Marie Curie was born, Maria Sklodowska on November 7, 1867. She grew up in Warsaw,
Poland. She would become famous for her research on radioactivity. Marie Curie was the first

for the discovery of Radium and Polonium. Her work not only influenced the development of
fundamental science, but also began a new era in medical research and treatment.

and Pierre Curie believed that perhaps the atom was covered with cosmic rays. Marie tested

that two uranium ores, pitchblende and chalcolite were much more radioactive that pure uranium.
Marie concluded that the highly radioactive nature of these ores may possibly be due to

birth country, Poland. Chemically, this new element was very similar to bismuth, but it contained

has changed, I interviewed my grandmother about the changes in her lifetime. Throughout her
life, she has witnessed many technological changes around the world. One change that has
occurred in her lifetime is the color TV. When she was born, color TVs existed, however, none
of the channels broadcasted in color. It was until she was in her 20s when stations began to

Teaching Nurses On Compassion Fatigue
While working in an emergency department (ED), nurses are expected to show compassion even
when they are exhausted? Over tired? Over worked? Fatigued? The purpose of this evidence based
practice (EBP) project was to educate ED nurses on compassion fatigue (CF) risk factors, causes,
and symptoms as well as assist them in its identification among each other and within themselves.
Further, the project sought to provide nurses with skills in order to prevent CF. A two hour
workshop consisting of a PowerPoint presentation was implemented in a busy emergency
department on the coast of NJ. Teaching nurses about compassion fatigueand ways in which to
alleviate and prevent it were stressed. Self regulation and self care practices were introduced using
interactive activities. Over the next four weeks, emails were sent reiterating self care and self
regulatory techniques. A Pretest posttest design used the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL)
measure to determine if burnout and secondary traumatic stress (both components of CF) and
compassion satisfaction improved from the workshop. A comparative means analysis showed a
decline in CF.

It is with great honour to share the tale of my struggle for independence growing up in a first

The fights and arguments that my parents had would rub off on the children making life very

happy causing them to file for a divorce. This was the hardest time in my life. When my parents
got the divorce I went from barely seeing my own father from working long hours to barely seeing
my own mother, who had to pick up full time work as a cashier. Eventually, my dad went to live
with his parents which resulting in me rarely seeing him. I knew I had to help out because my
mother was now single, taking care of three kids. My mom would work three jobs trying to pay for
lawyer fees for the divorce, pay bills, and take care of three young children. After seeing endless
days and nights of my mom crying over finances, I promised to her life was going to be different.
