2. The Theme Of Citizen Kane
Identity is an essential part of all our lives. Our actions determine our identity, and in turn, our identity
structures our actions. One s desire to seek a self identity is an essential for the alignment of his or her
pursuit of happiness. However, when such desire to fulfill one s standards grows too strong, one might
neglect other parts of his or her life. This neglect could lead to graver consequences, such as one s
sensations of failure and even his own downfall. In movie Citizen Kane, the director Orson Welles
presents a complex and pessimistic theme of a spiritually failed man, Charles Foster Kane, through
discovering his life story from several perspective by different characters, to tell a tragic epic story of
a rags to riches child ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For citizen Kane, the most important assets of his life are not the political ambitions, successful
newspaper business, nor his relationships with the significant others. Judging by his last word,
Rosebud, the most important piece of his life is memory from his childhood. Although his life is
changed for what appears to be better, from a materialistic viewpoint, it actually leaves him vulnerable
and alone. Kane s life is ultimately destructed by his lust to fulfill the American dream of fame, power
and wealth. The inevitable struggle of Kane is reflective of the struggle of many must confront in this
materialistic world, as one on his or her quest to find the true meaning of

3. Theme Of Narration In Sons And Lovers
Narration and point of view play a large role in the acceptance of a story. When the author writes the
novel in first person, it gives the reader an immediate connection to the protagonist. A third person
narration is more believable. The reader is being told a story without any personal bias from the
characters. With first person narration, the character breaks down the scenes and the reader gets a
direct sense of the events. Third person narration allows the reader to get to know multiple characters.
Point of view when used with third person narration has a powerful effect. It helps to reader to
understand background on different characters and to have knowledge of events that may not be the
main focus of the story.

It bounces most between Mrs. Morel and her son Paul. The narration was third person because there
was death amongst the characters. If it was first person we would lose some aspects of the story as
well as only have access to one characters opinion. Sons and Lovers was set in Noddingham, England
during the late 1800s.
The events of this story lead to the demise of its characters. Mr. Morel s alcoholism gets between him
and his wife early on in their relationship. Walter Morel cannot stand his wife accusing him of being a
drunk. One night he felt that she has crossed the line. They were arguing until he physically threw her
out of the house. Gertrude is pregnant but this does not faze Walter. His children do not matter to him
and neither does his wife.
As the story progresses, Gertrude hates Walter more and more. She turns away from her husband and
infatuates herself with her children. She once admired her husband but this admiration turns to
loathing and disgust. A little while down the line, Walter comes home drunk again. Gertrude had given
birth to the baby at this point. He drops a kitchen drawer against his shin. In a drunken rage, he throws
the drawer across the kitchen where it hits Gertrude in the head. She starts bleeding and this sobers
Walter up a little. She refuses his help and tells him to get away from her. She bandages her head and
tries to forget about the pain by holding her

6. Social recommendation has begun to play a significant role in driving traffic to traditional news
content. Most organisations are devoting significant resources to exploit social networks to drive

of these developments to the changing shape of mainstream media organisations, to levels of civic

2. A faceoff starts each period of the game, and takes place after every goal. Depending on if you are
male or female, the faceoff is different.
a. A faceoff, or draw, is when two players come to exact middle of the field, which is marked by a
small circle. The rest of the team surrounds them, standing on the edges of the circle.
b. For males, the faceoff takes place on the ground. Both players in the faceoff try to push the ball to
their teammates on the outside of the circle, so they can start with possession of the ball.
c. For females, the draw takes place with both players standing up, and the ball balanced between the
two sticks, at anywhere from waist to shoulder height. Pressure is applied from both players, so when
the referee blows his whistle, the player with stronger force pushes the ball towards their teammates
and gains possession.
3. The referees make lots of calls during the game, because there are many little rules that the players
have to be aware of. Some of the most popular rules for refs to call are shooting space , crease
violations, and dangerous checking.

8. Comparing My Last Duchess, La Belle Dame Sans Merci and A...
Differing Views of Male female Relationships in Three Poems
In the three poems we experience three different views of how male female relationships should take
place. In My Last Duchess we experience the view that the male should have the main role in
relationships, in La Belle Dame Sans Merci we hear of a relationship where the woman is in total
control of the man and has all the power.
Finally in A Woman to Her Lover we read that both men and women should have an equal amount of
power and no one should be dominant. In My Last Duchess the thoughts of a very possessive and
arrogant
Duke of Ferrara are shared. He expected his wife to behave in a very conservative manner and wanted
her to treat others as inferior. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition to this, we can see that he is holding this piece of artwork with the same value as the
picture of his wife which shows that the Duke believes that he is superior to everyone else.
The strong feminist views in A Woman to Her Lover however, are in total contrast to the well known
ideas in My Last Duchess . Although at first A Woman to Her Lover appears to only show the feminist
views of relationships, it is in fact in search of equality between the males and females in
relationships. My Last Duchess gives the sense that a man has the leading role, and all of the power in
any relationship whereas in A Woman to Her Lover , the ideas that both men and women should be
equal in relationships are uttered.
In the first stanza of the poem, we can see that the woman examines how women are typically
expected to be by men (as a housewife) the
servant and to bear you children . The very fact that she is expressing these phrases in a critical and
negative manner implies that she has a resents this idea towards this stereotypical view of women. At
the ending of this first stanza, she states; If that be what you ask, O lover I refuse you! The use of the
refrain here, not only points out her hostility, but also shows that she

Junk food has been getting a bad rap recently in society. It is believed that junk food is a leading factor
in childhood obesity and should not be allowed in public schools. Due to this many school systems
have enacted bans, or strict regulations that limit or completely exclude junk food in schools. Junk
food should not be banned in schools because schools profit and are able to fund education and
extracurricular activities through selling it, junk food isn t as harmful as one would think, and even if
schools ban junk food students can still be at risk of obesity through the use of outside sources.
Schools make huge profit through the use of vending machines and selling junk food that help fund
after school activities and education. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many studies that show junk food isn t as harmful as many would imagine. According to
Radford, A study followed nearly 20,000 students from kindergarten through the eighth grade in 1,000
public and private schools. The researchers examined the children s weight and found that in the
eighth grade, 35.5 percent of kids in schools with junk food were overweight while 34.8 percent of
those in schools without it were overweight (1). These researchers came to the conclusion through this
experiment that junk food in school wasn t as serious in issue as one would think. Junk food isn t
exactly available twenty four seven while students are in school. As stated by Rosenthal There really
isn t a lot of opportunity for children to eat while their in school, or at least eat endlessly, compared to
when their at home. As a result whether or not junk food is available to them in at school may not
have much bearing on how much junk food they eat (6). For lack of a better statement, students can t
eat as much at school as they can when their at home. Whether kids have access to junk food or not, it
is believed them gaining weight from it isn t an issue. As quoted by Radford, kids with access to junk
food at school were no heavier than those without (2). To be blunt, kids who eat junk food aren t going
to be any heavier than anyone else.

10. Leadership In We Were Soldiers And Gettysburg
The application of leadership is not solely determined by a leader s experience, personal traits, or
characteristics but the understanding of the situation the leader is in. Situational leadership must take
all factors which can influence their decision into the formulation of the appropriate response
necessary. I have chosen the movies We Were Soldiers and Gettysburg to analyze the similarities and
differences of leadership styles and how they were applied The movie Gettysburg was written and
directed by Ronald F. Maxwell and premiered in 1993 with Stephen Lang playing George E. Pickett.1
This movie is about the lead up, planning, trials and tribulations, strategies, successes and failures that
leads to one of the most decisive battles in the Civil War The Battle of Gettysburg which some believe
is where the Union took control of the war. These were 3 of the bloodiest days during the Civil War in

In my opinion leadership is referred to as an art because every leader will look at a situation and
provide a different result or approach. Another lesson leaders can take away from these movies is to
show compassion and understanding for your Soldiers since they will execute your decisions. Lastly,
time was crucial in every aspect of both these movies. Time is necessary to train as LTC Moore did
prior to deployment, then the time it took to readjust Soldiers on the battlefield, and the time to make a
decisive decision for the organization such as LTC Moore calling in broken arrow. COL Chamberlain
displayed the importance of time when deciding that the bayonet charge will consist of a wheel tactic
from the flank. Time is one of the most crucial elements a leader must consider because it can cost

Homophobia, the LGBT and Sodomy laws. Sexual orientation is an enduring emotional, romantic,

12. Sleeping Beauty Analysis
In The Royal Ballet s video, The Sleeping Beauty: The Challenges of technically demanding roles,
principal dancers Sarah Lamb and Steven McRae as well repetiteur Alexander Agadzhanov and
former director and producer Dame Monica Mason discuss the technical challenges of the lead roles in
the ballet The Sleeping Beauty and how dancers must balance the technical difficulty of the roles with
their artistry. Ballerina Sarah Lamb notes that one of the most difficult aspects of dancing the role of
Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty is the stamina that the role requires. Particularly, the repetitive
movements that she must complete. In order to prepare, she works with Agadzhanov, the repetiteur, on
repetition of the choreography in Act 1 so that she can build stamina and not be tired during the actual
performances. This strategy is similar to the structure of ballet study in general. Every class, we start
by working the basic movements (plies, tendus, etc) on the barre to train and prepare our bodies for
the work we do in the center such as petite allegro. Obviously it takes an immense amount of
preparation and training at the barre in order to see the results in the center. Personally, I have been
taking ballet classes since I was a toddler, but if the petite allegro we do in class is very quick, it is as
if I have never taken a ballet before. The music demands my body to move so fast that my technique
cannot quite keep up. Suddenly, my toes are not pointed and my alignment not held. Like Lamb, I
must do countless repetitions to build up my stamina and technique so that my body is ready when I
come to the center of the studio just as she does when she goes into performance. During this short
documentary, Lamb really emphasizes how as a role, Aurora is both an artistic and technical
challenge. She describes how the steps that she does look so simple, yet it is is difficult to do them
with lightness and finesse. Particularly, the characterization of Aurora requires a lightness and
buoyancy because she is sixteen year old girl on her birthday. I have never performed a ballet before,
only group ballet dances in dance recitals, so I have never explored character development in relation
to ballet dancing; however, I do

13. Islamic Legal Reformers Of The Twentieth Century
I. Introduction As Talal Asad has noted, religion is by no means disappearing in the modern world,
and, [i]f anything is agreed upon, it is that a straightforward narrative of progress from the religious to
the secular is no longer acceptable. (Asad: 2003: 1.) At the same time, and in relation particularly to
the contemporary rise of Islam, [t]he question of secularism has emerged as an object of academic
argument and of practical dispute. (Ibid.) The common view is that Islam and secular modernism
constitute a duality, forever at odds, while others argue that the religious and the secular are a false
duality and are indeed mutually constitutive of each other. (Agrama: 2). Viewed either way, the
resurgence of Islam gives rise to important questions regarding its relationship to the secular modern
state. In this short paper, I propose to engage with the works of two Islamic legal reformers of the
twentieth century: Mohammed Abduh s classic Theology of Unity , first published in 1897, and
Ahmad Safwat s lesser known article, The Theory of Mohammedan Law, published in a British law
journal in 1920. Though quite different, both works are emblematic of this period in Islamic history
when traditional Islamic law struggled to identify its proper role with respect to the increasing power
and transcendence of the modern secular state. Moreover, each work is representative of two views of
Islam and secular modernism and represent the genesis of both

CASE STUDY MINI CASE: BP GULF OF MEXICO OIL SPILL
CASE SUMMARY
1. In a narrative format, summarize the key facts and issues of the case.
In the case of the BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill, we examine the effects of an organization not being
prepared for this particular crisis. The world scrutinized the actions, inactions, and the human
decisions made by BP that led to a major catastrophic crisis. The organization was not prepared for a
crisis of this magnitude. Our text stated that this type of negligence has been coined the term sloppy
management. They were oblivious to the issues pertaining to the deep waters, the ocean wildlife and
the habitats of those marine animals. They were not knowledgeable of several things, along with their
initial conundrum of frantically searching for a way to stop the continued spilling of the oil into the
ocean. One article quoted an official saying, We knew how to respond to a surface spill, but this is
completely different. (Bond, D. 2013).
With the modern technology we have, and the easy access, also known as, information age , the media
and social media only seemed to intensify the effects of the crisis (Crandall, W, Parnell, J. Spillan, J.
2013). This broadened the awareness of certain environmental issues and caused a panic among the
populations. The elite scientists were faced with new issues due to the oil spill that they too had never

16. Peace And Violence By Galtung
As I tried to conceptualize the idea of violence and what it means, physical force such as: assault,
bullying, abuse, rape, murder, war, terrorism, genocide amongst many more came to mind. However,
what is considered violence depends on the social context and the type of violence described, because
as we have learned in class so far, Violence is Relative. So what really is violence? There is not an
easy explanation of the term without taking into consideration that violence can not only be physical
but also psychological, emotional, and verbal. I believe violence to be a form of expressed aggression
either physical, psychological, emotional, and verbal showcased by an individual. In the paper we will

depending on intentional violence or not necessarily intentional (Galtung, 1969). In my understanding,
if an act of violence such as hurting a person intentionally it could mean that it is unacceptable.
However, if an act of violence were not necessarily intentional depending on the social context, it
would be acceptable. Direct violence, which serves to physically induced threats such as killing,
bullying, sexual assault, and emotional manipulation could serve as unacceptable violence since its
intentional. The Child Beater by Ai, and Death Warrant by district judge Issac Parker, are good
representations as to how they intentionally use physical violence against a victim to cause harm. In
Child Beater , we read about how the abusive mother uses cruel punishments such as starvation and
viciously beats the child to tears (Ai, 1971). This would be a representation of direct violence since the
mother causes physical threats against the child however, it could also be structural violence since the
child is prevented from an equal access to opportunities such as food and living conditions. In our
western society, our viewpoint of the violence inflicted would be unacceptable since it the mother is
conducting child abuse, something that is seen as illegal. From personal experience, in many hispanic
families for example, their form of cultural violence includes using different forms of punishments to
discipline their children such as spankings. While forms of punishments such as the ones described in
Child Beater are unacceptable, spankings are a form of violence that is acceptable in many homes. In
the reading Death Warrant , the author also uses direct violence and structural as he verbally implies
on the warrant sign that when the suspect is dead no one will miss him, life will go on

Running head: SPINAL CORD INJURY
Spinal Cord Injury
Shannon G. Johnston, RN, CEN
Liberty University
Abstract
There are many types of spinal cord injuries (SCI). Patients with SCI can symptoms that range from
mild neurologic impairment (such as numbness and tingling of extremities or neck pain) to
devastating total body paralysis depending on the extent of damage and where in the spinal cord the
damage occurs. Management of airway, breathing and circulation are key with SCI patients, as well as
immediate immobilization. With proper care and intervention, chances of survival are greatly
improved.
Spinal Cord Injury
Spinal cord injuries (SCIs) most commonly occur as a result of falls, motor vehicle accidents,
violence, sports ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These injuries can also be classified as complete or incomplete. A complete SCI indicates no motor
function below the site of injury while incomplete SCIs can have some remaining level of sensory
and/or motor function below the level of injury.
Most vertebral injuries occur along the most mobile areas of the spinal cord, including C1 C2, C4 C7,
and T10 L2 (Huether, 2010). All of these injuries have the potential to be devastating. Spinal shock
can occur, resulting in complete loss of function. This is a temporary occurrence and usually lasts up
to 3 months after injury. It involves paralysis, loss of reflex, loss of bladder/bowel control and sexual
dysfunction. It can also cause systemic changes, such as loss of temperature control, decrease in blood
pressure, and poor venous circulation. When function returns, it is usually demonstrated by return of
movement, reflexes, and bowel/bladder control (Heuther, 2008).
As function returns, an uncompensated cardiovascular response can occur called autonomic
hyperreflexia. This is a life threatening emergency and must be treated immediately. If left untreated,
the result is death. Autonomic hyperreflexia displays as a dramatic rise in blood pressure, pounding
headache, excessive diaphoresis (sweating), nausea and bradycardia. This is caused by stimulation of
the skin or pain

company that Pizza Hut competes with. And all of them have very similar business pattern, engage in
international business, fast food franchise, delivery service and dine in which creates intense
competition. Pizza Hut also competes with small pizza restaurant as they offer faster service and lower

Threats of new entrants, LOW. Now, Pizza Hut is facing the effect of a deep recession due to more
competition, high ingredient costs and slim margins. However, existing competitors keep giving

have mature technology and relationship with different distribution channels. Therefore, current
competitors have a first mover advantages.

Social media: (noun pl but singular or pl in constr) forms of electronic communication (as Web sites

information, ideas, personal messages, and other content.
Social media has developed to allow for information to be shared instantaneously: image and video
sharing, spontaneous group get togethers, and worldwide, real time news announcements are sent
through time and space with the click of a button, and can spread like wildfire.
In the following pages we will discuss several aspects of social media and how it affects our culture.

The emergence of interacting socially through the use of the Internet began with Email. The
information contained in an Email message has the ability to be delivered instantly to one or many, as
well as forwarded to other recipients with the click of the mouse. This enables widespread, viral like
interactions to cross the plane of space and time, and impact society and culture on a global scale.
Email continues to be the largest social network online today. (Owyang, 2014) We use Email for
everything from business correspondences, to sharing photos and videos. Most Americans have at
least one email address; in fact, the average number of email accounts per person is 3.1.
(toptenreviews.com) Different uses of Email can require different email addresses. For example: one
for work, one personal, and one for SPAM (also known as Internet junk mail.) It seems however that
using Email to connect to the people we know has its limitations; we need to know who the people

22. Appeasement Policy Essay
Today, the Appeasement policy that Britain and France in the period of German aggression, was one
of the main factors historians would consider to have caused the Second World War. Had the British or
any of the Allied powers, intervened in Nazi expansionism, the war could have been prevented as
early as 1936, when Germany violated the Treaty of Versailles with the occupation of the Rhineland.
The Appeasement is seen as the act of cowardice and of poor judgement of the world powers. Britain,
in particular, is in the spotlight. It was still considered the major power as well as the leader the rest of
the world looked upon to champion democracy and to uphold its position as the winner of the first
world war. There are arguments that with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To the British government, risking war will only bring in more costs and conflicts they did not need.
This also means that perhaps the lack of intervention to the British was not seen as an act of
cowardice, but simply an act for convenience the idea that it is too much trouble to go to war. Besides
the fact that Britain already had a lot on its plate, perhaps the primary reason why Britain did not get
into conflict with Germany is because of the public consensus that they the people simply did not want
to go to war. Britain did not stand up to the Nazis, because the British people did not want to stand up
to the Nazis. Throughout Europe, not just in Britain, memories of the first world war was still very
much present in people s minds. To people at the time, they were currently living through its direct
consequences. The British public insisted that everything must be done so that war would not occur.
Indeed, the policy of appeasement is evidence of that, on its own. But this can be seen most strikingly
on September 15, 1938. Britain realized that Germany s attack on Czechoslovakia would lead to war
with France and the Soviet Union, which also implies inevitable British involvement in the conflict. In
which case, Chamberlain met with Hitler at Berchtesgaden where Britain forced the Czechs to give up

supported our hypothesis that the Tetahymena in a higher concentration of ink would show more

similar experiment by Bazzone (2000), as cells in a higher ink concentration showed fewer vacuoles

the ink concentrations to include 10% ink and examined cells at the timepoints 2, 10, 20, and 30

when they are not starved. Additionally, phagocytosis is a microfilament dependent process that does

27. Sodomy Case
Throughout history in the United States, we have had a hard time accepting the concept of
homosexuality and skewing from the idea that we are all gender binary. The police began to enforce
what is known as the sodomy law to discriminate against those who do not comply with the norm of
gender binary. The sodomy law can be defined as oral/anal sex between two partners (could be two
women, two men, or a man and a woman). It has been present within our society for two centuries and
has historically been a crime that went unenforced, for the most part, if committed by two consenting
adults in private. Two specific cases became well known for attempting to fight the law to gain rights
for same sex couples who have been discriminated against due to ... Show more content on

disappointing for supporters. The decision was criticized widely because it was sending the message
to the world that homosexual relations were not accepted or supported in this country. They were not
receiving the same rights heterosexual citizens were. The result lead to the question of why the State
may be permitted to apply a generally applicable law to certain persons that it does not apply to others
(Bowers v. Hardwick, 1986), referencing the state choosing to arrest homosexual partners but never
heterosexual partners for sodomy. It makes it seem as if as a nation, we allow discrimination because
even our cops and government officials participate in it. Alternatively for Lawrence and the ACLU,
their case was a tremendous success. It was successful in completing their goal of diminishing the

28. Max Weber s Politics As A Vocation
He who seeks the salvation of the soul, of his own and of others, should not seek it along the avenue
of politics, for the quite different tasks of politics can only be solved by violence , stated Max Weber
in his lecture Politics as a Vocation (Weber 4). In order to participate in politics, an individual will
inevitably encounter times when they must break with traditional morality. An ethic of ultimate ends is
not realistic or plausible for the field of politics, particularly when it is followed steadfastly. An ethic
of responsibility is more compatible with politics, as it allows the response to a situation to be
determined by the circumstances rather than inflexible rules, while still maintaining accountability for
one s own actions. This flexibility is most necessitated by the politicians use of violence. There is a
fallacy that an ethic of ultimate ends and an ethic of responsibility are incompatible and cannot be
reconciled. A politician can follow an ethic of responsibility, while still following certain ethical
principles of ultimate ends, on which they will hold their ground. Weber states, ... an ethic of ultimate
ends and an ethic of responsibility are not absolute contrasts but rather supplements, which only in
unison constitute a genuine man a man who can have the calling for politics (Weber 4). True morality
in politics is found in the compromise between the competing ethical codes, and the ability to discern
when this compromise is necessary is

30. Fake Identity, Rumors, And Cyberbullying
Before discussing the problems, arising from the inappropriate use of social media networks, it is
helpful to understand what social media are. Kaplan and Haenlein (2010,p.210) define social media as
a group of Internet based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of
Web 2.0(cumulative changes in the way Web pages are made and used) . Social networks, based on
social media, allow individual (1) public personal information within a bounded system, (2) find
people who share a same connection, (3) view other people s connection (Nicole, 2007). With
technology more and more mature, social networks encompass nearly any online activity. However,
broad activities and blurred boundaries trigger inappropriate use, leading to many problems. This
essay will focus on fake identity, rumors, and cyberbullying.
The first problem is about fake identity. Internet identity is a social identity, established by Internet
user. Compared with national identity, Internet identity is more unreliable. A new regulatory filing
displays, 8.7 percent of its 955 million monthly active users worldwide are actually duplicate or false
accounts (Kelly, 2012). Minority people use fake identities based on professional, security or creative
reasons, such as identity not suitable to be disclosed, famous by another name than the real one (Eler,
2012). However, more people are using fake identities for deception.
Fake identity creates a new definition of the word Catfish .

unemployment rates, and corporate downfall as a result of the great depression. Hence, the idea of

Many film critics have argued that these two films resemble each other even though they were

32. Use Of Verbal And Non Verbal Communication
Communication plays a vital role in our lives every day, whether it is verbal or non verbal. It helps us
to communicate our needs, thoughts, and feelings. In this paper one will analyze the three short film
clips of Alice Walker: Everyday Use ; 1) Dee s Arrival, 2) Dee s Conflict, and 3) Quaint Southern
Meal. Based on one s understanding of each film, one will discuss the concept of verbal, and non
verbal communication, as well as the importance of listening skills.
Based on the text, communication is the process of sending and receiving messages that allows
individuals to share their knowledge and skills. Although most individuals associate communication
with speech, it has many other attributes, and it is mainly composed of two essential dimensions that
include; verbal and nonverbal communication.
Verbal Communication
Verbal communication acts is the most essential tool used by human beings to express their thoughts,
emotions, ideas, desires, and concepts. The key factors of verbal communication can be associated
with sounds, languages and speech in which individuals use to communicate a message.
Nonverbal Communication
Based on the text, nonverbal communication can be defined as a style of communication without
using words. Nonverbal communication includes actions such as facial expression, eye staring, hand
motion, touching, and body movement. Lapakko, (1997) maintains that, nonverbal communication is
just as important in the human life as verbal communication.

The elements of imagery are seen in the poem when Abel writes The bulgin eyes and the twisted
mouth (6). The sentence describes a very horrid image of how the African Americans looks as they
were being hanged against their will. This depicts imagery because it gives a very detailed image in
the reader s mind of how they looked like as they were hanged. Personification is present in the poem
Strange Fruit when Meeropol writes For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck (10). This is
personification because it gives the rain the trait of gathering things, and it also gives the wind the trait
of sucking. Within the poem, Meeropol also includes juxtaposition, for example when he says Scent of
magnolias sweet and fresh/ Then the sudden smell of burnin flesh (7 8). This is an example of
juxtaposition because it brings out the difference between the sweet smell of a flower, and the bad
dark smell of burning flesh, and it makes the difference between those things more apparent.
Throughout the poem Strange Fruit Meeropol also uses metaphors, such as when he puts Southern
trees bear a strange fruit (1) in his poem. The entire poem itself is a metaphor because the poem
compares African Americans that have been lynched, and the strange fruit that hangs from trees. The
poem is comparing the strange fruit to it actually being the African Americans that were

JEWISH RESISTANCE: Jewish resistance is a very untold and important part of World War II. As the
war grew and the Nazi s occupied many European countries, resistance grew and intensified. Those
who could escape the ghettos and work camps joined partisan groups. In the early 1940 s,
underground resistance movements developed in about 100 ghettos. There were about 20,000 30,000
Jewish Partisans and their main goal was to break out of the ghettos, save as many Jews as they could,
and fight against the Germans. Many Jews operated as partisans, whether as part of individual Jewish
units or as members of non Jewish units (Yad Vashem, n.d.). Although there was a much greater
network of Gestapo and SS Guards, Jewish partisans mainly operated within Nazi occupied Eastern
Europe including the Ukraine, Belorussia, Lithuania, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Romania,
Hungary, and Poland as well as France, Belgium, Greece, and Italy. Eastern Europe, especially
Belorussia, the western Ukraine, and Lithuania had a wide array of forests and swamps which were
ideal for guerrilla warfare. Unlike Eastern Europe, it was impossible to form partisan groups in
Western Europe because of the open terrain. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Approximately 20,000 Jews had survived. These Jews had become a workforce for the Germans until
the ghetto was liquidated in 1943. Only about 2,000 to 3,000 Jews survived this liquidation. Before
the liquidation, there was a Jewish resistance movement but it did not last very long because of the
upcoming liquidation. The Jewish resistance members fought against the Germans when they began to
deport more Jews. Only a few of the ghetto fighters survived the final destruction of the ghetto and
they joined other existing partisan

39. How Is Sohma Presented In Persepolis
Marjane Satrapi s Persepolis is an autobiographical graphic novel that illustrates her life in both Iran
and Europe. Marjane is sent away by her parents to Austria in an attempt to shield her from the
growing oppression of the Islamic regime in Tehran. In Austria, Marjane soon sees herself as an
outsider, and after four years moves back to Tehran. While in Tehran, Marjane still feels lonely, as she
has carried western ideals in a society that adamantly rejects western customs. She becomes depressed
and even attempts suicide. Fruits Basket is a Japanese animation, or anime, that incorporates the
Chinese zodiac into its story. The Sohma family is cursed with Chinese zodiac, which means that
whenever a member is stressed or is hugged by the opposite ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

An example of this is Kisa Sohma s story shown in episode 17. When first introduced, Kisa is already
transformed into a tiger. In an attempt to have Kisa turn back into a human, Tohru tries to comfort her.
This scene is six minutes into the episode. Kisa bites Tohru, and Kisa s mother makes her appearance.
Instead of being maternal and comforting, Kisa s mother sounds defeated. She admonishes Kisa,
saying What are you doing, causing nothing but trouble to those around you? (Tachibana). While Kisa
s mother is scolding Kisa, Beethoven s Moonlight Sonata plays in the background, elevating the
sadness of this scene. Tohru watches this unfold, and remembers what Momiji (the rabbit) tells her
about mothers who have children born of the zodiac curse. According to Momiji, mothers will either
be overly protective of their children or reject them completely. In this scene, Kisa s mother is shown
to be on the brink of rejecting Kisa. Tohru is able to comfort Kisa enough for her to transform back
into a human, and it is decided that it would be best for Kisa and her mother to spend some time apart
from each

Inked into Crime? An Examination of the Casual Relationships between Tattoos and Life Course
Offending among males from the Cambridge Study in Delinquent Development (Jennings, Hahn,
Farrington 2014) and Nonmainstream Body Modification: Genital Piercing, Branding, Burning, and
Cutting (Myers 1992). Jennings, Hahn, and Farrington s article investigates the correlation between
tattoos and deviant behavior. In addition, the researches ultimately want to discover if the relationship
between tattoos and crime may in fact be casual, or are just another symptom of developmental risk
factors and personality traits (Jennings, Hahn, Farrington 79). ... Show more content on

Included in the study were males, females, homosexuals, heterosexuals, and bisexuals. Myers spent a
vast amount of time exploring various workshops and tattoo/piercing studios observing, interviewing,
and lecturing individuals on his current study. An example of this is when Myers attended the Living
in Leather Convention as he stated I was able to expand my involvement by showing my body
modification slides to several people, attending parties, and helping out at the host organization s
hospitality suite (1992:176). Though both studies rely heavily on body modification, they differ in a
couple of ways. While the first study was considered a longitudinal study, the second one was
considered a quasi experimental study. The first study was done in a period of 53 years while the
second study was done in a period of 2 years. Another difference is that the first study relied on a
different type of sampling than the second. The first one involved quota sampling because the
researchers knew exactly who they wanted to choose for participants in their study. The second study
involved both random and accidental sampling for data observation and collection.
I believe that Jennings, Hahn, and Farrington s (2014) study was less effective than Myer s study.
Though Jennings, Hahn, and Farrington s study is the first longitudinal study to measure tattoo crime
link, there are a few limitations. Instead of using a quota sample of

41. The Negative Consequences Of Noise Pollution
Ahmed Sami Hassan
Dr. Clark
ENG 1101
06 June 2015 Noise Pollution What is the Noise Pollution? The term noise pollution used to define
unwanted sounds that come from many sources such as barking dogs, loud music; vehicles, aircraft
and rail transport; air conditioners, factories; amplified music and construction work released into the
environment. Noise pollution has adverse effects on both human health and environment.
One of the most obvious negative consequences of prolonged exposure to noise is hearing loss.
Studies show that people who have been regularly exposed to intense noise, due to the nature of their
work, have decreased hearing sensibility, compared to those who have worked in more quiet
conditions. The most disturbing source of noise pollution stems from traffic (Healthy Hearing).
Elevated sound levels cause changes in the structure of the inner ear which results in irreversible
hearing loss.
The Studies found any sound levels crosses the 70dB mark; it becomes noise for the ear. Noise levels
above 80 decibels produce damaging effects to the ear. When ear is exposed to extreme loud noise
(above 100 decibels) for a considerable period of time, it can cause irreparable damage and lead to
permanent hearing loss. Sleep Disturbances is one of the noise pollution effects that can deter your
overall well being. Noise can interrupt a good night s sleep, and when this occurs, the person feels
extremely annoyed and uncomfortable. People deprived of uninterrupted sleep show a sharp dip in
their energy levels which often results into extreme fatigue. This can considerably decrease a person s
ability to work efficiently. Noise pollution may also lead to mental health problems. Exposure to loud
sound can result in elevated stress levels as well as stimulate violent behavior. A constant noise in the
vicinity can also trigger headaches, make people tense and anxious, and disturb emotional balance.
Another effect of noise pollution is on cardiovascular issues. Studies have shown that high intensity
sound cause a dramatic rise in blood pressure as noise levels constrict the arteries, disrupting the blood
flow. The heart rate (the number of heartbeats per minute) also increases. These sudden abnormal
changes in

42. Body Imagery In Art Analysis
Hollander discusses a new tradition of painting half length portraits and first leads the reader through
the gradual move to more erotic and sensual images portrayed in artworks. She presents works by
Titian and Tintoretto and explains that artists of the period portrayed real people in exotic poses,
sometimes with bare chested men or semi exposed women s breasts, and titled their works as mythical
characters. Throughout the chapter, the author leads the reader through a variety of images that show
the gradual progression of exposed skin in artworks, from draped modern garments assuming folds of
classical draperies, which revealed parts of the body, to works such as Caravaggio s Boy Bitten by a
Lizard (1571 1610) where the attention on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She describes how an abundance of drapery surrounding the sitter expressed wealth, or as seen in
Francisco de Zurbarian s Saint Serapion (1598 1664), monochromatic heavy woolen garments add a
sense of emotional burden to what is already seen in the facial and body imagery. Hollander also
describes how artist Johann Liss uses bright, hectic, swirling drapery to add drama and a sexual
distraction to the murder scene depicted in his painting Judith in the Tent of Holofernes (1595 1631).
In all the examples Hollander presents, she illustrates how fabric and draperies were used by artists of
the late sixteenth early seventeenth century to evoke a particular emotion relative to the subject matter
and not just for depicting utilitarian clothing to cover the body.
Ending the chapter is a discussion of the Hollywood photographers use of the ½ portrait which often
depicts exposed skin and draped garments to convey sensuality and the sitters consciousness of one s
beauty. According to Hollander, this shows that the Baroque spirit in portraiture has held on into the
modern

43. Hermaphrodites, or What We Call in Modern Times, Intersexuals
Hermaphrodites, or what we call in the modern times: intersexuals, are misunderstood throughout the
entire world. Often times when we hear the word intersexuals or hermaphrodites we automatically
have a negative connotation towards them. However, what most people do not realize is that
hermaphroditism is in fact very common for quite a long period of time. Records were dated back to
even the time when Plato was alive. However, the idea, or the actual concept of a third gender has
only become less and less accepting the last one to two centuries. These individuals biologically have
sexual characteristics intermediate of those typically male or female seems to medical progressives as

While in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Dr. Hugh H Young of Johns Hopkins University, the father of
the medical studies for hermaphroditism and the author of the book Genital Abnormalities,
Hermaphroditism and related Adrenal Diseases , explored numerous people who were intersexuals and
discovered that the majority of them were content with their lives, and did not develop any
psychological problems or scars. A notable case would be a woman named Emma who had grown up
as a female with a vagina and a penis sized clitoris. As a teenager, Emma would have sexual
intercourses with other women but eventually she married a man. Although she had a husband, there
had not been too many sexual activities therefore Emma would have other girlfriends on the side to
fulfill her pleasures.
As an embryo, we are created with both ovaries and testes. As we grow, either the ovaries or testes
will begin to develop further while the other will begin to degenerate (Fausto Sterling, 2000).
However, often times the one that degenerates does not diminish the entire way, therefore making
them ambiguous genitalia. Our medical community destroys our perception of hermaphrodites by
telling us that hermaphroditism is very uncommon and should be treated as soon as birth because the
victims would be psychologically damaged from bullying and being different (ISNA, 2001). In reality,
there has been no
