Analysis Of We Real Cool
We Real Cool, by Gwendolyn Brooks is a lyrical poem that tells a story of teenage rebellion. Although
the poem is relatively short, it packs an extremely powerful message about youth. Gwendolyn Brooks
centered her works predominately around the African American consciousness. During the time in
which the poem was written, many teens, especially young African American men felt misunderstood
and like the world was set up for them to fail. At first glance, it appears this poem is a mere
description of misunderstood young adults who are enjoying their youth. However, with further
analysis, it is made clear that this poem talks about much more than that. While it is obvious that this
poem is about rebellious youths, it is also about self identity and the dangers of herd mentality. Herd
mentality describes how people follow and adapt the behaviors of certain groups. Herd mentality is in
no way new; moreover, most people are subject to its effects. However, herd mentality becomes
dangerous when a group has enough influence to dictate an individual s way of thinking. When an
individual is desperate to find a place to belong, they will most likely follow the crowd even if they
know that they are participating in something immoral; this can be seen in We Real Cool.
In the opening lines of the poem, the reader is introduced to the subjects The Pool Players. Seven at
the Golden Shovel (line 1 2), they are the we in the poem. It becomes apparent to the reader that the
speaker is one of the seven pool players mentioned.
The speakers tone in the poem is very prideful and defiant, but at the same time, it is filled with
uncertainty. This poem is a formal verse ballad which uses simple sentences that have a steady meter
that gives the poem a jazz like quality to the poem which further emphasizes the speaker s nonchalant
attitude and their disdain for the establishment.
The speaker contempt for the system is shown in the line We real cool. We Left school. (line3 4) The
speaker feels misunderstood by society and yearns to find a place for themselves in the world. The
danger in this is that the speaker of a poem gives up on conventional means of education in search for
a place where they can belong, which

Manager Interview Essay
I chose to interview Regina Geis, who holds the administrative role as acting supervisor for the
County Mental Health adult day program, which provides services for individuals with intellectual
disabilities. Ms. Geis has held this position for 15 months. This is her first managerial position within
a human service agency. Her style of management has changed over this short period of time. She
feels that she is now more direct with her direction with staff. She stated, Maybe now I come across as
a little bit cold. But I have learned that I now have to use the least amount of words to get my point
across.

She replied with Linear like Dr. Sprague (agency CEO).
Ms. Geis feels that the communication skills that one must possess in order to make advancements in
management are that one must be an effective communicator, know the work environment, and the
people you work with.
Edmondson (2009) discusses four different basic communication styles. The first style is expressive
which have a tendency to speak quickly, focus on the big picture, and have a high energy level. They
can be perceived as unpredictable, vain, or excessively jovial. Next are systematic who tend to focus
on small details, not on the larger picture, and try to avoid conflicts. The third type listed is
sympathetic. These individuals focus on people and relationships. They are good listeners and so
concern for everyone s needs. Sympathetics also do not like be at odds with others. Lastly, the fourth
communication style identified is directs who generally keep dialogue short and are perceived as a
multitaskers. The study recommends that the individual discover her own communication style and
adjust the style according to the situation.
Grant and Taylor (2014) conducted a study which identified six essential communication traits that
can aid women to demonstrate confidence: (1) starting strong, (2) staying succinct, (3)
dimensionalizing content, (4) owning voice, (5) controlling movement, and (6) projecting warmth (p.

New York City Club Sociology
The movie s backdrop is New York City, and revolves around Sofia Lin, who is married to a man
named Rob. They appear to have a very sexually satisfying relationship. Sofia works as a couple s
counselor/sex therapist, and introduced to James and Jaime. They have been dating for some time, and
feel they have reached an impasse. Jaime suggested that they open up their relationship to sex with
others. Sofia snaps and reacts by slapping Jaime, and then quickly apologizes for her outburst. She
attempts to explain her behavior by disclosing she s pre orgasmic , and the men suggest she attend a
club called shortbus . The club is inclusive to all various sexual preferences and a viable environment
where Sofia is able to explore her sexual issues. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although it was brief, I have had the opportunity to meet with individuals who have had to work
within the sex industry, and learn the genesis of when it started. The film also made me realize that I
have much work to do on the way I express my curiosity towards other lifestyles. When Sofia was in
the shortbus , I kept laughing at the horrified look on her face because I could absolutely see myself
doing that. I appreciate people s sexual liberations, but the idea of having sex so openly is baffling. I
m almost envious of that sort of freedom, and believe that feeling would help me build rapport with
clients who choose to do so. Self disclosing my admiration would provide a sense of unconditional
regard I hope all my clients would feel. The film also reaffirmed that my comfort level working with
LGBT clients remains the same until I m given the chance to attain more real life experience. I was
initially curious how James and Jaime were going to react with a married non gay female therapist,
but they obviously responded well to her (besides the slap). The thought that she was Asian American
came to mind as to why they responded to her so quickly, because Asian Americans are also
considered to be an oppressed group. Then of course I wondered if they would have been as quickly to

The Impact Of Industrialization On Society During The...
Examine in detail the History of the Industrial Revolution. Discuss why Britain led the way in the
Industrial Revolution and also explain in detail the effects of industrialization on society.
Had it not been for the industrial revolution, I would doubt very much that we would enjoy the
technology we have in the year 2000. The reason we have this technology is that between the years
1750 and 1914 a great change in the world s history was made. People started to discover faster
methods of producing goods, which increased their economy. These people were mainly British and
French, but after a few years the French were distracted by their revolution, and the British continued
to industrialize. However you must not think this industrialization had no effects on society because it
did. So in this essay I am going to talk about the history of the industrial revolution, discuss why
Britain led the way in the industrial revolution and also I am going to explain to you in detail the
effects of industrialization on society.
In the midevel ages people were living in total darkness, and they did not know what was going on in
the world around them. Happily the medieval ages were followed by the renaissance. Then came the
year 1750, the year of the agricultural revolution in Britain which led away to a revolution in industry.
Charles Townshend for example was one of the people who made the agricultural revolution possible.
He suggested rotating the crops every year or two, to help

The Rising Health Anxieties For The United States
The continuous rising health anxieties for the United States, adolescence is the increasing rate of
teenagers that are going through an outburst with diverse sexual transmitted diseases. Sexually
transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections that you can get from having sexual intercourse with
someone who has the infection(s) and or are creating one through that exposing period. The causes of
STDs are surrounded by multiple bacteria, parasites and viruses invading the areas used during
intercourse, such as oral, anal and through regular sexual encounters. There are more than 20 types of
STDs (Nursingceu), including the following: Hepatitis, Chlamydia, Herpes, Scabies, Syphilis,

Teen sexual health standpoints must be lifted to lodge the up to date compressions, myths, and the
realities of the pressures and dangerous outcomes that the new generation is facing or if misinformed
will soon face, in the relations of beginning to be sexually active and living a healthy and cautious
sexual life in order to protect the teens from continuing to see high rates of STD reduction and
transmission. The youth today may not see that infections and diseases are carried through the people
they may surround themselves with. Not only can people get these illnesses through sexual
encounters, but also through person to person contact. Infectious diseases are those that are
transmitted from person to person by direct or indirect contact. Viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi
all cause infectious disease. Malaria, measles, and respiratory illnesses are examples of infectious
diseases. (Health Line) It is important for the youth to receive notice of these facts. Parents do not
really give much of a talk when it comes to this subject, because they feel since their children have
health class they ll learn everything they need to learn through there. Health class does cover some
minor cautionary risks to diseases, but do not give the information that needs to be conducted towards
their classrooms. Sex education should be considered to be a required class during their freshman year.

Supreme Court Precedents
Throughout the history of the United States, the Supreme Court has decided the interpretation of the
Constitution, the Supreme Law of the Land. They have settled many cases and set many precedents
that have changed life in America since its inception. It was the Supreme Court who protected the
freedom of speech when a man tried to burn the flag. It was the Supreme Court who decided that a
person could not be forced to recite the pledge of allegiance if it went against their religion. And it was
the Supreme Court who decided that a free citizen of the United States couldn t be kept from a public
school because of his or her race. The Supreme Courts decision in the landmark case Brown vs Board

Thirteen years later, in 1896, a new case appeared that would set a precedent for racial discrimination
for years to come, and ultimately, drive a nigh irremovable wedge between the blacks and the whites
in the south. The case in question arose when a seven eigths caucasian man, Homer Adolph Plessy,
broke a Lousiana law barring black people from sitting in certain train cars. Upon refusing to move,
Plessy was arrested and brought to court where the case made its way up through district and appellate
courts and all the way to the Supreme Court. The question, posed by this case was: is the Louisiana
law mandating racial segregation on trains unconstitutional under the fourteenth amendment? The
court decided, in a seven to one decision written by Justice Brown, that the different train cars for
blacks and whites weren t a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment. In his conclusion, Justice Brown
wrote that the Fourteenth Amendment was intended to provide complete equality for all races before
the law. However, he said, it is not intended to eradicate racial distinctions, and enforce social equality,
nor is it an attempt to force a collusion of races. This conclusion gave rise to the infamous Separate
but Equal Doctrine, a precedent that is a direct cause of Brown vs Board of Education. Though it was
not stated in Brown s conclusion, this doctrine insinuated that so

After a Time and Stairway to Heaven
Poetry Essay
Thesis: Catherine Davis After a Time and Robert Plant s Stairway to Heaven performed by Led
Zepplin both focus on death and rebirth, the fact that no matter what we possess, we can t change this.
First supporting point: After A Time establishes a deliberate dark, dismal tone, leading us to see that
eventually the healing will begin. In Davis s poem first
After a time, all losses are the same. One more thing lost is one thing less to lose;
And we go stripped at last the way we came. (First stanza)
Second supporting point: Davis uses figurative language to show the inevitability of death.
The sense of treachery the want, the blame
Goes in the end, whether or not we choose,
And we go stripped at last the way we came. (Fifth stanza)
Third supporting point: However, in the end, Davis shows us that no possessions and
accomplishments will keep us from death or loss. That we will have no lifes simplier things and that
these things brings joy far more than the material possessions can.
So we, who would go raging, will go tame When what we have can no longer use: After a time, all
losses are the same; And we go stripped at last the way we came. (Sixth Stanza)
Most of the times we take it for granted that there is always plenty of time.
Fourth supporting point: Robert Plant s Stairway to Heaven sees life as a mystical journey and a
spiritual quest, but one can not buy happiness on his or her way to heaven. If there s a bustle in your

The Use Of Bioactive Restorative Materials With A...
Extensive research has been taking place in generating bioactive restorative materials with a potential
for remineralization. [1] Bioactivity refers to apatite forming ability [2] while biomineralization is the
ability to get anchored to the underlying dentin by the formation of a mineral rich interfacial layer and
a tag like structure extending from the interfacial layer to the dentinal tubules. [3] Biodentine TM
(BD) (Septodont, Saint Maur des Fossιs, Creteil, France) and TheraCal LC TM (Bisco Inc,
Schamburg, IL, USA) are calcium silicate based bioactive liners that are proposed as alternatives to
glass ionomers (GIs).
The use of bioactive liners beneath resin composite (RC) would clinically be more advantageous than
using GI liners as they are biologically well tolerated by the pulp tissue [4] and have comparatively
higher remineralizing ability. [5] The success of these laminate restorations depend not only on the
bond strength of the liner to the dentin but also on the quality of bond between liner and overlying RC.
Various studies suggest the application of resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) instead of
GI in the sandwich technique because of improved bond strength to RC due to its chemical bonding.
[6],[7] The bond strength of RMGIC to RC varies depending on the type of adhesive used and it has
been proved that self etch is better than total etch. [8]
Biodentine TM (BD) is recently being used as a dentin replacement material under composite
restorations.

Fear of Polio in the 1950s Essay examples
Fear of Polio in the 1950s Paralytic poliomyelitis, polio , held a reign of terror over this nation for
decades. But unless you were born before 1955, polio may seem to be just another ephemeral disease
that has been nonexistent for years. Those born before 1955 remember having a great fear of this
horrible disease which crippled thousands of once active, healthy children. This disease had no cure
and no identified causes, which made it all the more terrifying. People did everything that they had
done in the past to prevent the spread of disease, such as quarantining areas, but these tactics never
seemed to work. Polio could not be contained. Many people did not have the money to care for a
family member with polio. This was one of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In an attempt to control the disease, bewildered health officials reinstituted the usual rules of sanitation
which they would later learn had worsened the threat of polio. They advised against open drains and
unscreened windows. Parents were instructed to keep their children well bathed, well rested, well fed,
and away from crowds. Bathing suits were locked away in closets, and nobody went to the public
pools. When polio struck, movie theaters were shut, camps and schools were closed, drinking
fountains were abandoned, draft inductions suspended, and nonessential meetings were canceled until
the epidemic appeared to be over for the time being.[1] These precautions were harmless, but not
particularly helpful. In the past, these precautions proved very effective in stopping the spread of
diseases such as influenza and plague. For three decades now, people still did not know why they were
getting their disease. And for three decades now, doctors, epidemiologists, and laboratory researchers
were trying to figure out how the disease was spread.[2] Nobody has ever discovered completely how
it is that polio is spread. The best evidence suggests that the virus is excreted in the stool and passed
through hand to hand or hand to mouth contact by people who do not wash their hands properly or
often enough. It was during the first few years of the fifties and many years before then, that health

Research Paper The Sun Also Rises and the Great Gatsby are both very interesting books written in
the 1920 s. The characters of Lady Brett Ashley and Daisy Buchanan also influenced many women in
that time period on how they acted, dressed, and the choices they made in their everyday life s. Lady
Brett Ashley is a very tart character. She goes after men and has sex with them and then they provide
everything for her. She is probably the most unsympathic character in the whole story. She uses men

David Wesley s Five Healthy Patterns

Newsboys In The 1800 s
Despite the major setback of being part of the youth population in the late 1800 s, the Newsboys

time, the Newsies proved they weren t budging in their stance. Through holding their ground and
unmasking their will and determination, the companies gave into their requests and even left a

The road to fair and equal child labor laws was definitely not an easy one, nor was it a quick one.

Working from dawn to dusk, the boys would be the first in line to purchase a stack of 100 newspapers

Sometimes this meant cheating their customers into feeling sympathetic for them, or taking more

The Feminine Mystique Analysis
Both the Victorian Era and 1950s and 1960s America featured inflexible expectations of a wife and
her views on marriage. Grant Allen, a Victorian essayist, in Plain Words on the Women Question in
1889, wrote, We ought frankly to recognize that most women must be wives and mothers: that most
women should therefore be trained, physically, morally, socially, and mentally, in the way best fitting
for them to be wives and mothers (Broadview Anthology 628). Essentially, Allen holds the belief that
all women are meant to serve as an asset to men, to complement men. Additionally, his use of the
word train connotes that women should be disciplined to fit this role, which betrays the lack of
equality between the sexes. He further argues that it goes against nature for women to desire more
than motherhood and wifehood. He chastises women who attempt to oppose their duty, instead of
boasting of their sexlessness as a matter of pride, they ought to keep it in the dark, and to be ashamed
of it (628). In other words, to be feminine is to mother children and to marry a man. Deviating from
this neatly structured plan for a woman s obligation is to become unfeminine. In America, Betty
Friedan, a feminist writer, wrote The Feminine Mystique in 1963. In her book, she rebels against the
traditional view of femininity. She coined the term which shares the title of her book as, The feminine
mystique says that the highest value and the only commitment for women is the fulfillment of

New York Stock Exchange Essay
On May 17, 1792 24 stock brokers signed the Buttonwood Agreement on Wall Street in New York
City under a Buttonwood tree. The agreement formed a centralized exchange that eliminated the need
for auctioneers. It also set up rules for the trading of public bonds that were used to pay for the
American Revolution. In 1817, a formal organization was setup and named the New York Stock
Exchange Board. In 1863 it was renamed the New York Stock Exchange and in 1903 it moved to its
present headquarters at 18 Broad Street. During the 19th century, most of the things traded in the
Stock Exchange were government bonds. Few corporations were in existence during this time but they
were primarily banks that people could buy and sell stocks. Over the centuries more companies joined
the exchange with the railroad industry dominating the market through the 20th century. The invention

Kurt Cobain Documentary Essay
Is It Possible To Accurately Represent Reality In Film?
...It matters very little what the facts are; what matters is what people believe. And when it comes to
Cobain, most of what they believe is fabricated nonsense.
Buzz Osborne, Melvins
Documentaries are often assumed to be credible and filled with factual information; they do, after all,
document reality. This is not always the case though. There are many factors that determine the
reliability of documentaries: the editing, the director s agenda, the film s style, confirmation bias, and
choice of interviewees, among other things. Documentaries are a representative medium, after all, and
although they are able to give audiences insight into people and events that they were not able to
experience first hand, there is much ambiguity surrounding the truthfulness of non fiction film. While
it may be possible to inform and persuade people through film, it will never be able to accurately
represent reality. By comparing two documentaries about Nirvana s Kurt Cobain, it will become
apparent that there is still a blurred line between what is fiction and what is not.

A Short Note On The E Commerce Market
1. Critically analyze the factors that led to Alibaba sustaining its leadership position in the Chinese e
commerce market. During the late 1990 s and early 2000 s, the internet was not very popular in China
and people were ignorant to its proper use. Knowing this, Jack Ma decided to start this internet user
friendly company that would allow his clients to perform business transactions with other
businesses/suppliers in China. He first started the company on a local level and as Alibaba has seen
success it has been expanding to the global market. Some of the factors that contributed to the success
of Alibaba in the Chinese e commerce industry were:
First mover advantage: Alibaba has a first mover advantage that makes it very hard for competitors to
chip away at their lead in the market. (Dick Wei, Analyst, J.P. Morgan Securities Inc.,2 in 2007).
Alibaba started its operations when e commerce in China was in its infancy stage. Considering the
potential of the budding e commerce market, Alibaba started with operations that concentrated on
providing B2B services to SMEs that were aspiring to go global.
Smart competitive and marketing strategies: From an early stage, Alibaba had been focusing on
differentiating itself by providing better services to its customer. It put an innovative business model
in place where customers could try out its services without any cost. Over time, it was able to generate

Renaissance Influence On The Historical And Social...
Renaissance Influence on the Historical and Social Significance of Self Portraiture During the
Renaissance, artists were acquiring status and the technical means to create a new genre of art called
self portraiture (Bond). Portraits are defined as having a likeness of a specific individual (Adams).
However, self portraits do not only have a likeness of the artist but also a sense of psychology that
connects the viewer to the artist. This connection gives the self portrait a depth of complexity that
even portraits do not always achieve. Following the development of self portraiture, one must
transverse the development of portraiture. Then one must follow self portraits connection to
portraiture and self portraits own unique development. Then one must recognize the influence of the
society on the value of the artist and their artworks. In order to understand the significance of the
development of self portraiture, one must have some familiarity with the history of portraiture and its
development as a whole. Portraiture is a facet of the artistic community that retains a deep history
from multiple ancient cultures. In Ancient Egyptian, around fifteen thousand B.C., artists carved out
portraits, mostly of the pharaohs. Also, many of the portraits created were meant to reside in the
patron s tomb upon his or her death. These portraits or funerary statues provided a physical form for
the spirit to use in the afterlife (Walker, Appendix 1). Around two hundred B.C., Romans seemed

There are various questions that have arisen regarding the introduction of driverless vehicles, its

automakers have announced the emergence of driverless vehicles that boost of the functionality
without any need of drivers (Chopra). The driverless vehicles are fully autonomous cars that can not

The autonomous cars would also reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide, that was previously
estimated as 300 million tons every year. Because the autonomous cars will do most of the things
related to driving, so the passenger or driver can make out for most of the time in the vehicle (Lane).
Due to the reduction in traffic congestion, it would also be easy to reach the destination from the
source within less time. Thus, it could be understood that driverless vehicles would nearly save 1
billion hours once the autonomous cars would be available in the road. There would be increase in
safety and lesser traffic as well, which could determine the optimum road to reach the destination as
well as spread the demand for empty or lack of space in roads (David 62 71).
Addressing the opposite side
Though there are various benefits, there are few risks associated with the driverless cars too such as
failure of sensor that can make the brakes of the cars fail, cyber attacks and failure or inaccurate
functioning of the software used in the vehicles. The insurances related to motor would not be able to
insure the drivers, rather could insure the risks that were related to the driverless cars. While making

maiden voyage in an attempt to provide answers to the age old question that titles his article, What
Really Sank the Titanic? . Gannon begins the article by explaining various details of the well known
story of the Titanic s trip in April of 1912. The readers are reminded that the massive vessel was
considered unsinkable and disaster proof prior to its first trip at sea. After crashing into a large iceberg,
a few of the hull s compartments were destroyed and the ship quickly began to take on water. The
entire vessel sank in three short hours, and the exact causes of the disaster are still not fully
understood.

The Case Of Alfie And Peggy
The fundamental issue in the case of Alfie and Peggy is whether the items in question are a part of the
land (fixtures) that can be acquired by Alfie in the convenyancing process, or whether they are an item
of personal property (chattels) that belong in the hands of the seller Peggy . According to the Latin
maxim quicquid plantatur solo, solo cedid # , Alfie can claim ownership rights to the items in
question, if they are attached to the soil of the land. In other words, the items must all be fixtures
rather than chattels, for Alfie to seek ownership.
At face value, if an item is physically attached or annexed to the land, it is regarded as a fixture. It
could be argued that the antique mirror in the Queen Victoria is therefore a fixture, as it has been
screwed into a part of the land, meaning Alfie can make a claim of ownership to it. However, physical
attachment of an item is not enough to prove its fixture status. The degree of attachment, as described
by Lord Lloyd in Elitestone Ltd v Morris#, is also important in determining whether an item is a
fixture. For a fixture to exist, the level of attachment must be high. It could be argued that the action of
screwing a mirror into the walls of the Queen Victoria is indeed a very high level of attachment, and
even though items like the mirror may be easy to remove, as proven in Holland v Hodgson#, these
items are still fixtures because of the scale of their attachment. The level of the attachment and the

If you were in a horrible situation, what would you do?
You should always be positive no matter what situation you are in. Like Anne Frank when she was in

brighter side of things was Winston Churchill. While the Axis powers were taking over Europe
Churchill kept Great Britain hopeful and calm. Anne Frank is well known for her diary which held the

her words ¨It may be damp and lopsided, but there s probably not a more comfortable hiding place in

Juvenile Justice And The Juvenile Court System
Placing a juvenile in a detention center early in the court process increases the risk that youths will be
found to be delinquent and damage their prospects for future success. A majority of the youths that are
placed in these facilities pose little or no threat to the public and essentially do not need to be there.
This portion of the juvenile court process is detrimental to the future and mental aspects of a youth s
life. We desperately need to change the way that we handle the juvenile court system because we are
only reinforcing the delinquent behavior that these youths have been exposed to. We need to focus on
the rehabilitation and prevention efforts for these youths not the punishment aspect and until then
(insert a better ending). The state juvenile corrections systems in the U.S. detain youth in several
different types of facilities such as, group homes, residential treatment centers, wilderness programs,
boot camps, country run youth facilities, and some of these are locked or secured through staff.
Richard Mendel stated (2012), The latest official national count of youth in correctional custody,
conducted in 2010, found that roughly 48,000 U.S. youth were confined in correctional facilities or
other residential programs each night on the order of a juvenile delinquency court (p 1). This amount
of juveniles in these facilities is roughly the same amount of adolescents that live in cities like
Louisville, Kentucky or Portland Oregon. America relies heavily on

This means that when the user is searching for a specific page through a search engine such as Google,
they will be able to find what they are looking for swiftly and will not have to search through other
pages to find what they want. This means that meta tags allow better navigation and accessibility to
information for users.
Meta tagging can be used in order to aid user access to information, as it helps people find the website
based on the topic of information. This is done effectively when all of the keywords are included in
the meta data when the website is being built. For example, when a website is being designed to
promote itself such as a cricket club, words in relation to the club would be used such as cricket,
batsman, sponsor, club name etc. these words would all be included within the meta rage because
these words are related to the topic of the page and would therefore allow people to find the website
and its information a lot more quicker and easily.
Meta tagging is necessary for aiding users to find a website and being able to access the information
that it contains. Meta tagging makes finding websites a lot easier because you do not need to know the
specific URL of the web page that you are trying to search for. This is due to the fact that the user can
use the information that is already provided to them in order to find a link to that webpage that they
are searching for. This will make navigating on the internet a easier

After the end of World War II, the world was left with the two global Superpowers, the U.S and the
the Soviet Union. Having completely contradicting government ideologies, these two countries
desperately fought each other over foreign influence, inspiring what is known as the Cold War. Named
for it s lack of military action, the Cold War was hardly a war at all but more an arms race between
American democracy and Russian Communism. Though it never felt the heat of battle, this altercation

These missiles were a critical product of the Cold War itself. Following the introduction of the IBM s,
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles coined the policy known as Massive retaliation , dictating that
any major Soviet attack would be met with a massive nuclear response. Inspired by fear and skeptical
assumptions of what the Soviet Union could do, this policy in turn acted as an empty unneeded form
of retaliation, attempting to discourage any possible Soviet Union capitalization. But, after all these
threats, Dulles acts upon this assumption declaring that the United States will protect its allies through
the deterrent of massive retaliatory power. The policy announcement was further evidence of the
Eisenhower administration s decision to rely heavily on the nation s nuclear arsenal as the primary
means of defense against communist aggression, ( Dulles Announces Policy of massive Retaliation ).
Later, in the 1960 s, the strategic doctrine known as Mutually Assured Destruction was developed as a

Why An Individual Can Have A Bad Credit Score
Ways to start rebuilding your credit score
There are many reasons why an individual can have a bad credit rating. Common reasons include a
loss of employment , medical bills and a divorce. Whatever the reasons are in your life, if you have
gone through a period of time in your life that has left you with a bad credit rating, there are several
things you can do to begin to build your credit rating back up.
First understand the major factors used to calculate credit ratings
Although there are different ways a lender will calculate a credit score, the basic credit score that
people use is called a FICO score, and this is developed from four criteria. One is payment history.
This is followed by your credit to debt ratio, and the final two are the length of your credit history as
well as the type of credit you have. In order to build up a better credit rating, you will need to address
issues that relate to these four factors.
Look at your credit report
The first thing you need to do is look at your credit report. There is really nothing stopping you from
doing this because your can get a Free Credit Report. Once you get your report, you need to sit down
and look at it carefully. There are, however, three credit agencies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.
It is possible that your credit report could be different from one agency to the other. This is because
not every lender reports to all three agencies, but even when they show differences, overall, they will

Ethnic Underachievement In Education Essay
The British education system acts as an agent of secondary socialisation which delivers pupils with the
norms and values of society. The focus on ethnic differences in achievement has been prominent in
recent years as there has been a consistency of black underachievement and black exclusions from
education, which has evoked numerous explanations as to why this pattern continuously occurs.
The DFES 2006 reports that only 39% of Black pupils achieve 5+ A* C GCSE grades which denotes
that Black boys are among the lowest achievers at secondary school level compared to pupils from
ethnic minority groups. The DFES additionally reports that Nationally, African Caribbean pupils are
nearly three times more likely to be excluded from school as white pupils, with more than 84% of
permanent exclusions being boys (DfES 2006). Diane Abbott, a London member of Parliament (2002)

British children due to the increasing number of black pupils being permanently excluded from

FUNKY SUNGLASSES the accessory that s always been practical and fashionable
The earliest historical reference to sunglasses dates back to ancient China and Rome. The Roman
emperor Nero watched gladiator fights through polished gems. In China, sunglasses were used in the
12th century or possibly earlier. These sunglasses were made out of lenses that were flat panes of
smoky quartz. They offered no corrective powers nor did they protect from harmful UV rays, but did
protect the eyes from glare.
In prehistoric and historic time, members of various Eskimoan peoples wore flattened walrus ivory
glasses, looking through narrow slits to block harmful reflected rays of the sun.
Modern civilization began experimenting with tinted lenses in spectacles around 1752. There was
belief that blue or green tinted glass could potentially correct specific vision impairments. Protection
from the sun s rays was not a concern at this time. Glasses tinted with yellow amber and brown were
also a commonly prescribed item for people with syphilis in the 19th and early 20th century because
one of the symptoms of the disease was sensitivity to light.
In the early 1900s sunglasses became more widespread, especially among movie stars. Famous

Although they are speaking metaphorically it is clear what each of them are referring to. Her face is
serene , the apology sex Stella and Stanley have leaves the glow on her face. Her attitude implies that
she has completely forgotten about the abuse the night before. Stella s own sexual desires blind her
from seeing the truth about her husband, an abusive animal. A sky of summer brilliance , the pathetic
fallacy in the scene reflects Stella s blushing mood which only reinforces how her lust has made her to
forget the cruelty she induced. Almost narcotized tranquillity this metaphor of her appearance suggest
that her sexual desire is like a drug. The comparison of drugs and sex is made again when Blanche
says your fix is worse than mine which shows how sexual desire is like an addiction for both sisters.
The force of desire drives Stella to abandon herself and her integrity to her passion for

Military Doctrine Defines Logistics As The Science Of...
Military doctrine defines logistics as the science of planning and carrying out the movement and
maintenance of forces .1 Logistics is the applied art of moving armies and providing for the provision
of support to keep that army moving or in location. It is a continuous and never ending operation. For
the purposes of this paper it may be taken that a focus on the art of sustainment that is, the actual
process of maintaining an army during operations, with a smaller focus on the administrative side.
Some parts of the administration side will not be looked at in this paper, these include record keeping,

What was the available transport by land, river or sea? What was the length, security and nature of
communication lines? However, this biggest questions were concerned with the welfare of the soldier,
what were they going to eat? What weapons were available? How were they going to be cared for?
These were the questions that if not dealt with appropriately would rapidly decrease the effectiveness
of the army.1
First of all, the most important part of logistics, the sustenance and hydration of the soldiers needs to
be considered. In short what were they going to eat and drink throughout the campaign? The methods
changed quite notably throughout the time period, this having some relationship to the size of armies,
although this will be covered at a later time. The first method of both feeding the army and drawing
the enemy from their fortifications was the chevauchee, essentially an armed raid, typified by pillage,
burning, rape and murder, essentially destroying everything in its path. An example of this would be
Edward III, who ravaged France, both surviving in enemy territory and also compelling Phillip to fight
in open combat. The chevauchee can be seen as an effective form of feeding small armies, however
any great army would have trouble acquiring the sheer amount necessary for its survival.
Following the decline of the chevauchee and an increase in army

Screen Time s Negative Effects On Children
Screen Time
There are around seventy five million children in the United States as of 2016. The population of
children and the estimated amount of time they spend looking at a screen is a tremendous one. On
average children thirteen to eighteen years old spend around nine hours looking at a screen. Children
that ages range from eight to twelve years old spend around six hours looking at a screen (Shapiro 1).
But is it all that bad according to a study done by OECD the Organization for Economic Co operation

playing these games are social, health, and learning skills even those nasty shooting games the news

so if someone is stressing out on things someone can hand them a Ipod or Iphone playing a harmless
game. These games help improve reaction time as well. They can also improve social skills too. Most
kids nowadays that play game are more social than people who don t. So the screens don t always take

The Courage to Differ Essay example
Life has many instances in which one must choose whether to stand apart from the group and disagree
with his peers or to nod vehemently in agreement and quickly seek security as a part of the group.
Many choose to follow the crowd because of the fear of rejection. They hang tightly to the bumper of
the car of acceptance not worrying of the cuts and scrapes they are suffering as they struggle to hold
on. Others painfully watch the car drive over the horizon and reassure themselves continually that it
was worth it to stay behind. When we are older and look upon our past, we will realize that the
courage to dissent or assent during our lifetimes can cause us either regret or contentment.
The effects of being swayed into assent along with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Meanwhile a boy confidently stepped into the chambers of the king and boldly said to the king Let no
man s heart fail because of him; your servant will go out and fight with this Philistine (Holy Bible, 1
Sam. 17. 32). The king rolled his eyes and muttered something under his breath. He looked the boy up
and down. The boy was scrawny and small and no match for the giant they were fighting. Surprised
and amused by the boy s matter of fact attitude the king responded You are not able to go against this
Philistine to fight with him; for you are a youth and he a man of war from his youth (Holy Bible 1
Sam. 17. 33) At much insisting the king agreed to let the boy fight and dressed him in the armor of a
warrior but the boy refused to wear it as it was too big for him. His brothers ridiculed him and told
him to go home. As he walked by the cowardly soldiers he shrugged off put downs thrown at him
from left and right. The boy persisted and walked towards the giant and defeated him in the name of
Israel s god. He had done it! He decided to go against the masses, to defy the pleading and ridiculing
of peers, and to suffer the insults hurled at him so he could stand for what he believed in. Casting
popular opinion aside he chose to continue his walk in dissent but in pride and victory. The young boy
of this story is named David. David became Israel s greatest leader and warrior

Explain The Key Ideas Of Macbeth
The key ideas of my appropriation for Macbeth would include power and ambition. This would
communicate the key ideas of shakespeare to the audience as many of his plays would consist of
tragedy and frequent death as the cost for something positive that would happen in this case it would
be that Macbeth sought out careless power without looking onto the consequences that would ensue
the near future being blinded by his own ambition and lust for power. These key ideas are relayed in
the original play as Macbeth s ambition was fueled by his wife Lady Macbeth though in my own
version of the play Macbeth Donahue has a self fueled ego(ambition) and lust for power as shown
once the opportunity to kill the Capo Di Tutti Capi of Chicago had revealed

American Satire Examples Of Satire
In the Netflix mockumentary series, American Vandal, created by Dan Perrault, the main character
Dylan Maxwell, an 18 year old senior at Hanover High School was held responsible for performing
vandalism on 27 cars causing $100K worth of disfiguring. Everybody believed that Dylan was in
charge of the destruction, despite the fact that he claimed innocence. Instead, they thought Alex
Trimboli, the eyewitness, Ms Shapiro, the Spanish teacher and everyone else that claimed he was
behind the vandalism were speaking the truth. They put Dylan as the prime suspect based on his past
with Ms Shapiro and furthermore because they believed he was capable of committing such crime.
The examples of satire that the creators used were humour, exaggeration and irony. A diversion was
utilised to make the show enjoyable for young people, yet with the use of satire, they could influence
teenagers to appreciate the show while accepting a genuine message about how a false allegation
against anyone could destroy their lives. Many of the people in the show were biased against
rebellious teenagers which was something that Dylan was known for being. In the mockumentary,
Dylan Maxwell was accused based off his image, his past, as well as his lifestyle. A significant
number of the students that were requested to share their opinion said that what Dylan had to state did
not make a difference since he was imbecilic and so forth. The thesis of the show is never to prejudge
a person based on their past.

Daniel Deronda Essay
Daniel Deronda
Daniel Deronda, the final novel published by George Eliot, was also her most controversial. Most of
Eliot s prior novels dealt largely with provincial English life but in her final novel Eliot introduced a
storyline for which she was both praised and disparaged. The novel deals not only with the coming of
age of Gwendolyn Harleth, a young English woman, but also with Daniel Deronda s discovery of his
Jewish identity. Through characters like Mirah and Mordecai Cohen, Eliot depicts Jewish cultural
identity in the Victorian period. Reaction to Daniel Deronda exposes the deeply embedded anti
semitism of the period. The story follows the tow main characters over the course of several years as
they struggle with their own ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was during this time that she began to suffer from the kidney problems that eventually killed her.
She was also plagued by chronic head and tooth aches during this time (Karl, 545). Despite her
physical ailments Eliot meticulously researched the book. She took Hebrew lessons with Emanuel
Deutsch and the character of Mordecai Cohen is said to be based on him. She also read extensively
about Jewish culture and tradition. In a letter Eliot s would be spouse, George Henry Lewes, writes
that of the two buying Judaic books and visiting a synagogue in Frankfurt in the summer of 1873
(Karl, 527).
Daniel Deronda was originally published in a series of monthly installments that appeared in
Blackwood s Magazine between February and September of 1876. Terence Cave notes in his
introduction to the Penguin edition of Daniel Deronda, that the decision to begin in February was
based on the inability to get it to the American market in December and Blackwood s belief that
January wasn t a fit month to publish anything(qtd. in Cave xxii). Eliot was able to stay comfortably
ahead of release dates while writing Deronda seemingly conquering the pressures of serial publication
that she so hated.
The text was then published in 4 bound volumes printed in 1876. In October of 1877 a second printing
of the novel contained minor alterations to the

  • 2. Analysis Of We Real Cool We Real Cool, by Gwendolyn Brooks is a lyrical poem that tells a story of teenage rebellion. Although the poem is relatively short, it packs an extremely powerful message about youth. Gwendolyn Brooks centered her works predominately around the African American consciousness. During the time in which the poem was written, many teens, especially young African American men felt misunderstood and like the world was set up for them to fail. At first glance, it appears this poem is a mere description of misunderstood young adults who are enjoying their youth. However, with further analysis, it is made clear that this poem talks about much more than that. While it is obvious that this poem is about rebellious youths, it is also about self identity and the dangers of herd mentality. Herd mentality describes how people follow and adapt the behaviors of certain groups. Herd mentality is in no way new; moreover, most people are subject to its effects. However, herd mentality becomes dangerous when a group has enough influence to dictate an individual s way of thinking. When an individual is desperate to find a place to belong, they will most likely follow the crowd even if they know that they are participating in something immoral; this can be seen in We Real Cool. In the opening lines of the poem, the reader is introduced to the subjects The Pool Players. Seven at the Golden Shovel (line 1 2), they are the we in the poem. It becomes apparent to the reader that the speaker is one of the seven pool players mentioned. The speakers tone in the poem is very prideful and defiant, but at the same time, it is filled with uncertainty. This poem is a formal verse ballad which uses simple sentences that have a steady meter that gives the poem a jazz like quality to the poem which further emphasizes the speaker s nonchalant attitude and their disdain for the establishment. The speaker contempt for the system is shown in the line We real cool. We Left school. (line3 4) The speaker feels misunderstood by society and yearns to find a place for themselves in the world. The danger in this is that the speaker of a poem gives up on conventional means of education in search for a place where they can belong, which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Manager Interview Essay I chose to interview Regina Geis, who holds the administrative role as acting supervisor for the County Mental Health adult day program, which provides services for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Ms. Geis has held this position for 15 months. This is her first managerial position within a human service agency. Her style of management has changed over this short period of time. She feels that she is now more direct with her direction with staff. She stated, Maybe now I come across as a little bit cold. She replied with Linear like Dr. Sprague (agency CEO). Ms. Geis feels that the communication skills that one must possess in order to make advancements in management are that one must be an effective communicator, know the work environment, and the people you work with. Edmondson (2009) discusses four different basic communication styles. The first style is expressive which have a tendency to speak quickly, focus on the big picture, and have a high energy level. They can be perceived as unpredictable, vain, or excessively jovial. Next are systematic who tend to focus on small details, not on the larger picture, and try to avoid conflicts. The third type listed is sympathetic. These individuals focus on people and relationships. They are good listeners and so concern for everyone s needs. Sympathetics also do not like be at odds with others. Lastly, the fourth communication style identified is directs who generally keep dialogue short and are perceived as a multitaskers. The study recommends that the individual discover her own communication style and adjust the style according to the situation. Grant and Taylor (2014) conducted a study which identified six essential communication traits that can aid women to demonstrate confidence: (1) starting strong, (2) staying succinct, (3) dimensionalizing content, (4) owning voice, (5) controlling movement, and (6) projecting warmth (p. 73). • 4. New York City Club Sociology The movie s backdrop is New York City, and revolves around Sofia Lin, who is married to a man named Rob. They appear to have a very sexually satisfying relationship. Sofia works as a couple s counselor/sex therapist, and introduced to James and Jaime. They have been dating for some time, and feel they have reached an impasse. Jaime suggested that they open up their relationship to sex with others. Sofia snaps and reacts by slapping Jaime, and then quickly apologizes for her outburst. She attempts to explain her behavior by disclosing she s pre orgasmic , and the men suggest she attend a club called shortbus . The club is inclusive to all various sexual preferences and a viable environment where Sofia is able to explore her sexual issues. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although it was brief, I have had the opportunity to meet with individuals who have had to work within the sex industry, and learn the genesis of when it started. The film also made me realize that I have much work to do on the way I express my curiosity towards other lifestyles. When Sofia was in the shortbus , I kept laughing at the horrified look on her face because I could absolutely see myself doing that. I appreciate people s sexual liberations, but the idea of having sex so openly is baffling. I m almost envious of that sort of freedom, and believe that feeling would help me build rapport with clients who choose to do so. Self disclosing my admiration would provide a sense of unconditional regard I hope all my clients would feel. The film also reaffirmed that my comfort level working with LGBT clients remains the same until I m given the chance to attain more real life experience. I was initially curious how James and Jaime were going to react with a married non gay female therapist, but they obviously responded well to her (besides the slap). The thought that she was Asian American came to mind as to why they responded to her so quickly, because Asian Americans are also considered to be an oppressed group. Then of course I wondered if they would have been as quickly to open with me if I had been their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. The Impact Of Industrialization On Society During The... Examine in detail the History of the Industrial Revolution. Discuss why Britain led the way in the Industrial Revolution and also explain in detail the effects of industrialization on society. Had it not been for the industrial revolution, I would doubt very much that we would enjoy the technology we have in the year 2000. The reason we have this technology is that between the years 1750 and 1914 a great change in the world s history was made. People started to discover faster methods of producing goods, which increased their economy. These people were mainly British and French, but after a few years the French were distracted by their revolution, and the British continued to industrialize. However you must not think this industrialization had no effects on society because it did. So in this essay I am going to talk about the history of the industrial revolution, discuss why Britain led the way in the industrial revolution and also I am going to explain to you in detail the effects of industrialization on society. In the midevel ages people were living in total darkness, and they did not know what was going on in the world around them. Happily the medieval ages were followed by the renaissance. Then came the year 1750, the year of the agricultural revolution in Britain which led away to a revolution in industry. Charles Townshend for example was one of the people who made the agricultural revolution possible. He suggested rotating the crops every year or two, to help ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The youth today may not see that infections and diseases are carried through the people they may surround themselves with. Not only can people get these illnesses through sexual encounters, but also through person to person contact. Infectious diseases are those that are transmitted from person to person by direct or indirect contact. Viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi all cause infectious disease. Malaria, measles, and respiratory illnesses are examples of infectious diseases. (Health Line) It is important for the youth to receive notice of these facts. Thirteen years later, in 1896, a new case appeared that would set a precedent for racial discrimination for years to come, and ultimately, drive a nigh irremovable wedge between the blacks and the whites in the south. The case in question arose when a seven eigths caucasian man, Homer Adolph Plessy, broke a Lousiana law barring black people from sitting in certain train cars. Upon refusing to move, Plessy was arrested and brought to court where the case made its way up through district and appellate courts and all the way to the Supreme Court. The question, posed by this case was: is the Louisiana law mandating racial segregation on trains unconstitutional under the fourteenth amendment? The court decided, in a seven to one decision written by Justice Brown, that the different train cars for blacks and whites weren t a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment. In his conclusion, Justice Brown wrote that the Fourteenth Amendment was intended to provide complete equality for all races before the law. However, he said, it is not intended to eradicate racial distinctions, and enforce social equality, nor is it an attempt to force a collusion of races. This conclusion gave rise to the infamous Separate but Equal Doctrine, a precedent that is a direct cause of Brown vs Board of Education. • 10. After a Time and Stairway to Heaven Poetry Essay Thesis: Catherine Davis After a Time and Robert Plant s Stairway to Heaven performed by Led Zepplin both focus on death and rebirth, the fact that no matter what we possess, we can t change this. First supporting point: After A Time establishes a deliberate dark, dismal tone, leading us to see that eventually the healing will begin. In Davis s poem first After a time, all losses are the same. One more thing lost is one thing less to lose; And we go stripped at last the way we came. (First stanza) Second supporting point: Davis uses figurative language to show the inevitability of death. The sense of treachery the want, the blame Goes in the end, whether or not we choose, And we go stripped at last the way we came. (Fifth stanza) Third supporting point: However, in the end, Davis shows us that no possessions and accomplishments will keep us from death or loss. That we will have no lifes simplier things and that these things brings joy far more than the material possessions can. So we, who would go raging, will go tame When what we have can no longer use: After a time, all losses are the same; And we go stripped at last the way we came. (Sixth Stanza) Most of the times we take it for granted that there is always plenty of time. • 11. The Use Of Bioactive Restorative Materials With A... Extensive research has been taking place in generating bioactive restorative materials with a potential for remineralization. [1] Bioactivity refers to apatite forming ability [2] while biomineralization is the ability to get anchored to the underlying dentin by the formation of a mineral rich interfacial layer and a tag like structure extending from the interfacial layer to the dentinal tubules. [3] Biodentine TM (BD) (Septodont, Saint Maur des Fossιs, Creteil, France) and TheraCal LC TM (Bisco Inc, Schamburg, IL, USA) are calcium silicate based bioactive liners that are proposed as alternatives to glass ionomers (GIs). The use of bioactive liners beneath resin composite (RC) would clinically be more advantageous than using GI liners as they are biologically well tolerated by the pulp tissue [4] and have comparatively higher remineralizing ability. [5] The success of these laminate restorations depend not only on the bond strength of the liner to the dentin but also on the quality of bond between liner and overlying RC. Various studies suggest the application of resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) instead of GI in the sandwich technique because of improved bond strength to RC due to its chemical bonding. [6],[7] The bond strength of RMGIC to RC varies depending on the type of adhesive used and it has been proved that self etch is better than total etch. [8] Biodentine TM (BD) is recently being used as a dentin replacement material under composite restorations. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

But unless you were born before 1955, polio may seem to be just another ephemeral disease that has been nonexistent for years. Those born before 1955 remember having a great fear of this horrible disease which crippled thousands of once active, healthy children. This disease had no cure and no identified causes, which made it all the more terrifying. People did everything that they had done in the past to prevent the spread of disease, such as quarantining areas, but these tactics never seemed to work. Polio could not be contained. In an attempt to control the disease, bewildered health officials reinstituted the usual rules of sanitation which they would later learn had worsened the threat of polio. They advised against open drains and unscreened windows. Parents were instructed to keep their children well bathed, well rested, well fed, and away from crowds. Bathing suits were locked away in closets, and nobody went to the public pools. When polio struck, movie theaters were shut, camps and schools were closed, drinking fountains were abandoned, draft inductions suspended, and nonessential meetings were canceled until the epidemic appeared to be over for the time being.[1] These precautions were harmless, but not particularly helpful. In the past, these precautions proved very effective in stopping the spread of diseases such as influenza and plague. For three decades now, people still did not know why they were getting their disease. And for three decades now, doctors, epidemiologists, and laboratory researchers were trying to figure out how the disease was spread.[2] Nobody has ever discovered completely how it is that polio is spread. The best evidence suggests that the virus is excreted in the stool and passed through hand to hand or hand to mouth contact by people who do not wash their hands properly or often enough. • 21. The Feminine Mystique Analysis Both the Victorian Era and 1950s and 1960s America featured inflexible expectations of a wife and her views on marriage. Grant Allen, a Victorian essayist, in Plain Words on the Women Question in 1889, wrote, We ought frankly to recognize that most women must be wives and mothers: that most women should therefore be trained, physically, morally, socially, and mentally, in the way best fitting for them to be wives and mothers (Broadview Anthology 628). Essentially, Allen holds the belief that all women are meant to serve as an asset to men, to complement men. Additionally, his use of the word train connotes that women should be disciplined to fit this role, which betrays the lack of equality between the sexes. He further argues that it goes against nature for women to desire more than motherhood and wifehood. He chastises women who attempt to oppose their duty, instead of boasting of their sexlessness as a matter of pride, they ought to keep it in the dark, and to be ashamed of it (628). In other words, to be feminine is to mother children and to marry a man. Deviating from this neatly structured plan for a woman s obligation is to become unfeminine. In America, Betty Friedan, a feminist writer, wrote The Feminine Mystique in 1963. In her book, she rebels against the traditional view of femininity. She coined the term which shares the title of her book as, The feminine mystique says that the highest value and the only commitment for women is the fulfillment of ... And when it comes to Cobain, most of what they believe is fabricated nonsense. Buzz Osborne, Melvins Documentaries are often assumed to be credible and filled with factual information; they do, after all, document reality. This is not always the case though. There are many factors that determine the reliability of documentaries: the editing, the director s agenda, the film s style, confirmation bias, and choice of interviewees, among other things. Documentaries are a representative medium, after all, and although they are able to give audiences insight into people and events that they were not able to experience first hand, there is much ambiguity surrounding the truthfulness of non fiction film. While it may be possible to inform and persuade people through film, it will never be able to accurately represent reality. Renaissance Influence on the Historical and Social Significance of Self Portraiture During the Renaissance, artists were acquiring status and the technical means to create a new genre of art called self portraiture (Bond). Portraits are defined as having a likeness of a specific individual (Adams). However, self portraits do not only have a likeness of the artist but also a sense of psychology that connects the viewer to the artist. This connection gives the self portrait a depth of complexity that even portraits do not always achieve. • 31. The Case Of Alfie And Peggy The fundamental issue in the case of Alfie and Peggy is whether the items in question are a part of the land (fixtures) that can be acquired by Alfie in the convenyancing process, or whether they are an item of personal property (chattels) that belong in the hands of the seller Peggy . According to the Latin maxim quicquid plantatur solo, solo cedid # , Alfie can claim ownership rights to the items in question, if they are attached to the soil of the land. In other words, the items must all be fixtures rather than chattels, for Alfie to seek ownership. At face value, if an item is physically attached or annexed to the land, it is regarded as a fixture. It could be argued that the antique mirror in the Queen Victoria is therefore a fixture, as it has been screwed into a part of the land, meaning Alfie can make a claim of ownership to it. However, physical attachment of an item is not enough to prove its fixture status. The degree of attachment, as described by Lord Lloyd in Elitestone Ltd v Morris#, is also important in determining whether an item is a fixture. For a fixture to exist, the level of attachment must be high. It could be argued that the action of screwing a mirror into the walls of the Queen Victoria is indeed a very high level of attachment, and even though items like the mirror may be easy to remove, as proven in Holland v Hodgson#, these items are still fixtures because of the scale of their attachment. Juvenile Justice And The Juvenile Court System Placing a juvenile in a detention center early in the court process increases the risk that youths will be found to be delinquent and damage their prospects for future success. A majority of the youths that are placed in these facilities pose little or no threat to the public and essentially do not need to be there. This portion of the juvenile court process is detrimental to the future and mental aspects of a youth s life. We desperately need to change the way that we handle the juvenile court system because we are only reinforcing the delinquent behavior that these youths have been exposed to. These sunglasses were made out of lenses that were flat panes of smoky quartz. They offered no corrective powers nor did they protect from harmful UV rays, but did protect the eyes from glare. In prehistoric and historic time, members of various Eskimoan peoples wore flattened walrus ivory glasses, looking through narrow slits to block harmful reflected rays of the sun. Modern civilization began experimenting with tinted lenses in spectacles around 1752. There was belief that blue or green tinted glass could potentially correct specific vision impairments. Protection from the sun s rays was not a concern at this time. Glasses tinted with yellow amber and brown were also a commonly prescribed item for people with syphilis in the 19th and early 20th century because one of the symptoms of the disease was sensitivity to light.
