The Lottery By Shirley Jackson Setting Essay
Does a beautiful sunny morning in an average little town sound like a setting fit for a stoning
occurring later that day? The setting of a story is very important to the storyline and gives meaning
to each element and theme of the story. The setting of The Lottery by Shirley Jackson has
extremely significant meaning to the plot of this story. The setting represents elements of irony,
tradition, and unity.
The mood in the beginning of the story is cheerful and appears to be a normal day. The children
are playing, the men are talking about planting and rain, tractors and taxes (Jackson 1). Nothing
seems to be abnormal about this particular day. This is a very unusual description of townspeople s
activities and conversations knowing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The boys as we find out in the end are involved in a tragic and awful stoning of a fellow
townsperson with the help of members in the community. The irony comes from the assumption of
innocent play that leads to the killing of an innocent woman.
The lottery takes place at the beginning of the summer. The children have recently started their
summer vacation and people are getting ready for summer activities. Usually during the summer,
time is being spent having fun. People usually are enjoying and celebrating the sun and doing fun
activities when the weather is very nice. The irony in this is that the town is doing the complete
opposite of these common events. The events this town participates in is the stoning of an innocent
person. This is very dark and sad, which is completely opposite of the bright, warm sign that they
should be celebrating and enjoying at this time.
There was one last ironic element displayed. Irony is found in the fact that the women who was
complaining and soon killed in the end was the only women speaking up and making a joke
about the lottery before the drawing occurred. The women named Tessie jokingly states: Get up
there, Bill (4). When her husband s name was called. She acts as if this whole event is all fun
and games, and probably does not think she will pick the paper with the black spot making her
the one to be stoned. After her jokes, her family is selected to pick out of the box again. She picks

Military Leadership Analysis
Managing a group is simply a matter of holding a position of authority and executing inherent
duties of that role; however, being a true leader requires a special blend of personal knowledge
and traits used to shape those under your charge for the better. Great leaders not only strive to
shape their element into a better version of itself, but also attempt to improve the larger
organizational structure at every level. The purpose of this paper is to review an influential
military leader to identify key traits and achievements of the individual, and how they coalesce to
create a true legacy leader. The intent behind this examination is to articulate how this leader
impacted the United State (US) military as well as my own personal growth... Show more content

Upon entering the SOF community I saw the breadth of roles and responsibilities given to the
NCO was greater than that of my conventional counterparts. This left me with the daunting task
of filling these roles and gave me a greater sense of pride in the NCO core. The environment
established for the NCO left a lot of room for growth which most NCOs are more than happy to
use. This environment and subsequent growth results in an NCO core full of excellent Soldiers
within the SOF community. However, if not balanced with the same sense of humility displayed
by COL. Beckwith, these NCOs could fall victim to their own pride, hindering their utility as
Army leaders. I have strived to remain humble and instead seek ways of sharing my knowledge
and experience while learning from others to avoid this pitfall of

Branson Reeve s Development
Branson Reeve s development has been consistent and on track for his age. His intelligence level
is exceedingly advanced, especially in the areas of math and science. In addition, his cognitive
abilities (verbal, spatial, and logical) appear to be rapidly enhancing. At the age of 6, we
enrolled him in basketball and tennis, which he has developed a passion for. Through this, he
built up the courage to cheat and lie in order to win or have his way. This made me realize that
he has not yet developed a sense of morality. Within social groups, he is continuing his act of
shyness, but is still well liked by his peers. Recently, his father and I got back together. We became
aware of the negative impacts it was causing in Branson Reeve s life. In... Show more content on

Branson Reeve has became a teacher s pet and loves to stay after school to help in the classroom.
He continues to be superior, quiet leader amongst his peers. Also, he is now able to concentrate
far longer on tasks than he could before. To no surprise, his end of the year report informed that
he had developed strengths in each area of discipline. Towards the end of his 5th grade year, his
school began the process of transitioning the students into 6th grade. The teachers helped the
students plan their schedule and took multiple field trips to the middle school. Branson Reeve is
incredibly excited about this transition. However, the summer before his 6th grade year included
a vast amount of fear and worry. He is terrified of all the stereotypical rumors, such as being
dumped in a trash can or tripped by an 8th grader. I am quick to reassure his doubts by informing

The Glass Menagerie Mental Illness Essay
Issue #1: Stigma of Mental Illness Both Williams and Gaita employs the stigma against mental
illness as a significant issue within both literary texts. Mental illness of the two prominent
female characters within separate texts, namely Christine from Romulus my Father, and Laura
from The Glass Menagerie is a prominent element in the story as it shapes the interpretation of
the audience. The employment of these characters allow the author to shed light to values and
attitudes of which the society holds against mental illness, irrespective of the time period. In
The Glass Menagerie, Laura s character serves as the victimised manifestation of mental illness.
The unfortunate character of Laura Wingfield suffered from anxiety and a limp on the leg . Her
anxiety is made extremely evident in Scene 2, whereby Amanda confronted Laura about her
absence at Rubicam s Business College: Amanda: Laura, where have you been going when you
ve gone out pretending that you were going to business college? Laura: It was lesser of the two
evils, Mother. I couldn t go back there. I threw up on the floor! (Scene 2, pg. 13) Laura s absence
from the college signifies her inability to cope around places with people, resulting her to spend the
day in the the park... zoo... and art museum . Her introverted attitudes inhibit her ability to socialise

that she has no control over her action should be considered and she be given a degree of sympathy.
The extent of her illness was not recognised by the people around her at that time and their actions
only fuelled her disintegration into insanity. This lack of understanding and acknowledgement
resulted in the unfortunate demise of an unfortunate soul,

Theories Of The Common Sense
Questioning whether or not people make choices seems to be an arbitrary concept to ponder.
Common sense causes one to believe that, of course, humans make choices daily. Even now,
common sense dictates that it is a choice to read this paper or even for this paper to be written at
all. However, according to one form of early philosophy, common sense has led society astray.
Each event that occurs throughout the universe has causation such that one never acts of his or
her own free will. This theory of the absence of free will, known as hard determinism, has three
main premises as its basis. The first premise states that no event is uncaused (Kleinman 64). This
appeals to humanity s practicality; for every force, there is an equal and opposite force. One
reaps what he or she sows. What goes around, comes around. This form of logic demonstrated in
the first premise satisfies society s intrinsic desire for predictability and reason. The second
premise then states that if an event is caused, it must occur; likewise, if it must occur, no other
outcome could be achieved. Thus, if every event s outcome is predetermined through causation,
no man can act against it; this tenet makes up the third and final premise (Kleinman 64).
Therefore, based upon these three premises, no man holds the power of free will. As can be
imagined, hard determinism appears to have a few holes in its validity as a theory. A person, for
instance, consciously makes choices each day, such as choices of diet

Shift Workers in Canada Essay
Shift Workers in Canada The scheduling of hours of work is undoubtedly one of the major
social problems of industrial society. Statistic estimates that 30% of Canada s workforce are
involved in some kind of shiftwork. Of those, 33% work irregular shifts, just under 30% work
rotating shifts, 17% work long term evening shifts, 10% work on call, 3% work split shifts, 3%
work long term night shifts and just over 3% are classed as other . Present estimates tell us that
before the trend slows, fully 35% of the workforce will work some type of shiftwork (Siroonian

One study found shiftworkers had twice as high a rate of ulcers as day workers did. Others have
linked shiftwork with problems like heartburn, loss of appetite, diarrhea and constipation
(Aanonsen 57). Few shiftworkers escape their years on rotation without experiencing at least
one of those symptoms. It is because that they are not eating at traditional meal times, and eat
junk food or other snacks that are quick and convenient (Aanonsen 58). Caffeine, the shiftworker
s constant companion, and changing meal times from one day to the next may affect gastric
secretions, aggravating digestive problems. Sleep disorders, caused by the disruption of
circadian rhythm, are a common long term health effect experienced by shiftworkers. Fatigue
can also make a person more vulnerable to illness, poor job performance and sagging motivation
(Tasto 26). Because of difficulties getting to sleep or staying awake, shiftworkers may be more
likely to suffer from substance abuse. Some may use alcohol or sleeping pills as a tool to help
them relax and get to sleep at the end of the shift. Others may find themselves using tobacco or
drugs to keep themselves awake and functioning through the day. All these substances can be
addictive, and can lead to other health problems such as heart attack, diabetes and elilepsy (Morgan

The Election of 2000
The election of 2000 was the closest and most controversial election in all U.S. history. This event
was the fierce competition full of irregularities and unfairness between George W. Bush and Al
Gore to become the first president elected in the 21st century that turned into an intense political
and legal battle to decide the presidency. It was such an interesting and unique election because
unlike how elections are supposed to work, the election of 2000, for many unique reasons, did not
end with a clear winner. This event was not only an election, but a test of american democracy that

Ralph Nader was a strong liberal and a radical environmentalist who ran on the Green Party
ticket. Nader took a significant amount of votes away from Gore which would prove to be very
important later on in the race. Pat Buchanan was ultra conservative candidate who ran on the
reform party ticket. He was predicted to take some votes away from Bush, but did not end up
receiving many votes partially due to health problems during his campaign. From near the
beginning of the election many people predicted it would be a close race, but no one could have
imagined exactly how close this race would come. Bush had the first lead that lasted until august
2000 when gore took the lead after the democratic convention. The American people were split
down the middle after Bush and Gore s three televised votes. Bush took most of the south and
west, while Gore took the northeast and California. Gore, however, in a rare case, did not win
his home state of Tennessee which if he had won, would have secured him enough electoral
votes to win the entire election. At the end of the voting it showed that the popular vote was
nearly tied, Gore beating bush by around 500,000 votes, only a 0.5% lead. Bush had 47.9% of
the popular vote and Gore had 48.4%. Ralph Nader had a successful campaign and managed to

The History Of Animals Being Domesticated
The history of animals being domesticated starts as far back as 20,000 years ago, when large
mammals such as bison roamed the tundra of Europe and Asia. They were hunted widely by
two groups of hunters, both smaller and weaker than the bison, but both had sufficient
developed social systems to allow them to hunt and kill in packs. These two hunters were the
humans and the wolves. These two groups of hunters are surprisingly similar. Both are family
based and led by a dominant male whose female partner has authority second to his. All of the
members are friendly towards each other, but extremely suspicious of outsiders. All members
are also protective of any newborn and young in the pack, and both are good at interpreting the
moods of others, by facial expression or other forms of body language. Though humans and
wolves started out competing for the same prey, but soon realized the advantages for both of
them in teaming up. On the side of the wolves, human ingenuity and the use of weapons mean a
share in a greater number of kill, and maybe a taste of bigger pretty they couldn t take down
alone, such as mammoths. On the side of humans, the speed of the wolves and ferocity is
equivalent to a new weapon altogether. The partnership between the two is natural. People love to
nurture an abandoned young animal, and a wolf cub is adapted to learn the rules of a hierarchical
human society. For a species like the wolf to become domesticated, it must be willing to breed in

Advantages Of Virtual Teams
To qualify to be a virtual team, either some or all team members would not be physically in the
same location. This doesn t necessarily mean that they are not in the same country or city, more
about whether they meet each other physically on a daily basis. Even though they don t have to be,
most of virtual teams are across countries.
Motivation to work in virtual teams: Half own choice and half the context in which the job is
placed in.
Personal motivation and advantages of the team: One can access different expertise and capabilities
across the country/continent, which one might not have access to within the office or location.

The main challenges is to adapt the communication, how to adapt their performance management
which each individual depending on the culture.
For newer generations (people who have already worked abroad have been used to work in cross
cultural teams) adapting to different cultures is done automatically and common sense. One knows
a bit of cultural dimensions of each of the countries and one is familiar with the working styles of
other countries so can one can adapt a little bit, when interacting with them.
For people who have been only within a British business with British people for a long period of
time, this common sense is less. They have to force themselves to adapt to change the
communication style and to change how they measure performance. This is one of the main
challenges.
When these people manage virtual teams, they often try to flatten /level the differences of the team
members. This usually leads to the team members feeling like they are being forced to work in a
particular (different) style or communicate in a different style, which is not their style and might
not be suitable in the context. Therefore the efficiency of these virtual teams brings frustrations and

Funding Recreational Areas Into The Scholarship
Beyond conservation then, lies the sense that historians have frequently neglected to incorporate
how preservation of specific recreational areas into their scholarship. This is vital considering that
without this frame of reference, conservation is lost within the idea that it is separate from nature.
As an attempt to explain this neglect is the awareness that One group of critics has suggested that
the complexity and stochasticity of natural processes invariably complicate attempts to preserve
wilderness, creating an additional layer suggestive of the thought that scholars shy away from
integrating specific instances of land use in their studies. As Paul Sutter suggests, past historians
have frequently and inadvertently written about conservation, especially in the case of wilderness,
as a form of enclosure. In doing so, Sutter s work correlates with Jacoby s considering that
conservation has been viewed as a worthwhile endeavor, while neglecting to comprehend the
ramifications it had on certain groups. Perhaps most interesting in Sutter s argument, is the
traditional method of examining conservation as a part of the Progressive Movement, leading
historians to consider that nature is simply a human paradigm, and that the ties between nature and
humans are not as significant as they appear.
Paramount to Sutter s argument is his association between conservation and Benton MacKaye. The
author frequently uses MacKaye to illustrate public/private partnerships as have other

Comparing On The Pulse Of The Morning And The Gift Outright
The poems On the Pulse of the Morning, by Maya Angelou and The Gift Outright, by Robert
Frost share many similar aspects, such as being written for presidential inaugurations and
explaining their author s views of America s changing state. However, they differ in key aspects,
such as the intended audience and the formality of the writing. Angelou s poem speaks to a broad,
diverse audience and displays an informal fashion, while Frost directs his poem towards a
predominantly white America and writes in a formal tone. In his poem, Frost speaks directly to the
American population as he sees it a chiefly white society. He refers to the land as ours, referencing
the struggles faced by colonists in the Revolutionary War. Native Americans

Moreover it has been possible to combine and integrate the several perspectives on migration to

Economic migration is concept of relocation of people from one place or country to another

Hilltop College Case Study
Hilltop College Case Study
Hilltop College is a top rated historically black college and university (HBCU) which recently
hired a new university president. President Seymour Rollins has a notable pedigree, but does not
have an affiliation with Hilltop or any other HBCU. President Hardaway, the previous president and
Hilltop alum, retired after overhauling the campus technology system, and setting a record for the
most recent fundraising campaign. President Hardaway was known for being aloof and
authoritarian with student and faculty, and received a vote of no confidence from the faculty senate.
During his tenure, President Rollins created an atmosphere that increased both the student and
faculty morale by opening communications lines between the faculty and administration, while also
building new facilities and research centers. With little information, I am assuming President
Rollins proposed a change in the governance structure of the board leading to the letter from the
vice chairperson noting her displeasure with President Rollins. President Rollins ignored the initial
letter focusing his time on graduation only to be blindsided by an article in Higher Ed Today in June.
Key Problems and Issues
HBCU s are deep rooted in history and tradition. I believe hiring an outsider brought many
reservations from some board members which led to the letter by the vice chairperson. In my
opinion, I believe the vice chairperson leaked the letter to Higher Ed Today since she did

World War II And Its Impact On Japan
After World War II, new influences and ideals started to make an impact on Japan like never

disapproved of this idea of transitioning into being iconic for materialistic and bourgeois ideologies
and now felt isolated within their own country because their views were extremely different from
the new views generated from this change. Yukio Mishimas discomfort with Japan s conversion to
westernization, lack of military and political influence is evident as his main point in The Sailor
Who Fell from Grace with the Sea. Traditional Japanese beliefs had been built off of the ideas of
honor, death, and glory, and Mishima believed that, with this transition into modern Japan, a so

incorporates the theme of alienation to highlight his own life experiences, feelings and disapproval
during Japan s transition to modernization.
Noboru s purpose as a character is to embody the effects of westernization on traditional thinking.
By constructing a peculiarly different lifestyle based upon psychopathic misguidance, fears, hatred,
confusion, and contrasting opinions within his new family, Noboru alienates himself from the

Ovid s Metamorphoses-Analytical Essay
In the story of Ovid s Metamorphoses Arachne, much more is taking place than just a weaving

when approaching scared animals. 11 The results revealed a significant increase in the pulserate
during the exercise as compared to the resting state. A Similar trend was seen after I watched
salamanders as well. From the study, it was concluded that heartrate increases during exercise to
maintain the requirement of bloodby the muscles. There was not a significant difference between
the state of resting and state of exercise. On the other hand, the pulse rate was statistically
significant between the rest and watching salamanders. There was a significant difference between
resting state and watching salamanders state. Watching salamanders has more impact on heart rate
than in resting state. These effects on pulse rate and pulse wave were conducted by using heart rate
sensor instrument. Watching salamanders has much more effects on heart rate than in exercising
state. My null hypothesis is accepted due to watching salamanders causing the heart rate an increase.

Essay on Costing Procedure of Flooring Contrator
You can t take it anymore. If you have to look at those scratches in the living room floor, the foot
traffic stains down the hallway, the Kool aid stains under the dining room table, or the chipped
tile in the kitchen one more time, you might go off the edge and wind up in the looney bin. You
are tired of going to a friend s home and secretly envying their perfect looking floors. Gone are the
days of flipping through magazines and drooling over the pictures of nicely decorated rooms with
flooringthat looks amazing. So you ask your friend what company did their floor and how much it
cost, not to be nosey, but to get an idea. After perusing the flooring aisle of your local home

Labor per square foot is the given rate per square foot of floor area. Initial Preparatory Work
involves all actions required to be completed before the contractor can begin working on the
floor. There are three parts to this section. Initially, all the furniture and fixtures (toilet, sinks not
attached to walls) need to be removed. Depending on the quantity/size of furniture/fixtures that
need to be removed, contractors will typically charge between $15 and $50 per hour. Customers
can cut out this cost if they agree to have the items removed prior to the contractor arriving.
However, if it is agreed upon and the items are not removed, the contractor will usually charge
150% of the normal rate, because this will add additional time to the job, causing him to
possibly run behind schedule for another job, and he schedules jobs based on time estimates.
The next part is the removal and disposal of the existing floor. The price for this can range from
$25 to $75 per hour, based on the type of flooring being removed. Carpet and vinyl are easy to
remove, thus would be on the low end. Tile is more difficult because mortar is used to install it
and all of that has to be broken up and removed. Again, the customer can save during this phase if
they do the removal themselves, with the same penalty if not removed prior to the contractor
arrival. The final part of this phase is repairing the subfloor. Costs for this repair vary greatly on
what needs to be repaired, and are usually

Essay On Scapegoat
Have you ever heard of a scapegoat? Most of us have used one or one s to get out of something,
that meaning good or bad. People in the past have also used someone or something as a
scapegoat(The salem witch trials the townspeople blamed witches and the devil for their bad
crops, The people to the New World blamed the indians for them dieing off by not knowing how to
live off the land, even people today blametheir siblings to get out of their punishments/chores, etc.)
My scapegoat on the other hand is my white, fuzz ball of a cat or other animals, and nature. Me
being the eldest child, I kept to myself and I am very shy. I hide in my room a lot and the only

I had to grow up faster than what my siblings are required to, due to I am expected to have more
responsibilities, be more responsible, be the good influence, and something they look up to.
Having those scapegoats is another thing that make me the person I am today, I can look at
things deeper than others. I can look at something different then what someone else sees, when
they see a disaster, I see potential. By my parents keeping me home all the time allows me to see
that they are just trying to help and show me what I need to expect in the future. They are giving
me a heads up and just trying to help even if it sucks some of the time. There is plenty of
negatives for being the eldest but there is just as many positives. I can sit back and watch other
people s mistakes and learn off of those. I can have a mud wrestling match in the front yard with
my brother. I can get to know my siblings better and become more close with them even if they
don t like me sometimes because I have to be the bigger person and tell them no when something
isn t right.
Like I said before, yes my cat is my scapegoat and yes I do talk to him. I am the eldest child and yes
it does suck at some points but it does have it s advantages. Those things are what makes me the

Essay about Achieving Community Development Goals for AGH...
AKH Group has a history of being in business for the last 35 years and it is almost mandatory for
such an established business to work for community development. Therefore, as a consultant I
would like to suggest the following road map for the purpose of achieving the goals of community
development spend its resources constructively for skill developmentand Primary health.
Strategic options:
Community Development is a process strengthening the society in which an organisation operates
with the aim of enhancing the mental and physical capacity of people to enable them to serve the
society in a better way.
As it is mentioned in the case that AKH group is planning to shell out Rs. 10,000 crore for the

At last, hygienic environment should be maintained to keep their employees free from any kind of
ailments.
Cultural Aspects:
Culture is something which cannot be ignored while implementing any kind of strategies in any
kind of organisation. This is because if any organisation ignores the cultural aspect of any given
community then the chance for its survival reduces to minimum.
Therefore, before spending such huge sums on nation building a thorough study of the cultures and
the sub cultures relating to the particular community is an absolute necessity to ensure its
successful implementation.
This is particularly because in case a skill development programme requires all the ladies to work
for longer shifts in order to enhance their capabilities but in a particular culture women are not
allowed to work after dark then in that case such a development programme cannot be implemented
because such a policy is against the norms of that culture.
Therefore, any organisation should be most careful while studying the culture of a particular
community because it is its most sensitive part particularly in a country like India.
Economy:
Economic situation of a country and the organisation opting for such developmental programmes is
of utmost importance.
First and the foremost aim of any business is its survival. Therefore,

Analysis Of The Road Not Taken
The Road Not Taken is one of the simplest poems written by Robert Frost. It has 4 stanzas, with 5
lines each. The poem presents a crossroads at which the author finds himself. He concludes that
both roads are the same, with the same amount of fallen and untouched leaves. He, however,
chooses one because it seems better to him. He then proceeds on this path, telling himself he
might one day come back to the other. The reality is the opposite, unfortunately. He never does.
The most attractive feature of this poem is the fact that it is relatable to everyone. It represents a
conundrum of choice that is present in every stage of an individual s life. The poem is filled
with a lot of depth and underlying meaning while at the same time having the right form and
composition. The Road Not Taken is constantly misconstrued. Many read it and misinterpret the
words and general meaning of the poem. This literary work is about what one does with their
life, how hard a decision is, and how important it is in determining success and happiness. The
poet acknowledges that the different paths are actually similar, as described in the first line of
the second stanza where the author states that they are just as fair (Frost 6), which mirrors real
life where people assume the grass is always greener. Frost further alludes to this idea by stating
in the first line of the third stanza, both that morning equally lay (Frost 11). He acknowledges
that he might never come back again to the first path even though he hopes to. In the fifth line of
the fourth stanza, Frost admits that though he might want to come back to the path one day, he
knows he never will. He goes on to declare that he shall be saying it with a sigh (Frost 16).
Interestingly, he ends the short poem by stating that he took the road less traveled by and it made
all the difference (Frost 19 20). Consequently, this conclusion creates confusion in the mind of
the reader. Was the road less traveled, or were the two roads the same? It seems that at different
points of his life, the author realizes different aspects of the two roads. The Road Not Taken is the
title of the poem. The subject gives the road used significance as opposed to the one Frost did not

Cases of Overcoming Hardship
Hardship is something everyone must overcome at some point in their lives. Everyone deals
with hardships differently. It is harder for some people to recover from hardship because of their
family, friends, or even because they can t find the will within themselves to deal with hardships.
It would be easier for someone who is naturally determined and strong willed to overcome things
because they have a inbred ability to conquer their fears and leave behind whatever it was that was
making their life unbearable. If parents don t support their kids decisions, such as Jeannette going
to New York, then that can make it harder to triumph over things they struggle with. If friends don
t encourage someone to go on and make something better of themselves, they will hold them back
and they will be stuck in the life everyone expects them to live. Many parents support their children
to learn from their mistakes and make better choices than what they made when they were a kid and
even now. Friends can be a huge part in trying to get over things that they are struggling from. With
the right support and help from them it makes it that much easier to overcome hardships. The
person struggling must find it within themselves to be a better person each day. Not everyone has
the same chance of recovery, but that doesn t mean that they can t do it. They may just have to
worker harder, but that means the reward will be that much better. Jeannette started from the

The Idea of Just in Time Essay example
The Idea of Just in Time The idea of Just In Time originated in Japan. Actually this type of
inventory/production was originally known as the Toyota Production System . A man by the name
of Taiichi Ohno is credited as the person who first came up with this system. He looked at the
Western industries and found that the manufacturers would set up their manufacturing lines to
produce a large quantity of one product before stopping and and switching to a different product.
They also would order and stock an overabundance of inventory so that the right parts were always
on hand. Ohno did not feel that this would not work in a nation that demanded a smaller quantity
but a greater variety to its products. So he came up with an... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

However in Japan low demand meant that manufacturers faced price resistance, so if the selling
price is fixed how can one increase the profit mark up? Obviously by reducing costs and hence a
large focus of the system that Toyota implemented was to do with cost reduction. To aid in cost
reduction Toyota instituted production levelling eliminating unevenness in the flow of items. So
if a component which required assembly had an associated requirement of 100 during a 25 day
working month then 4 were assembled per day, one every two hours in an eight hour working
day. Levelling was also applied to the flow of finished goods out of the factory and to the flow of
raw materials into the factory. Toyota changed their factory layout. Previously all machines of the
same type, e.g. presses, were together in the same area of the factory. This meant that items had to
be transported back and forth as they needed processing on different machines. To eliminate this
transportation different machines were clustered together so items could move smoothly from one
machine to another as they were processed. This meant that workers had to become skilled on more
than one machine previously workers were skilled at operating just one type of machine. Although
this initially met resistance from the workforce it was eventually

Surveillance In 1984 By George Orwell
In George Orwell s 1984 we are introduced to a totalitarian society known as Oceania which is ran
by the political group known as the Party. The Party is able to control every aspect of person s
life by using terror, surveillance, and a repressive bureaucracy to exert total power over the
individual (Kellner, 2). They are able to control their jobs, relationships, and even their minds.
The Party uses carefully constructed tools in order for them to maintain control over the people.
The Party can only maintain control if they are able to control the minds of the people and keep
them in a constant state of confusion and paranoia. The Party does this by using surveillance,
Newspeak, and manipulating the past. One of the tools used by the Party is surveillance. The
people of Oceania are in a constant state of being monitored by the Party through invasive
technology and loyal followers of the Party such as telescreens and children. Michael Yeo states,
Instances of surveillances divide into two main kinds: panoptical and surreptitious (Yeo, 53).
Panoptical surveillance is internalized self supervision or self surveillance. It is the belief that one
is being watch, so one censors themselves from unorthodox thoughts in order to avoid detection.
There was no way to be certain if you were being watched or not. You had to live did live, from
habit that became instinct in assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and except in
darkness, every movement scrutinized

Villanova Research Paper
With two titles in the past three years, the Villanova Wildcats are on their way to becoming a
dynasty. Since the end of John Wooden s UCLA coaching tenure in 1975, only twice has a

Hill, Bobby Hurley, and Christian Laettner, and Florida s 2006 2007 teams of Joakim Noah, Al
Horford, and Corey Brewer, meaning the Wildcats have joined elite company. Once known as a top

shattered that belief.
Villanova has always prided itself on continuity and developing players within their system. In the
era of one and done basketball, where over 200 underclassmen have declared for the NBA Draft in

Roman Twelve Tables
The Roman republic had set a specific set of laws that each person was suppose to abide by.
These set of laws were known as the Twelve Tables. After reading the selections from the Twelve
Tables, I gather that the Roman society was very strict and harsh, and its conception of justice
was more based on punishment than it was on negotiating the situation and coming to a clear
resolution. The Romans were more blunt with their punishments, they saw black and white , no
grey area when making decisions in court, which means that everything was a yes or no, no one
person had the opportunity to talk about any of their crimes, it was straight to punishment, or if
they were found to be not guilty then they were not punished. In Table IV : Rights of Head of
Family, it expresses just how cruel they were, Quickly kill... a dreadfully deformed child
(Spielvogel p. 116). In my opinion, this law is wicked because no one should be killed just
because of the way that they look, especially if they were born that way and can not help it.
Before the Twelve Tables, there were major problems and struggles. Both of the groups, patricians
and plebeians, were able to vote, but only the patricians were granted the right to be elected to
government positions. They were both able to make legal agreements and have marriages, but it
was forbidden for a patricianand a plebeian to intermarry. There was conflict amongst Rome because

Let Gays Marry and Leave Marriage Alone Essay
I will summarize some of the key points from the essay, Let Gays Marry, by Andrew Sullivan, and
the essay, Leave Marriage Alone, by William Bennett. Some of these main points are taken from
mutual beliefs of both authors and others are derived from the opposing opinions of the two.
The first summary of Andrew Sullivan s essay is a reflection of Andrew Sullivan s stance of the
issue. The original essay was in favor of allowing same sex marriage in America. My summary will
dictate some of the arguments that I found to be the most persuasive and important to Sullivan s
case. The second summary is of Bennett s essay, Leave Marriage Alone. I will, again, try to point
out the most influential pieces of argument in the essay.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a basis for these arguments, Sullivan believes that marriage is an important key to the
progression of homosexual equality in America.
Sullivan is aware of certain churches and religious affiliates that would be in opposition to the
marrying of gay couples. Sullivan explains that homosexuals pushing for the permission of gay
marriage do not intend to change the doctrines or traditions of any church. The movement s actual
desire is the fundamental right to marriage.
Sullivan reiterates the hopes of the gay community by expressing their longing for recognition
before the law as a married couple. Gays are essentially making the simple request that they be
given the same marriage license as any other couple in America who wishes to be married.
Advocates of homosexual marriage say they are aiming to strengthen and become a part of the
institution. Bennett disagrees and implores that if they were allowed to follow through, and be
accepted as an active part of the institution of marriage, they would be, in turn, destroying the very
foundations of marriage.
Bennett deems that allowing gays to marry would have a profound influence on society. The
change from the traditional ideals of marriage would completely redefine the conventional
definition of marriage. Simply allowing gays to marry would contradict some of the worlds major
religions that play

Essay On The Undertaker
The Undertaker is without a doubt the single most iconic figure in the history of professional
wrestling. A mixture of talent, time, and sheer dedication to craft and character has pushed him
beyond the ranks of Hulk Hogan and The Rock, and he will surely be remembered as the greatest
of all time whenever he decides to hang up his boots. Mark Calaway, the man behind the Undertaker
character, is an old school guy and has broken character only on rare occasions over the years.
While that s great news for those who believe kayfabe is a lost art, it means fans have not been able
to get close to The Undertaker in the way they have been able to get close to the likes of Shawn
Michaels, The Rock, and Stone Cold Steve Austin, who frequently appear on podcasts and talk
shows to discuss their... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After years of breathtaking bouts inside the ring, The Beast and The Deadman share an immense
level of respect for each other.
5. Triple H
The Undertaker and Triple H have had their problems over the years. Taker did not take kindly to
the infamous Curtain Call when Hunter, along with his fellow Kilq members, broke kayfabe to
have a pseudo emotional moment in the ring with Kevin Nash and Scott Hall, who were leaving
for WCW.
However, several years later, when Triple H was pushed to the main event, he began to win The
Deadman over. The pair had a series of stellar encounters and together they saw their
contemporaries drop off one by one. Eventually, The Undertaker and Triple H were left as the last
of a dying breath and were entrusted with maintaining order in the locker room.
The pair shared a genuine emotional moment after their match at WrestleMania XXVII, with both
men admitting they had their doubts if they could still go inside the ring and thanking the other for
bringing out the best in them.

coming economies, entrepreneurship, and countries with the biggest cultural influence. Moreover,
Japan is one of the most technologically advanced nations with 126 million people which means

The average developed country taxes revenue compared to their gross domestic product are 34%

other countries with higher share of tax revenue to GDP such as Denmark and France. However,
Japan still have a higher tax rate compared to the United States which have a 26% tax revenue

The Importance Of The Past In The Dew Breaker
The past is so vital to the characters of Danticat s novel The Dew Breaker because despite most of
the trauma the characters have undergone in the past, they must keep living with it and tell their
story. One piece of symbolism that is persistent between every chapter are the scars that every
character has. Scars have been a central image of this novel both literally and metaphorically. Each
character has their unique scars that they must carry with them. The story, in the end, talks about
how the scars of the pastare the scars of the future. Every scar is a symbol of the characters painful
history that they had to overcome, and now they must carry their past with themselves forever.
The scars of the past define precisely the importance of the past for every individual character.
The past is a part of all people at all moment. Past scars lie over all of the characters in this novel.
A character like Ka s father is once corrupted by partaking in a violent, dictatorial regime. A
character like Beatrice is haunted by the horrors that impose on her in the past. The past is
inescapable because it is a core part of a person that it largely dictates the reasoning behind their
actions in presentsituations. The past is something which haunts each of the characters in the novel
for different reasons. It left a scar on them that they must forever live with. The past haunts ka s
father as a dew breaker under the authority of a Haitian Dictator. My father never liked

Eating Disorders And Anorexia Nervosa
Eating disorders are a sickness that can come from psychological issues and it can disrupt the
everyday diet. A person with an eating disorder may have started out just eating smaller or larger
amounts of food, but at some point, the urge to eat less or more spiraled out of control. The
common eating disorders are anorexia nervosaand bulimia nervosa. Anorexia nervosa is when
someone see s themselves as an overweight person, so they watch what they eat since, they have
a fear of becoming overweight. The disorder takes over them and their focus is to avoid becoming
overweight. Bulimia nervosa is when someone eats large amounts of food at one time and not
being able to control how much they take in. Researchers are finding that eating disorders are
caused by a complex interaction of genetic, biological, behavioral, psychological, and social factors.
Anorexia nervosa can come from having been sexually abused or having family that are too
controlling over what they do. Most often diagnosed in females (up to 90%), Anorexia is
characterized by failure to maintain body weight of at least 85% of what is expected, fear of
losing control over your weight or of becoming fat. The person with the disorder often visualizes
themselves in a mirror and seeing an overweight person staring back at them which is their
reflection. Treatment for anorexia nervosa involve restoring their health, after that is done therapy
is highly recommended. The therapy can help the person maintain a

Racial Profiling And The American Civil Liberties Union
Racial profiling can hold a variety of meanings. As defined by the American Civil Liberties
Union, however, racial profiling is the discriminatory practice by law enforcement officials of
targeting individuals for suspicion of crime based on the individual s race, ethnicity, religion or
national origin ( Racial Profiling ). Every day, blacks are stopped much more frequently for aimless
searches and minor infractions than their white counterparts. Several African Americans share
experiences like these, such as Roscoe Van Pelt, who was violently snatched off the street and
crammed into a squad car after the ludicrous crimeof jaywalking (Walsh). A more extreme
example would be the case of Sandra Bland, who was brutally beaten following failure to signal a
lane change (Schuppe). Incidents like these occur far too frequently in black communities, all for
the color of their skin. The practices of policecan best be explained in the elaboration of case
probability versus class probability. Case probability is when police take specific evidence with
concrete proof in regards to the victim of a crime to accuse one of a crime. Class probability,
however, is when police generalize normal committers of the specific crime to accuse one for it.
For example, if police aimed to prosecute a seller of marijuana and Hispanics were typically
known to commit such a crime, class probability would be integrated into case investigation if
police searched every Hispanic on site for the

Vertical Datum
A surface or level which is regarded as a base from which other levels can be counted. For
example, sea level is often used as a datum level against which the height of land and depth of the
sea bed are measured. A geodetic datum is an abstract coordinate system with a reference surface
(such as sea level) that serves to provide known locations to begin surveys and create maps. In this
way, datum act similar to starting points when you give someone directions. For instance, when you
want to tell someone how to get to your house, you give them a starting point that they know, like a
crossroads or a building address. Geodesists and surveyors use datum to create starting or reference
points for floodplain maps, property boundaries, construction surveys, levee design, or other work
requiring accurate coordinates that are consistent with one another.... Show more content on

Horizontal datum measure positions (latitude and longitude) on the surface of the Earth, while
vertical datum are used to measure land elevations and water depths. The horizontal datum can be
accessed and used through a collection of specific points on the Earth whose latitude and
longitude have been accurately determined by NOAA s National Geodetic Survey. One
application of the horizontal datum is monitoring the movement of the Earth s crust. This type of
monitoring is often used in places like the San Andreas Fault in California where many
earthquakes occur. The vertical datum is similarly realized through a collection of specific points
on the Earth with known heights either above or below a nationally defined reference surface
(e.g., mean sea level). Geodetic vertical datum are generally used to express land elevations.
However, water level datum are a slightly different vertical datum, and are used as a reference level
to which bathymetric soundings are referenced for nautical charts. Conversion between these two
can be done through geodetic surveys at tide

The Weaknesses Of The Judicial Branch Of Government In The...
The first form of Government in America was the Articles of Confederation, the Articles of
Confederation worked but had a few flaws which included no system of national courts and also
Congress lacked strong and steady leadership. The weakness were quite significant so the
Constitutional Convention was held to revise the Articles of Confederationbut instead led to the
creation of the United StatesConstitution. The Federalist wanted a strong central government but
the Anti Federalists were scared that would be like Britain again so they opted for a small weak
central government; their roles in the Convention were to make The Articles of Confederation
please both parties and make compromises. The Constitutional Convention kept the Government
from being overpowered by creating Checks and Balances, The Executive branch was responsible
for enforcing the laws, Legislative creates the laws, and the Judicial Branch interprets the law. The
Checks were intended to keep one Branch of Government from being more powerful then another
Branch. The smaller and larger states compromised when creating laws by having the Senate and
also the House of Representatives, smaller states like the Senate because this means all states
would have an equal amount of reps but larger states preferred the House of Reps because the
amount of reps was based on population. I believe that in today s Government the Judicial Branch

Centrust Bank Essay
CenTrust Bank Scandal
CenTrust, first called Dade Federal Savings and Loan, was founded in 1934 during the Great
Depression and eventually became a stalwart of the South Florida business establishment. By the
early 1980s, Miami had a corporate community that any city would envy. The companies were
large and growing. They contributed mightily to local causes. They virtually invented a skyline
where none existed as late as the early 1980s. CenTrust Bank and David Paul gave huge sums of
money and much effort toward founding the New World Symphony in the 1980s. But the local
corporate world was shaken badly at that time. In South Florida, home of fragile physical, social
and economic climates, big business became an endangered species. ... Show more content on

Thrifts suffered more than mutual funds, because they were clogged with battered Drexel
underwritten issues.
The episode marks the first time a financial institution has been brought down primarily because
of its involvement in the junk bond market. CenTrust reported a $119.5 million loss for its fiscal
year ended Sept. 30, 1989, after writing down a ton of junk and reserving for losses. Under thrift
rules, CenTrust needs about $130 million of equity capital but currently has an equity shortage of
$283 million.
After all this happen, CenTrust planned to sell most of its branches to raise capital and create a
separate unit to hold its junk until maturity to avoid turning accounting losses on bonds real losses.
Months later, they planned to merge with Hamilton Holding Co., but neither the sale of its branches
nor the merge gotten executed.
CenTrust Bank, the non operational Miami savings and loan that invested heavily in junk bonds,
also invested heavily in political candidates. The thrift s chairman, David Paul, also had dozens of
meetings and meals with politicians, most of them Democrats. The get togethers included a June
1988 lunch with former President Carter and seven meetings with Florida Rep. Bill Nelson, a
member of the Banking Committee.
Just how far CenTrust s fortunes had deteriorated became clear in December 1989, when the
Office of Thrift Supervision slapped a cease and desist order on the thrift, attacking its sloppy
bookkeeping and

  • 2. The Lottery By Shirley Jackson Setting Essay Does a beautiful sunny morning in an average little town sound like a setting fit for a stoning occurring later that day? The setting of a story is very important to the storyline and gives meaning to each element and theme of the story. The setting of The Lottery by Shirley Jackson has extremely significant meaning to the plot of this story. The setting represents elements of irony, tradition, and unity. The mood in the beginning of the story is cheerful and appears to be a normal day. The children are playing, the men are talking about planting and rain, tractors and taxes (Jackson 1). Nothing seems to be abnormal about this particular day. This is a very unusual description of townspeople s activities and conversations knowing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The boys as we find out in the end are involved in a tragic and awful stoning of a fellow townsperson with the help of members in the community. The irony comes from the assumption of innocent play that leads to the killing of an innocent woman. The lottery takes place at the beginning of the summer. The children have recently started their summer vacation and people are getting ready for summer activities. Usually during the summer, time is being spent having fun. People usually are enjoying and celebrating the sun and doing fun activities when the weather is very nice. The irony in this is that the town is doing the complete opposite of these common events. The events this town participates in is the stoning of an innocent person. This is very dark and sad, which is completely opposite of the bright, warm sign that they should be celebrating and enjoying at this time. There was one last ironic element displayed. Irony is found in the fact that the women who was complaining and soon killed in the end was the only women speaking up and making a joke about the lottery before the drawing occurred. The women named Tessie jokingly states: Get up there, Bill (4). When her husband s name was called. She acts as if this whole event is all fun and games, and probably does not think she will pick the paper with the black spot making her the one to be stoned. • 5. The Glass Menagerie Mental Illness Essay Issue #1: Stigma of Mental Illness Both Williams and Gaita employs the stigma against mental illness as a significant issue within both literary texts. Mental illness of the two prominent female characters within separate texts, namely Christine from Romulus my Father, and Laura from The Glass Menagerie is a prominent element in the story as it shapes the interpretation of the audience. The employment of these characters allow the author to shed light to values and attitudes of which the society holds against mental illness, irrespective of the time period. In The Glass Menagerie, Laura s character serves as the victimised manifestation of mental illness. The unfortunate character of Laura Wingfield suffered from anxiety and a limp on the leg . Her anxiety is made extremely evident in Scene 2, whereby Amanda confronted Laura about her absence at Rubicam s Business College: Amanda: Laura, where have you been going when you ve gone out pretending that you were going to business college? • 6. Theories Of The Common Sense Questioning whether or not people make choices seems to be an arbitrary concept to ponder. Common sense causes one to believe that, of course, humans make choices daily. Even now, common sense dictates that it is a choice to read this paper or even for this paper to be written at all. However, according to one form of early philosophy, common sense has led society astray. Each event that occurs throughout the universe has causation such that one never acts of his or her own free will. This theory of the absence of free will, known as hard determinism, has three main premises as its basis. The first premise states that no event is uncaused (Kleinman 64). This appeals to humanity s practicality; for every force, there is an equal and opposite force. One reaps what he or she sows. What goes around, comes around. This form of logic demonstrated in the first premise satisfies society s intrinsic desire for predictability and reason. The second premise then states that if an event is caused, it must occur; likewise, if it must occur, no other outcome could be achieved. Thus, if every event s outcome is predetermined through causation, no man can act against it; this tenet makes up the third and final premise (Kleinman 64). Therefore, based upon these three premises, no man holds the power of free will. As can be imagined, hard determinism appears to have a few holes in its validity as a theory. A person, for instance, consciously makes choices each day, such as choices of diet ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is because that they are not eating at traditional meal times, and eat junk food or other snacks that are quick and convenient (Aanonsen 58). Caffeine, the shiftworker s constant companion, and changing meal times from one day to the next may affect gastric secretions, aggravating digestive problems. The History Of Animals Being Domesticated The history of animals being domesticated starts as far back as 20,000 years ago, when large mammals such as bison roamed the tundra of Europe and Asia. They were hunted widely by two groups of hunters, both smaller and weaker than the bison, but both had sufficient developed social systems to allow them to hunt and kill in packs. These two hunters were the humans and the wolves. These two groups of hunters are surprisingly similar. Both are family based and led by a dominant male whose female partner has authority second to his. All of the members are friendly towards each other, but extremely suspicious of outsiders. All members are also protective of any newborn and young in the pack, and both are good at interpreting the moods of others, by facial expression or other forms of body language. Though humans and wolves started out competing for the same prey, but soon realized the advantages for both of them in teaming up. On the side of the wolves, human ingenuity and the use of weapons mean a share in a greater number of kill, and maybe a taste of bigger pretty they couldn t take down alone, such as mammoths. On the side of humans, the speed of the wolves and ferocity is equivalent to a new weapon altogether. The partnership between the two is natural. • 11. Funding Recreational Areas Into The Scholarship Beyond conservation then, lies the sense that historians have frequently neglected to incorporate how preservation of specific recreational areas into their scholarship. This is vital considering that without this frame of reference, conservation is lost within the idea that it is separate from nature. As an attempt to explain this neglect is the awareness that One group of critics has suggested that the complexity and stochasticity of natural processes invariably complicate attempts to preserve wilderness, creating an additional layer suggestive of the thought that scholars shy away from integrating specific instances of land use in their studies. As Paul Sutter suggests, past historians have frequently and inadvertently written about conservation, especially in the case of wilderness, as a form of enclosure. In doing so, Sutter s work correlates with Jacoby s considering that conservation has been viewed as a worthwhile endeavor, while neglecting to comprehend the ramifications it had on certain groups. Perhaps most interesting in Sutter s argument, is the traditional method of examining conservation as a part of the Progressive Movement, leading historians to consider that nature is simply a human paradigm, and that the ties between nature and humans are not as significant as they appear. Paramount to Sutter s argument is his association between conservation and Benton MacKaye. The author frequently uses MacKaye to illustrate public/private partnerships as have other ... There are three parts to this section. Initially, all the furniture and fixtures (toilet, sinks not attached to walls) need to be removed. Depending on the quantity/size of furniture/fixtures that need to be removed, contractors will typically charge between $15 and $50 per hour. Customers can cut out this cost if they agree to have the items removed prior to the contractor arriving. However, if it is agreed upon and the items are not removed, the contractor will usually charge 150% of the normal rate, because this will add additional time to the job, causing him to possibly run behind schedule for another job, and he schedules jobs based on time estimates. The next part is the removal and disposal of the existing floor. The price for this can range from $25 to $75 per hour, based on the type of flooring being removed. Carpet and vinyl are easy to remove, thus would be on the low end. Tile is more difficult because mortar is used to install it and all of that has to be broken up and removed. Again, the customer can save during this phase if they do the removal themselves, with the same penalty if not removed prior to the contractor arrival. The final part of this phase is repairing the subfloor. Costs for this repair vary greatly on what needs to be repaired, and are usually ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Analysis Of The Road Not Taken The Road Not Taken is one of the simplest poems written by Robert Frost. It has 4 stanzas, with 5 lines each. The poem presents a crossroads at which the author finds himself. He concludes that both roads are the same, with the same amount of fallen and untouched leaves. He, however, chooses one because it seems better to him. He then proceeds on this path, telling himself he might one day come back to the other. The reality is the opposite, unfortunately. He never does. The most attractive feature of this poem is the fact that it is relatable to everyone. It represents a conundrum of choice that is present in every stage of an individual s life. The poem is filled with a lot of depth and underlying meaning while at the same time having the right form and composition. The Road Not Taken is constantly misconstrued. Many read it and misinterpret the words and general meaning of the poem. This literary work is about what one does with their life, how hard a decision is, and how important it is in determining success and happiness. The poet acknowledges that the different paths are actually similar, as described in the first line of the second stanza where the author states that they are just as fair (Frost 6), which mirrors real life where people assume the grass is always greener. Frost further alludes to this idea by stating in the first line of the third stanza, both that morning equally lay (Frost 11). He acknowledges that he might never come back again to the first path even though he hopes to. In the fifth line of the fourth stanza, Frost admits that though he might want to come back to the path one day, he knows he never will. He goes on to declare that he shall be saying it with a sigh (Frost 16). Interestingly, he ends the short poem by stating that he took the road less traveled by and it made all the difference (Frost 19 20). Consequently, this conclusion creates confusion in the mind of the reader. Was the road less traveled, or were the two roads the same? It seems that at different points of his life, the author realizes different aspects of the two roads. The Road Not Taken is the title of the poem. The subject gives the road used significance as opposed to the one Frost did not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. Cases of Overcoming Hardship Hardship is something everyone must overcome at some point in their lives. Everyone deals with hardships differently. It is harder for some people to recover from hardship because of their family, friends, or even because they can t find the will within themselves to deal with hardships. It would be easier for someone who is naturally determined and strong willed to overcome things because they have a inbred ability to conquer their fears and leave behind whatever it was that was making their life unbearable. If parents don t support their kids decisions, such as Jeannette going to New York, then that can make it harder to triumph over things they struggle with. If friends don t encourage someone to go on and make something better of themselves, they will hold them back and they will be stuck in the life everyone expects them to live. Many parents support their children to learn from their mistakes and make better choices than what they made when they were a kid and even now. Friends can be a huge part in trying to get over things that they are struggling from. With the right support and help from them it makes it that much easier to overcome hardships. The person struggling must find it within themselves to be a better person each day. Not everyone has the same chance of recovery, but that doesn t mean that they can t do it. They may just have to worker harder, but that means the reward will be that much better. Jeannette started from the bottom, in a small town with an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Actually this type of inventory/production was originally known as the Toyota Production System . A man by the name of Taiichi Ohno is credited as the person who first came up with this system. He looked at the Western industries and found that the manufacturers would set up their manufacturing lines to produce a large quantity of one product before stopping and and switching to a different product. They also would order and stock an overabundance of inventory so that the right parts were always on hand. Ohno did not feel that this would not work in a nation that demanded a smaller quantity but a greater variety to its products. So he came up with an... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However in Japan low demand meant that manufacturers faced price resistance, so if the selling price is fixed how can one increase the profit mark up? Obviously by reducing costs and hence a large focus of the system that Toyota implemented was to do with cost reduction. To aid in cost reduction Toyota instituted production levelling eliminating unevenness in the flow of items. So if a component which required assembly had an associated requirement of 100 during a 25 day working month then 4 were assembled per day, one every two hours in an eight hour working day. Levelling was also applied to the flow of finished goods out of the factory and to the flow of raw materials into the factory. Toyota changed their factory layout. Previously all machines of the same type, e.g. presses, were together in the same area of the factory. This meant that items had to be transported back and forth as they needed processing on different machines. To eliminate this transportation different machines were clustered together so items could move smoothly from one machine to another as they were processed. This meant that workers had to become skilled on more than one machine previously workers were skilled at operating just one type of machine. Although this initially met resistance from the workforce it was eventually ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Surveillance In 1984 By George Orwell In George Orwell s 1984 we are introduced to a totalitarian society known as Oceania which is ran by the political group known as the Party. The Party is able to control every aspect of person s life by using terror, surveillance, and a repressive bureaucracy to exert total power over the individual (Kellner, 2). They are able to control their jobs, relationships, and even their minds. The Party uses carefully constructed tools in order for them to maintain control over the people. The Party can only maintain control if they are able to control the minds of the people and keep them in a constant state of confusion and paranoia. The Party does this by using surveillance, Newspeak, and manipulating the past. One of the tools used by the Party is surveillance. The people of Oceania are in a constant state of being monitored by the Party through invasive technology and loyal followers of the Party such as telescreens and children. Michael Yeo states, Instances of surveillances divide into two main kinds: panoptical and surreptitious (Yeo, 53). Panoptical surveillance is internalized self supervision or self surveillance. It is the belief that one is being watch, so one censors themselves from unorthodox thoughts in order to avoid detection. There was no way to be certain if you were being watched or not. Since the end of John Wooden s UCLA coaching tenure in 1975, only twice has a school won two times in the span of three years. These were Duke s early 90 s teams of Grant Hill, Bobby Hurley, and Christian Laettner, and Florida s 2006 2007 teams of Joakim Noah, Al Horford, and Corey Brewer, meaning the Wildcats have joined elite company. Once known as a top team during the regular season who would flame out in March, Jay Wright s most recent teams have shattered that belief. Villanova has always prided itself on continuity and developing players within their system. In the era of one and done basketball, where over 200 underclassmen have declared for the NBA Draft in the last five years, Villanova has been largely immune. • 37. Roman Twelve Tables The Roman republic had set a specific set of laws that each person was suppose to abide by. These set of laws were known as the Twelve Tables. After reading the selections from the Twelve Tables, I gather that the Roman society was very strict and harsh, and its conception of justice was more based on punishment than it was on negotiating the situation and coming to a clear resolution. The Romans were more blunt with their punishments, they saw black and white , no grey area when making decisions in court, which means that everything was a yes or no, no one person had the opportunity to talk about any of their crimes, it was straight to punishment, or if they were found to be not guilty then they were not punished. In Table IV : Rights of Head of Family, it expresses just how cruel they were, Quickly kill... a dreadfully deformed child (Spielvogel p. 116). In my opinion, this law is wicked because no one should be killed just because of the way that they look, especially if they were born that way and can not help it. Both of the groups, patricians and plebeians, were able to vote, but only the patricians were granted the right to be elected to government positions. The first summary of Andrew Sullivan s essay is a reflection of Andrew Sullivan s stance of the issue. The original essay was in favor of allowing same sex marriage in America. As a basis for these arguments, Sullivan believes that marriage is an important key to the progression of homosexual equality in America. Sullivan is aware of certain churches and religious affiliates that would be in opposition to the marrying of gay couples. Sullivan explains that homosexuals pushing for the permission of gay marriage do not intend to change the doctrines or traditions of any church. The movement s actual desire is the fundamental right to marriage. Sullivan reiterates the hopes of the gay community by expressing their longing for recognition before the law as a married couple. Gays are essentially making the simple request that they be given the same marriage license as any other couple in America who wishes to be married. Advocates of homosexual marriage say they are aiming to strengthen and become a part of the institution. Bennett disagrees and implores that if they were allowed to follow through, and be accepted as an active part of the institution of marriage, they would be, in turn, destroying the very foundations of marriage. Bennett deems that allowing gays to marry would have a profound influence on society. The change from the traditional ideals of marriage would completely redefine the conventional definition of marriage. The Importance Of The Past In The Dew Breaker The past is so vital to the characters of Danticat s novel The Dew Breaker because despite most of the trauma the characters have undergone in the past, they must keep living with it and tell their story. • 46. Racial Profiling And The American Civil Liberties Union Racial profiling can hold a variety of meanings. As defined by the American Civil Liberties Union, however, racial profiling is the discriminatory practice by law enforcement officials of targeting individuals for suspicion of crime based on the individual s race, ethnicity, religion or national origin ( Racial Profiling ). Every day, blacks are stopped much more frequently for aimless searches and minor infractions than their white counterparts. Several African Americans share experiences like these, such as Roscoe Van Pelt, who was violently snatched off the street and crammed into a squad car after the ludicrous crimeof jaywalking (Walsh). A more extreme example would be the case of Sandra Bland, who was brutally beaten following failure to signal a lane change (Schuppe). Incidents like these occur far too frequently in black communities, all for the color of their skin. The practices of policecan best be explained in the elaboration of case probability versus class probability. Case probability is when police take specific evidence with concrete proof in regards to the victim of a crime to accuse one of a crime. Class probability, however, is when police generalize normal committers of the specific crime to accuse one for it. For example, if police aimed to prosecute a seller of marijuana and Hispanics were typically known to commit such a crime, class probability would be integrated into case investigation if police searched every Hispanic on site for the ... For example, sea level is often used as a datum level against which the height of land and depth of the sea bed are measured. In this way, datum act similar to starting points when you give someone directions. For instance, when you want to tell someone how to get to your house, you give them a starting point that they know, like a crossroads or a building address. Geodesists and surveyors use datum to create starting or reference points for floodplain maps, property boundaries, construction surveys, levee design, or other work requiring accurate coordinates that are consistent with one another.... Horizontal datum measure positions (latitude and longitude) on the surface of the Earth, while vertical datum are used to measure land elevations and water depths. One application of the horizontal datum is monitoring the movement of the Earth s crust. This type of monitoring is often used in places like the San Andreas Fault in California where many earthquakes occur. The vertical datum is similarly realized through a collection of specific points on the Earth with known heights either above or below a nationally defined reference surface (e.g., mean sea level). Geodetic vertical datum are generally used to express land elevations. However, water level datum are a slightly different vertical datum, and are used as a reference level to which bathymetric soundings are referenced for nautical charts. The Constitutional Convention kept the Government from being overpowered by creating Checks and Balances, The Executive branch was responsible for enforcing the laws, Legislative creates the laws, and the Judicial Branch interprets the law. The Checks were intended to keep one Branch of Government from being more powerful then another Branch. The smaller and larger states compromised when creating laws by having the Senate and also the House of Representatives, smaller states like the Senate because this means all states would have an equal amount of reps but larger states preferred the House of Reps because the amount of reps was based on population.
