The document summarizes an experimental study on the effect of lateral reinforcement and mineral admixtures on short concrete columns. In the first phase, short columns were cast with varying volumetric ratios and spacing of lateral steel reinforcement. In the second phase, rice husk ash (RHA) was used as a mineral admixture in short columns. The columns were tested to determine their ultimate load capacity. Test results showed that increasing the volumetric ratio of steel reinforcement and using 10% RHA both increased the strength and ductility of the columns. Brittle failure was observed in columns without RHA or tightly spaced reinforcement. Zones of rupture at the top and bottom decreased with less reinforcement spacing. Compressive strength generally increased with the

SHEAR PERFORMANCE OF FIBER REINFORCED SELF COMPACTING CONCRETE DEEP BEAMSIAEME Publication
The self-compacting concrete (SCC) is the newest innovating category of high performance concrete. The shear behavior of Fiber Reinforced Self-Compacted Concrete (FRSCC) deep beams was investigated. The experimental program consisted of twelve simply supported beams tested up to failure under four-point load. The key parameters covered in this investigation were steel fibers ratios (0.0, 0.50, 0.75 & 1.00%) and the effective shear span to depth ratio; a/d that varied from 0.6 to 1.0. Also, the main flexure reinforcement ratio was variable (1.0, 1.60 and 2.20 percent). In addition, vertical and horizontal web reinforcement effect was investigated. The mid-span deflection, cracks, reinforcement and concrete strains of the tested beams were recorded and compared. Test results pointed out that the steel fibers enhanced the cracking load, ultimate capacity, displacement and energy absorption of the tested FRSCC deep beams.

15 experimental study for strengthening of rc rectangular columns with anchor...Ahmed Ebid
Debonding between CFRP sheets and concrete surface is one of the most important modes of failure. The common solution to
prevent this mode of failure is to extend the CFRP sheets by enough length to avoid debonding. A more advanced technique is to anchor the CFRP sheets to the concrete element using either steel or CFRP anchors. The aim of this research is to study the effect of using CFRP anchors on the capacity of concentric and eccentric RC columns. In order to achieve that goal, ten specimens of RC columns divided into two sets were tested. The first set was tested under concentric load, while the other set was tested under eccentric load. Each set had one control sample, while the other four samples were wrapped with CFRP bands. Two of the wrapped samples were anchored and the others were not. The spacing between CFRP wraps was varied between 80 and 200 mm. The results showed that the concentric and eccentric capacity of the sample increased with decreasing the spacing between CFRP bands as long as the eccentricity is small enough to cause
compression failure mode. But for samples with tension failure caused by large eccentricity, the CFRP bands have no effect on the capacity. It was also noted that anchors have no significant effect on the axial capacity of the samples

This paper presents the effect of construction joints on the performance of
reinforced self-compacting concrete slender beams. The experimental program
included casting and testing four beams with dimensions of 125×150×1000 mm. The
first beam is without construction joint as a reference specimen, the second beam is of
horizontal construction joint at mid-depth of the beam, the third beam is of vertical
construction joint at mid-span (maximum bending moment point) and the fourth beam
is of vertical construction joint on fourth-span (maximum shear region). The test
results showed that the effect of construction joint on the ultimate load was more
significant than that on the first crack load, also, the results showed that the beam of
horizontal construction joint gave better structural performance as compared with the
other cases of the construction joint, in which the first crack load decreased 6.7% and
the ultimate load decreased 26.7%as compared with the reference beam. Also the
results showed that the beam with vertical construction joint on the fourth-span
represented the less efficiency case, in which the first crack load decreased 16.7% and
ultimate load decreased 56.2% as compared with the reference beam. Furthermore
the load-deflection becomes less stiff with presence construction joint especially
beyond the first crack load.
EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS ON COMPRESSION BEHAVIOR PARAMETERS OF NSC AND SC...IAEME Publication
A total of six intermediate columns with same cross sectional area of 125mm X 125mm were cast and tested. Experimental study was conducted to know the behavior of intermediate columns under axial load made out of Normal strength concrete (NSC) and Self-compacting concrete (SCC). Main objective of this study was to compare the behavior of NSC intermediate columns and SCC intermediate columns for various percentage of steel. Axial load ratio, stiffness ratio were the main parameters which increased as the axial load increased. However in this study, special attention was given on stiffness degradation, energy absorption, ultimate load carrying capacity, shortening index of each intermediate column. The results showed that shortening index, axial load ratio, stiffness ratio and stiffness degradation increased with increase in axial load.

The current paper is a report on the preparation and testing of 10 reinforced concrete column specimens of (120x120) mm2 cross section and 1000 mm height, for the experimental clarification of the behavior of columns under the influence of pure axial loads. The research addresses the influences of some parameters and conditions on the mentioned behavior, including concrete type (normal strength, high strength or modified reactive powder concrete), the amount of reinforcement and the percentage of steel fibers. The effects of the above variables on the ultimate capacity, failure mode, stiffness, ductility and axial load-lateral displacement behavior were studied. It has been found that increasing the compressive strength and steel reinforcement ratio lead to increasing the ultimate capacity and stiffness of the tested columns. The effectiveness of increasing the steel fibers ratio is manifest in increasing the ultimate strength, ductility, and decreasing the stiffness and the ductility of the tested columns.
ENHANCED FERROCEMENT JACKETS FOR STRENGTHENING LONG REINFORCED CONCRETE COLUMNS IAEME Publication
Strengthening slender reinforced concrete (RC) columns is a challenge because
their sensitivity to overall buckling and the combination of the bending and
compressive stresses. This paper presents experimental study for strengthening twenty
long RC columns using enhanced ferrocement jackets. The column specimens have
slenderness ratio of 17.6 and two different cross-sections (square and rectangular).
The utilized expanded metal mesh layers have different weights, lengths and numbers
for each jacket. The twenty strengthened specimens and four reference non-jacketed
specimens were tested under concentric compression loading. The results
demonstrated the effectiveness of the ferrocement jacket in improving the column
capacity, increasing the stiffness, and reducing the lateral deformation. The
significance of the jackets is more evident for long RC columns with larger crosssection area, and for jackets with larger volume fraction of metal mesh layers at the
middle-third of the column height.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
