 Pop art is a art movement that began to emerge in the
1950s and continued to flourish into the 1960s which was
its peak and was popular in America and Britain.
 It draws inspiration from sources within popular and
commercial culture, more varied cultures contributed to
the movement within the 1960s and 70s.
 Pop art began its emergence in the early 1950s in Britain
and late 50s in America , pop art reached its peak in the
60s , it was was a revolt against the dominant approaches
to art and culture. Younger artists turned to comics ,
Hollywood, movies, advertising , product packaging and
pop music for inspiration as they fell like what they saw
in museums and where taught art in school that has
nothing to do with the everyday life of the normal person.

Yoshitomo Nara:
• he is a Japanese artist and came forth during
japans pop art movement in the 1990s.
• His art and sculptures are simple as most works
from him contain innocuous subject matter, they
are often pastel-hued children and animals with
cartoonish lines. They usually have little to no
background.
• These children usually brandish knives and saws
even within their cute and even vulnerable looks.
However Nara dose not view these weapons as
aggressors in a quote he says “ I kind of see the
children among other, bigger, bad people all
around them, who are holding bigger knives..."
• "Look at them, they [the weapons] are so small,
like toys. Do you think they could fight with those?
• “Anything with human form will resemble someone
you know.”"

American vs British pop art
It first appeared in Britain in the early 1950s then the late 50s in
America and emerged to show opposition to the traditional approach to
art.

• A return to representational
art (art that depicted the visual
world in a recognisable way)
• It uses hard edges and distinct
forms after the painterly looseness
of abstract expressionism.
• Uses impersonal, mundane
imagery, in a way to move away
from the emphasis of personal
feelings and symbolism that
characterised abstract
expressionism.
• Had a more academic approach. It
employed irony and parody whilst it
focused on what American popular
imagery represented and its power in
manipulating peoples lifestyles.
• The 1950s art group “The independent
group”, is regarded as the precursor to
the British pop art movement.
