Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Â
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

3. Task 1 â Research â Web source
⢠American Pop Art: American Pop Art did not truly come of age until the early 1960âs and in fact it was not
called âPop Artâ until this time. Early exhibitions of American Pop Art took place in the late 1950âs in New
York. Andy Warhol had his first exhibition in Los Angeles, where he sold his famous soup can painting.
⢠American Pop Art was product of the incessant marketing Americans tended to be subjected to, and in order
to differentiate from this more complex, even artistic mass media, the subject matter and tone tended to be
more serious and dramatic.

4. Task 1 â Research â Web source
Why did Pop Art emerge in the US?
A post- WWII boom in the economy led to higher salaries and more leisure times, this led to the mass-
production of objects such as televisions, dishwashers and cars on a unprecedented scale. This led to the rise
to the advertisement industry which plagued the American society with constant and consistent advertising.
Most Americans grew sick of this lifestyle and rebelled against what they saw as a
âpre-fab lifestyleâ and challenged the political establishment through protesting
the Vietnam War, for example. This âspirit of rebellionâ found its way into the art
world, artists turned to sources such as pop music, product packaging, comic books
and HollyWood movies.

5. Task 1 â Research â Book source
Andy gave the impression and aura of not being from this world when he appeared in public, his life was
described as âconstantly spoken aboutâ and no-bodyâs life was written or gossiped about than Andy Warhol.
Andy was seen as the man who transformed how people saw art
by using the style of Pop Art, he was seen and known for being
the first modern time, world known artist and was seen as a
pop-star for the art world. Andy Warhol started by being a
commercial artist to being a celebrated Pop Artist. He wanted to
be recognised as a âpureâ artist whose pictures would stand as a
momentum to himself and would increase or even exceed the
Value of goods he portrayed.

6. Task 1 â Research â Book source
British style developed academically, American style developed from American youth not relating to art in
galleries and turning towards art in advertisements and designs.
Roy Lichtenstien was a founding father of Pop Art, sketching a portrait of George Washington in 1962.
He drew comic inspired works including his signature black lines, dots and comic book speech bubbles, creating
scenarios often including the absolute legendary character âBrad.â
In early paintings, the balloon texts contained strange messages. Another painting, Mr Bellamy (1961) is an
inside joke.

7. Task 2a â Idea Generation [individual]
Collage of Pop Art, including
works from Andy Warhol and
lichenstien, my individual design
would be copying the design of
the collage of JFK that Andy
Warhol did (Left Hand Side) but
instead it will be revolving around
the game by Bethesda, Elder
Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Title: Draconis.
8. Task 2a â Idea Generation [group]
⢠Collage of artworks including How To Train your Dragon designs as the common denominator. Include Brad
designs. With design inspiration from Andy warhol and Roy Litchenstien.
⢠Title: Draconis.
9. Task 2b â Action Plan/Schedule
Session Activity Who is responsible
1: Researched Pop Culture artist Andy Warhol and
used web sources to find information.
Oliver.
2 Used book sources found in the York College library
to research more on Andy Warhol and Lichenstien.
Oliver.
3 Looked at Pop Art online to create a small collage of
Andy Warhol and Lichenstiens work which I liked
the most.
Oliver.
4 The group discussed the theme of the idea we had
for the poster and decided on the main theme
being dragons, we settled with the idea of our
piece being How To Train Your Dragon.
Oliver.
3.1
10. Task 2c â Planning
3.2
These pictures, which I found off the
internet, are of dragons from the
game: Elder scrolls V: Skyrim. These
pictures are going to be in my collage
and be put into the Pop- Art style.
11. Task 4 â Production/Final Products
3.2
3.4
Here is the final product of my Pop-Art
collage. I used all the pictures from my
plan and gave them a Pop- Art look by
using Photoshop. I used colours that
contrast each other and ones that
work well together, I used bolder
colours in my final piece compared to
the colours in the individual idea
generation and compared to the
original pictures as I wasnât a fan of
some of the colourless space left in the
them, this also explains why all of the
background is covered by colour which
are polar opposites from each other.
12. Task 5 â Evaluation â Problem Solving
⢠Describe three problems you faced in your project and how you solved
these
⢠1: I didnât know how to use Photoshop and had to Google how to use it and
create the pictures in the way of Pop- Art.
⢠2: Another problem was outlining the dragons in Photoshop as they
blended in with the background they were on in Photoshop so I had to
manually go through every picture and erase all of the background that
was left when using the automatic eraser in Photoshop.
⢠3: My final problem was filling all the blank space in my poster which I filled
with contrasting colours to make the whole poster more aesthetically
pleasing and more interesting to look at.
3.3
13. Task 5 â Evaluation â Working with others
⢠Choose three aspects of your production where you worked well with your
team and this benefited the project
⢠1: We worked well in the Photoshop department when we all figured out
how to use it and helped each other.
⢠2: In the placing aspect of the poster, we all had roughly the same idea and
this made the process a lot easier to do compared to if we all had different
creative ideas.
⢠3: Everyone had really good communication skills and this made discussing
ideas easy to do and easily put everyone on the right page and give each
other the same ideas which again, made the whole process a lot easier to
do.
1.2b
14. Task 5 â Evaluation - Feedback
⢠Discuss the feedback you received from your tutor during the project
and how you used this to improve the project.
⢠My tutor gave me feedback on my Photoshop and said if I searched
up different methods to make my final poster look even better, I took
this advice and changed my method of editing photos, this helped
make my poster look more aesthetically pleasing.
3.5
15. Task 5 â Evaluation â Active Engagement
⢠Define active engagement in your studies and briefly explain how you
used it in this project.
⢠Active engagement: Active engagement refers to the joint functioning
of motivation, conceptual knowledge, cognitive strategies and social
interactions in literacy activities.
⢠In my studies I was in charge of what the project was about as I had
full creative control. This made the project a lot easier to complete as
I didnât have restrictive guidelines that I had to follow and was
allowed full creative control.
1.2a
16. Task 5 â Evaluation
Accessing and storing information
⢠Explain where the books/resources are for your area in the LC.
⢠The books were on the 2nd floor in the LC, in the creative section.
⢠The web sources were found on Google when searching for
Lichenstein and Andy Warhol.
⢠Explain how to take a book/resource out of the LC.
⢠Take your desired book to the reception in the LC and request to take
it out, they will scan it and your ID card and you will be given a
deadline to hand the resource back in.
2.1
17. Task 5 â Evaluation
Accessing and storing information
⢠Explain where to store electronic information on the college network.
⢠Store your electronic information in your documents whilst on your
personal login.
⢠Explain where you upload work when it is completed.
⢠When work is completed upload it to your personal blogger.
2.1
18. Task 6 - How do you learn best?
⢠Explain some of the ways you think you learn best [refer to the VAK
questionnaire results in tutorial]: I believe I learn best when I am able
to research all the information myself and when I have full control
and freedom to research in anyway I can.
1.1
19. Task 6 - How do you learn best?
⢠What makes it hard for you to study?
⢠My motivation is low and I find it hard to study because it is a mental
block.
⢠What strategies do you think would benefit your studies?
⢠Forcing myself to get on with the work I believe would benefit my
studies.
