• Oil and gas fulfil the crucial energy requirements
of society. It will be not be possible to visualize the
world without the petroleum and other related
products
• The transport sector is heavily dependent of the
petroleum products
• Petroleum is the primary material for a multitude
of chemical products, including pharmaceuticals,
fertilizers, solvents and plastics
• Petroleum is therefore integral to many industries,
and is of critical importance to many nations as
the foundation of their industries

• Considered to be the biggest sector in the world
in terms of dollar value
• Oil and gas industry is a global powerhouse
employing hundreds of thousands of workers
worldwide as well as generating hundreds of
billions of dollars globally each year
• 30 billions barrels are consumed globally each year
• Total world proved oil reserves reached 1687.9
billion barrels at the end of 2013, sufficient to
meet 53.3 years of global production
• Thus the proper management of oil & resources
are crucial

6. The oil and gas industry can be broken down into two key
areas:
1- The Upstream component is also refereed to as the
E&P (exploration and exploration). This involves search for
underwater and underground natural gas fields or crude
oil fields and the drilling of exploration wells and drilling
into established wells to recover oil and gas
2- Downstream component refers to the filtering of the
raw materials obtained during the upstream phase. This
means refining crude oil and purifying natural gas. The
marketing and commercial distribution of these products
to consumers and end users in a number of forms
including: natural gas, diesel oil, petrol, gasoline,
lubricants, kerosene, jet fuel, asphalt, heating oil, LPG
(liquefied petroleum gas) as well as a number of other
types of petrochemicals 6

Warehouse component, giving employees
throughout the organization access to critical facts
and figures
• NetWeaver BI integrates data from across the
enterprise and beyond
• This BI & A solution comprised state-of-the-art SAP
software and high-performance servers from
leading hardware vendors
• In the past, NetWeaver BI by SAP had been
predominantly leveraged by managers from
various regions and at company headquarters

10. • But BPCL discovered that middle management
and sales staff could also benefit from having
timely access to key performance indicators
• BPCL increased the number of user licenses from
200 to 600 and demonstrated the power of
NetWeaver BI in various business contexts
• Using the insight gained by using NetWeaver BI,
sales force developed strategies to increase
membership in the loyalty programs
• This move has helped dramatically increase the
business generated by the card schemes
• In fact, at least 30 percent of the growth can be
attributed to NetWeaver BI

12. • Royal Dutch Shell is one of the largest oil and gas
companies, the world’s fourth largest company by
revenue
• For some time now it has been developing the
idea of the “data-driven oilfield” in an attempt to
bring down the cost of drilling for oil – the
industry’s major expense
• Surveying of potential sites involves monitoring
the low frequency seismic waves that move
through the earth below us due to tectonic activity
• Probes are put into the earth at the spot being
surveyed, which will register if the pattern of the
waves is distorted as they pass through oil or gas

13. • In the past this would involve taking a few
thousand readings during the typical survey of a
potential drilling site
• Technology has advanced to the level where it
could involve more than a million – vastly
increasing the amount of data gathered during
exploration
• Shell uses fibre optic cables, created in a special
partnership with Hewlett-Packard, for these
sensors, and data is transferred to its private
servers, maintained by Amazon Web Services

14. • This gives a far more accurate image of what lies
beneath
• Data from any prospective oil field can then be
compared alongside that from thousands of others
around the world using BI tools, to enable
geologists to make more accurate
recommendations about where to drill
• Thus use of BI & A tools helps oil companies drill
and the best location where they can find oil

16. • ClearPeaks is a leading provider of BI tools. It
delivered a ground breaking project with UAE gas
processing giant, Abu Dhabi Gas Industries Ltd
(Gasco)
• Gasco had all this data but they did not have a
single, consolidated view of that data, particularly
for the management
• There was a plethora of reports from many
different systems. Some came from Excel sheets,
which people have to spend all day trawling
through to extract the pertinent data, some came
from other programmes

17. • Gasco has producing assets at five separate
locations: Habshan, Ruwais, Bab, Asab and
Buhasa. The initial challenge was as how to
consolidate all of this data. They had to take data
from a total of six consolidated Enterprise
Resource Planning (ERP) systems
• ClearPeaks designed a suite of dashboards that
provided Gasco with easy access to its data,
allowing it to analyse and optimise its operations
in incredible detail
• This gave Gasco a single and unified view of all its
data and helped them improved their operational

19. • Petro-Canada is one of the largest integrated oil
and gas companies in Canada
• It selected WebFOCUS as its enterprise BI standard
for reporting and information delivery
• In its on-going efforts to improve the efficiency of
its information technology, Petro-Canada was
looking for a standard reporting tool that could be
used across the corporation
• Due to the growth and internationalization of its
business, it was also looking for a reporting tool
that could extract data from multiple systems to
produce a consolidated corporate financial view

20. • Petro-Canada utilized WebFOCUS to develop their
enterprise reporting system (ERS), a solution for
consolidated financial reporting, and to provide for
the analysis of financial and operating data for
Petro-Canada's financial managers
• ERS, having extracted data from multiple systems
to produce a consolidated corporate financial view,
is the primary source for gathering corporate
financial and operational information and
providing predefined and ad hoc reporting

22. • Hunt Petroleum Corporation is an international oil
and gas exploration and production company
• Hunt Petroleum conducts drilling operations and
labor-intensive searches for underground oil deposits
that can often prove inconclusive
• As the company continued to grow in size, and with
data stored in multiple database systems, it became
critically important to bring in a BI solution that could
pull data from all sources and integrate the results
within BI reports
• Generating monthly AFE (authorization for
expenditure) reports was a 16-hour, multi-day, activity
due to the need to pull data from so many different
sources and then proceed with an Excel-based analysis

that is in both upstream and downstream sectors,
from searching the crude oil to its refining and
