Early American Indian Pottery History
Introduction Ceramic making is still a popular tradition today in the Americas, especially on Native
Indian Reservations, like in Western, North Carolina. The use of ceramics, however, is quite different
than the way it was used by the natives during the Middle Woodland Period. Today, pottery is mainly
made for decoration or art purposes by modern day Americans, but according to Wallis (2011), about
3,000 years ago the use of pottery became a very common use and practiced tradition among the
native people who lived during that time period. The Swift Creek culture and the Cherokee Indians
had very similar methods in formulating ceramics. The archaeological findings of these artifacts states
that one group had been more advanced designs on their vessels. This reason is most likely because of
the materials that one group was able to access in their area that the other group did not have
available. One group was also more traditional and spiritual in making their vessels, which caused
them to create more complex designs and methods while designing their ceramics (Block 2005). By
looking at the similarities of both groups pottery styles, archaeologists were able to determine the
minor but very distinctive differences, that one group processed in their art, than the other. By
comparing each group s ceramics by looking at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
100 and 900 (Pluckhahn 2007). The decorations on the pottery that was being produced by the Swift
Creek culture, became unusual overtime (Smith et all. 2009). Radiocarbon dates from the number of
sites archaeologists have excavated containing Swift Creek pottery suggests the time range of their
pottery is approximately 20 B.C. to A.D. 805 (Pluckhahn 2007). The pottery style changed heavily
over time, because Swift Creek vessels first started off as deep jars with notched rims and then their
pottery cultivated into bowl forms with folded rims (Smith et all.

Mass Hysteria In Edgar Allen Poe s The Raven
And my soul from out of that shadow that lies floating on the floor shall be lifted Nevermore! I cite,
completing the final page to The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe.. Thoughts begin to rush my mind like
waves against the shore. How could a tiny raven bring about the mass hysteria in a man and why was
the raven personified with vocabulary like obeisance and craven? As well as, What would I do in a
similar situation? I begin to doze off pondering the traits of The Raven character and how it would be
portrayed in my life should I have a similar experience.
Whoosh, went the sliding glass windows as a gust of wind drug the panels ahinge as it so often did.
With curtains flying and pages of my newest novel rustling I rushed to slam it shut. It was there that I
saw the raven perched out on my lawn. Tattered, mangled, and dark as the midnight palate, it sat
staring through my window. I began to draw similarities like those mentioned in the book. Tis some

was turned. This is something the character in the story is unable to 100% conquer. Although he
makes an effort to resolve his mental battle, his fears win out in the end. The symbolism of the
situation is uncanny! I

Decoding Of The Primal Emotional Experiences Of Humans And...
Decoding of the Primal Emotional Experiences of Humans and Animals from neuroscience
perspective
The article on the science news titled What is the cognitive rift between humans and animals sheds
light on the major cognitive differences between animals and humans. A scientist from the Harvard
University synthesized some key variations that is existent in human and animal cognition into what
precisely distinct human thought and that of animal. Marc Hauser, professor of psychology from
Harvard presents his concept of the uniqueness of humankind, which make human cognition unique.
The professor of psychology was of the opinion that animals share a lot of features that is evident in
human thought, but ironically, there is a cognitive lacuna between humans and other animals. The
professor contends that by analyzing the principal differences in cognitive abilities, some elements are
found that are of human cognition and are distinctively human.
The challenge that emerges though is the recognition of the systems that animals and human have in
common, those that are distinct, and how they interact and interface with one another. In recent times,
some scientists have come to the realization that some animals think in ways that at some point were
perceived unique to humankind. For instance, some animals have episodic memory or mathematical
proficiency that is non linguistic. Nonetheless, despite these obvious similarities, a cognitive gap still
exists between humans and other

Being A Law Breaking Mischievous Youth
Even as a law breaking mischievous youth I had always looked up to Police Officers in my
neighborhood. I even looked up to them when they would chase my friends and I when we snuck out
at night and kicked sprinkler heads off, or got caught drinking underage. I loved to watch the show
Cops and always pictured myself in the situations being portrayed on television. In my youth I did a
lot of things that most people would look down on and police departments may shun you for, but that
didn t stop me from aspiring to join their ranks.
After serving in the military for over five years and attaining the rank of SGT (P), I was sent orders for
recruiting. This was not the path I wanted my career to go down, so I opted to decline the orders. Once
I had done this I was faced with a decision, what should I do now? I decided I would try to get hired at
a local police department. At the time I was stationed in Manhattan, KS and had to choose between
Manhattan, Salina, and Topeka. Topeka and Manhattan were testing on the same days and as fate
would have it I decided to give Manhattan a try.
Having no navigational skills in the city I was first challenged in finding the testing sight for the
physical agility test. The site was located at the RCPD range, which was off of Pillsbury Drive, near
Pillsbury Crossing. When I arrived I was shocked to see that I would be up against forty some odd
people fighting for five or six slots. Once I got out of my

The Disaster Planning Or Management
Although there were numerous predictions that a category 4 or 5 could hit New Orleans, very little
disaster planning or management was accomplished before Katrina hit in August 2005 (Lalwani, et al.,
2007, p10). After Katrina made landfall August 29th, several sections of the levee system collapsed
including levees protecting the Ninth Ward (Lalwani, et al., 2007, p10). The manmade MRGO channel
caused the problems it was predicted; the channel increased the power and the size of the waves that
destroyed many levees (Heerden, Kemp, Bea, Shaffer, Day, Morris, Fitzgerald, and Milanes, 2009,
p306). By early September, people were forcibly evacuated and the storm displaced more than 1.5
million people (Lalwani, et al., 2007, p10). According to Lalwani, et al. (2007, p10), Katrina was the
most destructive and costliest natural disaster in the history of the United States, with an estimated $75
billion worth of damage. Months after the hurricane, 3,200 people were unaccounted for and many of
the low lying areas, most of which were poor and minority neighborhoods, were still under water.
People were stranded in their homes or at evacuation centers without food or water. Those in charge
did not supply those in need with aid in a timely manner that is expected. According to Ripley,
Bennett, Thomas, Calabresi, Donnelly, Thompson, Tumulty, Waller, Zagorin, Chu, DeQuine, and

Compare And Contrast Male And Female Relationships In The...
Relationships in the 1800 s are very different from a typical relationship in the present day. In the
1800 s, when a male and female came together to form a relationship, the male was always superior to
the female. During that time, the formation of a relationship gave the male utter control over his
partner. Nora and Torvalds relationship was established during a time where all women accepted their
fate of being inferior to males. Since then, women have been challenging that stereotype and
demanding equality. One of the prominent difference between a typical relationship now and Nora and
Torvalds s relationship is equality. In a typical relationship now, the man and female are partners and
share equal responsibilities within their home. Today, it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It seems that for most of Nora s life she s been under the thumb of a man. Another noticeable
difference that bounces off equality is the inability of Nora to work or do as she pleased. In a typical
relationship now, it is expected that both the male and female work to provide for their family, as
today s society has adapted to allowing the male to not feel a constant pressure to provide as the
responsibility is shared. In the present, research shows that more and more men are becoming stay at
home husbands, working from home and raising their children at the same time. A man that stayed at
home whilst the woman worked was unheard of during the time of Nora s and Torvalds relationship.
Whereas during the time of Nora and Torvalds s relationship, it was expected that the female took care
of all the home keeping, whilst the male worked to support the family. Unlike a typical relationship in
the present day, Nora had to go behind her husband s back to work. In the novel, she mentions how
she found work to do that occupied her late until night, even when tired she would work as it gave her
pleasure to sit there working and earning

KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT, SOCIAL NETWORKS AND INNOVATION
ORGANISATIONAL LEARNING APPROACHES:
Organisational learning is the process in which managers and employees are enabled to create new
knowledge and more experience in dealing with new situations and problems in the organisation. The
organisation has to deal with new problems and situations which can t be solved by the knowledge
they are using repetitively. So, the organisation finds new ways by gaining new knowledge and
insights to solve the problems or handles the situations.
PROCESS OF ORGANISATIONAL LEARNING
1. Knowledge Acquisition: The initial step in the organisation learning is to attain the knowledge
which is the key factor in the organisation. If the organisation ... Show more content on

4. Organisation Memory: It is difficult to retain every knowledge the individuals learn. The
individuals can forget knowledge they learn with time as it starts diminishing after some duration of
time. So, the organisation should preserve the knowledge in their memory for usage over a long time
period. The organisation can use IT tools to store the information or knowledge.
APPROACHES TO ORGANISATIONAL LEARNING All the organisation expects changes in
individuals whether behavioural, cognitive, or attitudinal from organisation learning. To get this
transformation, the organisation should learn. Some approaches from which an organisation can learn
are:
MANAGEMENT TRAINING: Training is the one of the effective tool from which the people
working in an organisation can learn. The idea of giving training to the management will make their
thinking more similitude and restrain differences in some particular area as there are different culture,

managers to ideas and ideals they are expected to emulate and to think similarly

The Mountains Of The Rocky Mountains
The Rocky Mountains, also known as the Rockies, extends for some 3,000 miles (4,800 km), that
covers land in two North American countries! With a distance of 3,000 miles, the Rockies must have a
variety of physical features and landscapes that makes it an attractive area to tour and explore.
However, all of the human interest in this mountain range could come at a devastating cost.
Disturbances such as resource extraction, tourism/settlement, and farming in the Rocky Mountain
region must cease because they are causing major, irreversible environmental degradation.
The Rocky Mountains contain many resources, like oil, logs, and coal, that people utilize in their daily
lives. With such a high demand for these resources, people are going to the Rocky Mountains to
extract these valuable goods. Resource extraction, such as logging, oil exploration, and mining,
however, is extremely harmful to the Rockies ecosystem. The Rocky Mountains are experiencing
slope erosion where the top layer of soil falls off usually into areas of water and according to Armand
Eardley, from Encyclopedia Britannica, Logging and oil exploration have been responsible for
accelerated slope erosion, both from operations themselves and from the access roads built to reach
them. Erosion has stripped away the often thin soil cover and caused serious silting of streams.
Erosion is harmful because it leads to this serious silting of streams. According to the National
Geographic, Silt is a solid, dust like

Fastcat Benchmarking Job
Benchmarking jobs was a critical step in developing grades and ranges. Some of the job descriptions
in the survey data did not clearly relate to the jobs in FastCat, which caused us to avoid those
particular survey jobs. Due to these discrepancies among the job descriptions, we decided to evaluate
the descriptions that most clearly matched the FastCat jobs. For example, in the Business and
Marketing pay structure, the Administrative Aide requires very basic qualifications, such as a high
school diploma and competencies in basic skills, such as word processing and simple administrative
tasks. We felt that this most closely identified with the Office Support 1 position because its
description involved simple word processing tasks as well ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

with large companies for similar positions, and the market continues to expand in such a way that
many smaller companies are merging to large size. We also looked at the profitability of the

Tobacco Advertising Is Illegal but Alcohol Is Not. Is This...
COMM 3P14 Media Industries Tobacco Advertising is Illegal, but Advertising for Alcohol is not, Is
This Hypocritical? Rebecca Stewart 4574927 Russell Johnston Seminar 3 November 11, 2012
Advertisements are a vital part of any company s marketing strategy, and are used to inform or
persuade an audience about a certain product or service. In fact, North American companies are
among the world s highest advertisers (Boone et al., 2010, 502). Today, an average consumer is
exposed to hundreds of advertisements every day. It is when these companies attempt to promote a
dangerous product that restrictions must be, and have been put in place. For several years, Canada s

Marketers should make responsible decisions, and not just focus on generating profits, because it is
legal. Ads should address audiences not just as consumers who care about material interests but as
citizens who care about social virtues and the public good (Hove, 2009, 35). The idea of advertising
alcoholic beverages is unethical. While there are mild restrictions in Canada regarding alcohol
promotions, there is a demand for more. Some provinces run ads that promote responsible drinking, or
the dangers of drinking and driving in an attempt to shed light on alcohol abuse (Boone, 2010, 525).
However, these attempts do not cancel out the multitude of beer and liquor advertisements in today s
media. Some alcohol advertisements include the ideology that drinking a certain brand of beer will
influence their social class, or improve their quality of life in some way. This is extremely
controversial. An article from the South African Journal of Psychology notes, there are no laws against
[alcohol] advertisements; however, responsible corporate and professional action, would prevent the
use of these advertisements from a social and moral standpoint (Dubihela amp; Dubihela, 2011, 209).
Clearly, an ethical dilemma is present. The Canadian Radio television and Telecommunications
Commission is one organization that has viewed alcohol advertisements critically. Since 1968 they
have required broadcasters to report the number of alcohol related

Baroque Ornamentation
Francois Couperin and baroque ornamentation
The understanding of very specific features from the Baroque period requires a more general
approximation to get there. Why a culture starts to disappear and another one to grow? For this kind of
question there are just inconclusive answers. Bukofzer distinguished three major periods, though he
acknowledged that they did not coincide in different countries: 1580 1630, early baroque; 1630 80,
middle Baroque; 1680 1730, late Baroque. Clercx pushed the beginning of the period back to the
middle of the 16th century, where she located a phase of primitive Baroque . The second period, full

developments emanated from the second half of the sixteenth century, influencing and at times

challenges to the previously accepted principles of contrapuntal style, the ars perfecta of the Franco

Balanced Scorecard Facilities Management
KPMG International Shared Services and Outsourcing Advisory Using a balanced scorecard to help
measure facilities management performance by Steve Silen, Director, KPMG Advisory Services For
nearly 20 years, leading organizations have been using balanced scorecards to strategically measure
the financial and non financial performance of different operational functions within their firms. More
recently, they have begun leveraging them to measure the performance of their third party service

This enables them to zoom in on specific expenses such as maintenance or energy/utilities, and have
meaningful discussions with their providers about whether their expectations are being met. Customer
satisfaction Measuring the satisfaction level of those receiving FM services is another critical part of
the process. Organizations should use a variety of methods to obtain input directly from their internal
customers, including periodic email surveys (e.g., annual/ semi annual/upon completion of a service),
online or paper suggestion boxes, administrative assistant feedback sessions and # of complaints

customer satisfaction. All of these are excellent ways to hear the voice of the customer and identify
areas for improvement. Yet care should be taken to develop and administer surveys that capture
relevant information without being a burden to complete, and that feedback sessions do not keep
participants away from their jobs for too long. Service delivery Proper operational performance is
ensured only when providers meet or surpass firms service delivery expectations. Thus, organizations
should implement a detailed scorecard to assess service delivery performance for each service line.
For example, in the maintenance category, the detailed scorecard may look like the example in Figure

The Philosophy Of Passive Management
speaking, not true. In particular, it was assumed that the market is in the state of equilibrium (i.e. all
investors have finished to complete their portfolios), operational and transaction costs (payment of
intermediaries services, staff, information services, taxes, etc.) are insignificant, the investor has the
ability to receive and grant loans on the same risk free rate, and so on. Nevertheless, the idea that the
market portfolio is probably close to an effective portfolio, initiated a passive portfolio management.
This strategy means that when the investor prepares the portfolio, determining the expected return, he
is focused entirely on the market portfolio and he doesn t carry on to make any changes in the
composition of the portfolio after its formation. Hence is the name. The philosophy of passive
management is to minimize the costs of market research and the formation of the portfolio if there is
sufficient guarantee of obtaining a stable high yield. In fact, an investor, preparing the portfolio, is
focused on some reference portfolio (benchmark portfolio), i.e. portfolio with standard yield in
comparison with the actual yield of the portfolio manager. This is not necessarily to consider as a
reference only the market portfolio. There are dozens of different investment funds, called index
funds, which focus on the benchmark portfolio, consisting of securities, selected for a particular trait
(eg: a part of any index). So, there are index funds holding

Oedipus Rex and Aristotle Essay example
The Six Elements of a Tragedy in Oedipus Rex Aristotle s The Poetics describes the process of a
tragedy. It is not the guide per se of writing a tragedy but is the idea s Aristotle collected while
studying tragedies. A tragedy, according to Aristotle, consists of six major points. The first and most
important is the plot, which is what all the other points are based on. Such points are: character,
language, thought, melody, and spectacle (Aristotle). A prime example of the usage of these parts in a
tragic drama is evident in Sophocles Oedipus Rex . The plot of a tragedy usually consists of a tragic
hero s fall from grace. Aristotle describes plot in two ways a simple plot and a complex one. In a
simple plot a fall from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Oedipus flaw is he does not know who he is this ignorance leads to him bringing about his own
downfall. Next on the list of elements of a drama is thought. The element thought is used to support
character and is evident in the speeches of the characters (Aristotle). These speeches reveal the
thoughts and feelings of the character; further allowing the reader to develop a relationship with the
character. In Oedipus Rex thought is illustrated in the speech Oedipus makes when he realizes the
truth about his situations. Language, or diction, is fourth on the list of a tragedy major points. Aristotle
points out that metaphors are the most useful form of language in a tragedy. The main metaphor
portrayed in Oedipus Rex is that of sight and blindness. The king things he sees all but in reality he is
blind to the truth. Ironically the only one who can see the truth is the blind seer Teiresias. Oedipus
begins the play able to see but is blind and ends the play blind but able to see. The fifth major point in
a tragedy is melody. Melody involves the chorus of the drama. Aristotle contends that the chorus
should not be just be an intermission but should add to the plot and character of the tragedy
(Aristotle). This is exemplified in Oedipus Rex in lines INSERT BOOK QUOTE. The last and least
important element of tragedy is spectacle. Aristotle rates this last because it

Gap Year In College Essay
Lauren Maurer
Mr. Worthington
AP Lang
16 January 2014
College Can Wait
Taking a gap year between high school and college is becoming a rapidly developing trend amongst
students in the United Kingdom and United States over the last decade. The extreme pressure from the
four years spent in high school leaves students drained and needing to re energize before facing an
even more rigorous course load in college. A gap year is the perfect solution as students take time off
with a purpose before furthering their education. A gap year is a structured period of time between
high school and college when students take a break from formal education to increase self awareness,
learn from different cultures, and experiment for possible careers. As defined by Andrew Jones in his
thesis paper for the University of London, a gap year is, any period of time between 3 and 24 months
which an individual takes out of formal education, training or the workplace, and where the time out
sits in the context of a longer career trajectory (Jones 8). Students spend time away from home
traveling, volunteering, interning or working in an unfamiliar area to gain new experiences. This
period is ideally a phase for students to explore the world and gain valuable life skills and a mature
understanding while transitioning into independence. Its purpose is for a student to find out more
about oneself, and clarify future career pursuits before entering college. It is a time in which students

Elements of Network Security
Introduction
The primary objective of a network security system is to, in a cost effective manner, balance
convenient access to legitimate users and inaccessibility to attackers. In a nutshell, the goal is to
prevent connectivity to anyone intending to cause harm to the network. The harm to which this paper
refers can come in the following forms:
1. Application level security threats, such as e mail viruses and attachments.
2. Threats to network infrastructure devices.
3. Theft of network connectivity services.
4. Unauthorized access from internal and external sources.
5. Denial of service attacks. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
28, 2001). Because this is an automated system, it depends on a mechanical process of discerning
what is good or bad. This at times can lead to false positives or negatives, or the blocking of a
legitimate user and giving access to a system violator. This weakness in the Cisco IDS requires that an
additional form of violation detection be used.
In addition to the IDS, LADWP has a staff of technicians who provide continuous network
monitoring. In addition to keeping track of the alarms detected by the IDS Director Platform, these
technicians also use other tools to keep an eye on network traffic levels, as well as performing routine
vulnerability probing. One key tool used is Lucent s VitalSuite. This tool uses real time event analysis,
which helps to identify network resources that have exceeded acceptable levels.
To properly use VitalSuite, the technicians establish what they believe to be normal network activity.
This norm is then used as a baseline to help in the identification of any abnormal network traffic. Once
the baseline is established, levels of severity are set. The levels are minor, major and critical, with
critical meaning immediate action is required. The only time the system alarms is when a critical error
is detected. During normal operations, the technicians monitor VitalSuites display, looking for unusual
events. These events can

Balanced Scorecard Case Analysis
Introduction
When Thomas Schmall became CEO of Volkswagen do Brazil (VWB) in 2007, the company was
facing major market share declines and financial losses (Kaplan, R 2011). Because of the intense
competition in the global market, VWB could not raise prices on products shipped ... Show more

It was comprehensive and clear. The strategy map, with its four dimensions, clearly defines the cause
and effect relations and how the intangible assets (employees) can get converted into tangible financial
results. Each dimensions objectives had defined metrics associated with them to illustrate what is
necessary to overcome the challenge. The Balanced Scorecard was the perfect tool to measure,
monitor and define these outcomes. Along with the Balanced Scorecard was a matrix that listed each
objective and with a set of actions that was assigned to the appropriate business unit that was
responsible for monitoring and achieving their targets. This helped with implementation because there
wasn t any question as to who the champion would be assigned to a particular objective. It allowed
ownership, and with the CEO leading this transformation program and being supported by top
management, it helped with buy in from the employees.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of the scorecard and its implementation?
There is no doubt that a Balanced Scorecard is a great management tool to restructure a company s
culture and formulate an aggressive strategy. Yet, it has its weaknesses. Implementation into an
existing operation is very time consuming and involves a lot of man hours to formulate a plan so
everyone understands how the tool works. Initially, when the Schmall presented Act to Win , to the
executives, that had to go through a two

Examples Of Literature In Boys And Girls
An Awakening One awakening stage in a person s life is the stage between being a child and being an
adult. When an author writes about this stage it can be referred to as coming of age literature:
literature that follows the life of a person as he or she shifts from adolescence to young adulthood and
discovers who he or she is while seeing the world around him or her differently. These coming of age
narratives look back at the time of a youth when he or she is influenced by his or her family, mentors,
friends, peers, relationships, and community, all of which help shape the youth into the person they
will one day become. And, coming of age literature are narratives which contain similar
characteristics; such as, innocence of the world s expectations, life that seems simple as a child but
more complex the older one becomes, the disappointment of discovering life is not as black and white
as one has perceived, tension between family members or peers, conflicts within oneself as
understanding of the world changes, wisdom as one ages, and acceptance and realization that the adult
world is complex and difficult. In the short story Boys and Girls, Alice Munro successfully explores
the protagonist innocence of the world s stereotypes, conflict between who she ... Show more content

Robert Mondavi and the Wine Industry
Since the late 1960 s, California wine maker Robert Mondavi has been perceived by its stakeholders
as one of the world s most innovative and high quality producers of fine wine. It is therefore not
surprising that the company has endured great financial success; in fact, it has secured an impressive
annual growth in earnings per share of ~28% over the last 8 years. Recently however, there have been
many external forces that may serve to threaten the long term profitability of the firm: sales have been
decreasing over the last 6 months due to a staggering economy, Australian imports are on the rise,
shrinking the size of the pie for domestic firms, and there has been an industry wide trend to
consolidate; existing firms are merging and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Smaller firms such as the family run operations in Europe may not be able to realize these same cost
efficiencies. Furthermore, grapes represent 50 to 70% of a winemakers COGS, thus the competition
for sourcing high quality grape growers is quite high. Just as Mondavi does for 75% of its purchases,
most premium wine makers enter into long term contracts with growers to not only ensure that their
demand is met but also to make sure that they receive grapes that are consistent in quality. Due to the
fact that consumers have a plethora of premium wines (substitutes) to choose from and there is no
penalty for switching between brands consumer buying power is fairly high, making consumers
sensitive to price increases. As previously mentioned, the competition for sourcing quality grape
growers is high making switching costs high as well. In order to circumvent the dependency on
outside growers, Mondavi is starting to increase its internal sourcing capabilities. The premium wine
segment is quite concentrated with high barriers to entry making mergers and acquisitions a strong and
prevalent growth strategy. With industry analysts forecasting the demand for premium wine to grow at
8% to 10% per year, many former non rivals are now becoming a threat. Jug wine producers are
entering the premium market and beer and spirit producers

Essay about How Napoleon Maintains Control in France...
How Napoleon Maintains Control in France 1799 1814
After the long period of instability in France, Napoleon seemed to acknowledge the importance of
maintaining his power, influence and control over France and the French people. Napoleon was very
able in this regard as it is important to make the people to support you and to limit opposition,
something that Napoleon and Hitler shared in common. Napoleon maintained his power in many
different ways, rewarding people that supported him, repressing people who didn t, censoring material
that would harm his regime and producing other material to boost its popularity. He also controlled
things which were important for everyday people like religion, ... Show more content on

The next way that Napoleon maintained his control was through Repression, to limit any opposition to
his regime. Napoleon created Code Napoleon to bring uniformity of the law to all of France. This
Code was illiberal, restrictive, authoritarian and brought order. Napoleon then banned trade unions and
introduced The Livret . He also introduced harsher Criminal and Penal codes with new courts,
tribunals for political offenders, arbitrary imprisonment without trial and house arrest. All these
changes gave Napoleon perfect power to remove any opposition, as he had influence of appointment
of judges and the Supreme Court. Napoleon also used the police, which monitored public opinion,
used a network of spies and informants. Napoleon also had his own secret police so that he had
supreme power to remove anyone at all that stood against him. Napoleon also appointed Prefects for
each department which was important as it made a connection between local and central government
and Napoleon made the prefects responsible for propaganda, education and conscription within each
region, so Napoleon could make sure that he kept his support through out France. This repression was
important as Napoleon could prevent any opposition from developing which may threaten his regime,
as many normal people wont do anything if there is no organised opposition to turn

  • 2. Early American Indian Pottery History Introduction Ceramic making is still a popular tradition today in the Americas, especially on Native Indian Reservations, like in Western, North Carolina. The use of ceramics, however, is quite different than the way it was used by the natives during the Middle Woodland Period. Today, pottery is mainly made for decoration or art purposes by modern day Americans, but according to Wallis (2011), about 3,000 years ago the use of pottery became a very common use and practiced tradition among the native people who lived during that time period. The Swift Creek culture and the Cherokee Indians had very similar methods in formulating ceramics. The archaeological findings of these artifacts states that one group had been more advanced designs on their vessels. This reason is most likely because of the materials that one group was able to access in their area that the other group did not have available. One group was also more traditional and spiritual in making their vessels, which caused them to create more complex designs and methods while designing their ceramics (Block 2005). By looking at the similarities of both groups pottery styles, archaeologists were able to determine the minor but very distinctive differences, that one group processed in their art, than the other. By comparing each group s ceramics by looking at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 100 and 900 (Pluckhahn 2007). The decorations on the pottery that was being produced by the Swift Creek culture, became unusual overtime (Smith et all. 2009). Radiocarbon dates from the number of sites archaeologists have excavated containing Swift Creek pottery suggests the time range of their pottery is approximately 20 B.C. to A.D. 805 (Pluckhahn 2007). The pottery style changed heavily over time, because Swift Creek vessels first started off as deep jars with notched rims and then their pottery cultivated into bowl forms with folded rims (Smith et all. ... I cite, completing the final page to The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe.. Thoughts begin to rush my mind like waves against the shore. How could a tiny raven bring about the mass hysteria in a man and why was the raven personified with vocabulary like obeisance and craven? As well as, What would I do in a similar situation? I begin to doze off pondering the traits of The Raven character and how it would be portrayed in my life should I have a similar experience. Whoosh, went the sliding glass windows as a gust of wind drug the panels ahinge as it so often did. With curtains flying and pages of my newest novel rustling I rushed to slam it shut. It was there that I saw the raven perched out on my lawn. Tattered, mangled, and dark as the midnight palate, it sat staring through my window. Decoding of the Primal Emotional Experiences of Humans and Animals from neuroscience perspective The article on the science news titled What is the cognitive rift between humans and animals sheds light on the major cognitive differences between animals and humans. A scientist from the Harvard University synthesized some key variations that is existent in human and animal cognition into what precisely distinct human thought and that of animal. Marc Hauser, professor of psychology from Harvard presents his concept of the uniqueness of humankind, which make human cognition unique. The professor of psychology was of the opinion that animals share a lot of features that is evident in human thought, but ironically, there is a cognitive lacuna between humans and other animals. The professor contends that by analyzing the principal differences in cognitive abilities, some elements are found that are of human cognition and are distinctively human. The challenge that emerges though is the recognition of the systems that animals and human have in common, those that are distinct, and how they interact and interface with one another. In recent times, some scientists have come to the realization that some animals think in ways that at some point were perceived unique to humankind. For instance, some animals have episodic memory or mathematical proficiency that is non linguistic. • 6. Being A Law Breaking Mischievous Youth Even as a law breaking mischievous youth I had always looked up to Police Officers in my neighborhood. I even looked up to them when they would chase my friends and I when we snuck out at night and kicked sprinkler heads off, or got caught drinking underage. I loved to watch the show Cops and always pictured myself in the situations being portrayed on television. In my youth I did a lot of things that most people would look down on and police departments may shun you for, but that didn t stop me from aspiring to join their ranks. After serving in the military for over five years and attaining the rank of SGT (P), I was sent orders for recruiting. This was not the path I wanted my career to go down, so I opted to decline the orders. Once I had done this I was faced with a decision, what should I do now? I decided I would try to get hired at a local police department. At the time I was stationed in Manhattan, KS and had to choose between Manhattan, Salina, and Topeka. Topeka and Manhattan were testing on the same days and as fate would have it I decided to give Manhattan a try. Having no navigational skills in the city I was first challenged in finding the testing sight for the physical agility test. The Disaster Planning Or Management Although there were numerous predictions that a category 4 or 5 could hit New Orleans, very little disaster planning or management was accomplished before Katrina hit in August 2005 (Lalwani, et al., 2007, p10). After Katrina made landfall August 29th, several sections of the levee system collapsed including levees protecting the Ninth Ward (Lalwani, et al., 2007, p10). The manmade MRGO channel caused the problems it was predicted; the channel increased the power and the size of the waves that destroyed many levees (Heerden, Kemp, Bea, Shaffer, Day, Morris, Fitzgerald, and Milanes, 2009, p306). By early September, people were forcibly evacuated and the storm displaced more than 1.5 million people (Lalwani, et al., 2007, p10). According to Lalwani, et al. (2007, p10), Katrina was the most destructive and costliest natural disaster in the history of the United States, with an estimated $75 billion worth of damage. Months after the hurricane, 3,200 people were unaccounted for and many of the low lying areas, most of which were poor and minority neighborhoods, were still under water. People were stranded in their homes or at evacuation centers without food or water. Those in charge did not supply those in need with aid in a timely manner that is expected. In the 1800 s, when a male and female came together to form a relationship, the male was always superior to the female. During that time, the formation of a relationship gave the male utter control over his partner. Nora and Torvalds relationship was established during a time where all women accepted their fate of being inferior to males. In the present, research shows that more and more men are becoming stay at home husbands, working from home and raising their children at the same time. A man that stayed at home whilst the woman worked was unheard of during the time of Nora s and Torvalds relationship. • 11. The Mountains Of The Rocky Mountains The Rocky Mountains, also known as the Rockies, extends for some 3,000 miles (4,800 km), that covers land in two North American countries! With a distance of 3,000 miles, the Rockies must have a variety of physical features and landscapes that makes it an attractive area to tour and explore. However, all of the human interest in this mountain range could come at a devastating cost. Disturbances such as resource extraction, tourism/settlement, and farming in the Rocky Mountain region must cease because they are causing major, irreversible environmental degradation. The Rocky Mountains contain many resources, like oil, logs, and coal, that people utilize in their daily lives. With such a high demand for these resources, people are going to the Rocky Mountains to extract these valuable goods. Resource extraction, such as logging, oil exploration, and mining, however, is extremely harmful to the Rockies ecosystem. The Rocky Mountains are experiencing slope erosion where the top layer of soil falls off usually into areas of water and according to Armand Eardley, from Encyclopedia Britannica, Logging and oil exploration have been responsible for accelerated slope erosion, both from operations themselves and from the access roads built to reach them. Erosion has stripped away the often thin soil cover and caused serious silting of streams. Erosion is harmful because it leads to this serious silting of streams. Rebecca Stewart 4574927 Russell Johnston Seminar 3 November 11, 2012 Advertisements are a vital part of any company s marketing strategy, and are used to inform or persuade an audience about a certain product or service. Marketers should make responsible decisions, and not just focus on generating profits, because it is legal. Ads should address audiences not just as consumers who care about material interests but as citizens who care about social virtues and the public good (Hove, 2009, 35). The idea of advertising alcoholic beverages is unethical. While there are mild restrictions in Canada regarding alcohol promotions, there is a demand for more. Some provinces run ads that promote responsible drinking, or the dangers of drinking and driving in an attempt to shed light on alcohol abuse (Boone, 2010, 525). However, these attempts do not cancel out the multitude of beer and liquor advertisements in today s media. Some alcohol advertisements include the ideology that drinking a certain brand of beer will influence their social class, or improve their quality of life in some way. This is extremely controversial. An article from the South African Journal of Psychology notes, there are no laws against [alcohol] advertisements; however, responsible corporate and professional action, would prevent the use of these advertisements from a social and moral standpoint (Dubihela amp; Dubihela, 2011, 209). I instantly thought of intimacy that a couple share on an emotional and mental perspective like for example the secrets they share, the ones that hides it, the memories, insight , and other personality that they keep as a morse code for their relationship to determine if their communication will be the downfall of them. I admit, I thought this more metaphorical than literal. It s really was a theme of an idea that Samuel Gosling experimented resulted that a sacred place such as a bedroom could easily identify the Big Five Inventory of the personality of a person. • 22. Balanced Scorecard Facilities Management KPMG International Shared Services and Outsourcing Advisory Using a balanced scorecard to help measure facilities management performance by Steve Silen, Director, KPMG Advisory Services For nearly 20 years, leading organizations have been using balanced scorecards to strategically measure the financial and non financial performance of different operational functions within their firms. More recently, they have begun leveraging them to measure the performance of their third party service providers. In the facilities management (FM) function, use of a balanced scorecard enables companies to evaluate the performance of their external providers against multiple criteria (see Figure 1), help set alignment and focus, identify improvement ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This enables them to zoom in on specific expenses such as maintenance or energy/utilities, and have meaningful discussions with their providers about whether their expectations are being met. Customer satisfaction Measuring the satisfaction level of those receiving FM services is another critical part of the process. Organizations should use a variety of methods to obtain input directly from their internal customers, including periodic email surveys (e.g., annual/ semi annual/upon completion of a service), online or paper suggestion boxes, administrative assistant feedback sessions and # of complaints received. A detailed scorecard, similar to the one in the cost category, should be established to measure customer satisfaction. All of these are excellent ways to hear the voice of the customer and identify areas for improvement. Yet care should be taken to develop and administer surveys that capture relevant information without being a burden to complete, and that feedback sessions do not keep participants away from their jobs for too long. Service delivery Proper operational performance is ensured only when providers meet or surpass firms service delivery expectations. Thus, organizations should implement a detailed scorecard to assess service delivery performance for each service line. For example, in the maintenance category, the detailed scorecard may look like the example in Figure 4 on the next page and Figure 5 shows ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. The Philosophy Of Passive Management speaking, not true. In particular, it was assumed that the market is in the state of equilibrium (i.e. all investors have finished to complete their portfolios), operational and transaction costs (payment of intermediaries services, staff, information services, taxes, etc.) are insignificant, the investor has the ability to receive and grant loans on the same risk free rate, and so on. Nevertheless, the idea that the market portfolio is probably close to an effective portfolio, initiated a passive portfolio management. This strategy means that when the investor prepares the portfolio, determining the expected return, he is focused entirely on the market portfolio and he doesn t carry on to make any changes in the composition of the portfolio after its formation. Hence is the name. The philosophy of passive management is to minimize the costs of market research and the formation of the portfolio if there is sufficient guarantee of obtaining a stable high yield. In fact, an investor, preparing the portfolio, is focused on some reference portfolio (benchmark portfolio), i.e. portfolio with standard yield in comparison with the actual yield of the portfolio manager. This is not necessarily to consider as a reference only the market portfolio. There are dozens of different investment funds, called index funds, which focus on the benchmark portfolio, consisting of securities, selected for a particular trait (eg: a part of any index). So, there are index funds holding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is not the guide per se of writing a tragedy but is the idea s Aristotle collected while studying tragedies. A tragedy, according to Aristotle, consists of six major points. The first and most important is the plot, which is what all the other points are based on. Such points are: character, language, thought, melody, and spectacle (Aristotle). A prime example of the usage of these parts in a tragic drama is evident in Sophocles Oedipus Rex . The plot of a tragedy usually consists of a tragic hero s fall from grace. Oedipus flaw is he does not know who he is this ignorance leads to him bringing about his own downfall. Next on the list of elements of a drama is thought. The element thought is used to support character and is evident in the speeches of the characters (Aristotle). These speeches reveal the thoughts and feelings of the character; further allowing the reader to develop a relationship with the character. In Oedipus Rex thought is illustrated in the speech Oedipus makes when he realizes the truth about his situations. Language, or diction, is fourth on the list of a tragedy major points. Aristotle points out that metaphors are the most useful form of language in a tragedy. The main metaphor portrayed in Oedipus Rex is that of sight and blindness. The king things he sees all but in reality he is blind to the truth. Ironically the only one who can see the truth is the blind seer Teiresias. Oedipus begins the play able to see but is blind and ends the play blind but able to see. The fifth major point in a tragedy is melody. Melody involves the chorus of the drama. Aristotle contends that the chorus should not be just be an intermission but should add to the plot and character of the tragedy (Aristotle). This is exemplified in Oedipus Rex in lines INSERT BOOK QUOTE. The last and least important element of tragedy is spectacle. Aristotle rates this last because it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 26. Gap Year In College Essay Lauren Maurer Mr. Worthington AP Lang 16 January 2014 College Can Wait Taking a gap year between high school and college is becoming a rapidly developing trend amongst students in the United Kingdom and United States over the last decade. The extreme pressure from the four years spent in high school leaves students drained and needing to re energize before facing an even more rigorous course load in college. A gap year is the perfect solution as students take time off with a purpose before furthering their education. A gap year is a structured period of time between high school and college when students take a break from formal education to increase self awareness, learn from different cultures, and experiment for possible careers. As defined by Andrew Jones in his thesis paper for the University of London, a gap year is, any period of time between 3 and 24 months which an individual takes out of formal education, training or the workplace, and where the time out sits in the context of a longer career trajectory (Jones 8). Students spend time away from home traveling, volunteering, interning or working in an unfamiliar area to gain new experiences. This period is ideally a phase for students to explore the world and gain valuable life skills and a mature understanding while transitioning into independence. Its purpose is for a student to find out more about oneself, and clarify future career pursuits before entering college. It is a time in which students learn ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Because this is an automated system, it depends on a mechanical process of discerning what is good or bad. This at times can lead to false positives or negatives, or the blocking of a legitimate user and giving access to a system violator. This weakness in the Cisco IDS requires that an additional form of violation detection be used. In addition to the IDS, LADWP has a staff of technicians who provide continuous network monitoring. In addition to keeping track of the alarms detected by the IDS Director Platform, these technicians also use other tools to keep an eye on network traffic levels, as well as performing routine vulnerability probing. One key tool used is Lucent s VitalSuite. This tool uses real time event analysis, which helps to identify network resources that have exceeded acceptable levels. To properly use VitalSuite, the technicians establish what they believe to be normal network activity. This norm is then used as a baseline to help in the identification of any abnormal network traffic. Once the baseline is established, levels of severity are set. The levels are minor, major and critical, with critical meaning immediate action is required. The only time the system alarms is when a critical error is detected. During normal operations, the technicians monitor VitalSuites display, looking for unusual events. These events can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Examples Of Literature In Boys And Girls An Awakening One awakening stage in a person s life is the stage between being a child and being an adult. When an author writes about this stage it can be referred to as coming of age literature: literature that follows the life of a person as he or she shifts from adolescence to young adulthood and discovers who he or she is while seeing the world around him or her differently. These coming of age narratives look back at the time of a youth when he or she is influenced by his or her family, mentors, friends, peers, relationships, and community, all of which help shape the youth into the person they will one day become. And, coming of age literature are narratives which contain similar characteristics; such as, innocence of the world s expectations, life that seems simple as a child but more complex the older one becomes, the disappointment of discovering life is not as black and white as one has perceived, tension between family members or peers, conflicts within oneself as understanding of the world changes, wisdom as one ages, and acceptance and realization that the adult world is complex and difficult. Robert Mondavi and the Wine Industry Since the late 1960 s, California wine maker Robert Mondavi has been perceived by its stakeholders as one of the world s most innovative and high quality producers of fine wine. It is therefore not surprising that the company has endured great financial success; in fact, it has secured an impressive annual growth in earnings per share of ~28% over the last 8 years. Recently however, there have been many external forces that may serve to threaten the long term profitability of the firm: sales have been decreasing over the last 6 months due to a staggering economy, Australian imports are on the rise, shrinking the size of the pie for domestic firms, and there has been an industry wide trend to consolidate; existing firms are merging and ... Furthermore, grapes represent 50 to 70% of a winemakers COGS, thus the competition for sourcing high quality grape growers is quite high. Just as Mondavi does for 75% of its purchases, most premium wine makers enter into long term contracts with growers to not only ensure that their demand is met but also to make sure that they receive grapes that are consistent in quality. Due to the fact that consumers have a plethora of premium wines (substitutes) to choose from and there is no penalty for switching between brands consumer buying power is fairly high, making consumers sensitive to price increases. As previously mentioned, the competition for sourcing quality grape growers is high making switching costs high as well. In order to circumvent the dependency on outside growers, Mondavi is starting to increase its internal sourcing capabilities. The premium wine segment is quite concentrated with high barriers to entry making mergers and acquisitions a strong and prevalent growth strategy.
