Introduction to control
systems

Modeling
 Modeling of engineering systems means to determine the mathematical
representation of the system.
 The aim of mathematical model:
 Study the performance of the existing system.
 Design anew system.
 Mathematical model is the first step to design the control required for the system.
Types of engineering systems
 Mechanical system
 Electrical systems.
 Electromechanical system.
 Communication system
 Information technology system.
 Chemical system.
 Transportation system.
How to begin to make modeling to
engineering system
 The first step to study the system is to answer the following questions
 What are the inputs to the system?
 What are the output of the systems?
 What is the main input to the system?
 What is the main output of the system?
 What is the function of the system? (function mean
convert main input to the main output )
 What are the unwanted output from the system?
 Draw a block diagram for the system showing the output and the inputs?
 What is the type of the system?
 What are the main subsystems elements?
Examples
 Make modeling to electric water pump
 Electric power - water with low pressure
 Water with high pressure - heat - noise
 Water with low pressure
 Water with high pressure
 Convert water with low pressure to water with high pressure
 Heat and noise
 Electromechanical system

Examples
 Power supply
 Ac electric power 220 volt
 Dc electric power
 Convert ac to dc
