Unit 2
Lesson 1: Chinese, Korean and Japanese Paintings and
Printmaking
Introduction:
This unit will bring and introduce you to the
different arts, traditions and cultural
backgrounds of East Asia countries namely
- China
- Japan
- Korea
These countries have been noted for their
numerous similarities in their art production,
artistic traditions, and principles of arts as
influenced by their history, beliefs, religious,
culture and rulers.
This unit will guide you in your journey to the
rich cultural diversity of the arts and crafts as
inspired by the different creative folk arts and
designs of the East Asian countries. The salient
features of the arts of East Asia show the
relationship of the art elements, principles
and processes among culturally diverse
communities in the region.
This unit presents the different characterisitics
of the arts and crafts in specific countries in
East Asia:
- China ( painting, kites, architecture, and
calligraphy )
- Japan ( origami, woodblock printing, face
painting, and anime manga )
- Korea ( theater masks and painting )
The lessons in this unit also help the students
recognize the commonalities and differences
of the culture of East Asian countries in
relation to Philippine culture. The topics
explain context of the East Asian magnificent
artworks that influence the wider world of art.
The topics also highlight the distinct
characteristics of textiles, crafts, accessories,
architecture, sculptures, and other everyday
objects.
It is evident in the unit that the arts and crafts
of Korea, Japan, and China get their
inspirations from nature. Moreover the topics
and activities presented in this unit can help in
deepening the following domains; art
appreciation, art history, art production, and
art criticism of East Asian countries.
