Rhetorical Reading Essay(Revision)
Since they started pouring the concrete for the dam Lake Powell has been a center of controversy.
From nature preservationists to ancient ruins advocates the subject has been heated and intense. On
the other hand, those who support Lake Powell are just as avid and active in their defense of the
reservoir. One of the former, Edward Abbey, sets forth his plea, hoping it does not fall upon deaf ears.
Abbey attempts in his article to help the reader visualize Glen Canyon before it was dammed up. He
uses a lot of pathos to help the reader feel the beauty of the previous Glen Canyon and the ugliness of
the present. His article ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Certainly it has a photogenic backdrop of buttes and mesas, projecting above the expansive surface of
stagnant waters where the speedboats, houseboats and cabin cruisers play. But it is no longer a
wilderness (146) Were we to reverse the order and take out the connotations, it would be a great
statement supporting Lake Powell. Certainly it is no longer a wilderness, but it has a photogenic
backdrop of buttes and mesas, projecting above the expansive surface of waters where the speedboats,
houseboats and cabin cruisers play. One rhetorical strategy he uses fairly well is the omission of
details. I will be the first to admit that the creating of any reservoir will kill any life that it floods out,
which is obvious, but in this case I believe that the pros far outweigh the cons. Abbey used omission
of details to make it seem that the reservoir had killed all wildlife in that area and desolated the
environment, saying that after draining the dam, plant life will come back, [w]ith the renewal of plant
life will come the insects, the birds, the lizards, and snakes, the mammals. However, Lake Powell is
teeming with life. According to the Lake Powell website, it is home to over 170 species of birds, 800
different mammals and more that a dozen reptile species (Lake Powell). And anyone who has been
there will ask, if there is a slight lack of insects, which I am not sure

Neurodevelopmental and Neurocognitive Disorders Essay
Neurodevelopmental and Neurocognitive Disorders Until the twentieth century, little account was
taken of the special characteristics of psychopathology in children; maladaptive patterns considered
relatively specific to childhood, such as autism, received virtually no attention at all (Butcher Hooley,
2014). Today there is more attention paid to children with maladaptive behaviors and scientific
research has been done that demands more attention is paid to specific children s behaviors, not the
behaviors of adult as there are no fair comparisons that allow the diagnosis and treatments of adult and
children s behaviors to be equal. Neurodevelopment disorders in children result in maladaptive
behavior which appears in different life ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
N., Hooley, J. M., Mineka, 2014). The causal factors for ADHD in children have been much debated.
It still remains unclear to what extent the disorder results from environmental or biological factors
(Carr et al., 2006; Hinshaw et al., 2007), and recent researchers believe that biological factors such as
genetic inheritance will turn out to be important precursors to the development of ADHD (Durston,
2003). But firm conclusions about any biological basis for ADHD must await further research
(Butcher Hooley, 2014, p. 513). Treatment for ADHD that focuses on controlling behavior with drugs
has been promising. One particular treatment involved the effectiveness of MTA fading procedures.
According to the article, the findings suggest that in contrast to the hypothesized deterioration in the
relative benefit of behavioral modification between nine and 14 months (after completion of fading),
the MTA behavior generalization and maintenance procedures implemented through nine months
apparently yield continuing improvement through 14 months, with preservation of the relative position
of behavior compared

was not even twenty four hours and the KKK embarked on the attacks once again (117). With attacks
continued on by the KKK other steps were trying to be made in racial equality. Occurring before the
time of the KKK s start of their attacks were the Freedom Rides looking for racial equality on the
transportation services. Raymond Arsenault discusses in his book Freedom Riders 1961 and the
Struggle for Racial Justice that the Freedom Rides began after the blacks were forced to give up their
bus seat, so that whites could sit, Irene Morgan first experienced this when she was forced by the
driver to remove herself from the seat in 1944 (14). Arsenault finds that the rides made their way all of
the south of the United States going from Florida to Northern Virginia toward the west in Illinois and
through Missouri and heading as west as Texas and California (220 221). John A. Kirk writes in his
article Battle Cry of Freedom: Little Rock, Arkansas and The Freedom Riders at Fifty that the riders
were surged on by the Congress of Racial Equality(CORE). The riders route was planned to ride from
St, Louis, Little Rock, Shreveport, and finally stopping in New Orleans. They would later leave New

Popularised Explanation Of Memory
Memory is a complicated topic to describe, as its role, theory and application differs from person to
person. A popularised explanation of memory involves a tiered or levelled approach, ranging from a
holistic to a reductionist description (Bilkey, 2016). The Social and cultural level of memory refers to
information stored in museums, libraries and oral history. Individual memory is another level of
description, and is specific to the person; what they did that day, or ate for example. At the reductionist
spectrum of memory is the biological level, describing the fundamental process in the body that lead
to memory formation, such as synaptic modulation and information encoding in DNA (Bilkey, 2016).
Whichever level is adopted, three processes

Pawel Kuczynski s Art Essay
Phones are the easiest and most common way to get connected. Through his art, Pawel Kuczynski is
warning the audience of problems that phones cause among people. The artist has created many
paintings to convey the idea of technology causing people to become separated and disconnected from
one another. Kuczynski s art could be seen as a metaphor for young people, being connected through
technology but still isolated in loneliness. Phones are most likely the most commonly used source of
communication in the world; which begs the question of how they could possibly be disconnecting
people. The title alone, Islands, suggests to the audience a sense of distance and isolation. That is also
conveyed in the painting itself with the use of perspective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The title again has reference to the picture but doesn t convey the actual meaning. There is a person
scrolling through their phone while the snow falls. The person has been there so long that a snow man
was made on his back. This another great use of satire by Kuczynski. He has developed such a playful
way of calling attention to these overarching societal problems that no one really seems to be talking
about. The person in the picture isn t really living his life. All of his time has been consumed with the
phone that only has virtual images on it. It s crazy how technology has done the opposite of what it
was intended to do. Instead of playing in the snow with his friends his just sitting out in the cold all
alone. Every time I go out I notice fewer people communicating with one another verbally. The
common thought is that social media, phones, and just technology in general connects people of all
kinds across the globe. Connecting with people through the use of technology has a few positives but
what about the overwhelming negative aspects. Millions of people can connect to children and other
adults with horrifying intentions. Cyberbullying is becoming prevalent in schools. Kids are being
exposed to things they shouldn t be. Predators lurk online all the time. Technology is expanding every
day and more people are able to gain access to it. A CNN article stated that

The Arab-Israeli Conflict In The 1800s
The Arab Israeli conflict has been an ongoing issue from the 1800s. The conflict is based on the
struggle for land for both the Jews and the Arabs. When the 1947 partition plan was established by the
United Nations to split Palestine into two states, the Palestinian Arab people ended up with less land
than the Jewish (Jewish 56 percent and Arabs 43 percent of Palestine). This decision lead to war
between the two groups, meaning that there was no peace. The Arabs have been through a lot since the
Partition plan came into play. Not only do they have to share land with the Jews, but after the partition
plan, the Jews threated and killed some of the Arabs out of their own country, which resulted in them
becoming refugees. Both parties believe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
More violence and tension followed after the Jewish National Fund purchased land from some Arab
landowners, meaning that the Arabs in the area were evicted.
To make the Arabs happy and stop revolting against the British, they released the White Paper that
limited future Jewish migration, land purchases and promised independence for the Arabs. The Jews
felt like this was betrayal to the Balfour Declaration. Both the Arabs and the Jews have felt betrayed
by the decisions made concerning them. For the Arabs, it was when the Balfour Declaration was made
and stated it was in great favour of the national home in Palestine for the Jews and when the partition
plan came out. For the Jews it was when the white paper limited Jewish migration and land promises.
Furthermore, it resulted into fights among the two groups. However, both groups eventually signed the

Sunset Boulevard, a classic black and white movie that displays what Hollywood actually consists of.
Directed by Billy Wilder an Austrian born, American filmmaker of sixty films. The movie is almost 67
years old and when it was first released the movie was nominated for eleven Academy Awards, ranked
number twelve on the American Film Institutes list of the 100 best American films in 1998, and
worshipped by many critics. Although the movie was not released in my time, this classic has

Most actors do not continue making films one after another until they die but Norma could not get this
into her head. She spent years writing her script to return to the big screen and was set on that dream.
Since Norma was obsessed with the goal of filming again it led her to become foolish about how
famous she actually was and her terrible script. Also a scary realization of having a chance of ending
up demented like Norma. The directors wanted to show us a alarming visual of what life could be like
for actors after their acting days were over.
I recommend this film for anybody that is interested in movies with the genre drama. The film refers
to many references to past Hollywood and screenwriters, so it would help if you know a little bit of
that background to have a better understanding to what the actors are saying. But I enjoyed the plot

In The Modern World, Due To Advancement In Science And
In the modern world, due to advancement in science and technology people are able to accumulate
information through various modes other than reading. Yet, reading continues to provide maximum
pleasure and knowledge. It is commonly observed that those who read more excel in all the areas of
academic life. Reading helps us to understand the thoughts and feelings of various writers. It improves
our way of expression and creativity.
Reading is about understanding the written texts. It can be either intensive or extensive. Intensive
reading is a minute and detailed study of the prescribed prose text by concentrating on language and

English is learnt because it assimilates vocabulary from other languages. This makes it a rich and a
powerful tool of learning. Furthermore it shapes the political, social, economic, intellectual and
cultural life of the country. Its vast literature on varied subjects like science, commerce and humanities
makes it an important knowledge imparting language. It is a passport for better career and better pay.
In this context the Kothari commission has rightly recommended that English is a library language
(Puri, 2009). Proficiency in this language is an essential requisite for seeking degree in India. In view
of this, students at high school level learn three language formulae (Regional language, English and
National Language) and at the college level they learn two language formulae (English and any other
language). But in Indian context many may have to learn an additional language, as their mother
tongue and regional languages are not the same. Consequently they do not end up being proficient in
any of the languages.
India is a multilingual country and most of the students here use more than two languages in their
classrooms. Moreover the students are permitted to answer the examination in Vernacular languages at
all the levels including higher education. Hence they don t feel the need to improve their English
language proficiency and read any literature in English (Shiakh Pathan, 2012). Added to this, the
schools as well as colleges have not been successful in

Comparing Kripke s Naming And Necessity
In Naming and Necessity , Philosopher Saul Kripke believes that there are some contingent truths that
can be known a priori, or independent of experience. It is standard to believe that a priori truths
coincide with necessary truths rather than with contingent. I will argue in agreeance with Kripke.
There are cases in which contingent a priori truths exist.
A priori knowledge is knowledge gained independent of experience. It is the knowledge that can be
gained from learning the language, but without actual experience or need to consult the external
world. For example, someone who knows that All bachelors are unmarried men does not need to
experience being unmarried to defend this statement. By having knowledge of the language, one
knows that, by definition, a bachelor is an unmarried man.
By contrast, a posteriori propositions can only be known through experience of the external world. If I
say that It is windy outside , then in order to understand this proposition I must have experience of the
weather.
A necessary truth is a truth that could not be false, where a contingent truth is one that could be false.
If you could alter the universe in any possible way, the necessary truths will not change compared to
the contingent truths. The typical way ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

It is estimated that each year approximately 1060 pregnant women suffer brain death worldwide
(somatic support). There are many ethical dilemmas wrapped into this one scenario making it difficult
to navigate for healthcare providers. Each state has individual laws regarding treatment of pregnant
women unable to make healthcare decisions. In Pennsylvania, the law necessitates life sustaining
treatment, including nutrition and hydration to pregnant women who are unable to make healthcare
decisions and have an end stage medical condition. The only exceptions to this law require an
attending physician and an obstetrician to agree that providing life sustaining treatment (1) will not
maintain the pregnant woman in such a way as to permit the continuing development and live birth of
the unborn child; (2) will be physically harmful to the pregnant woman; or (3) will cause pain to the
pregnant woman that cannot be alleviated by medication. (Title 20 Ch 54 A 5429) Although this law
seems clear, interpretations may differ due to case by case differences and gray areas.
Per the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), a diagnosis of brain death is
considered legally and clinically dead. It is evidenced by coma, absence of brainstem reflexes and
apnea, and is defined as an irreversible loss of brain function. (Brain Death) As a healthcare provider,

New Opportunities And Safe Loan Standards For Home Ownership
As American as apple pie, home ownership is a quintessential part of many American s dream.
Making this dream a reality requires hard work, perseverance, and an understanding of the housing
market and loan options. It also requires a confidence in the economy and job market that many
people justifiably do not have after a devastating housing crash. However, as our nation recovers from
this crisis, we look ahead to new opportunities and safe loan standards for home ownership. Like a

reentering the housing market after a foreclosure or short sale are able to qualify for loans, but they are

The Attacks on September 11th 2001
September 11th of 2001 is a day in history that will be remembered forever. What was first thought to

morning of the attacks a group of al Qaeda terrorists took control of four commercial jetliners headed
to California and purposively crashed two into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. The last
plane fell into a Pennsylvania field never reaching its final destination, The White House. These

Nearly thirty minutes after the terrorists launched their take over, the passengers charged the cockpit
door. The hijackers attempted knocking the passengers off balance by pitching the nose of the airplane
up and down. The passengers did not give up; they continued their assault until the hijacker knew they
were about to break through. The flight was going over Shanksville, Pennsylvania and the pilot
decided to aim the airplane going 580 miles per hour into an abandoned field only about twenty
minutes from its original target, Washington, D.C. where they planned on attacking the White House
(CNN). After the attack all that was left was death and wreckage. Shortly after the demolition many
engineers, contractors, ironworkers and rescue workers went to help the police and firefighters with
volunteer work to help the victims. All of these people were very concerned with recovering any
survivors that were trapped within the soldering wreckage. Large pieces of iron that fell from the
wreckage needed to be moved from the scene and required larger machines to do so. Over 108

Because government organizations are the stakeholders with the majority of power, they play a pivotal
role in conservation efforts. The site at Alameda Point has been greatly influenced by the government
and government organizations. The United States Navy, which owned the property at Alameda Point
until 1992, had participated in tern conservation. However, the Navy hindered the efforts to make the
site into a wildlife refuge, by refusing to transfer the site to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The
transfer refusal was mainly about site contaminants, which the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service did not
want to accept responsibility for due to the fact that the Navy has a much larger budget than the Fish
and Wildlife Service. The Navy later solicited the Department of Veterans Affairs, who needed
modernized services for veterans in the San Francisco Bay Area, and the transfer occurred in June of
2014. This resulted in 512 acres being set aside as a wildlife reserve, but without the protection that a
national wildlife refuge entails (Feeney, pers comm, 2015). Although government organizations may
serve to hinder conservation efforts, they can also play a major role in collaborating with non profit
organizations. In the South Bay seventy five percent of the land that Snowy Plovers inhabit are owned

Learning the Process of Writing in a First-Year...
I entered my first year college composition course believing I was equipped with the knowledge, skill,
and ability to write an efficiently researched and well organized essay. In high school, I learned how to
create the traditional five paragraph paper with its introduction of a thesis, explanation of that claim
through three sections riddled with supporting quotes, and conclusion that restated the author s
substantiated statement. This was the prescribed formula I had learned and grown accustomed to using
for book reports, compare and contrast papers, and research essays and, from my bestowment of high
grades and praise, I d never thought to question or deviate from its pattern. When I attended my first

For the second paper, an essay about a remembered event, Professor Cardinale assigned five
prewriting exercises to the class. These included a freewriting about multiple past events, a recreation
of the dialogue that occurred during one of these events, a freewriting on memorabilia connected to
the occasion, a reflection of the event s significance on the student s life, and finally a culmination of
all the prewriting to create an outline for the essay. These multiple prewriting exercises helped me
uncover, explore, and convey different emotions through my writing. I didn t have to worry about
perfecting these exercises because the professor did not grade the grammar or context of the prewrites
and instead provided suggestions and helpful comments to enhance the essay. Murray explains this
alternative to grading, he says, We have to respect the student, not for his product, not for the paper we
call literature by giving it a grade, but for the search for truth in which he is engaged. We must listen
carefully for those words that may reveal a truth, that may reveal a voice (5). My writing seemed to
become more authentic and it was easier to flow from sentence to sentence because I already knew
what I wanted to say and why it was important for me to convey it to my readers. After finishing the
prewriting exercises, Professor Cardinale would have the class write a first draft of

Primate Morphology For The Lemur Catta
This paper will discuss primate morphology for the Lemur catta, also known as the ring tailed lemur,
what characterizes them as primates, how they react in their environment, and their social and
adaptive behaviors in that environment. The Lemur catta and it is only found in the island of
Madagascar, as well as off the coast of southeast Africa. In Madagascar, they reside in the
southeastern portion anywhere from sea level, up to 8530 feet high. Their environment consists
mainly of tropical forested area in the proximity of nine forests: Andohahela, Andringitra, Ankilitelo,
Berenty, Beza Mahafaly, Isalo, Tsimanampetsotsa, Tsirave, and Zombitse (Godfrey et al. 1998).
According to the National Primate Research Center (pin.primate.wisc.edu), they also have a variety of
habitats for example rainforests, spiny bush forests, subalpine, deciduous, and gallery. However, a lot
of their habitat has been affected by constant human contact; agricultural clearing, deforestation, and
burning to produce charcoal. The Lemur catta need to be able to hide in the forest and they are not
very good at adapting to new environments so they depend a lot on the forested areas. The southwest
part of Madagascar is very prone to droughts and they can have serious effects on the habitats of ring
tailed lemurs and other mammals. I will discuss what makes the Lemur catta a primate and the primate
characteristics that they possess. Then, I will express the specialized, physical characteristics that they

Catcher In The Rye Compare Contrast Essay
Recovering from trauma is often a difficult and painstaking journey. In the novel, The Catcher in the
Rye and the movie Ordinary People, two characters named Holden Caulfield and Conrad Jarrett
struggle with their lives in their own bildungsromans, stories about the coming of age. When their
brothers die, both Holden and Conrad suffer emotional trauma which causes them to push people
away. These episodes complicate their efforts to connect with people and further meddle with their
recovery from the trauma of loss. However, while Holden s cynicism constantly holds him back,
Conrad s desire to recover overshadows his habit of pushing people away. Holden Caulfield s
cynicism causes his habit of pushing people away, which conveys the emotional ... Show more content

After his episodes, his guilt causes him to push others away. For example, he beats up Stillman after
being provoked. After, Lazenby, a good friend, checks up on Conrad and tries to talk to him. However,
because Lazenby was also good friends with Buck, Conrad s dead brother, Conrad cannot stand to be
around Lazenby because it hurts too much to be around [him]. Lazenby becomes a constant reminder
of Buck s death, which is why Conrad pushes his good friend away. Conrad s anger continues when
his mother discovers he has quit the swim team. After Conrad lashes out at his mother, his father
desperately begs Conrad to confide in him. Again, Conrad pushes his father away, telling him to leave
even though his father genuinely wants to help. Similarly, Conrad seethes with anger on the drive
home after a date with Jeannine, a classmate, because she laughed at the drunks who disrupted their
date. Jeannine attempts conversation, but Conrad replies curtly, which in turn disheartens Jeannine to
eventually stop talking. Conrad s consistent outbursts of anger stem from holding in his feelings from
his brother s death for far too long. Like Holden, Conrad s emotional trauma causes him to push others
away, ruining their efforts to connect with people and further complicating their efforts to recover.
However, unlike Holden, Conrad recognizes his problem and desires to get

Similarities Between Taoism And Confucianism
The sixth century B.C.E. was an extraordinary era of reflective development for ancient China. During
this time, there were two prominent religious leaders that were inhabitants of China, Confucius and
Lao tzu, are believed to have lived and instructed. The fundamental concepts that were exhibited,
Taoism and Confucianism, presented concurrently in dynastic China. This lured an infinite amount of
followers during the period of over 2,000 years (UShistory.org, 2018). The beliefs that these two
mythical individuals composed remain in formidable fashion even today. As with any other religion,
there exist similarities and differences between Taoism and Confucianism that will be discussed.

First of all, Confucianism emphasizes on accomplishing Tao in human existence. Also, Confucianism
is not a religion but more of a method of behaving so individuals exercise the correct things. Taoism
concentrates on executing the Tao, predominantly on the religious contents of life; and it is other
worldly and possibly is referred to as a religion. Some skeptics have disputed that Taoism is not a
religion. Taoism is considered a philosophy, a method of surveying life and a way of meditating about
things. Furthermore, Confucianism believes that knowledge and instruction are vitally important.
Confucius displayed urgency on learning by which he set a standard of the continuity of learning
throughout his life (Cheng, 2011). On the other hand, Taoism accentuates on unlearning and this could
be viewed as being effortless which could result in both smart and worthy. Lao Tzu inspired
individuals to uneducated their learning to prevent any anxiety. Planeness is encircled and it lacks

In this paper, we will discuss the four market structures of Monopoly, Oligopoly, Monopolistic
Competition and Pure Competition. We have identified four companies that operate in each of these
market structures: Salt River Project, The Coca Cola Company, Russ s Market, and Columbia House.
In each market structure we will describe the pricing and non pricing strategies of the companies
operating in that market. We will also examine Quasar, a notebook computer company. They entered

Therefore, the oligopolistic firm has little to gain from utilizing pricing strategies that results in rigid
or inflexible prices. Oligopolistic firms rely on non pricing strategies of competition such as
advertising, product differentiation, and barriers to entry. The goal for oligopolies is to increase market
share while keeping price constant. The Coca Cola Company is the global leader for carbonated soft
drinks (Carbonated Soft Drinks Industry Profile: United States, 2005). In 2004, Coca Cola had a 44%
volume of the U.S. market, PepsiCo, Inc. had a 31.1% share, Cadbury Schweppes p/c had 15.2%
(Carbonated Soft Drinks Industry Profile: United States, 2005). The Coca Cola Company, PepsiCo,
Inc. and Cadbury Schweppes p/c hold 90.3% market share of carbonated soft drink (CSD) sales in the
U.S. while private label brands have only 0.4% share of the market (Carbonated Soft Drinks Industry

whereby it is the largest of three oligopolistic CSD companies in the U.S. market, offers differentiated
carbonated soft drink products, controls price with mutual interdependence, limits barriers to entry by
significant brand recognition and trademarks and has a high concentration ratio of 44%. Pricing

John Winthrop And John Adams
John Winthrop and John Adams and their respective works were heavily influenced by their times.
Winthrop was a devout Puritan Christian that was escaping a persecuting king in the early to mid
seventeenth century. As a learned and religious man, he came to be the leader of this puritan sect that
was to establish a society unlike any other, free from religious corruption that his fellow people saw in
the Church of England, that would be a model community much like the Citty upon a Hill described in
the bible. On the other hand, John Adams experienced the tyranny of the British monarchy in a
contrasting way. This era was marked with worsened conditions for American colonists in terms of
economic and social taxations. Their literary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Winthrop s political theory developed from an early age. As a religious man, one would expect him to
be a preacher, but he found his calling through law and leadership. Because he was such a devout
Puritan, he was chosen to spearhead the project of establishing the Massachusetts Bay Colony, which
was originally purposed for economic uses. This changed when the group elected him as governor,
which altered the purpose of the colony to be more religious in nature. As a result, this group of
Christians made an exodus from the old world with the mindset of establishing a true Christian society
, much like the Jews fleeing from Egypt, as described in the first testament, book of Exodus in the
Bible. They felt it was not only a privilege but a duty of God, and as the metaphorical and literal hands
of God, to uphold the values of a true Puritan society. This cemented in him a purpose to erect a
community that would be that Citty on a Hill that is so famously quoted.
In his address upon the Arabella, Winthrop reasoned that a society cannot have liberty without certain
guidelines. Although similar to the social contract theory of Hobbes, who argued for a strong central
government to prevent the evils that humanity naturally expresses, Winthrop argued for a strong
government that would not only prevent the sinful ways of people, but to create an environment that
Christians could fulfill their godly purposes it its

The And Of The Hebrew Bible
A man once said, Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one s life for one s friends (John
15:13). This belief is shared by the tribes of Israel featured in the Hebrew Bible. This small nation
requires each Israelite to be willing to die for the moral code and religious statutes handed down by
their god, Yahweh. This ideal of selflessness is evident throughout the Hebrew Bible, but especially so
in the stories of two midwives, the mother of Moses, and a prophet called Amos. Here, Israelites show
the importance of being willing to sacrifice anything for their society in the forms of their community,
their family, and their God. In the very first chapter of Exodus there are two women who emerge as
unlikely heroes. The tyrannical king of the Egypt gave two Hebrew midwives strict orders to, observe
[the Hebrew women] as they deliver. If the child is a son, kill him, but if it is a daughter, she may live
(Exodus 1:16). However, instead of obeying their oppressor, Shiphrah and Puah let the male infants
live. When pharaoh questioned the midwives as to why male babies were surviving, they pushed their
defiance further by lying to him. As a result of Shiphrah and Puah s actions the Israelites, multiplied
and became very numerous (Exodus 1:20). If the midwifes had been caught in their deceit they would
have been killed. Instead, they were willing to risk their lives in order to help protect their community
s youngest generation and therefore the nation s future. The

Genetically Modified Foods Argument Essay
One of the main concerns of today s generation is health. Many people are concerned with staying fit,
which means working out and eating healthy. Currently, today s generation is at a crossroad between
what is considered healthy and the price of being healthy. The biggest concern revolves around
Genetically Modified Organisms or GMOs. GMOs are scientifically modified foods or hormones used
to increase food production and reduce the number of pesticides and disease a crop or organism may
be susceptible to. So what is the big concern? Consumers are wary of eating the unknown. Many are
scared to eat GMOs due to an irrational fear of disease. Consumers tend to overreact about Genetically
Modified foods without truly understanding the purpose of GMOs. GMOs make up the many of the
foods we eat today. In fact, Barlett Steele reports that about 90 percent of soybeans, the main
ingredient in almost all the foods we eat, are genetically modified (p.821). Genetically modified seeds
are also present in the foods farm animals eat. The main producer of genetically modified seeds,
Monsanto, has made seeds that are resistant to a pesticide from the brand name Roundup. Roundup

injected with a genetically modified hormone to encourage milk production. This chemical, rBGH is
proven to not be harmful to humans but can be harmful in animals because it speeds up their
metabolism and increases the cows chance of early death (Barlett Steele). This raises many debates
about artificial hormones. While these hormones do not affect humans, cows are severely affected and
injecting them with these hormones can be considered animal abuse. Ultimately, this debate is settled
by the consumers. Dairy farmers label their milk and it is up to the consumer to decide if they want to

Imobilizing Enzymes
The purpose of immobilising enzymes before they are used to catalyse a reaction is to be reused again
because they are not completely lost in the solution. We immobilised lactase enzyme by dissolving it
in sodium alginate gel. This is one of the more widely used practises in industry as it is very efficient
and effective. We can see that by our experiment by immobilising the enzyme and could retain it even
after it has been involved in the reaction by catalysing the breakdown of lactose in glucose and
galactose.
Lactose was contained within the milk and as the milk met the immobilised lactase, it began to break
down into glucose and galactose. The results show, as the lactose in the milk was left to the lactase for
longer, the break down into glucose and galactose increased. This can be seen by the colour change.
To begin with we tested the milk for glucose by dipping the clinistix before the treatment and the
result was negative, showing that no glucose was present. Once the milk was exposed in the lactase
enzyme for 5 minutes it had already begun to break down into glucose and galactose, the first test
showed some signs of glucose as had turned from blue to light green. As the experiment progressed

In Henrik Isben s Hedda Gabler, he masterfully portrays the main character,
Hedda, as neither a monster nor a saint . . . [she] is simply a tragic character who is destroyed by the
unharmonious and irreconciliable contrasts in her own character. Ibsen first expressed Hedda s
emotional sterility by showing how she is unable to reciprocate in a relationship. Hedda s lack of
freedom to act independently in the society that caused her to believe that she would find an answer in
manipulation causes her to come face to face with reality. She is forced to realize that her efforts are
futile and her manipulation is only hurting herself. Like a young child, she can only receive without
knowing how to give in return. This highly intense interest with the lives of others is another aspect of
her emotionally empty life. While at the same time of investigating and analyzing other people s lives
is one way for Hedda to gain some understanding of her own unsatisfied self, she ultimately reveals
that she herself is very frail, fragile, and self centered. It is this indeed that puts Hedda on her path to a
tragic destruction, a path that is being taken rather quickly. Another way in which Isben displays her
thirst for more in her life is when Hedda burns the manuscript. Hedda feels that somehow destroying
something that she should have been able to create in the first place will make her feel

  • 2. Rhetorical Reading Joshua Stonehocker Steven Gibson English 1010 046 March 28th, 2005 Rhetorical Reading Essay(Revision) Since they started pouring the concrete for the dam Lake Powell has been a center of controversy. From nature preservationists to ancient ruins advocates the subject has been heated and intense. On the other hand, those who support Lake Powell are just as avid and active in their defense of the reservoir. One of the former, Edward Abbey, sets forth his plea, hoping it does not fall upon deaf ears. Abbey attempts in his article to help the reader visualize Glen Canyon before it was dammed up. He uses a lot of pathos to help the reader feel the beauty of the previous Glen Canyon and the ugliness of the present. His article ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Certainly it has a photogenic backdrop of buttes and mesas, projecting above the expansive surface of stagnant waters where the speedboats, houseboats and cabin cruisers play. But it is no longer a wilderness (146) Were we to reverse the order and take out the connotations, it would be a great statement supporting Lake Powell. Certainly it is no longer a wilderness, but it has a photogenic backdrop of buttes and mesas, projecting above the expansive surface of waters where the speedboats, houseboats and cabin cruisers play. One rhetorical strategy he uses fairly well is the omission of details. I will be the first to admit that the creating of any reservoir will kill any life that it floods out, which is obvious, but in this case I believe that the pros far outweigh the cons. Abbey used omission of details to make it seem that the reservoir had killed all wildlife in that area and desolated the environment, saying that after draining the dam, plant life will come back, [w]ith the renewal of plant life will come the insects, the birds, the lizards, and snakes, the mammals. However, Lake Powell is teeming with life. According to the Lake Powell website, it is home to over 170 species of birds, 800 different mammals and more that a dozen reptile species (Lake Powell). And anyone who has been there will ask, if there is a slight lack of insects, which I am not sure ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Neurodevelopmental and Neurocognitive Disorders Essay Neurodevelopmental and Neurocognitive Disorders Until the twentieth century, little account was taken of the special characteristics of psychopathology in children; maladaptive patterns considered relatively specific to childhood, such as autism, received virtually no attention at all (Butcher Hooley, 2014). Today there is more attention paid to children with maladaptive behaviors and scientific research has been done that demands more attention is paid to specific children s behaviors, not the behaviors of adult as there are no fair comparisons that allow the diagnosis and treatments of adult and children s behaviors to be equal. Neurodevelopment disorders in children result in maladaptive behavior which appears in different life ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... N., Hooley, J. M., Mineka, 2014). The causal factors for ADHD in children have been much debated. It still remains unclear to what extent the disorder results from environmental or biological factors (Carr et al., 2006; Hinshaw et al., 2007), and recent researchers believe that biological factors such as genetic inheritance will turn out to be important precursors to the development of ADHD (Durston, 2003). But firm conclusions about any biological basis for ADHD must await further research (Butcher Hooley, 2014, p. 513). Treatment for ADHD that focuses on controlling behavior with drugs has been promising. One particular treatment involved the effectiveness of MTA fading procedures. According to the article, the findings suggest that in contrast to the hypothesized deterioration in the relative benefit of behavioral modification between nine and 14 months (after completion of fading), the MTA behavior generalization and maintenance procedures implemented through nine months apparently yield continuing improvement through 14 months, with preservation of the relative position of behavior compared ... • 4. Freedom Riders Equality was not even twenty four hours and the KKK embarked on the attacks once again (117). With attacks continued on by the KKK other steps were trying to be made in racial equality. Occurring before the time of the KKK s start of their attacks were the Freedom Rides looking for racial equality on the transportation services. Raymond Arsenault discusses in his book Freedom Riders 1961 and the Struggle for Racial Justice that the Freedom Rides began after the blacks were forced to give up their bus seat, so that whites could sit, Irene Morgan first experienced this when she was forced by the driver to remove herself from the seat in 1944 (14). Arsenault finds that the rides made their way all of the south of the United States going from Florida to Northern Virginia toward the west in Illinois and through Missouri and heading as west as Texas and California (220 221). John A. Kirk writes in his article Battle Cry of Freedom: Little Rock, Arkansas and The Freedom Riders at Fifty that the riders were surged on by the Congress of Racial Equality(CORE). The riders route was planned to ride from St, Louis, Little Rock, Shreveport, and finally stopping in New Orleans. They would later leave New Orleans headed ... Law enforcement officials may not have been there to aide in the physical aspects of the attacks, but they were there to help them get away with it. • 5. Popularised Explanation Of Memory Memory is a complicated topic to describe, as its role, theory and application differs from person to person. A popularised explanation of memory involves a tiered or levelled approach, ranging from a holistic to a reductionist description (Bilkey, 2016). The Social and cultural level of memory refers to information stored in museums, libraries and oral history. Individual memory is another level of description, and is specific to the person; what they did that day, or ate for example. At the reductionist spectrum of memory is the biological level, describing the fundamental process in the body that lead to memory formation, such as synaptic modulation and information encoding in DNA (Bilkey, 2016). • 6. Pawel Kuczynski s Art Essay Phones are the easiest and most common way to get connected. Through his art, Pawel Kuczynski is warning the audience of problems that phones cause among people. The artist has created many paintings to convey the idea of technology causing people to become separated and disconnected from one another. Kuczynski s art could be seen as a metaphor for young people, being connected through technology but still isolated in loneliness. Phones are most likely the most commonly used source of communication in the world; which begs the question of how they could possibly be disconnecting people. The title alone, Islands, suggests to the audience a sense of distance and isolation. That is also conveyed in the painting itself with the use of perspective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The title again has reference to the picture but doesn t convey the actual meaning. There is a person scrolling through their phone while the snow falls. The person has been there so long that a snow man was made on his back. This another great use of satire by Kuczynski. He has developed such a playful way of calling attention to these overarching societal problems that no one really seems to be talking about. The person in the picture isn t really living his life. All of his time has been consumed with the phone that only has virtual images on it. It s crazy how technology has done the opposite of what it was intended to do. Instead of playing in the snow with his friends his just sitting out in the cold all alone. Every time I go out I notice fewer people communicating with one another verbally. The common thought is that social media, phones, and just technology in general connects people of all kinds across the globe. Connecting with people through the use of technology has a few positives but what about the overwhelming negative aspects. Millions of people can connect to children and other adults with horrifying intentions. Cyberbullying is becoming prevalent in schools. Kids are being exposed to things they shouldn t be. Predators lurk online all the time. Technology is expanding every day and more people are able to gain access to it. A CNN article stated that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Arab-Israeli Conflict In The 1800s The Arab Israeli conflict has been an ongoing issue from the 1800s. The conflict is based on the struggle for land for both the Jews and the Arabs. When the 1947 partition plan was established by the United Nations to split Palestine into two states, the Palestinian Arab people ended up with less land than the Jewish (Jewish 56 percent and Arabs 43 percent of Palestine). This decision lead to war between the two groups, meaning that there was no peace. The Arabs have been through a lot since the Partition plan came into play. Not only do they have to share land with the Jews, but after the partition plan, the Jews threated and killed some of the Arabs out of their own country, which resulted in them becoming refugees. Both parties believe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... More violence and tension followed after the Jewish National Fund purchased land from some Arab landowners, meaning that the Arabs in the area were evicted. To make the Arabs happy and stop revolting against the British, they released the White Paper that limited future Jewish migration, land purchases and promised independence for the Arabs. The Jews felt like this was betrayal to the Balfour Declaration. Both the Arabs and the Jews have felt betrayed by the decisions made concerning them. For the Arabs, it was when the Balfour Declaration was made and stated it was in great favour of the national home in Palestine for the Jews and when the partition plan came out. For the Jews it was when the white paper limited Jewish migration and land promises. Furthermore, it resulted into fights among the two groups. Sunset Boulevard Movie Analysis Nuntida Nuampatom Mr. Kastor AMH 2020 US History II 04 September 2016 Sunset Boulevard (1950) Sunset Boulevard, a classic black and white movie that displays what Hollywood actually consists of. Directed by Billy Wilder an Austrian born, American filmmaker of sixty films. The movie is almost 67 years old and when it was first released the movie was nominated for eleven Academy Awards, ranked number twelve on the American Film Institutes list of the 100 best American films in 1998, and worshipped by many critics. Although the movie was not released in my time, this classic has definitely got me interested in movies similar to this love story with a crazed ending. Most actors do not continue making films one after another until they die but Norma could not get this into her head. She spent years writing her script to return to the big screen and was set on that dream. Since Norma was obsessed with the goal of filming again it led her to become foolish about how famous she actually was and her terrible script. Also a scary realization of having a chance of ending up demented like Norma. The directors wanted to show us a alarming visual of what life could be like for actors after their acting days were over. I recommend this film for anybody that is interested in movies with the genre drama. The film refers to many references to past Hollywood and screenwriters, so it would help if you know a little bit of that background to have a better understanding to what the actors are saying. But I enjoyed the plot twists, astounding acting, and shocking ending. I actually asked my friend to watch the film by herself since the film was available on Netflix. In this context the Kothari commission has rightly recommended that English is a library language (Puri, 2009). Proficiency in this language is an essential requisite for seeking degree in India. In view of this, students at high school level learn three language formulae (Regional language, English and National Language) and at the college level they learn two language formulae (English and any other language). But in Indian context many may have to learn an additional language, as their mother tongue and regional languages are not the same. Consequently they do not end up being proficient in any of the languages. India is a multilingual country and most of the students here use more than two languages in their classrooms. Moreover the students are permitted to answer the examination in Vernacular languages at all the levels including higher education. Hence they don t feel the need to improve their English language proficiency and read any literature in English (Shiakh Pathan, 2012). • 10. Comparing Kripke s Naming And Necessity In Naming and Necessity , Philosopher Saul Kripke believes that there are some contingent truths that can be known a priori, or independent of experience. It is standard to believe that a priori truths coincide with necessary truths rather than with contingent. I will argue in agreeance with Kripke. There are cases in which contingent a priori truths exist. A priori knowledge is knowledge gained independent of experience. It is the knowledge that can be gained from learning the language, but without actual experience or need to consult the external world. For example, someone who knows that All bachelors are unmarried men does not need to experience being unmarried to defend this statement. By having knowledge of the language, one knows that, by definition, a bachelor is an unmarried man. By contrast, a posteriori propositions can only be known through experience of the external world. If I say that It is windy outside , then in order to understand this proposition I must have experience of the weather. A necessary truth is a truth that could not be false, where a contingent truth is one that could be false. If you could alter the universe in any possible way, the necessary truths will not change compared to the contingent truths. The typical way ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are many ethical dilemmas wrapped into this one scenario making it difficult to navigate for healthcare providers. Each state has individual laws regarding treatment of pregnant women unable to make healthcare decisions. In Pennsylvania, the law necessitates life sustaining treatment, including nutrition and hydration to pregnant women who are unable to make healthcare decisions and have an end stage medical condition. The only exceptions to this law require an attending physician and an obstetrician to agree that providing life sustaining treatment (1) will not maintain the pregnant woman in such a way as to permit the continuing development and live birth of the unborn child; (2) will be physically harmful to the pregnant woman; or (3) will cause pain to the pregnant woman that cannot be alleviated by medication. This belief is shared by the tribes of Israel featured in the Hebrew Bible. This small nation requires each Israelite to be willing to die for the moral code and religious statutes handed down by their god, Yahweh. This ideal of selflessness is evident throughout the Hebrew Bible, but especially so in the stories of two midwives, the mother of Moses, and a prophet called Amos. Here, Israelites show the importance of being willing to sacrifice anything for their society in the forms of their community, their family, and their God. • 29. Genetically Modified Foods Argument Essay One of the main concerns of today s generation is health. Many people are concerned with staying fit, which means working out and eating healthy. Currently, today s generation is at a crossroad between what is considered healthy and the price of being healthy. The biggest concern revolves around Genetically Modified Organisms or GMOs. GMOs are scientifically modified foods or hormones used to increase food production and reduce the number of pesticides and disease a crop or organism may be susceptible to. So what is the big concern? Consumers are wary of eating the unknown. Many are scared to eat GMOs due to an irrational fear of disease. Consumers tend to overreact about Genetically Modified foods without truly understanding the purpose of GMOs. GMOs make up the many of the foods we eat today. In fact, Barlett Steele reports that about 90 percent of soybeans, the main ingredient in almost all the foods we eat, are genetically modified (p.821). Genetically modified seeds are also present in the foods farm animals eat. The main producer of genetically modified seeds, Monsanto, has made seeds that are resistant to a pesticide from the brand name Roundup. Roundup Ready Seeds has made farming easier for farmers. Dairy cows are often injected with a genetically modified hormone to encourage milk production. This chemical, rBGH is proven to not be harmful to humans but can be harmful in animals because it speeds up their metabolism and increases the cows chance of early death (Barlett Steele). This raises many debates about artificial hormones. While these hormones do not affect humans, cows are severely affected and injecting them with these hormones can be considered animal abuse. Ultimately, this debate is settled by the consumers. Dairy farmers label their milk and it is up to the consumer to decide if they want to use the milk or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In a similar fashion the Integrity Management Program has integrated the use of software such as the geographic information system (GIS) for their Gas Transmission Earthquake Plan and Response Procedure. GIS has the ability to map PG E s gas line infrastructure in real time with the likelihood of failure. With the use of GIS, a response algorithm is created that uses known parameters such as soil, geographic, and topographic conditions. Possible scenarios are then constructed to map potential hazards and anomalies to PG E s pipeline ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. Imobilizing Enzymes The purpose of immobilising enzymes before they are used to catalyse a reaction is to be reused again because they are not completely lost in the solution. We immobilised lactase enzyme by dissolving it in sodium alginate gel. This is one of the more widely used practises in industry as it is very efficient and effective. We can see that by our experiment by immobilising the enzyme and could retain it even after it has been involved in the reaction by catalysing the breakdown of lactose in glucose and galactose. Lactose was contained within the milk and as the milk met the immobilised lactase, it began to break down into glucose and galactose. The results show, as the lactose in the milk was left to the lactase for longer, the break down into glucose and galactose increased. This can be seen by the colour change. To begin with we tested the milk for glucose by dipping the clinistix before the treatment and the result was negative, showing that no glucose was present. Once the milk was exposed in the lactase enzyme for 5 minutes it had already begun to break down into glucose and galactose, the first test showed some signs of glucose as had turned from blue to light green. As the experiment progressed and the milk was left in the lactase enzyme for longer, more and more was broken down into glucose and galactose, this is evident by ... In Henrik Isben s Hedda Gabler, he masterfully portrays the main character, Hedda, as neither a monster nor a saint . . . [she] is simply a tragic character who is destroyed by the unharmonious and irreconciliable contrasts in her own character. Ibsen first expressed Hedda s emotional sterility by showing how she is unable to reciprocate in a relationship. Hedda s lack of freedom to act independently in the society that caused her to believe that she would find an answer in manipulation causes her to come face to face with reality. She is forced to realize that her efforts are futile and her manipulation is only hurting herself. Like a young child, she can only receive without knowing how to give in return. This highly intense interest with the lives of others is another aspect of her emotionally empty life. While at the same time of investigating and analyzing other people s lives is one way for Hedda to gain some understanding of her own unsatisfied self, she ultimately reveals that she herself is very frail, fragile, and self centered. It is this indeed that puts Hedda on her path to a tragic destruction, a path that is being taken rather quickly. Another way in which Isben displays her thirst for more in her life is when Hedda burns the manuscript. Hedda feels that somehow destroying something that she should have been able to create in the first place will make her feel ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
