Plagiarism Is Ruining The Creative World
Plagiarism, piracy, and lack of proper netiquette are all scourges of the creative world. All three
concepts reduce either the value of one s created content or the ability to cooperate in a civilized
manner. Lacking respect of these concepts will cause society to miss out on the immense opportunities
for of our civilization that the interconnected world can now bring.
According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, Plagiarism comes from the Latin phrase Plagiarus
which means Thief or Kidnapper. ([Def. 2]. (n.d.). In Online Etymology Dictionary). A Harvard guide
about plagiarism states:
Plagiarus means kidnapper, in Latin, because in antiquity plagiarii were pirates who sometimes stole
children: when you plagiarize, as several commentators ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These issues are all interconnected in that by having improper netiquette, one will be prone to accept
plagiarism or piracy. Your integrity has already been compromised when you disrespect others. The
monetary, legal, and loss of reputation that result as a consequence of these issues is just and fair.
Living up to the expectations of society can be difficult at times, but can be achieved by taking proper
care of your actions. Whether it s taking credit for a text you didn t create, distributing a software
program you have no rights to, or robbing another person of their dignity; Plagiarism, piracy, and lack
of proper netiquette erode the very fabric of civilized

Tattooing is a way to design an intelligent pattern onto the body by puncturing the skin.
It was used for sprictal, labeling, medical and as a punishment. Tattooing goes back as far as 5000 BC.
Throughout the years tattooings meaning has differed and grown into new ideas and meanings. Now
people can even do temporary fum tattoos or permanent ones that are for enjoyment, labeling they are

Ashoka The Greatest Promoter Of Buddhism
Emperor Ashoka of the Mauryan Empire was not just a ruler, in fact, he was not just anything. Ashoka
Maurya was an emperor that built the largest empire in Indian history, paved the road for Buddhism s
entrance as a major world religion, and set historically high standards for what it means to be a great
leader. Many people believe that he was just a tyrannical despot that enjoyed bloodshed and war.
However, Ashoka went through a spiritual revival that lead him to become a great leader, shown
through how he became the greatest promoter of Buddhism (after Buddha himself), gave up war, and
issued multiple edicts that acted in favor of his citizens health and lifestyles, as well as neighboring
empires. Therefore, Ashoka the Great was an inspirational leader that drove the Mauryan Empire to its
ultimate zenith by using his guidance qualities, like compassion, proactivity and trustworthiness, as
well as his visionary optimism that helped put his remarkable goals into action. Ashoka s original
methods of ruling his empire followed the mannerisms that of his lineage, especially as of his
grandfather s ways: efficiently but cruelly. To expand the Mauryan Empire, Ashoka maintained a
militaristic approach, which consisted of sadistic laws against crime. He forced his people into
submission through fear, and his cruel and callous ways of ruling earned him the nicknames, Ashoka
the Terrible and Ashoka the Fierce . Both of these nicknames also correlated with Ashoka s passions

Earthquake Of The California On The San Andreas Fault Line
Living in the California on the San Andreas Fault line is the dangerous place to live. Growing up as a
child I ve always remembered preparing for earthquake drills in school because you never knew when
the big one would hit. This is something that is ingrained in me because we did it multiple times per
year. I remember being a small child and waking to a big earthquake and having to hide in the
doorway like I was taught which is very traumatizing because it s something that stays with you.
Along with the contest reminded at school. Growing up where a potential natural disaster happens can

The resulting tsunamis release enough energy that was equivalent to 1500 times of the Hiroshima

this earthquake was linked to numerous aftershocks. These aftershocks were felt in the Andaman
Islands and Nicobar Islands which was felt hours and days later. The Indian Ocean Earthquake was
linked to the Sumatra earthquake in 2005 due to the stress changes that occurred on the plates. People
who suffer from an earthquake can lose everything. Homes can be damaged and cause additional
stress on the family and the providers for the family. There have been homes that have caught on fire
because of an earthquake or even flooded because pipes bursting after an earthquake. The idea of
losing everything is downright anxiety causing let alone actual losing all of your belonging due to a
natural disaster can impact one s anxiety. According to Mental health training experiences among
Haitian healthcare workers post earthquake 2010, many people were suffering from trauma caused by
the catastrophe earthquake (Cianelli et all 2010). Trauma can impact how a person functions in their
day to day life. When trauma is placed in front of a person it can impact how they think, and feel
which can cause them to change their behaviors. These behaviors can affect their mental health state,

Genetically Engineered Children Research Paper
Genetically Engineered Children
My personal opinion on genetically engineered children is that there should be research done to aid
the development of it, but there should be a limit. The prescreening of embryos and possible changing
of genes so a child doesn t have a fatal illness is a tool that we should be able to use in the time of
need. The passing on of fatal genes could cease with technology like this, and that is where the
research should be going, not to determining specific traits of a child. The amazing part of being a
human is being complex and diverse and not knowing how your child will be compared to you. To
take away the variation is to take away the amazement of life. If you can pick how smart, tall, and
athletic your child will be there leaves no room for them to make decisions, to me ... Show more

Many believe the tampering with children in vitro is wrong entirely; saying God s work or fate is
solely in control of these thing; but that isn t valid in my opinion. When you look at the science behind
creating life there is so much left up to simply what chromosomes pair with each other that is what
makes up your child. To just discredit any type of aid that could come to a family whose bloodline
passes on fatal traits is negligence to me. On the other hand, there is a large group of people who don t
focus on the medical benefits of this type of research but simply on the aesthetics of their unborn
child, which seems miniscule and unimportant when you re dealing with life threatening diseases
being passed on, but is an over stepping of boundaries this research could lead to. There is no evident
answer to whether genetically engineered children are immoral or not, but I believe there is a line that
needs to be drawn by who is still to be determined, but the research should still be done in order to get
to a point where we can delegate

My Life Of My Sister
Obviously, I could have written this essay about any of the people in my life, but I picked the one
person I have spent my whole life with, Abi. Yes, yes, I know what a kiss up to her sister, but I want to
tell you about the wild spirited Abi, or as my mom says, The annoying one . Being her sister, she has
showed and still shows me almost everything that I shouldn t do. Some things she does can just make
you laugh so hard your stomach hurts or comfort you until you feel better. At first glance you don t see
a warm and cuddly person, you see someone with a very stern face and mean attitude, but once you
know her your view point just might change. Her personality is something that you would never think
of for her. Man is she a nice person, she even works a preschool for early education because that s
how much she loves helping tiny children. My sister has a boatload of humor, she keeps it all smiles.
A couple weekends ago when she came back to Worcester, we were sitting in the living room doing
something we probably weren t supposed to be doing. Our mom was yelling at us from the other room
and she wanted the cat s collar. So, my sister gets up and starts to put the cat collar around her neck,
like a choker and dance like she was in the music video for You Can t Touch This by McHammer,
even adding in her banana pants to go complete the look. Abi has a very wild soul, living her life

Connection Themes In Fury And The Water Diviner
Connection Essay The significant connection idea between my four texts is the theme of solders
fighting for their country. Soldiers back then were all fighting for their countries, they were all
wanting there country to win and did anything to make sure there country had the lead. The texts that
we picked was Fury directed by David Ayer, The Water Diviner directed by Russell Crowe, The
Prologue by Michel King and Hongi Hika: Badass of the week by Ben Thompson and the movie I
selected was The Dead Lands by Toa Fraser. The soldiers had to risk their lives to protect their land
and make sure that there country had the upper hand. In fury the American solders got put into tanks
and was put forward to fight the Germans. In the movie Fury directed by David Ayer. There is a long
shot of Norman when he is told to kill a German that is sitting right in front of him with no intentions
and no understanding of what is going on, of course he is very reluctant to kill him. Standing right
behind him is Wardaddy he is very angary and wants Norman to kill the German very urgently and
after a while of anger and pushing Norman, Wardaddy eventually holds the gun with Norman and
shoots the German. After Norman shot the German he was very shocked and distraught, Wardaddy

The Rising Of The Decembrist Russia
The rising of the Decembrist Russia was due to a confusion over the next succession. In 1825,
Alexander I died suddenly. Alexander s younger brother, Constantine, who was next in line, had no
desire to assume the throne of such a burdensome empire, so he gave his right of succession to his
brother Nicholas. Nicholas, however, had been left unaware of the official details of the change and on
learning of Alexander s death he proclaimed Constantine emperor at St. Petersburg, at the same time
as Constantine in Warsaw was proclaiming Nicholas. For nearly three weeks in December 1825 the
throne remained vacant. Russian officers and troops had come into contact with currents of liberal
thought, with new social conditions, and with new political institutions in western Europe during the
struggle against Napoleon. Upon their return home they saw that the idea of the rights of man was
regarded with contempt by their rulers, that their country by trodden under the heel of an autocracy
which made all progress impossible. As they had no legitimate means making their desires known,
they organised secret societies which agitated for reforms, including the establishment of a
constitution. These societies, afterwards called the Decembrists, were planning a widespread uprising
but, when Alexander suddenly died, resolved to take advantage of the uncertainty that existed
regarding the succession to attempt a coup d etat. But the plotters had no clear plan or organisation

Lucas v. South Carolina Coastal Council Essay
Lucas v. South Carolina Coastal Council
Problem: David H. Lucas purchased two beach front lots on Isle of Palms in Charleston county in
1986 for 900,000 with intent to later build one single family home on each lot. The following year
when South Carolina conducted a survey of the coast line the rustles showed that the beaches of South
Carolina were critically eroding. Due to the rustles of the survey South Carolina issued the Beachfront
Management Act (BMA). The act placed restraints on the usage of land along the coast line, and
because the building line was moved inward Lucas lots were affected with no exceptions provided.
When he bought those lots the year before that particular ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The court agreed that Lucas had suffered a total loss of the value of his property and concluded that
regulatory taking had occurred. On appeal, the South Carolina Supreme Court revised the decision, on
the grounds that the BMA had been passed to prevent serious harm to the public. Lucas petitioned the
U.S. Supreme Court to review the case and the Court sided with Lucas saying that the Beachfront
Management Act of 1988 had not been designed to benefit the state in obtaining land for public use,
but was to prevent harm to the public. The Court ruled that Lucas suffered a taking, and that his
property was rendered valueless by South Carolina statue and that he was entitled to just
compensation as stated in the fifth and fourteen adamants of our Constitution. Significance: Although
the South Carolina Supreme Court decided that state regulations were designed to prevent serious
public harm, the U.S. Supreme Court held that when a property owner suffered a taking, there were no
exceptions from common rule ( the Takings Clause and the just Compensation Clause). Furthermore,
when the state of South Carolina amended its original statute by including provisions that might
permit limited construction, the U.S. Supreme Court held that property owners must still be
compensated. Even when legislation later renders the initial act less restrictive,

Summary Of The Tale By O Connor 38
The Plot
A family that consists of a grandmother, father, mother, and three grandchildren from Atlanta plans to
go to Florida for a family vacation. The grandmother is refusing to go to Florida because she has her
connection in east Tennessee (O Connor 38). She points out from an article that the Misfit is on the
loose and is headed toward Florida and that the children had been to Florida before (O Connor 38).
Nevertheless, the grandmother gets up early than everyone else, and prepares for the trip. The next
morning She is dressed up in her Sunday best just in case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on
the highway would know at once that she was a lady (O Connor 38). The grandmother secretly brings
along her cat because she does not want the cat to accidentally asphyxiate himself (O Connor 38) if he
was to be left alone. The grandmother is too particular with the trip, that she takes the mileage before
they drive off and her son what speed limit to drive so that she does not want the patrolmen to ticket
Bailey and ruin their vacation.
During the trip, the grandmother keeps talking about how beautiful the scenery is in Georgia, but John
Wesley thinks otherwise. The grandmother tells John Wesley to respect his native state. As they pass a
large cotton field, the grandmother points out that there are graves that belonged to the plantation, but
the plantation has Gone with the Wind. Later on, the grandmother tells the children a story about Mr.

Layout Of Rev Ads
In society it seems that everywhere we look we are surrounded by advertisements whether it is
television commercials, billboards or advertisements. Obviously, the main purpose of advertisements
is to get the consumer to purchase the product. Print advertisements are an extremely effective way to
reach a mass audience because the advertisements are in print, the use of color, text and photography
are all key factors in luring the consumers in to buying their product. Advertisements cannot simply
attempt to sell the product in question; they must make it appeal to the consumer. It is important that
advertisements not only attempt to make the product they are trying to sell clear but also to actually

Although the colors really help, keywords also have a great toll in selling a product. By putting REV
UP THE VOLUME in big letter it draws your attention. It draws people in that want more volume for
their eyelashes. All caps draws your attention and makes you want to read every word on the ad. By
putting that if you use the product you will have denser more numerous lashes in 30 days it make
consumers want to buy this product and actually see if the product will work. Last but not least is the
layout of this ad. Layout really helps make an advertisement. By making the model take up most of
the page, your attention goes directly to her. Even without knowing what the ad is about; if you just
look at her you can automatically tell it is a mascara ad by her eyelashes. By putting the words around
the model you can read them and after every word you read about it helping your eye lashes you can t

see what the brush looks like and how it will form their lashes.

Of Mice And Men Rhetorical Analysis
Through everybody s eyes is their own version of the American Dream. Whether it s the stereotypical
dream with a good job, a family, and a house with a white picket fence, or it could be just getting by at
the end of the month financially. The American Dream doesn t have a specific image but rather a
particular mindset. Lots of people have a goal in their life that they have to work hard to be successful
towards that goal, but in most cases that goal may be unrealistic.
Everybody has a different mindset on how their way of life and what their goals are. In this generation
it is easy to see that people s minds will take them through a journey to achieve their best way of
living. One piece of evidence that points to this is We trample friends, relatives, and strangers who get
in out way of our achieving it; and once we get it we shower it on psychoanalysts to try to find out
why we are unhappy (Steinbeck 2). The author uses the word trample to demonstrate how we as
humans will step on each other to succeed our goals. Trample gives off a harsh connotation rather than
just saying We forget about our friends... . By saying that it seems as if what we want might not be that
important to trample our close ones and even strangers.Another great piece of evidence that helps
supports this is Americans seem to live and breathe and function by paradox, but in nothing are we so
paradoxical as in our passionate belief in our own myths. (Steinbeck 3) The author uses paradox

Nozick s Notion Of Historical Entitlement
Nozick asserts that the state should not be able to prohibit capitalist transfers between consenting
adults. In this paper I will argue that this claim is true in all circumstances regardless of the resulting
inequality. I will begin my analysis by explaining why it is that Nozick makes this claim. This
explanation will focus on articulating his detailed description of just acquisition and transfer of
holdings. I will then move on to describe how Nozick s conclusion regarding just transfers results in
him forbidding state intervention restricting capitalist acts. The focus here will be on detailing how
Nozick s notion of historical entitlement combats the competing theories of justice in holdings,
namely theories composed of end state principles and patterned principles. Finally, I will address
common concerns and anticipate rebuttals to Nozick s claim and show how they are unsuccessful in
their attempts. Nozick believes that a state should not prohibit consensual transfers between fit
individuals due in part to the sacrifice of liberty that it entails. Nozick puts forth a theory of
entitlement that does not include such a sacrifice. It consists of two main components: the principle of
justice in acquisition and the principle of justice in transfer. The two principles together bring about a
state of justice in holdings. Justice in transfer is concerned with answering the question of how a
person may rightfully transfer a holding to another individual as well as

Herta Muller Research Paper
Herta Müller
Writing is told from within ones self through expressions and thoughts. Creating stories are what
people do as they walk through life, opening and closing doors, and creating history. Becoming
banned to publish in your own country about the struggles and accomplishments throughout your
childhood you would not think would be a problem. It takes unique individuals to accomplish this.
Nobel Prize winner of Literature in 2009, Herta Muller has done this. Her intense, descriptive novels,
essays, poems, and short stories explaining her issues and strategies growing up in a country which
forced labor and banned her from publication is why she won. Herta Müller has discovered strength

Flemings And Walloons Research Paper
In the 1960s, the Flemings and Walloons gained control of their distinctive regions in the nation of

Unappropriate Tv Shows for Children
Unappropriate Television Shows Abstract Children are being influenced by television shows on a
daily basis. Some children are watching inappropriate television shows such as SpongeBob, Fish
Hooks, Family Guy, South Park, Ed, Edd, Eddy, Scooby Doo, Boondocks and etc. These shows can
affect children as they grow up in many ways such as using profanity, violent and aggressive behavior,
poor school performance and watch too much television may cause a slight obesity. There are many
educational television shows that are best for child to watch such as Barney, Blue s Clue, Dora the
Explorer and etc. Parent should also limit the amount of time children spend watching television.

How is there such a big impact on them just because of watching television? Television can affect
learning and school performance if it interferes with the time kids need for activities crucial to healthy
mental and physical development. Some shows (SpongeBob) teaches that it is fine to commit an
inappropriate action because there will not be a punishment and kids feel that if they do the same thing
as their favorite character from the program who committed the crime they will be a hero. Researchers
have identified three potential responses to media violence in children: increase fear, desensitization to
real life violence, and increase aggressive behavior. It may desensitve kids so much they think it is
okay and no big deal for somebody to be hit or to hit someone in the head with a hammer. Kids who
view violent acts are more likely to show aggressive behavior, but also fear that the world is scary and
that everyday something bad will happen. Scary looking things like grotesque monsters especially
frighten children aged two to seven. Telling them that the images aren t real does not help because
kids under age eight can t always tell the difference between fantasy and reality (Television and

According to Emmigration.info, The history of English Immigration to America began in the 1600 s
when England established colonies on the east coast of North America (English Immigration para. 1).
This tells us that the official start of immigration began in the 1600s when the English came to
America to establish colonies and begin some world changing events. The reason this would be world
changing exactly, would be because before this, during the Spanish colonization of South America, the
eastern hemisphere essentially thought there was nothing more to the world. They thought that their
land was all there was and nothing was beyond their coasts. In addition, the English Immigration to
America was at first based on obtaining profit from the new lands but quickly changed as people
decided to move from England to escape religious and political prosecution (English Immigration
para. 4). This would explain that the English mainly sought to receive some money from either their
country or from the resources that were available in the land. The government in England actually
offered its people money if they had made the dangerous voyage to northern America and in addition
to that money, whatever they produced in the colonies would make them profit as the English

Usefulness In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men
Often times, many literary devices show or display hidden meanings or foreshadow many, things that
will either affect the main character negatively or positively. These meanings can often make the
reader understand hidden secrets and shows them that they can never know or have learned before.
The author is able to show or interweave his or her ideals. People like John Steinbeck in his Mice and
Men are able to slowly weave a secret message into a story. Sometimes through the death of a
character and the feelings of a character, one is able to understand how in this story, mercy versus
usefulness come to a conflict over the death of a character, specifically Lennie Small. The impact of
mercy on a story often shows how one is able to forgive anyone who has given them so much pain and
hurt. John Steinbeck shows how that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Victimization of Minor Characters in Laura Esquivel s...
In a novel, minor characters are never the focus of the plot. Minor characters are present in a novel to
affect the major characters and help the character development of the major characters. Minor
characters influence the major characters in many ways. One of these ways of supporting the major

that impact the major characters of the novels due to the minor characters being victimized is Nacha in

Monica offered Father Rodrigues a cucumber, showing her respect for him by giving him what little
food she had to offer. From this small yet generous offer made by Monica, Father Rodrigues reflected
on his mission to Japan.
Since coming to this country, he reflected, he had caused nothing but hardship to these poor
Christians, and he nibbled at the cucumber with his front teeth. He had received from them the little
hut in which he had dwelt, they had given him the clothing he now wore, he had eaten their food. Now
it was his turn to give them something. But what could he give? The only thing he had to offer was his
life and his death (Endo 81).
Monica was already malnourished, yet she selflessly offered her only food to Father Rodrigues, a man
she had never encountered before. This was huge to Father Rodrigues and it made him question what
he can do to help her in return. Monica?s impact and the victimization made Father Rodrigues
question whether or not his coming to Japan really worth it or not. He realized that he had only created
more hardships for the Christian peasants that he had encountered throughout Japan. However, at the
same time, Father Rodrigues also realized that many of the Christians looked up to him and were
thankful that Father Rodrigues would try to come and help them. Monica, through her being
victimized, helped Father Rodrigues decide his fate in the end, dying as a martyr, or living and trying

Each of the stimuli I selected was due to something in the image or video that drew my attention. The
first image referenced as Sunset attracted my focus due to the color and the dark contrast of the boy

because of the complexity of the picture. There are so many components to the picture interacting with
each other. The bodies and the actual text overlap constantly causing me to attend to it longer. Unlike
Sunset the color in Human is very subdued, but the orientation of the different bodies makes it
interesting. The Mountain Dew commercial aired during the Super Bowl this year, and its very weird.

For a computer, the lack of distinct borders would also make it hard to distinguish one structure or

This picture is actually a great example of multiple Gestalt principles. The cars moving from right to

road. Even thought the actual road isn t completely visible from this angle, due to the cars obvious
movement it is easy for the observer s brain to assume a road is there.
Proximity is also used to process what is going on in this picture. The sign at the forefront of this
picture reading EPCC can be understood using proximity. The letters are all very close together and
are placed in front of a solid green background. This suggests that those letters all actually belong to
one sign and one word.
The lines of cars that are occasionally obstructed from the observer s view by other objects are

She is introduced to us in part one of the novel as a girl who is raised by Miss Havisham and is a part

house she uses the term common laboring boy (65) to insult him based on the level of class he was

society being the daughter of the convict, Magwitch. From this we as the readers feel sympathy

Dopamine Hypothesis
The Dopamine Hypothesis of Schizophrenia Schizophrenia is a chronic, psychotic disorder in which
the affected individual feels a disconnection from reality, chaotic thought patterns, delusions,
hallucinations and various disturbances in behavioural, emotional and intellectual perception.
Schizophrenia is often linked to an irregular balance of dopamine in the brain and defects of the
frontal lobe (The American Heritage medical dictionary, 2007). The symptoms of schizophrenia can
be broken down into two categories: negative symptoms and positive symptoms. The negative
symptoms include an absence of normal function, including: alogia, anhedonia, depressed appearance

To treat these psychoses, anti psychotic medication is prescribed. Anti psychotic medication works by
binding to a specific receptor in the brain, known as dopamine receptor D2 (Kapur, 2000). By
blocking this receptor, symptoms of psychosis are controlled. As symptoms of stimulant psychosis are
very similar to the positive symptoms of schizophrenia, anti psychotic medication is the preferred
medication to treat affected individuals. Two types of anti psychotic medications have been developed,
typical and atypical. Typical anti psychotics have a high potency and high affinity to D2 receptors,
however this can cause extrapyramidal effects and Parkinsonism (Golan Tashjian, 2012). Atypical anti
psychotics have a lower potency and low affinity to D2 receptors and less side effects. Therefore, anti
psychotic medication must block an appropriate amount of D2 receptors as a deficiency of dopamine
can cause extrapyramidal effects and even worsen the negative symptoms whereas an excess results in
psychosis. A cross sectional neuroimaging study reveals that the link between D2 receptors and
extrapyramidal side effects occurs only after 78% of D2 receptor occupancy (Kapur,

Movies Being A Dream In Richard Linklater s The Waking Life
The idea of movies or parts of movies being a dream is not new. A lot of the time, directors and writers
use this in order to explain surreal fantasies or irrational ideas and thoughts. Hence, audiences have
asserted this as taboo; a cop out to make excitement or abstract within a film that is less so. The eye
roll and shake of the head of the audience as a character waking up to the realization of hypnogogic
events is all too familiar. Using it as a resolution is even worse as the audience is invested in the
storyline, only to find out it was all a sham from the start and none of it was actual reality.
Richard Linklater s, The Waking Life takes a different route, however. The audience throughout the
film spends time questioning whether the protagonist, who is not named, is dreaming. Our hero spends
a large amount of the movie continually waking from these dreams. It can be argued the whole movie
is a dream. Honestly, that s the hope, because it s actually more fitting that way.
Waking life is appears that way too; a dream sequence. The fragmented structure of Linklater s movie
is a novel take on animation it appears tempermental and almost wavy as objects appear to float
without a sense of gravitational restraint. This embedds further the idea of a dream to the audience. Art
director Sabiston and Linklater film live action sequences with real, living actors. They are filmed and
edited conventionally then animated in new tech for the time: hi tech rotoscoping. Images

God Was Wrong, Support Mountaintop Removal
God Was Wrong, Support Mountaintop Removal
Coal in the United States has long been the #1 producer of energy. Massive seams of coal are found in
the Appalachian Mountains, and our reliance on this fossil fuel has meant devastation for many
mountain residents and over 500 mountains. As our society advances, the need for more energy
advances. What were once beautiful rolling hills are now flattened plateaus reminiscent of a landscape
you would see in the desert. We as a nation have only short term interest in our environment, and
choose to ignore the many warning signs this planet continues to offer us. Left in our path of
destruction are the many residents of Appalachia and a landscape that begs us for forgiveness.
Mountaintop removal is process where the tops of mountains are removed with explosives in order to
extract coal from inside the mountain. The debris created by the explosions is discarded in a valley,
which is then called fill material. A loophole in the Clean Water Act reclassified the waste created by
mountaintop removal waste as valley fill, which in turn greatly increased extraction of coal from
mountains (225). These valleys usually contain streams which become buried underneath fill, causing
much of the natural habitat to vanish and poisoning what streams are left. The older and more
traditional method was to dig inside the mountain through a tunnel network which was more time
consuming and required much more personnel. Of course, when companies

The Constitution of Ideas
An optimist is someone thinks on planet number five ... mankind will be less bloody. A pessimist is

The concept of eternal return is first introduced through warfare analogies, where a war between two
African kingdoms in the fourteenth century happened only once and that it will [turn] into mere
words, theories, lighter than feather (3, 4), whereas if the [war] were to recur eternally , it will be
considered eternal return and it would become a solid mass, permanently protuberant (4, 4).
Something that happened only once will be lost in its inanity to history, but something that reoccurs
gains weight and becomes permanent. Thus, something could only be classified as eternal return if it
occurs endlessly and adds weight in history. Kundera reiterates by saying that a Robespierre who
occurs only once is history and a Robespierre who eternally returns, chopping off French heads (4)
have infinite differences. Using Robespierre and his shocking guillotine in a humorous context of
eternal return, Kundera manages to express his idea of weight in eternal return as well as mock history
of its foolishness. Throughout the book, however, the idea of eternal return comes as the motif of birds
of fortuity, as Tereza felt The birds of fortuity had alighted once more , and that she was impelled by
the birds of fortuity fluttering down on her shoulder (75, 52). The symbol of a bird to embody

Who Is The Moral Hypocrisy In Maggie The Girl Of The Streets
Maggie, the girl of the streets written by Stephen Crane is a novella that shows the underlying truth on
how the common people of the gilded age lived. Maggie our tragic hero who blossomed in a mud

common in this setting is moral hypocrisies, this is when people often flip on their moral beliefs when
it benefits them. Jimmie, Maggie s older brother is a hot headed truck driver. He s selfish and often
seduces women then abandons them when commitment is involved. Crane uses Jimmie to show
hypocrisy in this novella.
Morals are the foundation of human behavior and actions. Jimmie is a moral hypocrite because he

Levels of Literacy in African American Literature Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Song

Through literacy will come emancipation. So runs a theme throughout the various selections we have
read thus far. But emancipation comes in many forms, as does literacy. The various aspects of
academic literacy are rather obvious in relation to emancipation, especially when one is confronted
with exclusion from membership in the dominant culture. In the various slave narratives we have
examined, all but one writer, Mary Prince, managed to achieve academic literacy to varying degrees
(although, Mary Prince was in the process of learning to read and write). And even though she was not

Auld s reasoning is that being able to read would [...] forever unfit him [Douglass] to be a slave. He
would at once become unmanageable, and of no value to his master (274). From Auld s admonitions,
Douglass determines that his road to freedom is paved with words: From that moment, I understood
the pathway from slavery to freedom. [...] The very decided manner with which he spoke [...] served
to convince me that he was deeply sensible of the truths he was uttering (275). Douglass understands
that he has everything to gain from literacy, especially the freedom that he desires above all else. His
path will be difficult, though, since he will have to find ways to teach himself to read, but it becomes a
quest for him.
Does Frederick Douglass have to pay a price to become literate? He states that he [...] was compelled
to resort to various stratagems [...] to become literate and would [...] [make] friends of all the little
white boys whom I met in the street (276). He would ply them with scraps of bread in his efforts to
gain knowledge and would read while he was running errands for his master. Later, he forges
protections (307) so he and others can attempt to escape to Maryland. Ethically or morally, does he
feel even the slightest regret that he resorts to subterfuge and bribery to meet his goals? His text is not

Why The 1981 Failed At Reforming Social Security Under The...
The reasons why the 1981 attempt at reforming Social Security under the Reagan administration
failed, as detailed in Chapter 8 of Martha Derthick and Steven M Teles The Reagan Presidency:
Pragmatic Conservatism and its Legacies, boils down to the following factors: it did not have a clear
goal in mind about Social Security reform (Derthick, Teles 187), it had a poor working relationship
with Congress on the issue (Derthick, Teles 185), and leadership, on part of the president, was lacking
(Derthick, Teles 192). In contrast, the attempt at reforming welfare in the 90s, as chronicled in Chapter

Those who have paid into the system expect to get their money back when they retire, which makes
cutting benefits politically hazardous and explains, in part, why the Reagan Administration s attempt
at reforming Social Security failed. Social Security was facing insolvency if steps were not taken to
resolve the gap between benefits going out and tax receipts being collected (Derthick, Teles 183). This
prompted many actors in the political sphere to take part in the reform effort. The most influential
actors in this process were Office of Management and Budget director David Stockman, Speaker of
the House Tip O Neill, President Reagan, Congress, and the Department of Health and Human
Services. As a political actor, David Stockman was not too interested in the possible political
repercussions of Social Security reform. Instead, he was mainly focused on the budget cutting aspect
of reform, irrespective of Congress reaction. Stockman was the main proponent of the administration s
Social Security reform proposal sent to Congress that had deep and immediate cuts in benefits for
early retirees (Derthick, Teles, 184). When Congress saw this proposal, they quickly disowned it
(Derthick, Teles, 184). Speaker of the House Tip O Neill used this reform proposal and its ensuing
rebuff from Congress to his political advantage; as a result, Democrats would forever portray

Schizophrenics
Introduction Schizophrenia in the media is often portrayed as violent, dangerous, and often homicidal
(Owen, 2012). Individuals in movies such as Take Shelter, Shutter Island, and Mr. Brooks show an
individual with schizophrenia as causing harm to themselves and others or engaging in paranormal
activity, while mostly presenting positive symptoms. However, this representation is misleading and
supporting stereotypes about schizophrenics. Persons with schizophrenia only make up one to two
percent of the total people in the United States. Schizophrenia has been recognized since the 1800s,
first labeled as dementia praecox by Emil Kraepelin; Kraepelin used the label because he believed the

The positive symptoms, symptoms that manifest, are the hallucinations, delusions, or disorganized
speech. Two or more of the positive symptoms must be present for a diagnosis. Hallucinations, in the
context of schizophrenia, are recurring auditory or visual experiences that are a creation of the mind. A
person may see their dead relative or hear voices that are not part of reality. Delusions, on the other
hand, are thoughts or beliefs that are irrational and often impossible, but the individual believes the
thoughts or beliefs without question. The usual negative symptoms, symptoms that show a loss in a
quality, are lack of emotion expression and lack of motivation or drive for everyday activities. An
individual with negative symptoms may lay around the house all day, unmotivated to go to school or
work. The individual may also have trouble expressing emotion or difficulty maintaining eye contact
(Nolen Hoeksema). The listed symptoms all fall on the schizophrenia spectrum, and manifest in each
individual differently. Some individuals fit the criteria, while others fall along the spectrum.
Schizophrenia symptoms can often be mistaken for certain personality disorders, such as schizotypal
personality disorder, and vice versa. Nicole Diver, a main character in Tender is the Night by F. Scott
Fitzgerald, is a prime example of a misdiagnosis between schizophrenia and schizotypal personality

Interviews are a very common documentary direct address technique as it allows people to speak
directly about events while being subtly lead by questions from the filmmaker. Only a short amount of
footage is shown from the interview, taken from hours of shooting to give the documentary a sense of
realism. In the garden scene we can see the use of jump cuts and the cutting room floor. Many other
techniques were used to back up the realism of the interview such as the natural lighting while he was

The Pacific Theater Of World War II
The Pacific Theater of World War II saw some of the most destructive and deadly battles in the history
of the United States. Many of these battles played out over the course of several days and involved
countless casualties from both American and Japanese forces. The Battle of the Philippine Sea is one
such battle that marks a major win for the United States in the Pacific. The battle, which took place
during June of 1944, took out most of the enemy s carrier based planes, along with their pilots, leading

Spruance tasked Admiral Mitscher and his Task Force 58 with control of the impending attack. TF
58−composed of 15 carriers, cruisers, destroyers, and hundreds of planes−was supplemented by
several hunter killer groups that preceded the ships arrival in the Marinas. On June 19, 1944, as TF 58
got closer, the Japanese, whose aircraft had longer ranges, launched the first wave of aircraft.
However, the incoming planes were quickly spotted, which gave Admiral Mitscher enough time to
ensure a large number of his planes were in the air before the enemy got too close to Saipan, which
Spruance was intent on protecting. Consequently, Ozawa s aircraft were intercepted and many were
shot down. Around this time, torpedoes from US submarines struck and sank 2 Japanese carriers.
Many more enemy aircraft waves were launched to attack TF 58; however, a very small number
actually reached US ships. Japanese forces only landed one hit on a US ship throughout the entire
battle. The Japanese suffered over 300 planes lost in air combat while the US only lost 30. Mitscher
was not satisfied, however, and took off in pursuit of the enemy, knowing his aircraft would not be in
range until late the next afternoon. Despite being at the very edge of their attacking range, the US
aircraft shot down even more enemy planes and also sank another carrier, ending one of the greatest

  • 6. Genetically Engineered Children Research Paper Genetically Engineered Children My personal opinion on genetically engineered children is that there should be research done to aid the development of it, but there should be a limit. The prescreening of embryos and possible changing of genes so a child doesn t have a fatal illness is a tool that we should be able to use in the time of need. The passing on of fatal genes could cease with technology like this, and that is where the research should be going, not to determining specific traits of a child. The amazing part of being a human is being complex and diverse and not knowing how your child will be compared to you. To take away the variation is to take away the amazement of life. If you can pick how smart, tall, and athletic your child will be there leaves no room for them to make decisions, to me ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many believe the tampering with children in vitro is wrong entirely; saying God s work or fate is solely in control of these thing; but that isn t valid in my opinion. When you look at the science behind creating life there is so much left up to simply what chromosomes pair with each other that is what makes up your child. To just discredit any type of aid that could come to a family whose bloodline passes on fatal traits is negligence to me. On the other hand, there is a large group of people who don t focus on the medical benefits of this type of research but simply on the aesthetics of their unborn child, which seems miniscule and unimportant when you re dealing with life threatening diseases being passed on, but is an over stepping of boundaries this research could lead to. There is no evident answer to whether genetically engineered children are immoral or not, but I believe there is a line that needs to be drawn by who is still to be determined, but the research should still be done in order to get to a point where we can delegate ... Being her sister, she has showed and still shows me almost everything that I shouldn t do. Some things she does can just make you laugh so hard your stomach hurts or comfort you until you feel better. At first glance you don t see a warm and cuddly person, you see someone with a very stern face and mean attitude, but once you know her your view point just might change. Her personality is something that you would never think of for her. Man is she a nice person, she even works a preschool for early education because that s how much she loves helping tiny children. • 11. The Rising Of The Decembrist Russia The rising of the Decembrist Russia was due to a confusion over the next succession. In 1825, Alexander I died suddenly. Alexander s younger brother, Constantine, who was next in line, had no desire to assume the throne of such a burdensome empire, so he gave his right of succession to his brother Nicholas. Nicholas, however, had been left unaware of the official details of the change and on learning of Alexander s death he proclaimed Constantine emperor at St. Petersburg, at the same time as Constantine in Warsaw was proclaiming Nicholas. For nearly three weeks in December 1825 the throne remained vacant. Russian officers and troops had come into contact with currents of liberal thought, with new social conditions, and with new political institutions in western Europe during the struggle against Napoleon. Upon their return home they saw that the idea of the rights of man was regarded with contempt by their rulers, that their country by trodden under the heel of an autocracy which made all progress impossible. As they had no legitimate means making their desires known, they organised secret societies which agitated for reforms, including the establishment of a constitution. These societies, afterwards called the Decembrists, were planning a widespread uprising but, when Alexander suddenly died, resolved to take advantage of the uncertainty that existed regarding the succession to attempt a coup d etat. The following year when South Carolina conducted a survey of the coast line the rustles showed that the beaches of South Carolina were critically eroding. Due to the rustles of the survey South Carolina issued the Beachfront Management Act (BMA). Lucas petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to review the case and the Court sided with Lucas saying that the Beachfront Management Act of 1988 had not been designed to benefit the state in obtaining land for public use, but was to prevent harm to the public. The Court ruled that Lucas suffered a taking, and that his property was rendered valueless by South Carolina statue and that he was entitled to just compensation as stated in the fifth and fourteen adamants of our Constitution. Significance: Although the South Carolina Supreme Court decided that state regulations were designed to prevent serious public harm, the U.S. Supreme Court held that when a property owner suffered a taking, there were no exceptions from common rule ( the Takings Clause and the just Compensation Clause). The American Dream doesn t have a specific image but rather a particular mindset. Lots of people have a goal in their life that they have to work hard to be successful towards that goal, but in most cases that goal may be unrealistic. Everybody has a different mindset on how their way of life and what their goals are. In this generation it is easy to see that people s minds will take them through a journey to achieve their best way of living. One piece of evidence that points to this is We trample friends, relatives, and strangers who get in out way of our achieving it; and once we get it we shower it on psychoanalysts to try to find out why we are unhappy (Steinbeck 2). The author uses the word trample to demonstrate how we as humans will step on each other to succeed our goals. • 16. Nozick s Notion Of Historical Entitlement Nozick asserts that the state should not be able to prohibit capitalist transfers between consenting adults. In this paper I will argue that this claim is true in all circumstances regardless of the resulting inequality. I will begin my analysis by explaining why it is that Nozick makes this claim. This explanation will focus on articulating his detailed description of just acquisition and transfer of holdings. I will then move on to describe how Nozick s conclusion regarding just transfers results in him forbidding state intervention restricting capitalist acts. The focus here will be on detailing how Nozick s notion of historical entitlement combats the competing theories of justice in holdings, namely theories composed of end state principles and patterned principles. Finally, I will address common concerns and anticipate rebuttals to Nozick s claim and show how they are unsuccessful in their attempts. Nozick believes that a state should not prohibit consensual transfers between fit individuals due in part to the sacrifice of liberty that it entails. Nozick puts forth a theory of entitlement that does not include such a sacrifice. It consists of two main components: the principle of justice in acquisition and the principle of justice in transfer. This tells us that the official start of immigration began in the 1600s when the English came to America to establish colonies and begin some world changing events. The reason this would be world changing exactly, would be because before this, during the Spanish colonization of South America, the eastern hemisphere essentially thought there was nothing more to the world. They thought that their land was all there was and nothing was beyond their coasts. In addition, the English Immigration to America was at first based on obtaining profit from the new lands but quickly changed as people decided to move from England to escape religious and political prosecution (English Immigration para. 4). This would explain that the English mainly sought to receive some money from either their country or from the resources that were available in the land. • 32. Dopamine Hypothesis The Dopamine Hypothesis of Schizophrenia Schizophrenia is a chronic, psychotic disorder in which the affected individual feels a disconnection from reality, chaotic thought patterns, delusions, hallucinations and various disturbances in behavioural, emotional and intellectual perception. Schizophrenia is often linked to an irregular balance of dopamine in the brain and defects of the frontal lobe (The American Heritage medical dictionary, 2007). The symptoms of schizophrenia can be broken down into two categories: negative symptoms and positive symptoms. The negative symptoms include an absence of normal function, including: alogia, anhedonia, depressed appearance and apathy (Ayd, 1995), however this essay will focus primarily on the positive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To treat these psychoses, anti psychotic medication is prescribed. Anti psychotic medication works by binding to a specific receptor in the brain, known as dopamine receptor D2 (Kapur, 2000). By blocking this receptor, symptoms of psychosis are controlled. As symptoms of stimulant psychosis are very similar to the positive symptoms of schizophrenia, anti psychotic medication is the preferred medication to treat affected individuals. Two types of anti psychotic medications have been developed, typical and atypical. Typical anti psychotics have a high potency and high affinity to D2 receptors, however this can cause extrapyramidal effects and Parkinsonism (Golan Tashjian, 2012). Atypical anti psychotics have a lower potency and low affinity to D2 receptors and less side effects. Therefore, anti psychotic medication must block an appropriate amount of D2 receptors as a deficiency of dopamine can cause extrapyramidal effects and even worsen the negative symptoms whereas an excess results in psychosis. A cross sectional neuroimaging study reveals that the link between D2 receptors and extrapyramidal side effects occurs only after 78% of D2 receptor occupancy (Kapur, ... • 34. Movies Being A Dream In Richard Linklater s The Waking Life The idea of movies or parts of movies being a dream is not new. A lot of the time, directors and writers use this in order to explain surreal fantasies or irrational ideas and thoughts. Hence, audiences have asserted this as taboo; a cop out to make excitement or abstract within a film that is less so. The eye roll and shake of the head of the audience as a character waking up to the realization of hypnogogic events is all too familiar. Using it as a resolution is even worse as the audience is invested in the storyline, only to find out it was all a sham from the start and none of it was actual reality. Richard Linklater s, The Waking Life takes a different route, however. The audience throughout the film spends time questioning whether the protagonist, who is not named, is dreaming. Our hero spends a large amount of the movie continually waking from these dreams. It can be argued the whole movie is a dream. Honestly, that s the hope, because it s actually more fitting that way. Waking life is appears that way too; a dream sequence. The fragmented structure of Linklater s movie is a novel take on animation it appears tempermental and almost wavy as objects appear to float without a sense of gravitational restraint. Massive seams of coal are found in the Appalachian Mountains, and our reliance on this fossil fuel has meant devastation for many mountain residents and over 500 mountains. As our society advances, the need for more energy advances. What were once beautiful rolling hills are now flattened plateaus reminiscent of a landscape you would see in the desert. We as a nation have only short term interest in our environment, and choose to ignore the many warning signs this planet continues to offer us. Left in our path of destruction are the many residents of Appalachia and a landscape that begs us for forgiveness. Mountaintop removal is process where the tops of mountains are removed with explosives in order to extract coal from inside the mountain. The debris created by the explosions is discarded in a valley, which is then called fill material. A loophole in the Clean Water Act reclassified the waste created by mountaintop removal waste as valley fill, which in turn greatly increased extraction of coal from mountains (225). These valleys usually contain streams which become buried underneath fill, causing much of the natural habitat to vanish and poisoning what streams are left. Something that happened only once will be lost in its inanity to history, but something that reoccurs gains weight and becomes permanent. Thus, something could only be classified as eternal return if it occurs endlessly and adds weight in history. Kundera reiterates by saying that a Robespierre who occurs only once is history and a Robespierre who eternally returns, chopping off French heads (4) have infinite differences. Using Robespierre and his shocking guillotine in a humorous context of eternal return, Kundera manages to express his idea of weight in eternal return as well as mock history of its foolishness. Throughout the book, however, the idea of eternal return comes as the motif of birds of fortuity, as Tereza felt The birds of fortuity had alighted once more , and that she was impelled by the birds of fortuity fluttering down on her shoulder (75, 52). Those who have paid into the system expect to get their money back when they retire, which makes cutting benefits politically hazardous and explains, in part, why the Reagan Administration s attempt at reforming Social Security failed. Social Security was facing insolvency if steps were not taken to resolve the gap between benefits going out and tax receipts being collected (Derthick, Teles 183). This prompted many actors in the political sphere to take part in the reform effort. The most influential actors in this process were Office of Management and Budget director David Stockman, Speaker of the House Tip O Neill, President Reagan, Congress, and the Department of Health and Human Services. As a political actor, David Stockman was not too interested in the possible political repercussions of Social Security reform. Instead, he was mainly focused on the budget cutting aspect of reform, irrespective of Congress reaction.
