Exploration Of Good And Evil In Rashomon
On one level Rashomon, by director Akira Kurosawa, is a classic whodunnit, a tale of rape, murder,
deceit and redemption. How was the samurai warrior killed and his wife violated in lonely woodlands
at a time of dissonance in medieval Japan? Suspects emerge and an inquisition is held. But why do all
players profess their guilt, rather than protest their innocence? Kurosawa has taken two stories (the
1950 film is loosely based on the works of writer Ryunosuke Akutagawa) and created a multifaceted
masterpiece peppered with shifts and contrasts. He delves into aggression and accountability to
explore the collective Japanese consciousness after World War Two. He considers the meaning of truth
and the judging of others. In doing so, Kurosawa ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kurosawa unsettles at the outset with rain and gloom, then employs a series of rapid cuts to draw his
viewer into the heart of the moral dilemma. His is a radical experimentation with narrative marked by
dislocation and incompleteness (Goodwin, page 114). Kurosawa himself wrote: These strange
impulses of the human heart would be exposed through the use of an elaborately fashioned play of
light and dark (Akira Kurosawa, Something Like an Autobiography, p 182). It would be a keynote for
the entire film (Akira Kurosawa, Interviews, edited by Bert Cardullo, p. 176). That keynote is struck
as the woodcutter recalls the crime. Flashbacks were an unconventional way of constructing a
storyline, and Kurosawa s create a complex intertextual relationship. The woodcutter strides into
thicket, through full light, dappled light and shade, in an evolving montage of surety, uncertainty and
disquiet. The scene plays with long shots, pans, close ups and takes in high angles and laterals. The
segment is still analysed today for its technical and visual brilliance (Martinez, p 31). The shooting
script for Rashomon was littered with directions to create a sense of motion, to pan, to dolly in and
out, notes cinema expert Donald Richie (The Films of Akira Kurosawa, Donald Richie, pages 77, 78).
It is here that Kurosawa and cameraman Kazuo Miyagawa break one of cinematography s taboos
shooting directly into the sun. With craft

Proteins And The Membrane
a) It is known that the majority of proteins exist outside the cell. This is because they are transported
via a biosynthetic secretory pathway which is known as the ER Golgi pathway 2. That is, they are
transported from the ER to the Golgi. From the Golgi, the protein(s) are then sent to their respective
locations which can be to the plasma membrane (lining the outside of a cell), secretory vesicles, or
lysosomes 2.
There are certain transport vesicles which exist on the ER exit sites which are are COPII coated2. The
synthesized proteins are first packed into these transport vesicles before being sent to the Golgi
apparatus 2. This process can also be selective 2. That is, it can happen with the help of some transport
signals which are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The vesicles from the medial Golgi containing the medial resident proteins then fuse with the
previously formed vis Golgi to form a new medial Golgi 2. This process then repeats in the trans
Golgi, forming a new trans Golgi 2. After this, the membrane proteins are finally processed by the
Golgi resident proteins 2. Then, the vesicle which contains the membrane proteins fuses with the
plasma membrane; its final destination 2.
It is suspected that the lumen of the trans Golgi network is responsible for grouping the proteins into
their respective transport vesicles which then carry them to their final destinations 2.
b) It has been found that many proteins are transported to their final destinations in certain
unconventional ways. That is, they do not depend on the ER Golgi pathway for
transportation/secretion because they lack the signal peptides 10.
The four different types of unconventional protein secretion can be categorized based on whether they
are non vesicular or vesicular 10.
(1) Type I and II are non vesicular pathways 10. Type I is said to include self sustained protein
translocation across plasma membrane , which means direct transportation of proteins from the
cytoplasm to the plasma membrane, and type II is described as ABC transport based secretion 10.
(2) Type III and IV are vesicular based pathways 10. Type III includes autophagy based secretion ,
while type IV is for proteins that

Cuban Economic Crisis
In Latin America, only 8 countries have unemployment insurance, the most economically and socially
developed. The purpose of this insurance is to keep part of the wages of workers during a recession or
economic cycle. But in Cuba, predominant unemployment is not cyclical, but structural or chronic (or
underemployment), so these programs would benefit only an exiguous minority of the workforce.

Violence, Foolishness, And Impulsiveness In The Knight s Tale
The Knight s Tale is one of many tales from the Canterbury Tales. This story sets in the city of Athens.
Which opens into the theme of violence, foolishness, impetuousness, and impulsiveness; initially
exceedingly emotional responses. One example is when two of our main characters, Palmon and
Arcite, both fall in love with Theseus s sister in law (Emelye). These two blood brothers, leave each
other after seeing Emelye out of the window of the tower. Which, I believe is a very impulsive
decision, for they have not got time to know who she is and her personality. Also, they act like mortal
enemies after just seeing her, so this thought process was completely impulsive and based on her
looks. And later, Arcite tries to get to know her better after he was released from his imprisonment
sentence by disguising himself, so he can take a job as a page in Emelye s chamber. I believe this
shows that he wants to know her, but also it shows he is not being honest with her, which shows he
was being impulsive and deceiving. He only learned about the little things that she liked, not her
personality. Emelye learned a little bit about Arcite after the little conversing they shared, so they
learned a little of each other s personality. This shows that the friendship was growing and not an
intimate relationship, like Arcite wanted. So the story goes on and both Palmon and Arcite have been
released from prison. And they happen to both decide to wander in the woods. Then they confront
each other, each claiming the right to Emelye. The next day, they were brutally hacking away at each
other. Honestly, I believe they are being impulsive and violent, they still barely knew Emelye
(especially Palmon), and they decide to go kill each other. Then here shows up Theseus, which a
loving and wise duke, but he can also be a little impulse when it comes to violence (which is fairly
normal for a duke in the 1390s). Theseus tries to be loving when he sees the two men fighting, but he
changes his mind when he found out it was Palmon and Arcite fighting. And that they were fighting
because they love Emelye. Then Theseus was about to respond by killing them, but his loving wife
and Emelye intervened, pleading for their lives. They pleaded

Shakespeare In Modern Society
Shakespeare relevance in modern society is a highly debated topic in modern classrooms. Many
students will argue that he is old and is to confusing, others will say he s boring. Then on the other
side of the argument students argue that he has shaped the modern english language and has changed
society for the better. Whilst others are undecided, listening to both sides of the argument and not
being able to decide. In this essay both sides will be discussed; talking about quoting shakespeare and
how much we use his words and phrases everyday, how the emotions in shakespeare s plays are still
relevant in modern society and audiences still react in the way the play intended and finally how social
norms have changed and it is no longer socially acceptable with it putting the wrong ideas into people
s heads.
Everyone quotes shakespeare or uses on of his works at least once everyday. Most people don t even
realize we are doing it. Most people probably think it s greek to me (a phrase created by shakespeare),
when really it is very common In between writing poems and plays shakespeare was creating new
words and phrases to fit his plays and other works. Shakespeare almost created a whole nother
language in his time creating round 1700 words. A study has shown that people quote shakespeare at
least four times everyday, which is pretty impressive for a guy that has been dead for 400 years.

Health Information Exchange Analysis
Health information exchange (HIE) delivers information when and where it is needed to provide
improvements in healthcare quality and efficiency. HIE requires essential coding standards throughout
health information management so that information can be accessed, merged, divided and/or shared
with other healthcare organizations. In order to reach interoperability; message, exchange, and
terminological standards are a few key attributes needed. HL7 v2, CDA and RxNorm aid in reaching
these standards to achieve HIE. Standards are important because it facilitates good representation of
data and interoperability across systems. It also creates consistency in how we represent data. A large
portion of utilizing data is around data management and clean up because data is inconsistently
represented. The HL7 v2 standard helps achieve data standardization by having required segments in
messages met so that all relevant information delivered can be interpreted clearly by the receiving
party. HL7 v2 messages use a non XML syntax that is based on segments separated by one character
delimiters. While not all segments are required, it is pertinent to have agreed on relevant segments,
limit over customization, and overcome implementation challenges. What type of systems exchange

It’s Like Apples and Oranges
The idiom It s like apples and oranges has been around for a long time. When
uttered it is meant to say that two things are so different that there is no basis for comparison.
For example, Even though they are twins, Mike and Bob are like apples and oranges, they
never agree on anything . Are Mike and Bob really so different? If so, is there truly no basis
for comparison? Much like Mike and Bob, apples and oranges may have more in common
than the person who would utter such a comment might think. What follows is a multi tiered
examination of the two fruits.
Historically, apples and oranges have been part of the human diet for more years than
have been recorded. It has been speculated that apples originated in the mountainous areas of
western Asia (Hathaway). Similarly, oranges are believed to come from Indo China, which is
also in western Asia (Morton). Both fruits were brought to the western hemisphere by European
settlers (Hathaway; Morton). Apples were likely introduced to North America by the English
or French (Hathaway). Oranges, on the other hand, were brought by the Spanish to Central and
South America (Morton).
Orange trees are known to science as Citrus Sinensis, whereas, apples trees are known
as Malus Domesticus (Apples Vs Oranges). Both belong to the Plantae kingdom, are classified

as Magnoliopsida and belong to the Magnoliophyta Division (Apples Vs Oranges). The

Advantage And Disadvantages Of Sunscreens
i) Sunscreen products:
What are sunscreens?
Sunscreens are products that combine multiple ingredients that help prevent the sun s ultraviolet (UV)
radiation from reaching the skin. Understanding UV radiation:
UV radiation is an electromagnetic radiation that reaches the earth from the sun. It is classified into
UVA, UVB and UVC according to their wavelength. UVC is usually absorbed by the ozone layer not
penetrating to earth while UVA and UVB penetrate the ozone layer and play an important role in skin
photo aging, sun burns and skin cancer. Most of the UVB IS filtered by the atmosphere. UVB can only
cause damage to the epidermal layers as it cannot perpetrate beyond the superficial skin layers. UVB
is responsible chiefly for skins reddening ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So the sunburn protection increases by increasing the SPF value. There is a misconception stating that
SPF is related to time of solar exposure not to the amount which is not true. Although solar energy
amount and solar exposure time are related, other factors impact the amount as an example the
intensity. (A 9:00a.m one hour exposure is equal to 1:00 p.m. 15 minutes exposure). In general, more
frequent reapplication is associated with decreased absorption of solar radiation and more protection.
So SPF is a relative measure of the amount of sunburn protection provided by sunscreens. It isn t a
reflection of time.
Sunscreen history and timeline:
It all started with the ancient civilizations used plant products to protect themselves from the sun
damage. Ancient Romans used olive oil while ancient Egyptians used extracts of jasmine and rice
plants that are still used in some products today. Zinc oxide creams have always been popular for
thousands of years but it was an opaque paste that left an unacceptable appearance in the skin which
led to the decrease in its use. It was popularly used as a sunburn preventative.

The Newspaper bridge project is a project where students are given the challenge to make a bridge
using newspaper, straws, and tape. Each material has a price. 1 sheet of paper $10, 1 straw $1, and 10
cm of tape $2. Students were given the challenge to make a bridge only using $25 of materials. In this
essay, I will be explaining the process which my group constructed our bridge for this project. And
answer the question; How to construct a newspaper bridge that will hold the most weight and is cost
efficient with the given materials?

They were using all of the money but had a low cost effectiveness ratio. Since their bridge was very
heavy and was mostly made out of only newspaper their bridge was probably very weak because it
had no reinforcements. My group used straws to reinforce our rods the same way that steel bars are
used in concrete to reinforce it. Without the reinforcement, the beams would crack because of the load
causing the beam to be in tension. Their bridges were made with only paper with tape holding it
together. As compared to my group s bridge we tried our best to reinforce our bridge with straws. With
no reinforcements, their bridge collapsed under the weight put on it. Other groups tried to make a
bridge with the least amount of money hold the most weight. In the future, I would try to make a
bridge this way. An example of this would be the group of Tucker, Hilary, and Jack in G band. They
were runner up to us in the strength efficiency ratio with 1167 g held/1g of mass, but their bridge only
cost $14 and their cost effectiveness ratio was 1000g/$1. The amount of paper they used caused their
bridge to be a little bit heavier than ours. I find it surprising how their bridge held so much since it was
not like any of the other bridge. I think making a bridge this way would be more of a challenge in the

Why The Battle Of The Bulge
The Battle of the Bulge, or Ardennen Offensive was a major German offensive. On December 16,
1944 towards the end of World War II the battle was the only major German offensive of the war,
launched by Adolf Hitler in order to attempt to reverse the decrease in his fortunes that had started on
D ay. He intended to accomplish this by trying to split Allied troops through an assault located within
the Ardennes Forest of Belgium, destroying enemy troops located here. He believed would ensure the
allies to form a peace treaty that would favor the Axis Powers. The attack in the Ardennes Forest did
not result in Hitler s predicted outcome. The Ardennes Forest, was a dense forest with only a few
roads that stretched seventy five miles, these roads were being help by four inexperienced and tired
American divisions. Using them element of surprise the German troops attacked the forest on
December 16, 1944. The American divisions, desperately sought to stop advancing German troops.
Despite their attempts by the end of the day the German stoops had broken through the American
lines, taking over important intersections and had surrounded the majority of the infantry division.

God s Grandeur By Gerald Manley Hopkins
At the beginning of the 19th Psalm, David writes, The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies
proclaim the work of his hands. Gerald Manley Hopkins seems to echo this theme in his poem, God s
Grandeur. The interesting aspects of this poem are a result of Hopkins different perspectives on nature.
In the beginning of the poem, Hopkins directs his focus on the glory of God through the lens of the
world. There is then a turning point where he diverts his attention to the problems mankind inflicts
upon creation. However, the closing of the poem involves him stepping back and reflecting upon the
eternality of God. God s Grandeur is interwoven with powerful imagery that is evoked by elaborate
double entendres that reflect the interaction between humans, nature, and the eternal grandeur of God
that surpasses Earth, which though temporary, is under constant care from God despite our actions.
The first stanza provides an interesting dynamic between creation and man. Hopkins writes, The world
is charged with grandeur of God. / It will flame out, shining from shook foil... (1 2). The first two lines
provide an interesting double entendre. When Hopkins writes, The world is charged with the grandeur
of God (1), is evokes the imagery of electricity. Thus, the shook foil mentioned in the second line
characterizes the world of having bursts of energy and light similar to when light is shone upon
metallic surfaces like foil. The other interpretation comes from

The Importance Of Higher Education
Over the course of a student s education they are told by teachers, counselors, and family members
that college is the way to success. Students are told that college is the way to getting a stable job
which leads to a stable life. The price of a higher education is very high and continues to increase. An
average public in state college tuition in 1997 1998 was around 3,200 dollars a year. This school year
the average public in state tuition has risen to 10,700. The problem is that students are being told that
college is a necessity, but the price continues to rise, making it difficult for students to get a higher
education. The evolution of society and industry has made the attainment of a college degree less
attainable or necessary than in the past.
Higher level education has been made to look like a necessity. Most high school students are expected
to go to a college or university after they graduate. As stated in an online article, Close to 90 percent
of today s high school graduates are expected to attend college at some point in young adulthood.
(Supiano par. 1). This article also stated that most adults with children want their kids to go to college
(Supiano). Students should have different options to choose from and not be pressured into
committing to such a big decision. There are other options and students should be exposed to them
because they might find something they feel more comfortable with and that they might enjoy more.

The Theory Of The Mathematics Teacher
While the rule taught youth is at sea when beyond his rules, the youth instructed in principles solves a
new case as readily as an old one . (Spencer, 1878, p.57)
What you see and what you hear depends a great deal on where you are standing. It also depends on
what sort of person you are . (Lewis, 1994, p.108)
The mathematics teacher builds examples into their arsenal of resources to help demonstrate the
mathematical principles they are trying to teach (Dreyfus, 1994). However, not all examples are
equally constructed and provide the same learning experience to the learner. Spencer (1978) believes
that learners who know principles are more prepared than rule focussed learners to tackle problems.
This is the same within mathematics, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

BACKGROUND
The study was conducted in a Leicestershire high school that accepts learners from year 7 to 9. Year 7s
enter directly from several feeder primary schools and generally leave to join a single upper school
where they sit GCSEs. Although it does not take the learners through formal exams, the school s
primary focus is on the preparation to attain qualifications. This means its Scheme of Work (SOW) is
fixed to meeting the National Curriculum (NC).
The class studied is a year 7 mixed ability mathematics class. This consisted of 32 learners with a boy
to girl ratio of 2:1. There are several behavioural issues regards some learners disrupting the class and,

Challenger Space Shuttle Disasters
During the Challenger Space Shuttle Disaster, many professional responsibilities were neglected.
First, engineers did not hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public (Ethics Code II. 1.
a.). For example, although the ice inspection team found the launch situation to be of great concern,
the launch director authorized it anyway (Texas A M University 5). At this point, professional bodies
or public authorities should have been notified.
Second, it was every engineer s responsibility to contact relevant officials on the matter. They should
have cooperate with the proper authorities in furnishing such information [and provided] assistance as
may be required (Ethics Code II. 1. f.). Third, there is an ethics violation when the recommendation to
launch is passed along without engineer support and signature. According to the Ethics Code, in
section II. 2. B., Engineers shall not affix their signatures to any plans or documents dealing with
subject matter in which they lack competence, nor to any plan or document not prepared under their
direction and control. Thiokol s management ignored this code and misrepresented the dissent among
the qualified engineers (Texas A M University 5). On a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, after receiving no support with management on the subject, Boisjoly should have
approached the appropriate authorities with the matter. Such response would be warranted as the
matter concerned public safety, the upmost priority for engineers. Also, since Thiokol management
ended up disregarding the engineer s judgment, Boisjoly should have removed himself from the
project and ceased all work on it. Such response is unaffected by Boisjoly s age, job status, or personal
life. While those factors may be important to him, as an engineer, matters concerned with the public
safety, health, and welfare come

Television s Impact On Television
One part of television that has always been a constant in a lot of programs is family. More particular,
the family sitcom and family dramas have been around for years and are still around today. Family
television shows are great programs for everyone due to the fact of being very family oriented.
However, the way families were portrayed when television first started out has changed drastically
with how some families are portrayed now. The evolution of the way families are viewed on screen
and off screen can be portrayed throughout the years on television. One television show that aired
from 1951 1957 was the series I Love Luc. This series was about a husband and a wife and their lives
together. They were a typical family in the 50s. Lucy stayed at home being a housewife at first while
Ricky would go out to work (Smith). The series even showed them sleeping in separate beds at that
time because we as the audience weren t allowed to see a couple sleep in the same bed. Later in the
series, Lucy became pregnant which wasn t a very common thing to show on television, especially at
that time (Garrison).
Typical families shown on television in the 1950s were a mother, father, and their children. One show
that started to break the mold was My Three Sons which premiered in 1960 and aired until 1972. My
Three Sons was about a widowed father raising his three sons on his own with the help of the kids
grandfather (Taflinger). In a matter of only ten years the family sitcom had

Comparison Between Walt Disney s The Lady And The Tramp
Often in tales we hear of Italy as the country of love, further emphasised in Walt Disney s The Lady
and The Tramp , where two mutts fall in love at first sight. Italy has touched the world, well known for
the birth of our modern pizza, and its variety of pastas and sauces, but there is so much more to this
country than its abundance of love and food. Outside of the fact that it is shaped as a boot, Italy is a
one of kind country that has made great strides in history in order to become what it is today.
Exploring the history of Italy, and learning about the daily life of the people who live there way of its

Weather Symbolism In The Great Gatsby
Rain, heat, fog, the weather had an immense role in both the setting and symbolically. Like Thomas
Foster stated, weather is never just weather. It s never just rain. And that goes for snow, sun, warmth,
cold, and probably sleet. (Fos) Weather in The Great Gatsby is enriched with meaning and impact to
the novel and one example being when Gatsby and Daisy met again after five years. The morning
before Gatsby and Daisy were going to meet, after Nick secretly arranged for Daisy to have tea with
Gatsby in his house, Gatsby send for Nick s lawn to be mowed and for a greenhouse to be set up in his
Nick s house. At two minutes for four (Fit) Daisy arrived and it was raining and before Daisy entered
the house Gatsby went out through the back ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, another weather forecast that had an impact was the mist that formed in the bay that
divided Gatsby s and Daisy s houses. On the day that Gatsby and Daisy reunited and they and Nick
went on a tour of Gatsby house, they all went to the dock and Gatsby stated If it wasn t for the mist we
could see your home across the bay (Fit), You always have a green light that burns all night at the end
of your dock (Fit). The green light represents Gatsby s dreams he haves for his future and having
Daisy is one of them, so when the mist/fog is dividing his house and Daisy s house the readers will
probably think that it represents that because Daisy is with him, Gatsby reached his green light.
Thomas Foster stated, Fog, for instance. It almost always signals some sort of confusion (Fos), and
with that being said the mist covering the green light at the end of Daisy s dock represents confusion
within Gatsby because even though Daisy is next to him at the time, he knows that she is still not truly
his.
Furthermore, the big conflict, the climax happens on one of the hottest days the characters experienced
in the novel and there is a purpose for that. The heat oppressive, the sun destructive (Fos), said
Thomas Foster. On the day that Gatsby and Daisy where going to tell Tom that they wanted to be
together, that s when Daisy started to complaining and saying that it s so hot (Fit) on the verge of tears
(Fit) and that they shall all go to town, they got in

Co2 Expelled Lab Report
Analysis: Using the data from Table 1, calculations were performed to determine how much CO2 was
expelled. This data is listed in Table 2. According to the data in Table 2, it is confirmed that more CO2
was expelled after exercising. While exercising, more oxygen is needed in the body for energy. Since
more oxygen is inhaled, it makes sense that more CO2 is exhaled.
Discussion: The control flask was used to establish a baseline so that the other flasks could be
compared to it. A control is needed so experimenters can have something to compare their results to.
When breathing into Flask 1, CO2 was released and added to the solution in the flask. Adding CO2

The Fifth Business And The Manticore By Robertson Davies
There is one human emotion that can paralyse us, lead us to lie both to ourselves and others, to take
action that we don t like, and to cripple any rational thought processes. It is self perpetuating if
allowed to get out of control. Its side effects are either anger, aggressiveness or fear and reclusiveness.
Its symptoms are irrational behaviour, lying, anguish, lack of self esteem, and in extreme cases,
thoughts of suicide. It is guilt. In both novels The Fifth Business and The Manticore by Robertson
Davies, guilt is a reoccurring theme throughout the novels and is a major force in one s life. Davies
demonstrates this by having both character feeling guilt. While both novels demonstrated themes of
guilt, Guilt comes from terrible Childhood experiences is a topic that keeps running all through both
The Fifth Business and returns throughout the following book in the series, The Manticore , and its
effect on the lives of the characters Dunstan Ramsay in Fifth Business and David Staunton in The

take, how compromise is a must before true identity or personality can be uncovered, and their similar
thoughts on religion: however, the main character in Fifth Business shows a stronger effect of guilt
due to horrible childhood incident.

The United Kingdom Of God
32. THE FUTURE I enjoy that Brunner talks about the already/not yet aspect of the future, because it
relies on a biblical approach to scripture. The Kingdom of God has come, but it has not yet come in its
fullness because the earth is not yet fully redeemed (142). This is an important distinction because it
shows that Brunner has done his research, and it also helps people understand exactly how he views
the Kingdom of God and how they should consequently view the Kingdom of God Near the end of the
chapter Brunner talks about how Christians must [wait] upon God for the Kingdom of Heaven (142).
While I agree with what he is saying, I think that Brunner should have qualified this statement to say
that believers now must be actively ready for the Kingdom of God to come in its fullness by doing the
work of Christ. While this may be implied in the message, stating it would have made Brunner s point
clearer and more powerful. 33. AFTERWARD? Brunner makes an excellent point when he states that
there is only one way to eternal life Christ (146). Many people shy away from the tough questions, but
Brunner rightly states the correct theological view that only through Christ are people saved. While
this declaration may seem trivial to some Christians, I believe that this statement is exactly why this
book is so powerful, because it clearly and assertively proclaims the truth about Christian doctrine,
which is then backed up by scripture. While Brunner is bold in many of his

The ICD-10 System
The ICD 10 system is not a perfect one. While it seems like a marked upgrade from the previous
system in terms of accuracy and efficiency, it also can be excessively complicated and heavily affected
insurance reimbursements, potential costing the patient more money. Because the ICD 10 uses a 3 7
alphanumerical system, versus the ICD 9 s 3 5 characters, codes can be far more accurate and detailed.
This makes it easier to collect and convey important data quickly, enhancing patient care. The
improved data collection will help providers and physicians improve procedures and structure for the
betterment of the patient. And because the ICD 10 emphasizes accuracy, it makes it significantly more

The History Of Honey Bees
Have you ever been stung by a honey bee? Many people in the world are actually nearly terrified of
honey bees. But, did you know, Honey bees are actually pretty smart? Honey bees are able to
recognize and remember different colors and keep track of up to 4 different landmarks. Honey bees
often get mistaken as bumblebees. A few things that make honey bees and bumblebees different are
that, bumblebees have short furry bodies and honey bees have long, wasp like bodies. Also, Honey
bees live in hives of up to 50,000 to 60,000 bees, while bumblebees live in nests of up to 40 to 500
bees. Bumblebees can sting more than once but, they will only sting if they are aggravated. Honey
bees on the other hand, die right after they have stung you. When a honey bee stings you, their stinger

Using Different Types Of Questions For Tests Essay
Often heavily debated on, specifically in an educational setting, is the technique and style in which
students are tested. Whether it be multiple choice, true or false, or short answer responses, test takers
may respond differently due to certain correlations between the way they are tested, and the way they
learn and take tests in general. Using different types of questions for tests has each of their own
benefits, as well as drawbacks. Test format, in addition to a student s age, major and mood, can lead to
inaccurate test results which may correlate with improper test formatting. Multiple choice responses
provide the student with several relatable choices, one being correct. Students then have a 25% chance
of selecting the right response, along with the ability to narrow down the answers. Providing the
answer and other comparably subjected answers presented with the question may stimulate the
individual s memory as well. In terms of short answer responses, the individual is forced to recall all
components of the experiment. Conversely, in true/false responses, students have a 50% chance of
getting the answer correct and are able to make a more precise decision. We predict that true and false
responses will yield a higher result than both short answer and multiple choice results. The Power of
Negative of Multiple Choice Testing, performed by Roediger III and Marsh, they found that learning
was interfered by using a multiple choice format. Also having the test be multiple

Greek City States Vs. Modern Greece
Greek city states are perfect examples of historian Peter Stearn s definition of classical civilizations.
At the height of its power between the 5th and 4th centuries, Greece s land included Asia Minor (in
modern Turkey), southern Italy, the island of Sicily, and the Greek islands. (Hornblower) Most of
these territories were independently governed and had strong political systems primarily democracy
which was born in Athens and became the basis for modern democratic governments in the United
States, France and other nations. Many Greek city states also developed core traditions in the arts and
sciences that endure today. All these factors distinguished Greek city states from river valley
civilizations as Stearns states, but like every society in history, each city state had its strengths and
weaknesses.
For example, there was a wide range of military power because Greek city states held different views
on its importance. During ancient times, Sparta built one of the strongest armies in classical Greece.
At the age of seven, all boys were moved from their homes to government barracks where they were
trained to be soldiers for 23 years. After that, they were expected to serve in the army for 30 years
until they retired at age 60. Sparta had an insatiable appetite for battle and aggressively went after the
territories of other city states, especially the land of its arch rival Athens.
Like Sparta, Athens was one of the largest and most formidable city states, but military

Color Constancy And Working Memory
Is working memory prolonged based on the colour of the font? Furthermore, is it easier to remember
words in bright font than dark font? As colour is a visual stimulus, it has a large impact in improving
the number of words retained in the brain. However, these stimuli can be changed (Ikeda Osaka, 2006,
p.1). Once a word is memorised it is then stored in the brain short or long term. There is three stage
model of how memories are stored which organises memories that are maintained in the brain. The
first stage is sensory memory which stores perceptual input briefly. Secondly short term memory
which holds information for up to thirty seconds and finally; long term memory holding memories
over a large amount of time.
Fawcett, Lawrence Taylor (2006) focused on whether deliberate forgetting of certain memories would
impact the probability of recovering it later from long term memory. The participants were fifteen

The researchers looked at this area of study because colour constancy allows humans to see colours of
objects. If a person did not have colour consistency, an object cannot be identified based on the colour
alone as the changing of light can change the colour of an object. Participants were placed into a Low
Working Memory or High Working memory group. Each group had three males and nine females.
High Working Memory participants showed significantly better colour constancy than Low Working
Memory participants, but the simple colour memory of all participants was consistent. In conclusion
the researchers found that there is in fact a relation between working memory and colour constancy.
This relation may be driven by a requirement for attentional control for successive color constancy, an
idea that has not been considered previously. (Allen, Beilock, Shevell,

Examples Of Andy In Shawshank Redemption
An individual s personality or persona is created through a combination of events a person would
receive from society, and how the individual absorbs these events gives the bases for that individual to
develop hishers persona. In the novella, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, Stephen King
uses the character Andrew Dufresne to demonstrate the influence society has on the development of a
person s persona or identity. When change of social environment occurs to an individual, it is natural
reaction for the individual to climb the social chain, so that they may find contentment. The first time
Andy talks with Red, and Andy is still new and is faced with the drastic change in environment and
the way of communication being less formal, thus making Andy look more of a snob to other inmates
at Shawshank, an Red s thoughts Andy had a reputation for being a [snob] and a [cold fish]. (King 20).
The words cold fish and snob are used to clearly describe how the character Andy is seen by others, is
used by King to present the readers a starting point for which the character Andy can build up from
and develop a new persona. Once an individual finds their place in the new environment, society
molds the individual into a working part of the social chain. The day Andy, Red, and a couple of
others were working on the top of a roof, and Andy overheard one of the guards talking about the
fortune he had made, but complaining about the income taxes. Andy agrees with the guard, that

Analysis Of Ibn Haldun And Adam Smith And David Hume And...
It is one of the hardest questions and unfortunately still unknown in the living world in despite of a
myriad of academic studies. Many scholars from all around world asked this magic question in
different time over the history. From Ibn Haldun and Adam Smith to David Hume and Karl Marx,
from Alfred Marshall and Robert Solow to Paul Romer and Daron Acemoglu, there have been so
many prominent and distinguished scholars who tried to find an answer to this question in order to
understand the world better and some of them are still trying to find a fully satisfactory answer about
this one of the most interesting and challenging areas in academic studies. Here is an example of one
the answer to show that it is old question. Ibn Khaldun gave his account of the stages of economic
development, from nomadic to agricultural to more cooperation in economic matters which occur
through an expansion of a town to a city, where demand increases and skilled labor congregates and
expands production both ill quantity and in refinement. Economic growth continues so long as there is
an extra effort, which creates capital accumulation, which in turn, combined with effort, leads to more
production and the development of crafts in the cities. Wealth expands through labor and its efforts,
whereas with less human effort there may occur a reversal to stagnation, followed by a downward
trend in people s standard of living. (I.W. Oweiss). Needless to say, it would be too much to explain

Essay about The Effects of Runoff to Marine Life
Runoff is defined as excess water that soil does not absorb after a storm. Runoff collects various
particles on its way downhill, such as pesticides and nutrients, from the surrounding area, and moves
them into the nearby bodies of water. Some nutrients carried by runoff include: nitrate, ammonium,
and phosphate; all of which are found in golf course turf fertilizer (experiment). When these excess
chemicals enter the water, they create an imbalance in the ecosystem. This imbalance can be harmful
to inhabitants both in, and around the body of water. Those affected in the water may be subjected to a
decrease in dissolved oxygen levels, making it harder for the animals to breath. The levels of acidity in
the water may increase, causing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sliva and Dudley Williams gathered information that with increased urban land use, there were
increased chemical fluxes, and their data they gathered from increased agricultural land use disagreed
with the results of other similar studies. They determined major trends in water quality and where
pollution could potentially be derived from (Sliva Dudley Williams, 2001). It is a known fact that
unnecessary amounts of lawn fertilizer, containing nitrogen and phosphorus, are commonly used, and
result in pollution of the Chesapeake Bay. This occurs through runoff. Not all of the nutrients from
runoff get transported directly to the Bay. Overtime, some are absorbed into the ground, where they
mix with groundwater, and later meets up with the Bay. For example, in a stream near Baltimore,
scientists discovered that 56% of the nutrients in the water came from lawn fertilizer alone
(Chesapeake Bay Program, 2011). Nitrogen and phosphorus are not only the primary nutrients in lawn
fertilizer, they are also the primary nutrients required to sustain aquatic biological productivity, in the
correct moderation. In freshwater ecosystems, the growth of phytoplankton and algae are influenced
by a surplus of nitrogen and phosphorus. Aquatic grasses living under this excess growth are then
inhibited from growing, eventually leading towards grass bed loss, due to the lack of sunlight
available. Lack of sunlight results in a lack of photosynthesis. Unlike the more

  • 2. Exploration Of Good And Evil In Rashomon On one level Rashomon, by director Akira Kurosawa, is a classic whodunnit, a tale of rape, murder, deceit and redemption. How was the samurai warrior killed and his wife violated in lonely woodlands at a time of dissonance in medieval Japan? Suspects emerge and an inquisition is held. But why do all players profess their guilt, rather than protest their innocence? Kurosawa has taken two stories (the 1950 film is loosely based on the works of writer Ryunosuke Akutagawa) and created a multifaceted masterpiece peppered with shifts and contrasts. He delves into aggression and accountability to explore the collective Japanese consciousness after World War Two. He considers the meaning of truth and the judging of others. In doing so, Kurosawa ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kurosawa unsettles at the outset with rain and gloom, then employs a series of rapid cuts to draw his viewer into the heart of the moral dilemma. His is a radical experimentation with narrative marked by dislocation and incompleteness (Goodwin, page 114). Kurosawa himself wrote: These strange impulses of the human heart would be exposed through the use of an elaborately fashioned play of light and dark (Akira Kurosawa, Something Like an Autobiography, p 182). It would be a keynote for the entire film (Akira Kurosawa, Interviews, edited by Bert Cardullo, p. 176). That keynote is struck as the woodcutter recalls the crime. Flashbacks were an unconventional way of constructing a storyline, and Kurosawa s create a complex intertextual relationship. The woodcutter strides into thicket, through full light, dappled light and shade, in an evolving montage of surety, uncertainty and disquiet. The scene plays with long shots, pans, close ups and takes in high angles and laterals. The segment is still analysed today for its technical and visual brilliance (Martinez, p 31). The shooting script for Rashomon was littered with directions to create a sense of motion, to pan, to dolly in and out, notes cinema expert Donald Richie (The Films of Akira Kurosawa, Donald Richie, pages 77, 78). It is here that Kurosawa and cameraman Kazuo Miyagawa break one of cinematography s taboos shooting directly into the sun. With craft ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Proteins And The Membrane a) It is known that the majority of proteins exist outside the cell. This is because they are transported via a biosynthetic secretory pathway which is known as the ER Golgi pathway 2. That is, they are transported from the ER to the Golgi. From the Golgi, the protein(s) are then sent to their respective locations which can be to the plasma membrane (lining the outside of a cell), secretory vesicles, or lysosomes 2. There are certain transport vesicles which exist on the ER exit sites which are are COPII coated2. The synthesized proteins are first packed into these transport vesicles before being sent to the Golgi apparatus 2. This process can also be selective 2. That is, it can happen with the help of some transport signals which are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The vesicles from the medial Golgi containing the medial resident proteins then fuse with the previously formed vis Golgi to form a new medial Golgi 2. This process then repeats in the trans Golgi, forming a new trans Golgi 2. After this, the membrane proteins are finally processed by the Golgi resident proteins 2. Then, the vesicle which contains the membrane proteins fuses with the plasma membrane; its final destination 2. It is suspected that the lumen of the trans Golgi network is responsible for grouping the proteins into their respective transport vesicles which then carry them to their final destinations 2. b) It has been found that many proteins are transported to their final destinations in certain unconventional ways. That is, they do not depend on the ER Golgi pathway for transportation/secretion because they lack the signal peptides 10. The four different types of unconventional protein secretion can be categorized based on whether they are non vesicular or vesicular 10. (1) Type I and II are non vesicular pathways 10. Type I is said to include self sustained protein translocation across plasma membrane , which means direct transportation of proteins from the cytoplasm to the plasma membrane, and type II is described as ABC transport based secretion 10. (2) Type III and IV are vesicular based pathways 10. Type III includes autophagy based secretion , while type IV is for proteins that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The purpose of this insurance is to keep part of the wages of workers during a recession or economic cycle. • 5. Violence, Foolishness, And Impulsiveness In The Knight s Tale The Knight s Tale is one of many tales from the Canterbury Tales. This story sets in the city of Athens. Which opens into the theme of violence, foolishness, impetuousness, and impulsiveness; initially exceedingly emotional responses. One example is when two of our main characters, Palmon and Arcite, both fall in love with Theseus s sister in law (Emelye). These two blood brothers, leave each other after seeing Emelye out of the window of the tower. Which, I believe is a very impulsive decision, for they have not got time to know who she is and her personality. Also, they act like mortal enemies after just seeing her, so this thought process was completely impulsive and based on her looks. And later, Arcite tries to get to know her better after he was released from his imprisonment sentence by disguising himself, so he can take a job as a page in Emelye s chamber. I believe this shows that he wants to know her, but also it shows he is not being honest with her, which shows he was being impulsive and deceiving. He only learned about the little things that she liked, not her personality. Emelye learned a little bit about Arcite after the little conversing they shared, so they learned a little of each other s personality. This shows that the friendship was growing and not an intimate relationship, like Arcite wanted. So the story goes on and both Palmon and Arcite have been released from prison. And they happen to both decide to wander in the woods. Then they confront each other, each claiming the right to Emelye. The next day, they were brutally hacking away at each other. Many students will argue that he is old and is to confusing, others will say he s boring. Then on the other side of the argument students argue that he has shaped the modern english language and has changed society for the better. Whilst others are undecided, listening to both sides of the argument and not being able to decide. In this essay both sides will be discussed; talking about quoting shakespeare and how much we use his words and phrases everyday, how the emotions in shakespeare s plays are still relevant in modern society and audiences still react in the way the play intended and finally how social norms have changed and it is no longer socially acceptable with it putting the wrong ideas into people s heads. Everyone quotes shakespeare or uses on of his works at least once everyday. Most people don t even realize we are doing it. Most people probably think it s greek to me (a phrase created by shakespeare), when really it is very common In between writing poems and plays shakespeare was creating new words and phrases to fit his plays and other works. Shakespeare almost created a whole nother language in his time creating round 1700 words. • 8. Health Information Exchange Analysis Health information exchange (HIE) delivers information when and where it is needed to provide improvements in healthcare quality and efficiency. HIE requires essential coding standards throughout health information management so that information can be accessed, merged, divided and/or shared with other healthcare organizations. In order to reach interoperability; message, exchange, and terminological standards are a few key attributes needed. HL7 v2, CDA and RxNorm aid in reaching these standards to achieve HIE. Standards are important because it facilitates good representation of data and interoperability across systems. It also creates consistency in how we represent data. A large portion of utilizing data is around data management and clean up because data is inconsistently represented. The HL7 v2 standard helps achieve data standardization by having required segments in messages met so that all relevant information delivered can be interpreted clearly by the receiving party. HL7 v2 messages use a non XML syntax that is based on segments separated by one character delimiters. While not all segments are required, it is pertinent to have agreed on relevant segments, limit over customization, and overcome implementation challenges. What type of systems exchange HL7 ... When uttered it is meant to say that two things are so different that there is no basis for comparison. For example, Even though they are twins, Mike and Bob are like apples and oranges, they never agree on anything . Are Mike and Bob really so different? If so, is there truly no basis for comparison? Much like Mike and Bob, apples and oranges may have more in common than the person who would utter such a comment might think. What follows is a multi tiered examination of the two fruits. Historically, apples and oranges have been part of the human diet for more years than have been recorded. It has been speculated that apples originated in the mountainous areas of western Asia (Hathaway). Similarly, oranges are believed to come from Indo China, which is also in western Asia (Morton). Both fruits were brought to the western hemisphere by European settlers (Hathaway; Morton). Apples were likely introduced to North America by the English or French (Hathaway). Oranges, on the other hand, were brought by the Spanish to Central and South America (Morton). Orange trees are known to science as Citrus Sinensis, whereas, apples trees are known as Malus Domesticus (Apples Vs Oranges). Sunscreens are products that combine multiple ingredients that help prevent the sun s ultraviolet (UV) radiation from reaching the skin. Understanding UV radiation: UV radiation is an electromagnetic radiation that reaches the earth from the sun. It is classified into UVA, UVB and UVC according to their wavelength. UVC is usually absorbed by the ozone layer not penetrating to earth while UVA and UVB penetrate the ozone layer and play an important role in skin photo aging, sun burns and skin cancer. • 17. God s Grandeur By Gerald Manley Hopkins At the beginning of the 19th Psalm, David writes, The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Gerald Manley Hopkins seems to echo this theme in his poem, God s Grandeur. The interesting aspects of this poem are a result of Hopkins different perspectives on nature. In the beginning of the poem, Hopkins directs his focus on the glory of God through the lens of the world. There is then a turning point where he diverts his attention to the problems mankind inflicts upon creation. However, the closing of the poem involves him stepping back and reflecting upon the eternality of God. God s Grandeur is interwoven with powerful imagery that is evoked by elaborate double entendres that reflect the interaction between humans, nature, and the eternal grandeur of God that surpasses Earth, which though temporary, is under constant care from God despite our actions. The first stanza provides an interesting dynamic between creation and man. Hopkins writes, The world is charged with grandeur of God. / It will flame out, shining from shook foil... (1 2). The first two lines provide an interesting double entendre. When Hopkins writes, The world is charged with the grandeur of God (1), is evokes the imagery of electricity. Students are told that college is the way to getting a stable job which leads to a stable life. The price of a higher education is very high and continues to increase. An average public in state college tuition in 1997 1998 was around 3,200 dollars a year. This school year the average public in state tuition has risen to 10,700. The problem is that students are being told that college is a necessity, but the price continues to rise, making it difficult for students to get a higher education. More particular, the family sitcom and family dramas have been around for years and are still around today. Family television shows are great programs for everyone due to the fact of being very family oriented. However, the way families were portrayed when television first started out has changed drastically with how some families are portrayed now. The evolution of the way families are viewed on screen and off screen can be portrayed throughout the years on television. One television show that aired from 1951 1957 was the series I Love Luc. This series was about a husband and a wife and their lives together. They were a typical family in the 50s. Lucy stayed at home being a housewife at first while Ricky would go out to work (Smith). The series even showed them sleeping in separate beds at that time because we as the audience weren t allowed to see a couple sleep in the same bed. Later in the series, Lucy became pregnant which wasn t a very common thing to show on television, especially at that time (Garrison). Typical families shown on television in the 1950s were a mother, father, and their children. One show that started to break the mold was My Three Sons which premiered in 1960 and aired until 1972. The green light represents Gatsby s dreams he haves for his future and having Daisy is one of them, so when the mist/fog is dividing his house and Daisy s house the readers will probably think that it represents that because Daisy is with him, Gatsby reached his green light. The Fifth Business And The Manticore By Robertson Davies There is one human emotion that can paralyse us, lead us to lie both to ourselves and others, to take action that we don t like, and to cripple any rational thought processes. It is self perpetuating if allowed to get out of control. Its side effects are either anger, aggressiveness or fear and reclusiveness. Its symptoms are irrational behaviour, lying, anguish, lack of self esteem, and in extreme cases, thoughts of suicide. It is guilt. • 27. The United Kingdom Of God 32. THE FUTURE I enjoy that Brunner talks about the already/not yet aspect of the future, because it relies on a biblical approach to scripture. The Kingdom of God has come, but it has not yet come in its fullness because the earth is not yet fully redeemed (142). This is an important distinction because it shows that Brunner has done his research, and it also helps people understand exactly how he views the Kingdom of God and how they should consequently view the Kingdom of God Near the end of the chapter Brunner talks about how Christians must [wait] upon God for the Kingdom of Heaven (142). While I agree with what he is saying, I think that Brunner should have qualified this statement to say that believers now must be actively ready for the Kingdom of God to come in its fullness by doing the work of Christ. While this may be implied in the message, stating it would have made Brunner s point clearer and more powerful. 33. AFTERWARD? Brunner makes an excellent point when he states that there is only one way to eternal life Christ (146). Many people shy away from the tough questions, but Brunner rightly states the correct theological view that only through Christ are people saved. While this declaration may seem trivial to some Christians, I believe that this statement is exactly why this book is so powerful, because it clearly and assertively proclaims the truth about Christian doctrine, which is then backed up by scripture. While it seems like a marked upgrade from the previous system in terms of accuracy and efficiency, it also can be excessively complicated and heavily affected insurance reimbursements, potential costing the patient more money. Because the ICD 10 uses a 3 7 alphanumerical system, versus the ICD 9 s 3 5 characters, codes can be far more accurate and detailed. • 30. Using Different Types Of Questions For Tests Essay Often heavily debated on, specifically in an educational setting, is the technique and style in which students are tested. Whether it be multiple choice, true or false, or short answer responses, test takers may respond differently due to certain correlations between the way they are tested, and the way they learn and take tests in general. Using different types of questions for tests has each of their own benefits, as well as drawbacks. Test format, in addition to a student s age, major and mood, can lead to inaccurate test results which may correlate with improper test formatting. Multiple choice responses provide the student with several relatable choices, one being correct. Students then have a 25% chance of selecting the right response, along with the ability to narrow down the answers. Providing the answer and other comparably subjected answers presented with the question may stimulate the individual s memory as well. In terms of short answer responses, the individual is forced to recall all components of the experiment. Conversely, in true/false responses, students have a 50% chance of getting the answer correct and are able to make a more precise decision. We predict that true and false responses will yield a higher result than both short answer and multiple choice results. The Power of Negative of Multiple Choice Testing, performed by Roediger III and Marsh, they found that learning was interfered by using a multiple choice format. Also having the test be multiple ... At the height of its power between the 5th and 4th centuries, Greece s land included Asia Minor (in modern Turkey), southern Italy, the island of Sicily, and the Greek islands. (Hornblower) Most of these territories were independently governed and had strong political systems primarily democracy which was born in Athens and became the basis for modern democratic governments in the United States, France and other nations. Many Greek city states also developed core traditions in the arts and sciences that endure today. All these factors distinguished Greek city states from river valley civilizations as Stearns states, but like every society in history, each city state had its strengths and weaknesses. For example, there was a wide range of military power because Greek city states held different views on its importance. During ancient times, Sparta built one of the strongest armies in classical Greece. At the age of seven, all boys were moved from their homes to government barracks where they were trained to be soldiers for 23 years. After that, they were expected to serve in the army for 30 years until they retired at age 60. • 33. Color Constancy And Working Memory Is working memory prolonged based on the colour of the font? Furthermore, is it easier to remember words in bright font than dark font? As colour is a visual stimulus, it has a large impact in improving the number of words retained in the brain. However, these stimuli can be changed (Ikeda Osaka, 2006, p.1). Once a word is memorised it is then stored in the brain short or long term. There is three stage model of how memories are stored which organises memories that are maintained in the brain. The first stage is sensory memory which stores perceptual input briefly. Secondly short term memory which holds information for up to thirty seconds and finally; long term memory holding memories over a large amount of time. Fawcett, Lawrence Taylor (2006) focused on whether deliberate forgetting of certain memories would impact the probability of recovering it later from long term memory. The participants were fifteen females and five male undergraduate students who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If a person did not have colour consistency, an object cannot be identified based on the colour alone as the changing of light can change the colour of an object. Participants were placed into a Low Working Memory or High Working memory group. Each group had three males and nine females. High Working Memory participants showed significantly better colour constancy than Low Working Memory participants, but the simple colour memory of all participants was consistent. In conclusion the researchers found that there is in fact a relation between working memory and colour constancy. This relation may be driven by a requirement for attentional control for successive color constancy, an idea that has not been considered previously. (Allen, Beilock, Shevell, ... Many scholars from all around world asked this magic question in different time over the history. From Ibn Haldun and Adam Smith to David Hume and Karl Marx, from Alfred Marshall and Robert Solow to Paul Romer and Daron Acemoglu, there have been so many prominent and distinguished scholars who tried to find an answer to this question in order to understand the world better and some of them are still trying to find a fully satisfactory answer about this one of the most interesting and challenging areas in academic studies. Here is an example of one the answer to show that it is old question. Ibn Khaldun gave his account of the stages of economic development, from nomadic to agricultural to more cooperation in economic matters which occur through an expansion of a town to a city, where demand increases and skilled labor congregates and expands production both ill quantity and in refinement. Economic growth continues so long as there is an extra effort, which creates capital accumulation, which in turn, combined with effort, leads to more production and the development of crafts in the cities. Wealth expands through labor and its efforts, whereas with less human effort there may occur a reversal to stagnation, followed by a downward trend in people s standard of living. (I.W. Oweiss). • 41. Essay about The Effects of Runoff to Marine Life Runoff is defined as excess water that soil does not absorb after a storm. Runoff collects various particles on its way downhill, such as pesticides and nutrients, from the surrounding area, and moves them into the nearby bodies of water. Some nutrients carried by runoff include: nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate; all of which are found in golf course turf fertilizer (experiment). When these excess chemicals enter the water, they create an imbalance in the ecosystem. This imbalance can be harmful to inhabitants both in, and around the body of water. Those affected in the water may be subjected to a decrease in dissolved oxygen levels, making it harder for the animals to breath. The levels of acidity in the water may increase, causing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sliva and Dudley Williams gathered information that with increased urban land use, there were increased chemical fluxes, and their data they gathered from increased agricultural land use disagreed with the results of other similar studies. They determined major trends in water quality and where pollution could potentially be derived from (Sliva Dudley Williams, 2001). It is a known fact that unnecessary amounts of lawn fertilizer, containing nitrogen and phosphorus, are commonly used, and result in pollution of the Chesapeake Bay. This occurs through runoff. Not all of the nutrients from runoff get transported directly to the Bay. Overtime, some are absorbed into the ground, where they mix with groundwater, and later meets up with the Bay. For example, in a stream near Baltimore, scientists discovered that 56% of the nutrients in the water came from lawn fertilizer alone (Chesapeake Bay Program, 2011). Nitrogen and phosphorus are not only the primary nutrients in lawn fertilizer, they are also the primary nutrients required to sustain aquatic biological productivity, in the correct moderation. In freshwater ecosystems, the growth of phytoplankton and algae are influenced by a surplus of nitrogen and phosphorus. Aquatic grasses living under this excess growth are then inhibited from growing, eventually leading towards grass bed loss, due to the lack of sunlight available. Lack of sunlight results in a lack of photosynthesis. Unlike the more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
