Drake Equation Research Paper
The Drake Equation is used to estimate of the rate at which stars are born in the galaxy, the fraction of
stars with planets, and the fraction of those planets on which life could originate, and so on. Although,
by those calculations, there should be about 10,000 civilizations in our galaxy capable of interstellar
communication. So, where are all the aliens? Extraterrestrial intelligence must exist somewhere in the
universe, but we might not be able to communicate with each other because of complications such as
different forms of communication, huge distances between each other, and/or they don t want to talk
back.
In today s society, programs backed by private sources of funding (nonprofit), such as SETI (Search

It s reasonable to assume that how we re trying to communicate with possible extraterrestrial
intelligence may not be how they communicate, resulting in us believing no one is listening. It is
possible that our means of communication are primitive in comparison, and that our logic may be
vastly different than theirs. For example, if you were to send morse code in the hopes of someone
responding, it s mostly that no one is going to respond, let alone even notice it. Secondly, we may
have not been looking in the right places either. A prime reason for this is that we really don t know
where to look in the first place. We have ideas, but nothing concrete whatsoever. Another reason may
just be that we haven t had enough time yet, as we can only send messages so quickly, in so many
different directions to cover a possible infinite space across the

Iraq Human Rights Violations
In 1948 the United Nations established the United Declaration of Human Rights(UDHR). 70 years
later many countries continue to abridge these rules and deny the people the rights they deserve. For
over a year now Iraq has been denying its residents rights when pertaining to the court of law. It is
understandable that the Iraqi Government does not want other countries interfering with how they
handle their issues, but innocents, and wrongly convicted individuals, are being punished for things
they didn t do. Iraq s 10 minute trials are unjust and a violation of the people s human rights. Trials
being short and mainly directed towards foreigners, many of the more serious crimes are not being
noticed. Currently trials are only lasting about 10 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many of the cases that are brought up towards the court are foreigners from other countries. Margaret
Coker explains, What concerns me the most in these trials is that the system is fundamentally
prejudiced against foreign individuals... you are foreign, and you were in ISIS territory, there is no
need to provide more evidence (Coker, Para. 27). This is a violation of Article 2 of the UDHR, which
states that no one can have their basic human rights taken away due to race, sex, or cultural origin.
Other than cultural origin, race also been a determining factor in the trials. As said from Margaret
Coker, ...cases, individuals have been returned to their home countries, such as a group of four
Russian women and 27 children in February... (Coker, Para. 25). In this case the judge decided to hear
what the people had to say due to them looking European or American. The judge let the group of
Russians free instead of being sentenced to death like all of the others. This itself is also another
violation of Article 2 of the UDHR where people cannot be denied rights due to race. For over a year
now people are being tried unfairly in court and being denied basic human rights because of their skin

Discourse On Livy
Niccolò Machiavelli is very well known as an important and influential Italian historian, politician,
philosopher, and writer during the Renaissance. His book, Discourses on Livy, is a discussion
regarding the classical history of early Ancient Rome, although it uses contemporary political
examples and strays far away from the subject of Rome at times. It is presented as a series of lessons
on how a republic should be started and structured. Most importantly, it constantly brings up the idea
of corruption and corrupt people, which is not surprising because we all desire things and search for
the simplest way to obtain it, even though the easiest way to obtain something might be a corrupt way.
When Machiavelli uses the term corrupt or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It seems more difficult to change the regime. This is the source of corruption. When one class of
society strives to better themselves and succeed in doing so, it causes corruption. Machiavelli spends a
chunk of Discourses on Livy discussing how states are corrupt and the citizens within them are
corrupt as well. The first important point he makes when it comes to corruption is that men do not
know how to be entirely good or bad. He claims, they concluded that men clearly do not know how to
be honourably bad or perfectly good, and that when an evil deed contains in itself some grandeur or
some generosity, they do not know how to carry it out (Machiavelli 82). Thus, Machiavelli is
elaborating on the theme of good and bad and how even those who are good and are not considered
corrupt still make bad decisions sometimes. Generally, men decide on a middle course, instead of
choosing a completely good or bad course. This decision is seen as most hazardous because it is hard
to claim someone is good if they do not make entirely good decisions and it is hard to claim someone
is bad if they do not make entirely bad decisions. The second important point Machiavelli makes is
that men are easily corrupted and even those who are good can easily turn bad. He states, It should
also be noted, in this matter or the decemvirate, how easily men may be corrupted and how they may
transform themselves and give

Essay about Why we believe in ghosts
English 1 research paper

Why people believe in ghosts.
Lying in bed in the middle of the night while sleep eludes me, a noise breaks through the silence. Oh
my God! What was that!? Maybe it was just my imagination, or maybe it was just the house settling.
There it is again! I must be hearing things. I get cold and my body starts to shiver uncontrollably. I
peek to where the sound comes from and I could swear I see something through the dark room; it
appears even darker than the surrounding area. Oh my! I think it just moved. My breathing becomes
labored and I pull the covers over my head, trying to calm myself down while making my brain work
through what just happened. Was I dreaming? Or did I just see a ghost?

The belief in Doppelgangers and poltergeist has also crossed the ocean over to the U.S. Many people
still report poltergeist activity in their homes.
Another example of a cultures belief in ghosts is Ireland s and Scotland s (also known as the Celt s)
belief in Samhain or All Hallow s Eve. Samhain is a festival that is celebrated from October 31st to
November 2nd. Samhain is a time of the year that celebrates the last harvest before the winter comes,
and is dedicated to the Lord of the Dead (Guiley 19). The Celt s believe that the dead will come out of
their final resting place and mess with the crops. Also, it is believed that communication with the dead
is easier during Samhain. It is said that the veil that separates the living from the dead is at its thinnest
during this time. The Lord of the Dead holds a sentencing of spirits, where if they were good they can
exist in the form of a human, and if they were bad, the form of an animal. Offerings of food and drink
are made to the Lord of the Dead so he would not be so severe in his sentencing. Many Celt s would
dress up on Samhain to confuse the spirits that were roaming around so they wouldn t stop, but
continue to pass them by (Guiley 19). This festival is still celebrated today as Halloween. Currently,
Americans hold by some of the old traditions by dressing up and making offerings by handing out
candy. Many Celt s still hold beliefs in the old ways. Celt s also believe in what is

Project Delivery Methods For Distinct Allocation Of Risk...
Project delivery methods allow for distinct allocation of risk and responsibilities within a construction
contract. Each unique construction project calls for a defined delivery method and a written contract in
order to ensure the success of the venture. A project delivery option is defined as a method for
procurement which the owner s assignment of delivery risk and performance for design and
construction has been transferred to another party (Mahdi 564). After a legal and appropriate contract
is signed, contractual privity exists which allows the contracting parties to hold each other responsible
for their actions. The design bid build delivery method is often referred to the traditional method of
contractual relationships in the construction industry. This method allows the owner to select a design
professional based off of the quality of their work, whereas the selection of the construction manager
is based off competitive bids submitted after the completion of the design. The traditional method may
be viewed as the tried and true system of creating successful contractual relationships, but the
evolution of the industry has called for this method to take on different forms. One such form is the
construction manager at risk (CMR) method, which allows for collaboration between the owner,
designer, and construction manager during the early stages of the design process and continues
throughout the life of the construction project. This agreement makes up thirty percent

The Futile Goal of Nicholas Branch in Don DeLillo s Libra...
The vast amount of evidence associated with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, an event
that occurred more than fifty years ago, is still being collected and examined by an array of scientists,
professional historians, and conspiracy theorists. Periodically, with continuous developments and
improvements in technology, new information is being discovered that either relates to an existing
theory about the assassination or inspires additional assumptions about the identity and location of
another supposed shooter. According to author Don DeLillo, the immense quantity of the information
pertaining to the heinous crime committed in Dallas on November 22nd of 1963 will never lead to or

He feels as if he must make meaning out of all the material in his possession and so, because he does
not know how to accomplish this, he remains perpetually immobile in his attempt to uncover and write
the true history of the assassination. Branch s objective to investigate all the facts about the
assassination places him in a chaotic situation. It is impossible for him to account for every detail,
fact, and occurrence linked to Kennedy s assassination because there is already too much information
for him to examine and much that has yet to be discovered. Christopher M. Mott, in his essay Libra
and the Subject of History , comments on Branch s need for absolute closure and the chaotic results
that arise: The novel implies that the version of the world that informs our government s practices and
dominates our episteme intends to account for every detail of existence. It employs a totalizing
discourse, a discourse of rational examination and explanation. Libra clearly indicates that this
penchant for total explanation leads, in fact, to total chaos. We simply cannot account for every detail,
every nuance. (143)
Branch s desire to piece together the factual events of the assassination has led to his abandonment of
life. He will forever be confined to his, as DeLillo describes, room of theories (57) since he must study
everything about the event. However, the CIA is constantly supplying him

This technique is used to layer foreground and background images based on color hues or the chroma
range. The CGI technician layers the computer modelling around the actor. Programs such as
PhotoKey 6 Pro make it possible to render the images seemlessly. Being a CGI technician requires
computer knowledge and takes hours to edit and add in the actors into the computer generated world.
An example of a seemless CGI movie is Avatar which cost $425,000,000 to make but grossed $2.7
Billion worldwide (www.the numbers.com/movie/budgets/). For every 1/24 of a second or one frame
of film it took 47 hours of rendering (www.imdb.com/title/tt0499549/trivia). There are specialized
training school for Special Effects Technicians, such as the Art institute with multiple locations across
the country and a few in California.. A College degree is not required it is common especially in the
area of CGI. A Pyrotechnician must be certified by the state that they work in and pass a Pyrotechnic
safety and handling course. The Physical Effects Technician should have a firm grasp of art styles and
art mediums. Now that we know what a Special Effects Technician does, what kind of monetary
compensation do they earn. A person can specialize in one or more areas of expertise.
Their earnings vary due to geographic location. Since a large majority of the special effects are used in
movies, California offers the highest yearly wage of $85,000 per year,New York has a range of

William Shakespeare s Twelfth Night Essay examples
William Shakespeare s Twelfth Night
Twelfth Night is one of Shakespeare s most famous comedies, involving complex plots, which result
in hilarious outcomes. The main plot of Twelfth Night tells of Count Orsino s efforts to woo the Lady
Olivia who does not return his affection. Instead, Olivia is smitten with Orsino s servant Cesario,
unaware of his true identity. Cesario is actually shipwrecked Viola who, believing her brother has
drowned, dresses up as a man to work for Orsino. Viola consequently falls in love with Orsino who
believes her to be Cesario. In addition, Shakespeare has created an equally confusing sub plot

In my opinion the joke that was played upon Malvolio to humiliate him was taken too far and in the
end he was notoriously abused unjustifiably. Feste, as usual, realises before the other characters that
the joke has gone too far and loses interest in it, I would we were well rid of this knavery On the other
hand I believe that Malvolio did deserve some of the punishment that he was subjected to simply
because of his pompous and arrogant personality. Malvolio was a puritan and that is why his
behaviour is so contrasting to that of all the other characters in this play, Dost thou think, because thou
art virtuous, there shall be no more cakes and ale?
When Shakespeare wrote Twelfth Night in 1623 it was essentially ahead of its time because the
Malvolio based sub plot foreshadowed the conflict of the Civil War in the next century. I believe that
the opinions of the Puritans in general are expressed through Malvolio in the course of this play.
Puritans on the whole were people who did not like the thought of people doing pleasurable activities
and enjoying themselves. Malvolio was a Puritan and so predictably did not believe in fun, so when at
the end the joke is revealed he has the response of I ll be revenged on the whole pack of you . Puritans

The Wedding Cake Model of the Criminal Jusice System

Myth v. Reality
Many people form opinions about the criminal justices system from the media. But how true are these
images of justice?
Developing the criminal justice system

first police agencies in the United States were in Boston (1838), New York (1844); and Philadelphia
(1854). Criminal justice system was first recognized in 1919, by the Chicago crime commission.

The criminal justice assembly line
Herbert Packer sees each stage of criminal justice process as a decision point through which cases
flow. Most criminals go undetected. If an offender is arrested, very few go to trial, get convicted and
sentenced to prison.
The informal criminal justice system
Introduction: While most people consider the system as an adversarial process, many cases are settled
in an informal pattern of cooperation between the major actors in the justice process. (The prosecutor,
defense attorney, judge, and other court personnel.)
The wedding cake model of justice Samuel Walker describes the informal criminal justice process as a
four layer cake.
Layer I involves celebrated cases (e.g. Lindsay Lohan and O.J. Simpson). Usually these cases receive
the full array of criminal justice procedures
Layer II involves serious felonies (e.g. rape, robbery, burglary). Here these offenders often receive a
full jury trial and if convicted, usually a prison sentence.
Layer III involves less serious felonies, offenses committed by young or first time offenders, or
involves offenders known to one another. These cases are usually dealt with plea bargain, reduction in
charges or probation.
Layer IV involves misdemeanors (e.g. shoplifting, public drunkenness, minor assault). This is the
bottom layer of the cake and the biggest. (Millions of case) Few defendants exercise their full

Blink 182 has released six albums over their nearly 25 year music career. The pop punk band, made up
of bassist/vocalist Mark Hoppus, drummer Travis Barker and former guitarist/vocalist Tom DeLonge,
hit it big in 1999 with their third album, Enema of the State, anchored by massive hits What s My Age
Again and All the Small Things. While these songs, along with fan favorites such as Dammit and Man
Overboard have been huge singles for the band, they have also released many other singles that are
just as worthy of attention. Here are six of Blink 182 s most underrated singles and why you should

Enema of the State s two other massive hit singles, What s My Age Again and All the Small Things.
But this song is so good in its own right. It deals with some serious issues, painting a vivid picture of
just what it is like to feel like you have nothing in your life worth coming home to. The way Mark
Hoppus tells this story in the first person just adds to the personal feel of the song. Furthermore, the
way his lyrics twist at the end to give a slight glimmer of hope is the perfect ending to what is mostly

Arius On The Status Of Christ-Theoristic
4.7 Arius (c.250 c.336) on the status of Christ Patristic
Arius disagrees with the incarnation of God. Arius insists that God is unchangeable.
Because the Father is regarded as existing before the Son, Arius believes that the Son is a creature.
Arius did rank the Son differently out of all other creatures. Arius regards the Son by saying, a perfect
creature, yet not as one among other creature; a begotten being, yet not as one among other begotten
beings. It is said that, the consequences of this viewpoint were critiqued by many at the time, and also
that his views were known, through the writings of his opponents.

The Portrayal of Differences in Pygmalion by Bernard Shaw...
Examine the portrayal of difference (e.g physical limitations, mental illness, race, class, or sexual
identity) in at least two literary works you have studied.
It can be noted that throughout both texts difference can be found portrayed in different ways. The
texts I will be focussing on are Pygmalion by Bernard Shaw and The Handmaids Tale by Margaret
Atwood. Whether it be the difference in class between Eliza Doolittle her father and her mentors Mr
Henry Higgins and Colonel Pickering or in the case of the Handmaids tale of Offred status in class in
comparison to the Commander and his wife. Difference can also be noticed by the different
occupations and titles denoted by people in the different texts such as doctor and commander . This
essay shall also explore how noticeable the differences are of Eliza, before she became a lady and how
the difference between the normal life and now the Gilead regime. Of the three questions offered I felt
that this one in particular stood out as having the most links between each other with the portrayal of
difference in both texts being noticeable.
The difference in class is particularly apparent in The Handmaids Tale in which people are denoted by
colours according to their rankings. In the case of Offred she is denoted by dressing all in red to
recognise her fertility and ripeness. However Offred also sees this as a connotation of blood,
sometimes being something of a life force for her, yet also associating it with violence and

A Model of Task Group Development in Complex Organizations and a strategy of Implementation J.
Stephen Heinen, Eugene Jacobson(1976) said More successful utilization of little gatherings or groups
in an association has been recommended as a method for expanding inspiration at work, through
promising more prominent association and self rule in choice making, and for adapting to the dynamic
complexities of hierarchical life. Hierarchical and mechanical clinicians have been keen on the
comprehension and use of little gathering procedures in associations from Hawthorne researches and

I feel group development is the one the important thing in organizations and building a team is always

In Flanders Field
I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its
stupidity, quoted Dwight D. Eisenhower. (Brainy Quote) War was and still is a serious event that is
only understandable to those who have experienced it first hand. World War l was a devastating battle
that caused boundless amounts of destruction, not only to countries and cities but to human s minds
and bodies. John McCrae was a man who experienced the inescapable effects of war and the damage it
caused to a person s sanity. His poem, In Flanders Field, is a written example of how devastating death
was and the reality that demise was inevitable, effecting bystanders for the rest of their life. Not only

The past generations had put every ounce of their efforts trying to improve the living conditions and
state of the world, losing their life in the process. The dead are trying to inspire the next soldiers and
generations to preserve the difference and improvements those who had died, created. Blood was
payed to make a change in the world, and it should not be put to waste. McCrae emphasizes the
importance of how humanity should value the sacrifices made and stop depreciating the freedoms that
had enormous costs. The idea of the dead talking and addressing the living adds an eerie and punching
atmosphere to the poem as well. The thought of the passed communicating and informing the next
soldiers is a bit unnerving and gets to someone s core. These men died for a reason. John McCrae uses
the poem to give a voice to the dead. He uses it in various ways, but specifically to call the next
generation to arms. He uses it to influence them and have them appreciate the blessing that the dead
had left for them. Those who died in battle worked hard to bring freedom and justice, and new adults
should take it for granted. They need to stand up, support their country, and safeguard the progress and
abilities they have. Those who have died in battle died for a reason.

Microbes And The Environment
Microbes And The Environment
When you pick up a handful of soil from outside you are not only picking up soil you are picking up a
handful of microbes. In that one handful there are many different varieties of living microbes, they
range from algae, fungi, bacteria and many more. A single teaspoon of that soil contains over
1,000,000,000 bacteria, about 120,000 fungi and 25,000 algae. (Microbe World) They are found
everywhere that you can think of on Earth, this includes the ground, air, plants and animals. Microbes
are one of the oldest living things on Earth they have been around for billion of years and continue to
live here under any conditions because they are constantly adapting to the environment that they live
in. These environments range from the boiling waters of hot springs in Yellowstone National Park to
the freezing temperatures of Antarctica. (Microbe World) The microbes that exist in our world are not
all bad they have many very helpful traits that can be observed every day .Microbes just like bacteria
and fungi break down complex pollutants into simpler substances to gain energy and nutrients by the
process called biodegradation. What biodegradation means is the chemical dissolution of materials by
bacteria or other biological means. Although often conflated, biodegradable is distinct in meaning
from compostable. (Biodegradation.) Microbes are found naturally in the world and they are also used
by humans for important reasons. For example they

My Best Friend Is My Friend
Everyone has a best friend. Most people have been through multiple best friends within their lifetime.
A best friend is your closest friend, someone to talk to, the first person you think about when you want
to do something, someone to help you with things and they are so much more than just those qualities.
In my case my best friend has helped me become a better person, helped me to understand certain
situations from a different point of view rather than just my own. She has taught me how to be nicer to
people, even people who are not nice to me. She is there for when I need her and I am there for her
when she needs me. It s what best friends do for each other. I believe that people have best friend
soulmates. And I have mine. My best friend, Natalie, has an incredible impact on my life. Natalie s
importance in my life is at a very high level. I don t know what I would do without her. We have only
been friends for a short period of time compared to my other close friends. We ve only been friends
for one year and ten months, although it feels like it has been centuries. I absolutely adore her. She is
one of my favorite people in my life. She has helped me through some of the worst times in my life
and I am so thankful for her friendship. I would do anything I possibly could to keep her happy. I
promised to love her, advise her, protect her and be there for her when she needs me. When most
people say best friends forever they hardly stay best friends forever. But when I

was gaining massive productions, such as Iron Man 3 and Homeland . This all changed in 2014 when
state legislators chose to mostly abandon their tax credit program in lieu of using the money to lower
their corporate tax rates. Their film industry crashed almost overnight. Nearly all film productions
went to surrounding states like Louisiana and Georgia, leaving North Carolina filmless. There have
been efforts to rejuvenate the film industry, such as a 10 million film grant passed in 2015, however,
many fear the damage is irreparable. Lowering the corporate tax rates, though a great idea in of itself,

The Pittsburgh Courier gives a great example of why this is. Think of it like this, if you had a coupon
for 10 dollars worth of free food (this would be the tax credit) and then sold that coupon for 8 dollars
of actual money. Because you saw the 8 dollars as more valuable than the 10 dollars worth of free
food (since the coupon/tax credit isn t actual money, there is a loss of 2 dollars of value. Over time,
this has led to around 27 million dollars in tax payer s dollars to be lost, however, this number doesn t
mean tax credits shouldn t be sellable (Shoemaker; Holmberg).
As a matter of fact, they must be and it s in their nature. Lisa Smith Reed, when I asked her about the
selling of tax credits, stated, Every industry sells tax credits that they cannot use to other companies
whether or not that company is in their particular line of business. It s incredibly difficult to use the
entirety of a Pennsylvania tax credit when the film company awarded the credit resides in a different
state. In a way, the ability to sell the tax credit is more of an incentive to productions than the tax
credit itself. Dawn Keezer, in an interview with public source, went as far to say that the selling of
these tax credits is a boon, because not only does it bring productions to Pennsylvania, it also helps
corporations in Pennsylvania on their taxes, and since all these companies (whether it is the film

Switzerland s health care system follows the Bismarck Model in terms of sickness funds. It is financed
through contributions of the individual to the insurance company rather than through tax or
employment based contributions.16 This keeps tax percentages down and allows for more equality in

social solidarity, meaning that the government is responsible in giving all social services to their

Persuasive Speech On Alien Invades
Have you ever read or watched a movie where aliens attack and invade and take over the world? If
you like that well then you should know that it s real. Not real in the way that there are actual aliens
but species are acting like aliens which means they are invasive. If we don t help solve the problem
then who else will? We are the only ones who can solve the problem. An example of an invasive
species taking over are alien invasions. In any alien invasion movie or book aliens come to a planet
invade it and try to take it over. That is pretty much what invasive species do. But instead of killing or
fighting for an area, they breed and eventually overpopulate that area which then pushes away other
species to live. This causes many native species to either go extinct or leave that area. This is exactly

We need to stop this invasion but why exactly should we stop this? If we don t make a change many
species will die. This will not be easy, and it will take many resources. So if we wait long enough
nature could just sort itself out. But that will take a long time and is very risky.
Though doing nothing about the invasion is easy and less resourceful it has many problems. If we do
nothing we are putting many species existence at stake and it would also be sad to not fix a problem
we have created. Also doing nothing could possibly not work and instead help the starlings grow and

The individual and the group, can their ability to either coexist or be at odds with each other? As in
many famous or popular novels and films of out time, the individuals and the groups are considered as
the forefront of each story. No matter what types they are, the individuals and the groups is more or

When every character in this novel uses more pronouns referring to oneself, the individual character

let me get confused at the beginning when I was reading. However, related to the opinions about the
relationship between the individuals and the groups getting themselves expressed in the book make
the subject of the theme clear to me eventually.
Anthem draws heavily on the historical record of twentieth century. The collectivist society described
in the book is called Equality 7 2521. This collectivist society is the place where is similar to the Nazi.
This society makes lots of restrictions that forbid people to have their individually thoughts.
Moreover, people are forbidden to think freely. All of them have to act in unquestioning obedience to
the orders of the society.
The author of Anthem addresses that collectivism refers to the subjugation of the individual to the
group . And it is not necessary to understand what the group is. It could be a certain class, a race or
country and so forth. In this context, each people are not considered as an autonomous individual with
his or her own life. Instead, they are treated as a component of the group whose sole purpose is to
obey and serve this group.

Uses and gratification theory is a theories that concentrate on what people do with the media and what

suppose that because individuals have the right to use the media, not passive consumers who position
themselves as media. Uses and gratification theory to explore how individuals purposely look for

Cognition means a process of learning. Individuals will uses a cognitive way to obtain information

The Characters Of Socrates And The Greatest Evils
Socrates believes that he is an individual who had the potential to accomplish extraordinary feats due
to his unique set of traits. He claims, If they were of any use, Crito, the many would be able to do the
greatest evils, and so they would also be able to do the greatest goods, and that would be fine. But as it
is they can do neither, since they cannot make a man either wise or foolish (Crito, 44d). Only certain
people have the capacity to complete enormous feats, and those people are not average citizens of the
state. Instead, they must have qualities that set them apart from the rest of the population.
Furthermore, it is reputed at least that Socrates is distinguished from the many human beings in some
way (The Apology, 34e). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One area where Socrates is very open about what he doesn t know is death. Since, no one knows
whether death does not even happen to be the greatest of all goods for the human being; but people
fear it as though they knew well that it is the greatest of evils (The Apology, 29a). Socrates is
emphasizing that people make assumptions about specific aspects of death, but those people don t
actually know what death is like. The majority of people are content to fear death even though there is
the possibility that death could be the greatest experience that humans have. Socrates openly claims
that he doesn t know what death is like, but the wise men say that death is to be feared. Socrates
challenges the beliefs of the many again, we must not pay much heed to what the many will say to us,
but to what the one who knows about just and unjust things will say (Crito, 48a), It is important to
ignore what the majority of people say, and to listen to the person who has a better understanding of
justice than oneself as that person possesses more knowledge about the topic than the majority of the
people. Socrates belief about extraordinary individuals holds true for people in the more recent
history. Adolf Hitler is an example of an extraordinary individual who used their outstanding qualities
for evil purposes. Hitler rose to power legally and without seizing it himself. Instead he manipulated
President Hindenburg into handing power over. Hitler was a very intelligent

from the primitive, as produced by the first peoples of the Earth, to contemporary photography. These

Let us trace the way to I Modi. While one could begin this story with a look all the way back to so
called primitive art which often reflected an interest in human sexuality, if only based on concerns
about fertility it may be more appropriate to begin with a culture whose traditions have been clearly
identified as having found their way into the ancient Roman psyche. That is, the culture of ancient
Egypt. An example of this interest in human sexuality, and an expression of it in art, is Min, the
Egyptian god of male fertility. Representing masculine virility, Min was usually portrayed with an
erect penis, which he typically grasped in his left hand. As the ancient Romans were connected to
certain areas of what is now known as Egypt, and as it has been shown that they adopted the worship
of the Egyptian goddess Isis sometime in the first century BC, it may be reasonable to assume that
they were familiar with such gods as Min, and may have even discovered some of these
aforementioned depictions. As one continues to trace the history of sexuality and the erotic image
leading up to the production of Giulio Romano s I Modi, a logical stop along the journey would be
ancient Greece. As time and space limit the scope of this analysis, direct examples from the art and
culture of this region will not be examined. However, the contribution of the Greeks to the art,

symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and often fled during war which led to most of them

The Size Of An Organism
AC 2.1
1) When the size of an organism increases its surface area also increases.
2) When the size of an organism increases its volume also increases.
3) As the size of an organism increases both its surface area and volume increase however the surface
area to volume ratio decreases. This is because the volume increases at a greater rate than the surface
area. Organisms with a smaller surface area to volume ratio can exchange substance more easily
compared with bigger organisms, which require more specialised systems. Having a large surface are
to volume ratio enables the organism to heat up more quickly however they do not retain the heat
compared with organisms with a small surface area.
4) Bacteria and Amoeba
Small organisms such as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bacteria have adapted to digest large micro nutrients by secreting enzymes that break down micro
nutrients, for example the enzymes break down proteins into amino acids so that they can be absorbed
into the cell.
Amoebas are larger than bacteria and are approximately 100µm in diameter but still have a relatively
large surface area to volume ratio. Amoebas, unlike bacteria, do not secrete enzymes externally to
digest food, instead they extend their cytoplasm and around the nutrients and then break it down
within the cell. Figure 1 shows the nutrition of an amoeba. Figure 1
Microorganisms can heat up quickly but cannot retain heat well compared with larger organisms. This
is because they have large surface area to volume ratio, so heat escapes easily.
Flies
Larger organisms have adapted to overcome limitations what occur in more simpler organisms, by
developing more complex systems to exchange substances and retain heat. Multicellular organisms
rely on many different cells that are specialised to perform different tasks, however they all work
together in order for the organism to function. When cells are produced they have the potential to
specialise as any type of cell for example a nerve cell or tissue cell depending on the requirements of
the organism. This process is called cell differentiation and enables organisms to have more complex
systems.

Importance Of The Fourth Amendment
The fourth amendment was created to protect the individual rights form governmental intrusion. The
fourth amendment protects the right of the people to be secure against unreasonable searches and

established on December 15, 1791 during the colonial era. When the 4th Amendment became part of
the Constitution, it was originally only applied to the federal government. Then it was applied to the

To understand this situation I decided to look up cases that reflect on their fourth amendment being
violated. The case that stood out to me the most was Mapp vs. Ohio. In 1957, police officers received
an anonymous tip that Mapp was hiding a wanted man because he needed to be questioned for a
bombing. Then Police officers went to Mapp s house and wanted to search her house. She then denied
them entry, because she needed to see a warrant to let them in. After some hours went by, the police
officers forcibly entered her home and recalled that they received a warrant. Then they proceeded with
the search and found some books, pictures, and photographs in violation of 2905.34 of Ohio s Revised
Code. Then during her court trial she appealed her sentence, because they did not receive a valid
search warrant and the police officers violated her rights. Even though they found her having
possessions that were illegal, they could not hold it against her. The issues with search and seizure are
usually towards the issue of violating our rights. One of the rights that we are getting violated is the
right if privacy. It is the interest in being free from observation that matters to us, because they always
try to know what people are saying and or doing without probable cause. Another way that this is an
issue is because of the technology that is being used to observe and survey us. One of the technologies
being used is a drone. Drones are an aircraft

Queer Representation Of All Ages Media Essay
Queer Representation in All Ages Media Growing up as a Catholic, Puerto Rican gay boy in the 90s
and early 2000s, I struggled to discover my queer identity as well as queer representation in the media
I consumed. Being gay was something that was never discussed. If it was brought up, it was usually in
hushed tones (I remember being introduced to my uncle s close friend each holiday) or as something
negative (I still remember the sting of being called a faggot in elementary school). This reflected
exactly how homosexuality was portrayed in media at the time. Queer characters and homosexuality
were at best portrayed in codified, blink and you ll miss it labels and affectations, or at worst,
something to laugh at, pity or even hate. As someone who still regularly watches reads comics,
watches Saturday morning cartoons and plays video games, it is so exciting to discover the lengths of
progress that has been made in queer representation in all ages media. In this paper I hope to detail the
highs and lows of LGBTQ representation in all ages media and highlight the impact of media
representation. Before celebrating the strides of queer representation in all ages media, it is important
to look back at queer representation in the past. The late film scholar Vito Russo painstakingly

crowed. If you go take some time look at the pictures that they have hanging up around the restaurant.
Cortez is about a 20 minute drive from the entrance to Mesa Verde National Park. We had a 9:00 a.m.
tour that left from Far View Lodge. We read that we needed to arrive really early because traffic in the
park was bad. The lodge was about 30 minutes inside the park. There was no traffic that early in the
morning, so we got there early. We had time to look around the gift shop and look out at the Far View
the lodge is named after. If you have a tour this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I highly recommend this tour because we got a lot more information on the park than we would ve
gotten if would have driven around the park ourselves. With the 700 years tour we got to take a bus
around the park with a very knowledgeable guide. We got to stop a different kevias and learned how
they were built. We also got to go down into Cliff Palace. This is a ranger led program. Our guide was
from Tennessee, but he knew so much information about Mesa Verde and Cliff Palace. I recommend
touring Cliff Palace and the rest of Mesa Verde during the morning if you re visiting during the
summer. We toured Cliff Palace at 10:30 and it was complete shade. Cliff Palace is not a hike that you
need to take if you have heart, hip, knee, or shoulder problems. This hike requires climbing down
steep stairs and climbing ladders. There is one short ladder before you get to Cliff Palace, and then
there is a very long ladder when you leave Cliff Palace. Bring water when you come to Mesa Verde,
even in the morning. Also be mindful of altitude changes. Cliff Palace is located at a 7,000 foot
attitude. My house in Tennessee is located at 440 feet. So it s easy to get winded even if you re not
really doing that

The Louis Vuitton Speedy Bag Essay
1. The Louis Vuitton Speedy Bag is constructed by its famous Monogram Canvas. The monogram
canvas contains the famous LV design. An often misconception about the Speedy bag is that the bag
itself is derived from cotton and is not actually leather, it is just manufactured to feel as though it is.
However, the handles, stamp on the front, and pulls anywhere else on the bag are in fact leather. The
bags are water resistant, durable and easy to clean. They come in four different sizes; 25, 30, 35, 40.
The speedy bag is an iconic piece from all Louis Vuitton Collections. The bag originated from Paris as
that is where Louis Vuitton himself is from. The size 25 Speedy bag is priced at $950, the 30 at $970,
the 35 at $990 and the 40 at $1,010 (Louis Vuitton). The Speedy itself comes in three different colors,
the original LV Monogram Canvas, the Damier Ebene Canvas, and the Damier Azur Canvas. This
item can be bought in any Louis Vuitton retailer including online. The Speedy bag can also be bought
in the following department stores, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Barney s,
Bloomingdales, and many other high end department retailers.
2. A. The demographics for Louis Vuitton are older customers in a wealthier working class. They
target both men and women with a high disposable income, and are well professionals in their
everyday life (the retailer). What is interesting about the demographics for Louis Vuitton, is that there
was a case study done that

He has changed to drink everyday which leads him to deny Marions cocktail offer. This astonishes
Marion but she hopes that Charlie will stick to that character. In this paragraph we see that Charlie has
become responsible enough compared to olden days when he used to squander a lot of money. Charlie
is showing much love to her daughter that he is determined give her anything she wishes for that day.
He offers to take her to vaudeville and later on to the toy store. Her daughter seems to understand the
financial situation they were in and considers only going to the vaudeville. Charlie was strict in the
past but now he reached for new tolerance because he has to be the mother and father of her daughter.
Charlie indulges her daughter in bonding conversations. Charlie s main mission was to reclaim the
possession of her daughter who also wanted to stay with her dad too. They met with Lincoln and
Marion to discuss over the issue although Marion was hesitant about the idea. Charlie explain to her

Analysis Of Edgar Allan Poe s The Imp Of The Perverse
Mariana Falossi
Professor O Brien
LTEN 176
November 8 2017
The Imp of the Perverse American writer and critique Edgar Allan Poe is very well known for his
gothic tales of mystery, suspense, and horror. While his impressive collection of work carry thrilling
themes of fear, death, and tragedy, Poe s work goes beyond the purpose of literary entertainment and
revealing his own inner demons. His writing may be heavily influenced by his own dark and tragic
experiences and losses, but it also reveals unique characteristics of the disturbing nature of all people
in general. One of these characteristics is explained in his short murderous tale The Imp of the
Perverse. This tale explains how a significant part of human nature is driven by ... Show more content

In the consideration of the faculties and impulses of the prima mobilia of the human soul, the
phrenologists have failed to make room for a propensity which, although obviously existing as a
radical, primitive, irreducible sentiment, has been equally overlooked by all the moralists who have
preceded them (____) The narrator explains how this is a failure which leaves room for error, and
believes that root of impulsive behavior leading people to experience perversion for example is prima
mobilia, which is in fact a part of the soul. He defines perversion as the impulse of doing something
counterintuitive to to self help. Overall the idea of acting on impulse was not being studied and
ignored. The narrator feels strongly that people should study and understand all sides of man, and
especially the perverse side. He believes that the way men live should be based on nature rather than
how they should be living. This is not to say that men should commit murder, rather simply
understand what they are capable of and to explain the natural desire to do so. It would have been
wiser, it would have been safer, to classify (if classify we must) upon the basis of what man usually or
occasionally did, and was always occasionally doing, rather than upon the basis of what we took it for
granted the Deity intended him to do)____)

Yoga and the Mind
Conquer the mind and you can conquer anything. That is a popular saying amongst Yogis (yoga
instructors) very few people recognize the truth and meaning behind this statement. There is a clear
connection between the health benefits associated with yoga having to do with the body, power
strength, balance, flexibility. Few people are aware of the multiple benefits it can serve for the brain
and mind as well. Is there a clear benefit and connection between mind and body when practicing
yoga? Yoga can supposedly improve depressive symptoms and immune function, as well as decrease
chronic pain, reduces stress, and lower blood pressure. These claims have all been made by yogis over
the years, and it sounds like a lot of new age foolishness. Surprisingly, however, everything in that list
is supported by scientific research. (psychologytoday.com) The main struggle in yoga is to overcome
the challenge, each pose is challenging, and your goal is to breathe and remain calm throughout the
struggle and to find your inner peace and keep going. This is a strong concept to conquer; the mind of
course often does whatever it wants. The true gain one finds is when one does overcome the struggle;
it is the process where one benefits. Studies have shown a correlation between yoga and how one
handles stress. Yoga retrains your brain in how it reacts to the automatic stress response.( Korb) When
the body first senses stress, the first reaction is to quit and to become tense and

Federalist And Dual Federalism
The United States under the Articles of Confederation had a Federalist nation in its truest and basest
sense. Originally, the Articles united the separate states together under an extremely weak central
Congress with few powers. That left most of the powers of government with the states, which caused
many problems in terms of regulation and protection of rights and liberties. Most states had different
currencies, taxes, protections of rights (in the individual state constitutions), and other policies that
made it difficult for the states to coexist, however, with the power in the individual states, most policy
more closely reflected the peoples of the region. When it became clear that the Articles of
Confederation were no longer working ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They also argued that the federal courts would be too far away from the average citizen to provide
justice, something they extended to the other federal branches of government as well. When debating
the content of the Constitution, Anti Federalists called for a clearer articulation of the rights of the
people and government, which brought about more compromises and content in the ratified
Constitution. Delaware was the first state who voted, unanimously, to ratify the Constitution on
December 7, 1787 and Rhode Island was the last state to ratify it almost three years later on May 29,
1790 (archives.gov, 2016). The document was able to go into effect earlier because ratification only
required nine votes for it from the states, which only took 10 months through New Hampshire
(archives.gov, 2016). Many states who approved ratification later did so under the requirement that the
Framers added a declaration of rights to the Constitution. Throughout the ratification process, before
the first state even ratified the Constitution and through 1790, several people wrote The Federalist
Papers under the pseudonym Publius. They were a collection of papers supporting the ratification of
the new Constitution and the formation of a more democratic republic. Federalist Paper #10 was
written by James Madison in 1787 and contains one of the best arguments for the formation of the

  • 2. Drake Equation Research Paper The Drake Equation is used to estimate of the rate at which stars are born in the galaxy, the fraction of stars with planets, and the fraction of those planets on which life could originate, and so on. Although, by those calculations, there should be about 10,000 civilizations in our galaxy capable of interstellar communication. So, where are all the aliens? Extraterrestrial intelligence must exist somewhere in the universe, but we might not be able to communicate with each other because of complications such as different forms of communication, huge distances between each other, and/or they don t want to talk back. In today s society, programs backed by private sources of funding (nonprofit), such as SETI (Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence), ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It s reasonable to assume that how we re trying to communicate with possible extraterrestrial intelligence may not be how they communicate, resulting in us believing no one is listening. It is possible that our means of communication are primitive in comparison, and that our logic may be vastly different than theirs. For example, if you were to send morse code in the hopes of someone responding, it s mostly that no one is going to respond, let alone even notice it. Secondly, we may have not been looking in the right places either. A prime reason for this is that we really don t know where to look in the first place. We have ideas, but nothing concrete whatsoever. Another reason may just be that we haven t had enough time yet, as we can only send messages so quickly, in so many different directions to cover a possible infinite space across the ... Iraq Human Rights Violations In 1948 the United Nations established the United Declaration of Human Rights(UDHR). 70 years later many countries continue to abridge these rules and deny the people the rights they deserve. For over a year now Iraq has been denying its residents rights when pertaining to the court of law. It is understandable that the Iraqi Government does not want other countries interfering with how they handle their issues, but innocents, and wrongly convicted individuals, are being punished for things they didn t do. Iraq s 10 minute trials are unjust and a violation of the people s human rights. Trials being short and mainly directed towards foreigners, many of the more serious crimes are not being noticed. Margaret Coker explains, What concerns me the most in these trials is that the system is fundamentally prejudiced against foreign individuals... you are foreign, and you were in ISIS territory, there is no need to provide more evidence (Coker, Para. 27). This is a violation of Article 2 of the UDHR, which states that no one can have their basic human rights taken away due to race, sex, or cultural origin. Other than cultural origin, race also been a determining factor in the trials. In this case the judge decided to hear what the people had to say due to them looking European or American. The judge let the group of Russians free instead of being sentenced to death like all of the others. • 5. Discourse On Livy Niccolò Machiavelli is very well known as an important and influential Italian historian, politician, philosopher, and writer during the Renaissance. His book, Discourses on Livy, is a discussion regarding the classical history of early Ancient Rome, although it uses contemporary political examples and strays far away from the subject of Rome at times. It is presented as a series of lessons on how a republic should be started and structured. Most importantly, it constantly brings up the idea of corruption and corrupt people, which is not surprising because we all desire things and search for the simplest way to obtain it, even though the easiest way to obtain something might be a corrupt way. When Machiavelli uses the term corrupt or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It seems more difficult to change the regime. This is the source of corruption. When one class of society strives to better themselves and succeed in doing so, it causes corruption. Machiavelli spends a chunk of Discourses on Livy discussing how states are corrupt and the citizens within them are corrupt as well. The first important point he makes when it comes to corruption is that men do not know how to be entirely good or bad. He claims, they concluded that men clearly do not know how to be honourably bad or perfectly good, and that when an evil deed contains in itself some grandeur or some generosity, they do not know how to carry it out (Machiavelli 82). Thus, Machiavelli is elaborating on the theme of good and bad and how even those who are good and are not considered corrupt still make bad decisions sometimes. Generally, men decide on a middle course, instead of choosing a completely good or bad course. This decision is seen as most hazardous because it is hard to claim someone is good if they do not make entirely good decisions and it is hard to claim someone is bad if they do not make entirely bad decisions. The second important point Machiavelli makes is that men are easily corrupted and even those who are good can easily turn bad. He states, It should also be noted, in this matter or the decemvirate, how easily men may be corrupted and how they may transform themselves and give ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Lying in bed in the middle of the night while sleep eludes me, a noise breaks through the silence. Oh my God! What was that!? Maybe it was just my imagination, or maybe it was just the house settling. There it is again! I must be hearing things. I get cold and my body starts to shiver uncontrollably. I peek to where the sound comes from and I could swear I see something through the dark room; it appears even darker than the surrounding area. Oh my! I think it just moved. The belief in Doppelgangers and poltergeist has also crossed the ocean over to the U.S. Many people still report poltergeist activity in their homes. Another example of a cultures belief in ghosts is Ireland s and Scotland s (also known as the Celt s) belief in Samhain or All Hallow s Eve. Samhain is a festival that is celebrated from October 31st to November 2nd. Samhain is a time of the year that celebrates the last harvest before the winter comes, and is dedicated to the Lord of the Dead (Guiley 19). The Celt s believe that the dead will come out of their final resting place and mess with the crops. Also, it is believed that communication with the dead is easier during Samhain. It is said that the veil that separates the living from the dead is at its thinnest during this time. The Lord of the Dead holds a sentencing of spirits, where if they were good they can exist in the form of a human, and if they were bad, the form of an animal. Offerings of food and drink are made to the Lord of the Dead so he would not be so severe in his sentencing. Many Celt s would dress up on Samhain to confuse the spirits that were roaming around so they wouldn t stop, but continue to pass them by (Guiley 19). • 7. Project Delivery Methods For Distinct Allocation Of Risk... Project delivery methods allow for distinct allocation of risk and responsibilities within a construction contract. Each unique construction project calls for a defined delivery method and a written contract in order to ensure the success of the venture. A project delivery option is defined as a method for procurement which the owner s assignment of delivery risk and performance for design and construction has been transferred to another party (Mahdi 564). After a legal and appropriate contract is signed, contractual privity exists which allows the contracting parties to hold each other responsible for their actions. The design bid build delivery method is often referred to the traditional method of contractual relationships in the construction industry. This method allows the owner to select a design professional based off of the quality of their work, whereas the selection of the construction manager is based off competitive bids submitted after the completion of the design. The traditional method may be viewed as the tried and true system of creating successful contractual relationships, but the evolution of the industry has called for this method to take on different forms. One such form is the construction manager at risk (CMR) method, which allows for collaboration between the owner, designer, and construction manager during the early stages of the design process and continues throughout the life of the construction project. Kennedy, an event that occurred more than fifty years ago, is still being collected and examined by an array of scientists, professional historians, and conspiracy theorists. Periodically, with continuous developments and improvements in technology, new information is being discovered that either relates to an existing theory about the assassination or inspires additional assumptions about the identity and location of another supposed shooter. He feels as if he must make meaning out of all the material in his possession and so, because he does not know how to accomplish this, he remains perpetually immobile in his attempt to uncover and write the true history of the assassination. It is impossible for him to account for every detail, fact, and occurrence linked to Kennedy s assassination because there is already too much information for him to examine and much that has yet to be discovered. Christopher M. Mott, in his essay Libra and the Subject of History , comments on Branch s need for absolute closure and the chaotic results that arise: The novel implies that the version of the world that informs our government s practices and dominates our episteme intends to account for every detail of existence. It employs a totalizing discourse, a discourse of rational examination and explanation. Libra clearly indicates that this penchant for total explanation leads, in fact, to total chaos. We simply cannot account for every detail, every nuance. (143) Branch s desire to piece together the factual events of the assassination has led to his abandonment of life. He will forever be confined to his, as DeLillo describes, room of theories (57) since he must study everything about the event. However, the CIA is constantly supplying him ... Cesario is actually shipwrecked Viola who, believing her brother has drowned, dresses up as a man to work for Orsino. Viola consequently falls in love with Orsino who believes her to be Cesario. Feste, as usual, realises before the other characters that the joke has gone too far and loses interest in it, I would we were well rid of this knavery On the other hand I believe that Malvolio did deserve some of the punishment that he was subjected to simply because of his pompous and arrogant personality. Malvolio was a puritan and that is why his behaviour is so contrasting to that of all the other characters in this play, Dost thou think, because thou art virtuous, there shall be no more cakes and ale? When Shakespeare wrote Twelfth Night in 1623 it was essentially ahead of its time because the Malvolio based sub plot foreshadowed the conflict of the Civil War in the next century. I believe that the opinions of the Puritans in general are expressed through Malvolio in the course of this play. Puritans on the whole were people who did not like the thought of people doing pleasurable activities and enjoying themselves. There is a section of the U.S. literally nicknamed Tornado Alley in the Midwest due to its likelihood over other parts to be hit with tornadoes. Examine the portrayal of difference (e.g physical limitations, mental illness, race, class, or sexual identity) in at least two literary works you have studied. It can be noted that throughout both texts difference can be found portrayed in different ways. The texts I will be focussing on are Pygmalion by Bernard Shaw and The Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood. Whether it be the difference in class between Eliza Doolittle her father and her mentors Mr Henry Higgins and Colonel Pickering or in the case of the Handmaids tale of Offred status in class in comparison to the Commander and his wife. Difference can also be noticed by the different occupations and titles denoted by people in the different texts such as doctor and commander . This essay shall also explore how noticeable the differences are of Eliza, before she became a lady and how the difference between the normal life and now the Gilead regime. Of the three questions offered I felt that this one in particular stood out as having the most links between each other with the portrayal of difference in both texts being noticeable. The difference in class is particularly apparent in The Handmaids Tale in which people are denoted by colours according to their rankings. In the case of Offred she is denoted by dressing all in red to recognise her fertility and ripeness. That is, the culture of ancient Egypt. An example of this interest in human sexuality, and an expression of it in art, is Min, the Egyptian god of male fertility. Representing masculine virility, Min was usually portrayed with an erect penis, which he typically grasped in his left hand. As the ancient Romans were connected to certain areas of what is now known as Egypt, and as it has been shown that they adopted the worship of the Egyptian goddess Isis sometime in the first century BC, it may be reasonable to assume that they were familiar with such gods as Min, and may have even discovered some of these aforementioned depictions. Then Police officers went to Mapp s house and wanted to search her house. She then denied them entry, because she needed to see a warrant to let them in. After some hours went by, the police officers forcibly entered her home and recalled that they received a warrant. Then they proceeded with the search and found some books, pictures, and photographs in violation of 2905.34 of Ohio s Revised Code. Then during her court trial she appealed her sentence, because they did not receive a valid search warrant and the police officers violated her rights. Even though they found her having possessions that were illegal, they could not hold it against her. The issues with search and seizure are usually towards the issue of violating our rights. One of the rights that we are getting violated is the right if privacy. It is the interest in being free from observation that matters to us, because they always try to know what people are saying and or doing without probable cause. Another way that this is an issue is because of the technology that is being used to observe and survey us. One of the technologies being used is a drone. Drones are an aircraft ... • 37. Jules Verne s 20, 000 Leagues Under The Sea Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, written by the best selling author Jules Verne, is an enthralling undersea adventure that begins when a mysterious oblong, occasionally phosphorescent thing , larger and infinitely faster than a whale, begins attacking boats. The famous oceanographer Professor Pierre Aronnax is invited aboard the Abraham Lincoln to hunt down what he believes to be a giant narwhal, but once they find it, even the superior war boat is no match for this strange creature. Professor Aronnax and his trusty servant Council are thrown overboard and end up on the deck of an oblong, occasionally phosphorescent submarine with their acquaintance Ned Land, a Canadian Harpooner. They are then hostilely brought aboard and told by Captain Nemo that they are never allowed to leave the Nautilus, the boat our three travelers happened upon. After this depressing news, they are offered the opportunity to travel the world underwater and experience wonders only the captain himself has ever seen, which they promptly accept. ... • 38. Queer Representation Of All Ages Media Essay Queer Representation in All Ages Media Growing up as a Catholic, Puerto Rican gay boy in the 90s and early 2000s, I struggled to discover my queer identity as well as queer representation in the media I consumed. Being gay was something that was never discussed. If it was brought up, it was usually in hushed tones (I remember being introduced to my uncle s close friend each holiday) or as something negative (I still remember the sting of being called a faggot in elementary school). This reflected exactly how homosexuality was portrayed in media at the time. Queer characters and homosexuality were at best portrayed in codified, blink and you ll miss it labels and affectations, or at worst, something to laugh at, pity or even hate. As someone who still regularly watches reads comics, watches Saturday morning cartoons and plays video games, it is so exciting to discover the lengths of progress that has been made in queer representation in all ages media. In this paper I hope to detail the highs and lows of LGBTQ representation in all ages media and highlight the impact of media representation. Before celebrating the strides of queer representation in all ages media, it is important to look back at queer representation in the past. The late film scholar Vito Russo painstakingly researched the evolution of queer representation in cinema in his landmark book The Celluloid Closet. In both the book and the documentary based of the book, Russo details the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The food was really good and it wasn t crowed. If you go take some time look at the pictures that they have hanging up around the restaurant. Cortez is about a 20 minute drive from the entrance to Mesa Verde National Park. We had a 9:00 a.m. tour that left from Far View Lodge. We read that we needed to arrive really early because traffic in the park was bad. The lodge was about 30 minutes inside the park. There was no traffic that early in the morning, so we got there early. We had time to look around the gift shop and look out at the Far View the lodge is named after. If you have a tour this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I highly recommend this tour because we got a lot more information on the park than we would ve gotten if would have driven around the park ourselves. With the 700 years tour we got to take a bus around the park with a very knowledgeable guide. We got to stop a different kevias and learned how they were built. We also got to go down into Cliff Palace. This is a ranger led program. Our guide was from Tennessee, but he knew so much information about Mesa Verde and Cliff Palace. I recommend touring Cliff Palace and the rest of Mesa Verde during the morning if you re visiting during the summer. We toured Cliff Palace at 10:30 and it was complete shade. Cliff Palace is not a hike that you need to take if you have heart, hip, knee, or shoulder problems. This hike requires climbing down steep stairs and climbing ladders. There is one short ladder before you get to Cliff Palace, and then there is a very long ladder when you leave Cliff Palace. Bring water when you come to Mesa Verde, even in the morning. Also be mindful of altitude changes. Cliff Palace is located at a 7,000 foot attitude. My house in Tennessee is located at 440 feet. • 43. Analysis Of Edgar Allan Poe s The Imp Of The Perverse Mariana Falossi Professor O Brien LTEN 176 November 8 2017 The Imp of the Perverse American writer and critique Edgar Allan Poe is very well known for his gothic tales of mystery, suspense, and horror. While his impressive collection of work carry thrilling themes of fear, death, and tragedy, Poe s work goes beyond the purpose of literary entertainment and revealing his own inner demons. His writing may be heavily influenced by his own dark and tragic experiences and losses, but it also reveals unique characteristics of the disturbing nature of all people in general. One of these characteristics is explained in his short murderous tale The Imp of the Perverse. This tale explains how a significant part of human nature is driven by ... In the consideration of the faculties and impulses of the prima mobilia of the human soul, the phrenologists have failed to make room for a propensity which, although obviously existing as a radical, primitive, irreducible sentiment, has been equally overlooked by all the moralists who have preceded them (____) The narrator explains how this is a failure which leaves room for error, and believes that root of impulsive behavior leading people to experience perversion for example is prima mobilia, which is in fact a part of the soul. He defines perversion as the impulse of doing something counterintuitive to to self help. Overall the idea of acting on impulse was not being studied and ignored. The narrator feels strongly that people should study and understand all sides of man, and especially the perverse side. He believes that the way men live should be based on nature rather than how they should be living. This is not to say that men should commit murder, rather simply understand what they are capable of and to explain the natural desire to do so. It would have been wiser, it would have been safer, to classify (if classify we must) upon the basis of what man usually or occasionally did, and was always occasionally doing, rather than upon the basis of what we took it for granted the Deity intended him to do)____) Idealistically people ... • 44. Yoga and the Mind Conquer the mind and you can conquer anything. That is a popular saying amongst Yogis (yoga instructors) very few people recognize the truth and meaning behind this statement. There is a clear connection between the health benefits associated with yoga having to do with the body, power strength, balance, flexibility. Few people are aware of the multiple benefits it can serve for the brain and mind as well. Is there a clear benefit and connection between mind and body when practicing yoga? Yoga can supposedly improve depressive symptoms and immune function, as well as decrease chronic pain, reduces stress, and lower blood pressure. These claims have all been made by yogis over the years, and it sounds like a lot of new age foolishness. Surprisingly, however, everything in that list is supported by scientific research. (psychologytoday.com) The main struggle in yoga is to overcome the challenge, each pose is challenging, and your goal is to breathe and remain calm throughout the struggle and to find your inner peace and keep going. This is a strong concept to conquer; the mind of course often does whatever it wants. The true gain one finds is when one does overcome the struggle; it is the process where one benefits. Studies have shown a correlation between yoga and how one handles stress. Yoga retrains your brain in how it reacts to the automatic stress response.( Korb) When the body first senses stress, the first reaction is to quit and to become tense and ... • 45. Federalist And Dual Federalism The United States under the Articles of Confederation had a Federalist nation in its truest and basest sense. Originally, the Articles united the separate states together under an extremely weak central Congress with few powers. That left most of the powers of government with the states, which caused many problems in terms of regulation and protection of rights and liberties. Most states had different currencies, taxes, protections of rights (in the individual state constitutions), and other policies that made it difficult for the states to coexist, however, with the power in the individual states, most policy more closely reflected the peoples of the region. They also argued that the federal courts would be too far away from the average citizen to provide justice, something they extended to the other federal branches of government as well. When debating the content of the Constitution, Anti Federalists called for a clearer articulation of the rights of the people and government, which brought about more compromises and content in the ratified Constitution. Delaware was the first state who voted, unanimously, to ratify the Constitution on December 7, 1787 and Rhode Island was the last state to ratify it almost three years later on May 29, 1790 (archives.gov, 2016). The document was able to go into effect earlier because ratification only required nine votes for it from the states, which only took 10 months through New Hampshire (archives.gov, 2016). Many states who approved ratification later did so under the requirement that the Framers added a declaration of rights to the Constitution. Throughout the ratification process, before the first state even ratified the Constitution and through 1790, several people wrote The Federalist Papers under the pseudonym Publius. They were a collection of papers supporting the ratification of the new Constitution and the formation of a more democratic republic.
