 Pop art is an art movement that emerged in the 1950s
and flourished in 1960s in America and Britain
 Different cultures and countries contributed to the
movement through the 1960s/70s.
 Peaked in 1960s
 Artists felt that what they were taught at art school
didn’t have anything to do with them
 They used Sources such as Hollywood movies,
advertising, product packaging, pop music and comic
books for their imagery
 Early Pop art in Britain was fuelled by American pop
culture viewed from a distance.
 In The USA pop style was a return to representational
art( art that depicted the visual world in a recognisable
way)
 In Britain, the movement was more academic in its
approach. While employing irony and parody, it focused
more on what American popular imagery represented,
and its power in manipulating peoples lives.

Keith Haring:
• An American artist whose pop art emerged from the
new York city graffiti subculture of the 1980s.
• His animated imagery has “become a widely recognised
visual language”
• During his lifetime, Haring had over 50 solo exhibitions,
and was represented by well-known galleries such as
the Tony Shafrazi Gallery and the Leo Castelli Gallery.
• Harings work is in major private and public collections,
including the museum of modern art and the Morgan
library and museum.
• TOWER is a mural executed in 1987. The mural covers
the exterior of a preserved stairwell from the now
demolished building of the Necker-Enfants Malades
Hospital. It is one of two public Murals In France by
Haring.
• Harings art was “influential in future art”, including
the change for life campaign that started in 2009
• “Haring symbolizes the emptiness with all of us”
