INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION
- happens when different people from diverse
backgrounds meet and talk with each other.
- Is wrongly misinterpreted as communication with
foreigners alone.
- covers inter – ethnic, inter – religious, and even
interregional communication, as well as communication
among individuals of different sexual orientations.
* This discipline is important as it gives an insight on how
to behave when we meet people from different culture,
beliefs and religions.
INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION
- Is a necessary skill in a global village,
where various groups have to deal with
people of diverse backgrounds.
Queenie Anne R. Alfonso
ABM 101
• Demonstrate your willingness to meet other at least
halfway by learning a few phrases in their language. A
few phrases, even those as simple as good morning,
good evening, and thank you will go a long way
• Talk to people who know the culture about common
traps and problems.
• Talk to people who know the
culture about common traps and
problems.
• Adjust your behavior and do not always expect
others to adapt to you. Do not be offended if
someone unwittingly does something that you find
difficult to accept. You do not have to accept it, but it
is best to explain politely why you find it hard to
understand.
• Check your understanding and that of the other
party. The best way to avoid misunderstanding is to
listen carefully and regularly check on each other’s
understanding in the course of a conversation.
• Asks questions to make sure that you accurately
understand the other’s message, and also asks the
person to explain what you have said to ensure that
they understood you.
• Do not be afraid to apologize. You can usually see
quite quickly if you have caused offense. The fastest
way to manage the situation is to apologize and ask
what caused you to offend the person. A confession
of total ignorance will often go a long way to
mitigate offense, ignoring it will just offend further.
• Use local television to learn about behavioral
issues and norms. You would not want to rely on
television dramas as your only source of
information, but they can provide useful insights.
• Reflect on your experience. As with so many
aspects in life, a little reflection about your
experience can help you put it in context, especially
if you are able to discuss it with someone else in a
similar position.
* Having intercultural skills means listening
without judging, repeating what you understand,
confirming meanings, giving suggestions, and
acknowledging a mutual or shared meaning.
Why is intercultural communication important?
It gives us insights on how to behave when
we meet people from different cultures, beliefs
and religions.
