The Story Of An Hour And The Yellow Wallpaper Analysis
Marriage is a commitment and accepting one another for each other s qualities and flaws. In the 18th
century, a happy marriage reflected well to society, however, behind closed doors the union
represented restrictive commitment. In the past, women viewed marriage as confinement; they had no
options to escape, and husbands controlled every aspect of their wives live. Women were unable to
express themselves socially, mentally, emotionally, and physically, although some found relief to
express their feeling through writing journals and writing to female friends. Two women that utilize
writing to enlighten society and women were Kate Chopin and Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Kate Chopin
and Charlotte Perkins Gilman s vision inspired women to reveal their independence and opinions
through the use of symbolism, setting, and theme in their short stories, The Story of an Hour and The
Yellow Wallpaper.
Through these both stories the authors demonstrates how both of the main characters work to identify
their freedom, to describe this they use symbolism to represent this emotion. Kate Chopin, the writer
of the short story, The Story of an Hour, utilizes symbolist phrases to express Mrs. Mallard s feelings
towards finding her freedom and escape from her controlling husband. For example, when Kate
Chopin wrote, She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver
with the new spring life (Chopin 1).That meant that it was her reborn, as a newly

The Study Of Osteoporotic Fractures
We utilized data from the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures (SOF)(36), a prospective cohort study of
community dwelling women aged 65 years and older in 1986 1988 (SOF visit 1). In brief, 9,704
predominantly Caucasian older women were recruited from population based listings in 4 locations in
the United States as follows: Baltimore, Maryland; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Monongahela Valley
(near Pittsburgh), Pennsylvania; and Portland, Oregon. Starting with the initial visit (visit 1),
participants attended clinic visits approximately every 2 years. An additional 662 African American
older women were recruited during SOF visit 6 (1997 1998). Women were not enrolled in SOF only if
they were unable to walk without assistance and had not previously undergone a bilateral hip
replacement. The institutional review board at each site approved the study and participants provided
written informed consent.
For this prospective cohort study, SOF visit 8 served as the baseline visit and SOF visit 9 served as the
follow up visit. At SOF visit 9, 1,513 women from 3 of the 4 original SOF sites attended a clinic visit
for a cognitive status assessment, and therefore only participants from those 3 sites are included in this
study. We included 1,470 women (40% of survivors in participating sites) who had anxiety assessment
at SOF visit 8 (2002 2004; baseline) and had cognitive status assessment at SOF visit 9 (2006 2008;
follow up). Of those 1,470 women with complete exposure and outcome data, we

Essay On Color Preferences
More often than not, teachers and day care providers who design centers or classrooms do not take in
account the preferences of the children that are to be attending these facilities (Read Upington, 2009)
The study Young Children s Color Preferences in the Interior Environment by Marilyn A. Read and
Deborah Upington (2009), was done to find out and highlight colour preferences in interior
environments, in the case of child development centers. (Read Upington, 2009) Designs of these
centers are usually centered around the adults predilections, in contrast, the study says that because
young children are the observers of the centers environment, their colour preferences should be
understood, besides, they are the ones who experience the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

In the results, Read and Upington (2009) found that many girls identified the colour purple as their
first choice. Of the entire group, 51%, including both boys and girls, chose purple as their first or
second colour preference. The study states that only 41% of the boys chose purple as their last or
second last preferred colour, however none of the girls had the same preference. (Read Upington,
2009) The study also found that 50% of all participants chose blue as their first and second choice.
Yellow did not seem to be a preferred colour with either boys or girls. (Read Upington, 2009)
Read and Upington (2009) also saw that there was no significant age difference where the results were
concerned, but a correlation was found between preferences for the cool colours over warm colours
which confirmed their second hypothesis. (Read Upington, 2009) There was also a confirmation on
their first hypothesis as well, the red image was the colour selected most often over other colours.
(Read Upington, 2009) Using this information, Read and Upington (2009) suggest that designers may
want to incorporate cool colours on the walls of child development centers. (Read Upington, 2009) A
wall with subtle purple hues could support a child s interest. (Read Upington, 2009) There are a few
strengths to this study, one of which would be that both boys and girls are used in the sample,
questions pertaining to gender should be then rendered

Analysis Of Art Spiegelman s Maus Series
David Brooks claims that Even though race and ethnicity run deep in American society...[people] are
amazingly undiverse in their values, politics and mores, (Brooks 2,4). Hunter S. Thompson, through
his striking Gonzo Journalistic Style, also approaches a conclusion that one s human nature contradicts
his/her views on morality. These two literary discussions provide significant insight into Art
Spiegelman s Maus series, which suggest that extreme sufferings and disasters challenge one s
perception of morality and human ethics. Greed may be the determining factor for the persistence of
moral ignorance. Art through many instances of Maus I, suggests that severe situations cause hunger
for power and money to overtake one s natural inclination to morality. Spiegelman stresses the
paradox of Jewish police, by simply bolding the word Jewish and removing the borders that contain
the action in the second panel, (Maus 1, 87). Furthermore, the reader will notice the vivid contrast
Spiegelman portrays in the back to back panels of the subsequent pages, between Vladek s father, and
a Jewish gestapo (Page 88, panel 4, 5; and Page 89, panel 3,5). Despite the resemblance of these two
figures, aesthetic differences suggest various hierarchical distinctions: the policeman s text bubble is
formed by jagged lines, and large letters, dominating the feeble comments of Jewish citizens under it.
Spiegelman argues, that despite the obvious similarity of these two Jewish figures, the authoritative
power of his job blinds him from any moral obligation to his fellow Jews. The similar comparison
below these panels, in which the gestapo now appears as a blackened person, reveal the true colors of
his personality. In addition, on pages 114 115, Spiegelman displays the lack of morality without
monetary incentive. Jakov refuses to face a helpless Vladek, with an offering of assistance, but he
completely turns around and openly accepts the offer in the midst of numerous Nazi guards, when
Vladek proposes a bribe. The first panel on the following page, with the inclusion of the secret
transaction of a jewel, implies that Haskel s rescue would have never occurred without his monetary
gain. These symbolic and metaphorical representations,

The Superformation Of Female Superheroes In The Wonder Woman
DC comics, illustrated the comic book, Wonder Woman, that strive for female superheroes to be
envisioned with great empowering messages for the other females who enjoy reading comics. The
female superhero, Wonder Woman, is given empowering qualities such as leadership and devotion.
Although, Wonder Woman is given these empowering qualities, the comic book artists clothed this
female character with clothing that sexualizes them greatly because of the amount of skin that is being
revealed. The suits that these female superheroes are shown to be wearing stimulates this sensual
excitement to the male audience which erupts these superheroes to receive a greater amount of
attention than those female superheroes who do not necessarily reveal as much skin. Similar to the
group of girls described in Rat Queens, the female superhero, Wonder Woman, contributes to the way
these adolescent girls are being judged for the appearance they should resemble. According to An
Analysis of Embodiment Among Six Superheroes in DC Comics , the author, Edward Avery Natale,
has incorporated astonishing research on the presentation of female superheroes in comic books.
Avery Natale stated that Lips, facial expressions, and hairstyles were also coded using the guide s
discussion on how to make women appear sultry ... [Avery Natale, 100] which goes to show that
female superheroes are created to be shown as physically and sexually pleasing so that these heroes
can attract more readers. Comic books

A Report On The European Union
The European Union contains just 7% of the world s population, but produces 1/3 of the world s Gross
National Product (Delegation of the EU to the US). A single market merges all 28 countries of the EU
into one economic free trade zone with no trade tariffs imposed on one another. The EU accounts for
51% of all trade that the UK conducts with the world (The Data Team 2). Since its admittance to the
Union in 1973, Britain s economy has grown from 326 million Euros per capita to 6,116 million Euros
per capita in quarter four of 2012. Despite its economic benefits, many have voiced concern over its
undemocratic practices. In a summary of the court case Van Loos v. Netherlands Inland Revenue

In order to recover from its economic losses, President Schuman of France proposed a single market
for the free trade of coal and steel. In an address delivered to the French Assembly, he remarked, The
pooling of coal and steel production... will change the destinies of those regions which have long been
devoted to the manufacture of munitions of war, of which they have been the most constant victims.
President Schuman s motives were not only the rebuilding of Europe s economy, but also the
assurance that Germany and France would never get into another war again. In 1951, the Treaty of
Paris was officially signed establishing the European Coal and Steel Community (European
Commission). The countries of Luxembourg, Belgium, The Netherlands, France, West Germany, and
Italy were the first countries to join.
As these countries experienced economic success, they hoped to expand the Coal and Steel
Community to something much more vast. In the Treaty of Rome in 1957, the European Economic
Community was established (CVCE). The EEC didn t just allow the free trade of coal and steel, but
also eliminated all trade tariffs completely. This enticed other countries including Britain to join the
Community. As the EEC continued to expand and prosper, it also started venturing into the role of
governing. It sought to emulate the model of that of

The Effects Of Deviance, Micro Level And Macro Level
There are several theories, which aim to help explain the causes of deviant behavior, however, not all
sociologists agree on the causes. There are two levels to look at when explaining causes of deviance,
micro level and macro level, each level has a different focus. I think that all of the theories are helpful
in explaining the causes of deviance, but I find the differential association theory to be most insightful.
Edwin Sutherland developed the differential association theory in the 1930 s. The differential
association theory includes nine different propositions, which explain the causes of deviance.
Differential association is defined as, social interactions with deviant as opposed to conventional
others (601). This theory basically explains how deviant behavior can be learned from various
interactions. In the documentary, The Interrupters, three professional ex criminals from Chicago who
work at CeaseFire and became Violence Interrupters are followed. The mission at CeaseFire is to
prevent the spread of violence at the source. One ex criminal, Ameena Matthews whose father was a
notorious gang leader, Jeff Fort, works to prevent violence in Chicago. Ameena Mathews used to be a
drug ring enforcer, but was able to get off the streets. I believe that the main reason why Ameena got
caught up in acts of deviance was because of her social interactions with deviant individuals. As a
young child, Ameena was exposed to deviant acts and individuals, which caused her to

Dreams As A Mode Of Freedom
The theme of dreams as a mode of freedom, an escape, is commonly seen in the literature of African
American writers that can be traced as far back as the Negro Spirituals during the time of slavery.
While the motif of dreams is used far and wide in African American literature, it is in no way a static
matter, but rather a dynamic entity that writers internalize and redefine to express the sentiments of
their time. The meaning of the dream progressed accordingly to racial tensions in the country and the
freedom African Americans were allotted to express themselves politically and creatively. Starting
with Negro Spirituals, hopes and dreams were often connected to a desire of death to escape slavery.
Following emancipation though, the dream motif began to articulate a more hopeful future.
While some of the poems by the Harlem Renaissance writer Langston Hughes harbor a melancholy
attitude echoing that of the Negro Spirituals, Hughes s work can mainly be seen as the turning point
for how the motif of dreams would be portrayed in the works of prominent black authors and
figureheads. Langston Hughes was the beginning of the positive portrayal of the dream. At the time,
Hughes flourished within his community and it wouldn t be until many years later that the full breadth
of his work would be celebrated. He inspired the likes of Lorraine Hansberry and Martin Luther King
Jr. to bring his message to the nation. The dreams expressed by Hansberry and King Jr. reflects those

The Columbian Exchange On The World

Columbian Exchange
There were many factors that the Columbian Exchange affected the world. It all began with the
legendary sailor, Christopher Columbus. In the year 1451, Columbus was born in the Republic of
Genoa (Irving 2). King John II of Portugal Hired Christopher Columbus as his merchant marine in
1477. At the time, Portugal was colonizing kingdoms and creating trades with African territories on
the Atlantic coast. In 1480 s, they discovered that the Indian Ocean was on the East side of Africa.
This discovery made a trade route for goods in Asia and goods in Portugal. One day, Columbus read
about the theory that the world is smaller than anticipated (Irving 20), he was convinced with the idea
and tried to convince king for funds to sail west for riches, but unfortunately, King John II was not
convinced with this idea.
In 1492, Ferdinand and Isabella saw the potential of the idea. They decided to fund Columbus with 3
ships. Santa Maria was the largest ship along with two ships, the Pinta and the Nina. Christopher
Columbus began his journey on the 3rd day of August 1492 from Palos de la Frontera (Irving 72), a
Spanish province of Huelva. On October, an island was spotted. The group of people that was living
on that island were the Tainos. The two parties began trading with each other. However, Columbus is
still gold hungry, so he kept wandering around until the Santa Maria crashed at

Guy Vanderhaeghe s The Last Crossing
Guy Vanderhaeghe s The Last Crossing is a Western of subtly crossed borders. Vanderhaeghe elicits a
sense of blurred lines between opposites, giving the illusion that boundaries are not so statically fixed.
The historical figure Jerry Potts illustrates that the division between Indigenous and white is not so
easily distinguished by ways of appearances, languages, and relations. The lines of health and illness
intertwine as the reader follows Addington s syphilis, Custis mystery ailment, and the Indigenous
peoples struggle with smallpox. Justice, punishment, and the law become subjective in the novel with
regards to Madge s death, Addington s military massacre, and Indigenous resistance against unfair
treatment. Distinctions between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His abilities with languages lead to his [making] a living as an interpreter and guide (105). In The Last
Crossing Potts is used as a guide primarily, but his gift with languages bridges the gap between whites
and Indigenous, as he is able to speak English to the Gaunt brothers. Without the understanding of
language, the relationship between the Metis man and the English brothers would never have been
established. PROOF COMMENT
Names create an identity, and Vanderhaeghe uses this convention to further confuse the division
between Indigenous and white. Jerry Potts is also referred to as Ky yo kosi and Bear Child throughout
the novel, mirroring his own inner conflict of being unsure of what he really is. He wants to be a
Blackfoot, a Real Person (Vanderhaeghe 106) but he is most commonly called by his white name,
reminding the reader of his positions on both sides. Another instance for confusion is when a Metis
brother is referred to with his white and Indigenous name together in a sentence. Unborn
Calf...McKay s pony (330).
Health and illness do not have concrete characteristics in The Last Crossing. Addington s battle
against syphilis, Custis near fatal ailment, and the Indigenouss constant fight with smallpox show that
appearances are deceiving. Addington is battling with syphilis throughout the book and his health
fluctuates between well and unwell. Addington s health picks up from being liverish and out of sorts,

The Invisible Man And The Giving Tree By Shell Silverstein
As important and necessary literature is for many things, such as introducing and connecting broad
thoughts, ideas, and topics to people, not all literature is suited for the masses. Most literature contains
hard to grasp concepts with underlying themes and ideas. Introduce formalism, the formalist literary
criticism acts as a way to simplify and convey the complex topics that are not explained thoroughly in
most literature. The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells, and The Giving Tree by Shell Silverstein are two
works of literature that convey important ideas that literature does, without the complex layers most
literature has. The Formalist or New literary criticism is reflected in both of these books through their
style, tone, and structure. The style in both novels is simple first person and third person point of view.
Though it may seem trivial, the point of view helps the author effectively convey the message of their
story without hidden messages, plots, and themes to decipher. In The Invisible Man, Wells had to
imagine how one might feel with no physical appearance, full of shame for his experiments gone
awry, and longing to regain what he had and who he once was and put those thoughts and feelings into
words. Shell Silverstein uses dialogue between a boy and a tree to teach, and convey ideas of
unconditional love, and selflessness in The Giving Tree. Distinguishing between kinds of writing not
according to their different forms but according to their unequal

What Does Myrtle Wilson Represent In The Great Gatsby
The 1920s, or the more popularly known Roaring Twenties, was a period where people expressed
themselves though the American Dream. The American Dream is the concept that with ambition and

of the wealthy through his novel, The Great Gatsby. The story takes place in Long Island during this

Stimulating Patriotism and Promoting Economic Prosperity...
World War II was of great importance to the United States of America. Women also had an important
role in this war. The war effort stimulated patriotism and promoted economic prosperity. American
industry quickly transformed to war production in order to contribute to the nation s military
necessities. When the men left to fight in war, women were left with the men s duties back on the
home front. During World War II, approximately 350,000 women served in the U.S. on the home front
and overseas. The working industry instituted a campaign urging women to do their part to meet
wartime manufacturing quotas. It wasn t common for women at this time to work outside the home,
but this war needed every helping hand possible, woman or man. World War II brought about the new
trend of women earning their own money for themselves instead of always having to rely on their
husband s money. This gave a sense of independence to women of this era. Besides working on the
home front, some women also volunteered for war service and join a various amount of women s
branches in the armed forces; such as the Women s Army Auxiliary Corps, which eventually became
the Women s Army Corp (WAC). The Women s Army Corps was the first time women were given a
full military rank. Women pilots also came about, these women were in an organization called Women

basic forms. It has influenced many pieces of modern architecture and design. Lissitzky was working
on a very important part to spread a Constructivism program beyond Russia. He spent time in Berlin
during the early 1920s because he was responsible for moving the movement to Germany. And then
from Germany, this program spread into other places, including the Untied States.
In 1923, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and his health declined. He was not allowed to travel out

The Meaning Of Education In Education
Melissa Biddle, the author of When Opportunity knocks: Integrating language arts and the daily
calendar writes, How many times have we as educators, felt that our plate is just too full and there isn
t possibly any room for more in our schedules? Yet additional classroom responsibilities continue to
invade our day and precious times. Biddle believes the solution to this problem is to integrate curricula
whenever possible. She states, This careful orchestration and intermingling of subject matter is
referred to as integrate or interdisciplinary instruction because language arts are brought into various
disciplines such as social studies, science, and math. According to Biddle, Calendar lesson are a whole
class instruction time that includes pertinent discussion; student interaction; oral language
development; grammar skills; writing; and of course, math concepts, too. Biddle provides multiple
examples of how she integrates curriculum using calendars. According to Biddle, This calendar time is
also a springboard for introducing, reinforcing, and assessing a wide variety of math skills that
correspond with our curriculum. Biddle states, As the students investigate these concepts of time, the
perfect opportunity arises to start talking in past, present, and future tense Biddle also uses a math
word wall and a calendar corner to help integrate curriculum. Biddle declares, On the math word wall
we put valuable math vocabulary, in alphabetical order, as the words are

Cultural Value And Behavior Of M Hk
Cultural Value and Behaviour of CC HK
China is a huge counties with population of 1.3 billion. The culture of the North and the South are
different. Therefore, it would be unrealistic to assume that Chinese people have ( Kim, Wan, and Pan)
completely homogenous attitudes or behaviors. Even Chinese subcultures have many commonalities
which including the use of the same Chinese characters, worship of the same ancestral spirits, a pride
in Sinocentrism, a heavy influence of Confucianism that stresses family order, respect, and
relationship harmony (Fan, 2000), a willingness to accept unequal power distributions in society, high
integration of groups, and a tendency to avoid uncertainty to a greater extent than other cultural groups
(Hofstede, 1980).
However, in order to identify the different between Chinese subcultures, before the launching of the
cultural studies programme in Lingnan University in 1999 there was no university in Hong Kong that
had institutionalized cultural studies as a discipline. Therefore, the scholars of the Cultural Value and

Rhetorical Analysis Of Shakespeare s The Bush
Option 3 In American society there is a common characteristic throughout the population for
individuals to strive towards always being correct. However, with the plethora of contrasting views
and stances on a multitude of topics, the possibility of always being correct diminishes considerably.
Intriguing is the fact that even when individuals possess this knowledge of the unlikelihood of being
correct, both debating parties will defend their beliefs, in some cases, even after one side has been
proven wrong. When a previously held conclusion is threatened by another s tempers can boil up. This
rising of emotion was seen throughout Laura Bohannan s Shakespeare in the Bush. Bohannan
repeatedly began defending her interpretation of Hamlet the instant an elder began giving ideas that
were contrasting towards her own. When Bohannan discussed how Hamlet s uncle married his
widowed mother and the elders began defending the notion she states, I was to upset and thrown too
far off balance by having one of the most important elements in Hamlet knocked straight out of the
picture (4). As the passage progresses the descriptive words that Bohannan uses to depict how she was
replying to the elder s rebuttals slowly became more vehement. She begins to state she spoke firmly
and that she snapped when debating Hamlet (5,6). Furthermore, she stated that, my audience looked as
confused as I sounded implying that she began contemplating the possibilities that her interpretation

Many language theorists have labeled various stages of language development. Most often these
stages are labeled babbling, jargoning, one word utterances, two word utterances, and all hell breaks
loose (Cole and Cole, Pinker, and Burling). During the babbling stage, children are learning how to
Language Development 4 produce the sounds that make up language, a process that Pinker feels is a
prerequisite for language development. Jargoning appears around 12 months, and is described as the
vocalization of syllable strings that sound similar to the language to which the child is exposed (Cole
and Cole). One word utterances or holo phrases are sometimes believed to stand for phrases or
sentences (Cole and Cole). At 18 months, language development is quickly developing; children are
increasing their vocabulary at a phenomenal rate of a new word every two hours (Pinker). As two or
three word utterances emerge these micro sentences already reflect the language being acquired: in
ninety five percent of them, the words are properly ordered (Pinker, 268). As Pinker s term the all hell
breaks loose stage suggest this stage is when children rapidly acquire vocabulary and grammar.

Emotional Health Guy Winch Analysis
Emotional Health When kids fall and they get a cut, they know that they need to cover the cut so that
it does not get infected. This is taught at such a young age, so that when it happens they are prepared.
But why don t we, as a nation, teach how to practice emotional health. In Guy Winch s video, Why we
all need to practice emotional first aid he talks on three main points that as a society we need to teach
how to care for. Winch gives many examples and real life situations to back up his claim. This video
appeals to the audience with winch stating three points: Stop emotional bleeding, Protect your self
esteem, and battle negative thoughts. Winch mentions that we need to stop emotional bleeding as one
of the steps to emotional health. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A habit in emotional health that is very common is rumination. Rumination is when something bad
happens to us and we continue to play it over and over in our heads trying to figure out a way we
could have change the situation. Winch says that this is very risking when we continue the negative
thoughts, You are actually putting yourself at significant risk for developing clinical depression,
alcoholism, eating disorders, and even cardiovascular disease. These are all huge risks people take
when they do not take care of their emotional health. I believe that this is Winches strongest statement,
because it shows that if we continue to only treat our physical needs and not our emotional ones, our
emotional needs will turn into physical issues. Winch takes a personal turn on this statement, his
brother was diagnosed with stage 3 non Hodgkin s lymphoma, and his cancer was aggressive. Winch
explains that he couldn t stop thinking about everything his brother was going through, but his brother
was extremely positive throughout it all. He explains what he did to continually break the negative
thinking, An so each time I had a worrying, upsetting, negative thought, I forced myself to concentrate
on something else until the urge passes. And within one week my whole outlook changed and became
more positive and more hopeful. This is the kind of information that needs to be taught at a younger
age along with

Ai Weiwei Research Paper
Ai Weiwei is arguably the most iconic artist in China today, his ability to be creative and express his
mind and beliefs on a government that does not appreciate it is very unique. As an activist, he calls
attention to human rights violations on a high scale; as an artist, he expands the definition of art
through expression. His works have put him in trouble with Chinese law, but he continues to fight for
his beliefs influences the common Chinese cititzens and continues to make him a true global icon. Ai
Weiwei was born on August 28, 1958 to Gao Ying and famous poet Ai Qing, in Beijing, China. In
1958, His father was denounced as a criminal following an anti rightist campaign by Mao aimed at
silencing intellectuals who oppose his regime. Weiwei s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many citizens around the world appreciate that there is a brave soul that is willing to sacrifice his
freedom and maybe even his life to express his mind. This was shown when Ai Weiwei was detained
in 2011. Ming Pao in Hong Kong reacted strongly to the state media s character attack on Ai, saying
that authorities had employed a chain of actions outside the law, doing further damage to an already
weak system of laws, and to the overall image of the country. The United States and European Union
also protested Ai s imprisonment. The international arts community also started petitions calling for
the release of Ai Weiwei . A piece called 1001 Chairs for Ai Weiwei was organized by Creative Time
of New York that called for artists to bring chairs to Chinese embassies and consulates around the
world on April 17, 2011, at 1 pm local time to sit peacefully in support of the artist s immediate
release. Even through his struggles he was also able to help the Chinese government by helping
decorate the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. He collaborated with other artists to create the birds nest
design for the stadium, but soon fell out of favor with the government by making remarks about a
poorly constructed school that collapsed during a

What Do Theories of Face Perception Tell Us About Object...
What do theories of face perception tell us about object perception in general?
Introduction
Face perception is the process by which the brain and mind understand and interpret the human face.
The cognitive and neural processes in face recognition differ greatly from those observed for object
recognition. Both objects and faces are generally considered to be viewpoint dependent meaning that
performance in recognition is better when viewed from a familiar viewpoint. However when
considering Biederman s (1987) recognition by components theory he found that objects can be
recognised equally as easily from all viewpoints. This is due to his belief that objects are recognised
from the individual basic shapes that make the whole object; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

(Similar to effects noted in patients with Agnosia, to be further discussed.) However Tarr and Bülthoff
(1995) found that when giving participants novel objects to recognise and extensive practice at
viewing the objects from a specified viewpoint that performance in object recognition was better from
familiar viewpoints than unfamiliar ones, which does not support Biedermans viewpoint invariant
theory. This result demonstrates viewpoint dependent where by object recognition is slower and less
accurate when viewed from different perspectives, this can be compared to the importance of the
inversion effect in face recognition where by faces are less accurately recognised when viewed upside
down.
This also requires us to identify the importance of expertise for both object recognition and face
recognition. Yin (1969) stated that individuals have a greater expertise at individuating faces. The
expertise hypothesis proposes that special visual processing for faces is due to humans having
expertise at individuating faces. Evidently humans are surrounded by faces from an early age and
there is some evidence suggesting that from birth, babies have a mechanism which facilitates holistic
processing of faces faster and more accurately (Nelson, 2001). So, just as recognition of snakes and
dangerous animals is innately hard wired to generate a fear response, the same hard wired responses to
faces may also be innate in order to

Perception of the Chinese People
Introduction
I Choose China because I am part Chinese and wanted to understand their culture a lot better. I believe
if I learn more about the Chinese culture I will be able to understand their communication and
tendencies better. Also to be honest I am just as guilty as anyone in not knowing the differences
between Japanese and Chinese culture, so on a side note I also hope to clear up a few
misunderstandings. At the very least you will know some information about the Chinese culture
solving part of the problem of the perception on Chinese people.
Mandarin is China s official language.
Chinese Communication patterns can be easily misunderstood by people sometimes leading to
conflict. The Chinese have a reputation for impassiveness. This is mainly because people of different
cultures misinterpret Chinese body language and gestures.
With 1.3 billion people, the world s second largest economy, and the fastest economic growth among
industrialized nations, China is an undisputed economic powerhouse, so it would not be a bad idea to
become more familiarized with their communication patterns in their business, education, and
healthcare.
Business
China is the world s second largest economy. Many U.S companies are multinational already, and
many more expect China to be a growing source of their revenue. Learning proper etiquette is a must
before conducting business in China.
When conducting business its never a good idea to be late but especially when meeting with Chinese

The Impact of the Flinestones and the Simpsons
Throughout American history, many cartoons have impacted the lives of many people today. The
Flintstones was a popular show in the sixties and The Simpson was popular in the nineties. Despite
many similarities between The Simpson and The Flintstones, the differences are not as obvious. In
both shows, the main characters always end up in trouble. Also they both have family situations to
deal with. There is a major difference between the two shows that makes them different from one
another. The main characters are completely different. The Flintstones were the greatest TV cartoon of
all time until The Simpsons came and took the title. The Simpsons and The Flintstones both are
comedies that catch viewers attention. These two shows have been making Americans laugh every
night for 30 minutes for many years. The Flintstones was a show in the sixties that many families
followed. They were a typical nuclear family which meant two parents and their kids. They were
popular because it was making problems that were happening in the world then, and changing it to the
same problem but in the Stone Age. The Flintstones family was made up with Fred, Wilma, Pebbles,
Dino, and Baby Puss. Fred was a loving husband and dad that worked at a rock and gravel company
for his boss Mr. Slate. He was easy to get angry. He would spend his time bowling with his neighbor
friend Barney. Wilma is his wife that loves to spend money. Their daughters name is Pebbles and she

The End Of The Cold War
The end of the Cold War marks more than just the end of the arms race, between the Soviet Union and
the United States, it also marks the weakening of communism. Communism, the greatest enemy to the
west during the Cold War had to be put down at any cost, this meant supporting militaristic
dictatorships that were against communism. The weakening of communism, however, ignited Global
Democratic Revolutions in which the people sought to gain the power back from the government.
These revolutions were mostly centered on the year 1989, and demonstrated the will of the people to
stop the oppression of these dictators or communist parties. The Philippines were no different,
independent organizations such as JAJA and NAMFREL rallied against the militaristic dictatorship of
Ferdinand Marcos. Additionally, the intervention of the church proved to be a powerful uniting tool
for the revolution, in a catholic predominant society. Women played no small role, Corazon Aquino
challenged Marcos politically, and many were involved in public rallies. As a result, the Philippines
peacefully defeated the oppressive rule of Marcos and entered a state of Democratic stability. To bring
about the revolution, it took the combines effort of the Aquino family, individual organizations, the
church, and individual citizens. In 1983 an exiled senator Benigno Aquino returned to the Philippines
in order to oppose Marcos. Sadly, Padriac Kenney wrote that Aquino was assassinated as he stepped
off his plane

  • 2. The Story Of An Hour And The Yellow Wallpaper Analysis Marriage is a commitment and accepting one another for each other s qualities and flaws. In the 18th century, a happy marriage reflected well to society, however, behind closed doors the union represented restrictive commitment. In the past, women viewed marriage as confinement; they had no options to escape, and husbands controlled every aspect of their wives live. Women were unable to express themselves socially, mentally, emotionally, and physically, although some found relief to express their feeling through writing journals and writing to female friends. Two women that utilize writing to enlighten society and women were Kate Chopin and Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Kate Chopin and Charlotte Perkins Gilman s vision inspired women to reveal their independence and opinions through the use of symbolism, setting, and theme in their short stories, The Story of an Hour and The Yellow Wallpaper. Through these both stories the authors demonstrates how both of the main characters work to identify their freedom, to describe this they use symbolism to represent this emotion. Kate Chopin, the writer of the short story, The Story of an Hour, utilizes symbolist phrases to express Mrs. Mallard s feelings towards finding her freedom and escape from her controlling husband. For example, when Kate Chopin wrote, She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life (Chopin 1).That meant that it was her reborn, as a newly ... • 3. The Study Of Osteoporotic Fractures We utilized data from the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures (SOF)(36), a prospective cohort study of community dwelling women aged 65 years and older in 1986 1988 (SOF visit 1). In brief, 9,704 predominantly Caucasian older women were recruited from population based listings in 4 locations in the United States as follows: Baltimore, Maryland; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Monongahela Valley (near Pittsburgh), Pennsylvania; and Portland, Oregon. Starting with the initial visit (visit 1), participants attended clinic visits approximately every 2 years. An additional 662 African American older women were recruited during SOF visit 6 (1997 1998). Women were not enrolled in SOF only if they were unable to walk without assistance and had not previously undergone a bilateral hip replacement. The institutional review board at each site approved the study and participants provided written informed consent. For this prospective cohort study, SOF visit 8 served as the baseline visit and SOF visit 9 served as the follow up visit. At SOF visit 9, 1,513 women from 3 of the 4 original SOF sites attended a clinic visit for a cognitive status assessment, and therefore only participants from those 3 sites are included in this study. We included 1,470 women (40% of survivors in participating sites) who had anxiety assessment at SOF visit 8 (2002 2004; baseline) and had cognitive status assessment at SOF visit 9 (2006 2008; follow up). • 4. Essay On Color Preferences More often than not, teachers and day care providers who design centers or classrooms do not take in account the preferences of the children that are to be attending these facilities (Read Upington, 2009) The study Young Children s Color Preferences in the Interior Environment by Marilyn A. Read and Deborah Upington (2009), was done to find out and highlight colour preferences in interior environments, in the case of child development centers. (Read Upington, 2009) Designs of these centers are usually centered around the adults predilections, in contrast, the study says that because young children are the observers of the centers environment, their colour preferences should be understood, besides, they are the ones who experience the ... Of the entire group, 51%, including both boys and girls, chose purple as their first or second colour preference. The study states that only 41% of the boys chose purple as their last or second last preferred colour, however none of the girls had the same preference. (Read Upington, 2009) The study also found that 50% of all participants chose blue as their first and second choice. Yellow did not seem to be a preferred colour with either boys or girls. (Read Upington, 2009) Read and Upington (2009) also saw that there was no significant age difference where the results were concerned, but a correlation was found between preferences for the cool colours over warm colours which confirmed their second hypothesis. (Read Upington, 2009) There was also a confirmation on their first hypothesis as well, the red image was the colour selected most often over other colours. (Read Upington, 2009) Using this information, Read and Upington (2009) suggest that designers may want to incorporate cool colours on the walls of child development centers. (Read Upington, 2009) A wall with subtle purple hues could support a child s interest. (Read Upington, 2009) There are a few strengths to this study, one of which would be that both boys and girls are used in the sample, questions pertaining to gender should be then rendered ... • 5. Analysis Of Art Spiegelman s Maus Series David Brooks claims that Even though race and ethnicity run deep in American society...[people] are amazingly undiverse in their values, politics and mores, (Brooks 2,4). Hunter S. Thompson, through his striking Gonzo Journalistic Style, also approaches a conclusion that one s human nature contradicts his/her views on morality. These two literary discussions provide significant insight into Art Spiegelman s Maus series, which suggest that extreme sufferings and disasters challenge one s perception of morality and human ethics. Greed may be the determining factor for the persistence of moral ignorance. Art through many instances of Maus I, suggests that severe situations cause hunger for power and money to overtake one s natural inclination to morality. Spiegelman stresses the paradox of Jewish police, by simply bolding the word Jewish and removing the borders that contain the action in the second panel, (Maus 1, 87). Furthermore, the reader will notice the vivid contrast Spiegelman portrays in the back to back panels of the subsequent pages, between Vladek s father, and a Jewish gestapo (Page 88, panel 4, 5; and Page 89, panel 3,5). Despite the resemblance of these two figures, aesthetic differences suggest various hierarchical distinctions: the policeman s text bubble is formed by jagged lines, and large letters, dominating the feeble comments of Jewish citizens under it. Spiegelman argues, that despite the obvious similarity of these two Jewish figures, the authoritative power of his job blinds him from any moral obligation to his fellow Jews. The similar comparison below these panels, in which the gestapo now appears as a blackened person, reveal the true colors of his personality. In addition, on pages 114 115, Spiegelman displays the lack of morality without monetary incentive. Jakov refuses to face a helpless Vladek, with an offering of assistance, but he completely turns around and openly accepts the offer in the midst of numerous Nazi guards, when Vladek proposes a bribe. The first panel on the following page, with the inclusion of the secret transaction of a jewel, implies that Haskel s rescue would have never occurred without his monetary gain. These symbolic and metaphorical representations, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Superformation Of Female Superheroes In The Wonder Woman DC comics, illustrated the comic book, Wonder Woman, that strive for female superheroes to be envisioned with great empowering messages for the other females who enjoy reading comics. The female superhero, Wonder Woman, is given empowering qualities such as leadership and devotion. Although, Wonder Woman is given these empowering qualities, the comic book artists clothed this female character with clothing that sexualizes them greatly because of the amount of skin that is being revealed. The suits that these female superheroes are shown to be wearing stimulates this sensual excitement to the male audience which erupts these superheroes to receive a greater amount of attention than those female superheroes who do not necessarily reveal as much skin. Similar to the group of girls described in Rat Queens, the female superhero, Wonder Woman, contributes to the way these adolescent girls are being judged for the appearance they should resemble. According to An Analysis of Embodiment Among Six Superheroes in DC Comics , the author, Edward Avery Natale, has incorporated astonishing research on the presentation of female superheroes in comic books. Avery Natale stated that Lips, facial expressions, and hairstyles were also coded using the guide s discussion on how to make women appear sultry ... In an address delivered to the French Assembly, he remarked, The pooling of coal and steel production... will change the destinies of those regions which have long been devoted to the manufacture of munitions of war, of which they have been the most constant victims. President Schuman s motives were not only the rebuilding of Europe s economy, but also the assurance that Germany and France would never get into another war again. In 1951, the Treaty of Paris was officially signed establishing the European Coal and Steel Community (European Commission). The countries of Luxembourg, Belgium, The Netherlands, France, West Germany, and Italy were the first countries to join. As these countries experienced economic success, they hoped to expand the Coal and Steel Community to something much more vast. In the Treaty of Rome in 1957, the European Economic Community was established (CVCE). The EEC didn t just allow the free trade of coal and steel, but also eliminated all trade tariffs completely. • 9. The Effects Of Deviance, Micro Level And Macro Level There are several theories, which aim to help explain the causes of deviant behavior, however, not all sociologists agree on the causes. There are two levels to look at when explaining causes of deviance, micro level and macro level, each level has a different focus. I think that all of the theories are helpful in explaining the causes of deviance, but I find the differential association theory to be most insightful. Edwin Sutherland developed the differential association theory in the 1930 s. The differential association theory includes nine different propositions, which explain the causes of deviance. Differential association is defined as, social interactions with deviant as opposed to conventional others (601). This theory basically explains how deviant behavior can be learned from various interactions. In the documentary, The Interrupters, three professional ex criminals from Chicago who work at CeaseFire and became Violence Interrupters are followed. The mission at CeaseFire is to prevent the spread of violence at the source. One ex criminal, Ameena Matthews whose father was a notorious gang leader, Jeff Fort, works to prevent violence in Chicago. Ameena Mathews used to be a drug ring enforcer, but was able to get off the streets. I believe that the main reason why Ameena got caught up in acts of deviance was because of her social interactions with deviant individuals. As a young child, Ameena was exposed to deviant acts and individuals, which caused her to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. Dreams As A Mode Of Freedom The theme of dreams as a mode of freedom, an escape, is commonly seen in the literature of African American writers that can be traced as far back as the Negro Spirituals during the time of slavery. While the motif of dreams is used far and wide in African American literature, it is in no way a static matter, but rather a dynamic entity that writers internalize and redefine to express the sentiments of their time. The meaning of the dream progressed accordingly to racial tensions in the country and the freedom African Americans were allotted to express themselves politically and creatively. Starting with Negro Spirituals, hopes and dreams were often connected to a desire of death to escape slavery. Following emancipation though, the dream motif began to articulate a more hopeful future. While some of the poems by the Harlem Renaissance writer Langston Hughes harbor a melancholy attitude echoing that of the Negro Spirituals, Hughes s work can mainly be seen as the turning point for how the motif of dreams would be portrayed in the works of prominent black authors and figureheads. Langston Hughes was the beginning of the positive portrayal of the dream. At the time, Hughes flourished within his community and it wouldn t be until many years later that the full breadth of his work would be celebrated. He inspired the likes of Lorraine Hansberry and Martin Luther King Jr. to bring his message to the nation. The dreams expressed by Hansberry and King Jr. reflects those of Hughes ... The Columbian Exchange On The World Miguel Rocha Mr. Hollinger History 1301 20246, 8:00 to 9:20 A.M. 14 September 2014 Columbian Exchange There were many factors that the Columbian Exchange affected the world. It all began with the legendary sailor, Christopher Columbus. In the year 1451, Columbus was born in the Republic of Genoa (Irving 2). King John II of Portugal Hired Christopher Columbus as his merchant marine in 1477. At the time, Portugal was colonizing kingdoms and creating trades with African territories on the Atlantic coast. In 1480 s, they discovered that the Indian Ocean was on the East side of Africa. This discovery made a trade route for goods in Asia and goods in Portugal. One day, Columbus read about the theory that the world is smaller than anticipated (Irving 20), he was convinced with the idea and tried to convince king for funds to sail west for riches, but unfortunately, King John II was not convinced with this idea. In 1492, Ferdinand and Isabella saw the potential of the idea. They decided to fund Columbus with 3 ships. Santa Maria was the largest ship along with two ships, the Pinta and the Nina. Christopher Columbus began his journey on the 3rd day of August 1492 from Palos de la Frontera (Irving 72), a Spanish province of Huelva. On October, an island was spotted. The group of people that was living on that island were the Tainos. The two parties began trading with each other. The historical figure Jerry Potts illustrates that the division between Indigenous and white is not so easily distinguished by ways of appearances, languages, and relations. The lines of health and illness intertwine as the reader follows Addington s syphilis, Custis mystery ailment, and the Indigenous peoples struggle with smallpox. PROOF COMMENT Names create an identity, and Vanderhaeghe uses this convention to further confuse the division between Indigenous and white. Jerry Potts is also referred to as Ky yo kosi and Bear Child throughout the novel, mirroring his own inner conflict of being unsure of what he really is. He wants to be a Blackfoot, a Real Person (Vanderhaeghe 106) but he is most commonly called by his white name, reminding the reader of his positions on both sides. Another instance for confusion is when a Metis brother is referred to with his white and Indigenous name together in a sentence. Unborn Calf...McKay s pony (330). • 17. The Invisible Man And The Giving Tree By Shell Silverstein As important and necessary literature is for many things, such as introducing and connecting broad thoughts, ideas, and topics to people, not all literature is suited for the masses. Most literature contains hard to grasp concepts with underlying themes and ideas. Introduce formalism, the formalist literary criticism acts as a way to simplify and convey the complex topics that are not explained thoroughly in most literature. The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells, and The Giving Tree by Shell Silverstein are two works of literature that convey important ideas that literature does, without the complex layers most literature has. The Formalist or New literary criticism is reflected in both of these books through their style, tone, and structure. The style in both novels is simple first person and third person point of view. Though it may seem trivial, the point of view helps the author effectively convey the message of their story without hidden messages, plots, and themes to decipher. In The Invisible Man, Wells had to imagine how one might feel with no physical appearance, full of shame for his experiments gone awry, and longing to regain what he had and who he once was and put those thoughts and feelings into words. Shell Silverstein uses dialogue between a boy and a tree to teach, and convey ideas of unconditional love, and selflessness in The Giving Tree. The war effort stimulated patriotism and promoted economic prosperity. American industry quickly transformed to war production in order to contribute to the nation s military necessities. When the men left to fight in war, women were left with the men s duties back on the home front. During World War II, approximately 350,000 women served in the U.S. on the home front and overseas. Introduction Face perception is the process by which the brain and mind understand and interpret the human face. The cognitive and neural processes in face recognition differ greatly from those observed for object recognition. Both objects and faces are generally considered to be viewpoint dependent meaning that performance in recognition is better when viewed from a familiar viewpoint. However when considering Biederman s (1987) recognition by components theory he found that objects can be recognised equally as easily from all viewpoints. This is due to his belief that objects are recognised from the individual basic shapes that make the whole object; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However Tarr and Bülthoff (1995) found that when giving participants novel objects to recognise and extensive practice at viewing the objects from a specified viewpoint that performance in object recognition was better from familiar viewpoints than unfamiliar ones, which does not support Biedermans viewpoint invariant theory. This result demonstrates viewpoint dependent where by object recognition is slower and less accurate when viewed from different perspectives, this can be compared to the importance of the inversion effect in face recognition where by faces are less accurately recognised when viewed upside down. This also requires us to identify the importance of expertise for both object recognition and face recognition. Yin (1969) stated that individuals have a greater expertise at individuating faces. The expertise hypothesis proposes that special visual processing for faces is due to humans having expertise at individuating faces. Evidently humans are surrounded by faces from an early age and there is some evidence suggesting that from birth, babies have a mechanism which facilitates holistic processing of faces faster and more accurately (Nelson, 2001). So, just as recognition of snakes and dangerous animals is innately hard wired to generate a fear response, the same hard wired responses to faces may also be innate in order to ... Communism, the greatest enemy to the west during the Cold War had to be put down at any cost, this meant supporting militaristic dictatorships that were against communism. The weakening of communism, however, ignited Global Democratic Revolutions in which the people sought to gain the power back from the government.
