CERTA L2 Developing Study Skills
Task 1 - Research
2.4
Task 1 – Research – Web source
• American Pop Art: American Pop Art did not truly come of age until
the early 1960’s and in fact it was not called “Pop Art” until this time.
Early exhibitions of American Pop Art took place in the late 1950’s in
New York. Andy Warhol had his first exhibition in Los Angeles, where
he sold his famous soup can painting.
• American Pop Art was product of the incessant marketing Americans
tended to be subjected to, and in order to differentiate from this
more complex, even artistic mass media, the subject matter and tone
tended to be more serious and dramatic.

Task 1 – Research – Web source
Why did Pop Art emerge in the US?
A post- WWII boom in the economy led to higher salaries and more
leisure times, this led to the mass- production of objects such as
televisions, dishwashers and cars on a unprecedented scale. This led to
the rise to the advertisement industry which plagued the American
society with constant and consistent advertising. Most Americans grew
sick of this lifestyle and rebelled against what they saw as a“pre-fab
lifestyle” and challenged the political establishment through protesting
the Vietnam War, for example. This “spirit of rebellion” found its way
into the art world, artists turned to sources such as pop music, product
packaging, comic booksand Hollywood movies.

Task 1 – Research – Book source
Andy gave the impression and aura of not being from this world when
he appeared in public, his life was described as “constantly spoken
about” and no-body’s life was written or gossiped about than Andy
Warhol. Andy was seen as the man who transformed how people saw
art by using the style of Pop Art, he was seen and known for being the
first modern time, world known artist and was seen as a pop-star for
the art world. Andy Warhol started by being a commercial artist to
being a celebrated Pop Artist. He wanted to be recognised as a “pure”
artist whose pictures would stand as a momentum to himself and
would increase or even exceed the value of goods he portrayed.

British style developed academically, American style developed from
American youth not relating to art in galleries and turning towards art
in advertisements and designs. Roy Lichtenstien was a founding father
of Pop Art, sketching a portrait of George Washington in 1962. He drew
comic inspired works including his signature black lines, dots and comic
book speech bubbles, creating scenarios often including the character
‘Brad.’ In early paintings, the balloon texts contained strange messages.
Another painting, Mr Bellamy (1961) is an inside joke.

Task 2b – Action Plan/Schedule
3.1
• Add notes here on how you stuck to your plan/had to change your
plan and why
• I spent more time on making the separate posters than planned as it
took longer than expected, giving me less time to make the fina
poster.
• Apart from that, I followed the schedule
Task 2c – Planning
• Use these slides to show your planning of your products, think about
structure and the components for each product [evidence for this
may include storyboards, flat plans, sketches, etc]
• Poster layout:
3.2

Character
Name
Time and date of exhibit

Task 5 – Evaluation – Problem Solving
• Describe three problems you faced in your project and how you
solved these
• 1 Not knowing how to use photoshop – looked up tutorials
• 2 Photoshop crashed – use recovery file, recreate what I had done
• 3 Partner wasn’t here third day, planning wasn’t complete so posters
differentiate and aren’t cohesive – changed the plan to ‘characters’
instead of specific characters
3.3
Task 5 – Evaluation – Working with others
• Choose three aspects of your production where you worked well with
your team and this benefited the project
• 1 Research – websites – each used different websites to maximise
information
• 2 Research – shared information found to help each other
• 3 Research – books- each used a different book to learn more
information about different types of pop art
1.2b
Task 5 – Evaluation - Feedback
• Discuss the feedback you received from your tutor during the project
and how you used this to improve the project
• To assemble all the posters and to add text at the bottom of the
poster to provide information on where the exhibit is being held
3.5
Task 5 – Evaluation – Active Engagement
• Define active engagement in your studies and briefly explain how you
used it in this project
• Active engagement is participating in class work instead of just sitting
back and listening. I did this by completing my poster and doing
research to help me with my final product.
1.2a
Task 5 – Evaluation
Accessing and storing information
• Explain where the books/resources are for your area in the LC
• 2F, media section
• Explain how to take a book/resource out of the LC
• Take the book to the front desk and check it out using your ID
2.1
Task 5 – Evaluation
Accessing and storing information
• Explain where to store electronic information on the college network
• Use the one drive to access it anywhere
• Explain where you upload work when it is completed
• To my blogspot so the teacher can see it
2.1
Task 6 - How do you learn best?
• Explain some of the ways you think you learn best [refer to the VAK
questionnaire results in tutorial]:
• Kinaesthetic- active learning. I think I learn best by actively
participating in class activities and doing the work instead of just
reading/hearing about the work. This includes going places and
answering questions, rather than just learning by hearing about
questions.
1.1
Task 6 - How do you learn best?
• What makes it hard for you to study?
• Distractions, procrastination, lack of motivation
• What strategies do you think would benefit your studies?
• Becoming motivated, turning of electronics to avoid distractions,
getting stuff done as soon as I get home or during free periods s I
don’t get behind work.
