Hearing is perceiving sound through the ear and happens automatically as one of the five senses. Listening, on the other hand, is a conscious choice that requires concentration to process meaning from words and leads to learning. While hearing only uses the ears, listening uses both ears and other senses as it is a physical and mental process. Effective listening can be interrupted by various barriers, both physical and psychological, whereas hearing cannot be avoided as easily.

-Mainly happens between two persons where
the percentage of concentration is more
-Sometimes it happens between one to many
where percentage of concentration is relatively
less

Active Listening
-Are the best listeners
-They patiently hear the person speak with
an open mind
-They are focused on the speaker
- Lesser chances of misunderstanding and
mis-interpreting ideas and words

Passive Listening
-Even if a person is listening, he is not able to
pay attention as his concentration has drifted
away to his thoughts.
-Passive listeners hear the words, but do not
absorb the meaning and provide vague
feedback.

-Hearing cannot be avoided, even if we are inside a
room. Our ear may keep receiving different sounds
like birds chirping, the beep of the a vehicle, etc.
-Listening can be interrupted by thoughts and many
other factors like physical, psychological and
physiological barriers
