The Role Of Marriage In The Kreutzer Sonata By Leo Tolstoy
The novella The Kreutzer Sonata, written by Leo Tolstoy, discusses the issues of gender inequality and
socio economic status through jealousy and rage over the portrayed relationship of marriage. Tolstoy
also explores the themes of how the female gender is portrayed through marriage in the novella during
the 1880s through the main protagonist Pozdnyshev and his wife. Pozdnyshev s attitude towards his
wife and the opposite gender is deleterious. His wife is his object of desire, Lacan s term for a
narcissistic want, persisting she only belongs to him. Because of Pozdnyshev s ideals about gender, his
jealousy gets the best of him when Troukhatchevsky, the violinist that accompanies his wife while
playing the piano to Beethoven s Kreutzer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She hires a music teacher named Troukhatchevsky where he would play the violin, and she would play
the piano to Beethoven s Kreutzer Sonata occupying her time. Pozdnyshev then starts to think and
believe that the both of them playing music together is an excellent excuse to cover passionate love.
His jealousy consumes his every thought throughout the novella, making it difficult for him to see
reality.
One day, he comes home and sees an overcoat that belongs to Troukhatchevsky hanging by the
doorway. Suddenly, a jealous rampage overcomes him after hearing laughter coming out from the
room. He takes down a dagger and starts treading towards the room. Once he enters the room,
Pozdnyshev raises the dagger and throws himself upon his wife, stabbing her near her heart. Once
Troukhatchevsky realizes what is happening, he quickly runs off before Pozdnyshev can touch him.
Overall, the novella was one of the most interesting stories I have read, and I enjoyed every page. The
narration that Tolstoy portrays works well with the situation and highlights Pozdnyshev s psychotic
rambling thoughts. Tolstoy creates the passengers on the train to portray his readers, as we are sitting
in place with them and hearing the outrageous story for the first time. By having that aspect, I felt that
I was the unnamed passenger hearing a story from a psychotic narrator. This not only helped me delve
into the story but understand the ending and why Tolstoy included the train scene. I could

The Lasting Implications of the Watergate Scandal
I. Introduction
I am not a crook is one of the most famous quotes from President Richard M. Nixon. Citizens of the
United States of America would hope that their president would never have to defend himself as a
crook, but that is just what happened in the presidency of Richard M. Nixon. President Nixon had to
defend himself for not being a crook because of the events famously known as the Watergate Scandal .
In 1972, members of Nixon s re election committee broke into the Democratic National Committee s
Watergate offices and stole top secret documents as well as trying to get into their phone system. They
eventually were caught and so was President Nixon which led him to his resignation. Even though it
was an unfortunate event, there have been positive outcomes because of it. The lasting implications of
the Watergate Scandal have been generally positive on society because of the passing of Ethics in
Government Act, amending the Freedom of Information Act and 42 states passing election reform
laws.
II. Background
Richard M. Nixon was a former vice president who barely won the election in 1968 against Hubert
Humphrey for the Republican party. Once in his presidency, President Nixon pleased and displeased
citizens in the United States. He was not necessarily the most liked president, but he was not the most
disliked either. By 1972, it was time for the

High School Goals
Goals are important to peoples everyday lives. Goals for high school, personal life, goals for your job,
and goals for the future are important to our everyday lives towards the future. I m Hailey Anderson, I
m a determined person that is not afraid to fail and then learn from it. My goals in my life is to focus
on my education, improving my bowling skills, and find different ways to strengthen my short term
memory loss. Goals in high school are good because you can focus on making goals, which can let
you get to what you want to do in the future. My personal goal for high school is to get a 3.0 GPA, or
higher and graduate high school. A GPA is good for individual student or a person that graduated high
school to know. This will help businesses know what type of person they will be in that line of work.
A GPA also determines if a person is ready to graduated high school and if a person is ready to go to
college. The reason why I m so focused on my education for high school is because that way I can
achieve a goal or goals that gets me closer to what I want to do in my life. Goals in high school are so
you can set yourself up for success in the future. My goals for college is to get a scholarship or a

higher chance to have a one on one with the teacher. I feel like a private college would benefit helping
me in with my short term memory depending on what college I attend. If I plan out what college I go
to that would give me different goals for when I m in college and will help prepare me for my career

The Effects of Fire and Flooding
To Tree Islands in the Florida Everglades
The topic of this research paper will be the tree island communities in the Florida Everglades and the
different conditions that affect them. While conducting preliminary research on the topic, my
hypothesis is that the effect of flooding shortly after a fire will have a positive effect on the tree
islands. I believe that the flooding will bring in other resources that have been carried with the current
and provide the community with enough resources for healthy growth following the fire. I believe the
communities could benefit from have a source of water, instead of having more droughts after the fire.
In the Everglades these patches of trees or islands of them are an essential piece of the landscape.
These islands of trees are seen in both the short and the long hydro period wetland of the Everglades.
What these islands start to do is provide a web of shade and they gives opportunity for these forest
dwelling plants and animals to perform important biodiversity and nutrient cycling functions (Gained
et al. 2002, Ross 2009). Tree islands can be all different sizes, in the short hydro period area these
sizes can vary from anything of two to three trees to as big as several hectares with hundreds of trees.
The size of these tree islands have a direct effect on the amount of species there are, the larger the tree
island the more chance there is to have more

Similarities Between Elizabeth Bay House And Alexander...
Elizabeth Bay house that was built between 1835 and 1839 as the home of Alexander Macleay became

How Do Family And Personal Issues Affect Leadership...
For leaders to perform his or her duties at an optimum level, there has to be a balance of peace at
home. So what happens when the family and personal life is out of balance? Can it be linked to
unethical behaviors at the workplace in leaders? Personal and family stresses can have an effect on
leadership decision and critical thinking. If leadership or employees are dealing with family and
personal issues outside of work, it can be difficult to manage workplace problems in sound and
efficient manner. So how do family and personal issues affect leadership performance? Physiologists
have referred personal and family matters to the clinical term Family to work conflict (FWC) . Family

A good leader must have a sense of control to self identify when those stresses may be influencing
leadership performance and make an immediate correction to maintain personal and work
cohesiveness. Leaders are responsible for making swift action and decisions that can affect the overall
organizational goal achievement (Joosten, van Dijke, Van Hiel De Cremer, 2014). This information
does not suggest avoiding stress would cure all; instead suggest self control can limit the stress level to
a managerial control, allowing leaders to perform at optimum efficiency which will lower the
possibility of leader acting in an unethical manner. This type of stress can be managed and dealt with
accordingly. What about those unforeseen stressors that may affect leadership?
Job stressor along with personal and family issues can in most cases be foreseen. What about those
issues that cannot be foreseen? In life, there are some unforeseen situations that may occur that are
clearly out of the control of a leader. Leaders and staff members must understand issue can happen at
any moment. It can range from personal to job related unforeseen issues. What is important to know is
when those incidents do occur leader must ready to display an ethical resilience to uphold the respect
and trust of its team and there. However when an unforeseen event occurs, and unethical behavior is
shown as a result of it,

The Blue Ringed Octopuss
The common name for this brilliant marine invertebrate is the Blue ringed octopus. It also has a
scientific name Hapalochlaena Lunulata. In Latin that means, Soft skinned thing with little moons .
This octopus belongs to the phylum Mollusca, class Cephalopoda, genus Hapalochlaena, family
Octopodidae, kingdom Animalia and order Octopoda. With at least 50,000 living species, the phylum
Mollusca is one the most diverse groups of animals. This octopus is in a class that also includes squid,
cuttlefish and nautilus. The blue ringed octopus is normally a light brown to dark yellow color but the
color changes to glowing yellow brown with shimmering blue rings when it s disturbed. It has eight
powerful tentacles that can grow to about 10cm long and that encircle the head. They only weigh up to
28 grams and their body gets to 5cm, being the size of a golf ball. They have well established eyes
with an image forming lens and large retina but their vision is known to only be black and white.
Being soft bodied the only hard part of the octopus is the beak. Their brain is centered about their
oesophagus and is shaped like a donut. These octopuses have poison glands that discharge two
different types of poison; one they use for catching food, which is the more mild type, and then there s
the type they use for defense, the more poisonous type. The Blue ringed octopus can move several
different ways. One way is by drawing water into a cavity in its body, and then dismissing the jet of

In mid September 2005, Ashley Swenson, the chief financial officer (CFO) of a large computer aided
design and computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) equipment manufacturer needed to decide
whether to pay out dividends to the firm s shareholders, or to repurchase stock. If Swenson chose to

question is whether the firm should embark on a campaign of corporate image advertising, and change
its corporate name to reflect its new outlook. The case serves as an omnibus review of the many

(Or alternatively, Why pay any dividends?) How will Gainesboro s various providers of capital, such
as its stockholders and bankers, react to a declaration of no dividend? What about the announcement
of a 40% payout? How would they react to a residual payout?
The instructor needs to elicit from the students the notions that the dividend payout announcement
may affect stock price and that at least some stockholders prefer dividends. Students should also
mention the signaling and clientele considerations.
4. What risks does the firm face?
Discussion following this question should address the nature of the industry, the strategy of the firm,
and the firm s performance. This discussion will lay the groundwork for the review of strategic
considerations that bears on the dividend decision.
5. What is the nature of the share repurchase decision that Swenson must make? How would this
affect the dividend decision?
The discussion here must present the repercussions of a share repurchase decision on the share price,
as well as on the dividend question. Signaling and clientele considerations must also be considered.
6. Does the stock market appear to reward high dividend payout? What about low dividend payout?
Does it matter what type of investor owns the shares? What is the impact on share price of dividend
policy?
The data can be interpreted to support either view. The point is to show that simple extrapolations
from stock market data are untrustworthy,

Gymnastics Research Paper
In gymnastics math plays a crucial role in tricks and stunts. If a gymnast does not have enough power
to complete a trick at the right angle the trick will not be safely completed. There is also math in how
gymnastics are judged and how skills are rated. There are five different values of grading a skill, the
skills are A, B, C, D, E and F. For each skill level the difficulty point increases by one tenth. The goal
of a gymnast is to get a perfect score of ten (Isport, rules and regulations). In gymnastics, there are
four apparatuses; for women s there are floor, beam, bars and vault and for men there are floor,
pommel horse, rings, and parallel bars and horizontal bar. All the different events are judged on what
is required for the level of the gymnast. For each level, there is more tricks and stunts that need to be
incorporated into a routine. The floor is twelve by twelve meters, or 39.97 feet. The area of the floor

1972, the year the first home video game system, named Odyssey, is released by Magnavox. This

game by the name of Pong is a success in the public. It is because people wanted to play Pong in the
comfort of their own homes, that they bought Odyssey. The system only sold around 100,000 units
since Magnavox only sold the game system from their own stores, making consumers believe that the
game system would only work on Magnavox TV sets.

In the same year, Atari pushes out a new product, Battlezone, which features a three dimensional first
person view. Battlezone puts players in the seat of a tank as it roams around destroying other tanks.
This greatly interested the US Military, as they asked Atari to develop a more advanced version of
Battlezone to for Military training. We also see the debut of Pac Man in the arcades; Pac Man soon
becomes one of the most popular games to date.
In 1981, after many failures to produce a hit title, Nintendo of Japan s Shigeru Miyamoto creates
Donkey Kong, a game featuring a plumber named Jumpman, on a mission to save his girlfriend from
the crazed ape, Donkey Kong. Jumpman was later renamed Mario by Nintendo of America. It is also
in this year that US video game arcade hits its highest ever revenue to date, five billion US Dollars.
From 1982 to 1984, it was a dark time for the video game industry, as companies started mass
producing and saturated the market with games. This is most evident in Atari, who released titles that
had more units than the number of Atari 2600 owned by consumers. Due to bad sales, many
developers go out of business. The games developed by these out of business companies were
discounted heavily, causing still in business companies high losses. Things take a turn for the worse as
Atari executive Ray Kassar resign after insider trading. Due to this chaos, a lucrative plan between

The Death Of Jean Pierre Grumbach
Born in Paris in the middle of World War I, Jean Pierre Grumbach knew he wanted to be a filmmaker
at a very early age. After receiving a Pathé Baby camera at the age of seven, he went on to create the
equivalent of thirty short movies in various formats for friends and family by the time he turned
twenty. His burgeoning career and dreams of being a film director were interrupted by Nazi Germany
and the Second World War, but instead of evacuating to the United Kingdom he stayed in his
homeland and fought, wisely changing his last name to Melville after his favorite author. Now a
veteran of the Resistance in Nazi occupied France, Jean Pierre Melville later used his love of
filmmaking and American gangster movies, accompanied by his disdain for the domineering French
cinema establishment, to invent an entire genre of films and inspire an army of young directors to
ignore conventional methods and embrace their own creations in their own unique ways.
THE ACCIDENTAL ICON
From the beginning, Melville caught the attention of audiences and critics with his hardboiled crime
noir films both in terms of storytelling and filming techniques. So much so that writers coined a term
for his films and those soon to follow by others directors as the French New
Wave, and Melville was the Godfather. Part of Melville s motivation for this new style was his intense
dissatisfaction with the imperious demands of the Director s Guild as he personally defined the French
New Wave as an

Architectural Reuse
C. Architectural Reuse
People are happiest in buildings where change occurs at every scale from weeks to centuries. Such
buildings are fractals in time. Stewart Brand
Architectural reuse processes include adaptive reuse, conservative disassembly, and reusing salvaged
materials. This definition is broad and inclusive permitting many different interpretations; however,
the underlying objective is that architectural reuse be understood as an evolutionary process occurring
over time.

Adaptive reuse should always be investigated, because it is the highest form of recovery. Adaptive
reuse revises the function of a building while preserving the integrity of architectural space. In order
for a building to accommodate change, it must have a functional value as well as a commodity value.
Buildings that offer an open arrangement of spaces and a flexible structural framework have the best
potential for reuse. In Ecologic Architecture, Richard Crowther says, Our tendency to fixed state space
planning is counter to our own dynamic of thinking, articulation, and mobility. 3 We have adopted this
approach for the purpose of protecting the public s health and safety. The Uniform Building Code
(UBC) requires buildings to follow a set of rules with respect to their occupancy and construction
type. While establishing fixed uses helps simplify the regulatory process, the specificity of functions
has gotten out of hand. The 1994 UBC outlines a total of 32 separate occupancies, each of which
contains numerous sub sections. The subsequent hard separations and compartmentalization limits the
capability of a building to adapt to future needs. Open plans and partitioning that is easily recyclable
or biodegradable, such as Stramit straw panels, allow for greater versatility.

Essay on Should the 22nd Admendment be Repealed
In the political world today there are so many different opinions about several different topics. The
topics that I will address to you will be, should the 22nd Amendment be repealed and also should the
foreign born be allowed to run for president. In both topics you may have your pros and cons, but I am
strongly against the both of them because I feel that the Constitution should not be taken advantage of.
Government should not be allowed to manipulate the Constitution to suit his or her needs. While

American people are use to being able to vote for a new president especially if the one that is in office
is not doing a good job for the people. I like the way it is because when we limit it to only two terms it
helps bring in qualified people with new views and that may have a different outlook on how things
are being handled in the White House. Conflict will arise either way you choose to go and personally I
think that if it isn t broke why try to fix it. We as voters enjoy exercising our right to vote, but I
strongly feel that the government has the right to put who it wants in office no matter what. So,
presidents having limits on how long they can run is our savior because sometimes you can vote and
vote and your voice remain unheard.
In addition to the 22nd amendment being repealed, there have been several talks about also allowing

Senior Year
It was beautiful. I had a few weeks left of school, then I was off to summer before leaving home to go
to college at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. I rolled into school at 7:45 rocking out to Club
Mix 96 cassette tape in my 1999 Nissan Sentra. I was instructed to park my car behind the school near
the track and football field. This was a customary event once a year during the rummage sale days, the
students cleared out and crated a maze of cars from the windows of the cafeteria. Walking into school,
I had no idea about what events would eventually transpire. I went through classes, talked to friends,
and enjoyed being a senior in a school that all the seniors thought they ran . After school, I was out on
the baseball field playing a rival team. It was a fantastic game and more importantly a win. A
celebration and shower brought my best two friends and I out to our cars with nobody else around.
Then it hit me.
I turned to my friends Sam and Jacob and I told them that I felt good. I felt like celebrating, we all
played well, we all got a win, and we were in a unique position. It was perfect and it was so simple. I
ll never forget what I said.

The Water Landslide Research Paper
The Water Slide Slip Have you ever made a bad decision? Chances are, YOU HAVE! Maybe spilled
something on the floor and not cleaned it up, or deciding to kick your cousin in the face for not
leaving the elevator... Anyway, my decision in this story has nothing to do with the second one. But it
is a VERY BAD CHOICE, with a VERY, VERY BAD consequence! It is the time when I left my spilt
water on the floor, and my uncle suffered! Uh oh..... It was getting late, the sky was dimming, and the
fridge and blender were calling my name! That s right, SNACK TIME!!! I ran out of my room,
through the hall, and took a sharp right turn into the kitchen! As fast as lighting I grabbed my vitamin
water out of the fridge, grabbed a cup filled with ice, and tossed

Argument On Miracles Are Impossible
There is another argument against miracles, which has less to do with empirics and more to do with
philosophy, namely the claim that miracles are impossible. No matter what I have accounted for above
and no matter what we experience in life, there is no need to believe in miracles since they cannot
happen, according to this view. It became popular during the so called enlightenment in the 18th
century minority world, and its main proponents were pantheists like Voltaire and deists like Thomas
Jefferson, who used theological arguments for their naturalism. From the pantheistic perspective,
nature is god and so god cannot break natural laws because then he would break his own backbone.
From a deistic perspective, god simply stopped intervening in his creation after he created it, and so
miracles are impossible because god never wants to perform them (Jefferson even took a Bible and cut
out all Jesus miracles with a pair of scissors to prove his point).
Neither pantheism nor deism provide any substantial argument for these claims, but in the 19th
century an atheist philosopher called David Hume, developed an argument against the probability of
miracles that became popular. Hume did not argue that miracles are impossible, since that s as
unprovable as claiming that God doesn t exist, but he thought that they are highly improbable to the
extent that one should never believe a miracle report.
Hume wrote that since common human experience is that dead men remain dead, for

The Effect Of Conditioned Response On Hr Student s Name...
Effect of Conditioned Response on HR Student s name Institution Abstract This report is based on an
experiment to investigate the effect t of a tone conditioned stimuli to heart rate. The study used 56
participants mean age 24.20 years where 15 were male and 41 were female. The study was purely
experimental where the participants were subjected to a specified tone either at rest or when hopping
and then were asked to count their heart beat rate using the palpation method. The experiment took
place in three phases pre test, training and the post test. Heart rates results for each participant was
recorded in each phase and the mean heart rate was calculated for the pre test and post test. Results
indicated higher mean rates and standard deviation for post test in comparison to the pre test. A sample
t test was also carried out for pre test vs post test mean hear rate measurements. Analysis of the results
showed that tone conditioned stimuli led to increased heart rates. Effect of Conditioned Response on
HR A conditioned stimulus in classical conditioning can be defined as a learned response in relation to
a previously neutral stimulus (Domjan, Grau, amp; Krause, 2010). It is a learned reflexive response
that is evoked when one is exposed to the same response (Schreurs, Smith Bell, amp; Burhans, 2011).
While there has been an increasing acute awareness in relation to the interactions of heart rate with
conditioned responses, can heart rates really be altered through

The space race was the event the began the interest in space exploration. It all started in 1957 during

Battle Of Monte Cassaino Essay
Battle of Monte Cassino
The Battle of Monte Cassino was one of the most important battles of World War 2. Monte Cassino
was effectively blocking the Allies route north to Rome and had to be taken despite the many
difficulties of doing so with many numerous mountains surrounding Cassino. The Allies reached the
western end of the German Gustav Line in Italy in mid Jan 1943. The main German positions
generally ran along the valleys created by the Rapido River, Liri River and the Garigliano River.
German troops established positions on the hill of Monte Cassino, which dominated over the valleys,
but they had stayed out of the nearby historical Benedictine monastery per orders of Field Marshal
Albert Kesselring. The allies Field Artillery played a very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this paper, we will be studying the culture of the people of Monte Cassino where the battle of the
Cassino took place. A study conducted by Forty, George (2004) showed that Multinational forces
conducted this battle with the intention of dislodging the German troops that had been well entrenched
in the Italian mountain and also to clear their path to Rome. In 1943 after Sicily s conquest the allies
were faced with difficulties battling up the spine towards Rome. The Germans had gained more
ground thus, they were able to block the allied forces from advancing. The Germans, however, ordered
his troops not to include the abbey in their defensive system. By 1944 the allied progress was
embarrassingly and painfully slow thus causing tension among the allies. The reason for the slow pace
was the geography and the terrain south of Rome. It has steep high mountains with very fast flowing
rivers that cut through. The only possible route to Rome was route seven the Appian Way or route six
which was via Casilina which had been built in the 12th century. The Appian Way followed the west
coast, but unfortunately, in the south of Rome,

Male Utopian And Dystopias
As Bammer explains, while male utopian writers are mainly interested in broadening their influence
and power and exploring other worlds, women s utopias aim to change their current situation by
reconstructing the power relations that affect their lives. She states that these fantasies are much more
achievable in theory and much more urgent than men s. However, women had no reason to turn to
such a male dominated genre while they had genres more suitable for delving into the private sphere
and its more realistic utopian possibilities (Bammer, 2004).
Bammer points out that although men s utopian fantasies take different approaches compared to
women s, women are far from absent in men s utopia. In fact, women seem to have a central role in

Dystopian fiction is engaged with the argument between the desire of the individual and the societal
demand, emphasizing the sexuality and relations among the genders as parts of this conflict (Brooker
1994, 337). Brooker states that the governments of dystopian societies in books such as We, Brave
New World or Nineteen Eighty Four all use sexuality as the primary tool to control society. Brooker
also points out that despite this consistent focus on sexuality in dystopian fiction, the major works of
the genre have done relatively little to challenge conventional notions of gender roles . Although there
is considerable emphasis on sexuality in dystopian fiction, Brooker argues that conventional notions
of gender roles remain unchallenged in major works of the genre. He observes that even though these
literary dystopias and utopias stress the importance of gender equality, they remain places where men
are men and women are women, and in relatively conventional ways . Brooker brings up More s
Utopia as an example of this trend. In Utopia, women and men are proclaimed completely equal, even
though it is a patriarchal society where men are still the head of the household and women belong to
their fathers or husbands. However, according to Brooker, More consciously tried to provide women
with opportunities for education and work

Descriptive Essay About A Tree
There s a flower garden in one corner, a garden with tomatoes and cucumbers in the other, and a tall
hedge that grows along the outer edge, where the edge of the yard buts up against the neighbor s.
There are two apple trees on either side that drop hundreds of red delicious every other year or so;
they make delicious apple sauce. One, large oak tree is the alpha of the yard; it lumbers over the house
and shades the entire lawn. This small, suburban yard not only housed my mother s imagination, but
mine and all my cousins as well. My grandparent s backyard might seem ordinary, but it is actually
quite special. The giant oak tree, the shed, the swing set, and my grandmother s garden are all special
locations in the yard that continue to be sacred places for me.
The outdoors has been one of my favorite places to be for as long as I can remember. As a child, I
spent most afternoons galloping across the yard and through the trees pretending I was various
animals or just being with the trees. I ve always felt extremely connected to all living things, so it s no
surprise that the massive oak tree in my grandparents backyard holds a special place in my heart. The
oak resides in the direct center of the yard and must be at least three feet in diameter. This tree holds
so much life, squirrels, birds and chipmunks constantly jump from branch to branch and beautiful
green leaves sprout across every square inch. I wanted to exist closer to this energy, I wanted to
experience what it

Subversion of Class and Gender Roles in Jane Austen s...
Subversion of Class and Gender Roles in Jane Austen s Persuasion
In Jane Austen s Persuasion, Mrs. Croft makes but few appearances and delivers little dialogue.
Nevertheless, Austen gives her significant narrative and thematic importance. Mrs. Croft provides a
foil for several of the Elliots, while developing a commonality with the frequently ostracized Anne.
This bond between Mrs. Croft and Austen s heroine valorizes Mrs. Croft s radical views concerning
feminism and marriage. Beyond signifying a paradigm shift in such social morals, though, the roles of
Admiral and Mrs. Croft allow Austen to subvert the dominant upper class culture. By exhibiting
superior but genuine manners, by demonstrating the complacency ... Show more content on

Because of this clear characterization of Mary, when we hear of Mrs. Croft s mild sea sickness, we
admire her fortitude while recognising Mary s sacrifice.
Mrs. Croft thus differentiates herself from Sir Walter, Elizabeth and Mary. She also redefines
femininity among these acquaintances. Although not conventionally pretty, neither tall nor fat (34),
she has bright dark eyes, good teeth, and altogether an agreeable face (34). According to Anne, then,
an unconventional woman can still be attractive. Furthermore, to describe her weather beaten
complexion (34), Anne gently describes how Mrs. Croft [seems] to have lived some years longer in
the world than her real eight and thirty (35). The emphasis on living in the world, instead of on
aesthetic descriptions like aged or wrinkled, indicates that Anne, (and therefore Austen), values
experience and intellect, more than physical beauty.
Similarly, Mrs. Croft defies conventional notions of domesticity as the female realm. Mr. Shepherd
reveals that, while considering leasing Kellynch Hall, Mrs. Croft asked more questions about the
house, and terms, and taxes, than the Admiral himself (17). Thus, Mrs. Croft manages perfectly well
in financial affairs. Furthermore, Mrs. Croft does not exhibit the female delicacy, as does Elizabeth,
who relies utterly

Theme Of Imperialism In A Passage To India
In the novel A Passage to India, Forster portrays many of the interactions between the Indian
population and the British imperialists as an over arching metaphor for the shortcomings of
imperialism. This metaphor is further elaborated by the personal make up of certain characters,
through their values, and their actions towards one another. The following essay will focus on the
character Cyril Fielding and his ability to contrast the ordinary English imperialist and by doing so
expose the polarizing inroads of the British Raj.
A question one must ask when reading this novel is whether the connections between characters can
be made on an individual level, and not just from an imperial perspective. This notion is echoed by the

Muscle Protein Synthesis Essay
Introduction:
In recent years, interest has sparked the health industry to research protein consumption after exercise
to optimise muscle growth. Muscle Protein Synthesis (MPS) is not only an appealing topic for
bodybuilders, it is also beneficial to those over 60 years of age who may have experienced muscle
mass loss over time. A decrease in muscle mass does not only lead to a decrease in overall strength but
also makes daily movement severely painful, leading to a poor quality of life. All individuals can
benefit from increasing muscle protein synthesis via an increased protein intake after resistance
training. This will aid in maintaining muscle mass, strength and overall health (Wolfe, 2012).
Review of Research Studies:
Increasing muscle protein synthesis is crucial for the health of individuals over the age of 60. A study
conducted by Dr. Ryan Andrews shows that a change in daily protein intake can impact the building of
lean muscle mass. Participants between the age of 60 and 69 underwent a 12 week resistance training
regime and were given a post exercise protein drink after each session. Results showed a substantial
increase in lean muscle mass over the 12 week program for both males and females. Nevertheless,
results indicated those that had consumed a daily diet high in protein had comparable increases of lean
muscle mass as those with a daily diet low in protein. This indicates that it did not matter how much
protein was consumed daily, but the post exercise ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Similarities Between Dadaism And Internet Art
Art, quite simply, is a social force. It reflects on the feelings of people in society, whether individually
or as a whole. Usually art that vents the feelings of the artist occur around times or events that evoke
emotions powerful enough to provide a muse for artwork. Some art styles, such as Dadaism and
Internet Art, can directly tie their absurdist means to what was happening in that time. But do the time
periods in which those art styles were popular relate to the meaning behind the art? The similarities
between Dadaism and Internet/Postinternet art show the state of disarray and lack of hope for the
future that millennials have revived.
Dadaism
Dadaism is an art style defined as a form of artistic anarchy born out of disgust for the social, political,
and cultural values of the time. (Artyfactory). Pieces made in this style went against almost all of the
previously written rules of art, which earned it the title of anti art . Dada was presented in many ways,
the most well known being collages made on paper [Fig 1]. Another popular presentation was
photography, which was a relatively new concept at the time. These photographs turned ordinary
things into art by showcasing the abstractness of ordinary things as seen through a lens. One of the
most well known examples of Dada photography is Fountaine by Marcel Duchamp [Fig. 2].
Technology was also a new concept that Dada creating artists used to their advantage. Film and radio
broadcasting were used as mediums, one

The Glass Ceiling, By Charlotte Perkins Stetson
Faces of Women The glass ceiling is something still very present in today s society. Women in the
workforce are constantly trying to break through barriers set by society to break away from
stereotypes. Many women work twice as hard and still get paid significantly less than their male co
workers. They experience sex typing from a young age being pushed to study more feminine
occupations, such as nursing. While on the other hand men are encouraged to seek positions of power
and leadership. If a woman decides to choose an occupation that demands the use of intellectual
thinking, they are given boundaries to which they are limited. Women are seen as the weaker sex and
have been severely over diagnosed with depression, anxiety, or any other type of mental illness. We
see this issue addressed in Virginia Woolf s Professions for Women and Susanna Kaysen s memoir
Girl, Interrupted . Women are taught to that they need to display certain behavior and uphold a perfect
appearance in order to be taken seriously in society. Charlotte Perkins Stetson uses the art of writing to
bring us along the emotional ride of a woman who s true feelings were labeled unreliable in her story
The Yellow Wall Paper . For decades women have struggled with being treated as subordinates and
this continues today. We are able to see the unjust treatment of women reflected in their salaries,
promotions, and general treatment in the workforce, specifically the medical field. There has been

Wittgenstein Picture Theory Essay
There are many objections to the picture theory of meaning and unfortunately a large number of these
are due to misinterpretations of the Tractatus. Because The Tractatus is such a complex and cryptic
book, and because Wittgenstein can be quite vague in his explanations, readers interpret it in many
different ways and take different meanings from it and so objections and also defenses can be based
on underlying misconceptions. In Wittgenstein s Picture Theory of Language , David Keyt remarks
that it is difficult to see how Wittgenstein meets some of the common objections to his Picture Theory.
Because of this it is difficult to examine the strengths of the Picture Theory, and this extends to the
Tractatus as a whole. (p ) He argues that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is a one to one correspondence between the parts of a proposition and the objects of the states of
affairs pictured by the proposition. 2. Propositions are linear structures. 3. Every possible state of
affairs can be expressed in language. (497) Wittgenstein asserts that every fact can be expressed
through language when he says Man possesses the ability to construct languages capable of expressing
every sense. (4.002) Keyt considers solutions to this so called paradox but does not find any to be
satisfactory, therefore viewing this paradox as a huge flaw in Wittgenstein s picture theory. Another
objection comes from Anthony Kelly, In chapter 4 of his book Wittgenstein. He raises an interesting
objection to the picture theory. His concern in his objection is how exactly we can have the knowledge
of what a picture represents. Kenny imagines a musical score containing symbols that represent sound.
These symbols are intended to represent some kind of musical sound He states that Wittgenstein does
not here make clear what, in addition to A s having logical structure, and pictorial relation to B, is
needed for A to be a picture of B rather than the other way round. (Kenny, 70) . Wittgenstein does not

  • 2. The Role Of Marriage In The Kreutzer Sonata By Leo Tolstoy The novella The Kreutzer Sonata, written by Leo Tolstoy, discusses the issues of gender inequality and socio economic status through jealousy and rage over the portrayed relationship of marriage. Tolstoy also explores the themes of how the female gender is portrayed through marriage in the novella during the 1880s through the main protagonist Pozdnyshev and his wife. Pozdnyshev s attitude towards his wife and the opposite gender is deleterious. His wife is his object of desire, Lacan s term for a narcissistic want, persisting she only belongs to him. Because of Pozdnyshev s ideals about gender, his jealousy gets the best of him when Troukhatchevsky, the violinist that accompanies his wife while playing the piano to Beethoven s Kreutzer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She hires a music teacher named Troukhatchevsky where he would play the violin, and she would play the piano to Beethoven s Kreutzer Sonata occupying her time. Pozdnyshev then starts to think and believe that the both of them playing music together is an excellent excuse to cover passionate love. His jealousy consumes his every thought throughout the novella, making it difficult for him to see reality. One day, he comes home and sees an overcoat that belongs to Troukhatchevsky hanging by the doorway. Suddenly, a jealous rampage overcomes him after hearing laughter coming out from the room. He takes down a dagger and starts treading towards the room. Once he enters the room, Pozdnyshev raises the dagger and throws himself upon his wife, stabbing her near her heart. Once Troukhatchevsky realizes what is happening, he quickly runs off before Pozdnyshev can touch him. Overall, the novella was one of the most interesting stories I have read, and I enjoyed every page. The narration that Tolstoy portrays works well with the situation and highlights Pozdnyshev s psychotic rambling thoughts. Tolstoy creates the passengers on the train to portray his readers, as we are sitting in place with them and hearing the outrageous story for the first time. By having that aspect, I felt that I was the unnamed passenger hearing a story from a psychotic narrator. This not only helped me delve into the story but understand the ending and why Tolstoy included the train scene. I could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Lasting Implications Of The Watergate Scandal Watergate Scandal Grace Jacobson Block 2 November 22, 2016 The Lasting Implications of the Watergate Scandal I. Introduction I am not a crook is one of the most famous quotes from President Richard M. Nixon. Citizens of the United States of America would hope that their president would never have to defend himself as a crook, but that is just what happened in the presidency of Richard M. Nixon. President Nixon had to defend himself for not being a crook because of the events famously known as the Watergate Scandal . In 1972, members of Nixon s re election committee broke into the Democratic National Committee s Watergate offices and stole top secret documents as well as trying to get into their phone system. They eventually were caught and so was President Nixon which led him to his resignation. Even though it was an unfortunate event, there have been positive outcomes because of it. The lasting implications of the Watergate Scandal have been generally positive on society because of the passing of Ethics in Government Act, amending the Freedom of Information Act and 42 states passing election reform laws. II. Background Richard M. Nixon was a former vice president who barely won the election in 1968 against Hubert Humphrey for the Republican party. Once in his presidency, President Nixon pleased and displeased citizens in the United States. He was not necessarily the most liked president, but he was not the most disliked either. The Effects Of Fire And Flooding On The Florida Everglades Kristofer Mueller South Florida Landscapes The Effects of Fire and Flooding To Tree Islands in the Florida Everglades The topic of this research paper will be the tree island communities in the Florida Everglades and the different conditions that affect them. While conducting preliminary research on the topic, my hypothesis is that the effect of flooding shortly after a fire will have a positive effect on the tree islands. I believe that the flooding will bring in other resources that have been carried with the current and provide the community with enough resources for healthy growth following the fire. I believe the communities could benefit from have a source of water, instead of having more droughts after the fire. In the Everglades these patches of trees or islands of them are an essential piece of the landscape. These islands of trees are seen in both the short and the long hydro period wetland of the Everglades. What these islands start to do is provide a web of shade and they gives opportunity for these forest dwelling plants and animals to perform important biodiversity and nutrient cycling functions (Gained et al. 2002, Ross 2009). Tree islands can be all different sizes, in the short hydro period area these sizes can vary from anything of two to three trees to as big as several hectares with hundreds of trees. After receiving a Pathé Baby camera at the age of seven, he went on to create the equivalent of thirty short movies in various formats for friends and family by the time he turned twenty. His burgeoning career and dreams of being a film director were interrupted by Nazi Germany and the Second World War, but instead of evacuating to the United Kingdom he stayed in his homeland and fought, wisely changing his last name to Melville after his favorite author. Now a veteran of the Resistance in Nazi occupied France, Jean Pierre Melville later used his love of filmmaking and American gangster movies, accompanied by his disdain for the domineering French cinema establishment, to invent an entire genre of films and inspire an army of young directors to ignore conventional methods and embrace their own creations in their own unique ways. THE ACCIDENTAL ICON From the beginning, Melville caught the attention of audiences and critics with his hardboiled crime noir films both in terms of storytelling and filming techniques. So much so that writers coined a term for his films and those soon to follow by others directors as the French New Wave, and Melville was the Godfather. Buildings that offer an open arrangement of spaces and a flexible structural framework have the best potential for reuse. In Ecologic Architecture, Richard Crowther says, Our tendency to fixed state space planning is counter to our own dynamic of thinking, articulation, and mobility. 3 We have adopted this approach for the purpose of protecting the public s health and safety. The Uniform Building Code (UBC) requires buildings to follow a set of rules with respect to their occupancy and construction type. While establishing fixed uses helps simplify the regulatory process, the specificity of functions has gotten out of hand. The 1994 UBC outlines a total of 32 separate occupancies, each of which contains numerous sub sections. The subsequent hard separations and compartmentalization limits the capability of a building to adapt to future needs. • 21. Argument On Miracles Are Impossible There is another argument against miracles, which has less to do with empirics and more to do with philosophy, namely the claim that miracles are impossible. No matter what I have accounted for above and no matter what we experience in life, there is no need to believe in miracles since they cannot happen, according to this view. It became popular during the so called enlightenment in the 18th century minority world, and its main proponents were pantheists like Voltaire and deists like Thomas Jefferson, who used theological arguments for their naturalism. From the pantheistic perspective, nature is god and so god cannot break natural laws because then he would break his own backbone. From a deistic perspective, god simply stopped intervening in his creation after he created it, and so miracles are impossible because god never wants to perform them (Jefferson even took a Bible and cut out all Jesus miracles with a pair of scissors to prove his point). Neither pantheism nor deism provide any substantial argument for these claims, but in the 19th century an atheist philosopher called David Hume, developed an argument against the probability of miracles that became popular. Hume did not argue that miracles are impossible, since that s as unprovable as claiming that God doesn t exist, but he thought that they are highly improbable to the extent that one should never believe a miracle report. Similarly, Mrs. Croft defies conventional notions of domesticity as the female realm. Mr. Shepherd reveals that, while considering leasing Kellynch Hall, Mrs. Croft asked more questions about the house, and terms, and taxes, than the Admiral himself (17). Thus, Mrs. Croft manages perfectly well in financial affairs. Furthermore, Mrs. Croft does not exhibit the female delicacy, as does Elizabeth, who relies utterly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. Theme Of Imperialism In A Passage To India In the novel A Passage to India, Forster portrays many of the interactions between the Indian population and the British imperialists as an over arching metaphor for the shortcomings of imperialism. This metaphor is further elaborated by the personal make up of certain characters, through their values, and their actions towards one another. The following essay will focus on the character Cyril Fielding and his ability to contrast the ordinary English imperialist and by doing so expose the polarizing inroads of the British Raj. A question one must ask when reading this novel is whether the connections between characters can be made on an individual level, and not just from an imperial perspective. This notion is echoed by the conversations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 33. Muscle Protein Synthesis Essay Introduction: In recent years, interest has sparked the health industry to research protein consumption after exercise to optimise muscle growth. Muscle Protein Synthesis (MPS) is not only an appealing topic for bodybuilders, it is also beneficial to those over 60 years of age who may have experienced muscle mass loss over time. A decrease in muscle mass does not only lead to a decrease in overall strength but also makes daily movement severely painful, leading to a poor quality of life. All individuals can benefit from increasing muscle protein synthesis via an increased protein intake after resistance training. This will aid in maintaining muscle mass, strength and overall health (Wolfe, 2012). Review of Research Studies: Increasing muscle protein synthesis is crucial for the health of individuals over the age of 60. A study conducted by Dr. Ryan Andrews shows that a change in daily protein intake can impact the building of lean muscle mass. Participants between the age of 60 and 69 underwent a 12 week resistance training regime and were given a post exercise protein drink after each session. Results showed a substantial increase in lean muscle mass over the 12 week program for both males and females. Nevertheless, results indicated those that had consumed a daily diet high in protein had comparable increases of lean muscle mass as those with a daily diet low in protein. This indicates that it did not matter how much protein was consumed daily, but the post exercise ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 34. Similarities Between Dadaism And Internet Art Art, quite simply, is a social force. It reflects on the feelings of people in society, whether individually or as a whole. Usually art that vents the feelings of the artist occur around times or events that evoke emotions powerful enough to provide a muse for artwork. Some art styles, such as Dadaism and Internet Art, can directly tie their absurdist means to what was happening in that time. But do the time periods in which those art styles were popular relate to the meaning behind the art? The similarities between Dadaism and Internet/Postinternet art show the state of disarray and lack of hope for the future that millennials have revived. Dadaism Dadaism is an art style defined as a form of artistic anarchy born out of disgust for the social, political, and cultural values of the time. (Artyfactory). Pieces made in this style went against almost all of the previously written rules of art, which earned it the title of anti art . Dada was presented in many ways, the most well known being collages made on paper [Fig 1]. Another popular presentation was photography, which was a relatively new concept at the time. These photographs turned ordinary things into art by showcasing the abstractness of ordinary things as seen through a lens. One of the most well known examples of Dada photography is Fountaine by Marcel Duchamp [Fig. 2]. Technology was also a new concept that Dada creating artists used to their advantage. Film and radio broadcasting were used as mediums, one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. The Glass Ceiling, By Charlotte Perkins Stetson Faces of Women The glass ceiling is something still very present in today s society. Women in the workforce are constantly trying to break through barriers set by society to break away from stereotypes. Many women work twice as hard and still get paid significantly less than their male co workers. They experience sex typing from a young age being pushed to study more feminine occupations, such as nursing. While on the other hand men are encouraged to seek positions of power and leadership. If a woman decides to choose an occupation that demands the use of intellectual thinking, they are given boundaries to which they are limited. Women are seen as the weaker sex and have been severely over diagnosed with depression, anxiety, or any other type of mental illness. We see this issue addressed in Virginia Woolf s Professions for Women and Susanna Kaysen s memoir Girl, Interrupted . Women are taught to that they need to display certain behavior and uphold a perfect appearance in order to be taken seriously in society. Charlotte Perkins Stetson uses the art of writing to bring us along the emotional ride of a woman who s true feelings were labeled unreliable in her story The Yellow Wall Paper . For decades women have struggled with being treated as subordinates and this continues today. We are able to see the unjust treatment of women reflected in their salaries, promotions, and general treatment in the workforce, specifically the medical field. There has been much ... • 38. Wittgenstein Picture Theory Essay There are many objections to the picture theory of meaning and unfortunately a large number of these are due to misinterpretations of the Tractatus. Because The Tractatus is such a complex and cryptic book, and because Wittgenstein can be quite vague in his explanations, readers interpret it in many different ways and take different meanings from it and so objections and also defenses can be based on underlying misconceptions. In Wittgenstein s Picture Theory of Language , David Keyt remarks that it is difficult to see how Wittgenstein meets some of the common objections to his Picture Theory. Because of this it is difficult to examine the strengths of the Picture Theory, and this extends to the Tractatus as a whole. (p ) He argues that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is a one to one correspondence between the parts of a proposition and the objects of the states of affairs pictured by the proposition. 2. Propositions are linear structures. 3. Every possible state of affairs can be expressed in language. (497) Wittgenstein asserts that every fact can be expressed through language when he says Man possesses the ability to construct languages capable of expressing every sense. (4.002) Keyt considers solutions to this so called paradox but does not find any to be satisfactory, therefore viewing this paradox as a huge flaw in Wittgenstein s picture theory. Another objection comes from Anthony Kelly, In chapter 4 of his book Wittgenstein. He raises an interesting objection to the picture theory. His concern in his objection is how exactly we can have the knowledge of what a picture represents. Kenny imagines a musical score containing symbols that represent sound. These symbols are intended to represent some kind of musical sound He states that Wittgenstein does not here make clear what, in addition to A s having logical structure, and pictorial relation to B, is needed for A to be a picture of B rather than the other way round.
