Character Roles In Kate Chopin s The Awakening
Kate Chopin s The Awakening certainly links in with Propp s character functions, although often
Chopin seemed to play around with her characters, changing their functions as the novel evolved and
so on. In the case of this novel, Propp s functions definitely aid our understanding of the mindset of
both Chopin and her heroine, Edna. Chopin both incorporates and manipulates the concept of
character functions. Several of the characters experience a change in their function as the novel goes
on, with some falling under more than one heading. An interesting aspect of the novel is that the
character functions can be observed differently by Edna, and by the reader. This adds to the experience
and comprehension of the novel as we can view it from two mindsets.
From early on, we are introduced to Léonce Pontellier as the villain . He is trapping Edna in a
restrictive world; in a horrible stereotype. However, Mr. Pontellier as the ... Show more content on

For this reason, the reader may not view him as such, and may rather label him a victim. Léonce
Pontellier is a villain because he assumes his wife will be the perfect housewife, like the women who
idolized their children, worshipped their husbands, like Madame Ratignolle. Léonce is too old
fashioned for Edna and is unable to satisfy all of her needs, and her expectations for her life. As is said
in The Awakening, ...all declared that Mr. Pontellier was the best husband in the world (p 9). In some
ways this is true, for a man of his time, Mr. Pontellier would have seemed the perfect husband;
supporting the family, spending time with his children and caring for his wife. However, there are
some moments of blatant sexism, such as his assuming that she would care for the children alone (p
6). This would be deemed unacceptable today, but using Mr. Pontellier as a medium, it helped me to
understand the expectations of women in the late 19th century, which I found

Debating The Evidence On Spanking

Debating the Evidence on Spanking
According to Smith (2012), spanking does not lead to immediate obedience. Alan Kazdin, a Yale
University psychology professor and director of the Yale Parenting Center and Child Conduct Clinic,
says spanking does not work and you cannot punish out these behaviors that you do not want.
Spanking does not lead to long term obedience either. Graham Bermann (2008) says that physical
punishment can work momentarily to stop problematic behavior because children are afraid of being
hit, but it doesn t work in the long term and can make children more aggressive. There are three major
negative outcomes that are correlated with spanking. First, physical punishment ... Show more content

The research on disciplinary spanking is misleading. There are three major criticisms of the research
against spanking. The first is correlational which does not prove causation. All of the evidence against
spanking has been based on correlations. Most of Gershoff and Grogan Kaylor s evidence is based on
cross sectional correlations. These correlations only consider data collected during one time period
without considering the previous state of the research participants. This kind of correlation technique
superficially makes spanking appear to cause aggression since the children spanked more often are the
children who were more aggressive during the same time period. This is a problem for research on
spanking because there is no way to tell what came first in cross correlational research so there is no
way to tell what affects what. Even if infrequent spanking is correlated with better outcomes than
overly frequent spanking, that does not prove that zero spanking is best. Every child is different. There
is not a certain amount of times a child can be spanked in order for them to change behavior. Only 4 of
their 75 studies were limited to two open handed swats to the buttocks for child defiance. The other 71
studies lumped together all spanking regardless of how it was implemented and why it was used. Not
all spanking is the same, some is stronger

Egoism In Ayn Rand s Anthem
In Ayn Rand s book Anthem, The character Equality 7 2521 also known as Prometheus ran into the
uncharted forest after being told that his box of light was a sin to create because he now knew more
than his brother s in the uncharted forest he found out that the golden one had followed him. Then the
two uncovered homes from the unmentionable times. In the uncharted forest he discovered the
unspeakable word Ego . Throughout the book he expressed traits of an Egoist. But in the book because
prometheus had been in a dystopian society where they had to think of themselves and their brothers
as a whole they were not allowed to think of themselves. So was Prometheus really a egoist? Or was it
just his little bit of selfish coming out after not ever being allowed to think about himself?
The sacred word is Ego. no one is allowed to speak this word in this dystopian society that Ayn Rand
creates in the book Anthem. When Equality was young he saw a man being burned at the steak for
discovering the unspeakable word from the unmentionable times. He said that the man being burned
was not screaming out in pain or asking for it to stop but rather he was smiling at Equality. Equality
said that it was like the man was trying to mouth the unspeakable word to Equality. The way that Ayn
Rand had Equality describe the man it seemed that he was different then the rest of the people that
Equality grew up with and knew. He seemed happier. As Equality grew up he felt different than the

Single Camera Conventions
A single camera production is the use one single camera to film all of the diverse shots. An advantage
of single camera production is the flexibility with shots due to other cameras not being in the frame
and also the low budget. On the other hand, single camera production comes with disadvantages such
as being time consuming and difficult to consistently reposition; furthermore if the camera is damaged
all work may be lost. Within this essay, I will be discussing the elements in which make up a single
camera production along with indicating an understanding of the codes and conventions that relate to
this area of media.
Single camera productions can use certain narrative structures such as linear, where the narrative runs

Compare And Contrast Juir 3 And Juror 8
This play by Reginald Rose was very dramatic. In this courtroom, there was a case about a young man
that is guilty or innocent of murdering his father. This case consisted of a group of twelve jurors.
These twelve jurors had so much about themselves that was alike and in some ways they were all
different.
In this case, the juror 3 and juror 8 are very different. Juror 3 appears to be a very intolerant person
also he is known as a bully. On the other hand juror, 8 is an open minded individual that always listens
to someone before speaking his part in something. Juror 3 also believes whatever I say I m always
right and nobody could correct me or tell me something that proves him wrong. For example, What s

Dna Replication Essay
Since we discovered that DNA is in the nucleus in every single cell, we re curious about how exactly
DNA can be replicated in a way that can keep our identity, including our characteristics. This could be
described after learning about DNA and its very individual characteristics, along with transcription
and translation, which are the two steps of DNA replication. These steps can determine our
characteristics, as well as our personalities. DNA is mostly made of adenine, thymine, guanine and
cytosine. These all make hydrogen bonds, and that s only if it s connected to the correct base. An
example of this would be when thymine connects to adenine and guanine connects to cytosine.
Though, since this is mRNA being created, adenine would connect ... Show more content on

The DNA helicase latches on to the DNA molecule, unzipping the double helix, letting enzymes break
the hydrogen bonds that connect the base pairs. Also, complementary nucleotides that are floating
around and about in the nucleus form hydrogen bonds according to their pairs: thymine to adenine and
guanine to cytosine. Due to the hydrogen bonds being more breakable, the DNA is much easier to
unzip for replication. In the cytoplasm you can also find tRNA. tRNA contains a 3 nucleic code on
one side and on the other side, there s a special protein on the other. In the cytoplasm, mRNA attracts
ribosomes that have a similar 3 letter code of tRNA. The amino acids from tRNA then bond with the
mRNA, which then creates a protein chain when a start codon or Methionine is reached. This chain
will eventually stop once the stop codon is reached. This will then create a completed protein. In
conclusion, even through replication, we are still able to keep our characteristics due to the stationary
and unchanging method of replication, which is where we keep the same genetic coding. With the
steps of DNA replication, this determines our characteristics, along with our personalities. The more
we continue the studying of genetics, we may one day be able to cure disorders before the person is
even born or

Wilfred Owen s Poems On The Futility Of War
Poems using strong poetic technique and devices are able to create a wide range of emotions from the
readers. Wilfred Owen s poetry effectively uses these poetic techniques and devices to not only create
unsettling images about war but to provide his opinion about war itself with the use of themes within
his poem. The use of these themes explored Owen s ideas on the futility of war and can be seen in the
poems: Anthem for Doomed Youth, Futility and The Next War. The poems provide unsettling images
and belief of war through the treatment of death, barbaric nature of war and the futility of war.
In majority of Owen s poem, he demonstrates the true image of war and the impact it has on the
soldiers rather than masking it with the lies of pride ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The idea of the futility of war can be seen in the poem Strange Meeting, where the persona creates a
scenario of two opposing soldiers having a conversation in Hell. The line, The pity of war, the pity
war distilled uses repetition with the word pity to imply the pity that is felt for the soldiers that have
died at war. The use of the word distilled is indicating how war is attracting the concentration of many
people and that the soldiers are dying for pointless reasons, intensifying the pity felt on the soldiers.
Futility of war is again demonstrated in Owen s poem, Futility, in the final stanza with the rhetorical
question, Was it for this the clay grew tall? Owen use of imagery of clay grew tall is making a biblical
reference to humans being made by clay and questioning was the creation of humankind futile due to
the recurring inevitability of war and suffering. In the previous lines, Owen compares the sun with
God and is desperate to bring his comrades back to life, Woke, once, the clays of a cold star The use of
the oxymoron is Owen indicating that the sun is now weaker than it was previously. Owen is
explaining how futile the sun was to provide life on Earth if it is unable to bring back the dead. The
reference to a cold star is highlighting the life that was brought to Earth has now turned cold due to it
being destroyed and killed from war. This presents Owen s idea of the futility of war as it will result in
the destruction of

U.s. Japanese Government Policies Essay
Introduction The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of a set of the recent
Japanese government policies. Before China overtaking the second largest economy in the world in
2011, Japan has kept the position for several decades. However, after the housing bubbles burst in
1990s, Japan had economically struggled where it can no longer grow at such a substantial rate as
previously. In fact, its economy had shrunk when other neigbouring economies, such as Taiwan and
South Korea, had prospered. So Abe Shinzo was elected as the prime minister of Japan and he has
tried to revive the economy under Abenomics; yet, its impacts on the real economy seem ineffective
until recently. This is why I think it will be interesting to evaluate whether Abenomics was the best
option for Japanese government for reviving the economy from the prolonged recession. Was
Abenomics effective? Research questions are as follows: A) Were the uses of monetary and fiscal
policies effective during recession in Japan? B) Will the structural reforms be effective solution for
Japanese economy? I will examine the effectiveness of Abenomics by looking at the historical
economic data in Japan from 1980 to 2015. In addition, I will introduce some of literatures and
relevant books to support my view on Abenomics. Literature review Japan s lost decade Hayashi and
Prescott (2002) conducted a study on Japan s lost decade to provide a new interpretation based on
neoclassical growth model.

Feelings of terrify if they do not perform well and anxiety of the awaiting punishments are those that
motivate them to act. These feelings are basically created by regular excessive trainings.
Tools, including bull hook, electric pads, metal rods, and drugs, are used simultaneously in the
training sessions. Elephants, despite their thick skins, are very sensitive in several parts, particularly
under their chins, behind their ears, and around their eyes. Trainers would use these weaknesses,
striking them with pointed bull hook, as their aces to control the elephants. Teeth of the animals are
plunged with hammer, reducing the risks of trainers being bitten and make them more manageable.
Drugs are injected and given to some of the animals, particularly to alter their moods and to stabilize
them in desirable conditions. Carry forward with the effects of the training, animals are exposed to
some effects, both physiologically and psychologically. On physiological effects, each of the animals
requires its own unique and specific needs for diet, health, veterinary care, and social interaction.
However, circuses train animals in similar ways, compelling them to live and travel under same
conditions. In addition, the intense heat during the summer and freezing cold during the winter induce
animals to die when they travel from one city to another. The poor ventilation inside the cage also

Vygotsky And The Social Development Theory

(Gallagher, 1999). Collaborative learning refers to a group of students who work together to learn and

The Social Development theory consists of four basic principles:
1. Children construct their knowledge
2. Development cannot be separated from its social context
3. Learning can lead to development
4. Language plays a central role in mental development
(Gallagher, 1999).
The first principle deals with the idea that children will actually talk it out to themselves, or use what
Gallagher (1999) referred to as private speech . For example, if a problem arises that is too difficult for
the child to understand, he/she may talk to him/herself to plan out the steps that they will take to solve
the problem. (Gallagher, 1999). The second principle deals with the idea that cognitive development
depends on the child s interaction with people and their culture to stimulate growth in the child s
thought and behavior processes. (Keritsis, n.d.). The third principle centers around the idea Zone of
Proximal Development (ZPD) (Gallagher, 1999).; the zone of proximal development refers to a
situation where a child has a problem that is too difficult for them to solve on by themselves; however,
the child is able to solve the problem when given guidance and encouragement by someone who

Ethical Dilemmas In The True Story And Movie Lone Survivor
Ethical dilemmas are common occurrences in the world, especially when it comes to war. They can
create situations with very difficult decisions and unknown consequences. Due to the difficulty and
necessity for a decision during an ethical dilemma, it is important for soldiers to understand what an
ethical dilemma is, and how to proceed in making a decision during such an event. The true story and
movie Lone Survivor provides an excellent example of an ethical dilemma and the potential
consequences of each decision that could be made during the scenario. This paper will go over the
ethical dilemma, the possible solutions and consequences of such a dilemma and the choice I would
have committed to.
The Lone Survivor is a story about four Navy SEALs who were dropped off in the Hindu Kush
Mountains in order to conduct surveillance on and potentially kill or capture Ahmad Shah, a Taliban
Leader (Sherconish, 2014). Unfortunately for the SEALs they were seen and compromised by three
goat herders. The goat herders did not have any weapons on them and were quickly captured and tied
up. Also one of the goat herders was a small male child. It was suspected that the goat herders had ties
to the Taliban and would alert them given the chance. The ethical dilemma is when on such a high
profile mission and compromised by a small group of civilians, what is the most ethical decision to
make (Berg, 2013)?

The Characteristics Of An Entrepreneur
Our world is going through an entrepreneurial revolution. A lot of research has been carried in an
attempt to define entrepreneurship while more and more people are being encouraged to become
entrepreneurs. The following study based on the stream of literature and researches on
entrepreneurship focuses on the concept of the entrepreneur and explore his background, his
characteristics and the factors that influences entrepreneurship.
The Entrepreneur: A definition
Gartner (1990), while reviewing the theories of entrepreneurship notes that it is a complex concept
with not even an agreed definition of its scope. Although attempts have been made as early as the
eighteenth century to identify the role of the entrepreneur, opinions are still as diverse as they were.
On one hand there are stereotypical characteristics of entrepreneurs like they are born leaders,
optimists, charismatic, extremely self confident and they inspire people. On the other hand, anyone
who works for himself or owns a business calls himself an entrepreneur. There have also been several
debates to differentiate entrepreneurs from small business owners and managers (Schumpeter 1934).

Ralph s Spears Quotes
The spears symbolize the wrong use of power. When Ralph was in charge, no one used spears, except
for the hunters, who were only a minority of the group. After Jack became leader of his own tribe,
everyone had a spear. Jack did this so the boys would feel that they were more powerful if they were
part of his tribe. Close to the end of Lord of the Flies , Ralph learns from Samneric that Roger
sharpened a stick at both ends. (p.211) This meant that they were going to do the same thing to Ralph,
as they did with the Lord of the Flies cut his head off and place it on the stick. Ultimately, the spears
divided the boys instead of bringing peace and unity to them. The log represents how the boys tried to
be civilized by having assemblies, but they failed. In the beginning, Ralph would blow the conch, to
call everyone to gather around and sit on the logs for the assemblies. After, when most of the kids had
joined Jack s tribe, no one came to the assemblies. This was because every child got corrupted with
Jack s thoughts and joined him, even though he was unsuccessful in creating a civilized community.

Upon deciding to go public, a company looks into preparing an initial public offering (IPO). There are

Once this process has finished, the investment bank is paid a percentage of the sale as commission as
well as fees for the underwriting process. Due to the discount of the IPO from the estimate of the
market value, traditional IPOs normally trade much higher than the initial price (Clinton, 2011). Being
a long used and well known process, traditional IPOs allow for more choices of underwriters. Using
an investment bank with experience in traditional IPOs allows for the road show to give the high
profile investors a greater idea of the value of the company, and since the allocation of shares is done
during this process they can avoid over valuing the company. Nayantara Hensel writes that
underwriters who do less than three IPOs a year will average a first day price increase of 10%. On the
other hand Hensel also tells us that the average first day price increase for all traditional IPOs is 38%,
meaning a loss in the potential capitol for the company. The investment bank underwriting for a
traditional IPO normally gets a 7% underwriting fee of the amount earned or more, bringing the
potential money lost to 45 50%.
Auction Based IPO An auction based IPO uses the Internet to open a company s IPO stock for
purchase to more potential investors. This process allows a company to spend less on their underwrite
fees. The company

effort to achieve sexual stimulation. As a result, women [began] hitting her with a whip...and each
time Linda screamed (134). Also, when Bernard completely loses his social status after John refuses to
show up to one of his parties, he ...began to weep...[and later] took four tablets of soma (182).
Bernard, in an attempt to reach something he absolutely loved attention and social approval ended up
filling himself with a drug addicting enough to put his mental health in danger. Considering people
today take whatever drug they can to avoid feeling sad, Portman s quote prevails. Lastly, when John
tries to defend morals like being chaste, he is rebuked by Mustapha Mond, who says, ...chastity means
passion [and neurasthenia], [and those things] lead to instability...and instability means the end of
civilization (239). Later, when he begins whipping himself as an act of self discipline, he is
encouraged to continue by a crowd of desensitized people saying, Do the whipping stunt. Let s see the
whipping stunt (257). Both these quotes support Postman s take on Huxley s fear, which go, Huxley
feared [society] would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, [orgy

Man Ray Case Study
Chapter 4. Case Studies
(I) Man Ray Gun with Alphabet Stencils (1924) The below artwork was done by Man Ray, a pioneer
in the 20th century and a leading figure in both Dada and Surrealist art movements
(Phillipscollection.org, 2017). Although Man Ray considered himself as a painter, starting from the
late 1910s, he began his devotion to photography (The Art Institute of Chicago, 2017). Through his
playful experimental approach to motion and visual puns, these elements defined the characters of his
work of art. Long before film photography and today s digital camera age, Man Ray used a range of
media to portray his artwork he empowered viewers to discover the meanings behind each work.

Whether knowingly or unknowingly, these X ray like circular shapes can be anything in the minds of
the viewers, interpreting the meaning of this image in a number of different ways. Marcel Duchamp
stated that It was his achievement to treat the camera as he treated the paintbrush, as a mere instrument
at the service of the mind (Biography.com, 2017). In addition, the photogram might seem expressive
and abstract, yet on the contrary, it is the precise medium to document the everyday objects in an
unrepeatable and somehow uncontrollable way. The artist cannot predict how the selected objects will
be recorded under the light sources that were tampered with. From the first glance, the image
completely dissociated from its original subject, allowing one s memory to fill the gap. Yet below its
surface, the image is an accurate documentation that captured a moment of psychical intensity. It
revealed a new visual experience, using objects in the simplest way. One can say that the use of this
medium disclosed reality more preciously due to its invisibility and mysterious representation (The
Museum of Modern Art, 2017).
(II) Andreas Gursky Rhine II (1999) Looking at another example, the photograph below was created
by Andreas Gursky, a German photographer known for his large scale landscape colour photographs
captured from a high point of view (Tate,2017). The photograph portrayed the river Rhine just outside

Monument Informative Speech
Many of us live for the present and anxiously wait for the future but, we often put aside our past. We
all know if we don t learn from our past it will repeat itself. Learning our history is essential, we see it
displayed everywhere; books, monuments, holidays, parades, etc. Memorializing an event or person
and creating a monument takes up a lot of time, a location, and need to have a powerful reason so not
all our historical events will be qualified to be displayed with monuments, holidays or parades but by
just acknowledging the past.
Memorializing an event/person and creating a monument takes plenty of time. Time and dedication is
a huge role, monuments especially take some extra time since they re usually made by hand. Waiting

We would all love to memorialize something or someone and love even more to make a monument for
someone but where it would happen is hard to find. The location is relevant to everything because it
needs to fit perfectly and has to connect to the audience. Finding the location is very complicated
because you need do a lot of paperwork and have to buy the land or talk to the landowners. Savage
Kirk wrote a book about the monuments in Washington D.C, stated The public monument speaks to a
deep need for attachment that can be met only in a real place, where the imagined community actually
materializes and the existence of the nation is confirmed in a simple but powerful way. When making
a monument, keep in mind if it will be public or private and who your audience are so your location
fits. You want it to be a place where the monument has enough space to have plenty of people to come
visit it, the location should also be a place where you feel a connection/bond, you can t provide that so
make sure you choose carefully. The audience should feel welcomed to come and be able to enjoy it
comfortable and peacefully. Christine Musser, a writer and journalist wrote a expert Preserving

Human Beings are Under Constant Stress
Within the human being there are innumerable, infinitesimal equilibriums put out of whack by the
instances and circumstances we encounter throughout our quotidian life this is the mindset of the
holistic practitioner. Comprised of many complex components working in harmony with one another
the human being is under constant stress. The stress of work, of school, of husbands and wives strain
those mentioned equilibriums to their extent and enact illness directly due to those imbalances. One
way to remedy this imbalance is that of the Holistic approach. Holistic medicine includes:
acupuncture, biofeedback, faith healing, folk medicine, meditation, megavitamin therapy, yoga and
many more. At some point in your life you have heard this phenomenon that is holistic medicine;
people tend to have a strong sense of what holistic means, whether or not they can actually define it.
Holistic medicine is a form of healing that considers the whole person body, mind, spirit, and
emotions in the quest for optimal health and wellness (WebMD). Holistic medicine embodies the
mindset that there are interdependent cogs within each human, if a spoke breaks via physical,
emotional, or spiritual disparity, even if the in smallest instance, the whole system will be
compromised. All parts will be affected and will suffer, and health will be negatively impacted
whether it be illness, ailment, or otherwise. Holistic medicine and healing is practiced widely
throughout the Asian cultures

Atkins Diet Effects
Living in a world that seeks instant gratification, losing weight quickly rather than safely seems to be
more important. This is one of the reasons that high protein, low carbohydrate diets such as the Atkins
diet are so popular. The Atkins diet claims that by consuming less carbohydrates, the body will burn
fat including body fat to use as fuel. As a cardiologist, Dr. Robert Atkins, the creator of the Atkins diet,
claimed this diet was completely safe. However, he does not explain the effects of the diet that go
beyond simply weight loss. The Atkins diet can have many negative health effects in the long term.
The way that the Atkins diet works is by forcing your body to used fat as fuel rather than glucose, the
body s preferred fuel source.

Lyme Disease Assignment
For this assignment, I interviewed a close friend, Dana Rivard. Dana is also a first year student; she is
from Massachusetts and majoring in Health Sciences. In a friendly conversation, a few weeks ago she
mentioned having Lyme disease. I grew up in a rural part of Indiana so my childhood consisted of
playing outside almost everyday. My front yard is full of trees, and because I live in a very forested
area right across from a corn field, these trees often have ticks. My parents always warned us to be
cautious of ticks by using insect repellant and making sure we were wearing long clothing if we were
going to be close to the trees. Our dogs would often get a tick here or there that my parents would
have to pull off, but only once or twice do I remember one of my siblings or cousins getting a tick on
them. My parents and grandparents always warned us about Lyme disease, because it was such a
prevalent topic in Indiana. As a child, it seemed as if my parents were overreacting, which is why it
was so interesting to see that Dana had gotten Lyme disease.
According to the CDC, Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is
transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks. Typical symptoms include fever,
headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. Lyme ... Show more content

with one look that she had Lyme disease. She was given antibiotics to take twice a day for three
weeks, along with staying out of the sun, wearing long sleeves and a hat. When I asked Dana how the
overall experience was, she said it was very painful and confusing because initially she did not know
why she was hurting. Overall, she is thankful because if it wouldn t have been caught it could have

Comparing Julius Caesar And Antony
Octavian and Antony No contemporaries could have possibly known for sure as to who the victor
would be from the conflict that arose between Gaius Julius Ceasar Octavianus, Octavian, and Marcus
Antonius, Antony. However, knowing what the ultimate outcome of the struggle was, one may be able
to look back into history and offer key reasons as to why Octavian was able to defeat Antony.
Ultimately, I believe there was not one key reason for Octavian victory. It was a combination of
Octavian s proximity to Rome, his favor with the citizens, and the elimination of his opposition at
home that all combined to allow his eventual triumph. Overlooking some smaller details, it is first
important to know that after Julius Ceasar s assassination that Octavian was named his heir and
returned to Italy to claim this inheritance. From here, he gathered military power and allowed the
senate to use him, in order to advance his political position, and he was sent to fight against a
rebellious Antony. At this point, Octavian did not try to decimate Antony s forces, instead he proposed
and ultimately formed the second triumvirate with Antony and Lepidus as the other heads of the state
(Wells 13). From here, the Roman territories were divided into areas of governorship with Antony
taking the east, Octavian the west, and Lepidus had the Africa territories (Wells 17). This would turn
out to be one of the main contributing factors in Octavian s ultimate success; for it allowed him the
opportunity

Speech On Goats
Goats (Capra hircus) One of the earliest animals to be tamed by mankind is goats (Capra hircus). A
thousand years have passed since these creatures were initially domesticated by man back in West
Asia and have spread internationally since then. Goats are animals with a wide ecological spread,
which makes them as a very common type of animal. Their physical features include a thick body,
cloven hooves, and horns. In 1758, Carl Linnaeus gave Capra hircus as the goat s Latin name. Goats
are divided into two main types: domestic goats (Capra hircus) and mountain goats (Oreamnos
americanus). Domestic goats are the goats that we typically see being raised and bred in farms,
meanwhile mountain goats are found living in steep, rocky areas specifically in ... Show more content

Although they are herbivores, they are known to eat and chew on almost everything that they find in
their surroundings including cardboard boxes and tin cans. They practice this eating habit in order to
determine to find out if the food is good enough to eat. Goats are curious creatures. They love to
explore anything new that they see in their surroundings. They can move easily and quickly. Goats are
well known for their ability to climb and balance in uncertain places. Goats have an important stand
precisely in the world of agriculture and animal husbandry. Raising goats have been, for many of
years now, a feasible form of livelihood especially for Filipinos working in farms. Some consider
raising goats as their ultimate source of income for their everyday needs. A certain range of dairy
products can be produced from its milk, including cheese, buttermilk, yogurt, sour cream, and the milk
itself as a beverage. In comparison with cow milk, goat milk contains less sugar (lactose), 134% more
potassium, 47% more vitamin A, 25% more vitamin B6, and 13% more calcium. Goat milk is also less
allergenic, easier to digest, naturally homogenized, and rarely causes lactose intolerance. Cows (Bos

Motive Of Revenge In Hamlet
Shakespeare s motive throughout the play Hamlet held many actions based on revenge. Revenge is
what shaped the book because characters close relatives were murdered and it was up to the characters
to give their dead loved ones justice. For example, Hamlet s father was killed by Hamlet s uncle,
Claudius, and Laertes father, whom was the father of Hamlet s love, was murdered by Hamlet
accidently. Hamlet was after Claudius and Laertes was going after Hamlet. So it s no surprise that this
play ended in a tragedy. Now was revenge a worthy goal? No, no it was not because revenge leads to
hatred between one another and causes a circle of revenge between characters. The thirst for revenge
started with Hamlet when he found out that his father was killed by his own uncle, King Claudius. The
ghost that appeared to be the late King said to Hamlet, So art thou to revenge, when thou shalt hear,
(1.5.12). Automatically, because this situation was between royalty, it is easy for royalty to get
revenge without any consequences. Hamlet was pressured to take on the task of avenging his father s
death because he was his father s only son, making it his responsibility. Manhood comes into play
because men in the past were always seen as stronger and masculine than woman, so as a son Hamlet
needed to fulfill that role. But revenge was not a worthy goal because it drove Hamlet insane. With the
need of revenge, Hamlet became selfish and in the process lost people he had attachments with

  • 2. Character Roles In Kate Chopin s The Awakening Kate Chopin s The Awakening certainly links in with Propp s character functions, although often Chopin seemed to play around with her characters, changing their functions as the novel evolved and so on. In the case of this novel, Propp s functions definitely aid our understanding of the mindset of both Chopin and her heroine, Edna. Chopin both incorporates and manipulates the concept of character functions. Several of the characters experience a change in their function as the novel goes on, with some falling under more than one heading. An interesting aspect of the novel is that the character functions can be observed differently by Edna, and by the reader. This adds to the experience and comprehension of the novel as we can view it from two mindsets. From early on, we are introduced to Léonce Pontellier as the villain . He is trapping Edna in a restrictive world; in a horrible stereotype. However, Mr. Pontellier as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For this reason, the reader may not view him as such, and may rather label him a victim. Léonce Pontellier is a villain because he assumes his wife will be the perfect housewife, like the women who idolized their children, worshipped their husbands, like Madame Ratignolle. Léonce is too old fashioned for Edna and is unable to satisfy all of her needs, and her expectations for her life. As is said in The Awakening, ...all declared that Mr. Pontellier was the best husband in the world (p 9). In some ways this is true, for a man of his time, Mr. Pontellier would have seemed the perfect husband; supporting the family, spending time with his children and caring for his wife. However, there are some moments of blatant sexism, such as his assuming that she would care for the children alone (p 6). This would be deemed unacceptable today, but using Mr. Pontellier as a medium, it helped me to understand the expectations of women in the late 19th century, which I found ... • 3. Debating The Evidence On Spanking Abby Straessle Psychology Lab 3 18 October 2017 Debating the Evidence on Spanking According to Smith (2012), spanking does not lead to immediate obedience. Alan Kazdin, a Yale University psychology professor and director of the Yale Parenting Center and Child Conduct Clinic, says spanking does not work and you cannot punish out these behaviors that you do not want. Spanking does not lead to long term obedience either. Graham Bermann (2008) says that physical punishment can work momentarily to stop problematic behavior because children are afraid of being hit, but it doesn t work in the long term and can make children more aggressive. There are three major negative outcomes that are correlated with spanking. First, physical punishment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The research on disciplinary spanking is misleading. There are three major criticisms of the research against spanking. The first is correlational which does not prove causation. All of the evidence against spanking has been based on correlations. Most of Gershoff and Grogan Kaylor s evidence is based on cross sectional correlations. These correlations only consider data collected during one time period without considering the previous state of the research participants. This kind of correlation technique superficially makes spanking appear to cause aggression since the children spanked more often are the children who were more aggressive during the same time period. This is a problem for research on spanking because there is no way to tell what came first in cross correlational research so there is no way to tell what affects what. Even if infrequent spanking is correlated with better outcomes than overly frequent spanking, that does not prove that zero spanking is best. Every child is different. There is not a certain amount of times a child can be spanked in order for them to change behavior. Only 4 of their 75 studies were limited to two open handed swats to the buttocks for child defiance. The other 71 studies lumped together all spanking regardless of how it was implemented and why it was used. Not all spanking is the same, some is stronger ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Egoism In Ayn Rand s Anthem In Ayn Rand s book Anthem, The character Equality 7 2521 also known as Prometheus ran into the uncharted forest after being told that his box of light was a sin to create because he now knew more than his brother s in the uncharted forest he found out that the golden one had followed him. Then the two uncovered homes from the unmentionable times. In the uncharted forest he discovered the unspeakable word Ego . Throughout the book he expressed traits of an Egoist. But in the book because prometheus had been in a dystopian society where they had to think of themselves and their brothers as a whole they were not allowed to think of themselves. So was Prometheus really a egoist? Or was it just his little bit of selfish coming out after not ever being allowed to think about himself? The sacred word is Ego. no one is allowed to speak this word in this dystopian society that Ayn Rand creates in the book Anthem. When Equality was young he saw a man being burned at the steak for discovering the unspeakable word from the unmentionable times. He said that the man being burned was not screaming out in pain or asking for it to stop but rather he was smiling at Equality. Equality said that it was like the man was trying to mouth the unspeakable word to Equality. The way that Ayn Rand had Equality describe the man it seemed that he was different then the rest of the people that Equality grew up with and knew. He seemed happier. As Equality grew up he felt different than the other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Single Camera Conventions A single camera production is the use one single camera to film all of the diverse shots. An advantage of single camera production is the flexibility with shots due to other cameras not being in the frame and also the low budget. On the other hand, single camera production comes with disadvantages such as being time consuming and difficult to consistently reposition; furthermore if the camera is damaged all work may be lost. Within this essay, I will be discussing the elements in which make up a single camera production along with indicating an understanding of the codes and conventions that relate to this area of media. • 6. Compare And Contrast Juir 3 And Juror 8 This play by Reginald Rose was very dramatic. In this courtroom, there was a case about a young man that is guilty or innocent of murdering his father. This case consisted of a group of twelve jurors. These twelve jurors had so much about themselves that was alike and in some ways they were all different. In this case, the juror 3 and juror 8 are very different. Juror 3 appears to be a very intolerant person also he is known as a bully. On the other hand juror, 8 is an open minded individual that always listens to someone before speaking his part in something. • 7. Dna Replication Essay Since we discovered that DNA is in the nucleus in every single cell, we re curious about how exactly DNA can be replicated in a way that can keep our identity, including our characteristics. This could be described after learning about DNA and its very individual characteristics, along with transcription and translation, which are the two steps of DNA replication. These steps can determine our characteristics, as well as our personalities. DNA is mostly made of adenine, thymine, guanine and cytosine. These all make hydrogen bonds, and that s only if it s connected to the correct base. An example of this would be when thymine connects to adenine and guanine connects to cytosine. Though, since this is mRNA being created, adenine would connect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The DNA helicase latches on to the DNA molecule, unzipping the double helix, letting enzymes break the hydrogen bonds that connect the base pairs. Also, complementary nucleotides that are floating around and about in the nucleus form hydrogen bonds according to their pairs: thymine to adenine and guanine to cytosine. Due to the hydrogen bonds being more breakable, the DNA is much easier to unzip for replication. In the cytoplasm you can also find tRNA. tRNA contains a 3 nucleic code on one side and on the other side, there s a special protein on the other. In the cytoplasm, mRNA attracts ribosomes that have a similar 3 letter code of tRNA. The amino acids from tRNA then bond with the mRNA, which then creates a protein chain when a start codon or Methionine is reached. This chain will eventually stop once the stop codon is reached. This will then create a completed protein. In conclusion, even through replication, we are still able to keep our characteristics due to the stationary and unchanging method of replication, which is where we keep the same genetic coding. With the steps of DNA replication, this determines our characteristics, along with our personalities. The more we continue the studying of genetics, we may one day be able to cure disorders before the person is even born or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Wilfred Owen s Poems On The Futility Of War Poems using strong poetic technique and devices are able to create a wide range of emotions from the readers. Wilfred Owen s poetry effectively uses these poetic techniques and devices to not only create unsettling images about war but to provide his opinion about war itself with the use of themes within his poem. The use of these themes explored Owen s ideas on the futility of war and can be seen in the poems: Anthem for Doomed Youth, Futility and The Next War. The poems provide unsettling images and belief of war through the treatment of death, barbaric nature of war and the futility of war. In majority of Owen s poem, he demonstrates the true image of war and the impact it has on the soldiers rather than masking it with the lies of pride ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The idea of the futility of war can be seen in the poem Strange Meeting, where the persona creates a scenario of two opposing soldiers having a conversation in Hell. The line, The pity of war, the pity war distilled uses repetition with the word pity to imply the pity that is felt for the soldiers that have died at war. The use of the word distilled is indicating how war is attracting the concentration of many people and that the soldiers are dying for pointless reasons, intensifying the pity felt on the soldiers. Futility of war is again demonstrated in Owen s poem, Futility, in the final stanza with the rhetorical question, Was it for this the clay grew tall? Owen use of imagery of clay grew tall is making a biblical reference to humans being made by clay and questioning was the creation of humankind futile due to the recurring inevitability of war and suffering. In the previous lines, Owen compares the sun with God and is desperate to bring his comrades back to life, Woke, once, the clays of a cold star The use of the oxymoron is Owen indicating that the sun is now weaker than it was previously. Owen is explaining how futile the sun was to provide life on Earth if it is unable to bring back the dead. The reference to a cold star is highlighting the life that was brought to Earth has now turned cold due to it being destroyed and killed from war. • 10. U.s. Japanese Government Policies Essay Introduction The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of a set of the recent Japanese government policies. Before China overtaking the second largest economy in the world in 2011, Japan has kept the position for several decades. However, after the housing bubbles burst in 1990s, Japan had economically struggled where it can no longer grow at such a substantial rate as previously. In fact, its economy had shrunk when other neigbouring economies, such as Taiwan and South Korea, had prospered. So Abe Shinzo was elected as the prime minister of Japan and he has tried to revive the economy under Abenomics; yet, its impacts on the real economy seem ineffective until recently. This is why I think it will be interesting to evaluate whether Abenomics was the best option for Japanese government for reviving the economy from the prolonged recession. Was Abenomics effective? Research questions are as follows: A) Were the uses of monetary and fiscal policies effective during recession in Japan? B) Will the structural reforms be effective solution for Japanese economy? I will examine the effectiveness of Abenomics by looking at the historical economic data in Japan from 1980 to 2015. In addition, I will introduce some of literatures and relevant books to support my view on Abenomics. Literature review Japan s lost decade Hayashi and Prescott (2002) conducted a study on Japan s lost decade to provide a new interpretation based on neoclassical growth model. ... These feelings are basically created by regular excessive trainings. Tools, including bull hook, electric pads, metal rods, and drugs, are used simultaneously in the training sessions. Elephants, despite their thick skins, are very sensitive in several parts, particularly under their chins, behind their ears, and around their eyes. Trainers would use these weaknesses, striking them with pointed bull hook, as their aces to control the elephants. Teeth of the animals are plunged with hammer, reducing the risks of trainers being bitten and make them more manageable. Drugs are injected and given to some of the animals, particularly to alter their moods and to stabilize them in desirable conditions. Collaborative learning refers to a group of students who work together to learn and understand a new skill. (Gallagher, 1999). The Social Development theory consists of four basic principles: 1. Children construct their knowledge 2. Development cannot be separated from its social context 3. Learning can lead to development 4. Language plays a central role in mental development (Gallagher, 1999). The first principle deals with the idea that children will actually talk it out to themselves, or use what Gallagher (1999) referred to as private speech . For example, if a problem arises that is too difficult for the child to understand, he/she may talk to him/herself to plan out the steps that they will take to solve the problem. (Gallagher, 1999). The second principle deals with the idea that cognitive development depends on the child s interaction with people and their culture to stimulate growth in the child s thought and behavior processes. (Keritsis, n.d.). The third principle centers around the idea Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) (Gallagher, 1999).; the zone of proximal development refers to a situation where a child has a problem that is too difficult for them to solve on by themselves; however, the child is able to solve the problem when given guidance and encouragement by someone who knows more about the problem the child is working on (More Knowledgeable Other ... • 16. Ethical Dilemmas In The True Story And Movie Lone Survivor Ethical dilemmas are common occurrences in the world, especially when it comes to war. They can create situations with very difficult decisions and unknown consequences. Due to the difficulty and necessity for a decision during an ethical dilemma, it is important for soldiers to understand what an ethical dilemma is, and how to proceed in making a decision during such an event. The true story and movie Lone Survivor provides an excellent example of an ethical dilemma and the potential consequences of each decision that could be made during the scenario. This paper will go over the ethical dilemma, the possible solutions and consequences of such a dilemma and the choice I would have committed to. The Lone Survivor is a story about four Navy SEALs who were dropped off in the Hindu Kush Mountains in order to conduct surveillance on and potentially kill or capture Ahmad Shah, a Taliban Leader (Sherconish, 2014). Unfortunately for the SEALs they were seen and compromised by three goat herders. The goat herders did not have any weapons on them and were quickly captured and tied up. Also one of the goat herders was a small male child. It was suspected that the goat herders had ties to the Taliban and would alert them given the chance. The ethical dilemma is when on such a high profile mission and compromised by a small group of civilians, what is the most ethical decision to make (Berg, 2013)? • 19. The Characteristics Of An Entrepreneur Our world is going through an entrepreneurial revolution. A lot of research has been carried in an attempt to define entrepreneurship while more and more people are being encouraged to become entrepreneurs. The following study based on the stream of literature and researches on entrepreneurship focuses on the concept of the entrepreneur and explore his background, his characteristics and the factors that influences entrepreneurship. The Entrepreneur: A definition Gartner (1990), while reviewing the theories of entrepreneurship notes that it is a complex concept with not even an agreed definition of its scope. Although attempts have been made as early as the eighteenth century to identify the role of the entrepreneur, opinions are still as diverse as they were. On one hand there are stereotypical characteristics of entrepreneurs like they are born leaders, optimists, charismatic, extremely self confident and they inspire people. On the other hand, anyone who works for himself or owns a business calls himself an entrepreneur. There have also been several debates to differentiate entrepreneurs from small business owners and managers (Schumpeter 1934). The word means different things to different people. After Jack became leader of his own tribe, everyone had a spear. Jack did this so the boys would feel that they were more powerful if they were part of his tribe. Close to the end of Lord of the Flies , Ralph learns from Samneric that Roger sharpened a stick at both ends. (p.211) This meant that they were going to do the same thing to Ralph, as they did with the Lord of the Flies cut his head off and place it on the stick. Ultimately, the spears divided the boys instead of bringing peace and unity to them. The log represents how the boys tried to be civilized by having assemblies, but they failed. In the beginning, Ralph would blow the conch, to call everyone to gather around and sit on the logs for the assemblies. After, when most of the kids had joined Jack s tribe, no one came to the assemblies. This was because every child got corrupted with Jack s thoughts and joined him, even though he was unsuccessful in creating a civilized community. Furthermore, the boys didn t care about rescue anymore. The boys started out as a utopian society, but ended up as a dystopian society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Avaya is a global leader in business communications systems. The company provides unified communications, contact centers, data solutions and related services directly and through its channel partners to leading businesses and organizations around the world (Avaya.com, 2011). Once this process has finished, the investment bank is paid a percentage of the sale as commission as well as fees for the underwriting process. Due to the discount of the IPO from the estimate of the market value, traditional IPOs normally trade much higher than the initial price (Clinton, 2011). Being a long used and well known process, traditional IPOs allow for more choices of underwriters. Using an investment bank with experience in traditional IPOs allows for the road show to give the high profile investors a greater idea of the value of the company, and since the allocation of shares is done during this process they can avoid over valuing the company. Nayantara Hensel writes that underwriters who do less than three IPOs a year will average a first day price increase of 10%. On the other hand Hensel also tells us that the average first day price increase for all traditional IPOs is 38%, meaning a loss in the potential capitol for the company. The investment bank underwriting for a traditional IPO normally gets a 7% underwriting fee of the amount earned or more, bringing the potential money lost to 45 50%. Auction Based IPO An auction based IPO uses the Internet to open a company s IPO stock for purchase to more potential investors. This process allows a company to spend less on their underwrite fees. The Christina Contreras Mr. Limon ERWC 01 March 2017 The Relevance of Neil Postman s Assertions in Today s Society: Huxley s Brave New World could be considered almost prophetic by many people today. It is alarmingly obvious how modern society is eerily similar to Huxley s novel with the constant demand for instant gratification encouraging unnatural changes. Neil Postman, a contemporary social critic, seems to have noticed this similarity as he has made very bold, very valid statements regarding the text and its relevance to our world today. This statement is strongly in support of those statements and will provide both support and counterargument in an effort to thoroughly explain why. Although Man Ray considered himself as a painter, starting from the late 1910s, he began his devotion to photography (The Art Institute of Chicago, 2017). In a friendly conversation, a few weeks ago she mentioned having Lyme disease. I grew up in a rural part of Indiana so my childhood consisted of playing outside almost everyday. My front yard is full of trees, and because I live in a very forested area right across from a corn field, these trees often have ticks. My parents always warned us to be cautious of ticks by using insect repellant and making sure we were wearing long clothing if we were going to be close to the trees. Our dogs would often get a tick here or there that my parents would have to pull off, but only once or twice do I remember one of my siblings or cousins getting a tick on them. My parents and grandparents always warned us about Lyme disease, because it was such a prevalent topic in Indiana. As a child, it seemed as if my parents were overreacting, which is why it was so interesting to see that Dana had gotten Lyme disease. • 30. Comparing Julius Caesar And Antony Octavian and Antony No contemporaries could have possibly known for sure as to who the victor would be from the conflict that arose between Gaius Julius Ceasar Octavianus, Octavian, and Marcus Antonius, Antony. However, knowing what the ultimate outcome of the struggle was, one may be able to look back into history and offer key reasons as to why Octavian was able to defeat Antony. Ultimately, I believe there was not one key reason for Octavian victory. It was a combination of Octavian s proximity to Rome, his favor with the citizens, and the elimination of his opposition at home that all combined to allow his eventual triumph. Overlooking some smaller details, it is first important to know that after Julius Ceasar s assassination that Octavian was named his heir and returned to Italy to claim this inheritance. From here, he gathered military power and allowed the senate to use him, in order to advance his political position, and he was sent to fight against a rebellious Antony. At this point, Octavian did not try to decimate Antony s forces, instead he proposed and ultimately formed the second triumvirate with Antony and Lepidus as the other heads of the state (Wells 13). From here, the Roman territories were divided into areas of governorship with Antony taking the east, Octavian the west, and Lepidus had the Africa territories (Wells 17). This would turn out to be one of the main contributing factors in Octavian s ultimate success; for it allowed him the opportunity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Motive Of Revenge In Hamlet Shakespeare s motive throughout the play Hamlet held many actions based on revenge. Revenge is what shaped the book because characters close relatives were murdered and it was up to the characters to give their dead loved ones justice. For example, Hamlet s father was killed by Hamlet s uncle, Claudius, and Laertes father, whom was the father of Hamlet s love, was murdered by Hamlet accidently. Hamlet was after Claudius and Laertes was going after Hamlet. So it s no surprise that this play ended in a tragedy. Now was revenge a worthy goal? No, no it was not because revenge leads to hatred between one another and causes a circle of revenge between characters. The thirst for revenge started with Hamlet when he found out that his father was killed by his own uncle, King Claudius. The ghost that appeared to be the late King said to Hamlet, So art thou to revenge, when thou shalt hear, (1.5.12). Automatically, because this situation was between royalty, it is easy for royalty to get revenge without any consequences. Hamlet was pressured to take on the task of avenging his father s death because he was his father s only son, making it his responsibility. Manhood comes into play because men in the past were always seen as stronger and masculine than woman, so as a son Hamlet needed to fulfill that role. But revenge was not a worthy goal because it drove Hamlet insane. With the need of revenge, Hamlet became selfish and in the process lost people he had attachments with ...
