The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

5. The Burj Khalifa was open on January 4th 2010
It’s the world’s tallest tower at the moment more over that the height is 828 Meters
The building is previously known as the Burj Dubai.
The tower consist of several special features such as most number of the elevators
and fastest as well 64km/hr, the highest outdoor observation desk.
It consist of 162 floors which is been cladded with 28,261glass panel outside the
tower, The concrete used for paving is 2,065 Km long .

Supplementary power supply 360000

6. Condensation
collection system.
This unique system was designed to irrigate the gardens and
water features surrounding the building. Condensation created
when the hot and humid air outside combines with the cooling
equipment throughout the building. Both the cooling equipment
and the condensation collected is monitored around the clock.
The resulting condensation is collected and drained into a
holding tank beneath the structure. This water is then pumped
into the irrigation system for use on the Burj Khalifa park.
An estimated 15 million gallons of water are collected in this
fashion every year, enough to fill twenty Olympic-sized swimming
pools.
7. Concrete Buttressed
Core
A concrete hexagonal core with an innovative system
of Y-shaped buttresses was utilized to give the
building a unique and stable “tripod like” stance.
The main safety advantage of this “three winged”
core design is that it gives the building torsional
resistance and reduces the vortex effect of high
winds.
A large reinforced concrete mat likewise supported
by bored reinforced concrete piles—each pile is 1.5
meters in diameter and 43 meters long—supports
the structural core of the building.
8. Glazing
The Structure is highly durable and capable so that the glazing
installed silicones are the unrivalled technology to provide
protection from Ultraviolet light, temperature and the weather
resistance so they are specially manufactured form the Zurich of
triple glazing which gives the maximum protection.
The high performance structural silicone sealants ensure lowest
possible gas loss rates from the glazing and these are
manufactured in European standards EN 1279.
9. Interiors
The interior of the wall is mainly based on the
Gypsum wall rather than the main walls in order to
reduce the whole building weight. The Thermal
insulation is done at such a way that between the
two boards in the cavity they have placed the rock
wool to protect the cold loss more over that the
screws are specially manufactured and all the
accessories are provide by the company with fully
furnished including all the sockets and points to
avoid the drilling further.
Good loft insulation is also provided with a rock
wool and false ceiling with central cooling system.
10. Earthquake
Resistance
The Burj Khalifa building has the capacity to
withstand earthquakes up to a 7.0 magnitude. This far
surpasses the 5.9 magnitude earthquake standard
that regulations require for tall buildings in Dubai.
In addition, a system of motion sensors located
throughout the building is designed to detect and
report unusual structural movement.
The Burj Khalifa has also recently joined with a
number of tall buildings in the area to adopt the
Online Alerting of Structural Integrity and Safety
(Oasis) earthquake detection system to help
determine when to evacuate highly populated areas
in an effort to reduce casualties.
11. The World’s Fastest
Elevators
Boasting an “Intelligent elevator installation” that is the highest in
any building to date, the Burj Dubai has a total of 57 elevators and
8 escalators. With an average capacity of 12-14 passengers per
cabin, the elevators are capable of travelling at 10 meters per
second, which makes them among the fastest in the world. The
elevators are located within the building’s central reinforced fire-
resistant concrete core.
12. The Burj fire safety system mainly
consist of 3 components
As the water is sprinkled the fire
gets extinguished and the high
power fans supplies fresh air by
pushing the smoke out
These are all tied in with the
aforementioned home
automation system featuring
smart multi-alarm smoke, heat
and optical sensors found in all
rooms throughout the building.
The Burj is also equipped with 38
fire and smoke resistant
evacuation lifts.
As an added safety precaution in
the event of a fire, sandstorm or
earthquake, a highly trained team
of emergency specialists will
remain onsite at the Burj building
24 hours a day, seven days a
week.
13. • Reinforced Stairways and Refuge Areas – In the aftermath of unthinkable events
such as the 2001 terrorist attacks that brought down the Twin Towers at the World
Trade Center, architects and engineers have had to rethink safety measures designed
to protect the occupants of extremely tall buildings.
• Among these special types of safety features found at the Burj Khalifa building are
stairways reinforced with fireproof concrete.
• Recognizing that it’s unreasonable for building occupants to walk down 160 flights of
steps in the event of a major emergency, specially constructed refuge areas are found
on roughly every 25 floors. (9 in total)
• Separated from the building’s main structure by a “two-hour fire-resistant
construction”, the refuge areas are air-conditioned and pressurized to mitigate the
migration of smoke. The refuge areas are designed on a “defend-in-place” strategy,
wherein occupants are isolated and protected from danger nearby, or allowed to
stop and catch their breath in a protected environment on the way down in the event
of a full building evacuation.
14. Environment Friendly
Water heating
The Burj utilizes solar power 378 panels each with an area of 2.7sq.m were installed. These panels have
the ability to heat 140,000 lit of water when supplied with just 7hrs of day light. This is equal to 32,000KW
of energy provided .
Air ventilation provided at the top reduces the energy consumption. Air at the top of the building is
cooler, has low density and relatively humid. Its ideal for ventilation. Less energy is required to maintain
the comfortable condition
15. • The Burj Khalifa team partnered with Honeywell Building HVAC
system.
• The OBS software as a service solution involves collating real-time
field data, pushing this data to the Honeywell Sentience IoT
Platform, identifying anomalies, and running smart algorithms for
predictive and prescriptive maintenance of the building’s
mechanical assets.
• This service has enabled Burj Khalifa’s maintenance team to
transform from a traditional planned and preventative
maintenance regime to a predictive maintenance program for
mechanical systems, which is also known as a Reliability Centered
Maintenance (RCM) approach.
• At the core of OBS is Honeywell Sentience, a cloud-based IoT
platform that delivers secure big data capabilities for all of
Honeywell’s connected solutions. The platform allows Burj Khalifa’s
facility managers to use building data analytics for predictive and
prescriptive maintenance.
• Honeywell highlighted that the pilot has resulted in a significant
reduction in preventative mechanical maintenance tasks and an
overall 40% reduction in total maintenance hours for mechanical
assets, while improving the availability to 99.95%, enabling a
significant reduction of unplanned reactive maintenance.
• Burj Khalifa also uses Honeywell’s EBI system, a technology that
provides a unified view of building systems and increases the
connectivity of smart devices to improve efficiency, increase
responsiveness and maximize operational control. With access to
real-time facility data, Burj Khalifa’s facility management team is
now able to detect incidents faster, respond more quickly and
mitigate any impact, more cost effectively
16. OCCUPANT SAFETY
To further ensure safety, the Burj is equipped with a sophisticated home
automation system. Featuring multi-alarm sensors in all rooms that are tied into
LCD displays located in refuge areas and residential units throughout the building,
the automated system can monitor and display emergency information to all
occupants if needed. In addition, an Arabic/English voice alarm communications
system is in place to alert all building occupants of emergency events.
Technology enhances comfort of Burj building occupants
In addition to the security management solution, Johnson Controls installed low-
voltage systems that enable many of the high-end amenities enjoyed by tenants
and residents. The nearly 900 residences of the Burj feature E-Home, a smart home
technology installed by Johnson Controls. Each residence is equipped with a single
control system that interfaces with lighting, curtains, HVAC, home theater and
security management. Similar controls are installed in the hotel’s 324 guest rooms.
17. If an unauthorized person accesses a secure area, the building sub-systems,
including cameras and intercoms, are immediately activated. If a fire is detected,
the airflow system will automatically deactivate to confine or smother a fire.
Audio/visual systems, including project screens and video displays, and
conferencing systems are installed throughout the tower.
A two-way radio system allows facility and hotel management to communicate
with maintenance and security personnel throughout the building.

CAR SEARCHING
SYSTEM
Starting with the intelligent parking application, after an employee books a meeting
room and inputs visitor information (license plate number, cell phone or e-mail
address), the system will automatically send a confirmation message, including a
building photograph and route map to the visitor.
The car license plate number will be sent to the car park’s recognition system to
allow it to identify and permit the visitor’s vehicle to enter.
Meanwhile, digital signs, integrated with the car park’s lights, will lead the visitor to
their assigned parking space.
Arrival information will be synchronously sent to employees so they can prepare to
greet their guest.
In addition to the car park entrance, the license plate recognition system is also
placed in front of the digital signs and at the parking spaces. The former is used to
check the vehicle identification in order to correctly display the direction information;
the latter helps the system rearrange empty parking spaces if the driver parks in the
wrong place.
These intelligent parking systems also implement energy efficient air quality
monitoring by installing many sensors and tying them in with the control program to
schedule the lighting and air extraction system. For example, vehicles come and go
frequently during rush hour; so at these times, the lighting will be kept on instead of
repeatedly switching on and off with each vehicle. Once rush hour is over the system
will return to normal operation and use sensors to detect cars entering and leaving
the lot, and provide enough light to illuminate the road ahead. This saves a lot of
energy as well as optimizing parking management.
