CERTA L2 Developing Study Skills
Task 1 - Research
2.4
Firstly we were given 3 art movements to
choose to base our poster on. This is my
research on Op Art, De stijl, and Pop Art. We
later as a group chose to base the poster on
Pop Art, narrowing down to American Pop
Art, specifically artist Andy Warhol’s work.
Task 1 – Research – Web source
• Emerging in the mid 1950s in Britain and the late 1950s in America, Pop Art reached its peak in
the 1960s.
• Rebelled against dominant and traditional approaches to art and culture
• Inspiration came from sources such as Hollywood movies, advertising, product packaging, pop
music and comic books for their imagery.
• In 1957, pop artist Richard Hamilton listed the ‘Characteristics of Pop Art’, which read as follows:
“Pop Art is: Popular (designed for a mass audience), Transient (short-term solution), Expendable
(easily forgotten), Low cost, Mass produced, Young (aimed at youth), Witty, Sexy, Gimmicky,
Glamorous, Big business…”
• Pop art took art into new areas of subject matter and developed new ways of presenting it in art.
Pop art can be seen as one of the first embodiments of postmodernism.

American Pop Vs. British Pop
• British pop is often seen as distinctive from American pop
although they were inspired by similar subjects.
• In the Us, pop style depicted the visual world in a recognisable
way and used hard edges and distinctive shapes to move away
from abstract expressionism.
• In Britain, the movement was more academic in its approach.
While employing irony and parody, it focused more on what
American pop imagery represented, and its power in
manipulating people’s lifestyles.
• A very credible and inspiring pop artist is American artist, Andy
Warhol.
• American artists
were inspired by
what they saw and
the society that they
lived in, and their
experiences living
within that culture.
• Early pop in Britain
was fuelled by
American pop
culture viewed from
a distance and so
there is a clear
difference between
the pieces.

Task 1 – Research – Summary of Pop Art
2.2
2.3
Weblink: https://www.theartstory.org/movement/pop-art/
Task 1 – Research – Book source
• We chose to do Andy Warhol as the focus artist as he is the most
well-known and iconic pop artist. This book includes a photo of his
work and information about him as an artist.
• “It was fabulous: an art opening with no art” – Andy Warhol,
describing his Campbell’s Soup can artwork, 1968.
Book title: Pop Art Author: Tilman Osterwold Library location: 2nd Floor Library

2.3
Task 1 – Research – Book source
• This book contains numerous
examples of Andy Warhol’s work.
We chose to study Andy Warhol
because he is the most
influential and well-known pop
artist.

2.3
Book title/Author + Library location: Series and Singles by Andy Warhol, 709.2 WAR (2nd Floor Library)
Task 2a – Idea Generation [individual]
• I decided to use Pop Art
typography for the title to tie in
with the overall theme. This will
be the group’s non digital element
of the project. I also decided to
put this against a Pop Art
background so they fit together
and, in a way, create my own pop
art, as it was based on
advertisement in the beginning.
Task 2a – Idea Generation [group]
• Together as a group, we are sharing the theme of Pop Art and have all
done individual research on the theme in order to put those ideas
together and create individual pieces to all tie together into one
category. The subject that ties the pieces together is the focus on
American Pop Artist Andy Warhol, hence the name of the exhibition
Warhol.
Task 2b – Action Plan/Schedule
Session Activity Who is responsibile
1 Research (Books) Olivia
2 Research (Books) Harry
3 Research (Online) Gabby
4 Research (Online) Maddy
5 Title (Non Digital) Gabby
3.1
Task 2b – Action Plan/Schedule
3.1
• We stuck to this action plan as we had half of the team on
researching online and the other half researching in books. This made
it more efficient as we always had a team mate to help us if we got
stuck.
• I drew out the title that everyone used in their poster, which helped
because we then all had our non digital element and also helped
make our posters seem similar even though we were creating
individual pieces of work.
Task 2c – Planning
• We decided to use the Pop Art font in the title as it links to the theme
of the Pop Art era. I decided to use a cartoon character in the style of
Pop art to hold the poster, so it looks a bit more gimmicky, as Warhol
described it.
3.2
Task 2c – Planning
3.2
I decided to look at some different
backgrounds I could use to set the
theme of Pop Art, and resulted in these
ideas:
I ended up deciding that this background
suits best, as I thought it would be great for
the poster to look like a Pop Art character
was holding it.
Task 4 – Production/Final Products
3.2
3.4
See You There!
Task 5 – Evaluation – Problem Solving
• Describe three problems you faced in your project and how you
solved these
• 1
• One of our group members didn’t show up so I had to do online research myself. This was a bit slower but I
was able to provide the group with enough information.
• 2
• We had trouble finding book resources, but we shared with another team that were doing the same art
movement as us.
• 3
• Trouble with the computers and Photoshop, but we were able to combat this by learning how to work
Photoshop through the internet.
3.3
Task 5 – Evaluation – Working with others
• Choose three aspects of your production where you worked well with
your team and this benefited the project
• 1
• Making the title: we worked closely in order for me to draw the title as we all wanted it.
• 2
• Research: we all did our individual research and put the information together to make our time useful and
efficient.
• 3
• Helping to design each other’s posters: we all had input in each other’s posters to make them as creative as
possible.
1.2b
Task 5 – Evaluation - Feedback
• Discuss the feedback you received from your tutor during the project
and how you used this to improve the project
3.5
Task 5 – Evaluation – Active Engagement
• Active Engagement is the process of involving all students in activities
that encourage them to develop a deeper understanding of content
by working with and reflecting upon the material being presented.
• We showed active engagement by working together on all aspects of
the project to be able to understand the entirety of the project.
1.2a
Task 5 – Evaluation
Accessing and storing information
• Explain where the books/resources are for your area in the LC
• You find the books in the art section, and the area codes are on the
side of the book.
• The other resources were found on the internet using the macs.
• Explain how to take a book/resource out of the LC
• Give it to someone who works in the library. They will scan it and tell
you the latest date to bring it back.
2.1
Task 5 – Evaluation
Accessing and storing information
• Explain where to store electronic information on the college network
• On the OneDrive. There is a OneDrive option when you are saving
your work so you can save it on your own personal account on the
college computers, accessible from any college computer.
• Explain where you upload work when it is completed
• If it’s a powerpoint or word document, upload it to SlideShare then
copy and paste the link onto the HTML side of your new blog in
Blogger. Otherwise just paste it onto your new blog in Blogger.
2.1
Task 6 - How do you learn best?
• Explain some of the ways you think you learn best [refer to the VAK
questionnaire results in tutorial]:
• I am a Kinesthetic learner, therefore I learn best by doing things and
being very hands on. I learn best by someone showing me how to do
it, then allowing me to give it a go.
1.1
Task 6 - How do you learn best?
• What makes it hard for you to study?
• Other people around me
• Silence
• Infrequent breaks
• What strategies do you think would benefit your studies?
• Music
• Frequent breaks

  • 2. Task 1 - Research 2.4 Firstly we were given 3 art movements to choose to base our poster on. This is my research on Op Art, De stijl, and Pop Art. We later as a group chose to base the poster on Pop Art, narrowing down to American Pop Art, specifically artist Andy Warhol’s work.
  • 3. Task 1 – Research – Web source • Emerging in the mid 1950s in Britain and the late 1950s in America, Pop Art reached its peak in the 1960s. • Rebelled against dominant and traditional approaches to art and culture • Inspiration came from sources such as Hollywood movies, advertising, product packaging, pop music and comic books for their imagery. • In 1957, pop artist Richard Hamilton listed the ‘Characteristics of Pop Art’, which read as follows: “Pop Art is: Popular (designed for a mass audience), Transient (short-term solution), Expendable (easily forgotten), Low cost, Mass produced, Young (aimed at youth), Witty, Sexy, Gimmicky, Glamorous, Big business…” • Pop art took art into new areas of subject matter and developed new ways of presenting it in art. Pop art can be seen as one of the first embodiments of postmodernism. Title/Weblink/Date accessed: https://www.tate.org.uk/art/art-terms/p/pop-art 2.2 2.3
  • 4. American Pop Vs. British Pop • British pop is often seen as distinctive from American pop although they were inspired by similar subjects. • In the Us, pop style depicted the visual world in a recognisable way and used hard edges and distinctive shapes to move away from abstract expressionism. • In Britain, the movement was more academic in its approach. While employing irony and parody, it focused more on what American pop imagery represented, and its power in manipulating people’s lifestyles. • A very credible and inspiring pop artist is American artist, Andy Warhol. • American artists were inspired by what they saw and the society that they lived in, and their experiences living within that culture. • Early pop in Britain was fuelled by American pop culture viewed from a distance and so there is a clear difference between the pieces. • 5. Task 1 – Research – Summary of Pop Art 2.2 2.3 Weblink: https://www.theartstory.org/movement/pop-art/
  • 6. Task 1 – Research – Book source • We chose to do Andy Warhol as the focus artist as he is the most well-known and iconic pop artist. This book includes a photo of his work and information about him as an artist. • “It was fabulous: an art opening with no art” – Andy Warhol, describing his Campbell’s Soup can artwork, 1968. Book title: Pop Art Author: Tilman Osterwold Library location: 2nd Floor Library 2.2 2.3
  • 7. Task 1 – Research – Book source • This book contains numerous examples of Andy Warhol’s work. We chose to study Andy Warhol because he is the most influential and well-known pop artist. 2.2 2.3 Book title/Author + Library location: Series and Singles by Andy Warhol, 709.2 WAR (2nd Floor Library)
  • 8. Task 2a – Idea Generation [individual] • I decided to use Pop Art typography for the title to tie in with the overall theme. This will be the group’s non digital element of the project. I also decided to put this against a Pop Art background so they fit together and, in a way, create my own pop art, as it was based on advertisement in the beginning.
  • 9. Task 2a – Idea Generation [group] • Together as a group, we are sharing the theme of Pop Art and have all done individual research on the theme in order to put those ideas together and create individual pieces to all tie together into one category. The subject that ties the pieces together is the focus on American Pop Artist Andy Warhol, hence the name of the exhibition Warhol.
  • 10. Task 2b – Action Plan/Schedule Session Activity Who is responsibile 1 Research (Books) Olivia 2 Research (Books) Harry 3 Research (Online) Gabby 4 Research (Online) Maddy 5 Title (Non Digital) Gabby 3.1
  • 11. Task 2b – Action Plan/Schedule 3.1 • We stuck to this action plan as we had half of the team on researching online and the other half researching in books. This made it more efficient as we always had a team mate to help us if we got stuck. • I drew out the title that everyone used in their poster, which helped because we then all had our non digital element and also helped make our posters seem similar even though we were creating individual pieces of work.
  • 12. Task 2c – Planning • We decided to use the Pop Art font in the title as it links to the theme of the Pop Art era. I decided to use a cartoon character in the style of Pop art to hold the poster, so it looks a bit more gimmicky, as Warhol described it. 3.2
  • 13. Task 2c – Planning 3.2 I decided to look at some different backgrounds I could use to set the theme of Pop Art, and resulted in these ideas: I ended up deciding that this background suits best, as I thought it would be great for the poster to look like a Pop Art character was holding it.
  • 14. Task 4 – Production/Final Products 3.2 3.4 See You There!
  • 15. Task 5 – Evaluation – Problem Solving • Describe three problems you faced in your project and how you solved these • 1 • One of our group members didn’t show up so I had to do online research myself. This was a bit slower but I was able to provide the group with enough information. • 2 • We had trouble finding book resources, but we shared with another team that were doing the same art movement as us. • 3 • Trouble with the computers and Photoshop, but we were able to combat this by learning how to work Photoshop through the internet. 3.3
  • 16. Task 5 – Evaluation – Working with others • Choose three aspects of your production where you worked well with your team and this benefited the project • 1 • Making the title: we worked closely in order for me to draw the title as we all wanted it. • 2 • Research: we all did our individual research and put the information together to make our time useful and efficient. • 3 • Helping to design each other’s posters: we all had input in each other’s posters to make them as creative as possible. 1.2b
  • 17. Task 5 – Evaluation - Feedback • Discuss the feedback you received from your tutor during the project and how you used this to improve the project 3.5
  • 18. Task 5 – Evaluation – Active Engagement • Active Engagement is the process of involving all students in activities that encourage them to develop a deeper understanding of content by working with and reflecting upon the material being presented. • We showed active engagement by working together on all aspects of the project to be able to understand the entirety of the project. 1.2a
  • 19. Task 5 – Evaluation Accessing and storing information • Explain where the books/resources are for your area in the LC • You find the books in the art section, and the area codes are on the side of the book. • The other resources were found on the internet using the macs. • Explain how to take a book/resource out of the LC • Give it to someone who works in the library. They will scan it and tell you the latest date to bring it back. 2.1
  • 20. Task 5 – Evaluation Accessing and storing information • Explain where to store electronic information on the college network • On the OneDrive. There is a OneDrive option when you are saving your work so you can save it on your own personal account on the college computers, accessible from any college computer. • Explain where you upload work when it is completed • If it’s a powerpoint or word document, upload it to SlideShare then copy and paste the link onto the HTML side of your new blog in Blogger. Otherwise just paste it onto your new blog in Blogger. 2.1
  • 21. Task 6 - How do you learn best? • Explain some of the ways you think you learn best [refer to the VAK questionnaire results in tutorial]: • I am a Kinesthetic learner, therefore I learn best by doing things and being very hands on. I learn best by someone showing me how to do it, then allowing me to give it a go. 1.1
  • 22. Task 6 - How do you learn best? • What makes it hard for you to study? • Other people around me • Silence • Infrequent breaks • What strategies do you think would benefit your studies? • Music • Frequent breaks 1.1
