heuristic algorithms within the literature. Artificial Physical Optimization (APO), a moderately new population-based intelligence algorithm, shows fine performance on improvement issues. Moreover, this paper presents hybrid variety of Animal Migration Optimization (AMO) algorithmic rule to express the convergence characteristic of APO. The OPF drawback is taken into account with six totally different check cases, the effectiveness of the proposed HMOAPO technique is tested on IEEE 30-bus, IEEE 118-bus and IEEE 300-bus check system. The obtained results from the HMOAPO algorithm is compared with the other improvement techniques within the literature. The obtained comparison results indicate that proposed technique is effective to succeed in best resolution for the OPF drawback.
A fault-tolerant photovoltaic integrated shunt active power filter with a 27-...IJECEIAES
This paper introduces a fault-tolerant shunt active power filter (SAPF). The novility in of this work is that it poposes a solutions to increase the reliability of shunt active power filter to maintain its operation under a single-phase open-circuit fault in the SAPF. This will increase the reliability of the whole power system. The SAPF is composed of a 4-leg 27-level inverter based on asymmetric cascaded H-bridge topology. If an open-circuit fault is introduced to the operation of the SAPF, a special control technique will be implemented and the redundant leg of the SAPF will be activated. The faulttolerant SAPF can do many tasks under healthy operating conditions and post and open circuit fault depending on the state of charge (SOC) of the batteries. It can mitigate harmonics in the power system, improve power factor in the system by injecting reactive power, and inject real power to the system. The proposed SAPF is tested and simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and the results have shown a significant improvement in total harmonics distortion (THD) of the source current from 13.9% to 3.9% under the normal operating condition and from 42% to 8.4% post and open circuit fault.
This Paper mainly deals with the implementation of Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) in Pulse Width Modulation control of Single Ended Primary Inductor Converter (SEPIC). Generally PID, Fuzzy techniques are being used to control DC – DC converter. This paper presents a ANFIS controller based SEPIC converter for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) operation of a photovoltaic (PV) system. The ANFIS controller for the SEPIC MPPT scheme shows a high precision in current transition and keeps the voltage without any changes represented in small steady state error and small overshoot. The proposed scheme ensures optimal use of photovoltaic (PV) array, wind turbine and proves its efficacy in variable load conditions, unity and lagging power factor at the inverter output (load) side. The performance of the proposed ANFIS based MPPT operation of SEPIC converter is compared to those of the conventional PID and Fuzzy based SEPIC converter. The results show that the proposed ANFIS based MPPT scheme for SEPIC can transfer power to about 20 percent (approx) more than conventional system.
This paper presents the control for Shunt Active Power (SAPF) filter in photovoltaic (PV) systems connected to the grid. The proposed configuration of the system consists of a photovoltaic array that connected to the grid through the three-phase inverter topology that also serves as an active filter. Photovoltaic is coupled in parallel with the direct curret (DC) side of the active filter. With this configuration, can be obtained three advantages, namely the elimination of harmonic currents caused by nonlinear load, reactive power injection, and injection of active power generated photovoltaic. The p-q Theory is used to calculate the harmonic reference current to be used to control the active filter coupled fotovoltaic in generating anti-harmonic currents. The results show that system can reduce harmonic distortion from THD 27.22% to be THD 1.05%, whereas when the active power from photovoltaic injected, the THD become 2.01%. Power sharing can also be seen from this study.
Optimum Reactive Power Calculation for Reducing Power System Operation CostPower System Operation
Reactive power plays a key role in voltage control and system stability. Various Volt/VAR techniques are utilized in electric power systems to maintain the voltage profile within a defined acceptable range and accordingly provide reliability, stability, and economic benefits. Reactive power has been commonly generated through large-scale synchronous generators or distributed capacitor banks to provide proper transmission and distribution level system management, however, reactive power can be further used as an effective means to reduce total system operation cost. This is to be achieved by adjusting nodal reactive power and accordingly impact the network power flow. The reactive power adjustment is becoming more common as a result of growing distributed energy resources (DERs) with reactive power control capability. The increasing number of inverter-coupled DERs, in particular, provides a unique opportunity to benefit from the reactive power provided by these resources. This paper develops a modified optimal power flow model to determine optimal nodal reactive powers that minimize the system operation cost. The applicability and performance of the proposed model is verified on IEEE 57-bus standard test systems.
Power Quality Improvement at Distribution Level for Grid Connected Renewable ...IJERA Editor
The non-linear load current harmonics may result in voltage harmonics and can create a serious PQ problem in
the power system network. Active power filters (APF) are extensively used to compensate the load current
harmonics and load unbalance at distribution level. This results in an additional hardware cost. However, in this
project it has incorporated the features of APF in the conventional inverter interfacing renewable with the grid,
without any additional hardware cost. Here, the main idea is the maximum utilization of inverter rating which is
most of the time underutilized due to intermittent nature of RES. The grid-interfacing inverter can effectively be
utilized to perform the four important functions they are to transfer active power harvested from the renewable
resources (wind, solar, etc.), load reactive power demand support, current harmonics compensation at PCC and
current unbalance and neutral current compensation in case of 3-phase 4-wire system. Moreover, with adequate
control of grid-interfacing inverter, all the four objectives can be accomplished either individually or
simultaneously. The PQ constraints at the PCC can therefore be strictly maintained within the utility standards
without additional hardware cost.

In a distributed generation system, divers renewable agents are connected to the low voltage 3 phase utility grid by an inverter which is used as power condition and must assurance the higher efficiency of the renewable agent. Injection of power generated by the wind turbine system into an electric grid mainly effects the power quality. The performance of this wind turbine and its power quality is determined on the basis of its measurement of power ratings as per IEEE standards. The influence of the wind turbine in the grid system concerning the power quality measurements are the active power, reactive power, variation of voltage, flicker, harmonics, and electrical behavior of switching operation. To mitigate the power quality problems this paper proposes the shunt compensator techniques. Here, the proposed system is verified experimentally using both STATCOM and TSC compensators. This control schemes for grid connected wind energy system is simulated using Matlab/Simulink.
Comparative of Conventional and Intelligence Controller based Hybrid Generati...IJERD Editor
Harmonic pollution of the power supply system has risen significantly in recent years due primarily
to an increase of non-linear loads connected to the utility through residential, commercial and industrial
customers. This paper, proposed a solution to eliminate the harmonics introduced by the nonlinear loads in
steady and in transients. It presents a predictive current control strategy for achieving maximum benefits from
these grid-interfacing inverters implementing conventional DC link controller and intelligence controller, when
installed in 3-phase 4-leg voltage source inverter (VSI). The inverter is controlled to perform as a multi-function
device by incorporating active power filter functionality. The use of a four-leg voltage-source inverter allows
the compensation of current harmonic components, as well as unbalanced current generated by three-phase
nonlinear loads. Renewable energy resources (RES) are being increasingly connected in distribution systems
utilizing power electronic converters. The compensation performance of the proposed active power filter and the
associated hybrid PV/Wind system generation scheme with new control scheme is demonstrated to improve the
power quality features is simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK.
Mitigation of the Harmonics under Reactive Power Compensation by SHPF-TCR Usi...IJERA Editor
In this paper, a combined system of a thyristor-controlled reactor (TCR) and a shunt hybrid power filter
(SHPF)has been designed by MATLAB/SIMULINK approach for harmonic and reactive power compensation.
The quality of the power is effected by many factors like harmonic contamination, due to the increment of nonlinear
loads, sag and swell due to the switching of the loads etc. Also control schemes based on PI and Fuzzy
logic controllers have been proposed to mitigate the harmonics and neutral current . The proposed methodology
not only reduces the complexity but also offers simplicity to implement and increases reliability of the system.
These control strategies also help in achieving a low cost highly effective control. The performance is also
observed under influence of utility side disturbances such as harmonics, flicker and spikes with Non-Linear and
Reactive Loads with different control strategies.
report of Improvement of the Electric Power Quality Using Series Active and S...Vikram Rawani
The increase of nonlinear loads due to the proliferation of electronic equipment causes power quality in the power system to deteriorate. Harmonic current drawn from a supply by the nonlinear load results in the distortion of the supply voltage waveform at the point of common coupling (PCC) due to the source impedance. Both distorted current and voltage may cause end-user equipment to malfunction, conductors to overheat and may reduce the efficiency and life expectancy of the equipment connected at the PCC.

Now-a-days, power generation and utilization became more complicated which further affects the economy of a country. The available non-renewable energy sources that supply the demanded power do not consider environmental challenges like global warming and pollution. This leads to the development of power generation based on Renewable Energy Resources (RES). These RES are connected to the grid through power electronic converters which offer countless power quality issues that must be rectified to deliver a quality power to the end users. The proposed work uses a three phase Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) based Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF) fed by solar Photo Voltaic (PV) system to eliminate current harmonics at the source side of the grid. The output of the PV system is given to a boost converter along with self–lift single-ended primary-inductor converter (SEPIC) for supplying high voltage gain which is accompanied by a Perturb & Observe Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT).The main objective of this paper is to eliminate the current harmonics at the grid side using SAPF. Also, the proposed SAPF is used for exporting the power generated from PV to the grid. The overall system performance is validated with a help of MATLAB/SIMULINK.
PV Source Integrated Micro-Grid for Power Quality Improvement using MPPT Tech...Niteesh Shanbog
The demand for Electrical energy is increasing day by day as it can be easily converted to another form of energy. All consumers expect Electrical energy with high power quality. Most of the commercial and industrial loads are inductive in nature and need power electronic circuits/ controllers to get smooth control of the equipment. This, in turn, leads to the injection of harmonics into the system, hence the power quality is affected. The above problem needs to be addressed and eliminated. In this paper, a shunt active power filter is used to mitigate the harmonics. Id-Iq control is used to analyse the performance of the filter and is simulated using MATLAB software. The MPPT controller is used to improving the power quality of the system.
This paper focus on distribution system by applying different control techniques in order to improve the performance of the system. In the distribution system mainly concentrate on power quality issues like reactive power control, harmonic elimination, power factor correction, etc. Because of power quality problems voltage, current, frequency are continuously changing in power systems. These changes will effects the performance of power systems. Power quality problems can be compensated by placing DSTATCOM which is connected at PCC in parallel. It is shunt connected VSI along with the filters, with the help of DSTATCOM voltage sag, swell and THD can be controlled. This paper presents detailed explanation about performance and configuration of latest control techniques to control the DSTATCOM.

This paper displays the upgrade of voltage droops, Harmonic mutilation and low power figure utilizing Distribution Static Compensator (D-STATCOM) with LCL Passive Filter in Distribution Framework. At whatever point there is an entrance of photovoltaic cell energy to the low voltage appropriated matrix, there happen the issue of confuse in voltage and recurrence in the system, maybe brought on by non-direct loads, creating music. The model depends on the Voltage Source Converter (VSC) guideline. The D-STATCOM infuses a current into the framework to alleviate the voltage lists. LCL Passive Filter Was then added to D-STATCOM to enhance symphonies bending and low power figure. The reproductions were performed utilizing MATLAB SIMULINK.
Simulation of Shunt Active Power Filter Based on p q Theoryijtsrd
This paper introduces design and simulation of a low cost shunt active power filter, which allows dynamic power factor correction and harmonic compensation for a nonlinear load. One of the most important features of the shunt active filter system proposed is its versatility over a variety of different conditions. The active filter controller is based on the Instantaneous power theory p q theory , which monitors the load current and injects equal amplitude and opposite phase compensation currents to neutralise load current harmonics. The application of the positive sequence voltage detector from within the active filter controller is the key component of the system. The positive sequence voltage detector gives incredible versatility to the application of the active filter, because it can be installed and compensate for load current harmonics even when the input voltage is highly distorted and unbalanced. The controller algorithm is carried out using MATLAB Simulink. Dr. G. Harmonic enhancement in microgrid with applications on sensitive loadsIJECEIAES
Power quality issues are an important and growing problem in microgrid. There are two reasons; the more active consumer is participating in the power sector, the use of renewable energy which having a great impact on voltage variation. This paper discusses power quality disturbance and especially harmonic distortion issues in microgrid, and suggests a solution to maintain the operation of the distribution system within power quality standard. To protect sensitive loads from harmonics produced by the grid and by renewable energy sources, passive harmonic filter has been proposed in this paper. The electrical system of a nuclear research reactor as sensitive loads is designed by using Electrical Transient Analyzer Program (ETAP) software. The results show these technical issues are presented with their influence on electrical voltage and harmonic specter.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
