Pregnant African American Women s Attitudes Towards...
Sheryl Goodman, Kristen Williams, and Sona Dimidjian hypothesis in Pregnant African American
Women s attitudes Towards Perinatal Depression Prevention is that African American women are less
likely to seek help for depression either after the birth of their child or right before the child is born
specifically low income women. It states that although perinatal depression is common for women it is
very high among African American women than any other race.
II. Methods: The methods utilized as part of this research was a non experimental design which is

Controlling Images of Black Womanhood
In Patricia Hill Collins Mammies, Matriarchs, and Other Controlling Images, she illustrates four main
stereotypes that Black women face. The first controlling image applied to African American women is
The Mammy. The mammy is the faithful, obedient servant to the white family and the stereotype
attempts to hide the fact that black women who work for white families are being exploited. By loving
and caring for her white children more than her own, the mammy symbolizes the dominant group s
perceptions of the ideal black female relationship to elite white male power. The smiling mammy
signals her agreement with the situation, seemingly accepting her subordination (Collins, 71). Next is
the image of the Black matriarch (Collins, 73). According to the stereotype, they spend too much time
away from home, are overly aggressive and unfeminine, and allegedly emasculate their lovers and
husbands. This stereotype attempts to control conduct by punishing black women for assertiveness
and hides the oppression by making it seem that black women are naturally this way (Collins, 74 75).
The third controlling image of Black womanhood is that of the welfare mother, which is linked to
Black women s increasing dependence on the welfare state (Collins, 76). This time, the punishment is
for failing to work. Rather than being a bad mother for deserting the children, now the concern is
being with the children too much and not working. Again, by pinpointing the Welfare Mother as the
cause,

Microsoft E Business Suite ( Ebs ) Upgrade
Possibly the most comprehensive change to the daily operations will be the Oracle E business suite
(EBS) upgrade. This IS will provide many solutions to the operations and maintenance managers by
providing total operational oversight at the click of a button. EBS enables users to oversee projects,
asset milestones and budgets, and staff projects. It also has a quick report generator for business
meetings and scheduling. Another feature that will be highly beneficial is the ability for EBS to
integrate and enhance existing programs. It will streamline financials, enhance supply chain
management, and fulfill human capital management requirements. Utilizing the asset lifecycle
management tool within EBS will enhance financial management of our aircraft and equipment items.
It will also calculate the most efficient way to make payments on the aircraft that will maximize the
use of our funds and free up income that can be used elsewhere within the budget. Many of the
equipment items will require calibration from testing measurements and diagnostics equipment
(TMDE) laboratories, which require scheduling and shipping coordination. For this task, the value
chain execution tool would be perfect. It will line up and track the schedule of TMDE items that
require calibration; once the items come due shipping will be coordinated automatically. There are
plenty of applications in the Oracle E Business Suite that the club will utilize for our E Business, as
seen in Table 3 in Appendix A

Introduction
In recent years, the implementation of solar energy and techniques surrounding the management of
solar radiation have come to the forefront of the discussion about alternative energy. However, people
have different levels of knowledge and awareness about solar energy; they also have varying opinions
of solar energy. This leads them to have different perceptions of the implementation of solar energy
and techniques surrounding the management of solar radiation. The differences in one s perception of
not only solar energy, but alternative energy sources in general could be more apparent within

They concluded that this lack of knowledge points to a gap in information about solar energy. Their
study also found that there is a nuanced relationship between environmental concern and the use of
solar energy, which means that people have very complicated and conflicting attitudes towards
gathering and processing data that is related to alternative energy. This affects their willingness to
learn about alternative energy sources. A study done by D. Fuchs and M. Arentsen (2002) supports the
findings of the Rai Beck study as they found that a lack of knowledge of electricity supply options and
the negative consequences that come with electricity use is a barrier to the consumption of renewable
energy sources, such as solar energy. Faiers and Neame (2006) found that people who have
implemented solar systems at an earlier stage tend to be more knowledgeable on the subject of solar
energy. Faiers and Neame also found that knowledge on the subject of solar energy increases the
likelihood of buying solar systems.
People s opinion of solar energy. An overwhelming majority of Americans support the expansion of
solar energy (Funk Kennedy, 2016). However, people do have a negative opinion of certain aspects of
solar energy, such as the high cost of solar energy

Comparison Of Interstellar, By Christopher Nolan, And...
We all dream of an ulterior world, a world in which we picture a perfect life with no struggles,
problems, or pandemics. Both Interstellar, by Christopher Nolan, and Station Eleven by Emily
Mandel, depict their characters as struggling not only with survival, but their sense of their own
identity and security. Within Station Eleven, the saying, survival is insufficient is a recurring theme of
Interstellar as well. While there are some differences in the characters and themes within Interstellar
and Station Eleven, the similarities are the connections to their identity in which they adapt to the
force of change within their world. As the characters struggle with adapting, they cling to certain
things that allow them to remain sane. As a result, the characters feel like they have a purpose again
due to their struggle for survival.
Within their harsh and collapsing worlds, Murph and Kirsten are the puzzle pieces that connect their
stories together. For example, Murph cracks the code of the theory of gravity with the help of her
ghost, her father within the third dimension, providing her the missing information that saves their
planet from extinction. All that time, Murph tediously trying to figure out what her ghost was trying to
communicate, Murph finally makes the realization that he came back! It was him! All this time... I... I

Latavius Murray, Running Back Oakland Raiders Source nfl.com There s a lot of buzz surrounding
Latavius Murray in raider nation. Size and speed he told the San Francisco Chronicle. What does GM
Reggie McKenzie think about all of this? He can do it all Kevin Patra of nfl.com reports. Murray was
once asked to move to linebacker in college, but he now has a chance to make fools of those coaches.
Latavius Murray started for the Raiders at the tail end of last season, and from the sounds of training
camp, he looks to stay the starter. Analysis: The Raiders haven t had a 1,000 yard rusher since Darren

How he sustained the injury is unknown, but it required 12 stitches. Walker led the team in receiving

quarterback Marcus Mariota. With the injury being a small deal, Walker remains to be a solid choice at

The Causes And Impacts Of World War II
World War II was a worldwide war that happened from 1939 to 1945. It involved the majority of the
world s countries including which eventually formed the two opposing military alliances the Allies
and the Axis. It was the largest war in history, and involved more than 100 million people from over
30 countries. The major countries threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities
behind the war effort. World War II has had the most fatalities and injuries of any war in human
history, accumulating 50 million to 85 million fatalities, with most being civilians in the Soviet Union
and China. World War 2 had events such as the genocide of Jews orchestrated by Adolf Hitler and his
Nazi party, bombings, starvation, disease and the use of nuclear weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
which was the first use of nuclear weapons in history.
During the war the royal navy had noticed that aircraft carriers were becoming the ultimate ships for
naval warfare, and that the royal navy s former naval superiority in terms of their battleships had
become irrelevant. The royal navy had noticed that battleships could no longer fulfil their roles in a
cost effective manner. They were too big, too expensive to build and maintain, and their crews too
large. Due to this the royal navy was an early innovator in aircraft carrier design, introducing
armoured flight decks, in place of the battleships. This then meant that the royal navy focused more on
building aircraft carriers and

Stages of Economic Reform in China
China had gone through a major reformation that is called Socialism with Chinese characteristics that
started in late 1978, sparked by a very influential politician and leader, Deng Xiaoping. The
reformation is carried out in different stages. It is very important to understand these stages, as each
stage is the prerequisite for China to move to another stage. Large scale of government planning is
heavily involved throughout the reformation. Despite having to go through financial crisis couple of
times, globally and throughout Asia, China seemed to respond quickly and effectively to handle these
difficult situations. As of today, China remains as an admiration and aspiration for not only countries
in Asia, but also around the world. According to Tian (1996), there are three stages of economic
reform in China. The first stage is characterized by economic liberalization. This stage was said to be
the most remarkable stage as it has greatly changed the Chinese people s values, thinking and
behavior. The changes were first introduced to people in rural areas and later to other industries and
geographic areas. The first stage involved a lot of efforts to the development of foreign trade. China
began to adopt decentralized decision making and various types of incentive mechanisms. China has
been using its abundant supply of labor effectively since then. The second stage of the economic
reform is described by marketization. This stage can only be carried out effectively only

Technology And Its Impact On Human History
Humans transitioning from being hunting and gathering nomads that would wander looking for food
to being masters of full fledged civilizations was one of the biggest changes in all of human history.
Now this change in history was caused by first humans ability to create tools and mastering
technology. The mastering of technology played a huge role in the development in civilizations
however science wasn t as much of a concern to people in prehistory and didn t become very common
till the first civilizations and even then it was only that of practical science that could be used by the
everyday person. The only science that was truly studied and appreciated by early humans was
astronomy and that was able to help in the development of calendars. The first things humans had
been there gifted evolutionary tools of thumbs which allowed them to grasp things and create new
things with and the other was speech which allowed the communication of ideas. Another very
important technology was the control of fire which allowed humans the ability to cook their food, use
it to move into colder climates, kept wild animals away, and very important because now humans no
longer needed to depend solely on the sun as a light and heat source. It was also able to harden
wooden tools. They also made things like needles for sewing clothing, spears used for hunting, and
even had developed rope and nets. Almost all tools developed by the first humans were for food
collection in one way another,

Essay about Taxes, GDP and Net Personal Income
Taxes are an inevitable necessary part of life. While most of us become stressed out and suffer
financially from taxes, it is a known fact that we enjoy many of the benefits of the process of taxation.
To look at it from a positive point of view, we must remember a few important parts of our lives that
are made possible from taxes. These include new highway construction and repairs, the building and
maintenance of public parks and facilities, our law enforcement agencies, emergency services, and
much of the health care system; all courtesy of taxes. This assignment will discuss the government s
need to raise and lower taxes and the outcome it has on the GDP and net personal income and other
key factors that play part in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Typically, when the government raises taxes our gross income remains the same allowing for a loss of
personal net income. As our net personal income decreases the amount of disposable income we have
also shrinks. This effects the economy in a negative way because people spend less which essentially
decreases the income of the businesses that they normally buy their goods and services from, which
ultimately leads to a decrease in the total tax revenue that was enforced to help the economy to begin
with.
Furthermore, just as too low taxes over a period of time can have detrimental effects, having too high
taxes can produce detrimental effects as well. When taxes are increased it seems that the productivity
of employees seems to decrease, thus businesses suffer. This seems to be because people tend to
decrease their output at work because they feel they are not getting as much money per hour as the
human effort they put forth should be paid for (Congressional Budget Office, 2005). As people begin
to spend less and there is a lower demand, the supply becomes higher and essentially just sits in
storage. This leads to higher unemployment rates which drop the demand even further and as a direct
result, people s net

Symptoms And Symptoms Of Depression
Black Cloud Everyone occasionally feels sad at some point of their lives. These feelings can be short
lived or can last for a couple of days. When you feel depressed , it interferes with our daily life and
causes pain for both yourself and the people who care about you. Depression is a mood disorder
causing a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. (Dictionary 2015) Many people view
depression and sadness as the same thing. Part of the confusion is that sadness is the most
recognizable symptom for depression. Depression is not sadness. Depression is an illness that occurs
through the brain. Depression experiences physical symptoms. Depression needs treatment.
Depression can be a black cloud that can follow you everywhere you go. Major depressive disorder is
one of the most common mental disorders in the United States. Each year about 6.7% of U.S adults
experience major depressive disorder.(National Institute of Mental Health 2015) Women are 70 %
more likely than men to experience depression during their lifetime. Non Hispanic blacks are 40% less
likely than non Hispanic whites to experience depression during their lifetime.(National Institute of
Mental Health 2015)The average age of onset is 32 years old. Additionally, 3.3% of 13 to 18 year olds
have experienced a seriously debilitating depressive disorder.(National Institute of Mental Health

Nurse As An Ideal Nurse
There must be a professional relationship between nurses and patients which must encompass
trustworthiness, empathy and cooperation among them. According to (Severinsson, 2003), the goal of
ideal nurse can be achieved by the nurses by developing professional relationship with the care
receivers. In achieving this model the nurses had to fulfill the health related demands of patients
related to biological and psychosocial aspects of health. Patients have high expectation from the
nurses, it has been considered as a tool of early treatment and recovery of the patients when the nurses

Suicide Can Be A Difficult Topic To Discuss. Especially
Suicide can be a difficult topic to discuss. Especially if one has known someone who has committed

implementation guides, student response cards, Will to Live packets, student newsletters, access to
online resources, and the Brief Screen for Adolescent Depression (BSAD) forms. The program also
has an interactive training module online for school staff and supporters.
Research on this program has shown a favorable outcome of reduced suicide. At a 3 month posttest, it
was found that intervention high school students were less likely than control students to report having

Symbols In Heart Of Darkness
Africa s Darkness Darkness refers to the evil acts of another person. These evil acts can symbolize
darkness in any situation, such as violence, discrimination, and other cruel acts that people experience
daily. Acts of darkness could cause harm to an individual physically or emotionally. In the novel,
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, the word darkness is used to symbolize many events that
happened in the continent of Africa. Three events that symbolize the word darkness are the Europeans
cruel behaviors, Kurtz s selfishness, and Marlow s sexist statements. One event in the novel that
displayed darkness was when the Europeans were cruel to the Africans. The main character, Marlow,
went on a voyage to the Congo River. When Marlow arrived in Africa, he recognized that the Africans
were being treated in an evil manner. In the novel, Marlow states, They were dying slowly it was very
clear. They were not enemies, they were not criminals, they were nothing earthly now nothing but
black shadows of disease and starvation, lying confusedly in the greenish gloom (Conrad, 82). This

Kurtz or the Europeans, but it is also displayed in the main character, Marlow. Marlow would
occasionally speak sexist statements to himself, which shows that Marlow has a heart of darkness. In

their own, and there has never been anything like it, and never can be. It is too beautiful altogether,
and if they were to set it up it would go to pieces before the first sunset (Conrad, 76). This statement
from Marlow signifies that he is an individual who thinks that women cannot do anything on this earth
except make it worse. This definitely shows that Marlow has a heart of darkness. Therefore, darkness
is used throughout the novel because of Marlow s sexist

Summary Of Michael Jordan And The New Capitalism
Walter LaFeber s essay, Michael Jordan and the New Capitalism: America on Top of Its Game,
examines the ways that capitalism, along with high tech communication, is conquering the world, one
person or in this case one pair of feet at a time. Beginning as a basketball prodigy, rising to an
international phenomenon, and finally a seductive commercial ideal, Jordan is a true example of how
our American corporations have used technology in a brave way to expand all over the world.
Through LaFeber s examination of Nike and its power over the global, along with Jordan s
background, a lot is revealed about American society.
In 1999, when this essay was published, something as simple as a cellphone was a revolution to the
American people. Conversations anywhere with no wires involved! Wow! Looking back now,
American seemed pretty simple in 1999. This is the same for Michael Jordan once upon a time, Jordan
was JUST a basketball player. LaFeber s essay illustrates for us the rise of the young Jordan from his
middle class family in racist North Carolina through his college years and eventually into the NBA
where he became an international sports icon. LaFeber tells the story of how Jordan caught the eye of
Nike CEO Phil Knight and goes on to explain how Knight transformed Jordan into the face of a multi
billion dollar international corporation. LaFeber also fills us in on race and sports issues surrounding
Jordan and how that played a part in Nike s growth. LaFeber shows us how race effected middle class
Michael Jordan at a young age and how he was able to overcome this and grow into the star he is
today.
There is often a chief product that keeps a business afloat even in the rough times. McDonalds has the
Big Mac, Apple has the iPod, and Nike has Jordan. In the essay, LaFeber speaks about the types of
business deals that fueled Jordan s career. The new business strategies of the shoe company Nike,
helped escalate Jordan to the level of global fame he is today. Nike was an American company which
produced and sold a majority of their shoes in other countries. Here, LaFeber illustrates how the world
interacted with itself, and ultimately how globalization took off. LaFeber identifies Jordan at the
center of a new

International Law And Nuclear Weapons
Internationally, nuclear weapons have been an important topic of concern and debate for the past
several decades. The concerns and debates within the international community regarding the
proliferation of nuclear weapons to more sovereign states in the post Cold War era have led to many
international law instruments in attempts to contain these weapons of mass destruction. Treaties such
as the Treaty on the Non Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the Test Ban Treaty of 1963,
international organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the Korean
Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO), along with United Nations Security Council
resolutions and advisory opinions from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) have all played roles in
attempting to contain and reduce nuclear weapons in the international community. However, have
these treaties, advisory opinions, resolutions, and creation of international organizations been effective
in curtailing sovereign states from obtaining and testing nuclear weapons? This paper will highlight
the relationship between specific instruments of International Law pertaining to nuclear weapons
through a case study of North Korea to show that instruments of International Law in particular, such
as the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Agency (KEDO), the International Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA), along with United States and United Nations economic restrictions, have been
ineffective at controlling the

Puerto Rican Music as Representation of Their History and...
Puerto Rican Music as Representation of Their History and Culture
Puerto Rican music is an evolving art form that expresses Puerto Rican culture and identity. The
development of Puerto Rican music is also a reflection of their history, both being complicated by
several layers. Social, political, and economic conditions are all related to the musical expressions of
Puerto Ricans (Glasser, 8). Puerto Rican migration to the United States and the culture clash
experienced by migrants is another layer complicating the evolution of Puerto Rican music (Glasser,
199). Musical expression has been affected by every aspect of life for the Puerto Ricans and therefore
is an illustration of the Puerto Rican experience.

One musical form excepted by the upper class is the danza. This form was considered European and

But with the growth of nationalist sentiment, the invasion of Cuban and North American dance forms,
the growing presence of Afro Puerto Rican popular music from below , by the late nineteenth and
early twentieth century the upper classes had positively sanctified the danza as the national music of
Puerto Rico. Overtime and in defensive reaction to rapid social, economic, and political change, the
danza became a potent national symbol (Glasser, 195).
The irony of the elite s claim to the danza is that the musical profession was not considered a
respectable occupation and was therefore only practiced by mulatos or negritos, mainly of the working

Analysis Of The Book The Greatest Ghost
Chinese ghost stories, unlike American Horror Story and Japanese Sadako, never fail to fascinate us. It
gives people a mysterious feeling, accompanied with a slight sense of horror, yet romantic and
touching. In the eyes of westerns, ghost is always associated with the word haunted or demon ,
nothing but clichés about spirit making fun of people and exorcist help people out. However, Liao
Zhai Zhi Yi, the greatest ghost story compilation in Chinese history, is far from exorcism and scary
scenes, on the contrary, it largely describes beautiful bitter sweet love stories between scholars and
female ghosts, which they played very important roles in this book. Therefore, this paper will mainly
discuss the development of the ghost literature genre, the roles of scholars and female ghosts and their
importance in the example of the Magic Sword and the Magic Bag, and some common themes in Liao
Zhai.

The Business s Planning And Control Policy
BUDGETING
In the most recent years budgets are considered to be one of the key factors about the business s
planning and control policy (Thomas, 1983, p. 133). Financial budgets show the business s strategy
concerning the following year compiled by financial statements, plus they are supposed to be the
policy used in order to evaluate the managerial performance and be the principle of the management
system (ibid). Budgets are considered to be attached to the concept of control.
It is really essential that firms create a written project that formulates which will be the objectives of
the company, what kind of strategies should be followed and what outcomes are more likely, also
known as performance targets (Merchant Van der Stede, 2012, p.306). According to Drury (2004, p.
593) budgeting is affected by the fulfillment of the deep rooted plan for the following year and, due to
the shorter preparation boundary, budgets are supposed to be accurate and particularized. Budgets are
a straightforward evidence of what should be anticipated to be accomplished throughout the duration
of the budget period.
According to Hansen and Mowen (2003, p.992) Budgetary slack is the process of padding the budget
by overestimating costs and underestimating revenues . Managers and workers in a firm need to be
encouraged to participate in the budget. There are two main ways in which the participation in the
budget takes place: the first one is the top down approach, in which the managers give

Elie Wiesel Night Themes
Elie Wiesel has said that all his works are commentary on Night, his one work that deals directly with
the Holocaust. His novels are odysseys of a soul fragmented by the Holocaust, in quest of tranquillity,
an attempt to move away from the night, reaching the shores of day. The key to understanding Wiesel,
then, is his memoir in the form of a novella, Night. It is a slim volume that records his childhood
memories of his hometown and his experiences in the concentration camp. It also contains the themes,
images, and devices that recur throughout his novels.
Night
The opening chapter of Night begins with the social setting of Wiesel s native village of Sighet in
Transylvania its inhabitants, their customs, their beliefs and his first meeting with Moché, the beadle,
a character who forms a link to all his other works. Events occur rapidly. The disruption of normalcy
with the invasion of the Germans, the forcing of the Jews into ghettos, their deportation, and the
obliteration of the Jewish community are recorded tersely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The townspeople, however, refuse to believe him and think he has gone mad. Moché appears in every
book; his role is usually that of messenger in the tale he tells. Madness is an essential element in all
Wiesel s works. On the one hand, it is indicative of the malady that struck the world during the
Holocaust years. Wiesel, however, treats his madmen sympathetically. Their madness is not clinical
but mystical. They are visionaries, saints, or messengers, endowed with the task of saving the world.
As such, they become one with humankind, God, and creation. Wiesel s point is that madness can be a
force of evil or good. Hitler and his Nazis were mad. Their madness was employed to destroy the
world. Most of Wiesel s madmen want to bring about the Messiah; they want to redeem the

Performance should be monitored. The overall standard by which the project manager will be
evaluated would enable the project to be completed on schedule and within the cost that were outlined
before the project began. I would crash A, P, and Y because it would reduce the completion time just

Projects are unique because it is a one time operation designed to accomplish a set of objectives in a
limited time frame. They all involve planning, preparation, and coordinating work that is to be done.
Priorities must be set in order for the project to be accomplished. Project management techniques and
software is necessary to maintain a schedule and budget performance. Project Management is the set
of knowledge, skills, and abilities that plan, organize, implement, control, and complete projects given
finite resources of people, equipment, and time.

is to basically pass amendments in a faster manner. Like what is stated in Davidsons book on how
everything that happens inside the Senate is extremely sluggish. How does it work? The way that
unanimous consent works, is when a member of the Senate wants a bill to go to the floor within a

Research Methods For The University Recycling Program
Research Methods We began by creating an interview guide that consisted of four questions. The
interview questions for faculty were different from the ones asked to students. We included questions
regarding participants personal knowledge about recycling, their recycling habits and what their
thoughts about the University recycling programs. In addition, we asked participants to identify ways
they could reduce their paper usage, and if they could suggest something that the University could do
to improve.
We reached saturation after interviewing eight random students; interviews were held at the Taylor
Family Digital Library. Faculty members were chosen randomly and we interviewed two before
reaching saturation. Both faculty members were professors and the interview took place after their
lecture. The questions that we asked relate to our research question, which is what faculty and
students, are doing to help the University of Calgary reduce paper and how can it improve.
Preliminary Results
In general terms, we found that all participants recycle paper. Most recycle on a regular basis.
However, one of the participants mentioned that he only recycles when it is convenient and easy for
him, this means when recycling facilities (i.e. recycling bins) are nearby. In contrast, another
participant stated that she would carry the paper with her until she found the proper bin to throw it in.
All the participants claimed that recycling paper is important to them, and they would

The song Not Your Way by Misterwives explores this exploitation of women and and how modern

Lev Vygotsky Pretend Play
Free from adult obligations and unburdened by serious responsibilities, children are likely to spend
many of their days role playing imaginative scenarios, an activity known as pretend play [CITE
CITE]. Typically appearing around the age of twelve months, pretend play is initially central to the
self, before expanding to include peers and objects [CITE]. As well as being an effective way to keep
children entertained, prominent psychologist Lev Vygotsky believed pretend play to be a complex
process which fosters the development of vital cognitive operations such as self regulation (impulse
control, self direction, planning, and appropriate social behaviour) and symbolic thought (assigning an
alternative meaning to something), known together ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Social speech is the first to occur, typically around the age of two, and involves external
communication between the child and another person [CITE]. At approximately three years of age,
children begin to guide, plan and reflect on their behaviour by talking to themselves out loud, a
process known as private speech [GILLINGHAM BERK]. The developmental benefits of private
speech are significant due to its ability to assist in overcoming obstacles, by allowing the child to
verbally plan and organise their behaviour before and during they carry out an action [CITE].
Additionally, research has found that private speech often occurs concurrently with pretend play. In a
study performed by Krafft and Berk [CITE], a positive correlation was observed between children that
engaged in pretend play and observations of private speech. Another study (observational) also found
a positive correlation when comparing the rates of private speech between a traditional preschool
which encouraged pretend play, and a Montessori preschool which actively discouraged pretend play.
In sum, private speech is more likely to occur during pretend play. According to Vygotsky, self
regulating thought (a component of executive function) is the internalisation of private speech, also
referred to as inner speech [CITE]. As the final form of speech, inner speech serves the same self
regulating function as private speech, however, it is inaudible [CITE]. Whilst a concrete explanation
of the function of private speech during pretend play has yet to be agreed upon, it has been
hypothesised that private speech is beneficial as it allows the child to distance themselves from the
activity, thus permitting top down control over particular impulses [CARLSON BECK). In other
words, by verbally calculating their options, children are able to see the bigger picture undistracted by
their impulses, allowing them to weigh up the behavioural

Off Balance Research Paper
Fundamentals of an Off Balance When I first joined judo I never expected to learn so many things in
just a small timely manner. Within the first week I already learned how to do throws, takedowns, and
submissions which were the basic essentials to mastering judo. Judo explained in the English
dictionary means an unarmed combat intended to train the body and mind. The objective is to either
throw or takedown an opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue an opponent with a
pin, or force an opponent to submit with a joint lock or a choke. As I continued on doing judo I could
not figure out how to successfully execute a throw during the opponent s brief moment of off balance ,
until one of my upper classmate taught me how to do it correctly because it all depended entirely on
timing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It s a simple push, shove, or pull in a direction that will take the opponent off balance. In order to win,
the opponent must be thrown with control, force, and on their back. By either pushing, shoving, or
pulling an opponent off balance, the execution of the actual throw is made substantially easier since
they will be leaning in that direction. Think of an off balance in Judo like pushing someone forward
and quickly extending a foot out so that they trip and fall. This example shows how timing is
everything, extend the foot too late after the push and they won t trip, too early and they might just
stumble a bit. It s a crude example, but it shows the relationship between off balance and timing of the
execution. Much like how one must quickly extend a foot at the right moment, a Judoka has but a few
seconds to off balance and throw an opponent all in one continuous and fluid motion. The timing of
the throw during the off balance will determine if it is successful. Without the off balance, a throw is
conceivably possible yet substantially more difficult to pull

Rape Culture
#RapeCultureIsWhen
These past two weeks, we have focused on the prevalent rape culture in the United States and how that
affects society. We found that sexual violence has become somewhat of a norm in the U.S., and that it
is no longer broadcasted in the media like the atrocity it is. This, along with the inherent gender
stereotypes within society, contributes to rape culture, which is defined by the Oxford Living
Dictionary as a society or environment whose prevailing social attitudes have the effect of normalizing
or trivializing sexual assault and abuse. Our society bombards us with acts of sexual violence, through
music and visual media. It is treated like a despicable act that must not be tolerated, one where the
perpetrators must be held accountable. Yet, at the same time, it is tolerated, and the perpetrators are
often allowed to roam free without punishment, while their victims are tortured with what happened to
them for the rest of their lives. This is rape culture, and although the term is circulating more and
more, the populous does not regard it as a serious issue, but as a problem made up hysterical feminists
(Rape Culture is When, Maxwell).
One of the works that we analyzed in this unit was a 2013 article by Roxanne Gay, titled The Careless
Language of Sexual Violence. Gay discusses how the media is desensitizing us to the rape and sexual
violence that runs rampant. She tells us about an eleven year old girl who was gang raped by eighteen

will be no physical loss of stockpiles of money or securities. The biggest possible loss of assets would

A Summary Of Traditional Religion In Society
Butler uses traditional religion in the novel to demonstrate the ways in which it can be a destructive or
constructive force in society. Butler demonstrates the dangers of dogmatic, authoritarian religion when
it is used as an excuse to ignore the needs of others and the changes in society. Religion is not
inherently a destructive force; it becomes a destructive force in Lauren s community when it is used to
control and limit thinking because of deference to church leaders such as Lauren s father. There is no
motivation to adapt or change. The religion in Lauren s neighborhood, led by her father, prevents its
members from moving forward as they believe in a literal acceptance of everything in the Bible
(Butler 23). The community s interpretation of the Bible does not help them adapt as society changes.
By taking the Bible literally rather than using it as a guide for understanding the world around them,
as an example of how to extend community to the people who have been ostracized, the community
uses religion as an excuse to focus on themselves rather than focusing on others with further supports
the neoliberalism in their society. Lauren s community is willing to leave the safety of the community

  • 3. Controlling Images of Black Womanhood In Patricia Hill Collins Mammies, Matriarchs, and Other Controlling Images, she illustrates four main stereotypes that Black women face. The first controlling image applied to African American women is The Mammy. The mammy is the faithful, obedient servant to the white family and the stereotype attempts to hide the fact that black women who work for white families are being exploited. By loving and caring for her white children more than her own, the mammy symbolizes the dominant group s perceptions of the ideal black female relationship to elite white male power. The smiling mammy signals her agreement with the situation, seemingly accepting her subordination (Collins, 71). Next is the image of the Black matriarch (Collins, 73). According to the stereotype, they spend too much time away from home, are overly aggressive and unfeminine, and allegedly emasculate their lovers and husbands. This stereotype attempts to control conduct by punishing black women for assertiveness and hides the oppression by making it seem that black women are naturally this way (Collins, 74 75). The third controlling image of Black womanhood is that of the welfare mother, which is linked to Black women s increasing dependence on the welfare state (Collins, 76). This time, the punishment is for failing to work. Rather than being a bad mother for deserting the children, now the concern is being with the children too much and not working. Again, by pinpointing the Welfare Mother as the cause, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Microsoft E Business Suite ( Ebs ) Upgrade Possibly the most comprehensive change to the daily operations will be the Oracle E business suite (EBS) upgrade. This IS will provide many solutions to the operations and maintenance managers by providing total operational oversight at the click of a button. EBS enables users to oversee projects, asset milestones and budgets, and staff projects. It also has a quick report generator for business meetings and scheduling. Another feature that will be highly beneficial is the ability for EBS to integrate and enhance existing programs. It will streamline financials, enhance supply chain management, and fulfill human capital management requirements. Utilizing the asset lifecycle management tool within EBS will enhance financial management of our aircraft and equipment items. It will also calculate the most efficient way to make payments on the aircraft that will maximize the use of our funds and free up income that can be used elsewhere within the budget. Many of the equipment items will require calibration from testing measurements and diagnostics equipment (TMDE) laboratories, which require scheduling and shipping coordination. For this task, the value chain execution tool would be perfect. It will line up and track the schedule of TMDE items that require calibration; once the items come due shipping will be coordinated automatically. There are plenty of applications in the Oracle E Business Suite that the club will utilize for our E Business, as seen in Table 3 in Appendix A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Literature Review Introduction In recent years, the implementation of solar energy and techniques surrounding the management of solar radiation have come to the forefront of the discussion about alternative energy. However, people have different levels of knowledge and awareness about solar energy; they also have varying opinions of solar energy. This leads them to have different perceptions of the implementation of solar energy and techniques surrounding the management of solar radiation. They concluded that this lack of knowledge points to a gap in information about solar energy. Their study also found that there is a nuanced relationship between environmental concern and the use of solar energy, which means that people have very complicated and conflicting attitudes towards gathering and processing data that is related to alternative energy. This affects their willingness to learn about alternative energy sources. A study done by D. Fuchs and M. Arentsen (2002) supports the findings of the Rai Beck study as they found that a lack of knowledge of electricity supply options and the negative consequences that come with electricity use is a barrier to the consumption of renewable energy sources, such as solar energy. Faiers and Neame (2006) found that people who have implemented solar systems at an earlier stage tend to be more knowledgeable on the subject of solar energy. Faiers and Neame also found that knowledge on the subject of solar energy increases the likelihood of buying solar systems. People s opinion of solar energy. • 6. Comparison Of Interstellar, By Christopher Nolan, And... We all dream of an ulterior world, a world in which we picture a perfect life with no struggles, problems, or pandemics. Both Interstellar, by Christopher Nolan, and Station Eleven by Emily Mandel, depict their characters as struggling not only with survival, but their sense of their own identity and security. Within Station Eleven, the saying, survival is insufficient is a recurring theme of Interstellar as well. While there are some differences in the characters and themes within Interstellar and Station Eleven, the similarities are the connections to their identity in which they adapt to the force of change within their world. As the characters struggle with adapting, they cling to certain things that allow them to remain sane. As a result, the characters feel like they have a purpose again due to their struggle for survival. Within their harsh and collapsing worlds, Murph and Kirsten are the puzzle pieces that connect their stories together. For example, Murph cracks the code of the theory of gravity with the help of her ghost, her father within the third dimension, providing her the missing information that saves their planet from extinction. All that time, Murph tediously trying to figure out what her ghost was trying to communicate, Murph finally makes the realization that he came back! It was him! All this time... I... Size and speed he told the San Francisco Chronicle. What does GM Reggie McKenzie think about all of this? He can do it all Kevin Patra of nfl.com reports. Murray was once asked to move to linebacker in college, but he now has a chance to make fools of those coaches. Latavius Murray started for the Raiders at the tail end of last season, and from the sounds of training camp, he looks to stay the starter. Analysis: The Raiders haven t had a 1,000 yard rusher since Darren McFadden in 2010. The leadership from the front office believes that s going to change this year. Coaches have raved about his talent, but Murray was also absent the majority of his rookie year with a foot injury. Sources say he feels 100% and ready to go this season. We ll see ... Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt believes that Walker should only miss a couple days of work, and no broken bones have been reported yet. Analysis: It appears that the injury sustained is not serious. The biggest thing for Walker at this point is to grow a chemistry with rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota. With the injury being a small deal, Walker remains to be a solid choice at TE in all formats. Nelson Agholor, Wide Receiver Philadelphia Eagles Source Philadelphia Inquirer It has been reported that rookie wide receiver Nelson Agholor is taking first team reps. It involved the majority of the world s countries including which eventually formed the two opposing military alliances the Allies and the Axis. It was the largest war in history, and involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. The major countries threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort. World War II has had the most fatalities and injuries of any war in human history, accumulating 50 million to 85 million fatalities, with most being civilians in the Soviet Union and China. World War 2 had events such as the genocide of Jews orchestrated by Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party, bombings, starvation, disease and the use of nuclear weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki which was the first use of nuclear weapons in history. During the war the royal navy had noticed that aircraft carriers were becoming the ultimate ships for naval warfare, and that the royal navy s former naval superiority in terms of their battleships had become irrelevant. The royal navy had noticed that battleships could no longer fulfil their roles in a cost effective manner. They were too big, too expensive to build and maintain, and their crews too large. Due to this the royal navy was an early innovator in aircraft carrier design, introducing armoured flight decks, in place of the battleships. Stages of Economic Reform in China China had gone through a major reformation that is called Socialism with Chinese characteristics that started in late 1978, sparked by a very influential politician and leader, Deng Xiaoping. The reformation is carried out in different stages. It is very important to understand these stages, as each stage is the prerequisite for China to move to another stage. Large scale of government planning is heavily involved throughout the reformation. Despite having to go through financial crisis couple of times, globally and throughout Asia, China seemed to respond quickly and effectively to handle these difficult situations. As of today, China remains as an admiration and aspiration for not only countries in Asia, but also around the world. According to Tian (1996), there are three stages of economic reform in China. The first stage is characterized by economic liberalization. This stage was said to be the most remarkable stage as it has greatly changed the Chinese people s values, thinking and behavior. The changes were first introduced to people in rural areas and later to other industries and geographic areas. The first stage involved a lot of efforts to the development of foreign trade. China began to adopt decentralized decision making and various types of incentive mechanisms. China has been using its abundant supply of labor effectively since then. The mastering of technology played a huge role in the development in civilizations however science wasn t as much of a concern to people in prehistory and didn t become very common till the first civilizations and even then it was only that of practical science that could be used by the everyday person. The only science that was truly studied and appreciated by early humans was astronomy and that was able to help in the development of calendars. The first things humans had been there gifted evolutionary tools of thumbs which allowed them to grasp things and create new things with and the other was speech which allowed the communication of ideas. Another very important technology was the control of fire which allowed humans the ability to cook their food, use it to move into colder climates, kept wild animals away, and very important because now humans no longer needed to depend solely on the sun as a light and heat source. While most of us become stressed out and suffer financially from taxes, it is a known fact that we enjoy many of the benefits of the process of taxation. To look at it from a positive point of view, we must remember a few important parts of our lives that are made possible from taxes. These include new highway construction and repairs, the building and maintenance of public parks and facilities, our law enforcement agencies, emergency services, and much of the health care system; all courtesy of taxes. This assignment will discuss the government s need to raise and lower taxes and the outcome it has on the GDP and net personal income and other key factors that play part in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Typically, when the government raises taxes our gross income remains the same allowing for a loss of personal net income. As our net personal income decreases the amount of disposable income we have also shrinks. This effects the economy in a negative way because people spend less which essentially decreases the income of the businesses that they normally buy their goods and services from, which ultimately leads to a decrease in the total tax revenue that was enforced to help the economy to begin with. Furthermore, just as too low taxes over a period of time can have detrimental effects, having too high taxes can produce detrimental effects as well. When taxes are increased it seems that the productivity of employees seems to decrease, thus businesses suffer. This seems to be because people tend to decrease their output at work because they feel they are not getting as much money per hour as the human effort they put forth should be paid for (Congressional Budget Office, 2005). As people begin to spend less and there is a lower demand, the supply becomes higher and essentially just sits in storage. Depression is a mood disorder causing a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. (Dictionary 2015) Many people view depression and sadness as the same thing. • 17. Symbols In Heart Of Darkness Africa s Darkness Darkness refers to the evil acts of another person. These evil acts can symbolize darkness in any situation, such as violence, discrimination, and other cruel acts that people experience daily. Acts of darkness could cause harm to an individual physically or emotionally. In the novel, Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, the word darkness is used to symbolize many events that happened in the continent of Africa. Three events that symbolize the word darkness are the Europeans cruel behaviors, Kurtz s selfishness, and Marlow s sexist statements. One event in the novel that displayed darkness was when the Europeans were cruel to the Africans. The main character, Marlow, went on a voyage to the Congo River. When Marlow arrived in Africa, he recognized that the Africans were being treated in an evil manner. In the novel, Marlow states, They were dying slowly it was very clear. • 19. Summary Of Michael Jordan And The New Capitalism Walter LaFeber s essay, Michael Jordan and the New Capitalism: America on Top of Its Game, examines the ways that capitalism, along with high tech communication, is conquering the world, one person or in this case one pair of feet at a time. Beginning as a basketball prodigy, rising to an international phenomenon, and finally a seductive commercial ideal, Jordan is a true example of how our American corporations have used technology in a brave way to expand all over the world. Through LaFeber s examination of Nike and its power over the global, along with Jordan s background, a lot is revealed about American society. In 1999, when this essay was published, something as simple as a cellphone was a revolution to the American people. Conversations anywhere with no wires involved! Wow! Looking back now, American seemed pretty simple in 1999. This is the same for Michael Jordan once upon a time, Jordan was JUST a basketball player. LaFeber s essay illustrates for us the rise of the young Jordan from his middle class family in racist North Carolina through his college years and eventually into the NBA where he became an international sports icon. LaFeber tells the story of how Jordan caught the eye of Nike CEO Phil Knight and goes on to explain how Knight transformed Jordan into the face of a multi billion dollar international corporation. LaFeber also fills us in on race and sports issues surrounding Jordan and how that played a part in Nike s growth. LaFeber shows us how race effected middle class Michael Jordan at a young age and how he was able to overcome this and grow into the star he is today. There is often a chief product that keeps a business afloat even in the rough times. McDonalds has the Big Mac, Apple has the iPod, and Nike has Jordan. In the essay, LaFeber speaks about the types of business deals that fueled Jordan s career. The new business strategies of the shoe company Nike, helped escalate Jordan to the level of global fame he is today. Nike was an American company which produced and sold a majority of their shoes in other countries. Here, LaFeber illustrates how the world interacted with itself, and ultimately how globalization took off. LaFeber identifies Jordan at the center of a new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The concerns and debates within the international community regarding the proliferation of nuclear weapons to more sovereign states in the post Cold War era have led to many international law instruments in attempts to contain these weapons of mass destruction. Treaties such as the Treaty on the Non Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the Test Ban Treaty of 1963, international organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO), along with United Nations Security Council resolutions and advisory opinions from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) have all played roles in attempting to contain and reduce nuclear weapons in the international community. However, have these treaties, advisory opinions, resolutions, and creation of international organizations been effective in curtailing sovereign states from obtaining and testing nuclear weapons? • 24. The Business s Planning And Control Policy BUDGETING In the most recent years budgets are considered to be one of the key factors about the business s planning and control policy (Thomas, 1983, p. 133). Financial budgets show the business s strategy concerning the following year compiled by financial statements, plus they are supposed to be the policy used in order to evaluate the managerial performance and be the principle of the management system (ibid). Budgets are considered to be attached to the concept of control. It is really essential that firms create a written project that formulates which will be the objectives of the company, what kind of strategies should be followed and what outcomes are more likely, also known as performance targets (Merchant Van der Stede, 2012, p.306). According to Drury (2004, p. 593) budgeting is affected by the fulfillment of the deep rooted plan for the following year and, due to the shorter preparation boundary, budgets are supposed to be accurate and particularized. Budgets are a straightforward evidence of what should be anticipated to be accomplished throughout the duration of the budget period. According to Hansen and Mowen (2003, p.992) Budgetary slack is the process of padding the budget by overestimating costs and underestimating revenues . The key to understanding Wiesel, then, is his memoir in the form of a novella, Night. Lev Vygotsky Pretend Play Free from adult obligations and unburdened by serious responsibilities, children are likely to spend many of their days role playing imaginative scenarios, an activity known as pretend play [CITE CITE]. Typically appearing around the age of twelve months, pretend play is initially central to the self, before expanding to include peers and objects [CITE]. As well as being an effective way to keep children entertained, prominent psychologist Lev Vygotsky believed pretend play to be a complex process which fosters the development of vital cognitive operations such as self regulation (impulse control, self direction, planning, and appropriate social behaviour) and symbolic thought (assigning an alternative meaning to something), known together ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Social speech is the first to occur, typically around the age of two, and involves external communication between the child and another person [CITE]. At approximately three years of age, children begin to guide, plan and reflect on their behaviour by talking to themselves out loud, a process known as private speech [GILLINGHAM BERK]. The developmental benefits of private speech are significant due to its ability to assist in overcoming obstacles, by allowing the child to verbally plan and organise their behaviour before and during they carry out an action [CITE]. Additionally, research has found that private speech often occurs concurrently with pretend play. In a study performed by Krafft and Berk [CITE], a positive correlation was observed between children that engaged in pretend play and observations of private speech. Another study (observational) also found a positive correlation when comparing the rates of private speech between a traditional preschool which encouraged pretend play, and a Montessori preschool which actively discouraged pretend play. In sum, private speech is more likely to occur during pretend play. According to Vygotsky, self regulating thought (a component of executive function) is the internalisation of private speech, also referred to as inner speech [CITE]. As the final form of speech, inner speech serves the same self regulating function as private speech, however, it is inaudible [CITE]. Whilst a concrete explanation of the function of private speech during pretend play has yet to be agreed upon, it has been hypothesised that private speech is beneficial as it allows the child to distance themselves from the activity, thus permitting top down control over particular impulses [CARLSON BECK). In other words, by verbally calculating their options, children are able to see the bigger picture undistracted by their impulses, allowing them to weigh up the behavioural ... • 36. Off Balance Research Paper Fundamentals of an Off Balance When I first joined judo I never expected to learn so many things in just a small timely manner. Within the first week I already learned how to do throws, takedowns, and submissions which were the basic essentials to mastering judo. Judo explained in the English dictionary means an unarmed combat intended to train the body and mind. The objective is to either throw or takedown an opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue an opponent with a pin, or force an opponent to submit with a joint lock or a choke. As I continued on doing judo I could not figure out how to successfully execute a throw during the opponent s brief moment of off balance , until one of my upper classmate taught me how to do it correctly because it all depended entirely on timing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It s a simple push, shove, or pull in a direction that will take the opponent off balance. In order to win, the opponent must be thrown with control, force, and on their back. By either pushing, shoving, or pulling an opponent off balance, the execution of the actual throw is made substantially easier since they will be leaning in that direction. Think of an off balance in Judo like pushing someone forward and quickly extending a foot out so that they trip and fall. This example shows how timing is everything, extend the foot too late after the push and they won t trip, too early and they might just stumble a bit. It s a crude example, but it shows the relationship between off balance and timing of the execution. Much like how one must quickly extend a foot at the right moment, a Judoka has but a few seconds to off balance and throw an opponent all in one continuous and fluid motion. The timing of the throw during the off balance will determine if it is successful. Without the off balance, a throw is conceivably possible yet substantially more difficult to pull ... • 37. Rape Culture #RapeCultureIsWhen These past two weeks, we have focused on the prevalent rape culture in the United States and how that affects society. We found that sexual violence has become somewhat of a norm in the U.S., and that it is no longer broadcasted in the media like the atrocity it is. This, along with the inherent gender stereotypes within society, contributes to rape culture, which is defined by the Oxford Living Dictionary as a society or environment whose prevailing social attitudes have the effect of normalizing or trivializing sexual assault and abuse. Our society bombards us with acts of sexual violence, through music and visual media. It is treated like a despicable act that must not be tolerated, one where the perpetrators must be held accountable. Yet, at the same time, it is tolerated, and the perpetrators are often allowed to roam free without punishment, while their victims are tortured with what happened to them for the rest of their lives. This is rape culture, and although the term is circulating more and more, the populous does not regard it as a serious issue, but as a problem made up hysterical feminists (Rape Culture is When, Maxwell). One of the works that we analyzed in this unit was a 2013 article by Roxanne Gay, titled The Careless Language of Sexual Violence. Gay discusses how the media is desensitizing us to the rape and sexual violence that runs rampant. She tells us about an eleven year old girl who was gang raped by eighteen men in ... • 39. Federal Reserve System Analysis The Federal Reserve System regulates the economy of the United States through monetary policy. For instance, the Fed keeps the federal fund rate low to provide lower mortgages, increases investments, and boosts the economy. Alternatively, the Fed manages the economy when the opposite effects take place. When the federal fund rate is high the mortgages increase, reduces investments, and will slow the economy, which means the Fed has to manipulate the interest rates and try to shape economic potentials for the future. There are 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks in the Federal Reserve System which rely on an intrinsic technological infrastructure to keep the member banks connected and all data comprised from all regions backed up in case of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The American people take precautions they see in their best interest when news of catastrophe and possible economic unbalance is being reported. While the Board of Governors and the Fed Chair work in the headquarters building, there is no actual fiscal work being done in this building. Therefore, there will be no physical loss of stockpiles of money or securities. The biggest possible loss of assets would be if the total catastrophe of the building took place with the Board of Governors in the building resulting in the deaths of the seven board members and countless number of employees in the building. Without the appointed board members, the Federal Reserve System may not have a backup plan consisting of alternate board members to fill the role of the recently departed. Without a Board of Governors to oversee the policies and practices of the banks, then more economic ruin could be on the horizon. Who will be responsible for maintaining the economic flow that keeps interest rates down and dollars circulating? This uncertainty will keep Americans from spending more than what is needed for essentials, ultimately slowing the economy, and an absent Board of Governors and Chairman to execute the plan to boost the economy. For instance, the Chairman of the Board of Governors not only manage the member banks and presides over the Board of Governors, but also has to testify before Congress twice a year. In the event that there was no contingency plan for an alternate Board of Governors, the member bank presidents will have to oversee themselves until the President appoints new members and Congress ... • 40. A Summary Of Traditional Religion In Society Butler uses traditional religion in the novel to demonstrate the ways in which it can be a destructive or constructive force in society. Butler demonstrates the dangers of dogmatic, authoritarian religion when it is used as an excuse to ignore the needs of others and the changes in society. Religion is not inherently a destructive force; it becomes a destructive force in Lauren s community when it is used to control and limit thinking because of deference to church leaders such as Lauren s father. There is no motivation to adapt or change. The religion in Lauren s neighborhood, led by her father, prevents its members from moving forward as they believe in a literal acceptance of everything in the Bible (Butler 23). The community s interpretation of the Bible does not help them adapt as society changes. By taking the Bible literally rather than using it as a guide for understanding the world around them, as an example of how to extend community to the people who have been ostracized, the community uses religion as an excuse to focus on themselves rather than focusing on others with further supports the neoliberalism in their society. Lauren s community is willing to leave the safety of the community to have a baptism in big tub of expensive water (Butler 16). Lauren points out that it would be less expensive and less dangerous to be baptized at home in a bath tub, but no one pays attention to her idea. She writes, to adults, going outside to a real church is like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
