The Contributions Of Ernest Rutherford And The Gold Foil...
Ernest Rutherford was born in New Zealand and died in Britain, however during his life he worked
McGill University in Canada ( Ernest Rutherford Biographical , 2014). During Rutherford s life he
made significant contributions to Science; in 1998 when studying Uranium he discovered Alpha and
Beta radiation ( Ernest Rutherford: Father of nuclear science , n.d.). In 1903, Rutherford saw that a
French chemist, Paul Villard, had discovered a new type of radiation coming from radium, upon
discerning that this new radiation was different then the ones he had already discovered due to its
greater penetrating power, Rutherford named it Gamma radiation ( Ernest Rutherford , 2017). Using
his previously found out types of radiation, he discovered the concept of half life, how long it takes for
a sample of an element to decay to half its size. However, the most infamous experiment he did, was
the Gold Foil Experiment. In 1910, in order to confirm JJ Thomson s model on an atom Ernest
Rutherford conducted an experiment along with Hans Geiger and Ernest Marsden where a thin piece
of gold was bombarded with Alpha particles, while most went through (meaning that an atom is
mostly empty space), some were deflected, and a few even bounced backwards. This led to the
discovery of the neutron, a positively charged area of the atom which was responsible for Alpha
particles being deflected and bouncing back. With this new information disproving JJ Thomson s
model, Rutherford created a new atomic

The Organ Transplant Industry
Dagny Layman Mia Wall AP English C 23 May 2015 Tough Choices: Efficiency vs. Equity in the
Organ Transplant Industry Across the country, sick men, women, and children wait for new chances at
life: donor organs. A young woman, chest riddled with cancerous tumors, learns that in order to
survive she needs new heart within the next year. A grandfather, withered and jaundiced, slips slowly
into a coma as years of heavy drinking take their final toll. A tiny infant, born with underdeveloped
lungs, lies motionless in an oxygen rich, tank like crib as his mother holds his minuscule hand and
prays he will hang on just a little bit longer. Some patients wait for hours, months, or even years
before an organ becomes available and they are given a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Alcoholics wait hopelessly, knowing that due to the nature of their illness, they have slim chances of
getting new livers. After all, who would give a new organ to someone who destroyed his previous
one? And as these thousands of patients wait and hope, committees of medical professionals create
policies to regulate organ allocation, policies that give the gift of new life to some patients and destine
others to wait for chances that will never come. When medical professionals create organ allocation
policies, their main decision comes down to a simple question: should their policies place a higher
emphasis on equity or efficiency? Policies emphasizing efficiency primarily aim to avoid wasting
organs. Although the definition of waste varies, efficiency advocates discourage allocation to those
estimated to die soon, such as the elderly, or those who have caused their own disease. Pro equity
advocates tend to consider such judgments of value biased and unfair. Policies emphasizing equity are
concerned with fairness in the allocation process: assuring the criteria remain unbiased towards any
one group (e.g. race, sex, age, sexual orientation, etc.). Opening up the use of worth as a criterion
leaves room for human bias. Fortunately, the United Network for Organ Sharing continuously reviews
and modifies organ allocation policies within the United States. Within

The Character Of Naomi Nakane In Obasan, By Joy Kogawa
Naomi is always the good, silent child who does what s expected of her, she takes whatever is given to
her, for awhile without any complaints. In Joy Kogawa s novel, Obasan, the main character, Naomi
Nakane, chronicles her life with distance, and it is through minor character like her brother, Stephen,
and their actions that we see the depth and impact of Naomi s passive nature.
At the start of the book, Naomi describes herself as being a part of her mother, like a branch to a tree.
She often hides behind her mother and is completely silent. Stephen on the other hand, is the star
child; musically gifted from birth. With [his] practice time each night (Kogawa 62) Naomi was
constantly forced to listen to Stephen play his music, and as a child she would sit and watch him, but
not just him, it would be her father and mother, too. Everyone in Naomi s immediate family had some

had that could compete with her brother s intelligence and musical talent. And so this, along with other

Religion Is Not A Single Term
A term or more even a specific aspect in life, which is believed to be existent during the start of the
world and hopefully will never be extinct is, Religion. How, why and where exactly religion formed,
is a question that is universal, meaning many different religions have a variety of stories for these
answers. The true definition of religion cannot be stated in one sentence. It is more of a question based
an individual s belief toward his/her religion. However, the basic ideology of religion is the belief in
sacred objects such as Gods and supernatural beings. These beliefs are not just simply a belief. It is a
belief that gives faithful worshippers answers to a certain extent of the true meaning of the sentient
beings existence. There are a variety of different religions that exist in today s world, hence the reason
why Religion is not a single term. However, the following paper will only focus on Buddhist religion.
Buddhism is said to have existed for more than 2,500 years, which surrounds a variety of beliefs,
traditions and practices. All of which gives sentiment beings the true meaning and purpose of life.

The Context And Theory Of Corporate Governance
01 The context and theory of corporate governance 1.1 The meaning and purpose of corporate
governance Corporate governance broadly refers to the mechanisms, processes and relations by which
corporations are controlled and directed. Corporate governance has also been more narrowly defined
as a system of law and sound approaches by which corporations are directed and controlled focusing
on the internal and external corporate structures with the intention of monitoring the actions of
management and directors and thereby, mitigating agency risks which may stem from the misdeeds of
corporate officers. Governance structures and principles identify the distribution of rights and

1.3 The development of corporate governance and corporate governance theory Corporate governance
is a relatively new area and its development has been affected by theories from a number of
disciplines, including finance, economics, accounting, law, management, and organisational behavior.
Agency theory has probably affected the development of the corporate governance framework the
most. Agency theory identifies the agency relationship where one party, the principal, delegates work
to another party, the agent. In the context of a corporation, the owners are the principal and the
directors are the agent. In addition, there are other theories that have affected the development of
corporate governance, which include: transaction costs economics, stakeholder theory, and
stewardship theory. The development of corporate governance is a global occurrence and, as such, is a
complex area including legal, cultural, ownership, and other structural differences. Therefore, some
theories may be more appropriate and relevant to some countries than others. 1.4 Theories of
corporate governance There are a range of theories in corporate governance, such theories address the
cause and effect of variables.  Agency Identifies the agency relationship where one party, the

Cinematography Analysis Of Polanski s Chinatown
Cinematography Analysis in Chinatown
Chinatown is based on Roman Polanski s lifeworks. Polanski s goal is to emphasizes the meaning of
how cinematography is made, and how it inspires by understanding the concept of setting, lighting,
and how the image is captured. This film was released in 1974 by director of Roman Polanski to focus
on private investigator J.J. Gittes, played by Jack Nicholson to investigate the elements behind the
truth. Polanski s goal is to emphasize the audience to give an ominous feeling of the main character,
J.J. Gittes and his point of view by showing in color instead of black and white pictures. Due to these
reasons, Polanski wanted to use Panavision to give a flawed vision about the past, which the story is
set in the years of 1937. Polanski states, a traditional detective story with a new, modern shape for
Paramount picture. (1) This paper focuses on the film Chinatown which is neo noir, not only because
of the setting, but the concept of cinematography that connects duplicates occurrences together that
describe three categories: background of the cinematographer, point of view of the main character, and
the interpretation of the ending scenes.
First of all, Roman Polanski hired John A. Alonzo as the Director of Photography for Chinatown.
Therefore, Alonzo was well known for his notable works, as Director of Photography position after
Chinatown s successful film is Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Scarface, and Star Trek:

Truman s Vision Statement
When I enrolled at Truman State University, I did not realize how my race impacted me on both a
personal and global level. I believed we lived in a post racial society where race and ethnicity did not
matter. However, on Monday, November 24th, 2014, when officer Darren Wilson was not indicted for
the killing of Michael Brown, I experienced an epiphany. Race matters. Whether an individual
believes that race did or did not play a role in Michael Brown s death, race was reignited as a
prominent topic in America due to the Black Lives Matter movement. Roland Martin, the host of
News One Now, stated in an interview that The reason Black Lives Matter has been so successful is

Klyukovski, I pondered how my institution dealt with diversity. He proposed examining Truman s
vision statement to understand what the institution will do when issues of diversity arise. After
conducting some preliminary research on vision statements and generic criticism, I knew this is what I
wanted to study. I was ecstatic that I was able to add to the scholarly conversation centered on vision
statements within higher education. It was incredible learning how such a short statement served as a
reminder of where an organization wants to go. During the McNair program, I discovered a part of me
that I never knew existed, a researcher. I never thought of myself as that because I believed
researchers were naturally smart, which I was not. However, intelligence is not determined by grades
or GPA. It is about grit, which I gained by never being the victim of my circumstances. As mentioned
earlier, coming to terms with my racial identity definitely impacted my academics. While I was
enraged by Truman s aura, I realized I could not let that take away from my mental energy anymore.
With the arrival of my senior year, I channeled all that frustration in graduate applications and studies
because unless I did well in those two avenues, I would not be leaving Truman anytime soon. Now, I
have been accepted into five different Master Programs (as of 3/18) at the University of Texas San
Antonio, University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, University of Colorado Denver and Colorado Springs

Summary Of The Judgement Of Thamus By Neil Postman
In The Judgment of Thamus, Neil Postman (1992) discusses that any technology has two sided effects
and can indefinitely bring people some benefits or disadvantages. Technology is also one of the
indispensable elements in society. Postman (1992) supports his argument by analyzing the myths
about technology. Through the metaphor of Thamus, Postman (1992) states that it provides two
criteria for contemporary technology criticism technology always comes with a hidden cost and
people who create technology might not best judges of its value .
As a matter of fact, with the gradual development of science and technology, robots have been widely
used in people s work and life. On the one hand, robots have brought a mass of convenience to people.

the first commercial mobile phones made by Motorola were introduced to the market in 1983. These

The second generation (2G) network was digital, not analog and its development began in the late

Egypt counted on pre the revolution that have arisen in 2011. It started growing back post 2014 falling

only need to revive Egypt s past tourist flow but to increase it drastically to plug a huge deficit in
Egypt s GDP (Growth Domestic Product). To do so we need to look at the problem from outsider s
perspective. What makes Turkey and Dubai two of the top ten highest grossing touristic destinations

accounted to the level of security problems we had which led to massive decreases in arrivals and

Essay about Critical Response to the Turn of the Screw
Henry James novella the Turn of the Screw is a highly ambiguous piece of fiction. Set in Edwardian
England, a very naïve woman is left in charge of two young children. The beautiful Bly however
appears to be hiding a few dark secrets. The appearance of two ghosts plays on the governess mind,
she comes to the conclusion the children are in danger and being possessed by these two horrors.
Throughout the novella James successfully creates a mystical atmosphere, his ambiguous style forces
us to think twice about what is written and decide for ourselves whether or not this is purely a ghost
story or something far more sinister. However after several reads and a close look behind the words, it
becomes clear that the ghosts that haunt the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A woman as fanciful and dreamy as this in such a position is not going to survive.
As we continue to read this novella we must notice the governess wild and unnecessary use of
elaborate adjectives to describe the simplest of things. Her style of writing in itself is quite romantic
and poetic, full of metaphors and oxymorons. However sometimes her choice of words is so
prompting we must take a closer look into perhaps a double or triple meaning. When she first sights
the ghost of Peter Quint on top of the house she is able to describe his position with amazing precision
in note of the fact she was some distance from him and her sighting was quite brief. She comments he
stood at an angle, tall and erect... he fixed me with a hard gaze and when yet again she confides in Mrs
Grouse she gives a very elaborate description commenting on his tight red curls, pale face, long in
shape, small tiny whickers, darker arched eyebrows and the fact that he had no hat . The governess
even uses phrases such as the intercourse of our conversation added to the intensity of our meeting in
description of everyday things such as normal conversation. The governess certainly has deeper
meaning behind most of her words.
The last and most important point in regards to the governess repressed sexual desires is her highly
inappropriate and unprofessional behaviour with both her pupils, in particular Miles. There is a
constant underlying power struggle between the two. The

Integration Of Threat Intel And Incident Response. In Today’S
Integration of Threat Intel and Incident Response
In today s modern world of security threats, intelligence and the ability to respond to incidents are the
keys to survival. As technology continues to change and advance, we also must change our security
procedure and techniques. Dina Evans from LookingGlass has a good definition of threat intelligence,
We define threat intelligence as the combination of technical and contextual information regarding
existing or emerging threats from all available sources. It has been evaluated and analyzed for
accuracy, timeliness, and relevancy, and implemented among an organization s tactical, operational,

The challenges arise from the fact that when using multiple sources, it can be easy to miss the
connections between data points or to misunderstand the significance of noise when reviewing the
massive amount of data that must be crunched, cleansed and turned into useful intelligence.
The best way to address this issue is the use of a threat intelligence management platform. The threat
intelligence management platform filters, gathers and analyzes data, and then delivers it in a standard
format for inclusion in a variety of security systems and appliances (Comparing). Finally, it is
important to remember that the organizations budget will play a major role in the choice of selecting
threat intelligence services. The appropriate choice is to strive for consistency when interviewing
potential service providers.

The threat kill chain reveals the stages of a cyber attack from early reconnaissance to the goal of
information exfiltration. The kill chain can also be used as an organizational tool to help continuously
improve network defense (Kill Chain). Threats must progress through seven stages of the model; the
first stage is reconnaissance. Reconnaissance occurs when the attacker does a background check on
the target before attacking them. Most reconnaissance is accomplished with the help of the Internet
and social media accounts. The second stage is the weaponization phase. In this phase, the attacker

then we will look at the switches we will be using and then we will move onto the distribution and

By adding the equipment that we have already discussed we will have no problem in adding these
camera s in many key areas and could have some set up for redundancy as well to cover key areas. If
for some reason a access switch were to go down and alternate image from over lapping cameras can
be used. Sense the switches we chose use the PoE all the cameras can be supplied with power using
the IEEE 802.1af which is standard. To optimize performance we should add the flash memory card
with a 64Mb compact flash for each unit. I also think that we should consider Cisco SMARTnet
extended service agreement and around the clock global access to the Cisco Technical Assistance
Center (TAC). This will give us any help we may need with problems with equipment and setup.
For security on the network we will use the 802.1x this provide port security and provide port based
network access control as well as authenticated network access control. Using the 802.1x can increase
security by providing support for authentication, accounting, user identification and dynamic key
management. This level of security will also be able to set allow and deny network for connectivity
and also control VLAN access and many other traffic policies.

Sigmund Freud and Friedrich Nietzsche offer prominent critiques of civilization and morality that
greatly differ from the commonplace views of ethics and virtue. Rejecting the idea that morality is an

to the realities of the human existence. While both Nietzsche and Freud share this view, their views on
the value of morality differ greatly. Nietzsche argues that morality suffocates and chokes humanity.
Freud on the other hand, claims that morality is an essential component of civilization and solely
responsible for enabling humans to live together peacefully. The disparity between these two critiques
of morality is a product of the different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This will to power is the animalistic hunger for attaining more power. But it is explained by him that
there are those who cannot simply achieve that goal through force. So this will to power is eventually
turned inwards, where the deprivation and repression of the basic instincts is seen as having power
over them. This lifestyle is what Nietzsche describes as asceticism. A lifestyle of monks, priests and
nuns, he describes it as having an aura of seriousness. This process of forgetting common sense,
distrusting the instinct and withdrawing from the world is the same part of the same slaves revolt in
morality that he explains in his earlier essay. This ascetic ideal is further embodied in the then
flourishing world of science. He describes science as the most recent and noblest form of the ascetic
ideal (Nietzsche 3.25), adding that science is not opposed to religion or morality, it is aiming for truth.
His optimism about civilization s advancement towards the truth is a sharp contrast to the bound
discontent of Freud. Yet Nietzsche does have his own doubts about the faith in science. Similarly to
the scientist questions the priest s faith in God, Nietzsche recommends the conscience to doubt even
faith in truth. He is in no form a relativist, but he states emphasizes that knowing as many different

Women s Inequality In Honduras
Throughout history, women have been viewed as the inferior sex. Due to this, women have faced
discrimination all over the world. This has had many negative impacts on the lives women, one of
these being on their health. Poor health in women is often associated with domestic and sexual
violence, cultural and religious oppression, and lack of access to education, as well as many other
factors. One of the most delicate things that a woman can go through is pregnancy. Many women
around the world have to give birth without the assistance of a professional and die during childbirth
or during the 48 hour period after. Many of these deaths can be avoided if the appropriate measures
were to be taken. The Republic of Honduras believes that action must be taken to improve the health

plan on learning every single thing I can about my passion to make it and do what I need to do in

Chronic Blepharitis
Chronic blepharitis is a very common cause of ocular discomfort and irritation. The poor correlation
between symptoms and signs, uncertain aeitiology and mechanisms of the disease process all combine
to make management difficult. Anterior blepharitis affects the area surrounding the bases of the

Three Dream Theories
The three types of dream theories are the psychodynamic, activation synthesis, and neurocognitive
dream theories. Each are a little different and interpret dreams in a separate way. The psychodynamic
dream theory was made by Sigmund Freud and states that dreams are all about fulfilling wishes and
come from internal forces and conflicts. He believed that dreams contain symbols that represent what
someone may be aware of or may subconsciously want. On the other hand, he also thought that
dreams could also just be over everyday experiences. The activation synthesis hypothesis was made
by Allan Hobson and Robert McCarley and this hypothesis is much more based on biological body
functions. These two psychiatrists believed that during REM sleep brain centers are initiated but the
messages made by these centers are stopped and the body makes no movements. The brain still
receives these messages and tries to make sense of the random material by looking ... Show more

why people chose this theory, it was generally because of what their dreams have been about. Besides
the case of nightmares, almost everyone said that they dreamed about things that they have wished

We Shall Overcome Rhetorical Analysis
Martin Luther King Jr. once said that, Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be
demanded by the oppressed. During the time period (1850s) in which Frederick Douglass gave a
speech entitled The Hypocrisy of American Slavery, slavery was still a prominent feature of American
society, especially in the Southern States. Douglass, like many others, was an abolitionist, someone
who advocates the abolition or ending of something, such as slavery. Douglass s speech was intended
to shine a light on what he called the hypocritical practice of slavery within the United States of
America. Lyndon B. Johnson on the other hand, was the 36th president of the United States of

In We Shall Overcome, Johnson also employs pathos when he asserts ...we are met here tonight as
Americans not as Democrats or Republicans. We are met here as Americans to solve that problem. By
using restatement of the phrase we are met here as Americans, Johnson develops the literary device of
pathos by eliciting feelings of patriotism within his audience. The feelings of patriotism in turn call for
compassion based on equality from Johnson s audience. In addition, by saying the term American,
Johnson s audience would be able to realize the nature of the treatment of fellow Americans (African
Americans such as Martin Luther King Jr.) and possibly lead to change. Overall, the application of
pathos by Douglass and Johnson sparks emotions that can lead to societal transformations. Douglass
and Johnson use parallelism, which is the use of components in a sentence that are grammatically the
same, and they also use anaphora, which is the repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of
successive clauses, to further their arguments to affect change in their communities. For example, in
his speech, Douglass, when speaking about what African Americans do, states ...digging gold in
California, capturing the whale in the Pacific, feeding sheep and cattle on the hillside... which is
parallelism due to the structure of the phrase, beginning with a verb and leading

The Body vs. Stand by Me
Did you know that Stand by Me a academy award winning film directed by Rob Steiner was based of
a novel called The Body by Stephen King ? In fact in both the novel and film the plot is the same but
there are some small changes. The plot is about four twelve year olds who embark into a journey to
discover the body of Ray Brower. During their journey each boy learns something extraordinary about
themselves and about there friends. The main conflict in the novel is that there is another group of
older boys who are also searching for the body. The novel was released in 1982 and the film was

In the novel the setting of the story takes place in a small town named Castle Rock that is located in
Maine in the year 1960 and in the film the setting is Castle Rock, Oregon in 1959. This difference
would be considered a minor change because it is only one year apart from the original date in the
novel and the change of the state does not really matter. Adding to differences is that in the novel in
chapter seven there is a story that is told by Gordie called Stud City in the film it is not shown or
mentioned. This would be considered a major change because the story shows how smart and mature
Gordie is for a twelve year old and it is important for the build up of the character but it is excluded
from the film. Another difference is that in the novel when the boys find the body and they confront
the other boys Chris pulls the gun out to make them leave. In the film it is Gordie who takes out the
gun to make them leave. This is a major change because in the novel it helped make the ending make
more sense and helped Chris buildup as a character. In addition to differences in the novel when the
boys are on there journey they go into the pond to swim because they want to. In the film they go into
the pond because they have to in order to get across. This isn t considered a major change because it
doesn t affect the plot in any way. Something the filmmakers did well

Vocation In The Christian Worldview Of The Puritans
The pillars of constitutional liberty are self government, private property, representative government,
and limited government. Self government speaks of the individual who attributes common good to
society and does not harm society through selfish actions. Vocation in the Christian worldview
develops political liberty through the practice of self government (Samson, 1994). James Madison
thought that the larger the society...the more duly capable it will be to self govern (Madison, 1788).
The New England Puritans through practicality needed certain functions such as common defense to
be attended to thus, they created political covenants. These political covenants gave them the
opportunity for self government in these vocations and helped develop modern federalism providing
for unity and diversity to flourish (Samson S. A., 1993). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Social Status In Teenagers
Besides educational and socioeconomic status, race and ethnicity is a status that is incredibly
impactful in teenagers lives and it is singlehandedly the most influential social status in the lives of
teenagers today. Race and ethnicity determines what others think of a person on first sight. The way
our society is structured has created preconceived biases within all people against certain races. These
biases and prejudices are what cause the oppression of certain races. Similar to education and
socioeconomic status, race and ethnicity effects jobs people can obtain, the places they live, and how
people are treated. People of color have been long oppressed in the United States, when teenagers

Analysis Of Eric Erikson s Eight Stages Of Identity Theory
Introduction Identity or Self concept is something that evolves or matures right along with us; it
changes from physical concepts to more complex thoughts. (Damon Hart, 1988) Questions like Who
am I? and What is my Purpose? Have perplexed humanities greatest philosophers; the complexity of
these questions has even created a study of purpose; Teleology, the study of purpose. John Locke held
that personal identity is a matter of psychological continuity. He considered the self to be founded on
consciousness and not on the substance of either the soul or the body. (Nimbalkar, 2011) Eric Erikson

Adolescents who struggle to find a purpose to their lives and a separate identity from their parents

Failure to do so can result in long term feelings of isolation. 7. Generativity vs. Stagnation People who

Social networking is beneficial to teens, businesses, and colleges but in very different ways. Social

The Reform Movement Of Rural Canada During The Nineteenth...
The search for reform in rural Canada during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries reveals a deep
connection between educational movements and social reform. The readings for the first three weeks
of this course have provided an overview of how social reformers during this period were keen to
promote an urban and modern orientation to direct social reform movements in rural Canada. Often,
this perspective came into conflict with the needs of the rural society at the time. Therefore, the
widespread discontent within the rural society was illustrated through the various efforts of social
reform in Canada during the 1860s 1960s.
The first set of readings of this course outline the ways in which the hopes of the social reformers
were to promote reform based on an urban and modern orientation through movements in agriculture,
social welfare, and education. In doing so, the social reformers encouraged three kinds of
developments: i) the promotion of an urban orientation through the reform of agricultural education,
ii) the promotion reform through social legislation, and finally iii) the promotion of reform in rural
education to progressive systems of education. Although the reformers saw the promotion of
progressivism as a solution to the various problems within the rural society, the widespread discontent
from the rural society depicted the ways in which the needs of the urbanites and the rural society came
into conflict.
I will explore the ways in which the

The Music Industry Has Experienced A Difficult Period For...
Introduction: The music industry has experienced a difficult period for the past decade. since the
initial decline of Napster both record labels and artists have seen their revenues dwindling. As the
music industry has progressed vinyls were swapped for CD s and more recently on demand audio
streaming. Since its introduction, digital audio streaming has been regarded as the demise of the audio
industry by some artists and promoters, however, it is also perceived as the future of the industry as it
has shown promising growth over its relatively short existence. This is due to various positive and
negative factors that are entwined in the system, This factors being primarily overall revenue and
profitability of the method, as much as convenience for both consumers, promoters and artist. In order
to understand such debate, one must first assess the actual definition of music streaming, furthermore,
identifying its effects towards the music industry and what could be regarded as its life blood: Artist
income and average revenue. By definition streaming is the ability to listen to a record in real time

Video Game Culture Over The Youth Of The Nation
With the video game culture taking over the youth of the nation it s easy to forget where the beginning
of this colossal enterprise started. With the lack of video games in the past the original family games
started with classic board games resembling Monopoly and life. These timeless games gave birth to
their own culture that allowed players to become immersed in fantasy worlds. This included the
creation of games like Dungeons Dragons which would spawn its own generation of gamers. Recently
the popularity in these fantasy, and strategy based games has been growing. The reasons that is
drawing groups to participate in an archaic form of gaming is unclear. It s imperative to understand
why this subculture gaining in popularity, and how it s attracting people with the lure of mages and

some of the unspoken rules of the community, and how different groups of board gamers frequent the

the building was laid out. I decided to arrive to the gaming store on a Saturday at noon. I was hoping

  • 2. The Contributions Of Ernest Rutherford And The Gold Foil... Ernest Rutherford was born in New Zealand and died in Britain, however during his life he worked McGill University in Canada ( Ernest Rutherford Biographical , 2014). During Rutherford s life he made significant contributions to Science; in 1998 when studying Uranium he discovered Alpha and Beta radiation ( Ernest Rutherford: Father of nuclear science , n.d.). In 1903, Rutherford saw that a French chemist, Paul Villard, had discovered a new type of radiation coming from radium, upon discerning that this new radiation was different then the ones he had already discovered due to its greater penetrating power, Rutherford named it Gamma radiation ( Ernest Rutherford , 2017). Using his previously found out types of radiation, he discovered the concept of half life, how long it takes for a sample of an element to decay to half its size. However, the most infamous experiment he did, was the Gold Foil Experiment. In 1910, in order to confirm JJ Thomson s model on an atom Ernest Rutherford conducted an experiment along with Hans Geiger and Ernest Marsden where a thin piece of gold was bombarded with Alpha particles, while most went through (meaning that an atom is mostly empty space), some were deflected, and a few even bounced backwards. This led to the discovery of the neutron, a positively charged area of the atom which was responsible for Alpha particles being deflected and bouncing back. With this new information disproving JJ Thomson s model, Rutherford created a new atomic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Organ Transplant Industry Dagny Layman Mia Wall AP English C 23 May 2015 Tough Choices: Efficiency vs. Equity in the Organ Transplant Industry Across the country, sick men, women, and children wait for new chances at life: donor organs. A young woman, chest riddled with cancerous tumors, learns that in order to survive she needs new heart within the next year. A grandfather, withered and jaundiced, slips slowly into a coma as years of heavy drinking take their final toll. A tiny infant, born with underdeveloped lungs, lies motionless in an oxygen rich, tank like crib as his mother holds his minuscule hand and prays he will hang on just a little bit longer. Some patients wait for hours, months, or even years before an organ becomes available and they are given a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Alcoholics wait hopelessly, knowing that due to the nature of their illness, they have slim chances of getting new livers. After all, who would give a new organ to someone who destroyed his previous one? And as these thousands of patients wait and hope, committees of medical professionals create policies to regulate organ allocation, policies that give the gift of new life to some patients and destine others to wait for chances that will never come. When medical professionals create organ allocation policies, their main decision comes down to a simple question: should their policies place a higher emphasis on equity or efficiency? Policies emphasizing efficiency primarily aim to avoid wasting organs. Although the definition of waste varies, efficiency advocates discourage allocation to those estimated to die soon, such as the elderly, or those who have caused their own disease. Pro equity advocates tend to consider such judgments of value biased and unfair. Policies emphasizing equity are concerned with fairness in the allocation process: assuring the criteria remain unbiased towards any one group (e.g. race, sex, age, sexual orientation, etc.). Opening up the use of worth as a criterion leaves room for human bias. Fortunately, the United Network for Organ Sharing continuously reviews and modifies organ allocation policies within the United States. Within ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Character Of Naomi Nakane In Obasan, By Joy Kogawa Naomi is always the good, silent child who does what s expected of her, she takes whatever is given to her, for awhile without any complaints. In Joy Kogawa s novel, Obasan, the main character, Naomi Nakane, chronicles her life with distance, and it is through minor character like her brother, Stephen, and their actions that we see the depth and impact of Naomi s passive nature. At the start of the book, Naomi describes herself as being a part of her mother, like a branch to a tree. She often hides behind her mother and is completely silent. Stephen on the other hand, is the star child; musically gifted from birth. With [his] practice time each night (Kogawa 62) Naomi was constantly forced to listen to Stephen play his music, and as a child she would sit and watch him, but not just him, it would be her father and mother, too. • 27. Three Dream Theories The three types of dream theories are the psychodynamic, activation synthesis, and neurocognitive dream theories. Each are a little different and interpret dreams in a separate way. The psychodynamic dream theory was made by Sigmund Freud and states that dreams are all about fulfilling wishes and come from internal forces and conflicts. He believed that dreams contain symbols that represent what someone may be aware of or may subconsciously want. On the other hand, he also thought that dreams could also just be over everyday experiences. The activation synthesis hypothesis was made by Allan Hobson and Robert McCarley and this hypothesis is much more based on biological body functions. These two psychiatrists believed that during REM sleep brain centers are initiated but the messages made by these centers are stopped and the body makes no movements. The brain still receives these messages and tries to make sense of the random material by looking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I remember a lot of my dreams after they occur, and for the most part, my dreams are either about normal things that happen to me or things that I wish would happen. From the results of all the people I interviewed the most common theory that was believed was the neurocognitive theory. When I asked why people chose this theory, it was generally because of what their dreams have been about. Besides the case of nightmares, almost everyone said that they dreamed about things that they have wished about or hoped would happen to them someday. Quite a few people also chose the biological theory because they believed it sounded the most scientific and thought that s what truly happens inside the brain when dreaming occurs. Strangely, no one chose the psychodynamic theory; of the people who had an opinion on it, they said that they didn t agree with this theory because most of their dreams are not just ordinary emotions and ... • 28. We Shall Overcome Rhetorical Analysis Martin Luther King Jr. once said that, Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed. During the time period (1850s) in which Frederick Douglass gave a speech entitled The Hypocrisy of American Slavery, slavery was still a prominent feature of American society, especially in the Southern States. Douglass, like many others, was an abolitionist, someone who advocates the abolition or ending of something, such as slavery. Douglass s speech was intended to shine a light on what he called the hypocritical practice of slavery within the United States of America. Lyndon B. Johnson on the other hand, was the 36th president of the United States of America (1963 1969), and he served during a period in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In We Shall Overcome, Johnson also employs pathos when he asserts ...we are met here tonight as Americans not as Democrats or Republicans. We are met here as Americans to solve that problem. By using restatement of the phrase we are met here as Americans, Johnson develops the literary device of pathos by eliciting feelings of patriotism within his audience. The feelings of patriotism in turn call for compassion based on equality from Johnson s audience. In addition, by saying the term American, Johnson s audience would be able to realize the nature of the treatment of fellow Americans (African Americans such as Martin Luther King Jr.) and possibly lead to change. Overall, the application of pathos by Douglass and Johnson sparks emotions that can lead to societal transformations. Douglass and Johnson use parallelism, which is the use of components in a sentence that are grammatically the same, and they also use anaphora, which is the repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses, to further their arguments to affect change in their communities. For example, in his speech, Douglass, when speaking about what African Americans do, states ...digging gold in California, capturing the whale in the Pacific, feeding sheep and cattle on the hillside... which is parallelism due to the structure of the phrase, beginning with a verb and leading ... Compare And Contrast The Body Vs Stand By Stephen King James Chacha Mr St. John and Mrs. Herron English 10 03 April 2016 The Body vs. Stand by Me Did you know that Stand by Me a academy award winning film directed by Rob Steiner was based of a novel called The Body by Stephen King ? In fact in both the novel and film the plot is the same but there are some small changes. The plot is about four twelve year olds who embark into a journey to discover the body of Ray Brower. During their journey each boy learns something extraordinary about themselves and about there friends. The main conflict in the novel is that there is another group of older boys who are also searching for the body. The novel was released in 1982 and the film was released in 1986. In the novel the setting of the story takes place in a small town named Castle Rock that is located in Maine in the year 1960 and in the film the setting is Castle Rock, Oregon in 1959. This difference would be considered a minor change because it is only one year apart from the original date in the novel and the change of the state does not really matter. Adding to differences is that in the novel in chapter seven there is a story that is told by Gordie called Stud City in the film it is not shown or mentioned. This would be considered a major change because the story shows how smart and mature Gordie is for a twelve year old and it is important for the build up of the character but it is excluded from the film. Another difference is that in the novel when the boys find the body and they confront the other boys Chris pulls the gun out to make them leave. In the film it is Gordie who takes out the gun to make them leave. This is a major change because in the novel it helped make the ending make more sense and helped Chris buildup as a character. In addition to differences in the novel when the boys are on there journey they go into the pond to swim because they want to. In the film they go into the pond because they have to in order to get across. This isn t considered a major change because it doesn t affect the plot in any way. Self government speaks of the individual who attributes common good to society and does not harm society through selfish actions. • 36. The Reform Movement Of Rural Canada During The Nineteenth... The search for reform in rural Canada during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries reveals a deep connection between educational movements and social reform. The readings for the first three weeks of this course have provided an overview of how social reformers during this period were keen to promote an urban and modern orientation to direct social reform movements in rural Canada. Often, this perspective came into conflict with the needs of the rural society at the time. Therefore, the widespread discontent within the rural society was illustrated through the various efforts of social reform in Canada during the 1860s 1960s. The first set of readings of this course outline the ways in which the hopes of the social reformers were to promote reform based on an urban and modern orientation through movements in agriculture, social welfare, and education. In doing so, the social reformers encouraged three kinds of developments: i) the promotion of an urban orientation through the reform of agricultural education, ii) the promotion reform through social legislation, and finally iii) the promotion of reform in rural education to progressive systems of education. Since its introduction, digital audio streaming has been regarded as the demise of the audio industry by some artists and promoters, however, it is also perceived as the future of the industry as it has shown promising growth over its relatively short existence.
