Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol was a successful magazine and ad illustrator.
In his early career he was dedicated to commercial and advertising art. His first commission
was to draw shoes for Glamour magazine in the late 1940s. He worked as a designer for a
shoe manufacturer where he developed the “blotted line” technique. This was when he
applied ink to paper and blotted it while it was still wet like the printmaking process.
In 1952 he had his first solo show at the Hugo gallery in New York, but it was not well
received. However, by 1956 he was invited to his first group exhibition at the Museum of
Modern Art in New York.
1962 was the year the Campbell’s soup can was first shown in a museum.

Why Warhol was popular
Warhol was the most successful and highly paid
commercial illustrator in New York even before he
started to make art for galleries. His screen-printed
images of Marilyn Monroe, soup cans and newspaper
stories quickly became synonymous with pop art. He
was the first artist to become famous in his lifetime

POP ART IN BRITAIN
IN 1955 A GROUP OF ARTISTS, ARCHITECTS AND DESIGN HISTORIANS MET REGUARLY TO
DISCUSS DISPARATE TOPICS SUCH AS CAR STYLING OR PULP MAGAZINE
THE GROUP THEY CALLED 'THE INEPENDENT GROUP' WERE COMMITED TO DEVELOPING A
BROAD BASED UNERSTANDING OF CULTURE FRO ITS HIGH FORMS TO ITS POPULAR ONES.
EDUARDO PAOLOZZI ( a member of the independent group) had
strong sculptural interests and his brutalist bronze cast pieces had connections with the
ravaged figuration of the likes of Jean Dubuffet.

HISTORY OF POP ART
IT EMERGED IN THE 1950S AND WENT ONTO FLOURISH IN THE 1960S IN
BOTH AMERICA AND BRITAIN.
IT DREW INSPIRATION FROMM SOURCES IN POPULAR AND COMMERCIAL
CULTURE.
THEY BELIEVED THEIR WORK WOULD END UP IN MUSEUMS BUT AS WELL AS
BEING IN MUSEUMS IT WAS INTERGRATED INTO THINGS SUCH AS
HOLLYWOOD MOVIES.
12. Task 4 – Evaluation – Production
Describe three strengths of your final pieces.
1 I managed to create a pop art piece using photoshop of a Hollywood celebrity so
that it was linked in with pop culture. It helped me get a basic understanding of
photoshop and turned out as well as I hoped
2 getting to use a good quality image. I tried several different Hollywood
celebrities where it became difficult to use because of two reasons. Reason 1 was
the image quality was pixelated making the lines bury which didn’t allow the full
effect of pop art. Reason two was the different concentrated within the image. I
managed in the end to pick a photo with a range off concentrations of the
different shades in the image.
3 keeping to the requirements and limitations. I was asked to include
dates/times, a location and a title which is all included within the piece. I also
magaed to not go past the limitations which was a one-word title (BUBBLE), only
use caplocks or lowercase (not both), and to only use sans serif fonts.
13. Task 4 – Evaluation – Production
Describe three areas for improvement in your final pieces.
1 the colouring within the pop art. The colouring is patchy is areas and goes
over the black areas and if I wanted to improve it, it would have been down
to time management. The colouring within the hair is messy and the colour
itself needs to be more evenly contributed.
2 filling the page more. I didn’t get to achieve everything that I wanted to
including putting some of Andy Warhol work on my poster and getting to
include some artist names that would be in the expedition. This would
have filled any empty gaps within the poster.
3 changing to background so it's not just a block colour. I saw some inspiration
on Pinterest which included backgrounds that also used the dots, or I wanted
to experiment with using collage pop art as I did my research on peter Blake.
14. Task 4 – Evaluation – Problem Solving
Describe three problems you faced in your project and how you solved these
1. photoshop. I had little to no experience using photoshop so doing what I
wanted to do in my plan was difficult to understand and get started. I solve
my problem by uses YouTube tutorials of how to use photoshop and how to do
pop art on photoshop
2 getting good quality images so that the pop art can be used at its best of it
ability. The photos used on the school's mac were bad quality and were very
difficult to get the result I wanted so I used photoshop at home and managed
to get good quality images with the right concentration shades within the
image.
15. Task 4 – Evaluation – Working with others
Choose three aspects of your production where you worked well with your
team and this benefited the project
1 we were given roles which helps us know what we wanted to do and what
we needed to do. Two people were given artist as the other person was given
research about pop art in general and its history. This benefited us as the
research was done in sections and done more efficiently as well as less time
consuming which allowed us to all experiment with photoshop
2 communicated on what our posters were going to look like. This allowed us
for our posters to come out looking similar but with our personal aspects
added to our individual posters
16. Task 4 – Evaluation - Feedback
Feedback is if I change to background colour to a brighter shade of red, it
would be closer to the pop art culture and also managing my time so I’m able
to achieve everything in my planning. Finally I was also asked to make sure all
my fonts on the text is the same.
