This document discusses art and architectural appreciation in education. It describes how site visits and case studies help students understand design principles and appreciate various art forms, including architecture. The methodology section explains the seven pillars of art appreciation: subject matter, form, function, era/movement, composition, style/character, and color/texture. A case study of a 300-350 year old wada in Nagpur is presented, where students appreciated how it maintained dignity through modern and ancient design features like wooden structures, jali work, and interior elements. The conclusion states that such experiences improve students' visualization, observation, and creative skills in art and architecture appreciation.

ABSTRACT
The Aim of this paper is to understand the importance of Appreciation in the field of Art and
Architectural pedagogy. After completed the Art and Design work we will not fulfilled until the people
appreciated the work. Appreciation plays the strong role in foundation of any Architectural Design
work. the students of second year B. Arch having this subject as a Elective B (Art Appreciation) and
they have learned the importance of appreciation through some case study and appreciate the work
on the basis of seven pillars of art appreciation through design.
The mean of the site visit and case study is to make student understand the visual literacy of art and
Design principles including appreciation of various art forms, but not limited to sculpture, painting
and architecture Aesthetic deals with the architectural design form and content. Basic techniques of
two and three dimensional form in design. The objective of this subject is that, students should able to
apply basic visual critical thinking and visual literacy techniques to art and object in everyday life.
They should be able to summarize the problems and concepts relevant to understanding and defining
art and Design. Students should be able to discuss the formal element and principles of design used in
a work of art and Architecture.

1. INRODUCTION
1.1Art and Design Appreciation
Art is a creative work of human which will come through his feeling, expression and imagination,
such as painting, sculpture, Architecture, photography etc.
Art appreciation is a very easy once you understand art history. If someone has made any art or design
and it is kept in a corner where no one can see it and not appreciates it, means its one kind of
disrespect of that art or design and if we appreciate it means get more value and importance.
The history of art is the history or any activity or product made by human in visual form for
aesthetical or communicative purposes which expressing ideas and emotions. In general a world wide.
Over time the art has been clssified in diverse ways, from the medival distance between liberal art and
mechanical art to the modern Art. The study of the history of art is a relatively recent phenomenon
prior to the renaissance, the modern concept of art did not exist over time,art historians have changed
their views about what is looking scrutiny.

1.2 Architectural Appreciation
The historical study of architecture by timelines in terms of different geographies, climates and cultures
which effect to architectural design. The study of conceptual design, components of architecture and
architectural construction in terms of the linkage between natural environment and humanity.
2. OBJECTIVES OF THIS SUBJECT
2.1. Students should be able to
 Apply the basic visual critical thinking and visual literacy techniques to art and objects in
everyday life.
 Summarize the problems and concepts relevant to understanding and defining art and Design.
 Discuss the formal elements and principles of design used in a work of art and Design.

3. METHODOLOGY
3.1 The Important Pillars of Art Appreciation through Design
Art and Design Appreciation is a
fundamental dimension of human life,
which intend emotion or ideas. The more
you appreciate and understand that art of
different eras, movement, style and
techniques. The better we can develop
evaluate and improve the design work. It
is the understanding the quality of great
art. It explains the role of the artist or
designer, visual thinking, observation and
artistic view. The seven art pillars of Art
Appreciation are shown in the figure.

3.2. Central Museum Nagpur (Site visit)
Central museum Nagpur was established by Britishers. This is one of the important and oldest museum
established in year 1863. Currently this museum is displayed for visitors, students, tourists and researchers
into many galleries throwinglights on various aspects of History, Art and Architecture etc.

Students observed the Art forms visually and studied the ancient painting, stone sculpture, art & craft
and Tribal Art and culture.

3.3. Buti Wada, Nagpur (Case Study)
This Wada belongs to Mr. KeshavraoButi. It is around 300 – 350 years old. The character and style of
the Wada is the fusion of modern and old architecture. Wooden touch in the Wada gives feel of
ancient architecture. Materials used are teak wood, bamboo, stone, bricks and cow dung etc. Student
appreciated the wada on major points like Aesthetic relationship with form, character & style and
function etc.

One side of the Wada was renovated 30 years before, which maintained the dignity of the wada as the
wooden frames furniture and ornament like Jali, lamp brackets etc the interior of the new construction
has been given a vision of modern as well as the ancient features of the wade because the wooden
structures was used in such a way that it was aesthetically sound as well as functional also. Pictures of
wada are given below.

4. CONCLUSION
Students learned how to appreciate the Architecture and Art on the basis of seven pillars of
appreciation -
1) Subject Matters
2) Form
3) Function
4) Era/Movement
5) Composition
6) Style / Character
7) Colour/Texture.
After this site visit/case study students learned the process of art and design appreciation, along with
the principles of art and Design. In such site visits, one finds that there was more interaction of the
students with the faculty and they will improve their visualization, observation and creative skills in
Art and Architecture.
