More often than not, it is hard to face the consciousness of the inevitable. Everyone feels the
distress of realizing that time is fleeting and they will soon grow old and wrinkly, no longer their
youthful self. The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde, illustrates this human condition
specifically through the main character Dorian Gray. Mr. Gray captures the artistic imagination
of artist Basil Howard, who constantly paints portraits of Dorian. Basil usually depicts Dorian as
an ancient Greek hero or a mythological creature, but when he completes his first portrait of
Dorian for who he truly is he is disappointed because he feels as though this painting reveals too
much about his subject. Dorian on the other hand goes to the extreme when he sees this portrait.
Worrisome, Dorian believes that one day the portrait will remind him of his former beautiful and
young self. Out of anguish, he curses the portrait, ultimately selling his soul to spare himself of
the burdens of age and infamy, allowing him to stay forever young. In his novella, The Picture of

humor. Billy Pilgrim, whose name is a reference to John Bunyan s The Pilgrim s Progress and
connotes that Vonnegut s pilgrim is an average joe burdened with a life of agony and terror
(F1). His name is also in reference to Vonnegut s feeling that the Second World War was a war
fought by mere children, hence the book s subtitle The Children s Crusade. The idea of young
men who were no more than children in essence when they were sent off to fight and die in a
foreign land is a distressing and horrible idea for many people to think about. Yet through his

countries stayed with the gold system thinking they could patch up the gold standard, as it had
worked perfectly before World War I and it was still the most advanced economic policy to date,
so many countries stayed on the gold standard. What many countries didn t expect, which would
lead to the downfall of the gold standard, was World War II.
After World War II, the Bretton Woods Agreement established the gold standard and two support
institutions called the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. This would lead
to a shift, away from the gold standard, to more relaxed systems. The idea of currency purely
backed by gold was slowly being shifted to a trust based currency. These institutions purpose was
to regulate the economies by injecting or taking money in a process called sterilization.
Sterilization is to protect certain countries from a going bankrupt. If a country goes bankrupt, it
