The s Defense Of Icons
In Defense of Icons
Throughout history The Church and a number of Christians including myself have found
themselves defending their use of icons against the views of individuals who felt that the icons
were a form of idolatry. These individuals also know as Iconoclasts have a staunch position against
the use of icons. Their position is based on interpretation of the Old Testamentlaw stated in Exodus
20:4 You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens
or on the earth or in the sea . Is this truly contrary to the Old Testament law or is it simply
preserving through time the incarnation of Christ, the Gospels and the history of the Christian
church? I will give you a brief history, and then offer my personal opinion to the subject. Let s
define what is an icon and give a brief history of icons. An icon is sacred art, usually a fresco or
mosaic of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, martyred Saints or scenes from the bible that are given
special veneration. This type of sacred art first appeared in the catacombs were the first Christians
would gather to worship during periods of persecution. The scenes depicted were of Christ s
family, gospel stories or stories from the Hebrew scriptures. As Christianitybegan to grow, and
after the Edict of Milan the Emperor Constantine decreed that Christians were no longer to be
persecuted. In response to this new decree, by the fourth century icons became a way of teaching
the Gospel and a way to

The Comparison of Themes between Lord of the Flies and Animal Farm
The author of Animal Farm, Orwell, tells a story of a farmyard tragedy and the deadly lives of a
group of animals. Due to the disappearance of humans, Napoleon abuses his power and gradually
transforms into a human. Orwell also used animals to clarify that humans are corrupted due to
power. The author of Lord of the Flies, Golding, shows a similar story where it is about life and
death situation for a group of lost boys on a island that is trying to establish a democracy while on
the island. Both authors of novels, Lord of the Flies and Animal Farm demonstrate the comparison
between the theme of human and animal nature in settings where traditional authority absent. ...

The characters of the novel are fit to the theme of man s intuitive evilness, as the boys are under
the age of 14. When they continue to enjoy torturing others, they reveal their enjoyment of being
savages. They do not desire any order or law of directing force in their state of savagery.
In Animal Farm, George Orwell uses satirical allegory throughout his novel to present the
pessimistic view of human nature. The animal fable is used to demonstrate the issues of unfair
treatment, exploitation and inequality in society. It is evident that this irony is particularly evident
in the ending of both novels (Gulbin 88). The satirist irony is directed on the events of the Russian
Revolution and on the totalitarian regime. Orwell uses political reason with creative reason to
show his negative belief that people only change the dictators though revolutions but the systems
stay the same. It is only a dream that people can gain a classless society through revolutions.
Orwell believes that everyone wants equality, yet it is in one s nature as human beings to obtain
power.
Napoleon, who is represented as an evil power hungry pig, becomes the villain that destroys the
farm through his manipulative acts such as abusing the animals, cutting rations, increasing labor,
and in the end making an imbalance of equality. The revolution that promised freedom delivered
for some the strong, the well armed, and slavery for all the others (Donald E. Morse 89). Instead of

The Parent Trap Essay
The Parent Trap is a film from 1998 that takes place in London, Napa (California) and Maine.
First it begins in the Summer Camp in Maine, where two redheads Annie and Hallie
coincidentally meet. In there they found out that they were twins and that the last 12 years they
have lived apart, but not only from each other also from their parents. As well they decided to
change places, so Hallie instead of going to Napa with his father, goes with her mom to London
and Annie with his dad to Napa. After the unconventional plan of reunited their parents, they
decided that they needed to know more about each other, so the plan could work. Eventually it
was the end of the summer camp, so each sister went to their new home, but in the end their
parents figure it out. The kids try to be subtle because only her mom knew about the switch.
Finally, when they get reunited in a Hotel his dad knew about it in a very impressive moment
because he was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the other part it also has plenty of fun moments. Hallie and Annie made an impressive role
especially because it was the same person Lindsay Lohan acting for the two sisters. Because of
this I think that this movie was a well received film because it doesn t matter that now days is
old the kids still enjoyed watching it. In 1961 and 1986 was the first movie The Parent Trap, but
in this movie the actress was Hayley Mills. This film has the same story of the one of Lindsay
Lohan, but in this one the events change, it tells you about that two sisters were separated since
birth, and one lived in Boston and the other one in California. In my opinion I think that both
movies are good, but honestly, IВґd rather watch the one of Lindsay Lohan. Supposing you never
had watch neither of them the most probably is that you would watch the one that is more

Children and Teens Know Right from Wrong
Do you believe that children know right from wrong the moment they start to lie? I do, because
the moment they don t listen to you or do something wrong knowing it is wrong but they do it
anyway, that s when they know right from wrong. Two to thirteen year olds are a prime example.
But the biggest example is teenagers. Teenagers do crazy stuff that can get them in trouble just to
be cool. That s mostly why we have so many teens going to jail. Many teens shoplift in the
presence of friends out of a desire to impress others, as oftentimes the teens that engage in the
riskiest behaviors are the most popular with peers. (Lisa Medoff; When Teenagers Steal). Teens
misbehave just to get attention. I don t think teens should have to... Show more content on

The desire to fit in with peers can be a very strong influence on teens. There are two different
types of peer pressure. Negative peer pressure is when teens feel pressured to do something they
know is wrong. Positive peer pressure is when your friends push you to do something that is
good and helpful to others. Negative peer pressure can lead to, smoking, drinking, doing drugs,
or stealing, or doing something you don t want to do such as cutting class or having sex.
(Unknown; Positive and Negative Peer Pressure). Teens may be tempted to give in to negative
peer pressure because they want to be liked or fit in. They may also do it because they are afraid
of being made fun of, or they want to try something other teens are doing. Positive peer pressure
is everybody s favorite. It shows how friends can help each other do great things. Good friends
are a great example. They can encourage teens to do well in school, get involved in positive
activities, volunteer, eat healthy foods, and avoid drugs, alcohol, and other risky activities.
(Unknown; Peer Pressure). Good Friends or best friends can also help teens learn good social
skills and better ways to communicate and work out problems, and give teens good advice. I
think peer pressure plays an important role in a young teen s life. Sometimes it basically controls
their life. It can also help with lying or doing

The Interesting Industry of Japanese Whaling Essay
If I had one year to learn more about a topic of my choice, I would study about the Japanese whaling
industry. Although whale hunting in Japan began in the 12th century, Japan s involvement in the
whaling industry began in the 1890s. The international whaling industry functioned normally until
1925 when the League of Nations called for conservation measures in 1925. This eventually led to
the Geneva Convention for the Regulation of Whalingin 1931, which was ignored by Japan and
Germany. Instead, as whale catches diminished in coastal waters, Japanese whale hunters looked to
Antarctica. This started with the Japanese company Toyo Hogei K.K. purchasing the Norwegian
ship Antarctic, renaming it the Tonan Maru.
However, World War II soon... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Japan joined the International Whaling Commission in 1951; however, Japan would later be
criticized by environmental organizations and anti whaling nations for making heavy use of Article
VIII of the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling which states that
Notwithstanding anything contained in this Convention any Contracting Government may grant to
any of its nationals a special permit authorizing that national to kill, take and treat whales for
purposes of scientific research subject to such restrictions as to number and subject to such other
conditions as the Contracting Government thinks fit, and the killing, taking, and treating of whales
in accordance with the provisions of this Article shall be exempt from the operation of this
Convention.
As the commercial viability of large competing whaling fleets was diminished due to restrictions,
six Japanese whaling companies agreed to merge into one in July 1975. The government declared
support for the new company, with Prime Minister Shintaro Abe saying, We ask that the flame of
the whaling industry will not be put out and that you do your best to secure Japan s food supplies.
The government will be doing all it can to actively support your efforts. Eventually, the company
merged with the Japan Whaling Association and Institute of Cetacean Researchto create the
Institute of Cetacean Research in 1987.

The Case Of Johnson Johnson
Although emergencies are unexpected by nature, the true character of a company is revealed by
how they react and handle a crisis. In 1982, seven individuals died in Chicago from taking Extra
Strength Tylenol capsules, which were laced with cyanide. Tylenol became one of Johnson Johnson
s most successful products, accounting for 17 percent of the company s profits. Extra Strength
Tylenol constituted 70 percent of all Tylenol sales (Lazare). Johnson Johnsonalso enjoyed an
incredible amount of trust and goodwill from the public, nurtured in part by its allegiance to the
company credo of responsibility to employees, consumers, stockholders, and the community.

Instead, the company advertised in the national media for individuals not to consume any products
that contained acetaminophen. When it was determined that only capsules were tampered with,
they offered to exchange all Tylenol capsules already purchased by the public with solid tablets
(Lazare). Johnson Johnson offered a $100,000 reward for the capture and conviction of the Tylenol
Killer whom was never found (Yang). The media commended Johnson Johnson for it s handling of
the crisis; for example, an article in The Washington Post said, Johnson Johnson has effectively
demonstrated how a major business ought to handle a disaster. The article further stated that this is
no Three Mile Island accident in which the company s response did more damage than the original
incident, and praised the company for being honest with the public (Kaplan). Johnson Johnson
could have easily blamed the stores for not protecting their product and for allowing someone to
tamper with the capsules. This could possibly have led to a lawsuit because the Johnson Johnson
brand was briefly tarnished from public outcry and scrutiny, which ultimately hurt their business
and reputation; something that money cannot restore. Like most large companies, Johnson Johnson
could have dismissed the situation by preparing a simple written statement or apology in response
to the seven deaths, which would deflect their liability in the situation. In my

Greed In Macbeth
Shakespeare was, and still is, the most celebrated playwright, poet, and actor both during his life
and current day. He published many great works with amazing themes. However there is none
greater than theme of greed portrayed in The Tragedy of Macbeth. Greed is played predominantly
throughout this entire play in several characters, but most by none other than MacBethand his
lovely wife, Lady MacBeth. Not only is theme of greed shown throughout this play, Shakespeare
goes as to far as to show how greed can change a person s outlook, persona, and life.
Lady MacBeth was one of the biggest antagonist through the first half of MacBeth. She was greedy
and wanted power more than anything, including her husband s reservations about murder and

At the very beginning, you see MacBeth as pretty nice, sincere character. He hasn t tasted
power, and doesn t necessarily have thirst for it, but his wife obviously does. Shmoop.com
writers even accurately state, MacBeth treats Lady MacBeth as an equal, if not more dominant
partner , and that is where issues begin. MacBeth was actually happy being named thane of
Cawdor, but didn t last too long due to his wife. His wife shares a plan to invite Duncan, the
King at the time, over, get him and the guards drunk, kill Duncan, and plant the evidence on the
now dead gaurds. At first, MacBeth was really hesitant towards, and thought he was time will
simply come. He does, however, go through with the act of killing Duncan. After the death of the
king, MacBeth really starts to lose it. He becomes just like his wife, and wants nothing more
than power. It s ironic as MacBeth becomes more and more greedy, his wife starts see how greed
is an awful thing, MacBeth, who was once happy just being thane of Cawdor, is now so greedy
as king that he tries to kill his best friend and his offspring just to simply make sure he stays in
power all with no help from his wife. He slowly buys into what Lady MacBeth preached, even
though she digressed from conversations of greed, and became a

The Picture Of Dorian Gray And A Nymph s Reply To The...
Sydney Pefferman Cavolt LA III Honors/Period 2 28 May 2017 The temptation to feel worth
through external beauty, drives each and every person to go to extreme lengths to make
themselves seem as presentable as possible. Because of society s high prioritization of external
appearance, I always personally feel pressured to look and act a certain way. However, many new
perspectives on beauty were revealed to me through novels I read throughout this year. Both The
Picture of Dorian Gray and A Nymph s Reply to the Shepherd work to develop an overarching
theme that possessing a superficial faith in youth and beauty, will ultimately lead to one s
damnation. The Nymph s Reply to the Shepherd is a response written by Walter Raleighwith the
intention of mocking the ideas in Christopher Marlowes poem The Passionate Shepherd to His Love
. Marlowe s poem depicts a young shepherd attempting to seduce his love by enticing her with an
impractical version of the life they could live together. From this poem Raleigh composed The
Nymph s Reply to the Shepherd which was used to scorn Marlowe s unrealistic and fantastical
views. Throughout his poem Raleigh utilizes natural imagery to convey his central idea that all
things will eventually be forced to relinquish their beauty. While the passionate shepherd
promises nature s beauty and an abundance of gifts, the nymph in Raleigh s poem reveals that
such promises could only be valid if all the world and love were young. In reality, the change in
seasons would cause the shepherd s shallow rivers to rage, rocks to grow cold and roses to fade.
While the shepherd s gifts may be persuading, Raleigh reveals that their effect is too fleeting;
they would soon break, soon wither and be soon forgotten. In the end, the nymph acknowledges
that as time pases all of these trivial things she was once offered will all be subject to change and
decay, leaving nothing in their worth. Raleigh s portrayal of the fleeting state of beauty helped
encourage me to stop judging myself and others based on external appearance, and focus more on
positive internal qualities that I know will not fade with age.
My journey throughout this year was also heavily affected by

Women in Singapore should be allowed to fight in the front line Being part of the front line combat
refers to being part of the most advanced tactical combat units forming a military line. Women in
Singapore should be allowed to fight in the front line. It is undeniable that it would require high
physical strength that most women lack, but women can be trained to be just as capable as men, if
not better, or assume front line positions requiring less physical strength. The generalised statement
of women being weaker should not restrict them from taking up front line combat positions. Women

It would only be fair to give equal opportunities to women who are able to meet the same
requirements as men and it would also promote equality with them being as capable as the men.
Restricting women because they are weaker is a generalised statement and not a fact that
associates with specific women. Major Gregory Trahan was witness to a female supply sergeant
replacing a trained infantryman after running through a gauntlet of seven mortar rounds that
exploded continuously as the three vehicle convoy he was commanding came under fire during
his 2003 2004 tour in and around Ramadi, Iraq. When the squad automatic weapon (SAW)
gunner in her truck was shot, but not severely injured and was too terrified to get back on the
gun, she radioed back to Major Gregory Trahan and received instructions to get someone back up
there, so she put the gunner in her seat, got up, and started pulling security with the vehicle. The
irony was, the gunner who had been pulling security on that truck was the armorer, who was an
infantryman and the backbone of the army, while she was just a supply sergeant, and women
were barred from the job of that armorer. Army Major Christopher L Heureux was witness to a
female lab technician, Van Wirt, just about five foot one, rescuing a male counterpart and getting

The European Union s Economic And Monetary Union
Abe Hannigan
Professor Wickham
POLS 120 The European Union launched the economic and monetary union (EMU) of Europe on
January 1st, 1999. January 1st of 2002 marked the establishment of a single currency through the
introduction of euro bills and coins to 12 EU states. Formally called the eurozone , the movement to
a single currency has developed as 18 EU member states currently use the euro. Desiring further
political integration, the EMU was designed to maintain price stability through a central bank
known as the European Central Bank (ECB). Although economic certainty was the goal, a financial
crisis that erupted within the eurozone lead to questions about the credibility of the EMU. The
debate over political integration was furthered by the introduction of ideas for increased fiscal
federalism, similar to the current policies within the United States currency union. For a monetary
union to succeed, a fiscal union is necessary to solve the vulnerabilities of the EMU and supervise
national policy to prevent macroeconomic imbalances throughout Europe. However, the dispute
over political centralization impedes the establishment of such a fiscal system within the upcoming
decade. As it remains a proposal rather than a policy, interpretations of fiscal union differ;
however, as defined, its purpose would create a set of rules for national governments concerning
tax and budget policies essentially leading to policy coordination among EU member states.

Wilhelm Reich Essay
Wilhelm Reich was born in the Austro Hungarian Empire on March 24th, 1897. His parents were
farmers, and at a young age Reich developed a fascination with the life processes of plants and
animals. His formal education at this time was provided by a private tutor.
When Reich was 14, he discovered his mother was having an affair with his tutor. After Reich
reported this to his father, his mother committed suicide. Atwood and Stolorow (1977) have
speculated that this tragedy may have contributed to Reich s most significant theories.
After the death of his father three years later, Reich took over the family farm until it was destroyed
by the Russians in 1915. At that time he joined the Austrian Army. Upon returning from the war,

Because sexuality is often shrouded in ignorance and shame, many people are not able to attain this
release and, according to Reich, are thereby doomed to ill health and neurotic disturbances.
In order to combat societal pressure and educate the youth, Reich began organizing mental hygiene
clinics and sex counseling. He also began joining liberal and socialistic groups at this time,
convinced that only an overthrow of authoritarian society could ultimately alleviate the neurotic
suffering of its constituents. To this end, in 1930 he left his wife and daughters and traveled to
Berlin to join the Communist Party. Three years later, Reich would be expelled from the Party
because of his views regarding sexuality.
With the rise of Hitler, Reich left Germany and traveled to Denmark, and then fled to Sweden to
escape the Nazis. Sweden expelled him, and Reich moved on to Norway, where he began his bion
experiments. It was during these experiments that he discovered what he would term orgone energy,
a form of life energy which the bions emitted. He built and began experimenting with a device
intended to attract and concentrate orgone energy, the orgone accumulator, or ORAC.
In 1939, Reich accepted an invitation to lecture at the New School for Social Research in New
York City, and he moved to the United States. He married again, and in 1944 his son Peter was
born. He continued to experiment with the ORAC, and in 1948 he is said to

Urinary Incontinence And Its Effects On Women
Approximately seventy percent of people experience urinary incontinence (UI) as a result of being
admitted into the hospital. Urinary incontinence is more prevalent in elderly people, and
predominantly affects women more often than men. Urinary incontinence can be is described as the
uncontrolled loss of urine, and can be broken down into five different types. The first type of urinary
incontinenceis stress incontinence, which occurs when there is involuntary emission of urine due
to coughing, sneezing, or applying any increased pressure to the abdominal region. The second
type is urge incontinence, which is when a person has a strong need to void, the bladder then
spasms, and the person experiences a spontaneous loss of urine. The third type of incontinence
that a person may experience is referred to as mixed incontinence. A person may experience a
combination of symptoms from any of the five types of incontinence. The fourth type of
incontinence is overflow incontinence. Typically a person s bladder fills completely, often without
the urge to void, resulting in urinary dribbling. Lastly, there is functional incontinence. During this
type of incontinence a person is generally aware of the urge to void, but due to some physical or
mental deficit, a person has the inability to make it to the restroom. This poses many problems for
both the patient and for the hospitals. As the numbers for UI continue to rise, the risk for falls will
increase, as well as increasing the amount

Ninety Five Theses
In this essay i m going to be writing about the ninety five theses. The Ninety Five Theses question
the Catholic Church s practice of selling indulgences and view skeptically the notion that a papal
pardon rather than penance or genuine contrition can achieve forgiveness of sins. Luther argued
that Christians were being falsely told that they could obtain absolution for souls in purgatory by
buying indulgences.
All Saints Church in Wittenberg, Saxony in the Holy Roman Empire, locally known as the Castle
Church Schlosskirche, where the Ninety Five Theses famously appeared, held one of Europe s

Albert of Mainz, the Archbishop of Mainz in Germany, had borrowed heavily to pay for his
high church rank and was deeply in debt. He agreed to allow the sale of the indulgences in his
territory in exchange for a cut of the proceeds. Luther was apparently not aware of this. Even
though Luther s prince, Frederick III, and the prince of the neighboring territory, George, Duke
of Saxony, forbade the sale thereof in their respective lands, people in Wittenberg traveled to
purchase them. When these people came to confession, they presented their plenary indulgences
for which they paid, claiming they no longer had to repent of their sins, since the document
promised to forgive all their sins. Luther was outraged that they had paid money for what was
theirs by right as a free gift from God. He felt compelled to expose the fraud that was being sold
to the people. This exposure was to take place in the form of a public scholarly debate at the
University of Wittenberg. The Ninety Five Theses outlined the items to be discussed and issued the
challenge to any and all

The Importance Of Electronic Media And Communication
We are to meet the people where they are at. With whatever means are available.
What about our youth. If we aren t able to understands our youths way of communication and not
only get involved with their language we have to educate them of the pitfalls of electronic media
and communications. If the church doesn t find a way to stay in step with our youth we are going
to lose them.
What I propose is to teach them proper ethical and spiruitual principles as it realates to electronic
communication (i.e. texting, email, video conferencing, facebook). We would not be able to
participate in on line educational discussions if we didn t have the electronic means to do so.
This vision demands that leaders in the church wrestle with the complexity of embodying the
Gospel in culture. As the church rediscovers its unique role in culture, and supports the calling of
their cultural influencers, it will be a force for good in our communities, cities and the country.
The call to the church to all Christians is to rediscover the cultural mandate, embracing the
opportunity to influence culture. In the church, we must teach about calling and cultural influence
and provide vital support to cultural leaders. We must become an integral piece of the local culture,
convening and encouraging creation of future culture that serves the common good. We must
become connoisseurs of good culture, recognizing and celebrating the good, the true, and the
beautiful to the glory of God, and begin to

A Summary of William Shakespeare s Henry IV Part 1
Henry IV, Part 1 William Shakespeare is considered the most important playwright of the
European Renaissance, if not the most important of all time. Each character in his collected
works is uniquely defined and highly memorable. In Henry IV, Part I, Shakespeare writes about
the struggle for the control of England during the time of the title king. Everything is in turmoil
following his ascension to the throne and his legacy is in question because of the perceived
personality of his successor to the crown. Not only does he endeavor to maintain his control of
the throne, but also vying are his son Hal who wants to takeover after his father and the rival
Hotspur who wants it for himself but also is representative of an entire faction of people who
want to rebel against Henry IV and do not feel loyal to him. Each of these men believes himself
to be rightfully entitled to become the king and this is a major theme that play out throughout
the play, namely what it means to be worthy of the title King of England; being king is far more
than a matter of luxury and power, it is a burden that only worthy men should be allowed to
undertake. For the current ruler of England, King Henry IV, he believes himself entitled because
of what he was willing to do in order to obtain the throne. The former king, Richard II, was
murdered and his chosen heir passed over by the zealous Henry. This perception of him as a
usurper of the throne spreads out to those who had once supported him. Hotspur

Connecticut Compromise
Equality in the Senate sparked a lot of debates during the Connecticut compromise. Some argued
that equality in the Senate would lead to state corporate capacity, while others argued this will help
balance the national government. To an extent the reason why a good chunk of the debates focused
on the idea of a balanced Senate, in my opinion, was because this topic the more complicated part of
the Connecticut Compromise. The founders were fairly certain that one of the branches of the

Technology And Technology
Over the past few years technology has advanced in many ways. There are many experts who
believe new technology is a threat to our brains. While others argue that new technology offers
many benefits to our brains like, enhancing our intellect, creativity, and mental capacity. In my
opinion, I think new technologyis and can be a threat to our brains because I believe technology is
replacing our ability to write, and read books. Also, while others might disagree with my
thoughts on new technology, I believe technology has become a threat to our brains because it
has consumed and become a bigger part of our lives today. An example of this scenario, is the essay

Further on, new technology has become a threat to our brains because it causes distractions. I
personally have suffered from distractions on the Net while doing school work on it, and also
while I use the Net to read. Some examples of distractions on the Net are advertisements, and
getting carried away browsing other websites. Another reason why new technology has become
a threat to our brains, is because we value efficiency over quality, which is detrimental both to
our brains and quality of our work. For example, I have found out that while it is easier and
quicker to acquire information on the Net, it is harder for our minds to process the information
and our quality of work is sometimes poor. Another reason why the Net is a threat to our brains
and detrimental to our mind is the essay Does Texting Affect Writing? by Michaela Cullington. In
the essay, the author Michaela Cullington talks about and asks the question if texting is affecting
our ability to write. One example of how texting can affect our writing is according to Cullington,
In order to more quickly type what they are trying to say, many people use abbreviations instead
of words. Michaela Cullington explains in this quote how texting can affect writing by talking
about how people use abbreviations instead of words in order to text quicker. According to
Michaela Cullington, The language created by these abbreviations is called textspeak . Also,

The Mystery Behind King Tut Essay
The Mystery Behind King Tut; Life and Death of the Boy King.
By all accounts, King Tutankhamun ascended to the throne at the tender young age of 9 years,
inheriting a tumultuous populace after the reign of the radical Pharaoh, Akhenaten. The young
king s reign was cut short when he died prematurely, when he was around 19 years of age, leaving
no surviving son to follow as his successor.
For 3 000 or so years following his death, Tutankhamun remained an elusive figure, with little
detail about his life. With the discovery of his tomb in 1922 by Archaeologist Howard Carter, the
mystery only deepened.
The most burning question; how did he die?
British Egyptologist and Archaeologist, Carter found Tutankhamun buried in a lavish tomb crammed

Tut, who had dies over 3, 000 years ago, is not about to give up his secrets easily, and we are left
to resort to science and technology to solve the mystery. There are three recurring theories that try
to explain his death; chariot accident, illness, or, more sinisterly, murder.
The murder theory inflamed when the first x ray test of the mummy in 1968 indicated an inter
cranial bone fragment lodged within the skull suggesting a blow to the death. Pharaohs were
regarded as living Gods, even more than the political and religious leader, and to kill the Pharaoh
was inconceivable. Throughout history, there are very few instances that record a Pharaoh being
assassinated, and in Tut s case too the murder theory was discarded when conclusive evidence
emerged that showed that the damage had been done after the mummification.
Unfortunately, Tut s mummy sustained heavy damage when Carter attempted to remove the body
from the confining space which housed it. Further damage occurred when the death mask, which
had stuck to the face and torso was removed. Therefore it is difficult to say that the extensive bone
damage had occurred when Tut was alive, the result of a devastating

2.INTRODUCTION2.1 Meaning of Databases and compilations
Databases in copyright are principally kinds of compilation, and compilations are seen as things
that are being protected . So in defining compilation, we can say that A compilation is defined in
the В§ 101 definitions section as: A work formed by the collection and assembling of pre existing
materials or of data that are selected, coordinated, or arranged in such a way that the resulting work
as a whole constitutes an original work of authorship.
This evidences that the protection of copyright in a compilation emphasizes and concentrates on
the original ways that the data or materials that pre existed are arranged, organized, coordinated
and selected, not the data. In s. 102 the subject clearly shows and comprises of compilations and

Essay On English Ambiguity
On Different Types of English Ambiguity
гЂђAbstractгЂ‘ Ambiguity is a wide phenomenon in all languages, including in English.
Sometimes, ambiguity can cause lots of problems if people fail to handle the ambiguity in English
properly. Thus, learning English ambiguity turns to be rather important and rational solutions to
erase ambiguity help people better convey and receive information. This paper analyses different
types of ambiguity in English from aspects of the phonological, the lexical, the syntactic and the
pragmatic, and illustrates several approaches to eliminate ambiguity.

Different types of ambiguity 3.1 Phonological ambiguity In linguistics, phonological ambiguity is a
type of ambiguity that arises out of the fact that words sound identical, but in fact have different
meanings. Besides, phonological ambiguity only occurs in spoken English(й‚±ж·‘еѕ·

liaison ambiguity and homophony ambiguity
3.1.1 Intonation
Different from Chinese, a tone language, English is an intonation language. As a musical element
of an utterance, intonation is defined as the variation of the voice pitch when speaking. In spoken
English, when people say words with more than one syllable or sentence with different intonation
placements, ambiguity usually occurs for people s different perceptions of information. Observing

In her stories, she depicted the lives of prairie farmers on the great plains. She glorified them over

Pneumoniae was identified as a common respiratory pathogen. Primarily, S. pneumoniae is a
commonly found in the upper respiratory tracts as a normal flora in humans. S. pneumoniae is the
most common cause of community acquired pneumonia where children are identified as the
primary carriers (Choa, 2014). S. pneumoniae is so common that health care providers have noted
key characteristics, making it apparent to detect and diagnose. More importantly, the common
phenotypic features of S. pnuemoniae are characterized by its colonic morphology being that it is
lancet shaped, catalase negative, optochin sensitivity and bile solubility. Pursuing this further, it is
important to follow strict testing procedures to distinguish which pathogen is preset, according to
their characteristics, in order to rule a diagnosis. Ideally, the First step in diagnosis of S.
pneumoniae can be determined using a Catalase test. In this test, S. Pneumoniae shows up as
catalase negative where further differentiation is made by the presence of a hemolytic pattern of
partial hemolysis on the blood agar plate. Another way to diagnose S. Pneumoniae is by using an
Optochin sensitivity test. This test is used to determine a specific classification of all Streptococcus
bacteria. The chemical, optochin, is used in the Optochin test to detect the sensitivity of bacteria,

Louis Joseph Watteau s Contribution to French Art
Louis Joseph Watteau Introduction What was Watteau s Contribution to French Art Louis
Joseph Watteau from Lille, France, who was also known as Watteau of Lille, was part of a
family of noted artists and painters during the 18th Century. He was born April 10, 1731, and he
died on August 27, 1798. Louis was the great nephew of great painter Jean Antoine Watteau and
he was the son of Joseph Watteau (1689 1756) and the brother of Jean Antoine Watteau. Hence,
it is clear that Louis Joseph Watteau had the advantage of being part of an extremely talented
family. Louis Joseph Watteau was apparently instrumental in the creation of the museum of Fine
Arts in Lille (which was launched in 1803 but much of the groundwork for this museum was laid
by Watteau). (Art Finding). According to Art Finding, Louis Joseph Watteau was the individual
responsible for the В¦first inventory of paintings confiscated during the French Revolution.
Watteau was an apprentice in 1738 1739 (at the age of 7 and 8) prior to moving to Paris to study
with Jacques Dumont ( the Roman ). Watteau also studied at the Royal Academy of Painting and
Sculpture and in 1755 (at the age of 24) he was appointed to be professor of art at the School of
Design in Lille (Art Finding). In 1757 Louis Joseph Watteau married Agnes Dandois in Maubeuge,
France, and the couple had 12 children, including Francis. He is considered one of the main
architects of the founding of the Academy of Valenciennes in 1783 (Art Finding).

Computer Storage History
Computers are amazing. They allow us to play games, take notes, watch movies, and even design
buildings. In order to do these things we need a way to access it in the form of computer storage.
Computer storage is a fundamental component of a computer, it allows us to save and load things.
Storage is space in a computerwhere data is to be processed and instructions required for
processing are stored. There are two units of memory which is primary storage and secondary
storage. Primary storage is the immediate access store where programs are located while they are
running. Secondary storage is used to hold data that is not currently being executed. There are
several different types of memory that our computer uses such as registers, cache, and tertiary
storage. For the purpose of this essay, we will go over the history or memory. We will focus on
the memories past, where it started and the early advancements. We will also talk about memories
present, and how it is used today. Lastly, we will go over the future of memory and how memory is
advancing.
First, we will talk about the memory s past how it started, what are some things that got us to
where we are today. Memory started off all the way back to the ancient Egyptians where they
would record hieroglyphs. When it came to computers, storage started off as more of a physical
object than digital. Memory was in the form of paper with holes punched in it to store information
called punched cards. The computer would read the

Electron Energy Levels
Atomic Emission Spectra and Electron Energy Levels The electromagnetic spectrum is the entirety
of the wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation, extending from high energy gamma rays to the
low energy radio waves, and in the middle lies visible light. Visible light of course being the light
that the human eye can see. When white lightis run through a prism, it becomes broken up into
different light spectrums, but visible light can also be emitted from different elements such as when
you burn them. By applying heat, the electrons of an element become excited and they rise to a
higher energy orbital and when the electrons fall back into a ground state, electromagnetic radiation
or light is emitted. These frequencies of light that can be emitted by an atomis called the atomic
emission spectra. Atoms are the simplest whole unit of matter and consist of a positively charged

The higher energy the electron falls from the higher energy the wavelength will be. This as stated

the respective energy ;levels. The highest energy or shorter wavelengths are on the left while the
right holds the lowest energy or longest wavelengths. Based on this, the energy difference of an
electrons fall from excited to ground is what determines the wavelength of light. A fall from the
outermost shell to the innermost would result in an emission of high energy wavelength such as
gamma or uv rays, while a relatively low fall will result in low energy wavelengths such as radio

Schizophrenia Is The Most Common Mental Illness
Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe disorder which is equal in both Men and Women and
affects one percent of the worlds population, it is the most common mental illness (Carlson 2014).
Schizophrenia is the suffering from a split mind which can start at a very early age and remain as
a lifelong disease. (Tsuang 1982) In the UK currently 250,000 people are suffering from
Schizophrenia. (Crow 1991) There are several symptoms which are found in Schizophrenics which
are characterised by positive, negative and cognitive symptoms. However some people may differ
differently due to their diagnosis of Schizophrenia. Some individuals may show all the symptoms
listed, whereas others may only display a small number of them. (Jones et al.) In addition, the
description of the symptoms of Schizophrenics indicates that the disorder has been around for
thousands of years. (Jeste et al.1985). According to the Biological approach, Schizophrenia occurs
due to brain abnormalities which involves the absence of normal behaviour. Although, due to
Schizophrenia being strongly genetic and heritable, the presence of unusual behaviour may be due
to underlying biological factors. (Carlson 2014) The main types of biological treatments available
for Schizophrenia are Electro convulsive therapy (ECT) and Psychosurgery, however there are other
drugs therapies available for Schizophrenia.
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was developed in the 1930s and is the most effective treatment

Summary Of Amos, Amos And Haggai
Summary of Amos and Haggai In the book of Amos, Amos is a shepherd and takes care of fig
trees (Amos 1:1, 7:14). He was not a prophet nor did he come from a family of prophets (Amos
7:14). Amos lived in the region of Tokoa, not far from the city of Jerusalem (Amos 1:1). God sent
Amos away primarily to the nation of Israel, this is where he would deliver his prophecy against
the northern kingdom of Israeland surrounding nations, thus leading to resistance from the Israelites
(Amos 7:12). During this time Uzziah was king of Judah from 781 to 740 B.C. and Jeroboam II
reigned in Israel from 783 to 743 B.C. (American BibleSociety). God spoke of the judgment on
Syria, Philistia, Edom, Ammon, Moab, Judah, and Israel for countless crimes (Amos 1:3 15, 2:1
16). Those in Judah, like Amos, were considered country bumpkins by the sophisticated people of
Israel (Smith). Amos contemptible to his audience (Smith). The prophet Amos main message was
that the Israelites had forgotten God s past punishments for unfaithfulness and selfishness.
There was a time of great prosperity between the countries of Israel and Judah and both countries
had reached new political and military heights (Amos: Introduction). The northern kingdom of
Israel had a reason to be feeling pleased with themselves from the money made off the trade routes
that passed through their territory, thus adding to their growing wealth, the weather was ideal for

his ear because he was too intelligent. Harrison s father was also forced to carry around a bag of
lead shot to make him not as strong as he could be, making him equal to everyone else. After
Harrison was taken away, his mother doesn t remember it and when she does subconsciously,
she cries and doesn t know why she is crying. After Harrison is taken he is forced to wear a large
pair of earphones, spectacles with thick wavy lenses which were meant to cause him to have
whanging headaches, and three hundred pounds of scrap metal. He then breaks free of his
restraints and storms a TV studio and takes it over, here he declares himself emperor. He then
declares that he needs an empress, then one of the ballerinas steps up, after removing her hideous
mask, she reveals her blinding beauty. They are both killed by the Handicapper General after they

In Vonnegut s All the King s Horses he talks about the cold war and how men become machines,
that war is a ritual human sacrifice and that we are just pawns in the game of life (Radovic). In the
short story, Pi Ying tells Kelly that chess games, like battles, can very rarely be won without
sacrifices and that, philosophically, and that the game he is required to play is no different.
Vonnegut also discusses the true horror of war that, in order to survive, men must become like
machines, denying their humanity. In Vonnegut s

How Does Watching Tv Corrupts The Mind
When people generally think of television, most may assume it rots the mind. Freelance writer
Rachel Krantz not only believes that TV is not useful for your mind, it may kill you, decrease your
chances of having kids, ruin the ones you do have, and possibly turn you violent. Could any of this
have happened to me as I was binge watching The Simpsons from seasons one to eight during the
summer? I initially thoughtthat this show was prone to dumb me down as I did this, but instead it
enlightened me through its clever writing. Even with gags as dumb as an old man hurt by a
football thrown to his groin, I felt as if no other show was as thoughtful and full of heart as The
Simpsons. Despite that Krantz s claims are backed by academic studies and research on television, it
should be the least concern for our minds. Television does not rot our minds; it intellectually
challenges and aptly adjusts our minds depending on how we use it.
The further time a kid spends watching television, the larger their brains grow. That seems great,
although apparently this is considered unhealthy for them. A recent Japanese study reveals that
as kids between ages 5 through 18 spend, on average, two hours of watching TV per day, certain
areas of their brains were growing. The rise in brain volume of these kids was linked to a fall in
their verbal IQ. However, the data in this study was not clear if TV watching caused this (Sanders).
While this study needs further elaboration and should be

Sleuthing The Alamo Summary
Sleuthing The Alamo is a story written by James E. Crisp sharing what he knows and his
experiences during Texas Revolution and the Alamo. After reading Sleuthing The Alamo by
James E. Crisp I learned about four different myths and how they affect the Spanish American
war. The four myths covered are Sam Hudson s Speech, the veracity of Jose Enrique de la Pena s
diary,Davy Crockett s legend, and finally Davy Crockett effects on the Alamo. In the book Crisp
speaks about what he knows of the TexasRevolution and also his experience with racism and
prejudice. With his experiences and knowledge we also learn the reality of the Alamo.
The first myth James E. Crisp covers is Sam Houston s speech to soldiers in 1836 It is said that the
speech was filled with very racist, anti mexican statements. Sam Houston made Crisp ... Show more

The de la PeГ±a papers were kept by an antique store owner in Mexico and they were also lost for
over a hundred years. A New York City detective Bill Groneman wrote a book, Defense of a
Legend: Crockett and the de la PeГ±a Diary, saying that the diary was a forgery by John A
Laffite, a.k.a. John A. Laflin. His argument was based on statements pertaining to the
publication date of the diary (believed to be in 1836). Crisp responded to this overlooking all
outside sources and looked directly to the source. The diary had two versions: a daily record of
de la PeГ±a s movements and de la PeГ±a s extension of the original, containing information he
gathered after the war from other witnesses who were there. De la PeГ±a s Disagreements with
the Mexican government landed him in jail, and he was never able to successfully publish a copy
of his journal. Crisp s interrogation into the original document explained all of Groneman s and
other disbeliever s disagreements with the

Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory Essay
Plot and Structure Mr. Willy Wonka, owner of the greatest chocolate factory in the world has
made the decision to open the doors of his factory to five lucky children and one parent. Mr.
Wonka has hidden five golden tickets within the wrappers of his famous Wonka chocolate bars,
where five lucky children will unwrap and receive a once in a lifetime chance to enter the
chocolate factory. Finding the golden tickets wasn t an easy task for some; like Charlie, who
grew up working as a child to help put food on the table for his family. As for others like,
Augustus Gloop, a child whose consistently eating was an easy task unwrapping the first golden
ticket. The second ticket was found by Veruca Salt, a bratty child who receives anything she wishes

The chocolate factory is a physical difference between poverty and wealth. Don t judge a book
by its cover as I have been told. From the outside of the Wonka chocolate factory it seems as if
the factory is an ordinary large factory where chocolate is produced and distributed. While
within the factory its true cover the true glories cannot be seen without a closer look. Another
symbol is the golden ticket. The ticket represents hope, hope in which any individual could
receive this once in a life time opportunity. The golden ticket also represents poverty vs. wealth.
The golden ticket, made entirely out of gold is the most valuable thing that Charlie has ever
touched in his life time. As for the ungrateful children the ticket meant popularity, being able to be
one of the five to ever walk into the Wonka factory. Finding the fifth and final golden ticket
allowed Charlie to live his dream. The last symbol within the film was the glass elevator, or the,
Great Glass Wonka vator, as Mr. Wonka had said himself. The glass elevator represent Charlie and
his families future that lies ahead of them. Characterizations and

High Level Writing Is Vital For My Current Standings As A...
Higher level writing is vital for my current standings as a college student and my future
endeavors. In order to receive positive responses on any papers or discussions, I must be able to
properly write on a college level. I have continuously worked on my writing skills throughout
English 101 and 102 and hope the skills I have gained in these courses will prepare me to write on
an intellectual level. Looking back at previous discussion posts, assignments, papers, and feedback
from peers and my instructor, I have achieved a large amount of insight to higher level writing. This
past semester I was required to create four major papers including Rhetorical Analysis Essay,
Annotated Bibliography, Exploratory Essay, and the Researched Position Paper. Each of these
papers entailed vigorous researchand time. My writing has progressively improved throughout the
semester in quoting, summarizing, and paraphrasing source material, as well as choosing academic
appropriate sources; however, I must strive to improve in general writing skills covering
organization, style, diction, grammar, and mechanics.
I felt that I did well on the third course objective of synthesizing ethically summarized, paraphrased,
and quoted source material into academic arguments. Typically, I used quotes strongly along with
information throughout my papers from numerous academic level sources. In my Researched
Position Paper Final, I quoted two sentences from Jeffrey Lieberman s article, How to Halt the

Stanley Milgram ( 1963 ) Essay
Stanley Milgram (1963) was interested in how likely people would obey an authority figure who
instructed them to harm another person. His study involved 40 male participants, aged 20 to 50,
who were recruited through advertisements and mail solicitation. Participants had diverse
occupations and educational levels. They came to a lab where they served as teachers in a
supposed learning and memory experiment. A simulated shock generator with 30 switches was
used. It was clearly marked with voltage levels and verbal designations ranging from 15 volts
(slight shock) to 450 volts (danger: severe shock). The participants task was to administer an
electric shock to the learner, a confederate of the experimenter, whenever he made an error in the
memory test, increasing the intensity of shock each time. When the participant refused to
administer a shock, the experimenter would give a series of prods to the participants to ensure that
they continue with the experiment, even if they reached the marked danger of a severe shock, or
heard the learner s screams and pounding from an adjacent room. The experiment ended when the
maximum voltage of shock had been delivered, or if the participant refused to continue any further.
The maximum intensity shock a participant was willing to administer before he refused to
participate any further was measured. The results showed that 26 out of 40 (65%) participants
obeyed the commands of the experimenter to the end, reaching the most potent shock

Themes In The Chrysanthemums
In John Steinbeck s The Chrysanthemums , the setting plays a significant role in the mood and
themes of the short story. Set in the 1930s a period of time also known as the Great Depression
in Salinas Valley, California, the tale revolves around the utter loneliness experienced by the
protagonist, Elisa Allen, who is closed off from the rest of the world not only by the land in
which she lives, but also by the stifling and sexist social expectations for women in her time. The
story itself begins with a description of the high gray flannel fog that that surrounds the valley on
every side... like a lid , with the only light being the pale, cold sunshine on the other side of the
river. In the middle of this desolate terrain, Mrs. Allen is an anomaly a sharp, eager womanor whose
energy even the chrysanthemum stems [seem] too small and easy . The oppressive fog, which
makes the great valley [into] a closed pot , reminds the reader of how trapped Elisa is; thus, the
landscape combines with the imposed gendernorms and patriarchal views of the twentieth century
to create a melancholy, claustrophobic tone that echoes through the story. From the very beginning,
Steinbeck emphasizes the smothering essence of Elisa s life, not only due to the expectations and
limitations placed on her because of her gender, but also as a parallel to the restrictive nature of the
setting.
Henry Allen is a complex character whose role in The Chrysanthemums is easily overlooked in
comparison to that of his wife Elisa, or the tinker; in the scenes that the reader witnesses, there is
always an unspoken boundary between Henry and his wife, a lack of intimacy that is rare for
most marriages. There are many instances where Henry tries to provide a more substantial,
fulfilling opportunity for his wife; he offers to allow her to work out in the orchard and raise
some apples as large as her chrysanthemums, in which he takes an interest only to say that they
are big . Clearly, he realizes that Elisa is capable of much more work than she does, and he also
does understand her joy and gift with [growing] things on a superficial level; however, he is as
oppressive as the society that forces the limitations on his wife, because

The Palace Of Versailles Housed The French Government
The Palace of Versailles housed the French government and all its royalty during the reigns of
Louis XIV XVI. After the French Revolution in 1789 however, it was no longer a permanent royal
residence for the government or royalty in France. It is located about 10 miles southwest of Paris,
beside the settlement of Versailles. Before Louis XIV inherited it, it was little more than a hunting
lodge built by Louis XIII, which he turned into a chateau. Soon however, it became one of the
largest urban centers, and the housing for many important officials in France. The Complex

special occasions. The Versailles was dressed to impress for shore, with the impressiveness the

The king built himself a Grand Trianon a mile northwest of the palace as a place for him to work
in private. People could only visit him there if invited, and it is said the garden of tuberoses
there had an overwhelming sent that drew people away. King Louis XIV s bedroom was built
on the upper floor, located centrally along the east west axis of the palace. It was considered was
the most important room in the palace. There they also had two of the3 important ceremonies
there, the lever and the coucher. They were just ceremonies for when the king woke up and
when he went to sleep. The king also had a ceremony for when he put on and took of his hunting
boots. People would attend the ceremonies as much as possible and did not desire to be absent.
the beauty of the palace itself complemented the ceremonies. The beauty emphasized the
achievements and power of the king himself. The king s bedroom and apartment were located
near the Hall of Mirrors which told a narrative of Louis XIV as King of France, and depicted
many of the battles fought in France. The king s throne was also located at the Apollo salon , and
he worshiped at the Royal chapel at the palace.

Segregation In School Segregation
On May 17, 1954 the United States Supreme Court handed down its ruling in the landmark case

Judicial Selection Process Analysis
According to the measure, supreme court and intermediate appellate court judges must be
appointed by the governor, confirmed by the Tennessee State Legislature, and face retention
elections at the end of their terms. This provided the state legislature with some input into the
process.Which lawyers are selected to be judges is determined by both informal and formal
methods. Major Judges are selected by three different ways. The first way is judges are appointed
by executives like governors and the president. The United StatesConstitution gives power to the
President and Senate nominate who will become judges. The second way is they are elected by
voters Judges are chosen by a legislative committee based on each potential judge s past
performance. Some states hold retention electionsto determine if the judge should continue to serve.

The Merit selection removes the courts from any politics (Neubauer Fradella, 2014). This
system is used when voters just simply have no way of deciding who makes the best fit, and
who would potentially make a good judge. I would say to avoid an unfair selection, you really
cannot safely say what is considered a better way or the best way to hire judges. I would choose
the judicial selection. By choosing this method it holds the communities accountable. But I will
say that the selection of judges would be my second choice because of the fact that presidents and
governors make judicial selections based on the backgrounds and records of candidates. So what
one has brought to the table and what one has proven to the states means a

How Is Brutus Justified In Killing Caesar
Et tu, Brute! Then fall, Caesar, Caesar cried as he breathed his last and fell to the floor of the
senate house. His blood flowed from the dagger holes in his body, pooling at the feet of his
murderers. And there he lay, dead, slayed by the hand of his former friend Brutus. His so
trusted, so honorable friend, upon whom he thought he could depend, had betrayed him. Some
may say that Brutus was not a Betrayer, as he did what he did because he loved Rome more than
Caesar. While it may be true that Brutus loved Rome and was a patriot, this does not change his
actions of betrayal towards Caesar. While Caesar s murder was gruesome, some would argue that
the patriotism and control displayed by Brutus justifies the necessary removal of Caesar. After all,
Burutus does prevent the death of Antony by saying that Our course will seem too bloody, Caius
Cassius, To cut the head off and then hack the limbs,...And, gentle friends, Let s kill him boldly, but

Caesar that I have not known when his affections sway d More than his reason, and on the
Lupercal I thrice presented him a kingly crown, Which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition?
This indicates that Caesar had not shown any dangerous ambition in the past, and so if Brutus

Chinook Salmon Research Paper
An endangered species is a species of either plant or animal that is in serious risk of becoming
extinct. This name became connected with the Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in
1994 after being petitioned to be put on the list for nine years (NOAA). There are two main reasons
behind the endangerment of the Chinook salmon: over exploration, and dams. Since the times of the
Native Americans, Chinook salmonhave been highly sought after as a food source. Since then the
salmon have experienced great amounts of overfishing. Along with water demands which has
resulted in overuse of water and diversion of water had affected spawning sites and loss of habitat
putting further strain on their habitats (National Wildlife Federation). Dams have arguably put the
largest strain on the Chinook salmon. In Columbia RiverBasin of the Pacific Northwest alone, over
55% of historical spawning habitat has been blocked off by dams (Harrison, 2008) Damn also
cause rivers to slow down which in turn causes them to become warmer. This makes for a less
ideal habitat for the salmon, and more ideal circumstances for the predators of the salmon. The
slowing of a river can also be cause for disease( U.S.F.W.S). Also only about 1% of present

To protect the salmon, would essentially be to protect their ecosystems as well. That is not to say
that there would not be some positive economic impacts. More salmon, means an increase in the

Labor Day Essay
Labor Day is a dedication to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It
constitutes a yearly national acknowledgment to the contributions that workers have made to the
strength, prosperity and well being of our country. It has evolved from a purely labor union
celebration into a general last fling of summer festival. The origin and deeper meaning of the day
has been forgotten, or never actually known to many.
The beginnings of the American Labor Movement started with the Industrial Revolution. Once
factory systems began to grow, a demand for workers increased. They hired large amounts of young
women and children who were expected to do the same work as men for less wages. New
immigrants were also employed and called ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was founded in 1869 by garment workers in Philadelphia who believed that one union of
skilled and unskilled workers should exist. The union was originally a secret, but later was open
to all workers, including blacks, women and farmers. Five hundred thousand workers joined in a
year. Their goals were an eight hour work day, a minimum wage, arbitration rather than strikes,
health and safety laws, equal pay for equal work, no child labor under the age of fourteen, and
government ownership of railroads, telegraphs and telephones. However, the Knights of Labor was
a relatively weak organization, and eventually fell apart.
In 1886, the American Federation of Labor (AF of L) was formed and replaced the Knights of
Labor. Its leader was former cigar union official Samuel Gompers who only wanted to focus on
skilled workers. The AF of L was a conglomeration of twenty five unions that included three
hundred thousand workers working for increasing wages, reducing hours, and improving working
conditions. Gompers believed that everyone should receive equal pay for equal work, and that
everyone s rights should be protected. He also thought the unions should be primarily concerned
with the day to day welfare of the members and should not become involved with politics. He also
thought that socialism would not succeed in the United States. quot;Bread and butter quot;

Working out can be strenuous at times. Therefore, you might commence to experience muscle
fatigue. The central factor for muscle fatigue is the accumulation of lactic acid that builds up due

Malware And Remote Access Trojan
The main topic which will be studied and analysed in this research is the malware s characteristic
behaviour; however, their features such as backdoors and Remote Access Trojan will be also
examined in order to discover mechanisms for effective detection of malware. The mechanisms
should be sufficient to detect both sophisticated such as Advanced Persistent Threats or simple
malicious activities for instance Denial of Service attacks, viruses etc. Prior to this, the researcher
will need to answer the questions what advanced persistent threats are and how they are different to
traditional malwares. Moreover, features and characteristic of both known traditional threads and
APTs will learned during literature review and while performing own experiment. Subsequently, the
researcher will design his own lab environment to perform further analysis. Then, all obtained data
will be used to create effective methods of advanced persistent and traditional threats detection in a
network. Moreover, the detection mechanism will not generated generate a large number of false
positives, thus non malicious normal activities indicated as suspicious.

  • 2. The s Defense Of Icons In Defense of Icons Throughout history The Church and a number of Christians including myself have found themselves defending their use of icons against the views of individuals who felt that the icons were a form of idolatry. These individuals also know as Iconoclasts have a staunch position against the use of icons. Their position is based on interpretation of the Old Testamentlaw stated in Exodus 20:4 You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea . Is this truly contrary to the Old Testament law or is it simply preserving through time the incarnation of Christ, the Gospels and the history of the Christian church? I will give you a brief history, and then offer my personal opinion to the subject. Let s define what is an icon and give a brief history of icons. An icon is sacred art, usually a fresco or mosaic of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, martyred Saints or scenes from the bible that are given special veneration. This type of sacred art first appeared in the catacombs were the first Christians would gather to worship during periods of persecution. The scenes depicted were of Christ s family, gospel stories or stories from the Hebrew scriptures. As Christianitybegan to grow, and after the Edict of Milan the Emperor Constantine decreed that Christians were no longer to be persecuted. In response to this new decree, by the fourth century icons became a way of teaching the Gospel and a way to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Comparison of Themes Between Lord of the Flies and... The Comparison of Themes between Lord of the Flies and Animal Farm The author of Animal Farm, Orwell, tells a story of a farmyard tragedy and the deadly lives of a group of animals. Due to the disappearance of humans, Napoleon abuses his power and gradually transforms into a human. Orwell also used animals to clarify that humans are corrupted due to power. The author of Lord of the Flies, Golding, shows a similar story where it is about life and death situation for a group of lost boys on a island that is trying to establish a democracy while on the island. Both authors of novels, Lord of the Flies and Animal Farm demonstrate the comparison between the theme of human and animal nature in settings where traditional authority absent. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The characters of the novel are fit to the theme of man s intuitive evilness, as the boys are under the age of 14. When they continue to enjoy torturing others, they reveal their enjoyment of being savages. They do not desire any order or law of directing force in their state of savagery. In Animal Farm, George Orwell uses satirical allegory throughout his novel to present the pessimistic view of human nature. The animal fable is used to demonstrate the issues of unfair treatment, exploitation and inequality in society. It is evident that this irony is particularly evident in the ending of both novels (Gulbin 88). The satirist irony is directed on the events of the Russian Revolution and on the totalitarian regime. Orwell uses political reason with creative reason to show his negative belief that people only change the dictators though revolutions but the systems stay the same. It is only a dream that people can gain a classless society through revolutions. Orwell believes that everyone wants equality, yet it is in one s nature as human beings to obtain power. Napoleon, who is represented as an evil power hungry pig, becomes the villain that destroys the farm through his manipulative acts such as abusing the animals, cutting rations, increasing labor, and in the end making an imbalance of equality. The revolution that promised freedom delivered for some the strong, the well armed, and slavery for all the others (Donald E. Morse 89). Instead of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Parent Trap Essay The Parent Trap is a film from 1998 that takes place in London, Napa (California) and Maine. First it begins in the Summer Camp in Maine, where two redheads Annie and Hallie coincidentally meet. In there they found out that they were twins and that the last 12 years they have lived apart, but not only from each other also from their parents. As well they decided to change places, so Hallie instead of going to Napa with his father, goes with her mom to London and Annie with his dad to Napa. After the unconventional plan of reunited their parents, they decided that they needed to know more about each other, so the plan could work. Eventually it was the end of the summer camp, so each sister went to their new home, but in the end their parents figure it out. The kids try to be subtle because only her mom knew about the switch. Finally, when they get reunited in a Hotel his dad knew about it in a very impressive moment because he was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the other part it also has plenty of fun moments. Hallie and Annie made an impressive role especially because it was the same person Lindsay Lohan acting for the two sisters. Because of this I think that this movie was a well received film because it doesn t matter that now days is old the kids still enjoyed watching it. In 1961 and 1986 was the first movie The Parent Trap, but in this movie the actress was Hayley Mills. This film has the same story of the one of Lindsay Lohan, but in this one the events change, it tells you about that two sisters were separated since birth, and one lived in Boston and the other one in California. In my opinion I think that both movies are good, but honestly, IВґd rather watch the one of Lindsay Lohan. • 5. Children and Teens Know Right from Wrong Do you believe that children know right from wrong the moment they start to lie? I do, because the moment they don t listen to you or do something wrong knowing it is wrong but they do it anyway, that s when they know right from wrong. Two to thirteen year olds are a prime example. But the biggest example is teenagers. Teenagers do crazy stuff that can get them in trouble just to be cool. That s mostly why we have so many teens going to jail. Many teens shoplift in the presence of friends out of a desire to impress others, as oftentimes the teens that engage in the riskiest behaviors are the most popular with peers. (Lisa Medoff; When Teenagers Steal). Teens misbehave just to get attention. I don t think teens should have to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The desire to fit in with peers can be a very strong influence on teens. There are two different types of peer pressure. Negative peer pressure is when teens feel pressured to do something they know is wrong. Positive peer pressure is when your friends push you to do something that is good and helpful to others. Negative peer pressure can lead to, smoking, drinking, doing drugs, or stealing, or doing something you don t want to do such as cutting class or having sex. (Unknown; Positive and Negative Peer Pressure). Teens may be tempted to give in to negative peer pressure because they want to be liked or fit in. They may also do it because they are afraid of being made fun of, or they want to try something other teens are doing. Positive peer pressure is everybody s favorite. It shows how friends can help each other do great things. Good friends are a great example. They can encourage teens to do well in school, get involved in positive activities, volunteer, eat healthy foods, and avoid drugs, alcohol, and other risky activities. (Unknown; Peer Pressure). Good Friends or best friends can also help teens learn good social skills and better ways to communicate and work out problems, and give teens good advice. I think peer pressure plays an important role in a young teen s life. Sometimes it basically controls their life. It can also help with lying or doing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Interesting Industry of Japanese Whaling Essay If I had one year to learn more about a topic of my choice, I would study about the Japanese whaling industry. Although whale hunting in Japan began in the 12th century, Japan s involvement in the whaling industry began in the 1890s. The international whaling industry functioned normally until 1925 when the League of Nations called for conservation measures in 1925. This eventually led to the Geneva Convention for the Regulation of Whalingin 1931, which was ignored by Japan and Germany. Instead, as whale catches diminished in coastal waters, Japanese whale hunters looked to Antarctica. This started with the Japanese company Toyo Hogei K.K. purchasing the Norwegian ship Antarctic, renaming it the Tonan Maru. However, World War II soon... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Japan joined the International Whaling Commission in 1951; however, Japan would later be criticized by environmental organizations and anti whaling nations for making heavy use of Article VIII of the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling which states that Notwithstanding anything contained in this Convention any Contracting Government may grant to any of its nationals a special permit authorizing that national to kill, take and treat whales for purposes of scientific research subject to such restrictions as to number and subject to such other conditions as the Contracting Government thinks fit, and the killing, taking, and treating of whales in accordance with the provisions of this Article shall be exempt from the operation of this Convention. As the commercial viability of large competing whaling fleets was diminished due to restrictions, six Japanese whaling companies agreed to merge into one in July 1975. The government declared support for the new company, with Prime Minister Shintaro Abe saying, We ask that the flame of the whaling industry will not be put out and that you do your best to secure Japan s food supplies. The government will be doing all it can to actively support your efforts. Eventually, the company merged with the Japan Whaling Association and Institute of Cetacean Researchto create the Institute of Cetacean Research in 1987. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Case Of Johnson Johnson Although emergencies are unexpected by nature, the true character of a company is revealed by how they react and handle a crisis. In 1982, seven individuals died in Chicago from taking Extra Strength Tylenol capsules, which were laced with cyanide. Tylenol became one of Johnson Johnson s most successful products, accounting for 17 percent of the company s profits. Extra Strength Tylenol constituted 70 percent of all Tylenol sales (Lazare). Johnson Johnson took full accountability for the crisis even though they were... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead, the company advertised in the national media for individuals not to consume any products that contained acetaminophen. When it was determined that only capsules were tampered with, they offered to exchange all Tylenol capsules already purchased by the public with solid tablets (Lazare). Johnson Johnson offered a $100,000 reward for the capture and conviction of the Tylenol Killer whom was never found (Yang). The media commended Johnson Johnson for it s handling of the crisis; for example, an article in The Washington Post said, Johnson Johnson has effectively demonstrated how a major business ought to handle a disaster. The article further stated that this is no Three Mile Island accident in which the company s response did more damage than the original incident, and praised the company for being honest with the public (Kaplan). Johnson Johnson could have easily blamed the stores for not protecting their product and for allowing someone to tamper with the capsules. This could possibly have led to a lawsuit because the Johnson Johnson brand was briefly tarnished from public outcry and scrutiny, which ultimately hurt their business and reputation; something that money cannot restore. Like most large companies, Johnson Johnson could have dismissed the situation by preparing a simple written statement or apology in response to the seven deaths, which would deflect their liability in the situation. • 8. Greed In Macbeth Shakespeare was, and still is, the most celebrated playwright, poet, and actor both during his life and current day. He published many great works with amazing themes. However there is none greater than theme of greed portrayed in The Tragedy of Macbeth. Greed is played predominantly throughout this entire play in several characters, but most by none other than MacBethand his lovely wife, Lady MacBeth. Not only is theme of greed shown throughout this play, Shakespeare goes as to far as to show how greed can change a person s outlook, persona, and life. Lady MacBeth was one of the biggest antagonist through the first half of MacBeth. She was greedy and wanted power more than anything, including her husband s reservations about murder and getting ... He hasn t tasted power, and doesn t necessarily have thirst for it, but his wife obviously does. Shmoop.com writers even accurately state, MacBeth treats Lady MacBeth as an equal, if not more dominant partner , and that is where issues begin. MacBeth was actually happy being named thane of Cawdor, but didn t last too long due to his wife. His wife shares a plan to invite Duncan, the King at the time, over, get him and the guards drunk, kill Duncan, and plant the evidence on the now dead gaurds. At first, MacBeth was really hesitant towards, and thought he was time will simply come. He does, however, go through with the act of killing Duncan. After the death of the king, MacBeth really starts to lose it. He becomes just like his wife, and wants nothing more than power. It s ironic as MacBeth becomes more and more greedy, his wife starts see how greed is an awful thing, MacBeth, who was once happy just being thane of Cawdor, is now so greedy as king that he tries to kill his best friend and his offspring just to simply make sure he stays in power all with no help from his wife. • 9. The Picture Of Dorian Gray And A Nymph s Reply To The... Sydney Pefferman Cavolt LA III Honors/Period 2 28 May 2017 The temptation to feel worth through external beauty, drives each and every person to go to extreme lengths to make themselves seem as presentable as possible. Because of society s high prioritization of external appearance, I always personally feel pressured to look and act a certain way. However, many new perspectives on beauty were revealed to me through novels I read throughout this year. Both The Picture of Dorian Gray and A Nymph s Reply to the Shepherd work to develop an overarching theme that possessing a superficial faith in youth and beauty, will ultimately lead to one s damnation. The Nymph s Reply to the Shepherd is a response written by Walter Raleighwith the intention of mocking the ideas in Christopher Marlowes poem The Passionate Shepherd to His Love . Marlowe s poem depicts a young shepherd attempting to seduce his love by enticing her with an impractical version of the life they could live together. From this poem Raleigh composed The Nymph s Reply to the Shepherd which was used to scorn Marlowe s unrealistic and fantastical views. Throughout his poem Raleigh utilizes natural imagery to convey his central idea that all things will eventually be forced to relinquish their beauty. While the passionate shepherd promises nature s beauty and an abundance of gifts, the nymph in Raleigh s poem reveals that such promises could only be valid if all the world and love were young. In reality, the change in seasons would cause the shepherd s shallow rivers to rage, rocks to grow cold and roses to fade. While the shepherd s gifts may be persuading, Raleigh reveals that their effect is too fleeting; they would soon break, soon wither and be soon forgotten. In the end, the nymph acknowledges that as time pases all of these trivial things she was once offered will all be subject to change and decay, leaving nothing in their worth. Raleigh s portrayal of the fleeting state of beauty helped encourage me to stop judging myself and others based on external appearance, and focus more on positive internal qualities that I know will not fade with age. My journey throughout this year was also heavily affected by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Women in Singapore should be allowed to fight in the front line Being part of the front line combat refers to being part of the most advanced tactical combat units forming a military line. Women in Singapore should be allowed to fight in the front line. It is undeniable that it would require high physical strength that most women lack, but women can be trained to be just as capable as men, if not better, or assume front line positions requiring less physical strength. It would only be fair to give equal opportunities to women who are able to meet the same requirements as men and it would also promote equality with them being as capable as the men. Restricting women because they are weaker is a generalised statement and not a fact that associates with specific women. Major Gregory Trahan was witness to a female supply sergeant replacing a trained infantryman after running through a gauntlet of seven mortar rounds that exploded continuously as the three vehicle convoy he was commanding came under fire during his 2003 2004 tour in and around Ramadi, Iraq. When the squad automatic weapon (SAW) gunner in her truck was shot, but not severely injured and was too terrified to get back on the gun, she radioed back to Major Gregory Trahan and received instructions to get someone back up there, so she put the gunner in her seat, got up, and started pulling security with the vehicle. The irony was, the gunner who had been pulling security on that truck was the armorer, who was an infantryman and the backbone of the army, while she was just a supply sergeant, and women were barred from the job of that armorer. • 11. The European Union s Economic And Monetary Union Abe Hannigan Professor Wickham POLS 120 The European Union launched the economic and monetary union (EMU) of Europe on January 1st, 1999. January 1st of 2002 marked the establishment of a single currency through the introduction of euro bills and coins to 12 EU states. Formally called the eurozone , the movement to a single currency has developed as 18 EU member states currently use the euro. Desiring further political integration, the EMU was designed to maintain price stability through a central bank known as the European Central Bank (ECB). Although economic certainty was the goal, a financial crisis that erupted within the eurozone lead to questions about the credibility of the EMU. The debate over political integration was furthered by the introduction of ideas for increased fiscal federalism, similar to the current policies within the United States currency union. For a monetary union to succeed, a fiscal union is necessary to solve the vulnerabilities of the EMU and supervise national policy to prevent macroeconomic imbalances throughout Europe. However, the dispute over political centralization impedes the establishment of such a fiscal system within the upcoming decade. As it remains a proposal rather than a policy, interpretations of fiscal union differ; however, as defined, its purpose would create a set of rules for national governments concerning tax and budget policies essentially leading to policy coordination among EU member states. • 12. Wilhelm Reich Essay Wilhelm Reich was born in the Austro Hungarian Empire on March 24th, 1897. His parents were farmers, and at a young age Reich developed a fascination with the life processes of plants and animals. His formal education at this time was provided by a private tutor. When Reich was 14, he discovered his mother was having an affair with his tutor. After Reich reported this to his father, his mother committed suicide. Atwood and Stolorow (1977) have speculated that this tragedy may have contributed to Reich s most significant theories. Because sexuality is often shrouded in ignorance and shame, many people are not able to attain this release and, according to Reich, are thereby doomed to ill health and neurotic disturbances. In order to combat societal pressure and educate the youth, Reich began organizing mental hygiene clinics and sex counseling. He also began joining liberal and socialistic groups at this time, convinced that only an overthrow of authoritarian society could ultimately alleviate the neurotic suffering of its constituents. To this end, in 1930 he left his wife and daughters and traveled to Berlin to join the Communist Party. Three years later, Reich would be expelled from the Party because of his views regarding sexuality. With the rise of Hitler, Reich left Germany and traveled to Denmark, and then fled to Sweden to escape the Nazis. Sweden expelled him, and Reich moved on to Norway, where he began his bion experiments. It was during these experiments that he discovered what he would term orgone energy, a form of life energy which the bions emitted. He built and began experimenting with a device intended to attract and concentrate orgone energy, the orgone accumulator, or ORAC. In 1939, Reich accepted an invitation to lecture at the New School for Social Research in New York City, and he moved to the United States. He married again, and in 1944 his son Peter was born. Urinary incontinence is more prevalent in elderly people, and predominantly affects women more often than men. Urinary incontinence can be is described as the uncontrolled loss of urine, and can be broken down into five different types. The first type of urinary incontinenceis stress incontinence, which occurs when there is involuntary emission of urine due to coughing, sneezing, or applying any increased pressure to the abdominal region. The second type is urge incontinence, which is when a person has a strong need to void, the bladder then spasms, and the person experiences a spontaneous loss of urine. The third type of incontinence that a person may experience is referred to as mixed incontinence. A person may experience a combination of symptoms from any of the five types of incontinence. The fourth type of incontinence is overflow incontinence. Typically a person s bladder fills completely, often without the urge to void, resulting in urinary dribbling. Lastly, there is functional incontinence. During this type of incontinence a person is generally aware of the urge to void, but due to some physical or mental deficit, a person has the inability to make it to the restroom. This poses many problems for both the patient and for the hospitals. As the numbers for UI continue to rise, the risk for falls will increase, as well as increasing the amount ... Ninety Five Theses In this essay i m going to be writing about the ninety five theses. The Ninety Five Theses question the Catholic Church s practice of selling indulgences and view skeptically the notion that a papal pardon rather than penance or genuine contrition can achieve forgiveness of sins. Luther argued that Christians were being falsely told that they could obtain absolution for souls in purgatory by buying indulgences. All Saints Church in Wittenberg, Saxony in the Holy Roman Empire, locally known as the Castle Church Schlosskirche, where the Ninety Five Theses famously appeared, held one of Europe s largest collections of holy relics. Albert of Mainz, the Archbishop of Mainz in Germany, had borrowed heavily to pay for his high church rank and was deeply in debt. He agreed to allow the sale of the indulgences in his territory in exchange for a cut of the proceeds. Luther was apparently not aware of this. Even though Luther s prince, Frederick III, and the prince of the neighboring territory, George, Duke of Saxony, forbade the sale thereof in their respective lands, people in Wittenberg traveled to purchase them. When these people came to confession, they presented their plenary indulgences for which they paid, claiming they no longer had to repent of their sins, since the document promised to forgive all their sins. Luther was outraged that they had paid money for what was theirs by right as a free gift from God. He felt compelled to expose the fraud that was being sold to the people. This exposure was to take place in the form of a public scholarly debate at the University of Wittenberg. If we aren t able to understands our youths way of communication and not only get involved with their language we have to educate them of the pitfalls of electronic media and communications. If the church doesn t find a way to stay in step with our youth we are going to lose them. We would not be able to participate in on line educational discussions if we didn t have the electronic means to do so. This vision demands that leaders in the church wrestle with the complexity of embodying the Gospel in culture. As the church rediscovers its unique role in culture, and supports the calling of their cultural influencers, it will be a force for good in our communities, cities and the country. The call to the church to all Christians is to rediscover the cultural mandate, embracing the opportunity to influence culture. In the church, we must teach about calling and cultural influence and provide vital support to cultural leaders. We must become an integral piece of the local culture, convening and encouraging creation of future culture that serves the common good. • 17. A Summary of William Shakespeare s Henry IV Part 1 Henry IV, Part 1 William Shakespeare is considered the most important playwright of the European Renaissance, if not the most important of all time. Each character in his collected works is uniquely defined and highly memorable. In Henry IV, Part I, Shakespeare writes about the struggle for the control of England during the time of the title king. Everything is in turmoil following his ascension to the throne and his legacy is in question because of the perceived personality of his successor to the crown. Not only does he endeavor to maintain his control of the throne, but also vying are his son Hal who wants to takeover after his father and the rival Hotspur who wants it for himself but also is representative of an entire faction of people who want to rebel against Henry IV and do not feel loyal to him. Each of these men believes himself to be rightfully entitled to become the king and this is a major theme that play out throughout the play, namely what it means to be worthy of the title King of England; being king is far more than a matter of luxury and power, it is a burden that only worthy men should be allowed to undertake. For the current ruler of England, King Henry IV, he believes himself entitled because of what he was willing to do in order to obtain the throne. The former king, Richard II, was murdered and his chosen heir passed over by the zealous Henry. This perception of him as a usurper of the throne spreads out to those who had once supported him. The murder theory inflamed when the first x ray test of the mummy in 1968 indicated an inter cranial bone fragment lodged within the skull suggesting a blow to the death. Pharaohs were regarded as living Gods, even more than the political and religious leader, and to kill the Pharaoh was inconceivable. Throughout history, there are very few instances that record a Pharaoh being assassinated, and in Tut s case too the murder theory was discarded when conclusive evidence emerged that showed that the damage had been done after the mummification. According to the Biological approach, Schizophrenia occurs due to brain abnormalities which involves the absence of normal behaviour. This information can be captured through physiological instruments that measure heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation levels, blood glucose, nerve conduction, brain activity and so forth. Traditionally, such measurements are taken at specific points in time and noted on a patient s chart. Physicians actually see less than one percent of these values as they make their rounds and treatment decisions are made based upon these isolated readings. Biomedical signal processing involves the analysis of these measurements to provide useful information upon which clinicians can make decisions. He was not a prophet nor did he come from a family of prophets (Amos 7:14). Amos lived in the region of Tokoa, not far from the city of Jerusalem (Amos 1:1). God sent Amos away primarily to the nation of Israel, this is where he would deliver his prophecy against the northern kingdom of Israeland surrounding nations, thus leading to resistance from the Israelites (Amos 7:12). During this time Uzziah was king of Judah from 781 to 740 B.C. and Jeroboam II reigned in Israel from 783 to 743 B.C. (American BibleSociety). God spoke of the judgment on Syria, Philistia, Edom, Ammon, Moab, Judah, and Israel for countless crimes (Amos 1:3 15, 2:1 16). Those in Judah, like Amos, were considered country bumpkins by the sophisticated people of Israel (Smith). Amos contemptible to his audience (Smith). The prophet Amos main message was that the Israelites had forgotten God s past punishments for unfaithfulness and selfishness. There was a time of great prosperity between the countries of Israel and Judah and both countries had reached new political and military heights (Amos: Introduction). Freelance writer Rachel Krantz not only believes that TV is not useful for your mind, it may kill you, decrease your chances of having kids, ruin the ones you do have, and possibly turn you violent. Could any of this have happened to me as I was binge watching The Simpsons from seasons one to eight during the summer? I initially thoughtthat this show was prone to dumb me down as I did this, but instead it enlightened me through its clever writing. Even with gags as dumb as an old man hurt by a football thrown to his groin, I felt as if no other show was as thoughtful and full of heart as The Simpsons. Despite that Krantz s claims are backed by academic studies and research on television, it should be the least concern for our minds. Television does not rot our minds; it intellectually challenges and aptly adjusts our minds depending on how we use it. The further time a kid spends watching television, the larger their brains grow. That seems great, although apparently this is considered unhealthy for them. A recent Japanese study reveals that as kids between ages 5 through 18 spend, on average, two hours of watching TV per day, certain areas of their brains were growing. His study involved 40 male participants, aged 20 to 50, who were recruited through advertisements and mail solicitation. Participants had diverse occupations and educational levels. They came to a lab where they served as teachers in a supposed learning and memory experiment. A simulated shock generator with 30 switches was used. The participants task was to administer an electric shock to the learner, a confederate of the experimenter, whenever he made an error in the memory test, increasing the intensity of shock each time. When the participant refused to administer a shock, the experimenter would give a series of prods to the participants to ensure that they continue with the experiment, even if they reached the marked danger of a severe shock, or heard the learner s screams and pounding from an adjacent room. The experiment ended when the maximum voltage of shock had been delivered, or if the participant refused to continue any further. • 47. Themes In The Chrysanthemums In John Steinbeck s The Chrysanthemums , the setting plays a significant role in the mood and themes of the short story. Set in the 1930s a period of time also known as the Great Depression in Salinas Valley, California, the tale revolves around the utter loneliness experienced by the protagonist, Elisa Allen, who is closed off from the rest of the world not only by the land in which she lives, but also by the stifling and sexist social expectations for women in her time. The story itself begins with a description of the high gray flannel fog that that surrounds the valley on every side... like a lid , with the only light being the pale, cold sunshine on the other side of the river. In the middle of this desolate terrain, Mrs. Allen is an anomaly a sharp, eager womanor whose energy even the chrysanthemum stems [seem] too small and easy . The oppressive fog, which makes the great valley [into] a closed pot , reminds the reader of how trapped Elisa is; thus, the landscape combines with the imposed gendernorms and patriarchal views of the twentieth century to create a melancholy, claustrophobic tone that echoes through the story. From the very beginning, Steinbeck emphasizes the smothering essence of Elisa s life, not only due to the expectations and limitations placed on her because of her gender, but also as a parallel to the restrictive nature of the setting. Henry Allen is a complex character whose role in The Chrysanthemums is easily overlooked in comparison to that of his wife Elisa, or the tinker; in the scenes that the reader witnesses, there is always an unspoken boundary between Henry and his wife, a lack of intimacy that is rare for most marriages. There are many instances where Henry tries to provide a more substantial, fulfilling opportunity for his wife; he offers to allow her to work out in the orchard and raise some apples as large as her chrysanthemums, in which he takes an interest only to say that they are big . Clearly, he realizes that Elisa is capable of much more work than she does, and he also does understand her joy and gift with [growing] things on a superficial level; however, he is as oppressive as the society that forces the limitations on his wife, because ... This name became connected with the Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in 1994 after being petitioned to be put on the list for nine years (NOAA). There are two main reasons behind the endangerment of the Chinook salmon: over exploration, and dams. Since the times of the Native Americans, Chinook salmonhave been highly sought after as a food source. Since then the salmon have experienced great amounts of overfishing. Along with water demands which has resulted in overuse of water and diversion of water had affected spawning sites and loss of habitat putting further strain on their habitats (National Wildlife Federation). Dams have arguably put the largest strain on the Chinook salmon. In Columbia RiverBasin of the Pacific Northwest alone, over 55% of historical spawning habitat has been blocked off by dams (Harrison, 2008) Damn also cause rivers to slow down which in turn causes them to become warmer. • 56. Malware And Remote Access Trojan The main topic which will be studied and analysed in this research is the malware s characteristic behaviour; however, their features such as backdoors and Remote Access Trojan will be also examined in order to discover mechanisms for effective detection of malware. The mechanisms should be sufficient to detect both sophisticated such as Advanced Persistent Threats or simple malicious activities for instance Denial of Service attacks, viruses etc. Prior to this, the researcher will need to answer the questions what advanced persistent threats are and how they are different to traditional malwares. Moreover, features and characteristic of both known traditional threads and APTs will learned during literature review and while performing own experiment. Subsequently, the researcher will design his own lab environment to perform further analysis. Then, all obtained data will be used to create effective methods of advanced persistent and traditional threats detection in a network. Moreover, the detection mechanism will not generated generate a large number of false positives, thus non malicious normal activities indicated as suspicious. 1.2 Traditional malware characteristic Malicious software often known as malware is simply code that includes either virus, Trojan or worms.
