Socialytics: Accelerating IBM Connections Adoption with Watson AnalyticsFemke Goedhart
Session delivered at IBM Connect 2017 on Feb 21st 2017 by Femke Goedhart & Franz Walder - panagenda
Abstract: Social adoption is a challenge for many companies. What is the most effective utilization of the environment? Who is using which resources, what in the environment is dormant or orphaned? Where should efforts focus in order to improve adoption? All of these questions can be difficult to answer and there is no "one size fits all" solution as each organization has their own unique needs. Join Femke Goedhart and Franz Walder and learn how to tackle this topic using IBM Connections and Watson. Starting out with IBM Bluemix Data Connect to collect and combine data from relevant sources, they use the cognitive power of IBM Watson Analytics to answer those tricky questions and provide solutions to real-world adoption challenges.

Being an intranet manager can be demanding, and there isn't always someone else to learn from in your organisation. Based on 15 years as an intranet manager / consultant, I share some experiences of where things can go wrong, and how to avoid them:
* Disappearing Stakeholders
* Change comes from leadership not data
* Too much personalization
* When your intranet should look like your org chart
* Forgetting the late-adopters
* Over-zealous Governance
* trying to change everything at once

SharePoint dominates as an intranet and collaboration platform, but it seems increasingly challenged by more nimble, consumer-driven technologies. Microsoft too, seems to be putting the emphasis on Office 365. How should SharePoint evolve? How much should we be driven by employee expectations? And what should SharePoint teams be planning in response? In this keynote, Sam will consider:
• What are the trends in how people work and what they expect from their workplace tools?
• How useful is SharePoint as the basis for a digital workplace?
• How strong is the case for moving to Office 365?
• Is Microsoft’s roadmap enough to keep them in the lead?
• What are rival platforms doing that SharePoint misses?
Making sense of your Digital WorkplaceSam Marshall
One of the challenges of a modern intranet is that the boundaries are becoming blurred by the growth of social and collaboration tools, mobile access and cloud applications. In this evolving landscape, intranets remain highly important, but the roadmap needs to plan for the digital workplace as a whole. Based on hands-on experience of developing strategy, Sam Marshall shows how approaching this from an employee perspective can bring clarity and purpose, but also how the emphasis needs to be as much on management as on technology.

Driving the Digital Workplace with Office 365Bill Ryan
Organizations are moving to Microsoft Office 365 at unprecedented speed making the platform Microsoft’s most successful product in it’s history. Many organizations use Office 365 for Exchange but have little expertise in understanding how to utilize the collaboration features of the platform. Companies struggle to understand how to deploy and use SharePoint, Lync, and Yammer as these features often go unused:
- SharePoint is often used simply as a document store
- There is little focus on integrating the Office 365 components into a cohesive solution
- Organizations lack the knowledge in how to put it all together to drive the Digital Workplace

Session slides for my session delivered at SNOUG in Zurich on October 28 2015.
Abstract: Documents are still a backbone of our organisations. Sure, the ERP is often leading but look at how the majority of information is stored and you will find it is in the form of files & documents. Getting people to collaborate on information is crucial for the success and combined knowledge of any organisation and many are investing in platforms like IBM Connections to get this done.
But still, getting people to relinquish their personal file drives, can be daunting. So how do you get people to use the tools and options IBM Connections offers to collaborate on files & documents, what are the problems you can run in and how do you keep control over what's going on? In this session Femke will take you through the basics of Social document management, showing you how to use the different possibilities in IBM Connections to leverage social document/file management and take you through the questions and decisions any organisation using a social networking tool like IBM Connections should ask themselves about managing documents.
Because there is no one-size-fits-all solution and being able to explain the importance and difference between things like folders and tags, when to use CCM or community files and how to safely share files with people outside of your company can make all the difference!

ICON UK 2016: Modernizing an IBM Notes applicaton using with AngularJSMark Leusink
Slides from my ICON UK 2016 session. Session abstract:
Modernization of IBM Notes applications is a topic that is on the map for many IBM customers. With one of my customers, a Norwegian manufacturing company, we started a project last year to modernize a business critical Notes application. We decided early on to keep using Domino in the backend, but switch to AngularJS for the frontend. In the session I'll talk about how we approached the project and got to a working prototype. Topics I will cover include responsibilities, development workflow, technical setup and issues we ran into. I'll explain the architecture that we are using, the components involved and how we integrated with IBM Connections and Infor. Keywords for this session: AngularJS, Nginx, REST, IBM Domino, Connections, Infor M3 and Infor Document Management.
In the 3rd of 3 joint webinars with Beezy and CardioLog Analytics, we discussed the basics of gamification, and how you can develop a "motivation hacking" strategy within SharePoint or Office 365 to help shape user behavior and improve adoption and engagement.
Proven Strategies for increasing Adoption and EngagementChristian Buckley
While Office 365 continues to grow at a rapid rate, adoption can be slow and difficult without a strategy in place. This presentation covers a number of different topics that all have an impact on end user adoption and engagement. This presentation shares: a "go to market" strategy for a successful Office 365 deployment; productivity features that will enhance adoption; strategies for keeping end users engaged; how to track usage and activity so you can measure your success; and touches on many of the productivity features (Groups, Delve, Yammer, co-editing, etc). The primary focus, however, is on the management/ongoing educational aspects of a successful deployment.

7 principles of good intranet governanceMark Morrell
Recently I spoke at Intranatverk about some key governance principles that are common to successful intranets. Book cover - Digital success or digital disastersI took this subject from my book 'Digital success or digital disaster?' which a practical, experience-based approach to growing and managing a successful intranet.
The purpose of a governance framework is to ensure that you balance business needs with the user experience. An effective governance framework is essential for a well-managed intranet. It can be the deciding factor between a good user experience, greatly valued, and a poor user experience with little benefit. Every intranet is different depending on the size, type, and culture of the organisation it supports. However, there are some key governance principles that are common to their success.
Know your organisation
Define the scope
Put people first
Use all resources
Compare and benchmark
Do what you say you will do
Keep it legal
These principles for good governance are not like a menu that you choose which items to have and leave others alone. You need to follow all of these to build a strong foundation to improve your intranet and implement your strategy. Think about how you build a house with the foundations, walls, floors, windows, doors and finally the roof. It would not make sense for you to have windows, doors, and a roof only. The same applies to your governance framework.
7 principles of good intranet governanceIntranätverk
Presented by Mark Morrell at Intranätverk 2015: Gothenburg, 21 May.
The alternative to governance can be chaotic anarchy. Posing risks to security and intellectual productivity provides an awful experience for those who still use your intranet. Where governance can start to get confusing and difficult is in how it is applied. Mark Morrell will show you how applying these governance principles can be easy and have a good outcome:
1. Know your organisation
2. Define the scope
3. Put people first
4. Use all resources
5. Compare and benchmark
6. Do what you say you will do
7. Keep it legal

A successful HCL Connections platform requires engaged users. How can Guides support this in a medium-sized company with highly-qualified and motivated employees and lean structures? When you have multiple divisions, product groups and locations spanning three continents and multiple languages and cultures, it's a challenge. HCL Connections was introduced into the Heitkamp & Thumann Group to support and improve collaboration. Guides (local super-users) are the main success factor that makes this possible and continuously improves it. Meet with the program managers and learn how they maintain, nurture, train and encourage this group of guides and what the challenges and successes are. Hear what lessons they have learned and what their vision is. Hopefully this will inspire you and maybe you can even become a part of it!

Soccnx10 Man versus Machine – A Story About Embracing Innovation Femke Goedhart
Presentation as given on June 7th in Toronto by Francie Tanner & Femke Goedhart:
Technology and innovation impacts every industry, line of business and profession in ways we could not imagine even 50 years ago. While IT is meant to make things more efficient, the pace of IT evolution makes it hard to think of the future as being “easier”. History shows that companies which are unable to innovate are driven out of the market, which leaves adoption as a central key to dealing with that new social platform, CRM and other innovation. But how do you get people to embrace change? Some people claim that adoption is a purely human affair where it’s all about people, while others believe that adoption should be technology driven and enforced in an automated way. Join Femke Goedhart and Francie Tanner and learn all about adoption tools, methods and strategies that will help you make any new deployment a measurable success.

ICONUK 2015: Files, files everywhere! Do you know where your organisations do...Femke Goedhart
As delivered on Sept 21st in London at ICONUK
session abstract: The good old 'document' might not be sexy anymore, it is still often the work horse of the organization. Containing most of our business information and knowledge and often being the preferred way of distribution by users, customers and partners alike. Traditionally we used formal document management tools and the 'good old' file share for storing documents but with collaboration tools like teamrooms, discussion databases and Quickr, the rise of Enterprise social Networking tools like IBM Connections and the ease with which users can get external tools like OneDrive, Dropbox and many others, a lot of that has become muddled. I will take you through some of the scenario's of modern document management, talk about the struggles of migration and give you tools and insights that can help you device a strategy to keep both your users as well as auditors happy.
Zen and the art of requirements gathering, why getting to "In time, On budget...Femke Goedhart
Often forgotten or trivialized, good requirements gathering can make or brake your project. This session will give you techniques and tips on how to effectively get to the core of the requirements, identify ways of prioritizing them and explains some core concepts of Functional and Technical design elements. Based on years of experience gathering requirements (and working with them!) Femke & Tim will take you through some of the real life examples they've come across and a lot of do's & don'ts they have run into. Tying them into practice and theory that can help you get your projects off to a better start.
This session was presented on March 30th 2015 in Gent Belgium during the http://Engage.ug usergroup event by Tim Clark & Femke Goedhart
BP202: Beyond Theory: Trials and Tribulations in Becoming a Successful Social...Femke Goedhart
There are many theories and ideas around "how to become a social business" but what really does or doesn't work? We wanted to know, and instead of just going blindly with the theory, we did the opposite and interviewed 32 companies in various stages of their journey to becoming a social business. Not just asking them about the big wins, but also talking about the struggles and small successes that really made the difference for them. Taking these experiences and real life examples of companies the likes of Dutch Railways, DAF, Saxion, Forbo Eurocol and Bavaria, and aligning them to the various theoretically relevant concepts, we were able to come up with some interesting concepts. In this session, we will take you through these concepts and theories and, using the examples provided by the companies, show you how these can help you identify the successes and avoid the pitfalls in becoming a social business.
This session was presented by Femke Goedhart & Sasja Beerendonk at IBM ConnectED in Orlando, FL on Tuesday Jan 27th 2015
SharePoint functionality: To Build or to Buy? Let's ask Pareto!Femke Goedhart
SharePoint is the complete solution for collaboration, document management and sharing knowledge across our organisation, and even beyond. It will drive our business!" For the last ten years it was this that message IT-departments used to get budget-approval to implement the platform we all know and love (and yes, sometimes hate). The reality is though that lots of companies struggle to get beyond using it as an intranet or document file storage. What happened to our promise to cover not just the 'sharing' and 'storage' part but really enhance our business processes with specific functionality tailored to the collaborative working? Like HR who needs functionality to support annual reviews, quality control who wants to monitor key performance indicators or the support departments who want to gauge customer satisfaction? "No problem!", most IT departments standard Pavlov reaction to these request was: "we'll build it ...!" But that takes lots of time, money and can cause massive delays which often also begs the question: isn't there another way? Aren't we inventing the wheel when others surely have already done so?
In this session Femke Goedhart and André Krijnen will discuss the intricacies and challenges of deciding when to make a standard solution fit (non-standard) business requirements and when to build your own. Taking you from how to handle the familiar "but that won't fit OUR organization!" arguments to figuring out the pragmatic factors that are really important in taking such a decision. To show you how, we will take several real-life customer scenarios through a decision matrix based on the 80/20 principle of Vilfredo Pareto that can help you determine whether to go 'Build' or 'Buy and Extend'. It will give you handles and tips on how to guide a decision process that is often difficult and can touch nerves but that, in the long run, can help you really fulfill that initial goal: creating a true collaboration platform.

Taking the experiences of 32 companies, we've created a Social Business journey scenario that can help you identify the successes and avoid the pitfalls in becoming a social business.
Getting to the core, requirements gathering in the wildFemke Goedhart
Session slides as delivered on March 18th 2014 at Engage in Breda, The Netherlands by Sophie Lavignac-Le Madec & Femke Goedhart
Abstract: The basis of any good project is good requirements. Knowing what it is you are going to build / get determines whether your project will be a success or a flat out failure. In reality though the requirements phase is often trivialized or even forgotten. This session will give you tips & tricks as well as explain to you the basic techniques on how to effectively get to the core of the requirements, identify ways of prioritizing them and explain some core concepts of Functional and Technical design elements. Coming from a requirement gathering as well as development & customer point of view Femke & Sophie will take you through some of the real life examples they have come across and a lot of do's & don'ts they have seen (and despaired over)
Social sharing vs. organised structure. Must you select only one?Femke Goedhart
Session slides as delivered on March 18th 2014 at Engage in Breda, The Netherlands by Stuart McIntyre & Femke Goedhart
Abstract: So you have connections (or you are thinking about it) and you want to know what it can do for you in the sense of *socialy* managing files but you don't really know how that concept works or if it would work for your organization.
Tags or folders, share or private, community files or personal files, meta-data and document types? What does it mean and where do you start?
Stuart McIntyre and Femke Goedhart will take you through the ups and downs of social file management. When to use it, when not and what you need to know about file and document management to have the discussion if this should replace the department file share.
Coming from two different backgrounds - and often butting heads about this topic - Stuart & Femke will pitch the points and concepts that you need to think about with managing your documents in a social environment and show you examples on how and where to use IBM Connections to do so.

BLUG 2013: Social Document Management in IBM ConnectionsFemke Goedhart
Folksonomy versus Taxonomy, Social Document management in IBM Connections:
With the rise of social business and platforms like IBM Connections, many companies are re-evaluating their document strategies. Ideals of employee-driven sharing, tagging and folksonomies are desired, but is all documentation really suited for the freedom of ‘social’? Do some types require more structure, process and control? If so, how do you determine this and integrate it with your social ambitions? This session will cover the principles of document management and social file-sharing and explain how the newly announced IBM Connections Content Manager fit into that, what it means and what it will add to Connections.
BP303 Taxonomy versus Folksonomy: Document Management in a Social AgeFemke Goedhart
With the rise of social business and platforms like IBM Connections, many companies are re-evaluating their document strategies. Ideals of employee-driven sharing, tagging and folksonomies are desired, but is all documentation really suited for the freedom of social? Do some types require more structure, process and control? If so, how do you determine this and integrate it with your social ambitions? This session will cover the principles of document management and social file-sharing. You'll learn how concepts like versioning, meta-data, retention, record and lifecycle management are important to you. We'll show you how to identify key requirements for document management within your organization and teach you how to strategically plan your way forward.
Presentation giving during BLUG Conference at Antwerp 23 -3-2012
"Company regulation versus personal individuality, how do you get your employees to be responsible partners in a Social Business and how do you weigh freedom versus restriction? The whole Social Business idea is based on the idea of each individual having an intrinsic value to the organization that isn't necessarily linked to its role within the organization alone. This begs the question of how to tap this resource without losing control and how to implement and regulate the changes that are going to be needed. How much of this can you regulate (top-down) and how much do you allow to evolve (bottom-up)? Setting up predefined structures and communities (pushing) versus allowing users to instigate the community building, allowing free input and self-empowerment (pulling).
This session will highlight the difficulties and choices a company will face while making the transition into a Social Business and offer ideas and guidelines on how to do so."

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.
Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.

34. “Please print, sign and return before end of day”
Rules & Regulations for appropriate use of external communication systems
Web systems for social networking and electronic messaging--i.e., IBM Connections, Sametime, etc. --have become readily available to promote communication. The
following policy for the appropriate use of each external system applies. Failure to obey by these rules can lead to immediate dismissal or
serious reprimand. Personnel engaged in official activity who are either planning to use or actually using external systems must keep in mind these principles,
tailor their actions accordingly, and verify any and all related questions as they arise with the compliance officer.
Non-negotiable constraints (and implications)
1. Federal (FERPA) and state records laws prohibit communication of information related to a individuals personal record of any kind absent the individual’s;
consent in a manner that exposes such information to a third party.
Communication from a staff member to a customer, partner or vendor on an externally accessible system potentially exposes the communication to third parties
(external community members). If the communication does not include legally-protected information, no problem arises; if it includes legally protected
information, the use of the external facing system for communication purposes violates FERPA and state law, and subjects the person initiating the communication to
potentially severe sanctions including termination of employment.
2. Federal law and health information privacy statutes prohibit communication of information related to any individual's personal record
information in the same way FERPA protects privacy information.
The same precautions apply with regard to health information as to education records.
3. Federal and state law mandate that the organization must have the capability and capacity to capture, archive, discover, and produce on demand
copies of any official communications made by organizations personnel as part of assigned duties.
Communication done via an external system typically cannot meet these requirements because the external system currently does not provide archival and retrieval
capabilities to users or to the organization. Personnel is therefore bound to take adequate measures to store important information in the official record
systems. IBM Connections may be used as a secondary communication channel (where the primary channel supports capture and such) but must not used as the sole
or primary communication channel for official business.
4. State law prohibits communications about individual personnel evaluations or performance absent the employee's consent……..
35. Tips
• Determine the main rules & regulations -> Do you need to reinforce or are
they part of existing contract & regulations already?
• Communicate Guidelines!
• You are changing your org, allow for some room to discover best
practices
• Talk about responsibilities, not ‘consequences’
• Trust
• (But monitor)
38. Situation
• Org with about 750 users
• Lots of effort into communicating a new strategy of collaboration
• Emphasis on openness, knowledge sharing
• No instruction or explanation on which tools are provided for that or how
these can help them do that….
40. Tips
• Communicate the strategy but also the means
• Promote the tools you are envisioning for your collaboration
• Provide use cases that highlight how the tools can help
• Retire competing products
• Block competing tools?
42. Situation
• International org with about 400 users
• Bonus system introduced to drive usage of the new platform
• Lots of positive attention for ‘winners’
• Most ‘prolific’ user of the month gets a bonus
43. Mmm…. I can post that
• …. As a blog
• …. As a bookmark
• …. As an Activity Entry
Bingo!

44. “Tell me how you measure me and I will tell you how I will
behave. If you measure me in an illogical way… do not
complain about illogical behavior…”
Eli Goldratt
45. Tips
• Use gamification to promote good behavior but measure effect, not
‘actions’
• ‘Hard’ numbers alone don’t tell the whole story
• Be careful using physical incentives
• Respect that not everyone will be able to use it (sensitive information, etc)
• Think about what you really want to stimulate and communicate that
