The Search for Redemption in the Kite Runner and Secret...
The search for Redemption
In a lifetime one will face many battles and deal with guilt as said nearly all men can stand adversity,
but if you want to test a man s character give him power (Abraham Lincoln). Guilt from deceiving
others or other immoral acts will result in one constantly searching for redemption. Khalid Hosseni s
novel Kite Runner and Shilpi Somaya Gowda s novel Secret Daughter revolve around betrayal and
redemption. Firstly, the search for personal redemption will strongly influence ones character.
Secondly, the bond a child forms with their parents will affect their actions. Lastly, the persistence of
the past will cloud one s ability to redeem their life. Throughout the novel the authors integrated the
themes of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As both characters lives are intertwined with guilt it shapes the decisions they make as Amir sets out
to make things right with Hassan, to prove he is not the selfish boy he once was and Kavita need to
find forgiveness within herself to be freed of her pain, just like Amir. Next, Amir and Jasu, Kavita s
husband in the novel secret daughter did not just ruin their lives; they destroyed the lives of others
around them. Amir making the choice to leave Hassan in the alley set the lives of both characters in
the novel I could step into that alley, stand up for Hassan the way he stood up for me all those times in
the past and accept whatever would happen to me or I could run. In the end, I ran (Hosseni, 84). Amir
s choice to run later impacted his father s life as he lost the chance to watch his son Hassan grow up.
Just as Jasu, forced Kavita to give up her 2 daughters we cannot keep her! ...she will become a burden
to us, a drain on our family! (Gowda 106 107). Just like Kavita is haunted by not having her daughters
with her, it is also disturbing Jasu. He knows what he did was wrong therefore he s been trying to
make up for it all his life. Both characters go through guilt and shame for the decisions they

Easter Island History
Easter Island is one of the world s most famous archaeological sites. But it is least visited. It is also
very isolated. It is located south of the equator and around 2200 miles off the Chile coast. The island
has three extinct volcanoes. But the island itself is just a massive volcano rising from the Pacific
Ocean floor. The oldest known name for Easter Island is Te Pito o Te Henua, which means the center
of the world. Tahitian sailors gave the island the name Rapa Nui in the 1860 s due to the fact that it
looked like another island in Polynesia called Rapa Iti. Easter Island got its name Easter Island from
the Dutch sea captain, Jacob Roggeveen.
Easter Island is primarily known for its huge stone statues, or Moai statues. They were in use as early
as 500 AD, carved between 1000 AD and 1650, and were still standing when Captain Jacob
Roggeveen visited the island in 1722. A few of the moai once had crowns or hats made of red volcano
stone. The purpose of it is still unknown, but archaeologist believed that they were linked or sacred to
a particular clan. The moai statues itself symbolized authority and power, both religiously and
politically. But how they were moved is still a big mystery til this day.
Easter Island is most important to today s modern world history. It shows us what will happen to our

less than 100 of these settlers. They stayed on Easter Island because there was plenty of fish, plants,
forests, and many more natural resources. There was plenty for everyone of it for everyone. They
developed a culture and had good lives as their population grew. But over the years, the population
started to grow larger and larger, way too large for the island to support them all. All the natural

Modern Day Era And Its Impact On Our Society
Humans have been communicating with each other as long as the human race can remember. It has
been the essences of our survival allowing us to be able to pass on our knowledge, express ideas, and
covey emotions. As time passed, we have learned different methods to communicate. For example, we
have learned to communicate with words and symbols which has helped us evolve and form a
foundation for our society. Words and symbols have allowed to us expand our ability to communicate
and the ability to express our ideas in a greater way. Typography has become one of the most
influential ways that we use to communicate in this modern day era; and it plays a major role in our
society. Typography essentially is found everywhere from posters to books, magazines to signs and
generally anywhere where type is involved. Now the history of type itself is quite long which
definitely states that type has come a long way and has a great history behind it. Two of the most well
known movements in type, which introduced new principals and brought change to type, would be the
Bauhaus movement and Futurist movement. These two movements have brought forth change and
principals that have influenced the typography work in todays world. In this essay I will be discussing
how the Bauhaus movement and the Futurist movement are different in terms of their philosophy of
type, the characteristics and works of art.
The philosophy of these two movements are different in terms of how they both follow

Essay on Child Development Observation
In this assignment I am going to describe a child observation that I have done in a nursery for twenty
minutes in a play setting. I will explain the strengths and weaknesses of naturalistic observation
through the key developmental milestones based in Mary Sheridan (2005) check list and provide a
theoretical explanation to support the naturalistic observation.
First of all I would like to explain why the child observation is important for social workers. It is
important because it focus on the problems that arise when a child s situation is not taken seriously
and consequently have harsh consequences for both worker and child (ClimbiĂŠ Report, 2002).
Observation is something that leads to formation of hypotheses and gives new insights ... Show more

At this stage, the child s thinking changes over time.
The observation made me reflect and discover the child s interests, I could assess his developmental
levels and I have observed what strategies were being used to attain their goals. After the observation I
reflected upon it and realised that I have learned a lot about their personalities and skills that they need
to practice.
Secondly, it is important to consider the strengths of naturalistic observation as a method. This was
identified when the child was consistently moving and doing different activities that allowed me to
understand how he communicates with other children, how he behaves and what he learns from
others. In the play setting the child was able to develop his thinking and according to the Framework
for the Assessment of Children in Need and their Families (DOH, 2000) through social relationships,
the child was encouraged to express his feelings, emotions, which was achieved by the setting creating
an enjoyment environment.
Cognitive developments allow the child to begin to understand and interact with the environment and
see things from the carer s point of view, adjusting behaviours accordingly and understanding that the
carer has goals and plans, therefore, and the relationship is seen as partnership. Cognitive skills are
necessary in adapting to the environment. As Hendey and Kloep (2002)

Reflection On Thomas Fellow And Reentko Concert
I saw Thomas Fellow and Reentko Dirks at Loyola Marymount University on March 25th. One thing
that I learned from the concert was that guitar is really something that brings people together because
there were quite a lot of people in attendance. I observed that both guitarists never really looked at
their music sheets when they played. They seem to have memorized the pieces that they were playing
and were playing off muscle memory, which is incredible. My impression of the concert was that it
was excellent. I really enjoyed it because there were a lot of different songs that were played with
different melodies. The first song that the duo played together called Prometheus was really well done
and the duo displayed great chemistry together. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He played a lot of soothing music compared to Prometheus, which I really liked. I thought it was also
incredible that he had another performance with the quartet right afterwards and already played
another show before he played at 3pm. Both guitarists made different types of sounds with their foot
and guitar such as tapping the guitar to create a non string sound. I thought that their stage presence
was really good because they had me engaged the whole time and really listen to their performance.
Additionally, I like how after every song the guitarists would talk a little bit about the history of the
song and how it came to be. It was especially interesting to hear how certain songs were made and the
inspiration behind them. Overall, I really enjoyed going to a classical guitar concert because I ve never

The Purpose Of Education By Martin Luther King Jr. And...
Bailey Nielsen

College Composition
20 January 2015
Education in Society Within the speeches The Purpose of Education by Martin Luther King Jr. and
Wiley College vs. Oklahoma City College from the movie The Great Debaters, there are many
different points that can be identified as ethos, pathos, or logos. Logos In The Purpose of Education,
King talks about how even though a person may be educated it doesn t necessarily mean that they are
intelligent. King mentions Eugene Talmadge, whom of which King believed had a better mind than
many in Georgia, yet Talmadge thought as King as an inferior being, but he was still considered
educated from every logical stand point. Ethos We are prone to let our mental life become invaded by
legions of half truths, prejudices, and propaganda. Many decisions within a day are controlled and
guided by the things that have already been said to be good . In order to be good and accepted in
society it has to come from source when is credible and reliable but for that to happen someone has to
have their own opinion on a matter but with the education system the way it is education is bias
knowledge. Pathos For the Wiley College vs. Oklahoma City College debate, the resolve is Negroes
should be admitted to state universities. Empathy is gained from the audience as the black students
make their case in support of the resolve. While the negative argued that a black student cannot
possible succeed in a white college, affirmative states

Faith And Faith In The Film The Book Of Eli
In this essay, I will discuss my opinions and knowledge based on the film The Book of Eli. Discussing
particularly the questions how faith plays into the ethical decisions regarding life and death. I do
believe Eli was justified in defending the weak by killing the strong. Eli used his faith for protection,
he fought against evil along with doing more for others than for himself. Throughout the whole film,
God and faith is strongly seen. To begin, I will discuss what role faith plays in.
When Eli is faced with conflict his actions may be seen unethical but I see it as protection. Since the
setting is post apocalyptic America, there is only so much you can do to protect yourself. The other

decision based on faith, you are going to be faced with consequences. Eli was a religious walker, he

The Galileo Controversy
The 17th century was full of challenges to the authority of the Catholic Church. Many of these
challenges were indirectly related to the Church s power, as they indicted the Church s teachings
rather than its authority. Those who disagreed with the Church formulated various theories that were
oppositional to those of the Church. In 1609,
Galileo made a revolutionary discovery. He utilized a telescope to gaze into the night sky, and found
that the sun was located at the center of the solar system. Furthermore, he found that the planets
revolved around the sun. These findings were against popular belief and that of the Church. Galileo
promoted his theory of heliocentrism through various writings and conversations with individuals, but
in 1633, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, in a private letter to the Duchess of Tuscany in 1615, Galileo defended his beliefs, expressing
that he did not believe that the same God who has given senses, reason and intellect has intended for
[them] to not use them. However, upon a closer reading of this evidence, one finds that Galileo never
opposed his alleged heresy in the letter. The weakness in this evidence is that it defends Galileo s
beliefs, contending that they may be true, but never addresses how it interacts with the beliefs of the
Church. Even if this letter were a perfect source, it would still not be able to show that Galileo was not
a heretic because Galileo never rejects the fact that his belief was different from the belief of the
Church. A heretic is one whose beliefs are at odds with the teachings of the Church, which means that
even if Galileo was correct in saying that the sun was at the center of the universe, he was still a
heretic for believing in a theory contrary to one taught by the Church. These alternative pieces of
evidence fail to definitively show that Galileo was not a

Arizona College And Career Ready Standards Policy Brief
To: Professor Stritch
From: Lexis Townsend
Date: November 14, 2014
Subject: Arizona College and Career Ready Standards Policy Brief
Policy and Background:
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were developed nationally in 2009 with the intent of
better preparing students for college, and their eventual careers. Faced with the option of whether to
adopt or reject CCSS, the state of Arizona chose the former. The Arizona College and Career Ready
Standards (AZCCRS) were officially adopted in 2010, with required implementation starting in the
2013 school year. The approved common core subjects are English and math, and place a heavy focus
on the development of real world, critical thinking skills. Common Core standards were adopted by
the state of Arizona because of the perceived need to enhance students abilities to transition from K 12
grade levels to college and the career world. The AZCCRS clearly dictate what Arizona children
should know at each grade level (Expect More Arizona, 2014) Aside from updating everyday
classroom standards, there has also been a push to replace the outdated Arizona s Instrument to
Measure Standards (AIMS) test. While there was debate over which standardize test to administer, the
state of Arizona has decided that Arizona s Measure of Educational Readiness to Inform Teaching
(AZMERIT) will be the best tool to measure the success of the new educational standards. As with
most new policies, there are strong opinions about the new standards.

The Economics of Prostate Cancer Screening Essay example
Introduction This paper will focus on the economics of prostate cancer screening. The American
Cancer Society states that cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and
spread of abnormal cells. If the spread is not controlled, it can result in death (10). According to the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cancer is the second leading cause of death. In 2002
alone, half a million Americans will die of this disease. Of this numerical figure, it is estimated that
perhaps more than 1,500 individuals a day will die. In addition, one of every four deaths in America is

An indicator of the future course of prostate cancer is predicted by tumor grade and stage. The age of
the patient does not seem to play a role in the rate at which tumors spread and become life threatening.
At the present moment, determining the stage of prostate cancer without surgery is unreliable. As soon
as the cancer spreads to bones or other organs, hormonal treatments can only achieve temporary
remissions often measured in months. African American men and men with a family history of
prostate cancer are at most risk. Statistical date presented by Philip W. Kantoff, MD, Associate
Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School and Director points out that among African
Americans, in the world, this population comprises 224 cases per 100,000. In comparison to other
populations, the incidence of prostate cancer in African Americans stands in stark contrast to the
incidence in white Americans with 150 cases per 100,000 and among men in Western Europe, 39.6
cases per 100,000, Japan, 8.5 cases per 100,000, and China, 1.1 cases per 100,000 (2). In addition to
being an African American male or a male with a family history of prostate cancer, recently, prior
vasectomy and a high fat diet has been proposed as possible additional risk factors. Along with these
factors, the probability of harboring asymptomatic prostate cancer increases as men age:
approximately 22 percent of men in their 60s and 39 percent in their 70s (2).

Why Accounting Is Basically A Language And Information...
Without accountancy businesses would find it hard to function Accounting Introduction Accounting is
basically a language: a language that provides knowledge and information about the financial position
of an organization. When we study accounting we are basically learning this expert language. By
learning this language we can analyse and understand the financial operations of any and all forms of
organizations. The accounting information be broken down into three core categories: Operating
Information Another term for operating information is day to day information . It is the type of
accounting information which is needed by the organization itself to conduct its business such as
paying the employees, tracking sales or payments from existing debtors and also information
regarding payments to creditors. The operating information is basically related to the working capital
of the business. Operating information comprises the supreme amount of accounting information and
also provides the foundation for the other two types of accounting information. Financial Accounting
Information This is the type of information that is used by stakeholders such as managers,
shareholders, creditors, banks, the public, the government, etc. to make choices involving the
organization and its activities. Shareholders would want information regarding their investment;
whether it is worth it and whether they should buy or sell shares, bankers and creditors would want to

In Cold Blood Rhetorical Devices
Truman Capote s In Cold Blood is a masterfully crafted book, often acclaimed for it s unique style.
Accordingly, readers mustn t look very far before they find a plethora of rhetoric. Capote is often
credited with having created the original crime novel, and he didn t get this distinction by writing like
everyone else. He used his interesting writing style to make his readers feel as though they were
actually in the book, but not just as an onlooker. He allowed them to get inside the character s heads
and really know them, glimpsing flash backs into the character s pasts, while also foreshadowing
events to come. He wrote with a very intricate style, but also one that ended up being incredibly
effective.
Capote was truly an artist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Often this foreshadowing was very subtle and easily overlooked if the reader wasn t careful. For
example, at the very bottom of page 108 and onto the top of page 109, Capote shares one of Dick s
thoughts regarding Perry s anger in which he says, The time had been when Dick had thought he could
control, could regulate the temperature of these sudden cold fevers that burned and chilled his friend.
He had been mistaken, and in the aftermath of that discovery, had grown very unsure of Perry... At
first glance this quote seems foreboding, but unless the reader has finished the book, they may not
notice the foreshadowing. At the end of the book it is reveled that Perry single handedly killed the
entire Clutter family, which is most likely the time when Dick made the discovery that there might be
something wrong with Perry. Capote hid his foreshadowing very well, so that it is often only found
once the event it foreshadowed had passed. However, this isn t to say that it was ineffective. His
foreshadowing served it s exact purpose, as readers who would notice the subtle hints would be drawn
in, curious to see what they were

institution into a college for the Deaf (Gallaudet, 1912). Kendall supported the idea and promised to
speak to the Board of Directors and solicit the aid of Congress (Gallaudet, 1912). While Kendall
would be the president of the Columbia Institution for the Instruction of Deaf and Dumb and Blind,

institution full collegiate powers in 1864. In 1865, the blind students at the institution were transferred

Impact Of The Nigerian Presidential Amnesty Program
In this paper, I estimate the impact of the Nigerian Presidential Amnesty Program (Amnesty), a local
form of Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR), on crude oil production in Nigeria.
The President of Nigeria announced the program on June 25th, 2009 which aimed to put an end to the
insurgency crisis experienced in the Niger Delta region, particularly between 2006 2009 which had led
to an average loss of about 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day (cited in Asuni, 2009) and which had
major implications for the government s revenue. Militants were given the opportunity for a state
pardon by submitting their weapons in exchange for empowerment training and monthly stipends of
N65,000 per month. I used a difference in difference approach and the results indicate an average
increase of about 73% in crude oil production in the treated states.
The production and export data for this work was retrieved from the Nigerian National Petroleum
Corporation (NNPC) database, the regulating body for the Oil and Gas industry, beginning from Q1,
2005, to Q4, 2013. I also collected crude oil prices from the British Petroleum website. Although the
Amnesty Program led to a significant increase in oil production, it does not necessarily suggest it is
the best policy that could have been adopted due to its challenges. Introduction The Niger Delta
region, the Nigeria crude oil base, had witnessed numerous protests at various times by its citizens
over resource wealth and control.

the American Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. It emerged from a student meeting organized by
Ella Baker held at Shaw University in April 1960. SNCC played a major role in the sit ins and
freedom rides, Mississippi Freedom Summer, and the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party over the
next few years. SNCC s major contribution was in its field work. The committee organized voter
registration drives all over the South, especially in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. In Freshwater

volunteers through training and then sent them throughout the south to teach in Freedom Schools to
children by day and voter registration classes for the adults by night. The SNCC s goal was to educate

I. Introduction a. Statement of the problem One of the most critical and gigantic problem which most
of the developing countries have been facing is that of poverty and special backwardness. These
countries tend to be very anxious to overcome these problems. During the last two decades these
developing countries have been initiating a number of development programmes and projects under
their development plans aiming at increasing production, adopting technologies for modernization and
social change, optimizing use of scarce resources, and above all raising the standard of living of the
millions of people condemned to poverty, inequality and unemployment. Thus the public sector
growth is one of the natural consequences of planned economy. It is the public enterprises which
constitute the most important Institutional framework for achieving these objectives. The problem of
poverty, inequality and stagnation in the developing countries to be as daunting as ever in spite of
massive programme of modernisation and social change were undertaken by these countries. This has
happened due to unsuccessful implementation of development projects. Existence of a plan does not
by any means ensure its effective implementation. Effective management is vital for the development
of any economy because development itself is the effect of a series of

Culture Changes During The Edo Period
Culture Changes during the Edo Period
The Edo Period in Japan (1600 1868) was ruled by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu who was appointed by
the Emperor. During this time, many changes happened to promote stability among the people and
Japan. Early The Shogun adoptive a system which was later called Neo Confucianism based on
Confucianism (From China). This system stressed the importance of morals, education and
hierarchical order in the government and society (Japan Guide.com).The Shogun needed to create
peace and by using segregation, there were four types of divisions during the Edo period. First at the
top was the Shogun and Samurai, they created structure and peace among the domains. Second in line
was the peasants because without them the most important need would not be filled which was food.
Artisans were third in line being they added some value for the reason that they produced goods like
swords for the Samurai, artwork, music, and painting/printing. Last on the list of importance was the
merchants. Merchants made money off people and therefor held no value to the Shogun. Due to a
closed door policy that was enforced by the Shogun hardly anything came into Japan without
permission during the Edo period. The Shogun also limited trade with other Western Nations and
prevented Japan from trading. For over 200 years Japan has little to do with trade outside with the
exception of a Dutch post in Nagasaki and maintaining relations with China and a post in Pusan where

Should The United States Be Allowed To Carry A Concealed...
It has been legal to carry a conceal weapon since 2013 when Illinois became the last state to allow
concealed weapon permits. After it passed a poll concluded that 52.3% of their population felt less
safe after it passed in 2013. According to a 2010 poll over 55% of our population felt less safe when
learning that it s legal to carry in public places.
You have to be a certain kind of person to be able to properly carry and operate without making it
obvious or having the risk of an accident. Some states are taking this to lightly. Georgia and Maryland
require no training before receiving their concealed permit. In Alaska, Arizona, Wyoming and
Vermont you don t need a permit to legally concealed carry. This should be taken more seriously. I
think that every state should force you to get training before having the chance to get a concealed
permit. If an uninformed person is carrying ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second amendment supports the right to carry a concealed weapon in public. Responsible citizens
should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon to defend themselves against criminals. Getting rid of
it would not help us it would just disarm our law abiding citizens. Meanwhile criminals would still
have their guns illegally. People get this because they it makes them feel safer when they are out in
public. People have are less likely to be attached if they have protection. According to Thomson
Reulers 75% of American citizens support law abiding citizens having a concealed carry permit. It is
also important because police can t always protect us. The average police response time is eleven

The Efficacy Of The Myers Briggs Type Indicator
Term Paper: An Evaluation of the Reliability of the Myers Briggs Type Indicator

An Evaluation of the Reliability of the Myers Briggs Type Indicator
The Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is an evaluative personality tool that is widely used
throughout the world today. It is important for a tool that is popularly utilized in a variety of fields and
at numerous professional institutions worldwide to be a credible one. So, is the MBTI really the valid
reliable personality inventory instrument it claims to be? Evaluating this tool will show that
empirically sound evidence does not exist to support the MBTI as an accurate, reliable, or valid
instrument for profiling one s personality type.
The MBTI questionnaire was created by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs
Myers. Their collaborative work to develop this measurement of personality was inspired by to the
writings/work of Carl Jung (more specifically his book entitled Psychological Type). This mother and
daughter s shared fascination and interest in type theory led them to create the MBTI in the early
1940s as a test to be used for personnel selection. Myers believed that different occupations favored
different personality orientations, and that Jung s theory provided a theoretical link between
personality and job performance (Pittenger, 1993). It is important to note that it was Myers belief that

My Philosophy Of My Personal Philosophy In The Classroom
All students are unique individuals, who have their own way of learning. Some students, might find it
easier to learn from hands on work rather than reading materials. Others, may be capable of learning
with just reading content. Since every student learns differently, I believe there isn t just one
philosophical way of how students should be taught. I would incorporate a couple different
philosophies and teaching mechanisms into my classroom. I also believe that the environment a child
is in impacts the way they learn. Students should have a set of rules to follow, but also be able to
express what they think and feel just as well. My personal philosophy is that there are numerous ways
to teach children the materials they need to know. Pragmatism is one philosophical theory I will
follow in my classroom. Since, this helps the development of practical knowledge, my students will be

The students will have an opportunity on the first day of class to come up with some more they think
should be followed. The rules will be as follows: Number one, be on time for class. This will help
them throughout life just as much as in the classroom. No matter what, in life you must be on time for
certain things. In a workplace you have a schedule to follow. I believe implementing certain rules
early in life gives the opportunity for success and good work ethic. Number two will be to complete
all tasks in a timely manner. This sets them up for a good work ethic also. If all tasks are completed on
time for the whole class, I will reward them by having a game day. Number three, no talking during
tests. If students are talking during a test, then that makes it hard to see if they need a different
learning method to catch on to the material. The class overall must follow all rules or there will be no
reward handed

Information System Based On Data Mining Techniques
Aims, objectives and possible outcomes The key aim of this project is to develop an information
system based on data mining techniques to build upon existing customer relationships and increase
profit. Part Parcel Computers has been at the forefront of the computer parts industry for the past
fifteen years. They have developed a reputation for the cheapest computer parts by focussing on a cost
leadership strategy. P P computers have a loyalty card programme that provides discounts and benefits
to its customers but has not used this collected data to specifically identify and target its loyal
customers. Unless P P computers build sales volume with the data, it is merely an overhead without
any tangible benefit (Cox, 2012). The objective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ultimately, P P computers can gain a competitive advantage through understanding the desires and
needs of their loyal customer base. Furthermore, this project will also use association rules within
customer segments to predict what items are most likely to be purchased together thus informing
future business decisions. Background: Loyalty programmes have rapidly proliferated in almost all
consumer focussed industries. In the United States alone, explicit opt in programme memberships
topped 2.6 billion in 2012 (IIDA, 2014). The vast amount of transactional and demographic data
gathered from loyalty programmes has been used by many organisations to drive business decisions.
The use of supervised and unsupervised learning has been used to gather different information about
customer desires, trends and loyalty. There are two primary modelling approaches, they are recency,
frequency and monetary (RFM) model and the customer life value model (CLV). The RFM model
focusses on three key metrics; how recently a customer has purchased, how often they purchase and
how much money they spend. On the other hand, the CLV model attempts to predict the amount of
money a customer will spend with the company from present day till the time the business relationship
is terminated. Gupta et al (2006) indicate that the main limitation to RFM models is that they use a
scoring system and do not provide a specific dollar value. However, there are successful cases where
an RFM model was

Sea Oak Analysis
In Sea Oak, George Saunders composes a story that examines social classes by applying satire. He
uses the narrator s Aunt Bernie to teach a valuable lesson about life. The valuable lesson is that one
should appreciate what they have in life my making the most out of it. It is essential for people to
acknowledge what they have, on the grounds that one day it might be gone. In Sea Oak, Saunders
represents two Aunt Bernie s, a before life Aunt Bernie and an after life Aunt Bernie.
With the before life Aunt Bernie, she lives with her nephew, her niece Min, her daughter Jade, and
their babies. Although she experiences poverty, mistreatment, and also lives in an unsafe
neighborhood, she appreciates what she has. She experiences poverty all of her life, and experiences
mistreatment when she takes care of the grandfather; he leaves her with nothing when he dies.
Grandpa needed her to keep the house after Grandma died. Then he died and left all his money to a
woman that none of us had ever heard of. (Saunders, 95). Aunt Bernie was mistreated because she acts
a caretaker and it backfired on her. Aunt Bernie handles the situation of the grandfather not leaving her
money by not reacting, she remained not bitter. In addition to, Aunt Bernie is appreciative of what life
hands her when Saunders describes what she had received for Christmas one year. When I say I am
tired of being broke, she says that Grandpa once gave her pencils for Christmas. She was so thrilled
[that] she sat around sketching horses all day on the back of used envelopes (Saunders, 95). As
Saunders continues to build on the story of Aunt Bernie s before life, readers want to know, can Aunt
Bernie discover a plan in time enough to remove her family from poverty and living at risk, or will it
be too late?
In Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, Alison Bechdel composes a graphic memoir to inform readers
about her journey of coming out as a lesbian to her parents. To add to this note, Bechdel also gives
details about her family and how she discovers her father s true sexuality he is attracted to males. She
builds the story around the tragic event of her father s mysterious death.
While growing up, Alison lives in Pennsylvania with her family her mother

Similarities Between Kindred And The Sun
Although Kindred and The Sun Also Rises differ in genre, and setting they are none the less similar in
how the author uses a first person chronological narrative to explore the theme of identity within a
different society. By taking the reader along as the protagonist faces difficult or challenging events.
When examining the effect of the first person narrative on the content of the novel, the reader is able
to see that it s the use of the narrative that gives the protagonist more depth, this in turn gives the
content more depth. By this we mean that because the reader is able to experience events at the same
time and the same way that the protagonist does, the reader, is given a clear picture of the protagonist
and of the opinions, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reason the first person narrative s effect on the content of the novel is important is because it
shows a broad view of how the narrative shapes the protagonist identity. The second parallel between
Kindred and The Sun Also Rises, is that the protagonist are introduced at the beginning of the novel
with of general concept of who they are. As a result of the chronological narrative the readers is taken
along through the course of the novel, therefore the reader is able to gather a clear picture of the
protagonist identity, or sense of self. For example in Kindred because of the first person narrative, the
author has given the reader an insight into Dana s thoughts, as a result the reader is able to grasp a few
of the qualities or beliefs that form Dana s sense of self. For instance in the following conversation
between Dana and Kevin the reader gets a picture of Dana s ideas about intimacy, and sexuality. ...
Come with me. I repeated softly.
Dana, you re hurt. Your back...
Hey
He stopped, pulled me closer.
Five years? I whispered.
That long. Yes.
They hurt you. I fingered the scar on his forehead.
That s nothing. It healed years ago. But you...
Please come with me.
He did. He was so careful, so fearful of hurting me. He did hurt me, of course. I had known he would,
but it didn t matter. (Butler 190)

Chronic Pain Research
Living with constant pain can be debilitating and it can be a huge detriment in one s life. Chronic pain
can impair an individual s ability to participate in almost every day life regimes. Research has shown
that chronic pain negatively impacts an individual s ability to maintain social connections (Lennon,
Link, Marbach, Dohrenwend, 1989), employment and ability to undertake activities of daily living
(Andersson, 1999). Chronic pain is significantly related to a range of mental health difficulties, as well
as reduced subjective well being. A meta analysis of chronic pain research suggests that there is an
interaction between a patient s symptoms of depression and the severity of their chronic pain (Tunks,

once said The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically.
Intelligence plus character that is the goal of true education . The key here is to educate the doctors
and get them to educate their patients about opioids and their potent side effects. The more educated
the patient is the more likely they will make a well informed decision. Therapeutic patient education is
a method that was established for the purpose of enabling health care professionals to pass on their
knowledge and expertise to patients so that patients can become partners in their own care (Vargas
Schaffer Cogan, 2014). By allowing the patient to engage in the educated decision making, it gives
them a certain level of responsibility for his or her own health. While this is the first step to diagnosis
of chronic pain, this can allow patient to explore other non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, such as
acupuncture, physiotherapy and physical exercise. This would transform what is now a solely
medically driven, pharmacologic approach to pain management into a patient centered,
multidisciplinary, complementary, and integrative medicine approach, and maintain the patient as an
active participant at the center of the pain management strategy (Vargas Schaffer Cogan, 2014). Again,
this is very important because with increased knowledge, patients modify their attitudes, improve their
skills, and raise their aspirations in order to adapt their

How Does Cartman Use Cartman
The story continues with the next episode, Go God Go XII . After freezing himself, Cartman winds up
waking up five hundred years into the future. In South Park, Cartman is frequently used as vessel for
the show s creators to make fun of and criticize. However, Go God Go and Go God Go XII use
Cartman in a different matter. All Cartman wants in these two episodes is the Nintendo Wii. His
determination and impatience can be found humorous to the audience because it has landed him in
such a silly situation. However, the show is using Cartman s quest so he can navigate through the
conflict between the three different atheists groups. These episodes actually use Mr. Garrison, Richard
Dawkins, and the three atheists groups in order to satirize ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He paces in front of the store impatiently, which is funny because it is a repetition of when Cartman
paced in front of the video game store in the previous episode. After Cartman steals the phone from a
group of boys, he uses the device to call people in the past. Cartman s interactions on the phone
involve different triangular relationships. The most humorous one is when Cartman calls his past self.
In this situation there are two separate Cartman s interacting with each other, past Cartman and future
Cartman. The triangle relationship is between past Cartman, future Cartman, and the audience.
Essentially Cartman as a whole is being made fun of, but past Cartman s behavior is the main target of
the joke. Even though future Cartman is trying to help his past self, past Cartman is too stubborn to
listen. In that particular situation, future Cartman is actually being reasonable. However, both
Cartmans are still being made fun of because the interaction between them demonstrates that Cartman
is too stubborn to even listen to his future self. The situation is funny to the audience because Cartman
is unknowingly being made fun

Biological Magnification
As seen in graph 1.1, group members observed that the number of toxins that were accumulated each
week were all in even numbers. Also, during weeks 0 4, the accumulation of toxins in each week seem
to be decreasing bit by bit, but then at week five the accumulation increased a bit (12, 10, 9, 7, 8).
Discussion
Looking back at the data and results collected, in five weeks the great blue heron will die. The group
has successfully modeled a simulation of what will happen to the great blue heron when biological
magnification occurs. Based on graph 1.1, at week five there are 46 toxins in the bird. This means that
at that time the great blue heron has accumulated more than 44 toxins, passing the lethal threshold of

The salt marsh is an ecosystem that has many different organisms and species dwelling upon the
surface. Of these organisms, they include sea lettuce, the Sheepshead Minnow, Fluke and the Great
Blue Heron. These organisms interact with each other in the ecosystem. The sea lettuce is a producer,
which gets eaten by the consumer, the minnows. Then, minnow is eaten by a secondary consumer, a
fluke. Lastly, the Great blue Heron, as a top predator and tertiary consumer, eats the fluke. Through
this process, toxins are transferred from trophic level to trophic level. An example of this is the BP oil
spill, which released a large amount of toxins to the ocean, and animals can take in the toxins, causing
large amounts of deaths. Each organism has a lethal threshold, or the amount of toxins an organism
can have before death. The Great Blue Heron in this case has a lethal threshold of 44 toxins
(EduChange, 2004). A lab has been done to model the biological magnification of toxins in an
ecosystem with the Great Blue Heron. If a Great Blue Heron eats for five weeks, then the animal will
die because the lethal threshold of 44 toxins has been passed and the toxins cannot be

  • 2. The Search for Redemption in the Kite Runner and Secret... The search for Redemption In a lifetime one will face many battles and deal with guilt as said nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man s character give him power (Abraham Lincoln). Guilt from deceiving others or other immoral acts will result in one constantly searching for redemption. Khalid Hosseni s novel Kite Runner and Shilpi Somaya Gowda s novel Secret Daughter revolve around betrayal and redemption. Firstly, the search for personal redemption will strongly influence ones character. Secondly, the bond a child forms with their parents will affect their actions. Lastly, the persistence of the past will cloud one s ability to redeem their life. Throughout the novel the authors integrated the themes of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As both characters lives are intertwined with guilt it shapes the decisions they make as Amir sets out to make things right with Hassan, to prove he is not the selfish boy he once was and Kavita need to find forgiveness within herself to be freed of her pain, just like Amir. Next, Amir and Jasu, Kavita s husband in the novel secret daughter did not just ruin their lives; they destroyed the lives of others around them. Amir making the choice to leave Hassan in the alley set the lives of both characters in the novel I could step into that alley, stand up for Hassan the way he stood up for me all those times in the past and accept whatever would happen to me or I could run. In the end, I ran (Hosseni, 84). Amir s choice to run later impacted his father s life as he lost the chance to watch his son Hassan grow up. Just as Jasu, forced Kavita to give up her 2 daughters we cannot keep her! ...she will become a burden to us, a drain on our family! (Gowda 106 107). Just like Kavita is haunted by not having her daughters with her, it is also disturbing Jasu. He knows what he did was wrong therefore he s been trying to make up for it all his life. • 3. Easter Island History Easter Island is one of the world s most famous archaeological sites. But it is least visited. It is also very isolated. It is located south of the equator and around 2200 miles off the Chile coast. The island has three extinct volcanoes. But the island itself is just a massive volcano rising from the Pacific Ocean floor. The oldest known name for Easter Island is Te Pito o Te Henua, which means the center of the world. Tahitian sailors gave the island the name Rapa Nui in the 1860 s due to the fact that it looked like another island in Polynesia called Rapa Iti. Easter Island got its name Easter Island from the Dutch sea captain, Jacob Roggeveen. Easter Island is primarily known for its huge stone statues, or Moai statues. They were in use as early as 500 AD, carved between 1000 AD and 1650, and were still standing when Captain Jacob Roggeveen visited the island in 1722. A few of the moai once had crowns or hats made of red volcano stone. The purpose of it is still unknown, but archaeologist believed that they were linked or sacred to a particular clan. The moai statues itself symbolized authority and power, both religiously and politically. But how they were moved is still a big mystery til this day. They stayed on Easter Island because there was plenty of fish, plants, forests, and many more natural resources. There was plenty for everyone of it for everyone. They developed a culture and had good lives as their population grew. But over the years, the population started to grow larger and larger, way too large for the island to support them all. • 4. Modern Day Era And Its Impact On Our Society Humans have been communicating with each other as long as the human race can remember. It has been the essences of our survival allowing us to be able to pass on our knowledge, express ideas, and covey emotions. As time passed, we have learned different methods to communicate. For example, we have learned to communicate with words and symbols which has helped us evolve and form a foundation for our society. Words and symbols have allowed to us expand our ability to communicate and the ability to express our ideas in a greater way. Typography has become one of the most influential ways that we use to communicate in this modern day era; and it plays a major role in our society. Typography essentially is found everywhere from posters to books, magazines to signs and generally anywhere where type is involved. Now the history of type itself is quite long which definitely states that type has come a long way and has a great history behind it. Two of the most well known movements in type, which introduced new principals and brought change to type, would be the Bauhaus movement and Futurist movement. These two movements have brought forth change and principals that have influenced the typography work in todays world. In this essay I will be discussing how the Bauhaus movement and the Futurist movement are different in terms of their philosophy of type, the characteristics and works of art. • 5. Essay on Child Development Observation In this assignment I am going to describe a child observation that I have done in a nursery for twenty minutes in a play setting. I will explain the strengths and weaknesses of naturalistic observation through the key developmental milestones based in Mary Sheridan (2005) check list and provide a theoretical explanation to support the naturalistic observation. First of all I would like to explain why the child observation is important for social workers. It is important because it focus on the problems that arise when a child s situation is not taken seriously and consequently have harsh consequences for both worker and child (ClimbiĂŠ Report, 2002). Observation is something that leads to formation of hypotheses and gives new insights ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At this stage, the child s thinking changes over time. The observation made me reflect and discover the child s interests, I could assess his developmental levels and I have observed what strategies were being used to attain their goals. After the observation I reflected upon it and realised that I have learned a lot about their personalities and skills that they need to practice. Secondly, it is important to consider the strengths of naturalistic observation as a method. This was identified when the child was consistently moving and doing different activities that allowed me to understand how he communicates with other children, how he behaves and what he learns from others. In the play setting the child was able to develop his thinking and according to the Framework for the Assessment of Children in Need and their Families (DOH, 2000) through social relationships, the child was encouraged to express his feelings, emotions, which was achieved by the setting creating an enjoyment environment. Cognitive developments allow the child to begin to understand and interact with the environment and see things from the carer s point of view, adjusting behaviours accordingly and understanding that the carer has goals and plans, therefore, and the relationship is seen as partnership. Cognitive skills are necessary in adapting to the environment. As Hendey and Kloep (2002) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Reflection On Thomas Fellow And Reentko Concert I saw Thomas Fellow and Reentko Dirks at Loyola Marymount University on March 25th. One thing that I learned from the concert was that guitar is really something that brings people together because there were quite a lot of people in attendance. I observed that both guitarists never really looked at their music sheets when they played. They seem to have memorized the pieces that they were playing and were playing off muscle memory, which is incredible. My impression of the concert was that it was excellent. I really enjoyed it because there were a lot of different songs that were played with different melodies. The first song that the duo played together called Prometheus was really well done and the duo displayed great chemistry together. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He played a lot of soothing music compared to Prometheus, which I really liked. I thought it was also incredible that he had another performance with the quartet right afterwards and already played another show before he played at 3pm. Both guitarists made different types of sounds with their foot and guitar such as tapping the guitar to create a non string sound. I thought that their stage presence was really good because they had me engaged the whole time and really listen to their performance. Additionally, I like how after every song the guitarists would talk a little bit about the history of the song and how it came to be. It was especially interesting to hear how certain songs were made and the inspiration behind them. Overall, I really enjoyed going to a classical guitar concert because I ve never been to one and it was definitely a different and new experience for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Purpose Of Education By Martin Luther King Jr. And... Bailey Nielsen Galloway College Composition 20 January 2015 Education in Society Within the speeches The Purpose of Education by Martin Luther King Jr. and Wiley College vs. Oklahoma City College from the movie The Great Debaters, there are many different points that can be identified as ethos, pathos, or logos. Logos In The Purpose of Education, King talks about how even though a person may be educated it doesn t necessarily mean that they are intelligent. King mentions Eugene Talmadge, whom of which King believed had a better mind than many in Georgia, yet Talmadge thought as King as an inferior being, but he was still considered educated from every logical stand point. Ethos We are prone to let our mental life become invaded by legions of half truths, prejudices, and propaganda. Many decisions within a day are controlled and guided by the things that have already been said to be good . In order to be good and accepted in society it has to come from source when is credible and reliable but for that to happen someone has to have their own opinion on a matter but with the education system the way it is education is bias knowledge. Pathos For the Wiley College vs. Oklahoma City College debate, the resolve is Negroes should be admitted to state universities. Empathy is gained from the audience as the black students make their case in support of the resolve. While the negative argued that a black student cannot possible succeed in a white college, affirmative states ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Faith And Faith In The Film The Book Of Eli In this essay, I will discuss my opinions and knowledge based on the film The Book of Eli. Discussing particularly the questions how faith plays into the ethical decisions regarding life and death. I do believe Eli was justified in defending the weak by killing the strong. Eli used his faith for protection, he fought against evil along with doing more for others than for himself. Throughout the whole film, God and faith is strongly seen. To begin, I will discuss what role faith plays in. When Eli is faced with conflict his actions may be seen unethical but I see it as protection. Since the setting is post apocalyptic America, there is only so much you can do to protect yourself. The other people in the surrounding areas, for example the lady ... • 11. The Galileo Controversy The 17th century was full of challenges to the authority of the Catholic Church. Many of these challenges were indirectly related to the Church s power, as they indicted the Church s teachings rather than its authority. Those who disagreed with the Church formulated various theories that were oppositional to those of the Church. In 1609, Galileo made a revolutionary discovery. He utilized a telescope to gaze into the night sky, and found that the sun was located at the center of the solar system. Furthermore, he found that the planets revolved around the sun. These findings were against popular belief and that of the Church. Galileo promoted his theory of heliocentrism through various writings and conversations with individuals, but in 1633, ... In fact, in a private letter to the Duchess of Tuscany in 1615, Galileo defended his beliefs, expressing that he did not believe that the same God who has given senses, reason and intellect has intended for [them] to not use them. However, upon a closer reading of this evidence, one finds that Galileo never opposed his alleged heresy in the letter. The weakness in this evidence is that it defends Galileo s beliefs, contending that they may be true, but never addresses how it interacts with the beliefs of the Church. Even if this letter were a perfect source, it would still not be able to show that Galileo was not a heretic because Galileo never rejects the fact that his belief was different from the belief of the Church. A heretic is one whose beliefs are at odds with the teachings of the Church, which means that even if Galileo was correct in saying that the sun was at the center of the universe, he was still a heretic for believing in a theory contrary to one taught by the Church. Faced with the option of whether to adopt or reject CCSS, the state of Arizona chose the former. The approved common core subjects are English and math, and place a heavy focus on the development of real world, critical thinking skills. Common Core standards were adopted by the state of Arizona because of the perceived need to enhance students abilities to transition from K 12 grade levels to college and the career world. The AZCCRS clearly dictate what Arizona children should know at each grade level (Expect More Arizona, 2014) Aside from updating everyday classroom standards, there has also been a push to replace the outdated Arizona s Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) test. While there was debate over which standardize test to administer, the state of Arizona has decided that Arizona s Measure of Educational Readiness to Inform Teaching (AZMERIT) will be the best tool to measure the success of the new educational standards. Accordingly, readers mustn t look very far before they find a plethora of rhetoric. Capote is often credited with having created the original crime novel, and he didn t get this distinction by writing like everyone else. He used his interesting writing style to make his readers feel as though they were actually in the book, but not just as an onlooker. At the end of the book it is reveled that Perry single handedly killed the entire Clutter family, which is most likely the time when Dick made the discovery that there might be something wrong with Perry. Impact Of The Nigerian Presidential Amnesty Program In this paper, I estimate the impact of the Nigerian Presidential Amnesty Program (Amnesty), a local form of Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR), on crude oil production in Nigeria. The President of Nigeria announced the program on June 25th, 2009 which aimed to put an end to the insurgency crisis experienced in the Niger Delta region, particularly between 2006 2009 which had led to an average loss of about 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day (cited in Asuni, 2009) and which had major implications for the government s revenue. Militants were given the opportunity for a state pardon by submitting their weapons in exchange for empowerment training and monthly stipends of N65,000 per month. I used a difference in difference approach and the results indicate an average increase of about 73% in crude oil production in the treated states. The production and export data for this work was retrieved from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) database, the regulating body for the Oil and Gas industry, beginning from Q1, 2005, to Q4, 2013. I also collected crude oil prices from the British Petroleum website. Although the Amnesty Program led to a significant increase in oil production, it does not necessarily suggest it is the best policy that could have been adopted due to its challenges. This system stressed the importance of morals, education and hierarchical order in the government and society (Japan Guide.com).The Shogun needed to create peace and by using segregation, there were four types of divisions during the Edo period. First at the top was the Shogun and Samurai, they created structure and peace among the domains. Second in line was the peasants because without them the most important need would not be filled which was food. Artisans were third in line being they added some value for the reason that they produced goods like swords for the Samurai, artwork, music, and painting/printing. Last on the list of importance was the merchants. Merchants made money off people and therefor held no value to the Shogun. The students will have an opportunity on the first day of class to come up with some more they think should be followed. The rules will be as follows: Number one, be on time for class. This will help them throughout life just as much as in the classroom. No matter what, in life you must be on time for certain things. In a workplace you have a schedule to follow. I believe implementing certain rules early in life gives the opportunity for success and good work ethic. Number two will be to complete all tasks in a timely manner. This sets them up for a good work ethic also. If all tasks are completed on time for the whole class, I will reward them by having a game day. Number three, no talking during tests. If students are talking during a test, then that makes it hard to see if they need a different learning method to catch on to the material. The class overall must follow all rules or there will be no reward handed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Information System Based On Data Mining Techniques Aims, objectives and possible outcomes The key aim of this project is to develop an information system based on data mining techniques to build upon existing customer relationships and increase profit. Part Parcel Computers has been at the forefront of the computer parts industry for the past fifteen years. They have developed a reputation for the cheapest computer parts by focussing on a cost leadership strategy. P P computers have a loyalty card programme that provides discounts and benefits to its customers but has not used this collected data to specifically identify and target its loyal customers. Unless P P computers build sales volume with the data, it is merely an overhead without any tangible benefit (Cox, 2012). The objective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ultimately, P P computers can gain a competitive advantage through understanding the desires and needs of their loyal customer base. Furthermore, this project will also use association rules within customer segments to predict what items are most likely to be purchased together thus informing future business decisions. Background: Loyalty programmes have rapidly proliferated in almost all consumer focussed industries. In the United States alone, explicit opt in programme memberships topped 2.6 billion in 2012 (IIDA, 2014). The vast amount of transactional and demographic data gathered from loyalty programmes has been used by many organisations to drive business decisions. The use of supervised and unsupervised learning has been used to gather different information about customer desires, trends and loyalty. There are two primary modelling approaches, they are recency, frequency and monetary (RFM) model and the customer life value model (CLV). The RFM model focusses on three key metrics; how recently a customer has purchased, how often they purchase and how much money they spend. On the other hand, the CLV model attempts to predict the amount of money a customer will spend with the company from present day till the time the business relationship is terminated. Gupta et al (2006) indicate that the main limitation to RFM models is that they use a scoring system and do not provide a specific dollar value. However, there are successful cases where an RFM model was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Sea Oak Analysis In Sea Oak, George Saunders composes a story that examines social classes by applying satire. He uses the narrator s Aunt Bernie to teach a valuable lesson about life. The valuable lesson is that one should appreciate what they have in life my making the most out of it. It is essential for people to acknowledge what they have, on the grounds that one day it might be gone. In Sea Oak, Saunders represents two Aunt Bernie s, a before life Aunt Bernie and an after life Aunt Bernie. With the before life Aunt Bernie, she lives with her nephew, her niece Min, her daughter Jade, and their babies. Although she experiences poverty, mistreatment, and also lives in an unsafe neighborhood, she appreciates what she has. She experiences poverty all of her life, and experiences mistreatment when she takes care of the grandfather; he leaves her with nothing when he dies. Grandpa needed her to keep the house after Grandma died. Then he died and left all his money to a woman that none of us had ever heard of. (Saunders, 95). Aunt Bernie was mistreated because she acts a caretaker and it backfired on her. Aunt Bernie handles the situation of the grandfather not leaving her money by not reacting, she remained not bitter. In addition to, Aunt Bernie is appreciative of what life hands her when Saunders describes what she had received for Christmas one year. When I say I am tired of being broke, she says that Grandpa once gave her pencils for Christmas. She was so thrilled [that] she sat around sketching horses all day on the back of used envelopes (Saunders, 95). As Saunders continues to build on the story of Aunt Bernie s before life, readers want to know, can Aunt Bernie discover a plan in time enough to remove her family from poverty and living at risk, or will it be too late? In Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, Alison Bechdel composes a graphic memoir to inform readers about her journey of coming out as a lesbian to her parents. To add to this note, Bechdel also gives details about her family and how she discovers her father s true sexuality he is attracted to males. She builds the story around the tragic event of her father s mysterious death. While growing up, Alison lives in Pennsylvania with her family her mother ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Similarities Between Kindred And The Sun Although Kindred and The Sun Also Rises differ in genre, and setting they are none the less similar in how the author uses a first person chronological narrative to explore the theme of identity within a different society. By taking the reader along as the protagonist faces difficult or challenging events. When examining the effect of the first person narrative on the content of the novel, the reader is able to see that it s the use of the narrative that gives the protagonist more depth, this in turn gives the content more depth. By this we mean that because the reader is able to experience events at the same time and the same way that the protagonist does, the reader, is given a clear picture of the protagonist and of the opinions, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reason the first person narrative s effect on the content of the novel is important is because it shows a broad view of how the narrative shapes the protagonist identity. The second parallel between Kindred and The Sun Also Rises, is that the protagonist are introduced at the beginning of the novel with of general concept of who they are. As a result of the chronological narrative the readers is taken along through the course of the novel, therefore the reader is able to gather a clear picture of the protagonist identity, or sense of self. For example in Kindred because of the first person narrative, the author has given the reader an insight into Dana s thoughts, as a result the reader is able to grasp a few of the qualities or beliefs that form Dana s sense of self. For instance in the following conversation between Dana and Kevin the reader gets a picture of Dana s ideas about intimacy, and sexuality. ... Come with me. I repeated softly. Dana, you re hurt. Your back... Hey He stopped, pulled me closer. Five years? I whispered. That long. Yes. They hurt you. I fingered the scar on his forehead. That s nothing. It healed years ago. But you... Please come with me. He did. He was so careful, so fearful of hurting me. He did hurt me, of course. I had known he would, but it didn t matter. • 34. Chronic Pain Research Living with constant pain can be debilitating and it can be a huge detriment in one s life. Chronic pain can impair an individual s ability to participate in almost every day life regimes. Research has shown that chronic pain negatively impacts an individual s ability to maintain social connections (Lennon, Link, Marbach, Dohrenwend, 1989), employment and ability to undertake activities of daily living (Andersson, 1999). Chronic pain is significantly related to a range of mental health difficulties, as well as reduced subjective well being. A meta analysis of chronic pain research suggests that there is an interaction between a patient s symptoms of depression and the severity of their chronic pain (Tunks, Crook, Weir, 2008), and that chronic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... once said The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character that is the goal of true education . The key here is to educate the doctors and get them to educate their patients about opioids and their potent side effects. The more educated the patient is the more likely they will make a well informed decision. Therapeutic patient education is a method that was established for the purpose of enabling health care professionals to pass on their knowledge and expertise to patients so that patients can become partners in their own care (Vargas Schaffer Cogan, 2014). By allowing the patient to engage in the educated decision making, it gives them a certain level of responsibility for his or her own health. While this is the first step to diagnosis of chronic pain, this can allow patient to explore other non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, such as acupuncture, physiotherapy and physical exercise. This would transform what is now a solely medically driven, pharmacologic approach to pain management into a patient centered, multidisciplinary, complementary, and integrative medicine approach, and maintain the patient as an active participant at the center of the pain management strategy (Vargas Schaffer Cogan, 2014). Again, this is very important because with increased knowledge, patients modify their attitudes, improve their skills, and raise their aspirations in order to adapt their ... • 35. How Does Cartman Use Cartman The story continues with the next episode, Go God Go XII . After freezing himself, Cartman winds up waking up five hundred years into the future. In South Park, Cartman is frequently used as vessel for the show s creators to make fun of and criticize. However, Go God Go and Go God Go XII use Cartman in a different matter. All Cartman wants in these two episodes is the Nintendo Wii. His determination and impatience can be found humorous to the audience because it has landed him in such a silly situation. However, the show is using Cartman s quest so he can navigate through the conflict between the three different atheists groups. These episodes actually use Mr. Garrison, Richard Dawkins, and the three atheists groups in order to satirize ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He paces in front of the store impatiently, which is funny because it is a repetition of when Cartman paced in front of the video game store in the previous episode. After Cartman steals the phone from a group of boys, he uses the device to call people in the past. Cartman s interactions on the phone involve different triangular relationships. The most humorous one is when Cartman calls his past self. In this situation there are two separate Cartman s interacting with each other, past Cartman and future Cartman. The triangle relationship is between past Cartman, future Cartman, and the audience. Essentially Cartman as a whole is being made fun of, but past Cartman s behavior is the main target of the joke. Even though future Cartman is trying to help his past self, past Cartman is too stubborn to listen. In that particular situation, future Cartman is actually being reasonable. However, both Cartmans are still being made fun of because the interaction between them demonstrates that Cartman is too stubborn to even listen to his future self. The situation is funny to the audience because Cartman is unknowingly being made fun ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Biological Magnification As seen in graph 1.1, group members observed that the number of toxins that were accumulated each week were all in even numbers. Also, during weeks 0 4, the accumulation of toxins in each week seem to be decreasing bit by bit, but then at week five the accumulation increased a bit (12, 10, 9, 7, 8). Discussion Looking back at the data and results collected, in five weeks the great blue heron will die. The group has successfully modeled a simulation of what will happen to the great blue heron when biological magnification occurs. Based on graph 1.1, at week five there are 46 toxins in the bird. This means that at that time the great blue heron has accumulated more than 44 toxins, passing the lethal threshold of the organism and therefore becoming ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The salt marsh is an ecosystem that has many different organisms and species dwelling upon the surface. Of these organisms, they include sea lettuce, the Sheepshead Minnow, Fluke and the Great Blue Heron. These organisms interact with each other in the ecosystem. The sea lettuce is a producer, which gets eaten by the consumer, the minnows. Then, minnow is eaten by a secondary consumer, a fluke. Lastly, the Great blue Heron, as a top predator and tertiary consumer, eats the fluke. Through this process, toxins are transferred from trophic level to trophic level. An example of this is the BP oil spill, which released a large amount of toxins to the ocean, and animals can take in the toxins, causing large amounts of deaths. Each organism has a lethal threshold, or the amount of toxins an organism can have before death. The Great Blue Heron in this case has a lethal threshold of 44 toxins (EduChange, 2004). A lab has been done to model the biological magnification of toxins in an ecosystem with the Great Blue Heron. If a Great Blue Heron eats for five weeks, then the animal will die because the lethal threshold of 44 toxins has been passed and the toxins cannot be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
