This document outlines the history of art and design course taught by Erry Arham Azmi at the Faculty of Art and Design, UniseL in the 2011/2012 session. The objectives are to understand basic concepts of art history and apply semiotic concepts to appreciate art from prehistoric eras to contemporary works. Students will learn to analyze works using the six characteristics of semiotics: addressor, addressee, message, codes, medium and context. They will also study elements and principles of art and design, and review developments in indigenous art, Malaysian modern art, Islamic art, and prehistoric art. The first two weeks cover introductions to the power of images and six components of semiotics concepts.
