Majoring In Business
The area of study that I am drawn to is business. I remember in elementary school when my teacher
asks me what I would like to be, my first responds was to become a teacher. All through Elementary
school I keep up with this dream that I would one day become a teacher until I realized that I did not
like kids as much. In middle school, I was encouraging to become a lawyer. A lawyer was something
that I thought would fit for me because I am good at debating different topics. With the help of
research, I learned that become a lawyer required a lot of writing. Writing is something that I struggle
with which cause me to doubt my potential of become a great lawyer. My love for business took
places when I enrolled in a principle of business and finance class. Learning about all the work it takes
to run a business made me wanted to learn more about what it takes to become a business owner or
work for a business. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I would say that my best challenge so far is deciding what can of career I can get with a business
degree. I know that many people can received an associated degreed in business in least then 2 years. I
worry that when I get out of college from receiving my master degree would I have to compete with
someone that just spent 2 years in college. One of the awards of receiving a business degree is
knowing that I can still help people. When I choose to become a teacher, I wanted to be able to change
someone life around and make someone happy. Working in the field of business I can help people with
their finance or start a business that can change someone perspective of their

Does Tea Stain Your Teeth Research Paper
Does Tea Stain Your Teeth?
The tannin in drinks such as coffee, tea, and coca cola gets stuck in your teeth and make stains. Tannin
is a yellowish brown substance that is a type of acid. This acid will make your teeth change into a
different color such as yellow or brown. Teeth stains occur more often when you are drinking black or
dark colored drinks because the darkness of the drinks get embedded in your teeth. There are two
types of teeth stains, extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic is when the outer layer of the tooth stains and
intrinsic when the inner structure of the tooth turns a faint yellow.
The staining of teeth from coffee, tea, and soda doesn t happen overnight. According to a HuffPost

The Panorama Of A Lost Cause
The Panorama of a Lost Cause Through the eyes of Samuel Watkins, there are sights of horror,
dismay, and affirmations for one s beliefs. As sectional conflicts of the American Civil War, the views
of death in common soldiers, are transforming Watkins accounts depict that most soldiers were
prideful and willing to die for their side s beliefs, however, at the end of the day these men are still
dying. As the war grew on, so did the realizations of the horrors of battle. For the soldiers who were
immersed with the realisms of battle day in and day out, there was a sense that death even more
inevitable than ever before. It is clear from Watkin s accounts that men were ready to die for their
country on both sides, but especially the Confederates in the South. There was a belief in the rights of
Southern states. Most of these men knew they would die in battle, and they were prepared to do so.
One account of this is Watkins recollection of the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. They were just
beginning to fight on June 27th, and Watkins said, We all knew it was but the dead calm that precedes
the storm, (Watkins, 130). He mentioned that during the nights you could hear the shrieks and screams
of poor fellows left on the field, (Watkins, 131). Those screams of pain foreshadowed the official
outcome for most soldiers. It was as if there was no chance they would survive the war. Even before
the battles began, some men would just surrcumb to the fact that they weren t

The Stereotypes Of Sikhs
The Sikhs are a group of peaceful people from India. The Sikh religion intertwines the spiritual and
secular spheres, seeing love as the ultimate goal, one achieved only by practicing love in one s
everyday life. (pg 5, US News) Followers believe in reincarnation, karma and salvation, and that
spiritual evolution depends on their deeds and actions in life. People who don t understand, or even
know about, the Sikh religion commonly mistake them for Muslims because they resemble each other,
both having darker skin, men with beards and wearing turbans. September 11, 2001 was one of the
worst days in American History and will be remembered forever. It was a day that brought America
together to take down the terrorists that attacked the World Trade Center. With this came a fear and
hostility towards the people who attacked us. Even though it was a group of Muslim extremists,
Americans started grouping what they think to be Muslims all in one. Darker skin, beards on men and
turbans (pg 3, US News) Anyone who is seen with these characteristics is stereotyped into the terrorist
category now. This shows how close minded people can be. You don t see everyone turning against the
whites when they act in a terrorist manner. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Thomas Paine Age Of Reason
The Age of Reason in America was a revolutionary time in this country and American political activist
Thomas Paine had big involvement in this. When the 1700s came to an end so did puritanism in
America., Bbrilliant thinkers and scientists from the 17th century such as Galileo, Newton, Voltaire,
Rousseau, John Locke and many more helped discover new ways of thinking and believing in reason
over faith. This discovery, an evolution in America, helped explain a lot and correct many problems
and conflicts of the past. Citizens of America were believing in reasoning and scientific proof rather
than just living by religion only. Thomas Paine enlightened a whole country with his theories and
belief through his book šThe Age of Reasonš and also a new way of believing which was called
Deism. Deism is the belief that the universe is good, and accepting the existence of a creator on the
basis of reason but rejected belief in a supernatural deity who interacts with humankind. ... Show more

The Age of Reason represented a genesis in the way man viewed himself, the pursuit of knowledge,
and the universe. The principle of the Age of Reason was to think and live a different way. Instead of
living strict lives and only following God s word now each person has more freedom and ability to
explore and discover new things and to solve problems with real scientific results. Another big factor
in the Age of Reason was instead of Cchristianity overruling all religious beliefs, Deism arises and

there was logic and a reason for everything being the way it is. This belief discovered by Thomas

West Hendon Regeneration Scheme
The London Borough of Barnet Council sought to acquire the subject land, and the new rights over it,
in order to facilitate the regeneration of the West Hendon Estate and its immediate surroundings. The
scheme aims to provide; up to 2,000 residential dwellings, a new primary school, a community
facility, commercial units, and improved infrastructure in the area. The proposal is intended to provide
significant social, economic and environmental improvements for existing residents (The London
Borough of Barnet Council, 2014). It is to be delivered by Barratt Metropolitan LLP, a partnership of
Barratt London and Metropolitan Housing Trust, forming part of the wider Brent Cross Cricklewood
regeneration area, although being progressed independently.
The West Hendon regeneration scheme was identified in 2001 when the Decent Homes programme
required local authorities to offer residents a certain standard of housing. The West Hendon estate
failed to meet these standards, and after consideration of options, it was agreed that regeneration
would be the best way to achieve these. The Council s Core Strategy designates the Estate as one of
the Priority Housing Estates, requiring redevelopment and regeneration to meet these Decent Homes
Standards, with the proposal ultimately resulting in the complete demolition of existing buildings
within the Estate. The required area of land was defined and referenced as to land ownership and
occupation. The scheme has been split into development

Imagery In Living Like Weasels By Annie Dillard
In Living like Weasels , author Annie Dillard uses rhetorical devices to convey that life would be
better lived solely in a physical capacity, governed by necessity , executed by instinct. Through Dillard
s use of descriptive imagery, indulging her audience, radical comparisons of nature and civilization
and anecdotal evidence, this concept is ultimately conveyed.
Incontrovertibly, one of the first things one may notice upon reading the work, is the use of highly
explicit imagery connecting her thoughts and ideologies. With these techniques, her whole impression
of the essay establishes an adversary relationship between the natural world and the human world. In
summary, the author imposes that with weasels, much more freedom is granted through instinctual
living, rather than as humans, who live with choices. Through her vivid and truly descriptive imagery,
one may see emphasize and glorification to the way of life these little creatures live. Dillard writes I
think I retrieved my brain from the weasel s brain, from this hyperbole, she greatly induces her
extreme and genuine fascination with these weasels. This device ultimately emphasizes the central
idea that we as humans would be better off living and thinking like weasels. When exploring future
into the work, one may continue seeing this technique into play as Dillard states, The man could in no
way pry the tiny weasels off, and he had to walk half a mile to water, the weasels dangling from his
palm, and soak hi,

Analysis of a Poem “We wear the mask” Essay
Amber Davis Professor Quirk Literature 101 February 28, 2013 We Wear the Mask The lyric poem
We wear the mask by Paul Laurence Dunbar is a poem about the African American race, and how they
had to conceal their unhappiness and anger from whites. This poem was written in 1895, which is
around the era when slavery was abolished. Dunbar, living in this time period, was able to experience
the gruesome effects of racism, hatred and prejudice against blacks at its worst. Using literary
techniques such as: alliteration, metaphor, persona, cacophony, apostrophe and paradox, Paul Dunbar s
poem suggests blacks of his time wore masks of smiling faces to hide their true feelings. ... Show

Essentially, the person of this poem is asking why should the world get the right to know why they are
truly upset, and potentially use it against them; instead, have pride, hold your head up high, and put on
your mask. In doing so, the literary term paradox comes into play. This poem is about the true feelings
of blacks being hidden behind masks, when also the poem itself hides the fundamental issue of racism
from even being mentioned that alone is a paradox because the poem has a mask on as well. This
poem can also be seen as a paradox because this so called we is supposed to be wearing a mask when
in fact they are expressing their feelings and becoming vulnerable, aka no more mask. Although each
stanza has a bit of alliteration, the second stanza is the most dominant. Dunbar writes, Why should the
world be over wise,/ In counting all our tears and sighs?/ Nay, let them only see us, while/ We wear
our masks (6 9). The alliteration in this stanza is used heavily with the letter w. With the use of this
alliteration, it creates a sense of flow that helps the speaker get his point across more smoothly.
Although the poem is more cacophonic, and harsh, rather than euphonic, and harmonious, the use of
alliteration helps highlight the importance of this stanza s sayings. The alliteration aspect of this stanza

Mateen took the lives of forty nine individuals all because of their presence in a gay establishment.
This tragic incident wasn t the first attack on the LGBT community, but it s massive fatalities put
Congress under even more pressure to reform gun laws, gay rights, and suspected terrorist legislation.
As a political Science major, I take a special interest in the reactions among legislators after the
Orlando incident and believe there should be more equal protection for gay people under the law. The
two articles I will be analyzing, After Orlando, a Political Divide on Gay Rights Still Stands and Gay

among the divide in Congress over gay rights.
My first article, After Orlando, a Political Divide on Gay Rights still Stands, published in the New

show it s time for the argument to exist using logos stating, Gays have surpassed Jews as the minority
group most often targeted in hate crimes, according to the FBI. (Peters and Alvarez) This statement

The Bravery of Nelson Mandela
For to be free is not merely to cast off one s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the

against this discrimination (NelsonMandelas.com, 2012) . He had to endure the impossible to maintain
the justice in his country. Mandela s country was his main priority, he wanted to get rid of all racial
discrimination. Mandela was part of the ANC. The African Nationwide Congress which was South
Africa s national liberation movement. But unlike other activists instead of enduring violence as a

The Global Financial Crisis
In the following essay, I will briefly summarize some of the main events leading up to the global
financial crisis. Following this, I will discuss the effect this had on the banks and ergo the credit
supply, then examine how this contributed to the corporate failure. I will also pay some attention to
how the market imperfection can affect firms real decisions. Finally, I will sum up the main points of
the essay. The banking panic of the fall of 2008 set economies around the world into a severe
recession. The spark of the panic was seen in mid 2007 the credit boom, followed by the demise of
subprime mortgages and securitized products. This, in turn, raises worries about the solvency and
liquidity of financial institutions, evolving into a full blown banking panic. Resulting in the failure of
the Lehman Brothers and Washington Mutual, and multiple governments run financial institutions.
(Ivashina Scharfstein, 2009). As a result during 2008 the prices of most asset classes and commodities
declined, although the cost of corporate and bank borrowing rose significantly. In both the USA and
the UK interest rates peaked at over 5% (See Appendix A). Consequently, Syndicated lending started
to fall mid 2007, then accelerated during the banking panic September 2008. The lending in the fourth
quarter of 2008 2008: Q4 was 47% lower than the previous and 79% lower than in 2007: Q2 (ibib).
A decline in the demand could explain the overall drop in lending, it might also explain

Nitobe Inazo s Influence On American Culture
Nitobe Inazo and his widely international popular book, influenced the way Japan was viewed by
Americans and the rest of the world during modern times (1900 45). It is questionable whether or not
he was a reliable source. However, without a doubt, Inazo impacted to international view of Japan,
during a time of imperialistic military events leading up to the fall of Japan at the end of World War II.
Nitobe Inazo was an educator, author and diplomat best known for his book Bushido: The Soul of

son of a samurai who lived during the Meji and Taisho periods in Japan. After his early life, Inazo,

Business Information Systems Of The Drugstore Retail Industry
The Drugstore retail industry is a $31.4 Billion industry across Canada and continues to grow steadily
(Industry Canada, 2015). There are many competitors in the drugstore retail market in Canada both
small and large. With the entrance of large American companies such as Walmart and even their very
own parent company Loblaw s, Shoppers has been forced to be at the top of their game to stay ahead
in the drug retail market. The implementation of a produce section in select locations across Canada is
one of the many ways that shoppers has been adapting to this competitive industry. Due to this
adaptation, the company has opened itself to a whole new group of competitors from convenience

The Effects Of Alcohol On The Drinking Culture Of America
Throughout the eighteen hundreds saloons were the site of rockus drinking, profane drunkards, and
unthinking violence. This drinking culture was defined by masculinity and by free flowing alcohol
that permeated all throughout America, city to city. The saloons became so popular with working men
because it was time they could spend away from their wives and their homes. In Catherine Murdock s
book Domesticating Drink she argues that these elements of saloon culture, exclusivity, inebriety, and
violence, were eliminated by the increase in popularity of mixed sex speakeasies, cocktail parties, and
the overall domestication of drink. But this conclusion misinterprets the history of alcohol from
Prohibition to the present. Although alcohol is now consumed without the exclusively of the past, it
has evolved to be over sexualized and associated with a masculine culture of binge drinking over
sexualized and domestic violence. The domestication of drink did allow women to integrate into the
drinking culture of America and allowed women to join the drinking population if they choose to
drink. Murdock was correct in saying that the exclusivity of the all male saloon culture crumbled in
the nineteen teens and onwards into the twenties, thirties, and forties. One of the most important
transitions was that alcohol became far more prevalent in the household setting (165). The rise of
cocktail parties gave women an opportunity to drink that was softened feminized enough to remove its

After they light the candles and say kuddish, each person at the table dips a slice of apple into the
honey. Then a blessing is recited over the fruit. A pomegranate is said to has 613 seed. This number
corresponds to the number of mitzvoth, or types of good deeds, that Jews as a society must perform. A
pomegranate on the holiday table announces to the heavenly court that as many seeds as there are, that
s how many good deeds have been performed over the year. Hallah bread is commonly served on
Rosh Hashanah. A ladder, turban like shape, to the Hallah bread expresses the wish that the family s
prayers might ascend to heaven. Dough baked in the shape of a bird also represents the same wish. It
also stands for the words of the prophet Isaiah: As birds protect their young, so will God protect
Jerusalem. Some time between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, it is customary to throw bread
crumbs into a body of water as a symbolic act of repentance. Most Jews do tashlich the afternoon of
the first day of Rosh Hashanah. Family and friends gather together at the waterfront to cast away the
sins of the past year and resolve to be better in the year to come. Tashlich is a way to admit our own
faults and symbolically shed the baggage if last year s mistakes. In the villages of Eastern Europe it

Analysis Of Lars Eighner s Dumpster Diving
Most people have heard the phrase, Don t judge a book by its cover . This adage means that you
should not make judgements based off of what you see by first glance. This expression is not only
related to books, but to people as well. To clarify, if you see a woman walking down the street with
makeup on most people will begin to think either one of two things at the snap of a glance. A. She is a
makeup artist or B. She is insecure or hiding something. In reality, none of these answers could be the
possible truth. This woman can work at a restaurant as a hostess and just enjoy putting on makeup
occasionally. Our covers are can be based on a numerous things like the way we speak or displaying
common behavior similar to a group of people. The author of the essay Mother Tongue , other wise
known as Amy Tan, writes about her mother s broken english and how it has taken an impact on her
ability. In addition to this, Lars Eighner composes an essay called Dumpster Diving in which he
records his experience as a homeless man on the street scavenging through garbage to find his next
meal. Evident in both the essays and reality, Amy Tan s mother, Lars Eighner, as well as myself, have
all been judged by our verbal, stereotypical, and visual covers by others in society thus affecting how
we are regarded.
For one thing, verbal covers affect the way the communication and understanding between two
people. In the essay Mother Tongue , there are many instances in which Tan s

Malcolm X, a civil rights activist for justice and peace, and an important figure of Islam. He was an
underprivileged black fighting for freedom, while also embracing Islam and discovering Muslim
rights. Malcolm X gave determination for the movement, by presenting a few inspirational quotes.
This essay will discuss the inspiring Malcolm X quotes to his actions and thoughts in the black civil
rights movement
The first Malcolm X quote relates to society and most Muslims, involving the media and this era.
Stating, The media is the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent
look guilty and to make the guilty look innocent, and that s power. Because they control the minds of
masses . This quote displays the diversity of Muslims lives from others lives showed in the media. For
example, Muslims can be judged easily off source bases or people s opinions turned into media, yet in

Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve
your performance next time . This following quote represents that failing can give you motivation for
something, like how Malcolm X did in the black civil rights movement. Not only Malcolm X reflected
on this, but the other civil rights activists had to go through years in prison, signs, and non stop
slavery. they stood their ground on freedom and tried even harder to earn it when failing to. It s the
determination of Malcolm X which brought many others to get back up and fight for their lives. As
said in the quote, every heartbreak, every loss, every defeat contains its own seed, it s on lesson ,
meaning one can fail several times, and have a reason to get back up and do

1990 Popular Culture Research Paper
In 1990 popular culture had a big effect on things like TV and what people wore. One of these people
who were apart of popular culture was Will Smith. Will stared on a show called Fresh Prince of Baler.
This was more of a comedy and family show. The show kicked off wills carrier. As the show
progressed will started having things like custom shirts and over time became rich. But this was just
the begging in later years he started and movies. Will also went on to even raise a family. My point is
that the 1990 started a lot of people carriers and was great for publicly. National events can be good or
bad but in this case it s bad. On 1990 march 18th the biggest theft in history occurred. This took place

Spainish influenced by French, and Portuguese in the 15th century. There was a slave trade in
Morocco, slaves would come to Morocco to try and go to Spain, but instead were executed. Spain and
Portugal invaded Morocco and developed a settlement. Spain was the European country that colonized
Morocco. Spain wanted more power over different countries. Morocco gained independence in 1957

* The other political principle that underlies the political mechanism is conformity. The individual
must serve a more general social interest whether that be determined by a church or a dictator or a
majority. The individual may have a vote and say in what is to be done, but if he is overruled, he must
conform. It is appropriate for some to require others to contribute to a general social purpose whether
they wish to or not (Friedman, 1970).
* Freedmen states from his book Capitalism and Freedom, there is one and only one social
responsibility of business to use it resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits so
long as it stays within the rules of the game, which is to say, engages in open and free competition
without deception or fraud. (Friedman, 1970).
Current business climate promoting a green environment * Businesses, corporations, stakeholders
around the world have become aware of the needs and benefits of social responsibilities in order to
contribute to a green and sustainable environment. Sustainable business is not only providing products
and services that the customer wants but by not harming the environment at the same time.
* From the teachings of Casuistry , Confucian ethics of interdependence and the current business and

Personal Narrative Essay On The Let s Road
[THE_GIRL_WHO_SAID_TOO_MUCH]
[A_SHORT_STORY_BY_M.]
Led like a convict condemned to a lifetime in prison and flanked by two incredibly capable orderlies
and bound with her arms behind her back, the girl radiated raw spite and hatred. She didn t belong
here, not at all. What happened to her was not her fault. She did not ask to by tormented, tortured,
abducted, brainwashed, raped, possessed, amongst a nasty amount of other detestable subjugations.
And yet, here the girl was, suffering further because so many others had made her suffer. The girl was
a survivor, a fighter, an apex predator. She had made it this far, although by the skin of her teeth at
certain times. For her entire existence, the girl had been plagued with a darkness she knew all too well,
a darkness that led her to the conclusion that there was a high probability of her succumbing to it and
becoming a villain, grotesquely transforming into the type of evil beings she had fought since her
early teens. Ending up either in prison, condemned to death, or simply dead would come to no surprise
to her. But being committed to a psychiatric hospital for the most notorious and fucked up of
superhumans? Unfathomable.
And yet, here the girl was. The newest resident at what was publicly know as The Swiss Institute for

Stereotypes In The Film Fortunate Son
Paramount Pictures released the fictional movie Forrest Gump on July 6, 1984 to major success.
Robert Zemeckis directs the film, which stars Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump. Raised by his single
mother, Forrest grows up in Greenbow, Alabama. Throughout the movie, Forrest becomes involved in
many of the major events that occur in the United States between the 1950 s and 1980 s. Some of
these events include becoming a college football star at the University of Alabama, serving in the
Vietnam War, reporting the Watergate Scandal, becoming a shrimp boat captain, founding Bubba
Gump s Shrimp Co., and running across the country. During Forrest s helicopter ride into Vietnam, the
song, Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival plays. This song not only sets the scene as the
song commonly known, but also balances the political spectrum between liberals and conservatives.
One of the effects of Robert Zemeckis choosing the song Fortunate Son is the balancing of political
beliefs in the movie. Jeff Saporito interviews Tom Hanks regarding the films political agenda. Hanks
says that, The film is nonpolitical and thus nonjudgmental (Saporito). Jeff Saporito ... Show more

Taking a Look at Learning Organization
Why the Learning organization now? In view of the increasing global competition, an in increased in
customer sophistication and the lowering of the potential to maintain competitive advantage through
technology or economics, and the need for organization to survive in a changing global environment,
organizations are now conscious that the only source of competitive advantage is the ability of such
organizations to learn faster and smarter than their competitors. The concept of learning organisation
fits in the context and is more apt to bring the desired change. An organization facing uncertain,
changing or ambiguous market conditions need to be able to adopt learning concepts. They must
continuously learn to survive and adapt in this dynamic and competing environment in which they are
operating. Organizations adopting this concept will be able to adapt to the rapid and continuous
change. Consequently marked improvements on the competitive performance of the organization will
be visible.
What is a learning organisation
The concept of learning organization emerged in the late 80 s proposed by Boydell, Pedler and
Burgoyne (1989). However, it was only in the 1990s that learning organization became a common
concept in organization theory. The learning organization concept attained broad popularity when
Senge published his bestselling The Fifth Discipline: the art and practice of learning organization, in
1990.
The learning organisation is considered as an organisation

  • 4. The Panorama Of A Lost Cause The Panorama of a Lost Cause Through the eyes of Samuel Watkins, there are sights of horror, dismay, and affirmations for one s beliefs. As sectional conflicts of the American Civil War, the views of death in common soldiers, are transforming Watkins accounts depict that most soldiers were prideful and willing to die for their side s beliefs, however, at the end of the day these men are still dying. As the war grew on, so did the realizations of the horrors of battle. For the soldiers who were immersed with the realisms of battle day in and day out, there was a sense that death even more inevitable than ever before. It is clear from Watkin s accounts that men were ready to die for their country on both sides, but especially the Confederates in the South. There was a belief in the rights of Southern states. Most of these men knew they would die in battle, and they were prepared to do so. One account of this is Watkins recollection of the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. They were just beginning to fight on June 27th, and Watkins said, We all knew it was but the dead calm that precedes the storm, (Watkins, 130). He mentioned that during the nights you could hear the shrieks and screams of poor fellows left on the field, (Watkins, 131). Those screams of pain foreshadowed the official outcome for most soldiers. It was as if there was no chance they would survive the war. • 6. Thomas Paine Age Of Reason The Age of Reason in America was a revolutionary time in this country and American political activist Thomas Paine had big involvement in this. When the 1700s came to an end so did puritanism in America., Bbrilliant thinkers and scientists from the 17th century such as Galileo, Newton, Voltaire, Rousseau, John Locke and many more helped discover new ways of thinking and believing in reason over faith. This discovery, an evolution in America, helped explain a lot and correct many problems and conflicts of the past. Citizens of America were believing in reasoning and scientific proof rather than just living by religion only. Thomas Paine enlightened a whole country with his theories and belief through his book šThe Age of Reasonš and also a new way of believing which was called Deism. The West Hendon regeneration scheme was identified in 2001 when the Decent Homes programme required local authorities to offer residents a certain standard of housing. The West Hendon estate failed to meet these standards, and after consideration of options, it was agreed that regeneration would be the best way to achieve these. The Council s Core Strategy designates the Estate as one of the Priority Housing Estates, requiring redevelopment and regeneration to meet these Decent Homes Standards, with the proposal ultimately resulting in the complete demolition of existing buildings within the Estate. • 8. Imagery In Living Like Weasels By Annie Dillard In Living like Weasels , author Annie Dillard uses rhetorical devices to convey that life would be better lived solely in a physical capacity, governed by necessity , executed by instinct. Through Dillard s use of descriptive imagery, indulging her audience, radical comparisons of nature and civilization and anecdotal evidence, this concept is ultimately conveyed. Incontrovertibly, one of the first things one may notice upon reading the work, is the use of highly explicit imagery connecting her thoughts and ideologies. With these techniques, her whole impression of the essay establishes an adversary relationship between the natural world and the human world. In summary, the author imposes that with weasels, much more freedom is granted through instinctual living, rather than as humans, who live with choices. Through her vivid and truly descriptive imagery, one may see emphasize and glorification to the way of life these little creatures live. Dillard writes I think I retrieved my brain from the weasel s brain, from this hyperbole, she greatly induces her extreme and genuine fascination with these weasels. This device ultimately emphasizes the central idea that we as humans would be better off living and thinking like weasels. When exploring future into the work, one may continue seeing this technique into play as Dillard states, The man could in no way pry the tiny weasels off, and he had to walk half a mile to water, the weasels dangling from his palm, and soak hi, ... Analysis of a Poem “We wear the mask” Essay Amber Davis Professor Quirk Literature 101 February 28, 2013 We Wear the Mask The lyric poem We wear the mask by Paul Laurence Dunbar is a poem about the African American race, and how they had to conceal their unhappiness and anger from whites. This poem was written in 1895, which is around the era when slavery was abolished. Dunbar, living in this time period, was able to experience the gruesome effects of racism, hatred and prejudice against blacks at its worst. Using literary techniques such as: alliteration, metaphor, persona, cacophony, apostrophe and paradox, Paul Dunbar s poem suggests blacks of his time wore masks of smiling faces to hide their true feelings. ... Essentially, the person of this poem is asking why should the world get the right to know why they are truly upset, and potentially use it against them; instead, have pride, hold your head up high, and put on your mask. In doing so, the literary term paradox comes into play. This poem is about the true feelings of blacks being hidden behind masks, when also the poem itself hides the fundamental issue of racism from even being mentioned that alone is a paradox because the poem has a mask on as well. This poem can also be seen as a paradox because this so called we is supposed to be wearing a mask when in fact they are expressing their feelings and becoming vulnerable, aka no more mask. Although each stanza has a bit of alliteration, the second stanza is the most dominant. Dunbar writes, Why should the world be over wise,/ In counting all our tears and sighs?/ Nay, let them only see us, while/ We wear our masks (6 9). The alliteration in this stanza is used heavily with the letter w. With the use of this alliteration, it creates a sense of flow that helps the speaker get his point across more smoothly. Although the poem is more cacophonic, and harsh, rather than euphonic, and harmonious, the use of alliteration helps highlight the importance of this stanza s sayings. I will also pay some attention to how the market imperfection can affect firms real decisions. Finally, I will sum up the main points of the essay. The banking panic of the fall of 2008 set economies around the world into a severe recession. The spark of the panic was seen in mid 2007 the credit boom, followed by the demise of subprime mortgages and securitized products. This, in turn, raises worries about the solvency and liquidity of financial institutions, evolving into a full blown banking panic. Resulting in the failure of the Lehman Brothers and Washington Mutual, and multiple governments run financial institutions. (Ivashina Scharfstein, 2009). This drinking culture was defined by masculinity and by free flowing alcohol that permeated all throughout America, city to city. The saloons became so popular with working men because it was time they could spend away from their wives and their homes. In Catherine Murdock s book Domesticating Drink she argues that these elements of saloon culture, exclusivity, inebriety, and violence, were eliminated by the increase in popularity of mixed sex speakeasies, cocktail parties, and the overall domestication of drink. But this conclusion misinterprets the history of alcohol from Prohibition to the present. Although alcohol is now consumed without the exclusively of the past, it has evolved to be over sexualized and associated with a masculine culture of binge drinking over sexualized and domestic violence. The domestication of drink did allow women to integrate into the drinking culture of America and allowed women to join the drinking population if they choose to drink. Murdock was correct in saying that the exclusivity of the all male saloon culture crumbled in the nineteen teens and onwards into the twenties, thirties, and forties. She did not ask to by tormented, tortured, abducted, brainwashed, raped, possessed, amongst a nasty amount of other detestable subjugations.
