An Extension Of The Activities Essay
Research is a systematic, precise and rigorous inquiry or investigation that allows people to
understand the nature of a problem or idea (Grossoehme, 2014; Stringer, 2014). All research can
be visualised as an extension of the activities we engage in day by day, which requires one to
move past the day to day understandings and engage in a more precise and rigorous description,
observation or explanation of the problem or idea (Stringer, 2014).
The general distinction between qualitative and quantitative research is that quantitative research
uses empirical data in the form of numbers, while qualitative research uses empirical data that is not
in the form of numbers, usually words, but there is much more to the research designs than their
use of numerical data or not (Stringer, 2014; Punch, 2009). Qualitative research is associated with
research conducted in the social world, as opposed to quantitative research which focuses on
predicting and controlling phenomena on the physical world, and both have their own way of
thinking and approaches to research and collecting their data (Stringer, 2014, Punch, 2009). For the
purpose of this assignment we will look into the ideas, thinking and approaches of two qualitative
research designs; grounded theory and action research.
Grounded theory
Grounded theory is both a strategy of research and a style of analysis that uses the procedures to
develop a theory grounded in the data, using an inductive, theory discovery method, whose

Kohlberg s Character Analysis Of Erin Pattee Brockovich
Character Analysis
Erin Pattee Brockovich:
Erin, a single mother at 33, is the protagonist in the film. She is shown struggling to find work to
support
her three children who become the driving force for her decisions for a large part of the story.
Initially, Erin displays an attitude that would put her at Stage 1 and Stage 3 of Kohlberg s model
of moral
development. In the first scene she is desperately trying to land a job as a doctor s assistant and
narrates a variety of interests that she possess, which were quite varying, and continually stresses
upon
the fact she is a single mother , with a family of three to provide for.
In the later sequence of the story we find Erin working for a law firm, Masry Vititoe, where she...

George:
George is Erin s neighbor. Driven by his interest in Erin, he gives up his friends and his passion for
motorbikes to look after her children. However when he does not receive due appreciation from Erin
who at this point is completely involved in the Hinkley case, he decides to walk out on her. This
shows
that George was at Stage 2 of Kohlberg s moral development model. He was taking care of Erin s
children in order to win s Erin s love and when he did not get due attention he decided to leave.
Later in the story we see George coming back to Erin when he notices her efforts bringing in
results. At
this point his actions may put him at Stage 3 i.e. Interpersonal Concordance because he comes back
to
Erin and her children at their apparent time of need, to show that he is a good family member.
Event Analysis
Erin gets fired for being absent from work:
Completely taken over by the investigation into the Hinkley case, Erin goes on a search for evidence
against PG E. She talks to families in Hinkley, looks through the records of the water board, and
does
everything in her capacity to gather all the information she could. Meanwhile Ed is unaware of

Movements Rising from Drug Cartels in Mexico
Secure places to visit. In 2006 Mexico was a safe place to visit, but everything changed after Felipe
Calderon took over as new president. After few months of his new position, President Felipe
Calderon decided to send 45,000 soldiers and 5,000 federal police to the state of MichoacГЎn to
eradicate the drug trafficking. He also fired hundreds of dishonest police officers. The drug
trafficking movement is not a new movement. It has been existed for many decades, but now it is
expanding further due to the born of new drug trafficking organizations or cartels. The cartels fight
against each other to win control or to open new trafficking routes into the United States, on their
fights many innocent people die or disappear every day. Residents from some states tired of all the
crimes committed by the cartels and sometimes the authorities; had decided to protect themselves
by forming self defense groups Also, other movement has emerge, since the drug trafficking became
more notorious and dangerous the Narcocultura movement. Mexico in conjunction with United

corruption and the unrestricted demand for drug in the United States, have made Mexico the center

Women In A Room Of One s Own By Virginia Woolf
All throughout time men have been seen as superior to women, creating this long lasting gender
barrier. In the 20th century, women were seen as significantly lower than men. In two passages,
from Virginia Woolf s A Room of One s Own , it depicts the difference between the men s and
women s dining experience which allows the reader to imagine the genderbias. Woolf s rhetorical
choices of imagery and symbolism in both passages creates the differential between men and
women in society.
In the passages from A Room of One s Own, Woolf, through imagery, creates two different social
settings. In the first passage, she has decorative syntax to create images of the whitest cream and
sprouts, foliated as rosebuds. The author creates these pictures

Wanted
Wanted! When you hear, or say that term, the visual that may come to mind may be: criminal,
old western movie, or even a comparison to a relationship. But in relation to the movie Wanted it
stands for nothing but a guy that wanted no more in life but to find his purpose. A lot of us in
this world never actually find our purpose in life, we just kind of settle for what we are able to do.
We go through trials and tribulations to find ourselves, and find anything that will make our lives
more satisfying, including putting ourselves in harms way to do it. This film stars Angelina Jolie,
Morgan Freeman, and James McAvoy, which names all scream a killer movie to me. The theme
represented in this movie is not only deceit and lack of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first theme demonstrated in this movie is Perseverance, which was illustrated in the film by
Wesley, and his determination to go through all the physical test to meet standards of the fraternity.
His whole intention throughout the movie was to prove that he could become more than what he
always has considered himself, which is below average. When Wesley was in training he got beat
up by multiple people in the fraternity, in an attempt to make him physically strong to stand
anything. He learned tasks including fighting, knife work, and also how to curve a bullet. When he
was learning to curve the bullet Sloan, played by Morgan Freeman, states The first time in your life
Wesley, you are in control (Bekmambetov, Wanted). As he shoots multiple bullets and still pierces
the wrong target, Fox then stands in the middle of him and the target and says, shoot the target
(Bekmambetov, Wanted ). As hesitant as he was he knew he had to have confidence in himself to
complete the task. As he shoots around Fox, not knowing if the bullet would hit her, he takes his
shot and hits the correct target. Sloan then says Welcome to the fraternity (Bekmambetov, Wanted ).
He then knew all his hard work had paid off! That part of the movie showed strength and
perseverance.
Another way both themes, deceit and perseverance, were shown was at the end of the movie when

Summary Of Monica Ferrell
Monica Ferrell s, Of the Irresoubleness of Diamonds, Harmless, As Recalled by a Fairy Tale,
Gerburt des Monicakinds, and Beautiful Funeral each employ four different grammatical issues
such as attributive adjectives, finite verb strings, non finite verb strings, active voice and the
known new contract throughout her poems. By incorporating these grammatical issues into her
work, Ferrell intends to develop a clear and sharp image to ignite the imagination of her readers.
The poems Of the Irresoubleness of Diamonds, Harmless, As Recalled by a Fairy Tale, Gerburt
des Monicakinds and Beautiful Funeral were written by poet and novelist Monica Ferrell.
Monica Ferrell was born in New Dehli. She earned her BA from Harvard University and MFA
from Columbia University (Poetry Foundation). Ferrell discusses the role of uncertainty in her
poems. She states, I m trying to let something that wants to come into being do so poetry as
uncovering, rather than invention or rhetoric, and a form of devotion and service . (Poetry
Foundation). By using several grammar techniques Ferrell paints a bright image for her readers to
ponder upon. Ferrell is an atypical poet and uses a variety of forms to convey her simple and lyrical
tone throughout them. One of the reasons that I chose her poems is because of the strong, lyrical
language she uses to convey the imagery and earnest tone. Her attitude throughout these three
poems remains quizzical. Monica

Abstract
Virtual personal Network (VPN) may be a communication network that provides secure knowledge
transmission in an unsecured or public network by mistreatment any combination of technologies.
A virtual association is created across the users who are geographically spread and networks over a
shared or public network, just like the internet. even supposing the info is transmitted during a

This method is named as tunneling. to supply confidentiality to the encapsulated knowledge, the
info is secured by encoding. once knowledge reaches a tunnel finish purpose, the encapsulated
knowledge is decrypted and forwarded to its final destination purpose. VPN permits organizations
to attach to their branch offices or to alternative firms over a public network whereas maintaining
secure communications. The VPN association across the web logically operates as a good space

Short Story Of Short Stories
One thing that s great about short stories is how quickly they can ruin your life. Maybe you start
reading one over your lunch break and, if it s the right one, before that peanut butter cup you
brought for dessert even has a chance to finish its melting shape shift into some kind of sugary
cement, the whole world has been destroyed around you and then rebuilt, and nothing is quite
the same again. This happens whether you like it or not. Great stories practice this violent
beauty on you in a variety of ways: some by making an absurd world familiar (or vice versa),
some with a slow burn, some with a voice that colonizes your thoughts. Some do it quietly,
almost without you even noticing, and some do it with high wire acts of imagination or intellect
that make you into a breathless witness. The trick, then, is finding the right story, one that is
capable of such a thing. This is no easy task. Tastes differ, of course, and it can be confusing to
spot the small boat of a great story on the wide sea of fiction. What any reader can offer you in
terms of guidance is actually the same thing that any good writer can offer you with the story
itself: a way of saying, This is what moved me and made me feel strange and alive in some way;
here, why don t you give it a try? In that spirit and in no particular order, here are ten short stories
you might ve missed that ambushed me with their odd wonder: 1.The Zero Meter Diving Team by

Rhetorical Analysis Of A Man For All Seasons
How can a person stay alive when his own beliefs go against the desires of King Henry? In A
Man for All Seasons, Sir Thomas More struggles to keep his head and morals when faced with
the proposition of King Henry s divorce. As the play progresses, the King s divorce becomes a
pressing issue and More uses rhetoric to go against the divorce and corrupted government. Silence
turns out to be More s most effective method of rhetoric, but towards the beginning and end of the
playhe makes a few key statements to support his argument. During a meeting with Wolsey, More s
skepticism of the divorce is first shown. Wolsey is suggesting support of the divorce so that the
King may conceive an heir with Anne Boleyn. More makes the statement, A dispensation

Throughout the book The Stone Angel, Hagar tells us about her life; and the issues throughout it.

The Last Judgment is the large painting on the inside of Brunelleschi s Dome. A number of
people were responlible for the creation of this painting, which was started as early as 1570
when Vincenzo Borghini drew up a theological program for the painting. Giorgio Vasari was
initially in charge of painting the dome; however, his death in 1574 caused this reasonability to be

Antigone And Creon
The character Creon in Oedipus the King and in Antigone is quite present in both plays. He is a
vital character. In Oedipus the King , Creon was sent to the Oracle of Delphi to find out how the
city could be saved from the plague. He was later accused of being against Oedipus when Creon
brought the news that he was the killer of King Laius, Oedipusmust die to end the plague. After all
the truth was released, Creontries to convince Oedipus to be buried in Thebes when he was dying,
because a prophecy once said that the land would be blessed wherever Oedipus eternally rests. In
Antigone, Creon is the new king of Thebes. One of Antigone s brothers were fighting for the
country and one was fighting against it. Creon s edict was that Eteocles, the brother fighting for
the country, would have a traditional burial and will be honoured. On the other hand, Creon
forbids that Polyneices has a burial. He wants his body to rot because he was fighting against the
country. He proclaims that anyone who buries him will be sentenced to death. By the time Creon
reconsiders and realizes how stubborn he was acting, it is too late and he is cursed with death upon

Bowling for Columbine film by Michael Moore is a film in which its central argument is that
Americans are afraid of each mainly because of the media whose goals are to put fear in the
American community. Unlike several documentaries this one is unique; this film is intended to
appeal to the audience who are against guns or are pro gun control and safety. Across this film,
Moore s takes all of the audience through an exploration of the history of guns and violence, and
with the big question, we all ask when a young adult commits a violent act, whom should we
blame for this? We start off with ethos or credibility. One way Moore shows credibility is when he
not only interviewed one side of the gun issues but both. An example would be when he

Corporate Interests and Their Impact on News Coverage
Hypothesis
There is no denying that news media is big business. The complete coverage of stories and
investigative reports are certainly at risk with the rise of media as a business, rather than strictly
a service to the public. Over the past few years, there have been a number of cases where
television stations or news publications have killed news stories or forced reporters to slant stories
due to pressure from advertisers or those in power at the news. This paper will attempt to examine
the relationship between social responsibility and news editors, and apply ethical theories to explain

Carol Guensburg examines the ethical dilemmas of news reporting that involve the media agency s
owner in the December 1998 issue of American Journalism Review (p. 10). In When the story is
about the owner, she determines that it is up to the individual journalists and news operations to
continue reporting important stories, regardless of the impact they may have on corporate or
advertising interests (Guensburg, p. 11).
American Journalism Review s October 1998 article by Jane Kirtley, Second guessing news
judgment, looks at the issue of FCC regulations of news coverage (p. 86). She notes that having
the governmental agency get involved in news coverage would likely lead to the consequence that
broadcasters will be discouraged from covering controversial issues at all (Kirtley, p. 86).
In addition to these and many other articles referencing corporate interests in the media, an
organization called Project Censored does annual research to explore and publicize stories of
national importance on issues that have been overlooked or under reported by the mainstream news
media (Jensen, p. 14).

Reducing The Risk Of Ventilator Acquired Pneumonia
Reducing the Risk of Ventilator Acquired Pneumonia through Head of Bed Elevation The
American Thoracic Society (1996) defines ventilator acquired pneumonia or VAP as the specified
type of nosocomial pneumonia that occurs after the first 48 hours of initiating mechanical
ventilation. One of the major causes of mortality among infections acquired at the hospital is VAP.
Once a patient develops VAP he/she will have to spend to longer amount of time in the ICU (Rello

The goal of this experiment is to compare and contrast between the effects of the present standard
degree of bed head elevation (i.e. 25 В°) and 45В° elevation on the occurrence of VAP. The
incidence of VAP can be prevented/reduced in the hospitals by taking nursing measures.
Elevation of head of bed is one among them. Nurses should maintain the angle of 45 degree of
bed head elevation all times to reduce the risk of aspiration. The flat position increases the risk of
aspiration. The main purpose of this study is to understand whether or not increasing the standard
degree of bed head elevation will help minimize the occurrence of VAP. Methods of study The
method adopted was quantitative in nature, using a randomized controlled trial. In order to achieve
this, 71 adult patients were assessed for eligibility and among this 59 met the given criteria. They
were randomly categorized into treatment groups consisting of 29 patients and a control group
consisting of 27 patients. The randomization was done by the same nurse who recruited the patients

Comparison of Toc vs Lean
Assignment #5:
Comparison of Theory of Constraints (TOC) versus Lean Manufacturing
MBA 571
November 22, 2011
In today s business world, competition is fierce and manufacturers are struggling to squeeze out
operational costs reductions. To stay in competition, more and more organizations are trying to
determine what improvement method will work best and fit best with their culture. Each
improvement methodology appears to be driving toward common tools and concepts. However,
different methodologies begin the journey from different perspectives. Even though each
improvement methodology contributes valuable concepts, ideas and techniques to every
organization not all of them serve to the needs of organization if leadership doesn t ... Show more

Advantages of TOC Even though these techniques diverge in a number of key areas and it can be
seen that TOC has several advantages. Lean sees an organization as a collection of parts and aims a
local optimization system where TOC focuses on a local action with holistic optimization for the
organization.
The Theory of Constraints (TOC) is a relatively new managerial philosophy that has been steadily
evolving since the early 1980s. TOC does advocate buffers at inventory at selected points to ensure
that neither the constraint nor the customer is left waiting. Lean aims to reduce lead time and
inventory and thus costs by eliminating waste; TOC aims to reduce lead time and inventory in
order to gain capacity, increase Throughput (i.e. the rate at which money is generated through the
sale of products) and provide a competitive edge thus enabling the business to grow.
Lean promotes maximum resource efficiency,

Fidget Spinners Essay
Something showed up at early 2017, and it instantly became a massive hit. Guess who they are.
Yes, fidget spinners. Small fidget toys made from plastic or metal, spinning on our fingers to
their massive boom. These toys might look simple and small, but their popularity isn t. They re
well known all over the world. So, what do they hide behind their metal bearings? Where and
when do they come from? Sit back and get yourself a cup of coffee, as I will take you on this trip,
uncovering fidget spinners, and examining their reason of existence, in terms of science and art.
Before cracking these spinners deeper, we ll first go through the history of fidget spinners. There
are no clear evidence about it s original inventor, but there are indeed some other evidences that
could lead into the creation of this small toy. Catherine Hettinger, 62 years old, is one of it. She
is a chemical engineer, and she said that she s a tinkerer. Surprisingly, she doesn t have any kind of
connection towards any companies that are producing this popular toy. She had her first 2 patents
for a placemat that could help people on their diet. Her third patent, granted in 1997, is a circular
device made from a single piece of plastic that spins on the tip of a finger. She called this device a

The First Personal Digital Assistant
The first Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) was introduced to the American market by Apple in
1993. It was called the Apple Newton MessagePad. John Sculley, Apple s then CEO coined the
term Personal Digital Assistant specifically for this device. It was created to be just that an assistant
to the user. The Newtonboasted handwriting recognition, plug in memory cards, IR
communications, and with the purchase of an additional modem Newton could also fax and send
email (Zeldes 2005). It could take notes, remember contacts and manage calendars. The Newton
was considered quite innovative at its debut, despite its fairly bulky size and legendary (often
comical) issues with the handwriting recognition software. While Newton was far... Show more

introduced. Each one promised to ease the life of a person on the go and many delivered on that
promise. These truly were personal digital assistants, keeping your contact lists, reminding you
of your appointments and sending email. However, many of these formerly innovative devices
are just a footnote in PDA history because today s digital assistant bears scant resemblance to its
ancestors. Typing an email on your PDA is passГ© now voice recognition commands the world

mainstream in 2011 on Apple s very popular iPhone. Siri wakes and responds to your commands
after you speak the wake words Hey, Siri. In order to assist you, Siri is always listening for that
activation phrase. Always. Once a user has activated Siri with those words, Siri springs into
action. Simple commands that can be handled on the iPhone or iPad itself, such as asking it to

Why did Fanon Argue for a Violent Struggle Against...
In the second half of the twentieth century, started a process of decolonization, first in Asia and
then in Africa. In 1949, India was one of the first country to gain its independence, followed by
Burma, Malaysia, and Ceylon. In Africa the decolonization started a few years later, first in Libya
and Egypt, and in the rest of the continent afterwards. The main colonists were the Great Britain
and France. The history has shown that Great Britain succeeded to decolonize generally in peace
while France had much more problems to give up its colonies, which led to numerous conflicts
opposing the colonists and the colonized. It has been the case especially in Algeria where a
murderous war lasted almost eight years. The philosopher Frantz Fanon... Show more content on

studying the Algerian situation and joined the National Liberation Front, in favour for the Algerian

government of the Algerian Republic in Tunis. Fanon wrote about colonialismand he praised the
use of violence against colonists in his book The Wretched of the Earth, which was published
the same year he died of leukaemia, in 1961, and two years before the independence of Algeria

was mixed race, Fanon has experienced racism when he arrived in France. Thus it is not
surprising that he identified to the Algerian people who were colonized by the French, and more
generally to all colonized and oppressed populations. But the paradox, as Henri Louis Gates

Primaries Pros And Cons
Abstract
This paper will talk about the presidential primaries in the United States of America. It will
explain what a primary election is, and where it comes from historically, also how it fits into
today s society. Another topic it will cover is how the primary process has played out so far this
year, how some of the contenders are currently faring in the race for presidency. It will also cover
the strong suits of the primaries and some of the major flaws of the primaries. The last topic this
paper will cover is whether or not the people of the United States should understand and care about
the presidential Primaries.
Introduction
The Presidential Primaries is a system put in place to help chose the best candidates for being the
President of the United States of America. Now whether it is or is not an effective system is yet
to be discussed later on in the paper, but it was put in place to help better to represent the people
of the U.S. The presidential Primaries is very crucial to the candidates running for presidency. It
allows the public to see who the candidates are, and how they conduct a campaign against one
another.

Yellow Wallpaper Influence
Wallpaper, in general, is never appealing, but usually most wallpaper does not make one go
completely crazy and lose their mind. Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the author of The Yellow
Wallpaper, created a wallpaper that did just that. The Yellow Wallpaper is a short story about a
husband and wife, who go to a summer house for the wifes depression. John, the husband, is a
doctor and is responsible for treating his wife. His treatment for her illness is to keep her cooped
up in an old nursery room with hideous yellow wallpaper. The wife, who is also the narrator of
the story, slowly becomes more and more obsessed with the wallpaper pattern as she is forced to
stay in that room. The pattern, the wife believes, is taking the shape of a woman trapped behind
the wallpaper. The story ends when the wife completely loses it and tears down the wallpaper in an
effort to free the trapped woman. This causes her husband to faint and she continues to creep
around the room. Gilman s influence for this challenging story comes mostly from her own
personal background. The Yellow Wallpaper

Gilman was unhappy because she felt as though her marriage and being a mother weighed her
down. She only got married because it was expected of women at the time, as one article points
out about Gilman. Charlotte followed tradition and married Stetson on May 2, 1884, though still
fearful that her marriage would put an end to her hopes of having a career (Beekman). In The
Yellow Wallpaper , the wife clearly is not pleased with her marriage, just like Gilman. Several times
throughout the story, she makes comments that hint at her unhappiness. One example of this is in
the beginning of the story, John laughs at me, of course, but one expects that in marriage (Gilman
1). One does not expect that in a happy marriage and the wife seems to know that, but really has no

The Day Of The Family Farm Days
The days of the family farm days are over. For decades, there has been such an exorbitant
consumer demand for pork products. The consumer demand is so high that pork is now a
multibillion dollar industry, Swann (2014). Now the family farm has evolved into what critics call
factory farms due to high consumer demand for affordable meatporkproducts in the United States

This mass production calls for animals to be forced to live in confined spaces and operate a

Those in the business of selling pork have their own argument claiming that they do not mistreat

can be used to deceive. They assert that there is a moral challenge to deceive and communicate
(p.24). Moore (2014), also asserts that there are similarities between The Republic and
Machiavelli s The Prince (1513), who advise rulers how to manage media to hold onto power by
using deceit if necessary, rather than by cultivating virtue in individual citizens. The pork industry,
similar to Plato s philosophy in The Republic, is a proponent of the abuse of power and a little
necessary dishonesty (p,25).

Negating the Use of the Death Penalty Essay
Negating the Use of the Death Penalty America has been deluded into believing that the death
penalty is an effective deterrent for homicide. It is a hot issue, a favorite amongst politicians. But
what these political pundits fail to mention is that conclusive evidence proves that not only is the
death penalty an ineffective crimedeterrent, it is also an expensive, unjust and undignified policy for
any government to enact. The dignity preserved by any government that lawfully practices
execution is highly contested, as the death penalty is an inhumane and archaic method of
punishment. Perhaps in this instance we can supplement human dignity with the word justice,

their credit, Japan does not have a policy of executing children as we practice in the United

justice? But van den Haag insists that the threat of execution is enough of a deterrent to warrant
its use. But let us be honest. How plausible is it to execute children? Because crimes of passion
are not capable of receiving the death penalty, we must assume that those who commit homicide
have the ability to comprehend and take responsibility for their actions. We cannot vote in this
country until we are 18; one can assume that this is a generally accepted age of responsibility. So
how can we expect a child who commits a murder to have a full understanding of his actions? Some
of our congressmen and senators have proposed lowering the age of execution to 13, despite the
fact that basic human rights declarations consider the execution of anyone under the age of 18 to be
a gross violation of natural and understood rights standards. Van den Haag also claims that the
imposition of the death penalty maintains the dignity of a society because it creates security,

Anti-Semitism In Religion
I believe Christianity began as a religion of anti Semitism, however, I do not believe that tradition
remained the same in modern day society. Anti Semitism refers to the practice of discrimination
and hostility toward those who practice Judaism. Historically, anti Semitism was a long standing
custom of whichever empire or ruling power was in charge of Jerusalem and that custom did not
exclude Christians when they eventually rose to power during the time of the Roman Empire. In
fact, several early Christian homilies and dialogues were spoken against the practice of Judaism,
primarily because of their role in the death of Jesus. However, I believe that in modern times the
practice of anti Semitism has moved away from a primary religious standpoint and become more
focused on cultural practices. The first homily written against the Jewsthat blamed them for the
death of Jesus was preached by Melito of Sardis. The Bishop claims that the death of Jesus is the
Jews extraordinary crime, and condemns them for their role in it (143). Moreover, in this sermon,
Melito outlines the reasons why the Church of Christianityhas displaced the Jewish people and
made their religion irrelevant. Melito sates that the type had value/ prior to its realization/ and the

level. Although, even work and line management has performed higher than 60% that is a point of

there is 73% of the staff that satisfied with their team and only 30% positive answer with

engagement level, the changes in it would be crucial for it, unlike the job satisfaction with the

Modern Drama And Modern Criticism
Nothing is harder to bring to life for a modern reader than the theatre of the past, Michael Booth
states in his book, English Melodrama, as an opening to his chapter the character of melodrama .
Booth resumes by saying that to reconstruct extinct theaters, to inhabit them once again with noisy
audiences, and to light them with flickering candles, harsh hissing gas, and soft multi colored
pools of limelight picking out actors long forgotten, acting in old fashioned ways in front of
creaking flats and jerking wings, is to make dead eyes see and dead ears hear. After research on
this topic, I realized that the task is even more difficult when the kind of theatre under discussion is
now extinct, and toward which modern dramaand modern criticism is unsympathetic. This is the
case with the melodramaof the nineteenth century, the most popular dramatic form of its age, a
form that depended more on graphic exhilaration and the thrill of the moment qualities almost
beyond critical recall than anything ever written for the stage. Now it is all gone, and I will
hopefully through this essay bring some of this back to life. Yet because of its energy and
vividness, something of its nature can be imparted. Melodrama had never been rated highly by
dramatic critics or historians, whose most contemptuous word is melodramatic. To describe and
raise it out of the neglect and contumely where it has generally remained all this century, to show it

Coffield s body was the first of many found in or near the Green River in a murder spree that

chosen this stretch of highway to hunt for his victims. The women found here lived in such ways
that no one really noticed if they went missing. This proved even more problematic for the task

How The World Has Changed Over Time Essay
While interviewing an individual from another generation, my father, I learned a lot about how the
world has changed over the past years. Many things such as events that had happened during their
prime years actually still affect people today. It is amazing and shocking to see the differences that
have come about in the past 60 years. The views in working, education, role models, and life
changing moments have all changed over time. While interviewing my father I had many
interesting statistics come up that I have never even thought about or questioned. My father was
born in 1955, making him currently 60 years of age. He grew up on a farm in which he hated

Rhetorical Analysis On Civil Disobedience
Civil Disobedience Similar to Douglas, Thoreau writes against the injustice of slavery and the
despotism of government. Thoreau starts his essay by stating that Government is best which
governs least since government becomes despotic with corruption. He further adds in his essay
Government is best which governs not at all with the same sentiment of civil disobedienceagainst
the injustices of government. For that reason Thoreau makes the argument that Government not
practical because it does not pass the test of morality.
Moreover, Thoreau s repudiation of the government s standing army is why the government fails
this test of morality. For Thoreau, government is the mode by which people execute their will.
Therefore, it is the people who have the right to disobey civil government because it draws its
strength from the will of the majority. His criticism extends to the power of the strong, since the
power of the strong does not translate to the justice and question the people s resignation of their
rights to the legislator.
Lastly, Thoreau argues that government lost some of its integrity. For Thoreau, when the tyranny
becomes great and unendurable, men have the right to revolution and the right to refuse their
allegiance and resist government. Even voting for the right is doing nothing for it according to
Thoreau. Even in his criticism of voting, Thoreau expresses that people would vote to abolish
slavery once they feel indifferent about it. Furthermore, Thoreau considered the Constitution a form
of human law based on moral principle. Therefore, the Constitution should not subject people to
relinquish their natural rights, and men should resist civil government in return.
Bartelby
In agreement with Thoreau s philosophy of civil disobedience, Melville argues about the political
consequences for resisting government through his story of Bartelby. This character illustrates the
connection between Fredrick Douglas life as a slave to the system that turned him into a machine.
Bartelby s story as an scrivener, narrates the life of a man who becomes aggravated with the
system in place, and disobeys the orders of his master the lawyer.
Evidenced by his refusal to work, Bartelby seals his fate as he faces

The Pros And Cons Of Mass Surveillance
In early June 2013, the Guardian newspaper reported that the US National Security Agency (NSA)
was collecting the telephone records of tens of millions of American citizens (Greenwald 27).
Edward Snowden was the source of the report. He is a computer expert, who used to work for the
CIA of the United States, but was turned into a whistleblower and exposed the U.S. government s
secret surveillance programs. The leaks by him show that the NSA and British intelligence agencies
have had a consistently evolving set of tools and methods for gleaning information from hard to
reach systems. Prior to this event, most U.S. citizens had not known that their government agencies
had been surveilling their private data. Law enforcement and intelligence agencies have used
surveillance so that they can glean information, detect or prevent crime and terrorism, and
investigate them after they took place. Surveillance is defined as manipulating close observations
of an individual or a group. As technology like smart phones and social network services develops,
the vast amount of information about individuals and their opinions has become readily available
in the Internet and associated digital devices. Most of them are unencrypted and can be easily
exposed to prying eyes. The reason why mass surveillance becomes the center of the controversy is

Driving While on The Phone Essay
As technology advances, people become notorious for using their electronics in inappropriate
situations. Teenagers in present day commonly text at the dinner table, while crossing a street, and
even while driving. Not only do teenagers text, their parents do, as well. Texting is a frequent fad
among the young adults, it also a convenient method for parents to keep in contact with their
children. People nowadays have to be in contact with friends and family at every moment of the
day especially while driving it is the equivalent of driving under the influence, using hand held

One simulation showed talking on a cell phone is much more dangerous than talking to a
passenger; the study concluded this because a passenger can take an active role in making the
driver attentive of traffic and of course facilitate with directions. Recently, in Columbus, Ohio, a
news report reported that the State Highway Patrol logged fifty more fatalities than in the same
period for the prior year. The Highway Patrol noted that nineteen fatalities were the result of
distracted driving. The problems of distracted driving exist throughout the United States. For
example, this year Wisconsin enacted a law prohibiting texting while driving due to the danger of
distracted driving. In New York, students at the State University of New York Fredonia (SUNY)
sponsored a texting awareness week to make college students more aware of the risks of distracted
driving. The dangers of distracted driving have led the United States Department of Transportation
to make a major initiative to develop solutions to end distracted driving. The impact of distracted
driving has led President Obama to declare December, 2010 as National Impaired Driving
Prevention Month. Many states have addressed the problem by prohibiting texting while driving.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, thirty states, the District of Colombia and
Guam ban texting while driving. However, the bill to ratify such a ban failed in the Arizona

Comparing Baz Luhrmann s Romeo And Juliet
When people think about Shakespeare they may think it is serious and boring, but really it
doesn t have to be. The stories can be exciting and dramatic to all ages. A director named Baz
Luhrmann made a film that was a modern day version of Romeo and Juliet. In Baz Luhrmann s
film of Romeo and Juliet, he made decisions regarding actors, setting and costumes because he
wanted to attract a younger crowd since Romeo and Juliet is a story about two young lovers.
One way Luhrmann attracted a young crowd was by making the time and place of the film
more modernized. Luhrmann s film was located in Verona beach, NY, instead of filming in
Verona, Italy. Filming in Verona beach gives the film more of a interesting feel for young adults
to watch, because some of the play is in the city area and some is on the beach. In contrast to,
Verona, Italy, where it was filmed in a boring and old town. In addition, the film is set in the 1900
s instead of the 1500 s which makes the film feel more modernized. Changing the setting of the
film to be more modern appeals a younger crowd because it makes the film less tedious.... Show

In the play, the Montagues wear hawaiian shirts, and the Capulets wear suits. At the Capulet s
party, Romeo dresses up as a knight and Juliet dresses up as an angel. This was clever of
Luhrmann because it relates to the phrase, Carried away by a man in knight in shining armour.
Another clever decision he makes was when he has Tybalt dress as a devilish looking man. This
is coincidentally showing that he is Romeo s devil and is always trying to ruin Romeo s life.
These costumes make it easier to follow and understand the story, tell characters apart, and make
the Shakespeare story less formal. This contributes to the interest of the younger eye because a
more modern looking play is more

Reflection Paper On Reading Skills
From working with Joe for the past few weeks, I noticed there were a few different reading skills
that he could use some practice with. One of the first things I noticed while working with Joe
was his fluency while reading. During the running records I had done with Joe, I was able to
listen to his reading pace, and noticed that he only took pauses when he needed to take a breath.
I also noticed that he used no expression while reading; not even when there was quotation marks
present. Another reading skill that Joe lacked was good use of a decoding strategy. When Joe
was presented with a word he didn t know, he would use picture cues, but when that didn t work,
or when illustrations were minimal, Joe would simply skip over the word. When I asked Joe
what he liked to do when he came across a word he didn t know he said, I don t know . I got a
similar answer when I asked him if he knew what his teacher, and friends did when they came
across a word they didn t know. This observation showed me that Joe could really benefit from
having a decoding strategy presented to him in a minilesson. On the first day of co teaching; my
partner and I focused on teaching a decoding strategy, so we could practice that strategy if needed
while doing a fluency exercise the next time we met. Taberski mentions how working with words,
and decoding strategy will help students move from hesitancy to fluency (pg 87). Both Alexa and I

Grief In The Story Of Tom Brennan By J. C Burk
The novel The Story Of Tom Brennan by J.C Burk is about the aftermath of drink driving and the
effects it has on the families. This review aims to highlight why I believe the themes of loss, grief,
and conflict are so significant to my generation when discussing the issue surrounding drink
driving. I found this book not relatable, to me Tom wasn t realistic. Personally, I don t find Toms
characterto be unrealistic, he was too dramatic and his reactions to situations were unreasonable.
The novelhas redeeming aspects when it come to Joe, Kylie, Brendan and Gran were more
realistic to me, these characters drew me in more. The Loss is presented throughout the novel.
The Story of Tom Brennan shows the families dealing with some form of loss after the drink
driving incident. Luke and Nicole s families both lose their children from the accident. Luke and

The Role Of Homeostatic Mechanisms Of Homeostasis Essay
Homeostasis 3.4 Hannah Miller
Introduction
My investigation is about Homeostasis. Homeostasis is maintaining a physiological system in a
higher animal to maintain co ordinated responses. It tries to maintain the environmental changes,
and a condition of balance or equilibrium within its internal environment. Homeostasis is the
process of keeping everything constant. The higher animal I have chosen is Humans. The reason
why I have chosen Humans is because there are so many homeostatic mechanisms available for this
higher animal. Homeostatic mechanisms are important because it maintains your core body
temperature so the enzymes within the body are able to run at an optimum level. (pers comm
[Nicole Mitchell], 2016) If an enzyme get too cold the process of bonding with proteins will slow
until they are unable to bond, if an enzyme is too hot it will de nature meaning its shape will
change and be unable to bond with proteins, both being too cold and too hot will kill the host as
organs are unable to function without proteins . It regulates the body temperature so you don t heat
up too much. A negative feedback loop is important because it allows the mechanism to stop, so you
don t die. The mechanism I have chosen to do for my investigation are thermoregulation
(temperature) and blood pressure. A human is an Endotherm (warm blooded). Endotherm is an
organism which generates heat to maintain its body temperature and

Social And Structural Violence As A Colonial Legacy
The question of agency becomes apparent when discussing HIV, especially in relation to gender
dynamics. Jennifer Hirsch s ethnographic research, The Secret (2014), reveals how marriage and
extra marital sex intersect with modes of power and structural violence in turn putting couples
(mostly women) at risk for HIV infection. This phenomenon is linked to historical, economic, social
and cultural variants of inequality that suppress women to a certain set of practices that makes
them reside outside the peripheries of society, on the basis of their gender. In turn, women become
token bodies who carry agency but simultaneously not exercisers of their own agency. Thus, this
paper will be an analysis of how power dictates and enforces certain... Show more content on

As women are confronted by structural violence, social practices and cultural contexts in which
their ability to mitigate the risk of HIV/AIDS or to harness protection is reduced on the basis of
their gender, this in turn plays into underlying socially imbedded power structures. As women
experience a lowered sense of agency, they virtually have no ability to mitigate their risks of HIV.
This denial of agency prevents women from negotiating sex in general, let alone protected or safe
sex, including condom use.
Structural violence is defined as violence that is structured by historically given processes and
forces that conspire to constrain agency . Therefore, we can asses that a byproduct of colonial
rule was the naturalization of gender distinctions that are rooted in forms of structurally imbedded
violence. This is apparent in how colonial/Eurocentric categorizations of man and women have
become a defining feature of gender categorizations. An example of this is the colonial domestic
ideology, a categorization of gender that was rooted in scientific rigor . According to this theory,
innate and demonstrable biological differences defined fundamental differences between males and
females . These differences thus structured and dictated differing patterns of behavior for men and
women . Men were to be active in the public world, competing for power and wealth; while women
were to be the sanctuary of the

Archeology Personal Statement
I can pinpoint my decision to pursue a career in archeology to a single day. I was touring the old
city of Quebec in the summer of 2012 and happened upon an archeological dig site that was being
opened to the public. It contained the foundations of some of the first houses built by the French
when they settled in Quebec. Pieces of shattered pottery and rusted coins were on display. I
marveled at the thought of unearthing something previously lost to history. When I began my high
schoolcareer, I had the opportunity to be exposed to a range of social studies courses in and
outside of my high school, all of which have reinforced my interest in history, and have provided
me with a different perspective on history. For instance, during my junior... Show more content on

I originally became interested in Dutch history after studying tulip mania in an Advanced
Placement economics class. Tulip mania was a period in the Dutch Golden Age during which the
price of tulip bulbs reached an astonishing high and then plummeted, causing the Netherlands

time period fascinates me. The Rembrandt Tulip, famous for its mosaic virus that causes a
multicolor effect of lines, was made popular after being featured in many paintings of the Dutch
masters. It was this fame that in part led to the drastic increase in the price of tulips. After studying
tulip mania and visiting the Amsterdam/New Amsterdam exhibit at The Museum of the City of
New York, the Dutch Golden Age and how it impacted colonial America has fascinated me. I have
taken an online introduction to Dutch language course in order to pursue the study of Dutch
colonial history further. During my undergraduate career, I hope to gain valuable research

The Governmental Branches Of The United States Essay
Three governmental branches were created by the new constitution: an executive branch, a
judicial branch and a legislative branch. The constitution called for the election of a governor
and 24 senators and identified eligible voters as men who were possessed of freeholds of the
value of one hundred pounds, over and above all debts charged thereon. The constitution also
called for the election of 70 assemblymen for 14 declared counties who were to be elected by
male inhabitant of full age, who shall have personally resided within one of the counties of New
York State for six months immediately preceding the day of election. New York also guaranteed the
right to trial by jury, which had been eroded under British rule. The Constitution granted the
national government more power than under the Articles of Confederation. Many Americans were
concerned that the national government with its new powers, as well as the new division of power
between the central and state governments, would threaten liberty. Legislative Branch New York
State Legislature refers to the two houses that act as the state legislature of the U.S. state of New
York. The New York Constitution does not designate an official term for the two houses together. It
says only that legislative power is vested in the senate and assembly. The Legislature, through its
varied functions, serves as a check upon the executive authority of the Governor and helps ensure
that the best interests of the State s citizens are

Analysis of Alfred TennysonВґs Three Poems Essay
Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson of Aldworth and Freshwater is known as one of the
greatest poetic figure of the Victorian Age. Tennyson started writing poetry at an early age and
at the age of twelve he wrote a 6,000 line poem. His poems consisted of medieval legends, myths,
and everyday life and nature. When he was appointed laureate a position he held for 42 years, the
longest of any laureate, he wrote about historical events and one of his famous works was Ode on
the Death of Duke of Wellington. Three of his poems that I chose and stood out above all others
are Mariana, In Memoriam A.H.H., and Ulysses. Mariana was Tennyson s widely acclaimed in

work by his brothers. Insisted by his friends and father Tennyson entered one of his old works
entitled Timbuctoo for the Chancellor s Gold Medal which he won in 1829. When he entered his
poem for the Chancellor s prize he encountered Arthur Henry Hallam becoming Tennyson s closest
friend. In that same year they joined a secret society named the Apostles which after couples of

Hallam who was also fond of writing poetry published a volume with Tennyson named Poems,
Chiefly Lyrical which was criticized but later on started to receive favorable reviews and one of the
poems named Mariana was highly praised.
In Mariana, Tennyson used objects and the environment to show how the character Mariana is

  • 2. An Extension Of The Activities Essay Research is a systematic, precise and rigorous inquiry or investigation that allows people to understand the nature of a problem or idea (Grossoehme, 2014; Stringer, 2014). All research can be visualised as an extension of the activities we engage in day by day, which requires one to move past the day to day understandings and engage in a more precise and rigorous description, observation or explanation of the problem or idea (Stringer, 2014). The general distinction between qualitative and quantitative research is that quantitative research uses empirical data in the form of numbers, while qualitative research uses empirical data that is not in the form of numbers, usually words, but there is much more to the research designs than their use of numerical data or not (Stringer, 2014; Punch, 2009). Qualitative research is associated with research conducted in the social world, as opposed to quantitative research which focuses on predicting and controlling phenomena on the physical world, and both have their own way of thinking and approaches to research and collecting their data (Stringer, 2014, Punch, 2009). For the purpose of this assignment we will look into the ideas, thinking and approaches of two qualitative research designs; grounded theory and action research. Grounded theory Grounded theory is both a strategy of research and a style of analysis that uses the procedures to develop a theory grounded in the data, using an inductive, theory discovery method, whose ... Driven by his interest in Erin, he gives up his friends and his passion for motorbikes to look after her children. However when he does not receive due appreciation from Erin who at this point is completely involved in the Hinkley case, he decides to walk out on her. This shows that George was at Stage 2 of Kohlberg s moral development model. He was taking care of Erin s children in order to win s Erin s love and when he did not get due attention he decided to leave. Later in the story we see George coming back to Erin when he notices her efforts bringing in results. At this point his actions may put him at Stage 3 i.e. Interpersonal Concordance because he comes back to Erin and her children at their apparent time of need, to show that he is a good family member.

When you hear, or say that term, the visual that may come to mind may be: criminal, old western movie, or even a comparison to a relationship. But in relation to the movie Wanted it stands for nothing but a guy that wanted no more in life but to find his purpose. A lot of us in this world never actually find our purpose in life, we just kind of settle for what we are able to do. We go through trials and tribulations to find ourselves, and find anything that will make our lives more satisfying, including putting ourselves in harms way to do it. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first theme demonstrated in this movie is Perseverance, which was illustrated in the film by Wesley, and his determination to go through all the physical test to meet standards of the fraternity. His whole intention throughout the movie was to prove that he could become more than what he always has considered himself, which is below average. When Wesley was in training he got beat up by multiple people in the fraternity, in an attempt to make him physically strong to stand anything. He learned tasks including fighting, knife work, and also how to curve a bullet. When he was learning to curve the bullet Sloan, played by Morgan Freeman, states The first time in your life Wesley, you are in control (Bekmambetov, Wanted). As he shoots multiple bullets and still pierces the wrong target, Fox then stands in the middle of him and the target and says, shoot the target (Bekmambetov, Wanted ). As hesitant as he was he knew he had to have confidence in himself to complete the task. As he shoots around Fox, not knowing if the bullet would hit her, he takes his shot and hits the correct target. Sloan then says Welcome to the fraternity (Bekmambetov, Wanted ). He then knew all his hard work had paid off! That part of the movie showed strength and perseverance. Another way both themes, deceit and perseverance, were shown was at the end of the movie when ... • 9. Summary Of Monica Ferrell Monica Ferrell s, Of the Irresoubleness of Diamonds, Harmless, As Recalled by a Fairy Tale, Gerburt des Monicakinds, and Beautiful Funeral each employ four different grammatical issues such as attributive adjectives, finite verb strings, non finite verb strings, active voice and the known new contract throughout her poems. By incorporating these grammatical issues into her work, Ferrell intends to develop a clear and sharp image to ignite the imagination of her readers. The poems Of the Irresoubleness of Diamonds, Harmless, As Recalled by a Fairy Tale, Gerburt des Monicakinds and Beautiful Funeral were written by poet and novelist Monica Ferrell. Monica Ferrell was born in New Dehli. She earned her BA from Harvard University and MFA from Columbia University (Poetry Foundation). Ferrell discusses the role of uncertainty in her poems. She states, I m trying to let something that wants to come into being do so poetry as uncovering, rather than invention or rhetoric, and a form of devotion and service . (Poetry Foundation). By using several grammar techniques Ferrell paints a bright image for her readers to ponder upon. Ferrell is an atypical poet and uses a variety of forms to convey her simple and lyrical tone throughout them. One of the reasons that I chose her poems is because of the strong, lyrical language she uses to convey the imagery and earnest tone. Her attitude throughout these three poems remains quizzical. • 11. Short Story Of Short Stories One thing that s great about short stories is how quickly they can ruin your life. Maybe you start reading one over your lunch break and, if it s the right one, before that peanut butter cup you brought for dessert even has a chance to finish its melting shape shift into some kind of sugary cement, the whole world has been destroyed around you and then rebuilt, and nothing is quite the same again. This happens whether you like it or not. Great stories practice this violent beauty on you in a variety of ways: some by making an absurd world familiar (or vice versa), some with a slow burn, some with a voice that colonizes your thoughts. Some do it quietly, almost without you even noticing, and some do it with high wire acts of imagination or intellect that make you into a breathless witness. The trick, then, is finding the right story, one that is capable of such a thing. This is no easy task. Tastes differ, of course, and it can be confusing to spot the small boat of a great story on the wide sea of fiction. What any reader can offer you in terms of guidance is actually the same thing that any good writer can offer you with the story itself: a way of saying, This is what moved me and made me feel strange and alive in some way; here, why don t you give it a try? In that spirit and in no particular order, here are ten short stories you might ve missed that ambushed me with their odd wonder: 1.The Zero Meter Diving Team by Jim Shepard (BOMB Magazine) This curious, ... One of the major causes of mortality among infections acquired at the hospital is VAP. Once a patient develops VAP he/she will have to spend to longer amount of time in the ICU (Rello et al.,1996). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The various factors that increase a patient s susceptibility to VAP are discussed by Cook et al.(1998). Background of study It has been found that the chances of developing nosocomial pneumonia is reduced by situating seriously ill ventilated patients in a semi recumbent position. The goal of this experiment is to compare and contrast between the effects of the present standard degree of bed head elevation (i.e. 25 В°) and 45В° elevation on the occurrence of VAP. The incidence of VAP can be prevented/reduced in the hospitals by taking nursing measures. Elevation of head of bed is one among them. Nurses should maintain the angle of 45 degree of bed head elevation all times to reduce the risk of aspiration. The flat position increases the risk of aspiration. The main purpose of this study is to understand whether or not increasing the standard degree of bed head elevation will help minimize the occurrence of VAP. Methods of study The method adopted was quantitative in nature, using a randomized controlled trial. In order to achieve this, 71 adult patients were assessed for eligibility and among this 59 met the given criteria. They were randomly categorized into treatment groups consisting of 29 patients and a control group consisting of 27 patients. Of the G8 nations, a collective of the eight largest, civilized and most economically powerful countries in the world (Canada, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan and the US), the United States and Japan are the only countries that still practice the death penalty. And to their credit, Japan does not have a policy of executing children as we practice in the United States. How can anyone say that the lawful killing of a child is consistent with human dignity or justice? But van den Haag insists that the threat of execution is enough of a deterrent to warrant its use. But let us be honest. How plausible is it to execute children? Because crimes of passion are not capable of receiving the death penalty, we must assume that those who commit homicide have the ability to comprehend and take responsibility for their actions. We cannot vote in this country until we are 18; one can assume that this is a generally accepted age of responsibility. So how can we expect a child who commits a murder to have a full understanding of his actions? Some of our congressmen and senators have proposed lowering the age of execution to 13, despite the fact that basic human rights declarations consider the execution of anyone under the age of 18 to be a gross violation of natural and understood rights standards. Van den Haag also claims that the imposition of the death penalty maintains the dignity of a society because it creates security, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. Anti-Semitism In Religion I believe Christianity began as a religion of anti Semitism, however, I do not believe that tradition remained the same in modern day society. Anti Semitism refers to the practice of discrimination and hostility toward those who practice Judaism. Historically, anti Semitism was a long standing custom of whichever empire or ruling power was in charge of Jerusalem and that custom did not exclude Christians when they eventually rose to power during the time of the Roman Empire. In fact, several early Christian homilies and dialogues were spoken against the practice of Judaism, primarily because of their role in the death of Jesus. However, I believe that in modern times the practice of anti Semitism has moved away from a primary religious standpoint and become more focused on cultural practices. The first homily written against the Jewsthat blamed them for the death of Jesus was preached by Melito of Sardis. The Bishop claims that the death of Jesus is the Jews extraordinary crime, and condemns them for their role in it (143). Moreover, in this sermon, Melito outlines the reasons why the Church of Christianityhas displaced the Jewish people and made their religion irrelevant. • 36. Modern Drama And Modern Criticism Nothing is harder to bring to life for a modern reader than the theatre of the past, Michael Booth states in his book, English Melodrama, as an opening to his chapter the character of melodrama . Booth resumes by saying that to reconstruct extinct theaters, to inhabit them once again with noisy audiences, and to light them with flickering candles, harsh hissing gas, and soft multi colored pools of limelight picking out actors long forgotten, acting in old fashioned ways in front of creaking flats and jerking wings, is to make dead eyes see and dead ears hear. After research on this topic, I realized that the task is even more difficult when the kind of theatre under discussion is now extinct, and toward which modern dramaand modern criticism is unsympathetic. This is the case with the melodramaof the nineteenth century, the most popular dramatic form of its age, a form that depended more on graphic exhilaration and the thrill of the moment qualities almost beyond critical recall than anything ever written for the stage. Now it is all gone, and I will hopefully through this essay bring some of this back to life. Yet because of its energy and vividness, something of its nature can be imparted. Green River Killer By Gary Leon Ridgway Green River Killer Gary Leon Ridgway Elizabeth Sabie Florida International University Green River Killer Gary Leon Ridgway In the summer of 1982, while playing in the woods, children found the body of a young teen was floating in the Green River in King County, Washington. Sixteen year old Wendy Lee Coffield was found strangled with her own panties and tossed into the river like a piece of refuse. Her murder sparked an investigation that spanned three decades. Coffield s body was the first of many found in or near the Green River in a murder spree that remained unsolved for twenty years. The victims were young women, often prostitutes or runaways, who hitchhiked along Highway 99, a dilapidated stretch of the Sea Tac Highway known for its strip clubs, drugs, and seedy motels (Montaldo). While the majority of the murders occurred between 1982 1984, police had little success in tracking what they soon realized was a serial killer. Within a year the police had found four more bodies of young women, and they formed a task force to apprehend the Green River Killer. It became apparent that the killer had chosen this stretch of highway to hunt for his victims. The women found here lived in such ways that no one really noticed if they went missing. This proved even more problematic for the task force, because they were searching for a killer who had committed the murders months prior. The bodies had decomposed and it was extremely difficult ... • 41. Rhetorical Analysis On Civil Disobedience Civil Disobedience Similar to Douglas, Thoreau writes against the injustice of slavery and the despotism of government. Thoreau starts his essay by stating that Government is best which governs least since government becomes despotic with corruption. He further adds in his essay Government is best which governs not at all with the same sentiment of civil disobedienceagainst the injustices of government. For that reason Thoreau makes the argument that Government not practical because it does not pass the test of morality. Moreover, Thoreau s repudiation of the government s standing army is why the government fails this test of morality. For Thoreau, government is the mode by which people execute their will. Therefore, it is the people who have the right to disobey civil government because it draws its strength from the will of the majority. His criticism extends to the power of the strong, since the power of the strong does not translate to the justice and question the people s resignation of their rights to the legislator. Lastly, Thoreau argues that government lost some of its integrity. For Thoreau, when the tyranny becomes great and unendurable, men have the right to revolution and the right to refuse their allegiance and resist government. Even voting for the right is doing nothing for it according to Thoreau. Even in his criticism of voting, Thoreau expresses that people would vote to abolish slavery once they feel indifferent about it. Furthermore, Thoreau considered the Constitution a form of human law based on moral principle. Therefore, the Constitution should not subject people to relinquish their natural rights, and men should resist civil government in return. Bartelby In agreement with Thoreau s philosophy of civil disobedience, Melville argues about the political consequences for resisting government through his story of Bartelby. This character illustrates the connection between Fredrick Douglas life as a slave to the system that turned him into a machine. Edward Snowden was the source of the report. He is a computer expert, who used to work for the CIA of the United States, but was turned into a whistleblower and exposed the U.S. government s secret surveillance programs. The leaks by him show that the NSA and British intelligence agencies have had a consistently evolving set of tools and methods for gleaning information from hard to reach systems. Prior to this event, most U.S. citizens had not known that their government agencies had been surveilling their private data. Law enforcement and intelligence agencies have used surveillance so that they can glean information, detect or prevent crime and terrorism, and investigate them after they took place. The stories can be exciting and dramatic to all ages. A director named Baz Luhrmann made a film that was a modern day version of Romeo and Juliet. In Baz Luhrmann s film of Romeo and Juliet, he made decisions regarding actors, setting and costumes because he wanted to attract a younger crowd since Romeo and Juliet is a story about two young lovers. One way Luhrmann attracted a young crowd was by making the time and place of the film more modernized. Luhrmann s film was located in Verona beach, NY, instead of filming in Verona, Italy. Filming in Verona beach gives the film more of a interesting feel for young adults to watch, because some of the play is in the city area and some is on the beach. In contrast to, Verona, Italy, where it was filmed in a boring and old town. In addition, the film is set in the 1900 s instead of the 1500 s which makes the film feel more modernized. Homeostasis is maintaining a physiological system in a higher animal to maintain co ordinated responses. It tries to maintain the environmental changes, and a condition of balance or equilibrium within its internal environment. Homeostasis is the process of keeping everything constant. The higher animal I have chosen is Humans. The reason why I have chosen Humans is because there are so many homeostatic mechanisms available for this higher animal. Homeostatic mechanisms are important because it maintains your core body temperature so the enzymes within the body are able to run at an optimum level. (pers comm [Nicole Mitchell], 2016) If an enzyme get too cold the process of bonding with proteins will slow until they are unable to bond, if an enzyme is too hot it will de nature meaning its shape will change and be unable to bond with proteins, both being too cold and too hot will kill the host as organs are unable to function without proteins . It regulates the body temperature so you don t heat up too much. A negative feedback loop is important because it allows the mechanism to stop, so you don t die. Jennifer Hirsch s ethnographic research, The Secret (2014), reveals how marriage and extra marital sex intersect with modes of power and structural violence in turn putting couples (mostly women) at risk for HIV infection. This phenomenon is linked to historical, economic, social and cultural variants of inequality that suppress women to a certain set of practices that makes them reside outside the peripheries of society, on the basis of their gender. In turn, women become token bodies who carry agency but simultaneously not exercisers of their own agency. Thus, this paper will be an analysis of how power dictates and enforces certain... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As women are confronted by structural violence, social practices and cultural contexts in which their ability to mitigate the risk of HIV/AIDS or to harness protection is reduced on the basis of their gender, this in turn plays into underlying socially imbedded power structures. As women experience a lowered sense of agency, they virtually have no ability to mitigate their risks of HIV. This denial of agency prevents women from negotiating sex in general, let alone protected or safe sex, including condom use. Structural violence is defined as violence that is structured by historically given processes and forces that conspire to constrain agency . Therefore, we can asses that a byproduct of colonial rule was the naturalization of gender distinctions that are rooted in forms of structurally imbedded violence. This is apparent in how colonial/Eurocentric categorizations of man and women have become a defining feature of gender categorizations. An example of this is the colonial domestic ideology, a categorization of gender that was rooted in scientific rigor . According to this theory, innate and demonstrable biological differences defined fundamental differences between males and females . These differences thus structured and dictated differing patterns of behavior for men and women . Men were to be active in the public world, competing for power and wealth; while women were to be the sanctuary of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 52. Archeology Personal Statement I can pinpoint my decision to pursue a career in archeology to a single day. I was touring the old city of Quebec in the summer of 2012 and happened upon an archeological dig site that was being opened to the public. It contained the foundations of some of the first houses built by the French when they settled in Quebec. Pieces of shattered pottery and rusted coins were on display. I marveled at the thought of unearthing something previously lost to history. When I began my high schoolcareer, I had the opportunity to be exposed to a range of social studies courses in and outside of my high school, all of which have reinforced my interest in history, and have provided me with a different perspective on history. For instance, during my junior... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I originally became interested in Dutch history after studying tulip mania in an Advanced Placement economics class. Tulip mania was a period in the Dutch Golden Age during which the price of tulip bulbs reached an astonishing high and then plummeted, causing the Netherlands market to crash. The connection between the economic crash in the Netherlands and art during the time period fascinates me. The Rembrandt Tulip, famous for its mosaic virus that causes a multicolor effect of lines, was made popular after being featured in many paintings of the Dutch masters. It was this fame that in part led to the drastic increase in the price of tulips. After studying tulip mania and visiting the Amsterdam/New Amsterdam exhibit at The Museum of the City of New York, the Dutch Golden Age and how it impacted colonial America has fascinated me. I have taken an online introduction to Dutch language course in order to pursue the study of Dutch colonial history further. During my undergraduate career, I hope to gain valuable research experience by studying abroad in the Netherlands and publish a paper on the subject of Dutch colonialism in ... • 53. The Governmental Branches Of The United States Essay Three governmental branches were created by the new constitution: an executive branch, a judicial branch and a legislative branch. The constitution called for the election of a governor and 24 senators and identified eligible voters as men who were possessed of freeholds of the value of one hundred pounds, over and above all debts charged thereon. The constitution also called for the election of 70 assemblymen for 14 declared counties who were to be elected by male inhabitant of full age, who shall have personally resided within one of the counties of New York State for six months immediately preceding the day of election. New York also guaranteed the right to trial by jury, which had been eroded under British rule. The Constitution granted the national government more power than under the Articles of Confederation. Many Americans were concerned that the national government with its new powers, as well as the new division of power between the central and state governments, would threaten liberty. Legislative Branch New York State Legislature refers to the two houses that act as the state legislature of the U.S. state of New York. The New York Constitution does not designate an official term for the two houses together. It says only that legislative power is vested in the senate and assembly. The Legislature, through its varied functions, serves as a check upon the executive authority of the Governor and helps ensure that the best interests of the State s citizens are ... When he was appointed laureate a position he held for 42 years, the longest of any laureate, he wrote about historical events and one of his famous works was Ode on the Death of Duke of Wellington. Three of his poems that I chose and stood out above all others are Mariana, In Memoriam A.H.H., and Ulysses. Mariana was Tennyson s widely acclaimed in which he creates imagery from the environment to express a woman s emotional state. In... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1827 he enrolled in Trinity College to join his brothers Fredrick and Charles. Insisted by his friends and father Tennyson entered one of his old works entitled Timbuctoo for the Chancellor s Gold Medal which he won in 1829. When he entered his poem for the Chancellor s prize he encountered Arthur Henry Hallam becoming Tennyson s closest friend. In that same year they joined a secret society named the Apostles which after couples of meetings later Tennyson abandoned. Tennyson started to focus on poetryrather then his studies and Hallam who was also fond of writing poetry published a volume with Tennyson named Poems, Chiefly Lyrical which was criticized but later on started to receive favorable reviews and one of the poems named Mariana was highly praised. In Mariana, Tennyson used objects and the environment to show how the character Mariana is feeling. Mariana is living in a Moated Grange however her depression affects her views of her surroundings. Throughout the entire poem all she thinks about is that her life is dreary, He cometh not, she said; She said, I am aweary, aweary, I would that I were dead! ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
