User Fees
State and local governments over the past several decades have seen a dramatic decrease in state
and local government revenue. This is partly due to the reduction of the amount of revenue
states and local governments can obtain from property taxes due constraints and the reduction
in federal and state aid at the local level. As a result, state and local governments have turned to
the idea of charging user fees. User fees are a fees charged for the use of a products or services.
Unlike a tax, which is imposed on the general population of a state or local municipality, a user
fee is only charged to an individual when that individual uses that product or service. An example
of a user fee would a toll charge. Not all citizens must pay a toll charge.... Show more content on

People are willing to except an increase in user fees because there is nothing forcing a person to
pay any particular user fee. Increasing taxes is hard because the general population must pay a
tax increase whether they disagree with the increase or not. If an individual does not agree with
the increase in a particular fee then they simple can schoose to not use a particular service or
product. Additionally, user fees also allow for local government to diversify revenue sources.
Meaning that user fees can be generated from different sources such as golf course fees,
swimming pool fees and fees for entrances to national parks. The fees charged tend to have prices
that reflect the true cost of production. This means that individuals pay fees that tend to reflect the
actual cost of operating a product or service. People begin to see a direct link between payment and
benefit. At the same time individuals see the benefit of user fees related to the benefits provided,
local governments are able to track which services local communities want. This reduces the
amount of money local governments spend on products and services there community does not

Thriller Analysis
Thriller Album Analysis
Michael Jackson Thriller
Thriller is the sixth solo album released by Michael Jackson and is the follow up LP to Off the
Wall, which was released in August of 1979. The album was a response to the disappointment
Michael felt because Off the Wall did not receive the accolades that he thought it deserved. Off
the Wall was the best selling album by a black artist at the time, it reached number three in the
United States, produced two number one singles and would reached 20 million album sales
worldwide. The album earned him only one Grammy award. He thought he deserved more...
because Off the Wall was such a big hit , and vowed so few nominations would not happen again,
saying, You watch. The next album I do, you watch. I ll show them. (Pratt, 2010)
Key Production Personnel
The album s producer was Quincy Jones and co produced by Michael Jackson who is also the
featured artist. Bruce Swedien served as the recording and mixing engineer, using the Acusonic
Recording Process. Matt Forger served as the Technical Engineer and Steve Bates the Assistant
Engineer. The record was mastered by Bernie Grundman. (Jackson Swedien, 2001)
Album s commercial significance The album turned out to be more successful than anyone could
have anticipated. Thriller became the best selling album of all time. It won an unprecedented 8
Grammy awards . (Jackson Swedien, 2001) Ron Weisner, who was Jackson s co manager quotes in

David Hume s Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion Essay
David Hume s Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion provide conflicting arguments about the
nature of the universe, what humans can know about it, and how their knowledge can affect their
religious beliefs. The most compelling situation relates to philosophical skepticism and religion; the
empiricist character, Cleanthes, strongly defends his position that skepticismis beneficial to religious
belief. Under fire from an agnostic skeptic and a rationalist, the empiricist view on skepticism and
religion is strongest in it s defense. This debate is a fundamental part of the study of philosophy:
readers must choose their basic understanding of the universe and it s creator, upon which all other
assumptions about the universe will be made.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When they are young, they will be taught about the supremacy of religion and the fallibility of
philosophy and science. Demea s theology resembles the god of the gaps perspective, where any
failings of science and philosophy is more reason to believe that God exists within the things we
cannot explain. He hopes that as his students learn of this, they will believe that the paramount
objective of their education is to learn the nature of God, who is most important and constant being
in the universe. To summarize, Demea believes that humans will never fully understand the
universe; thus, the failure of science to provide explanations is the greatest proof of God and
greatest justification for faith.
Philo heckles the ideas of Demea while imposing his own ideas. As an empiricist and a skeptic, he
calls to let us become thoroughly sensible of the weakness, blindness, and narrow limits of human
reason. (131) Philo believes that because humans have been historically ignorant about science and
the universe, that humanity

Examples Of Adversity In Purple Hibiscus
Physically and mentally can be the end of people. Conditions at home can really mess them up.

Heteronormativity Definition Essay
This essay focuses on how Maretelle Ludik s Spring/Summer 2016 collection and how it relates
to how heteronormativity is viewed in modern society. Firstly I will define what is meant by
heteronormativity and provide the difference between sex and gender. Secondly I will give an
overview of one of the readers discussed in class and an external reader, furthermore I will discuss
how heteronormativity and genderhas evolved over the years. Thereafter I will dissect Martelle
Ludik s Spring/Summer 2016 collection and show how it relates to heteronormativity and gender.
Lastly I will provide a conclusion that will summarise my argument.
Heteronormativity is the view that all human beings are either male or female, both in sex and in
gender, and that sexual and romantic thoughts and relations are normal only when between people
of different sexes (Wordnik.com, 2016). Gender and Sex are not the same things. Sex is the state
of being female or male, whereas gender is the state of being masculine of feminine. Sex ... Show

Entwistle begins by discussing how clothes play a huge role in distinguishing whether someone is
male or female. Furthermore, she states that sex and gender do not mean the same things. Thus
when we meet someone for the first time we think we see their sex but in fact we do not. What
we see is their gender appearance and we assume that this is an accurate indication of their sex
(Entwistle J. 2000:141). In addition, Entwistle speaks about how clothing is far more than simply
garments that cover one s body. Clothes draw attention to the sex of the wearer so that one can tell,
usually at first glance whether they are a male or female. Clothing in this case is the main signifier
of difference, serving to connote femininity and masculinity. Clothing also compels our actions,
influencing how we sit, walk, and

The Da Vinci Surgical System
The da Vinci Surgical System
Have you ever wondered if it was possible for a robot to perform surgery? The da Vinci surgical
machine makes this possible (1). The da Vinci surgical system is a successful way to perform
robotic surgery. All around the world, surgeons use the machine to make surgerymore precise. The
invention of this system caused the medical world to scratch their heads in wonder of how great
the system really is. In this research paper I will outline the development, uses, present, and future
of the da Vinci surgical system. The da Vinci surgical system is a surgical tool that was developed
in the late 1980s. The da Vinci surgical system is a device where a surgeon s hand movements are

Surgeries assisted by robots have comparable or better outcomes than hand done surgeries (5).
The device has fail safe mechanisms, one of these mechanisms is that for the surgeon to be able
to start the surgery, the surgeon s head must be placed in the viewer, if not, the system will remain
locked and motionless (3). The robotic arms are kept from pivoting above or at the one inch entry
incision by a zero point movement system during the procedure (3). Without this mechanism, the
incision could be unintentionally torn (3). The power source for the machine includes a backup
battery that allows the device to run for twenty minutes if the main hospital power source fails (3).
This backup battery provides the hospital enough time to get the power back up and running (3). If
a power outage were to occur, the manufacturers put an eject protocol on the device which is
designed to prevent patient injury by quickly removing instruments and undocking the da Vinci
surgical system within 30 to 60 seconds (8). Any instrument not made by Intuitive Surgical will be
rejected by the machine due to a chip in each instrument (3). Information about each instrument is
tracked by these chips for more precise control and to keep track of instrument usage to determine
when it needs to be replaced (3).
Many patients appreciate less recovery time and less pain post operation (13). Benefits of robotic
assisted surgery include shorter hospital stay,

The Zookeeper s Wife
The opening scene of the Zookeeper s Wife is vital in establishing the binary between the oasis
of the zoo before the war and the destruction the war brings. Natural sunlight fills the first scene
of the film and green is a common color found throughout the zoo. The first scene oozes natural
beauty and signifies the life that occupies it. The zoo seems almost too perfect, like it could not
possibly be a creation of man, but of one gifted from the heavens. The zoo begins as the Garden of
Eden in the midst of Poland, but as the war erupts, it mimics the original sin, destroying the zoo
turning its sanctuary into a thing of the past. The ash from the ghettos covers the zoo and literally
represents destruction of not only the ghetto but, the former

What You Don t Know Might Kill You
What You Don t Know Might Kill You Millions of Americans wake up every morning and make
a decision about what they will eat for breakfast to jump start their day. Some may reach for a
bowl of Cheerios or multigrain cereal, while others may opt for yogurt, toast, or a pastry. Some
people choose to wash down their breakfast with pulp free orange juice, while some may drink a
protein drink or an invigorating coffee to get them going. For lunch, many people will consume
sandwiches piled high with meats and cheeses or perhaps a cheap meal from the nearest fast food
restaurant. When it comes to dinner, this meal may vary from family to family, but most dinners
consist of a starch or two, a kind of meat, some variation of a vegetable on a good day, and a dessert
to finish out the day.
People who regularly eat this way have more than just food in common. In fact, most people who
constantly eat the previously mentioned American diet, suffer from some sort of physical, mental,
or emotional illness, whether it be chronic headaches, poor gut health, obesity, diabetes, asthma,
chronic fatigue, ADHD, anxiety, or any of the other thousands of health problems. Many people
suffering from these illnesses are led to believe that there is no direct cure and that they will just
have to cope with their illness. However, what most of those people do not realize is that many of
the diseases they are plagued with are often caused by the chemicals that make up their food. Even
if the chemicals do

Women s Role Of Women During The American Revolution
The American Revolution began in 1775 as a war between the thirteen colonies in Great Britain and
North America. There was a series of events that caused The American Revolution. This Revolution
showed roles of woman at the time. When the war ended, and the colonies won their
independence.Once the colonies won they all combined together to make the United States of
America. During The American Revolutionthere was showings of how women s roles were at the
time.At the time that the soldiers were at Valley Forge there were women nurses. There was not
really a lot of things woman could do back then so the start of nursing was a positive thing for them
back then. After the American Revolution women were starting to make a little progress with an
impact, starting out with Abigail Adams. Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams, was a speaker, and she
explains to him along with the public about the importance of women. After she spoke women all
around started to make boycotts. At this point women had few rights, and married women had
something called the coventure law. This law stated that women were based on their husbands
identity, and when women get married they lose any rights to all her property.
There were many causes of the American Revolution, it was a series of events, that finally made
war.In 1772 Governor Thomas Hutchinson of Massachusetts reported that he and the royal judges
would be paid directly by London, and bypassing the colonial legislature. In late 1772,Samuel

My Family Of The Family Tree
I derive most of my identity from my Mother s side of the family tree, so this autobiography will
be a little lopsided; much like my personality. My maternal grandmother s family came from Sonder
Stenderup of Jutland, Denmark and my maternal grandfather s family is of German descent. The
original familyname was Gron, however my great grandfather change the surname to Green in
order to sound more American. My mother s grandparents came from Jutland, Denmark in 1905
and my grandmother was born in Racine in 1920. The only characteristic I inherited from that
side of the family is my punctuality, my outspokenness, and my ability to drink. I grew up in a
three bedroom, one bathroom house with my mother and four brothers along with a
neighborhood full of kids (mostly boys). I have three older brothers; 10, 9, and 8 years older
and one brother who is three years younger than me. My older brothers all joined the service as
they turned of age, therefore it created a split upbringing for me. Up until I was 8, I was treated
as the baby sister and my younger brother and I were constantly dragged to my older brother s
friends houses. My mother worked quite a bit, therefore, my eldest brother was in charge of the
rest of the clan, however, he usually delegated one of the other two brothers to watch me my
younger brother. Which is why I learned to play poker at a very young age, even though I m still
not good at bluffing my opponents. After I turned eleven, all of my older

Similarities Between Beowulf And Cain
Sabrina Spray
Daniel Gillespie
Word Literature 1/ENGL 2310 401
October 23, 2017
Kin from Cain In the story Beowulf, many of the themes are derived from the proverbs and
fables practiced in the old testament, while pagan beliefs of monsters, demons, and multiple
gods are added. The most popular of the biblical comparisons is viewed between Grendel, enemy of
Beowulf, and Cain, evil brother of Able. Grendel and his mother are both described as decedents of
Cain. The figure Cain is used as a metaphor during the period to represent the disorder and evil. In
the classic story of Cain and Able, Cain viciously kills his brother in a outbreak of jealously and
anger. For Cain s sin, he was banished from the Garden of Eden by God and left only to ... Show

In the Hebrew Bible, the figure Cain killed his brother and he drunk his blood. A quote read in
Beowulf that shows the dark and evil comparison of Grendel to Cain would be, Hygelac s
kinsman was keenly watching for the first move the monster would make. Nor did the creature
keep him waiting but struck suddenly and started in: he grabbed and mauled a man on his
bench, bit into his bone lappings, bolted down his blood and gorged on him in lumps, leaving
the body utterly lifeless, eaten up, hand and foot. (Angelo Saxon, 736 744). This is a evil action
Grendel typically does after he kills his victims. Grendel was believed to be able to shift his
shape and have magical powers, like Cain and his descendants. A good example would be when
Grendel cast the spell on the warrior s sword so no harm was done to himself. The most major
similarity between Grendel and Cain, is that they both are loners of society. They roam in the
shadows, with no one to fit in with. Both Grendel and Cain are threats to society and the order,
as shown by Grendel with the Danes. In Beowulf, Heorot, is the symbol of peace. This is also
known as the mead hall. That s where the warriors would gather to celebrate and rejoice for the
victory. In the story, when Grendel was first introduced, the audience is told that he is angry and
hated at all the sounds of laughter and fun, because he was hearing the laughing in his head when

Analysis Of Rape Fantasies By Margaret Atwood
Rape Fantasies by Margaret Atwood is a comedic approach to a very serious, concerning topic. I
believe what all of the fantasies discussed have in common is that the perpetrator seems to be
mindless, sensitive, and easily manipulated to produce the outcome the fantasizer is desiring.
Estelle also seems to be sympathetic towards her rapists. I also noticed she seems to very
degrading to herself and personal appearance of both her and the rapists. For example, Atwood
describes her rapist: not only is he ugly, you know, with a sort of puffy nothing face, like those
fellows you have to talk to in the bank when your accountКјs overdrawn of course I donКјt mean
theyКјre all like that but heКјs absolutely covered in pimples (Atwood). In some of

Atonement In The Trials Of Arabella
Written by Ian McEwan and later screen adapted by Joe Wright, Atonement is an extremely
effective and well presented metanarrative. It isn t until the final stages of the book where the
format of the story is disclosed, leaving the audience with an unsuspected shock. However, upon
closer inspection, the many indicative and self referential symbols can be recognised all throughout
the novel(2003) and the film (2007).
One of the most important and well recognised symbols of the book and the film is the prevalence
of The Trials of Arabella . Before we are introduced to the story line of Atonementwe are
introduced to that of The Trials of Arabella . at some moments chilling, at others desperately
sad...Arabella... is punished by ill fortune... on an impetuous dash towards a seaside town with
her intended... presented by a second chance in the form of an improvised doctor (Pg.1,
McEwan). Written by Briony Tallis, the play gives the reader the actual story line before the plot
is actually introduced. Similarly, although in the beginning of the film we do not know what the
story is about, the opening scene is of Briony in front of type writer, the scene is accompanied by
sounds of a typewriter and this follows Briony out of her room and through the house. Another
indication that Cecelia is in fact Arabella is the mention of the protagonist who ran off with an
extrinsic fellow. It grieved her parents to see their first born evanesce from her phone to go to

The Life Of A Registered Sex Offender
The Life of a Registered Sex Offender

Abstract
When we hear the phrase, sex offender, we normally feel repulsed. We think of dirty old creepy
men. I for one used to do this, I won t lie. This is because people like to rush to judgment. But my
opinions changed when I came to the realization that it s not just creepy old men who are sex
offenders. I want to talk about them, but not those who are serial rapists or child molesters; they
don t deserve to be talked about. I m talking about people who are convicted, whether it s falsely,
or unjustly, and have to wear a stamp on their forehead for the rest of their lives saying they are a
sex offender.
I have an uncle named Michael and he s 29; he ll be 31 in October. In 2006 in Fredericksburg,
Virginia, he was convicted of rape. A young woman lied and said he raped her, and now he will
forever be scarred. In many rape cases, the defense will say that the victim was fantasizing the
rape or is lying, but sometimes she really is lying (Siegel, 1995, p. 304). Virginia has a two tier
system for sex offenders, violent and non violent. Even though Michaels charge was for the rape
of an adult, he is still considered a violent sexual predator, forever. This means he can t go to
McDonalds, he can t go to see his nieces and nephews, and he couldn t even go to my high school

Literary Analysis Of Shrek 2
Nowadays, when we hear Shrek we think of him as an icon of the internet. In a world where
appearances seem to be societies focus, Shrek 2 reminds us that looks are fleeting, but what is
on the inside is what is important. Shrek 2 is a movie written in 2014 that follows the main
character, Shrek an ogre, on his journey in the kingdom, Far Far Away as he tries to acquire the
approval of his wife s, Fiona also an ogre, parents which are the human king and queen of Far Far
Away. Overwhelming, the movie is able to depict a fantastic children s romantic fairytale by
teaching a life lesson in the use a medieval style with numerous references to pop culture and iconic
soundtrack.
Although set in what seemingly resembles medieval times and the characters costumes fit the
backdrop, Shrek 2 presents modern references which enable the audience to realize the mockery
of today s world. Knowing that Fiona is a princess as well, we instantly know that Far Far Away is
where the royals live. The film creators draw this city in a way that looks strikingly similar to
Hollywood. As Shrek and Fiona arrive in front of her parents castle, crowds await them cheering.
Royals are put in a standard and admiration similar to those of celebrities, while the cheering
crowds at the gate resembles obsessive fans. The creator s use of this medieval Hollywood works
well because people are often idolized and idealized. Shrek displays an obvious hesitance on
visiting the in laws since he is aware his image

Sexual Response Cycles
Men and women all go through sexual response cycles. The response cycle occurs in both sexes
in four phases. They are excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution. The first phase, excitement
can come from different things such as kissing, sexual thoughts, erotic videos or pictures, all of
which can lead to arousal. During this phase, the body is preparing for intercourse. For both
men and women, excitement causes similar changes to their bodies such as nipples and
earlobes swelling. Muscle tension, heart rate, blood pressure, and blood flow increases. With
these changes, it can lead to heavier breathing as well as a change in color to skin, commonly
referred to as being flushed . While both men and women experience increased blood flow, the
increase in blood flow causes different things between each sex. Men will experience an erection
in the penis whereas women will experience swelling in the clitoris and labia. Also, women s
breasts can swell but men will not experience the same swelling. The next phase, plateau, is before
the orgasm. It causes our bodies to react in different ways, much of which is a continuation of the
excitement phase, such as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Analysis Of Medea And The Bacchae
In Euripides plays, Medea and The Bacchae, binary oppositions are present, such as the
opposition between man and god, foreigner and citizen, and men and women. Binary oppositions
are opposing terms that are put head to head in a piece of literature to show contrasting ideas
(Marvin, 1). Binary oppositions can also be good vs. bad, such as in the case of man and god. The
first binary opposition that is present in both plays is man and god. Marvin describes binary
oppositions as being against each other and one being superior to the other (1), such as man and
god. In The Bacchae, Dionysusis the god and Pentheus is the man, and both of them are always
clashing heads about who has the right to power over the other. Dionysus clearly shows his
superiority over Pentheus, showing the superiority of god over man. The chorus leader
described Dionysus superiority over Pentheus, Look how quickly Pentheus palace will be
shaken to its fall! Dionysus is in the palace. Worship him! (Euripides, Bacchae III: 586 589).
Another way that Dionysus is showing the god over man binary opposition is when he
manipulates Pentheus to dress as a woman to feel protected when he is really setting him up to be
murdered. Pentheus is at first hesitant of dressing like a female and inquires he not dress like a
woman, however, Dionysus further manipulates Pentheus by explaining that if he does not dress
like a woman to hide his true identity, he will be murdered (Euripides, Bacchae III: 836 837). In

The Doll By Charles Chesnutt
Charles Chesnutt s The Doll is a story of seeking truth, facing discrimination, and making bold
choices for the sake of one s own livelihood. Through Tom Taylor s slow building narrative,
Chesnutt reveals the complications keeping the barber from exacting his revenge on the man who
murdered his father, Colonel Forsyth. Despite having the perfect opportunity to do so, Tom remains
steadfast in the face of the colonel s taunts, ultimately deciding to stay silent. Aside from
highlighting Tom s emotional turmoil throughout the tale, The Doll also ponders how black
Americans are to advance and protect themselves, especially as individuals within a societal system
built against that very idea of social mobility. The story therefore... Show more content on

of The Doll.
Firstly, the narrator does not directly reveal Tom s raceor appearance in the first page of the text,
thus distinguishing the significance of perception in race relations. He infers it insteads through
a brief observation from the colonel s perspective, following an extensive description of Tom s
barber shop and his fellow barbers: The barber was apparently about forty, with a brown
complexion, clean cut features and curly hair. Committed by circumstances to a career of personal
service, he had lifted it by intelligence, tact and industry to the dignity of a successful business
(Chesnutt 248). Chesnutt s decision to depict Tom and his barber shop through the two white
characters eyes sets the tone for this tale. Contrary to allowing Tom to vouch for his own
appearance and establishment, Chesnutt demonstrates the way in which his livelihood is perceived
by those outside of his community, prior to his formal introduction to the readers. This imposes
the story s implicit narrative and Tom s core dilemma how his worth as a black man will always

The Critique Of Hester Prynne In On The Scarlet Letter
Throughout D.H. Lawrence s critique, On the Scarlet Letter, Lawrence emphasizes the idea that
Hester Prynne is condemned by today s society, as well as the late Puritan society. He further
criticizes her actions, willing to depict her to be a demon more than a simple sinner. D.H. Lawrence
evaluates Hester Prynnes flaws by using succinct diction, sarcasm, and biblical allusions. By
utilizing succinct diction, D.H. Lawrence ridicules Hester in order to expose the severity her sin.
Lawrence simultaneously attacks Hester Prynne s character in a figurative manner as he refers to
her as [an] Adulteress. Alpha. Abel, Adam. A (Lawrence). In a figurative sense, Lawrence
condenses his words in order to shoot Hester down with characteristics that best describe her. He
exposes her flaws through a series of attacks regarding her most prominent qualities: that she is an
adulteress; that she is a sinner who precedes the future generations; and that her sin is equal to that
of Adam s original sin. It is through the words that dignify the absolute worst of sinning in which
Lawrence s negative outlook on Hester is revealed. Succinct diction that symbolize and refer to sin
uncover Hester s withdrawal from attaining the moral perfection that Puritans desire. Lawrence
considers Hester s mortal sin as a reason that her life becomes a failure, that [her life] becomes a
farce (Lawrence). Lawrence is insightful in exposing Hester s flaws as, through his diction, he
argues that her

The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum by Heinrich Boll Essays
The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum by Heinrich Boll
Authors often use characters within their novels to show the consequences of challenging cultural
boundaries and, in turn, display their own personal concerns. It is not uncommon for characters to
reflect an author s ideology regarding social groups in their contemporary time periods. It is clear
that this is certainly the case with the 1975 novel The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum, (also
referred to as How Violence Develops and Where it Can Lead), written by the German Author,
Heinrich Boll. The Lost Honour is, on the surface, an attack on yellow journalism and the damage
it causes to the lives of the people reported on. However, with a more in depth analysis of the novel
we are able to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bolls sympathy and admiration for economically lower class citizens, most likely due to the
economic hardship faced by his father, is presented through the hardworking nature of Blum.
However, he also shows the suspicion cast upon Blum because of her comfortable living standards
as a result of her independent ways. This suggests that he is concerned with people s inability to
except rises in class without assuming something sinister or unlawful has occurred in the process.
Through the use of his characters in The Lost Honour and Bolls personal life experiences we are
able to see his concerns regarding the cultural boundaries within Germany.
Boll has demonstrated a sympathetic leaning towards females through the lack of power and rights
given to his title character Katharina Blum in correlation with his own political views. It is clear
that within The Lost Honour it is Blum who we are supposed to sympathise with. This is clear
through the satirical tone used by the less then objective limited third person narrator. One of the
things implied about women, specifically Blum, repeatedly throughout the novel is the fact that
they were created to satisfy men s sexual needs and little else. An example of this is during the
questioning of Blum about her relationship with Gotten as Beizmenne allegedly asked Blum Well,
did he fuck you? Blum

was Walt Disney s childhood like when he was younger that made him want to animate and put

Comparing Pentheus And Dionysus The King Of The Bacchae
Greek drama was performed in the late 6th century BCE in ancient Greece. Tragedians like
Euripides wrote very influential and popular plays such as the Bacchae. Greek tragedies lead to
Greek comedies such as Aristophanes Lysistrata. Many of the Greek dramas have similar concepts,
one of being duality. Without duality, the nature of our lives and the environment around us
remains unbalanced.
Pentheus and Dionysus represent a factor of duality. For example, they both battle against each
other to prove their point as leaders. Pentheus has just become the new king of Thebes and
would like to gain power of his people. He seeks to rule over with rationality and social order.
Whereas Dionysus is the youngest of all Olympians and wishes to prove to the world that he is
an all powerful god. However, he is also known as the god of wine and believes that everyone
should wind down once in a while and celebrate with self intoxication. His irrational ideas and
objectives are the opposite of Pentheus. The ultimate conflict between the two characters is that
Pentheus is in denial of Dionysus existence because he refuses to believe in irrationality. For
example in lines 471 480 in the Bacchae, Pentheus is speaking to Dionysus about Dionysus and is
in denial of his existence. Pentheus is so oblivious that he does not even recognize his presence.
This relates to duality because Dionysus is the opposite force working against Pentheus or vice
versa. Pentheus is devoted to living with

Weaknesses * Fuel. This is a huge weakness and gamble. Trying to manage fuel and the cost in a
market that is constantly changing is a weakness. * Market. The market is a huge weakness with
the economic downturn and people flying less, they are having a harder time to keep the basic
fares down low enough for people to fly. * Unions. The unions are somewhat of a weakness if they
continue to ignore the people that keep them running smoothly. I foresee an uproar if the suits get
another set of bonuses, when it is the crew that makes the equipment safe to fly. * Government.
The government is a weakness if they change or update some of the regulations that are in place
now. This could cause delays and plans to change and take more time between flights.
Opportunities
* Rewards. The rewards program is a huge opportunity if the market it more towards the individuals
that fly more than others do. * Contracts with competition. Their maintenance facility in Tulsa has
started receiving other company s planes for contracted repair. This is an opportunity to increase
and build another addition onto American Airlines family. * Hedging. Hedging with the fuel
market could save enough money in one year to offset the next year s fuel supply and costs.

English And Social Studies Class
Everyone s eyes were on the whiteboard as my teacher began writing what we all dreaded. The
fourth hour bell had just rung in my 10th grade honors English class, and I was just as nervous as
my classmates as I read out the words on the board. It was time for our In class essay test , which
our teacher announced would be given out randomly this week. The notion of writingessays for the
class never made me worried, but the fact that this one would be written in class and completely
graded on grammar usage concerned me, along with my classmates. My teacher fixed his
glasses and began setting the timer, after handing out the news story that we were tasked to
write about. I took a deep breath and began writing, hoping for the best. A week after that hour of
painstaking writing, I was surprised to find that I got a perfect score. That event first opened my
eyes to the types of classes I shine in. I predominantly succeed in English and social studies class.
I attribute my success to the nature of the classes, my study habits in those classes, my
relationship with teachers and students in the class, and, above all, my family pushing me along
the way. The first factor I noticed that helped me thrive in English and social studies classes is
how they are usually structured. One of the unique characteristics of these classes was that they
were discussion based classes. Along with being able to express your ideas freely, the classes also

His passionate and often exasperating life and his drive for re invention fed into his prolific
production of several works of art. Les Demoiselles d Avignon is a prime example of this. Picasso
s unique style of painting followed ideas and traits from both Cezanne and Matisse. He went on to
combine characteristics of both styles and add his own personal touch to create this shattering
masterpiece.
Picasso s appearance brought rivalry to Matisse and his styles and as they lived on the next few
years, they figuratively battled one another and always comparing and contrasting each other s

which created a platform for future artist and individuals alike.
To conclude, the life of artistic techniques and principles have taken a drastic change from when it

What Is Aggression
Aggressive behaviour develop where an individual is being praised or rewarded for being forceful.
Being praised or rewarded for such action, can be an encouragement and reinforcement to perform

According to (Cherry) aggression is the continuous, unacceptable behaviour that can cause physical

I think that people can be antisocial and unkind to others and decide that because they are in a
crowd or a group, they can do whatever they desire. In groups, they can make decisions among
themselves to rape and, or kill you. This behaviour would come about because there is no one to
identify you to say you are the one who did this to me.
Individuals of such would go unpunished unless someone from that particular group is willing to

Relative Deprivation Theory
Based on what (Walker and Smith, 2001) said, relative deprivation is the knowledge gained of
being deprived of something that he or she is entitled to get. Relative deprivation talks about
people who are not satisfied when they compare their positions to others and find out that they
have less than their peers or others. When people feel that they deserve more than they have got,
this can cause frustration which will lead to aggression. This occurs when people compare what
they have and it often occurs when conditions are improving and expectations are rising, but are not
met. It can be a temporary behaviour.
People are not aroused to political action as a result not of absolute changes in their material
conditions but of changes relative to the circumstances of those with whom they compare
themselves . Relative deprivation occurs where people or groups see themselves as being treated
unfairly over others

Victor Frankl Man s Search For Meaning
Viktor Frankl is a philosopher, but more importantly an incredible individual who survived the
Holocaust under the Nazi regime. In his book Man s Search For Meaning, he detailed life in the
Nazi death camps and elaborated on people s states of mind while inside the camp. He made
exclaimed that there were three different ways to discover the unique meaning of one s life:
achieving or accomplishing something, experiencing a virtue like love, and surviving and/or
overcoming suffering. The search for meaning that is discovered through these three modes is
vital to an individual s life. Doing a deed is the first step in identifying the distinct meaning of one
s life according to Frankl. In more concrete words, one must accomplish or achieve something in
order to find meaning in his or her life. An example of this is when a student works tirelessly and
diligently in a class and subsequently earn an A. That feeling of satisfaction allows the student to
potentially realize how much they enjoy that certain subject. After enjoying the subject, the student
could even realize that that subject is the the subject they want to pursue for the rest of their life.

or she can fully comprehend their partner. It also implies that in turn this full comprehension
allows them to truly know themself. Through the joy of love, one recognizes what life is about

to walk. Now with the ability to control their own movements they may start to use their hands
more for pointing and holding small objects and even feeding themselves. By their third year and
their eagerness to explore, they would be able to climb furniture and stairs and play with toys. They
would be able to grasp and use objects such as pencils and crayons. They would be more confident
in their walking and some would even learn to run. In their early stages and because it is important
for babies to be stimulated and have an interest shown to them, adults will try to communicate with
them though they are not yet able to understand what is being said. If babyâ€TMs are neglected

Another very important aspect that must be considered during the analysis of the portrait of
Ann Whitley Russell is color. In this portrait the artist tends to use a narrow array of colors that
are bland and monotonous. The artist uses the same colors of black, white, brown, grey and red
throughout the entire piece. The background is incredibly dull and the shades of brown get
darker as it moves further away from her head. In this portrait the red is only bright and exciting
color, it is found used for the plain velvet looking chair, the red accents on the cloth draped over
the chair, the stone in the center of her necklace and the thin line of lipstick on Ann Whitley
Russell s lips. The black of the sitters dress contrasts her pale white skin and due to the
incredibly dull background color more attention is given to her. By using these colors the artist
shows how although Ann Whitley Russell is a woman of great wealth, she is a plain woman and
instead of embellishing her with vibrant colors he focused on maintaining the sitters true essence.
Additionally, while analyzing the portrait of Lady Frances Knowles the importance of color is
also used however it is to express different meanings. It is easy to see that the artist of this piece
finds color very important due to the vast color pallet he uses in order to contrast the colors

He was convicted of treason by court martial in December 1894 and sentenced to life
imprisonment in solitary confinement on Devil s Island, a prison off the coast of French
Guiana (Derfler). Before his deportation to Guiana he was publicly degraded and humiliated.
This false conviction was based on a list called the bordereau, which contained admission to
secret French military information (Dreyfus). This list was picked out of the garbage pail of
Maximilian Von Schwartzkoppen, a German military attach in Paris (Johnson). Many years
passed before the truth was uncovered, Dreyfus was innocent and although false information was
used he was an easy target because the writing in the bordereau matched his handwriting and the
information came from an artillery officer (Johnson). In 1899, Alfred Dreyfus was granted a

Abstract
The Stroop (1935) effect is the inability to ignore a color word when the task is to report the ink
color of that word (i.e., to say green to the word RED in green ink). The present study investigated
whether object based processing contributes to the Stroop effect. According to this view, observers
are unable to ignore irrelevant features of an attended object (Kahneman Henik, 1981). In three
experiments, participants had to name the color of one of two superimposed rectangles and to ignore
words that appeared in the relevant object, in the irrelevant object, or in the background. The words
were congruent, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An interesting challenge arises when a task such as color naming is identified as both controlled
and automatic, by varying the other task involved. Color naming is identified as a controlled
process when the other task is word reading, but as an automatic process when the other task is
shape naming. Cohen, Dunbar and McClelland (1990) proposed an alternative explanation of the
Stroop effect, which does not distinguish between automatic and controlled processing. Instead,
they proposed that automaticity is a range, and that Stroop interference depends on the relative
degree of learning the particular tasks, not on processing speed.
Attention is thought to be selective focused on one subject at a time. Traditionally, it has been
assumed that automatic processing is involuntary, it does not require attention, and is relatively
fast; whereas, controlled processing is voluntary, does require attention, and is relatively slow. We
can conclude from this that the more we repeat a certain material or tasks the more it becomes
automatic and effortless to us.

their future. Most of these girls married are at a young age: One third of the world s girls are

  • 2. User Fees State and local governments over the past several decades have seen a dramatic decrease in state and local government revenue. This is partly due to the reduction of the amount of revenue states and local governments can obtain from property taxes due constraints and the reduction in federal and state aid at the local level. As a result, state and local governments have turned to the idea of charging user fees. User fees are a fees charged for the use of a products or services. Unlike a tax, which is imposed on the general population of a state or local municipality, a user fee is only charged to an individual when that individual uses that product or service. An example of a user fee would a toll charge. Not all citizens must pay a toll charge.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People are willing to except an increase in user fees because there is nothing forcing a person to pay any particular user fee. Increasing taxes is hard because the general population must pay a tax increase whether they disagree with the increase or not. If an individual does not agree with the increase in a particular fee then they simple can schoose to not use a particular service or product. Additionally, user fees also allow for local government to diversify revenue sources. Meaning that user fees can be generated from different sources such as golf course fees, swimming pool fees and fees for entrances to national parks. The fees charged tend to have prices that reflect the true cost of production. This means that individuals pay fees that tend to reflect the actual cost of operating a product or service. People begin to see a direct link between payment and benefit. At the same time individuals see the benefit of user fees related to the benefits provided, local governments are able to track which services local communities want. This reduces the amount of money local governments spend on products and services there community does not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The album earned him only one Grammy award. He thought he deserved more... because Off the Wall was such a big hit , and vowed so few nominations would not happen again, saying, You watch. The next album I do, you watch. I ll show them. (Pratt, 2010) Key Production Personnel The album s producer was Quincy Jones and co produced by Michael Jackson who is also the featured artist. • 4. David Hume s Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion Essay David Hume s Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion provide conflicting arguments about the nature of the universe, what humans can know about it, and how their knowledge can affect their religious beliefs. The most compelling situation relates to philosophical skepticism and religion; the empiricist character, Cleanthes, strongly defends his position that skepticismis beneficial to religious belief. Under fire from an agnostic skeptic and a rationalist, the empiricist view on skepticism and religion is strongest in it s defense. This debate is a fundamental part of the study of philosophy: readers must choose their basic understanding of the universe and it s creator, upon which all other assumptions about the universe will be made.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When they are young, they will be taught about the supremacy of religion and the fallibility of philosophy and science. Demea s theology resembles the god of the gaps perspective, where any failings of science and philosophy is more reason to believe that God exists within the things we cannot explain. He hopes that as his students learn of this, they will believe that the paramount objective of their education is to learn the nature of God, who is most important and constant being in the universe. To summarize, Demea believes that humans will never fully understand the universe; thus, the failure of science to provide explanations is the greatest proof of God and greatest justification for faith. Philo heckles the ideas of Demea while imposing his own ideas. As an empiricist and a skeptic, he calls to let us become thoroughly sensible of the weakness, blindness, and narrow limits of human reason. (131) Philo believes that because humans have been historically ignorant about science and the universe, that humanity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Heteronormativity Definition Essay This essay focuses on how Maretelle Ludik s Spring/Summer 2016 collection and how it relates to how heteronormativity is viewed in modern society. Firstly I will define what is meant by heteronormativity and provide the difference between sex and gender. Secondly I will give an overview of one of the readers discussed in class and an external reader, furthermore I will discuss how heteronormativity and genderhas evolved over the years. Thereafter I will dissect Martelle Ludik s Spring/Summer 2016 collection and show how it relates to heteronormativity and gender. Lastly I will provide a conclusion that will summarise my argument. Heteronormativity is the view that all human beings are either male or female, both in sex and in gender, and that sexual and romantic thoughts and relations are normal only when between people of different sexes (Wordnik.com, 2016). Gender and Sex are not the same things. Sex is the state of being female or male, whereas gender is the state of being masculine of feminine. Sex ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus when we meet someone for the first time we think we see their sex but in fact we do not. What we see is their gender appearance and we assume that this is an accurate indication of their sex (Entwistle J. 2000:141). In addition, Entwistle speaks about how clothing is far more than simply garments that cover one s body. Clothes draw attention to the sex of the wearer so that one can tell, usually at first glance whether they are a male or female. Clothing in this case is the main signifier of difference, serving to connote femininity and masculinity. Clothing also compels our actions, influencing how we sit, walk, and ... The device has fail safe mechanisms, one of these mechanisms is that for the surgeon to be able to start the surgery, the surgeon s head must be placed in the viewer, if not, the system will remain locked and motionless (3). The robotic arms are kept from pivoting above or at the one inch entry incision by a zero point movement system during the procedure (3). Without this mechanism, the incision could be unintentionally torn (3). The power source for the machine includes a backup battery that allows the device to run for twenty minutes if the main hospital power source fails (3). This backup battery provides the hospital enough time to get the power back up and running (3). If a power outage were to occur, the manufacturers put an eject protocol on the device which is designed to prevent patient injury by quickly removing instruments and undocking the da Vinci surgical system within 30 to 60 seconds (8). Any instrument not made by Intuitive Surgical will be rejected by the machine due to a chip in each instrument (3). Information about each instrument is tracked by these chips for more precise control and to keep track of instrument usage to determine when it needs to be replaced (3). What You Don t Know Might Kill You What You Don t Know Might Kill You Millions of Americans wake up every morning and make a decision about what they will eat for breakfast to jump start their day. Some may reach for a bowl of Cheerios or multigrain cereal, while others may opt for yogurt, toast, or a pastry. Some people choose to wash down their breakfast with pulp free orange juice, while some may drink a protein drink or an invigorating coffee to get them going. For lunch, many people will consume sandwiches piled high with meats and cheeses or perhaps a cheap meal from the nearest fast food restaurant. When it comes to dinner, this meal may vary from family to family, but most dinners consist of a starch or two, a kind of meat, some variation of a vegetable on a good day, and a dessert to finish out the day. People who regularly eat this way have more than just food in common. In fact, most people who constantly eat the previously mentioned American diet, suffer from some sort of physical, mental, or emotional illness, whether it be chronic headaches, poor gut health, obesity, diabetes, asthma, chronic fatigue, ADHD, anxiety, or any of the other thousands of health problems. Many people suffering from these illnesses are led to believe that there is no direct cure and that they will just have to cope with their illness. However, what most of those people do not realize is that many of the diseases they are plagued with are often caused by the chemicals that make up their food. Even if the chemicals do ... • 13. Similarities Between Beowulf And Cain Sabrina Spray Daniel Gillespie Word Literature 1/ENGL 2310 401 October 23, 2017 Kin from Cain In the story Beowulf, many of the themes are derived from the proverbs and fables practiced in the old testament, while pagan beliefs of monsters, demons, and multiple gods are added. The most popular of the biblical comparisons is viewed between Grendel, enemy of Beowulf, and Cain, evil brother of Able. Grendel and his mother are both described as decedents of Cain. The figure Cain is used as a metaphor during the period to represent the disorder and evil. In the classic story of Cain and Able, Cain viciously kills his brother in a outbreak of jealously and anger. For Cain s sin, he was banished from the Garden of Eden by God and left only to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the Hebrew Bible, the figure Cain killed his brother and he drunk his blood. A quote read in Beowulf that shows the dark and evil comparison of Grendel to Cain would be, Hygelac s kinsman was keenly watching for the first move the monster would make. Nor did the creature keep him waiting but struck suddenly and started in: he grabbed and mauled a man on his bench, bit into his bone lappings, bolted down his blood and gorged on him in lumps, leaving the body utterly lifeless, eaten up, hand and foot. (Angelo Saxon, 736 744). This is a evil action Grendel typically does after he kills his victims. Grendel was believed to be able to shift his shape and have magical powers, like Cain and his descendants. A good example would be when Grendel cast the spell on the warrior s sword so no harm was done to himself. The most major similarity between Grendel and Cain, is that they both are loners of society. They roam in the shadows, with no one to fit in with. Both Grendel and Cain are threats to society and the order, as shown by Grendel with the Danes. In Beowulf, Heorot, is the symbol of peace. This is also known as the mead hall. That s where the warriors would gather to celebrate and rejoice for the victory. It isn t until the final stages of the book where the format of the story is disclosed, leaving the audience with an unsuspected shock. However, upon closer inspection, the many indicative and self referential symbols can be recognised all throughout the novel(2003) and the film (2007). One of the most important and well recognised symbols of the book and the film is the prevalence of The Trials of Arabella . Champ State College of Florida Intro to Criminology CCJ 2010 Professor George Ackerman Barry Puett January 26, 2015 Abstract When we hear the phrase, sex offender, we normally feel repulsed. We think of dirty old creepy men. I for one used to do this, I won t lie. This is because people like to rush to judgment. But my opinions changed when I came to the realization that it s not just creepy old men who are sex offenders. I want to talk about them, but not those who are serial rapists or child molesters; they don t deserve to be talked about. I m talking about people who are convicted, whether it s falsely, or unjustly, and have to wear a stamp on their forehead for the rest of their lives saying they are a sex offender. I have an uncle named Michael and he s 29; he ll be 31 in October. In 2006 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, he was convicted of rape. A young woman lied and said he raped her, and now he will forever be scarred. In many rape cases, the defense will say that the victim was fantasizing the rape or is lying, but sometimes she really is lying (Siegel, 1995, p. 304). Virginia has a two tier system for sex offenders, violent and non violent. Even though Michaels charge was for the rape of an adult, he is still considered a violent sexual predator, forever. Although set in what seemingly resembles medieval times and the characters costumes fit the backdrop, Shrek 2 presents modern references which enable the audience to realize the mockery of today s world. Royals are put in a standard and admiration similar to those of celebrities, while the cheering crowds at the gate resembles obsessive fans. • 21. Sexual Response Cycles Men and women all go through sexual response cycles. The response cycle occurs in both sexes in four phases. They are excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution. The first phase, excitement can come from different things such as kissing, sexual thoughts, erotic videos or pictures, all of which can lead to arousal. During this phase, the body is preparing for intercourse. For both men and women, excitement causes similar changes to their bodies such as nipples and earlobes swelling. Muscle tension, heart rate, blood pressure, and blood flow increases. With these changes, it can lead to heavier breathing as well as a change in color to skin, commonly referred to as being flushed . While both men and women experience increased blood flow, the increase in blood flow causes different things between each sex. Men will experience an erection in the penis whereas women will experience swelling in the clitoris and labia. Also, women s breasts can swell but men will not experience the same swelling. • 22. Analysis Of Medea And The Bacchae In Euripides plays, Medea and The Bacchae, binary oppositions are present, such as the opposition between man and god, foreigner and citizen, and men and women. Binary oppositions are opposing terms that are put head to head in a piece of literature to show contrasting ideas (Marvin, 1). Binary oppositions can also be good vs. bad, such as in the case of man and god. The first binary opposition that is present in both plays is man and god. Marvin describes binary oppositions as being against each other and one being superior to the other (1), such as man and god. In The Bacchae, Dionysusis the god and Pentheus is the man, and both of them are always clashing heads about who has the right to power over the other. Dionysus clearly shows his superiority over Pentheus, showing the superiority of god over man. The chorus leader described Dionysus superiority over Pentheus, Look how quickly Pentheus palace will be shaken to its fall! Dionysus is in the palace. Worship him! (Euripides, Bacchae III: 586 589). Another way that Dionysus is showing the god over man binary opposition is when he manipulates Pentheus to dress as a woman to feel protected when he is really setting him up to be murdered. Pentheus is at first hesitant of dressing like a female and inquires he not dress like a woman, however, Dionysus further manipulates Pentheus by explaining that if he does not dress like a woman to hide his true identity, he will be murdered (Euripides, Bacchae III: 836 837). Lawrence evaluates Hester Prynnes flaws by using succinct diction, sarcasm, and biblical allusions. By utilizing succinct diction, D.H. Lawrence ridicules Hester in order to expose the severity her sin. Lawrence simultaneously attacks Hester Prynne s character in a figurative manner as he refers to her as [an] Adulteress. Alpha. Through the use of his characters in The Lost Honour and Bolls personal life experiences we are able to see his concerns regarding the cultural boundaries within Germany. Boll has demonstrated a sympathetic leaning towards females through the lack of power and rights given to his title character Katharina Blum in correlation with his own political views. It is clear that within The Lost Honour it is Blum who we are supposed to sympathise with. This is clear through the satirical tone used by the less then objective limited third person narrator. One of the things implied about women, specifically Blum, repeatedly throughout the novel is the fact that they were created to satisfy men s sexual needs and little else. An example of this is during the questioning of Blum about her relationship with Gotten as Beizmenne allegedly asked Blum Well, did he fuck you? Blum ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What was Walt Disney s childhood like when he was younger that made him want to animate and put together cartoons and movies? Where did his career start off from and how did he get to such a place. • 29. Comparing Pentheus And Dionysus The King Of The Bacchae Greek drama was performed in the late 6th century BCE in ancient Greece. Tragedians like Euripides wrote very influential and popular plays such as the Bacchae. Greek tragedies lead to Greek comedies such as Aristophanes Lysistrata. Many of the Greek dramas have similar concepts, one of being duality. Without duality, the nature of our lives and the environment around us remains unbalanced. Pentheus and Dionysus represent a factor of duality. For example, they both battle against each other to prove their point as leaders. Pentheus has just become the new king of Thebes and would like to gain power of his people. He seeks to rule over with rationality and social order. Whereas Dionysus is the youngest of all Olympians and wishes to prove to the world that he is an all powerful god. However, he is also known as the god of wine and believes that everyone should wind down once in a while and celebrate with self intoxication. His irrational ideas and objectives are the opposite of Pentheus. The ultimate conflict between the two characters is that Pentheus is in denial of Dionysus existence because he refuses to believe in irrationality. For example in lines 471 480 in the Bacchae, Pentheus is speaking to Dionysus about Dionysus and is in denial of his existence. Pentheus is so oblivious that he does not even recognize his presence. This relates to duality because Dionysus is the opposite force working against Pentheus or vice versa. Pentheus is devoted to living with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The fourth hour bell had just rung in my 10th grade honors English class, and I was just as nervous as my classmates as I read out the words on the board. The notion of writingessays for the class never made me worried, but the fact that this one would be written in class and completely graded on grammar usage concerned me, along with my classmates. My teacher fixed his glasses and began setting the timer, after handing out the news story that we were tasked to write about. I took a deep breath and began writing, hoping for the best. A week after that hour of painstaking writing, I was surprised to find that I got a perfect score. That event first opened my eyes to the types of classes I shine in. I predominantly succeed in English and social studies class. I attribute my success to the nature of the classes, my study habits in those classes, my relationship with teachers and students in the class, and, above all, my family pushing me along the way. In his book Man s Search For Meaning, he detailed life in the Nazi death camps and elaborated on people s states of mind while inside the camp. He made exclaimed that there were three different ways to discover the unique meaning of one s life: achieving or accomplishing something, experiencing a virtue like love, and surviving and/or overcoming suffering. The search for meaning that is discovered through these three modes is vital to an individual s life. Doing a deed is the first step in identifying the distinct meaning of one s life according to Frankl. In more concrete words, one must accomplish or achieve something in order to find meaning in his or her life. An example of this is when a student works tirelessly and diligently in a class and subsequently earn an A. That feeling of satisfaction allows the student to potentially realize how much they enjoy that certain subject. In this portrait the artist tends to use a narrow array of colors that are bland and monotonous. The artist uses the same colors of black, white, brown, grey and red throughout the entire piece. The background is incredibly dull and the shades of brown get darker as it moves further away from her head. In this portrait the red is only bright and exciting color, it is found used for the plain velvet looking chair, the red accents on the cloth draped over the chair, the stone in the center of her necklace and the thin line of lipstick on Ann Whitley Russell s lips. The black of the sitters dress contrasts her pale white skin and due to the incredibly dull background color more attention is given to her. A Replication of the Stroop Effect A Replication of the Stroop Effect Kimber Ann Cook Broughton High School 3/26/08 Ms. Greene IB Psychology SL 1, 738 Abstract The Stroop (1935) effect is the inability to ignore a color word when the task is to report the ink color of that word (i.e., to say green to the word RED in green ink). The present study investigated whether object based processing contributes to the Stroop effect. According to this view, observers are unable to ignore irrelevant features of an attended object (Kahneman Henik, 1981). In three experiments, participants had to name the color of one of two superimposed rectangles and to ignore words that appeared in the relevant object, in the irrelevant object, or in the background. The words were congruent, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An interesting challenge arises when a task such as color naming is identified as both controlled and automatic, by varying the other task involved. Color naming is identified as a controlled process when the other task is word reading, but as an automatic process when the other task is shape naming. Cohen, Dunbar and McClelland (1990) proposed an alternative explanation of the Stroop effect, which does not distinguish between automatic and controlled processing. Instead, they proposed that automaticity is a range, and that Stroop interference depends on the relative degree of learning the particular tasks, not on processing speed. Attention is thought to be selective focused on one subject at a time. Traditionally, it has been assumed that automatic processing is involuntary, it does not require attention, and is relatively fast; whereas, controlled processing is voluntary, does require attention, and is relatively slow. We can conclude from this that the more we repeat a certain material or tasks the more it becomes automatic and effortless to us. Methods Design The independent variable was represented by three conditions; three word lists printed in a variety of color inks.
