Various Rocket Propellants and Their Characterstics
Rocket
A rocket is a missile, spacecraft, aircraft or other vehicle which obtains thrust from a rocket engine. In
all rockets, the exhaust is formed entirely from propellants carried within the rocket before use.[1]
Rocket engines work by action and reaction. Rocket engines push rockets forwards simply by
throwing their exhaust backwards extremely fast.
Rockets for military and recreational uses date back to at least 13th century China.[2] Significant
scientific, interplanetary and industrial use did not occur until the 20th century, when rocketry was the
enabling technology of the Space Age, including setting foot on the moon.
Rockets are used for fireworks, weaponry, ejection seats, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rocket propellant
Rocket propellant is mass that is stored in some form of propellant tank, prior to being used as the
propulsive mass that is ejected from a rocket engine in the form of a fluid jet to produce thrust. A fuel
propellant is often burned with an oxidizer propellant to produce large volumes of very hot gas. These
gases expand and push on a nozzle, which accelerates them until they rush out of the back of the
rocket at extremely high speed, making thrust. Sometimes the propellant is not burned, but can be
externally heated for more performance. For smaller attitude control thrusters, a compressed gas
escapes the spacecraft through a propelling nozzle.
Chemical rocket propellants are most commonly used, which undergo exothermic chemical reactions
to produce hot gas used by a rocket for propulsive purposes.
In ion propulsion, the propellant is made of electrically charged atoms (ions), which are
electromagnetically pushed out of the back of the spacecraft. Magnetically accelerated ion drives are
not usually considered to be rockets however, but a similar class of thrusters use electrical heating and
magnetic nozzles.
Chemical propellants
There are three main types of propellants: solid, liquid, and hybrid.
Solid propellants

William Shakespeare s Vampire Bat
Final Assignment Part 2 by Brandy Mearnic
Vampire Bat
The vampire bat also comes from a Subfamily called desmodontinae. There are three different types of
bat species: The common vampire bat, hairy legged vampire bat and white winged vampire bat. These
three different species are mostly native to the New World, but can be found in parts of Mexico and
Brazil, Chile and Argentina.
Their main source of food is blood. Instead of sucking the blood to feed on they make a small cut with
their teeth and then lick up the blood from the fresh wound. While feeding, they can feed for up to 30
minutes without waking the animal they are feeding on up.
They have a short muzzle and instead of a nose leaf, they have exposed (or naked) pads with u shaped
grooves at the tip of the nose. The common vampire bat has thermoreceptors that help the bat to locate
areas where the blood flows close in it s prey. Vampire bats have small ears and very short tail. The
front teeth of a vampire bat are designed for cutting and the back teeth are smaller than other bats. A
bat s brain processes sound and can detect breathing sounds of other animals sleeping. This part of the
brain is called the inferior colliculus. Mostly all bats have lost the ability to walk on the ground, but
there are some that still run while on the ground. Their wings are much more powerful than their legs,
though.
Bats live in colonies is complete, dark places such as caves, wells, trees and some buildings. The

Assumption of Risk
In the Dillworth v. Gambardella, 776 F. Supp. 170 (D. Vt. 1991) is a case where the
Plaintiff sues a skier that feel and thereby knocking down the plaintiff who feel and injured his back.
The jury came back with a defendant verdict and the plaintiff files a motion for a new trial on the
grounds that the court made an error in instructing the jury as to the Vermont Sports
Injury Statute and its relation to the doctrine of assumption of risk and the applications to this case.
The appellate court denied their motion for a new trial and stated that the sports injury statute applied
to participants in any sport. The Assumption of Risk doctrine states that

This inheritance of assumptions of risk and if the action is applicable to the case is a question of fact
for the jury, and therefore the jury in this matter found it applicable, which was not thereby applicable
for a new trial.
The jury in the Dillworth matter applied the assumption of risks to all participants in sports, not just
the operators of ski resort. In regards to dangerous activities and sports in general the court stated that
when a primary assumption of the risk exists there is no liability to the plaintiff because there is no
negligence on the part of the defendant to begin with; the danger to the plaintiff is not one which the
defendant is required to extinguish or warn about. Having no duty to begin with, there is no breach of
duty to constitute negligence, showing that even other participants not just those in charge of the
activity can not be negligent for risks that are inherent to the activity. This assumption of risk has a
broader appeal than just skiing and was stated that A person who takes part in any sport, including
skiing, accepts as a

The Water Supply For Caracas Flow From 2 Major National Parks
Based on the country s population, there s a large percentage of people living in the big cities which
has the greatest water availability . Cities usually use, reservoirs to sub sustain their population.
Caracas gets their water supplies from these reservoirs: Camatagua, La Mariposa, La Pereza, Taguaza,
Taguacita, Lagartijo, Quebrada Seca, Macaroa river, and Cuira (Gonzalez 2015). Most of these water
supply for Caracas flow from 2 major national parks. The water supply is limited because of the
amount of people living in the capital. What attracts people are the abundance of water but then there
are issues of when the water supplies run out. Venezuela as a country is prone to droughts even with
Caracas being in the tropical regions of Venezuela. The important surface body of water is the
Macaroa which is an important watershed to the city. Some of these water supplies come from the El
Avila national park as does from the Macaroa national park. The majority of them are surface bodies
of water but flow within the underground watershed to conserve the water supply during the drought.
It is understandable that, Of all the drinking water consumed in the city of Caracas, over eighty
percent comes from the Tuy I, Tuy II and Tuy III aqueducts, which are fed from the watershed basins
of the Tuy and Camatagua rivers. These basins have been undermined in recent years by long
droughts, combined with short rainy seasons and a greater demand for

Why Is College So Expensive If Students Are Paid So Little...
A Response to Michelle Chen A teacher has one of the most difficult and highest demanding jobs in
society. They are responsible for educating the future and giving their students the best chance to
succeed. However, many teachers and professors are not paid nearly as much as the demands placed
on them should indicate. Michelle Chen, in her piece from The Nation titled, Why Is College So
Expensive if Professors Are Paid So Little?, attempts to analyze the current issues with professors
wages in college and provide possible solutions. Although Chen presents some solid ideas, her work
suffers from her failure to address why college is so expensive, her inability to provide more than one
solution, and her overreliance on emotional aspects of the conflict. In her essay, Chen states a few
problems that can hardly be argued with: college is far too expensive and professors are paid much too
little. She focuses mostly on adjuncts, or part time professors, as it is in this area that many of the
problems reside. She writes, With student debt and tuitions both ballooning across the country, a
college degree is in many ways more expensive or overvalued today than ever. Unfortunately, she fails
to provide in depth analysis on why college is so costly to begin with. It is because of this shortcoming
that Chen s work is much weaker as a whole. Firstly, her title becomes misleading, and makes her a
possibly untrustworthy source. Secondly, her failure to acknowledge the reasons why college is so
expensive cuts off an entire possibility of solutions. Addressing where all this money is being spent
could provide an easier and stronger solution than the one Chen provides. When discussing a topic
such as this, there are an abundance of possible solutions that are worth taking a look at. Michelle
Chen, however, only decides to closely examine one: unionization of faculty. She says, [Layfield]
hopes that organizing with her union for a fair contract can ensure future generations of faculty will
face a richer career horizon. While unionization is certainly not a bad idea, Chen puts too much focus
on this one solution. She fails to even acknowledge other possible solutions, such as making cuts in
administrative budgets

Orphan Drug Market Development And Manufacturing Of Products
Sanofi Genzyme is a branch of the Sanofi Corporation that specializes in the development and
manufacturing of products to treat a variety of rare diseases. The Allston Landing Facility (ALF)
currently produces a single enzyme replacement therapy which treats patients with Type 1 Gaucher
disease. This treatment falls within the classification of an Orphan drug which is a drug or biologic
that treats a patient population of less than 200,000 within the United States. There is an entire
segment of the pharmaceutical industry comprised of companies that develop and manufacture
treatments for rare diseases. The Orphan Drug market has a projected Worldwide 2020 sales forecast

In addition, once a patient begins a treatment that improves their condition there is a low likelihood
that the patient will stop that treatment. Also, the low success rate of drugs from development through
FDA approval decreases the chance that a competitor will develop an alternative treatment.
The bargaining power of the customers within the Orphan Drug patient population is classified as
medium/low. While patients are price sensitive; the cost of treatment for most is subsidized by either
health insurance or government funding and therefore the price of these treatments are typically very
high. The average per patient on an orphan drug in the year of 2014 was calculated to be over
$110,0001. While the average cost is currently high, this has become and increased area of scrutiny
worldwide and many governments are enacting price control within the industry, eating away at
potential profits.
Once a company has successfully developed an orphan drug and gained FDA approval, the process to
build and operate a manufacturing facility can be extremely costly. This is driven by the fact that the
bargaining power of the supplies is medium/high. This classification is because of the extreme
regulations that exist for not only the equipment, but also the raw materials used within the drug
manufacturing process. The environment causes companies to create stringent supplier

Theory of Democratic Peace
Jestin Thompson
Political Science
23 April 2013
Final Paper
Theory of Democratic Peace The idea of democratic peace was brought up in the enlightened era. The
theory of democratic peace was based off of Immanuel Kant s Perpetual Peace. The theory of
democratic peace argues that nation states governed by democratic regimes do not tend to have
conflicts with other countries that would lead to wars. With this theory, it shows that nation states with
a democratic rule are more likely to not go to war with other countries. In some cases, this theory has
been proven to be true, but in other cases it has not, especially with the United States. There are many
proponents and opponents for this theory. Through this essay, the theory ... Show more content on

This is a way that the theorists distort the definition of war, so it portrays democratic states as peaceful
nations, who don t go to war with each other. In fact, it s the opposite because the democratic nations
do fight each other, but based off the criteria of having a thousand deaths they never had a war with
each other. Last, the democratic nations recognizing each other as democratic nations. With this
recognition, it is used as a standard to determine whether democratic states fight each other. Without
the mutual recognition, there is no proof that democracies fight each other. In order to be recognized
as a democratic state, many of the states that claim to be democratic have to fit the liberal principles.
Opposing views of the democratic peace theory believe as times go on this theory will continued to be
distorted to fit the different circumstances that are to come in the future.
Further in this essay, three different countries with different governing styles will be used to test the
theory of democratic peace s accuracy or falseness. For the democratic rule, the country is South
Africa. Using Russia as the authoritarian rule, and China as the totalitarian rule. By using these
countries, it shows if the democratic peace theory applies to other governing styles.
Although South Africa is now a democratic rule, it did not start off with this rule.

Downtown Vancouver
Downtown Vancouver is a significantly diverse city, with smaller neighborhoods within reflecting
historical background and projecting how the world has influenced our city. In this assignment, I will
compare and contrast my experiences in the different areas of downtown Vancouver, as well as discuss
the knowledge I gained from this field trip. I started my tour at Waterfront Station by taking the
SeaBus, a ferry connecting the city centre with North Vancouver. Being in the Vancouver Harbour,
you get to see first hand how important global trade is for our economy, and how active the Vancouver
port is. While on the SeaBus, there are massive cargo ships with hundreds of crates stacked upon each
other, towering over the small ferry. According to an information sign, Vancouver is Canada s largest
port, and one of the busiest in all of North America. I had the chance to see a freighter with Italy
labeled on it in large bold letters along with the Italian flag, which was very intriguing. It is
remarkable to know that ships from all around the world sail in and out of our port daily, likewise

could not be too old as it also was a glass high rise (like many modern buildings today). I was shocked
to learn that the current standing building was completed in 2009, yet it blended it very well with the

On The Rainy River Character Analysis
Life can bring unexpected events that individuals might not be prepared to confront. This was the case
in the short story On The Rainy River written by Tim O Brien. Young Tim is drafted to the military to
fight the American War in Vietnam. He faces the conflict of whether he should or should not go to war
after being drafted. The thought of giving up the future he has worked so hard for and instead fight a
war for uncertain reasons terrifies him. He must make the agonizing decision of whether to pursue his
personal desire and in turn be shamed by society or conform, sacrificing his ideals in the process.
Through the initial characterization of young Tim, O Brien suggests that when faced with unexpected
life changing dilemmas people will more often than naught end up clouded judgement and panic.
Young Tim is ambitious and well educated, he is on his way to Harvard University on a scholarship.
His life is heading in the best direction possible. This is until he receives the draft letter. His ideals
hurtling down a huge black funnel and all he can do is nothing ...wait. His helpless soon becomes
rage, rage towards the government who s motives for the war were shrouded in uncertainty . He is too
good for this war. Too smart, too compassionate, too everything. Why don t they draft some back to
the stone age hawk? Why must he, who doesn t support this uncertain war put [his] own precious
fluids on the line. As the rage in [his] stomach burned down he soon

Early Nuclear Physics Essay
1 Introduction
1.1 A Brief History of Early Nuclear Physics
In the early 1900s it was seen that a small number of alpha particles were deflected by a large angle,
the current model at the time predicted only small deflections of the particles. These results were
explained by introducing a tiny positively charged nucleus into our picture of the atom. Although beta
decay had been observed as early as 1896 and was known to contain electrons, it wasn t until 1914
that they would break the law of energy conservation if just composed of electrons. To account for the
discrepancy in energy during beta decay, Wolfgang Pauli suggested that a very light, neutral charged
particle was also released during beta decay, this particle was named the ... Show more content on

There are numerous models that have been used to describe nuclear structure and the physical
properties that arise. A mathematical model can be scrutinised in a large number of ways, does the
model agree with existing data, can the model be used to make physical predictions, what assumptions
are made etc.. Currently a large factor used in deciding whether to use a model, is the dif ficulty in
solving this mathematical model to produce physical values. A much more complicated model may
give the most accurate results, but the difficulty in obtaining any result e.g. the computational time
required, is not worth the gain in accuracy. A trade off must be made in deciding on the physical
model to be used in the situation. In this article a number of different models will be discussed, the
formulation and the uses of these models will be studied, as well as there uses in physics. Due to the
vast number of areas that nuclear physics is used, such as in cancer treatments, material processing
etc. improvements in our nuclear models are very important and not just studied for scientific
curiosity. [3]

There are certain professions in this world that everyday people could not fathom working in. This

the individuals in these stories are conflicted with reaching a resolution to these fears. Working or

The Importance Of Censorship In College Education
The United States, the land of the free, prides itself in the rights given to its people. Despite the
acclaimed freedom of America, Americans, especially college students, are not as free as the founding
fathers would have hoped. When the First Amendment was adopted on December 15, 1791,
Americans were given the Freedom of Religion, Speech, the Press, Assembly, and Petition. While the
Constitution clearly grants these rights to all U.S. citizens, individuals still fight for these freedoms.
Specifically, the Freedom of Speech is an ongoing issue which people continue to pursue. This
freedom is essential to student growth in higher education, yet college students are often limited by
what they can say while on campus. The censorship of individual and group speech threatens the
purpose of a liberal education. It also limits the freedoms of a free society.
Students should be encouraged to voice their individual feelings and views on worldly issues, instead
of being shunned and threatened for doing so. The purpose of a liberal education is to not only to
educate individuals but also to introduce them to the different cultures and beliefs of the students they
sit beside during class. Exposure to the views of others allows students to expand their own
knowledge on current issues, individual rights, cultural differences, and more. An important part of
one s education is to grow spiritually, individually, and culturally, as well as intellectually. One must
note that the experiences

the way in which they were founded and then funded and in the collections of art that they house. I

they were also similar in some aspects. Historically, the Frick Collection was a private collection by

you, which also portrays the value of each of those paintings because of the way they were placed to
be seen. (2) Both museums are situated in wealthy areas of New York City and thus indicate that there
may be an association between the grandeur of museums and wealth or sophistication. Another aspect
that I found to be very interesting was the way in which each of the museums offered different
multimedia formats to facilitate the visitor s experience with the artwork in display. I noticed that both
museums offered applications for smartphones and tablets, free of charge, to assist the visitors with
getting the most possible out of the museum. Visiting a museum can be a very distracting task because
there is so much to see and without a plan or a navigating system that helps you make your way

Online Shopping And Traditional Shopping
Shopping can be enjoyable for some people; however, it can also be a burden for others. The
preference of the shopper really determines whether or not they have a pleasant experience and the
time to look for their items. There are many similarities as well as differences with online shopping
and traditional shopping. The main factors that I will be discussing are convenience, discounts and
item availability.
Convenience is really a significant factor with both types of shopping. As of the 2011 Time Survey,
the average American spends about 43.2 minutes per day shopping, which is down from 48.6 minutes
per day in 2003. (Hines, 2012) Online shopping is convenient for purchasing items at the click of the

Both shopping methods offer convenience in different ways that is solely at the preference of the
individual consumer.
Discounts are offered by both online and traditional shopping. Cyber Monday is vastly becoming as
popular as Black Friday, and for some, more popular. The world of retail has certainly raised their
game with regard to discounts and sales on merchandise, both online and traditional, to attract
customers. Retail centers will offer discounts to a certain number of customers first to arrive. Many
online sellers will offer free shipping in addition to sales and discounts to compete. A consumer can
save a considerable amount of money by researching an item they want to purchase to obtain the best
deal. In addition, online sellers feature lower prices because they do not have the overhead costs such
as rent, utilities and sales people. In comparison, retail centers will slash prices to compete against
online retailers. Another savings with online shopping is that a consumer might not have to pay sales
tax based on their residency. (Torres, 2017) Coupons and gift cards can be applied with either method
of shopping allowing further discounts off regular priced items.
Item availability is significant for online shopping. There is no shortage of shelf space when you shop
online. Another factor to consider is when a consumer is looking for an old or unique item, they can
just google it and purchase it. As such, a consumer spends less time

Social Media Influence On Political Leaders
Monica Gautam Sherry Sharifian GOVT 2306 73011 March 30, 2017 In my view web based social

Social media is a term used to depict the association between gatherings or people in which they

Plato s Idea of the Emergence of Tyranny from Democracy Essay
What are tyrants, one might ask. In the current sense of the word a tyrant is pejorative term, applied to
an individual in power who is selfish and self preserving. A tyrant is an immoral being, ruling over
those around him through force, a tax on the freedom of those he subjugates. Yet the question that one
should be asking is where do tyrants come from? Plato proposed that tyrants are a product of
democracy, that the liberty inherent to a democracy allows the self interested to manipulate the
system(generally through appealing to the population at large) causing a system with little liberty. This
paper aims to defend the claims of Plato concerning tyranny, particularly the origins of tyrants, as well
as to propose the safeguards that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Plato states that the ones who are by nature most orderly generally become the wealthiest ( The
Republic Book VIII 564e). Tyrants emerge where the drones manipulate the masses into despising the
prosperous. Regardless of what someone believes causes certain individuals in a society to become
wealthy and prosperous, it very hard to deny that the prosperous class does not provoke envy on the
part of the non prosperous. This is where the large uninterested portion of a democratic population
make it possible for tyrants to emerge. Both parties (the prosperous and non prosperous alike) select
and support drones that defend their interests, as one group is busy procuring wealth, the other
uninterested in pursuing political debate. The most successful of these drone are those that defend the
interests of those they support the best, generally by victimizing members of the opposite camps and
defending their own against the victimization of others. They gain power and prestige to the point that
they can be called popular leaders.
Tyrants evolve from popular leaders because they are able to victimize and scapegoat members of
opposing camps with the support of the masses. The masses benefit from supporting their leader as
he/she continues to defend their interests, and generally the loss of the victims

Character Analysis Of The Pit And The Pendulum
The Pit and the Pendulum Character Analysis Essay Edgar Allen Poe s The Pit and the Pendulum uses
horror and suspicion to build up not only the storyline, but the persona of the narrator in which is also
the prisoner. The characteristics of the prisoner ties within the story to create trippy feelings of fear
and unassertiveness of whether or not he is truly safe. From the trials that the prisoner has faced, his
characteristic of resourcefulness, pessimistic, and terror are revealed and play a salient part of his slick
escape. The prisoner exemplifies resourcefulness which is shown through his actions of survival.
Despite his unstableness, he still manages to remain clever in such a frightening situation. Poe asserts
that the prisoner is resourceful considering he uses the hem of his robe to plot out his area: I tore a part
of the hem from the robe, and placed the fragment at full length, and at right angles to the wall. In
groping my way around the prison, I could not fail to encounter this rag upon completing the circuit.
(Poe 3). Being that he uses his resources to find his way around the tomb, he learns that he is among a
treacherous pit which could mean death. This action alters the whole course of the story due to the
possibility of the prisoner falling into the pit. The prisoner continues to show signs of resourcefulness
in the toughest situations: Observing that I remained without motion, one or two of the boldest leaped
upon the frame work and smelt at the surcingle. This seemed the signal for a general rush. Forth from
the well they hurried in fresh troops. They clung to the wood, they overran it, and leaped in hundreds
upon my person. (Poe 8). Using the rats as a pathway to his freedom from the pendulum, his quick
thinking saved his life. With that being said, the prisoner uses his traits of resourcefulness to escape
without letting fear block his tactics. Poe reveals the prisoners aspect of showing pessimistic traits
through his thoughts of seeing the worst outcome of events. The prisoner states, It was not that I
feared to look upon things horrible, but that I grew aghast lest there should be NOTHING to see. At
length, with a wild desperation at heart, I quickly unclosed my

Direct Democracy Vs. Representative Democracy
Democracy is a system of government in which the utmost influence is consigned in the individuals
and implemented directly by them or by their designated representatives under a free voting
arrangement. According to my research direct democracy also known as pure democracy is when all
the individuals come together and make decisions by voting. They are the one who decide the
regulation and guidelines through which the people will oversee. In contrast a representative
democracy is when the population designate leaders who makes judgements on their behalf. There are
many differences between a direct and a representative democracy and some of them are that in a
direct democracy the public have authority and are responsible for decision making

Edith was with her family in England but had to move back to Belgium where she joined the Red
Cross. As part of the German Schlieffen plan, the Germans invaded Belgium and Brussels was under
very strict German rule. Many of the British soldiers were stuck, sick or lost from the allied forces.
Edith Cavell then decided to aide the men and get them back on their feet. She hid them in the hospital
safe houses around Belgium so they weren t found. Around 200 British servicemen were able to
escape back to Holland which remained neutral during the war. Edith continued to help nurse the
wounds of the German and British soldiers. The Germans did not know that Cavell was nursing the
British so she remained safe. The Germans had let out a strict warning that if anyone helped the allied
side there would be punishments. In the mid 1915 s Edith Cavell had come under suspicion for
helping allied servicemen to escape. The month of August 1915, Edith Cavell was arrested and she

Analysis Of David Orr s The Principle Of Mastering Oneself
An important point in which David Orr goes into considerable detail about is his six principles to
rethink education. First, he ensures that all education is environmental education by every mean. In
western education particularly, students are more often taught that they are apart of taught that they are
apart from the natural world, or above it if you will. Leesa Fawcett enforces this idea on page 107 by
stating:
We have been taught to measure, manage, exploit the environment, to make money off of it on the
back s of others near and far. We ve been encouraged to ignore it, to stay out of its messy dirty places.
To ignore it is to ignore ourselves, our bodies, our forces and our relationships
Fawcett implies that undeniably students are being taught that education is the way to success and
success means exploiting the environment and ignoring the importance of sustainability. Next Orr uses
the Greek term, Paideia to formulate his principle of mastering oneself is the goal of education and
subjects are the tools of doing so (Orr, 2004, pg. 9). The current education system looks at specializing
in one particular subject, and being really knowledgeable in that subject alone is what education
strives for. However, one simply cannot just study one specific subject with no reflection on others,
because that is what aids one in formulating their own ideas and understandings of not only that
subject but their position in the world as well. His idea calls upon

Summary Of Little Red Cap We See Red By Carol Ann Duffy
Autonomy within David Malouf s Ransom is represented by the lack of overbearing and constant
interference by the gods. Although the characters are bound by fate they are unrestricted in acting
within their own free will. In Carol Ann Duffy s Little Red Cap we see Red s autonomy by subverting
the traditional narrative and giving her control of the tale and fate of the Wolf.
The concept that humans possessed their own autonomy over their actions and the opportunities they
took was unfathomable concept to the Ancient Greeks who believed that their destinies were
predetermined and governed by the actions of deities and supernatural forces. Within Ransom it is we

Malouf does not portray fate as an irrevocable procession to the grave and that man is powerless to
contest it. For Malouf, that which cannot be altered in Priam s life is merely left to the gods and that
which can be changed is simply dependent on chance but instead makes it evident that through
perseverance and will, man can exercise a degree of control over his destiny.
When we look at depictions of free will in regards to Achilles, we can see that his reputation
throughout the territory is well known, bringing fear to Trojans and inspiration to the Greeks. Despite
his reputation being earnt through war and strength, Achilles would not be remembered for this.
Malouf presents to us the raw, vulnerable side of Achilles with his mourning for Patroclus. The very
act of dragging Hector s body each morning behind his chariot ... breaks daily every rule [his men] ...

gods do not interfere with Achilles desecration by taking Hector s body, instead they return the body
to an untarnished state, adding to Achilles rage (p.31) Priam s arrival to Achilles camp is an
autonomous act as he wishes to ransom myself as well as my son linking back to the small child

Theatre and Its Double
Le Théâtre et son Double (The Theatre and Its Double) Antonin Artaud The Theatre and Its Double
was first published in French in 1938. It is a collection of essays, manifestos, and letters all written by
the French artist and theatritician Antonin Artaud (1896 1948). Artaud spent much of his life in and
out of asylums and addicted to laudanum and other opiates prescribed to help his so called madness .
During his free times, he wrote, acted, and traveled. Artaud was profoundly moved by a Balinese
dance he saw in 1931. He traveled to Mexico in 1936, lived with a group of Tarahumaran Indians, and
experimented with peyote. He was institutionalized in 1937, following an incident in Ireland. His

He frequently uses the term hieroglyph as a way to represent something visually and without words, as
the Egyptians did with hieroglyphs. Artaud seems to prefer the strict rules of Balinese theatre to the
relative freedom of European/Occidental theatre. Of this idea of pure theatre, which is merely
theoretical in the Occident and to which no one has ever attempted to give the least reality, the
Balinese off us a stupefying realization, suppressing all possibility of recourse to words for the
elucidation of the most abstract themes inventing a language of gesture to be developed in space, a
language without meaning except in the circumstances of the stage (61). Oriental and Occidental
Theatre Here Artaud criticizes Occidental theatre for its dependence on the word and praises Oriental
theatre for its independence from it. Again, Oriental theatre is superior because of its use of imagery
and its metaphysical nature, whereas Occidental theatre is inferior because it is absorbed in
psychology and internal struggles. It is not a matter of suppressing speech in the theatre but of
changing its role, and especially of reducing its position, of considering it as something else than a
means of conducting human characters to their external ends, since the theatre is concerned only with
the way feelings and passions conflict with one another, and man with man, in life (72). No More

Atheism Argument
Theism is the belief of the existence of god as the creator of the world. Atheism, on the flip side,
disagree with the argument of believing in a god as in their view there aren t enough evidence that
God actually exist. While scientists disagree with the existence of God, however, they have not been
able to disproved that god does not exist. In a sense, it s worth pointing out that both argument

that theism utilized faith to explain everything around them which in their view are more than enough
indication in explaining the existence of god. While this logic may be insufficient from atheism point

The Genre Of Horror Films
First of all, genre is the method categorized a film based on similarities in the narrative elements.
There are a wide range of different types of film genres: detective, action, adventure, gangster or
crime, science fiction, drama, horror, romance, comedy, musical and so on. It is quite difficult to
identify a particular film because a film might have a few of different genres. That is the reason why
sub genres exist. Sub genres can help us to more clarity in identify the genre of a film. For example, a
horror film might involve supernatural.thriller, mystery or others. Horror is a classical genre that has
now become far more popular with audiences than perhaps at any other time in its history. This genre
has been around since 1890s and it is one of the oldest genres from Hollywood. The iconic theme
across horror films is usually revolved around mirror, superhuman killer, curse and so on. The ending
will always like return to normalcy and victory over the monstrous. I believe that this is the ending
which most audiences wish to be. There are a few of sub genres in horror films which are slasher
flicks, supernatural and psychological and they are widely adapted in hybrid films nowadays. Slasher
flicks as known as massacre is a type of horror film that usually involves murders killing the victims
in a violent manner and usually with a tool like knife, axe or others. For examples are serial killer and
mass murder. For psychological sub genre

Analysis Of Wonder By R. J Palacio
Wonder by R.J. Palacio is a story about a ten year old fifth grader, August Pullman, who is born with a
facial deformity. August starts school at Beecher Prep, a private school in upper Manhattan, after
being homeschooled for the last five years. He struggles to make friends at first, but meets Summer
Dawson and Jack Will, who become his friends. On Halloween, August dresses up in a Bleeding
Scream costume when everybody at school is expecting him to dress up as Boba Fett. Not realizing it
s August, Jack says, I ve thought about this a lot, and I really think...if I looked liked him, seriously I
think that I d kill myself (Palacio 77). Although August is initially hurt by Jack s words, surprisingly
they make up. At the annual fifth grade field trip, August and Jack seek a place to go the bathroom in
the woods when they are maliciously made fun of by some seventh graders from another school. They
get out of the situation when some students who had made fun of August before come to his defense.
At the fifth grade graduation, August does the unthinkable: He wins the Henry Ward Beecher award
for a student whose quiet strength has carried them up to the most hearts (Palacio 304).
Setting

describes it so well with many vivid details. The book is set in the upper east side of Manhattan in

Buddhism And The Noble Eightfold Path
Siddhartha Gautama was the founder of Buddhism (Van Voorst, R, 2013). Gautama lived a life of a
prince until he witnessed physical suffering in the world. Upon observing the suffering, Gautama
decided to give up everything to become a holy man. He created the Middle Path meaning the moment
between self denial and regular life. He discovered the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold
Path, (Van Voorst, R, 2013).
The basic characteristics of Buddhism are meditating, prayer, rest, exercise, lecture and small group
discussion with other Buddhists in Zen centers and temples around the world. Buddhists believe that
Siddhartha Gautama discovered the Middle Path out of suffering, reaching the full enlightenment that
rescued him from constant reincarnation into this world (Voorst, R., 2013) .

Epidamnus Mistaken Identity
In a play about mistaken identity, the characters are the main focus. The characters of the
Menaechmus twins are at the core of the story. They are introduced as having very different
personality traits despite their identical appearances; Menaechmus of Epidamnus is described as
normally gay, an inveterate jokester, and always out for a good time (Act I), while Menaechmus of

Bestiality In Jonas Liliequist s Peasant Against Nature
Throughout history, humans have maintained a relationship with animals. In some cultures, animals
have served as religious symbols and were worshipped by humans. As society progressed, humans
began to play the more dominant role. Animals began to serve as a source of food, trade,
transportation, and companion. With the frequent interaction between man and animals, boundaries
were eventually crossed. In Peasants against Nature, Jonas Liliequist discussed the excessive cases of
bestiality in seventeenth and eighteenth century Sweden and its inevitable occurrence. With his

When witnessing acts of bestiality, people were in disbelief and petrified. Many reported fainting,
dizziness, and nausea. People did not know how to react when they caught the bugger. They did not

constant pace. A short term time frame for this type of scenario will result in more efficient progress
being made. On another topic, volunteers have been proven, through extensive research on the subject,
to be able to provide locals with some things that very few other aid workers can. The volunteers can
be an effective link between the locals of the community and the humanitarian organizations. As an
example, they can help locals fill out the forms required to apply for funding for certain projects.
Volunteers can also help the locals understand ways in which they can effectively communicate with
their government, and potentially receive more aid from them. Voluntourism agencies often emphasize
the emotional connections that tourists can make with the locals, but rarely speak about this kind of
connection that I have just mentioned. In other words, tourists can be a great resource for the locals,
and that is a very positive aspect of the voluntourism industry. Another positive aspect is that the
experiences that a voluntourist goes through while taking part in a

Personal Historiography
A long time ago, at my first book keeping job, I was challenged with helping a recently divorced man
reorganize and relocate the office portion of his business. Like most marriages she was the brains of
the operation, when it came to the finances. After the split his business took a major hit due to his lack
of knowledge of the office portion of the company. The man was a great deasil mechanic but not so
savvy with paperwork and tracking expenses. The first step we tackled was organizing the new office.
I am not sure how the old one was ran, but the man didn t have one thing carry over to the new office.
I remember the first time I walked in, it was just boxes piled high with random paperwork
everywhere. It was not an easy task but we worked several nights a week in order to get it all sorted
out. We started from scratch and had to input everything into his new QuickBooks program and set up
folders to organize all of his clientele information. This being my first time booking keeping and
running an office, I had to learn a lot, fast, and mostly on my own. By the time all this ... Show more

It was not as simple as you might think. I set up a box in the cab of his truck and would have folders
labeled for each job he was working on, along with an invoice to fill in as he went. All he had to do
was place the receipts and paperwork in the proper folder and write down the billable hours. Somehow
I kept getting back a box of random receipts and folders with blank invoices. So at the end of the job
we would have to sit there together and pick through said box of receipts and decipher what went
where, so we could bill the clients. It was never an easy task and he ended up losing a few jobs due to
the office hours he was having to put in. I am happy to say that he did eventually get into a routine
with his end of the paperwork and was able to focus more on his side of the

Analysis Of James Joyce s A Portrait Of An Artist As A...
James Joyce and H.G. Welles had different styles of writing and relied on different forms of narration.
H.G. Wells was direct and focused on the external environment or situation. He did not give much
insight on the thoughts or internal struggle of his characters, while James Joyce did. Joyce supplied his
characters with a greater level of internal comprehension than Wells did and was able to provide more
human like characters. This difference is especially seen in H.G Well s Tono Bungay and James Joyce
s A Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man. They do share their views on the lifestyle of religious people,
but there is a difference in their style of writing their respective novels. They contrast in how they
convey emotional moments, they portray violence in different lights, and their view toward youth is
contradictory. In Tono Bungay by Wells, one sees that his style of writing is autobiographical. He
attempts to portray his novel as inspired by his own life. This is seen in the opening pages of the novel
when he is explaining the purpose of Tono Bungay, I warn you this book is going to be something of
an agglomeration. I want to trace my social trajectory (and my uncle s) as the main line of my story,
but as this is my first novel and almost certainly my last, I want to get in, too, all sorts of things that
struck me, things that amused me and impressions I got even although they don t minister directly to
my narrative at all...I ve given, I see, an impression that I want

Livia Alternate Ending Essay
Livia tried not to put any thoughts toward her husband s new acquisition. The dark haired man fought
like a caged animal and seemed always at the ready to lunge for anyone s throat, with a quiet sort of
anger that was hard to detect. She was a bit frightened of him to be sure yet she also was... curious.
Where did one find such a creature, thrown into the Abyss and pulled back a changed man? She never
asked of the men and women her husband found in the market when they arrived in their service, aside
from a few of the body slaves who she became close with. Their stories were often the same: prisoners
of war spared harsher masters in their homeland, women forced to repay debts of their male relatives,
or the rare girl who was born a slave. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her tone was decisive and stern, though laced with concern as the boy peeled his face from the
ground. Short blonde locks were coated in sand and a string of blood oozed from his nose, likely from
having landed in a poor position on his face. He sniffed hard and stood up as quickly as his disoriented
head would allow and went toward the medicus whose room was just below the balcony. Livia
watched him go until he was out of sight, then turned with burning eyes upon Maximus. You are not
here to take out your frustrations upon the others. There is no honour in beating him when he has
already fallen, she stated with evident irritation at his cruelty. Perhaps she was worried this was why
Cassian purchased him. Your life continues because you have been spared the mines. You are given
food and shelter in exchange for laurels in the arena. Do not forget that. And do not raise your weapon
to any of the men in jest. One day you could be fighting with him at your back, to find your only ally
would see you dead just as readily as your opponent, Livia coldly reminded him. Her cheeks were a
bit flushed from anger though it could easily be dismissed as the heat of the morning sun, or the
honeyed wine she drank from in a polished

Poland is located in Central/Eastern Europe. It s locational and geographical properties have been in a
constant changing state. It covers 120,700 square miles. On the north Poland is bordered by the Baltic

  • 4. Various Rocket Propellants and Their Characterstics Rocket A rocket is a missile, spacecraft, aircraft or other vehicle which obtains thrust from a rocket engine. In all rockets, the exhaust is formed entirely from propellants carried within the rocket before use.[1] Rocket engines work by action and reaction. Rocket engines push rockets forwards simply by throwing their exhaust backwards extremely fast. Rockets for military and recreational uses date back to at least 13th century China.[2] Significant scientific, interplanetary and industrial use did not occur until the 20th century, when rocketry was the enabling technology of the Space Age, including setting foot on the moon. Rockets are used for fireworks, weaponry, ejection seats, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rocket propellant Rocket propellant is mass that is stored in some form of propellant tank, prior to being used as the propulsive mass that is ejected from a rocket engine in the form of a fluid jet to produce thrust. A fuel propellant is often burned with an oxidizer propellant to produce large volumes of very hot gas. These gases expand and push on a nozzle, which accelerates them until they rush out of the back of the rocket at extremely high speed, making thrust. Sometimes the propellant is not burned, but can be externally heated for more performance. For smaller attitude control thrusters, a compressed gas escapes the spacecraft through a propelling nozzle. Chemical rocket propellants are most commonly used, which undergo exothermic chemical reactions to produce hot gas used by a rocket for propulsive purposes. In ion propulsion, the propellant is made of electrically charged atoms (ions), which are electromagnetically pushed out of the back of the spacecraft. Magnetically accelerated ion drives are not usually considered to be rockets however, but a similar class of thrusters use electrical heating and magnetic nozzles. Chemical propellants There are three main types of propellants: solid, liquid, and hybrid. Solid propellants History The earliest rockets were created hundreds of years ago by the Chinese, and ... • 5. William Shakespeare s Vampire Bat Final Assignment Part 2 by Brandy Mearnic Vampire Bat The vampire bat also comes from a Subfamily called desmodontinae. There are three different types of bat species: The common vampire bat, hairy legged vampire bat and white winged vampire bat. These three different species are mostly native to the New World, but can be found in parts of Mexico and Brazil, Chile and Argentina. Their main source of food is blood. Instead of sucking the blood to feed on they make a small cut with their teeth and then lick up the blood from the fresh wound. While feeding, they can feed for up to 30 minutes without waking the animal they are feeding on up. They have a short muzzle and instead of a nose leaf, they have exposed (or naked) pads with u shaped grooves at the tip of the nose. The common vampire bat has thermoreceptors that help the bat to locate areas where the blood flows close in it s prey. Vampire bats have small ears and very short tail. The front teeth of a vampire bat are designed for cutting and the back teeth are smaller than other bats. A bat s brain processes sound and can detect breathing sounds of other animals sleeping. This part of the brain is called the inferior colliculus. Mostly all bats have lost the ability to walk on the ground, but there are some that still run while on the ground. Their wings are much more powerful than their legs, though. Bats live in colonies is complete, dark places such as caves, wells, trees and some buildings. The number of ... Vt. 1991) is a case where the Plaintiff sues a skier that feel and thereby knocking down the plaintiff who feel and injured his back. The jury came back with a defendant verdict and the plaintiff files a motion for a new trial on the grounds that the court made an error in instructing the jury as to the Vermont Sports Injury Statute and its relation to the doctrine of assumption of risk and the applications to this case. The appellate court denied their motion for a new trial and stated that the sports injury statute applied to participants in any sport. This inheritance of assumptions of risk and if the action is applicable to the case is a question of fact for the jury, and therefore the jury in this matter found it applicable, which was not thereby applicable for a new trial. The jury in the Dillworth matter applied the assumption of risks to all participants in sports, not just the operators of ski resort. In regards to dangerous activities and sports in general the court stated that when a primary assumption of the risk exists there is no liability to the plaintiff because there is no negligence on the part of the defendant to begin with; the danger to the plaintiff is not one which the defendant is required to extinguish or warn about. Having no duty to begin with, there is no breach of duty to constitute negligence, showing that even other participants not just those in charge of the activity can not be negligent for risks that are inherent to the activity. This assumption of risk has a broader appeal than just skiing and was stated that A person who takes part in any sport, including skiing, accepts as a Torts P.I. The Water Supply For Caracas Flow From 2 Major National Parks Based on the country s population, there s a large percentage of people living in the big cities which has the greatest water availability . Cities usually use, reservoirs to sub sustain their population. Caracas gets their water supplies from these reservoirs: Camatagua, La Mariposa, La Pereza, Taguaza, Taguacita, Lagartijo, Quebrada Seca, Macaroa river, and Cuira (Gonzalez 2015). Most of these water supply for Caracas flow from 2 major national parks. The water supply is limited because of the amount of people living in the capital. What attracts people are the abundance of water but then there are issues of when the water supplies run out. Venezuela as a country is prone to droughts even with Caracas being in the tropical regions of Venezuela. The important surface body of water is the Macaroa which is an important watershed to the city. Some of these water supplies come from the El Avila national park as does from the Macaroa national park. The majority of them are surface bodies of water but flow within the underground watershed to conserve the water supply during the drought. It is understandable that, Of all the drinking water consumed in the city of Caracas, over eighty percent comes from the Tuy I, Tuy II and Tuy III aqueducts, which are fed from the watershed basins of the Tuy and Camatagua rivers. • 9. Why Is College So Expensive If Students Are Paid So Little... A Response to Michelle Chen A teacher has one of the most difficult and highest demanding jobs in society. They are responsible for educating the future and giving their students the best chance to succeed. However, many teachers and professors are not paid nearly as much as the demands placed on them should indicate. Michelle Chen, in her piece from The Nation titled, Why Is College So Expensive if Professors Are Paid So Little?, attempts to analyze the current issues with professors wages in college and provide possible solutions. Although Chen presents some solid ideas, her work suffers from her failure to address why college is so expensive, her inability to provide more than one solution, and her overreliance on emotional aspects of the conflict. In her essay, Chen states a few problems that can hardly be argued with: college is far too expensive and professors are paid much too little. She focuses mostly on adjuncts, or part time professors, as it is in this area that many of the problems reside. She writes, With student debt and tuitions both ballooning across the country, a college degree is in many ways more expensive or overvalued today than ever. Unfortunately, she fails to provide in depth analysis on why college is so costly to begin with. It is because of this shortcoming that Chen s work is much weaker as a whole. Firstly, her title becomes misleading, and makes her a possibly untrustworthy source. Secondly, her failure to acknowledge the reasons why college is so expensive cuts off an entire possibility of solutions. Addressing where all this money is being spent could provide an easier and stronger solution than the one Chen provides. When discussing a topic such as this, there are an abundance of possible solutions that are worth taking a look at. Michelle Chen, however, only decides to closely examine one: unionization of faculty. She says, [Layfield] hopes that organizing with her union for a fair contract can ensure future generations of faculty will face a richer career horizon. While unionization is certainly not a bad idea, Chen puts too much focus on this one solution. She fails to even acknowledge other possible solutions, such as making cuts in administrative budgets ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Also, the low success rate of drugs from development through FDA approval decreases the chance that a competitor will develop an alternative treatment. The bargaining power of the customers within the Orphan Drug patient population is classified as medium/low. While patients are price sensitive; the cost of treatment for most is subsidized by either health insurance or government funding and therefore the price of these treatments are typically very high. The average per patient on an orphan drug in the year of 2014 was calculated to be over $110,0001. While the average cost is currently high, this has become and increased area of scrutiny worldwide and many governments are enacting price control within the industry, eating away at potential profits. Once a company has successfully developed an orphan drug and gained FDA approval, the process to build and operate a manufacturing facility can be extremely costly. This is driven by the fact that the bargaining power of the supplies is medium/high. This classification is because of the extreme regulations that exist for not only the equipment, but also the raw materials used within the drug manufacturing process. • 11. Theory of Democratic Peace Jestin Thompson Political Science 23 April 2013 Final Paper Theory of Democratic Peace The idea of democratic peace was brought up in the enlightened era. The theory of democratic peace was based off of Immanuel Kant s Perpetual Peace. The theory of democratic peace argues that nation states governed by democratic regimes do not tend to have conflicts with other countries that would lead to wars. With this theory, it shows that nation states with a democratic rule are more likely to not go to war with other countries. In some cases, this theory has been proven to be true, but in other cases it has not, especially with the United States. There are many proponents and opponents for this theory. Through this essay, the theory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a way that the theorists distort the definition of war, so it portrays democratic states as peaceful nations, who don t go to war with each other. In fact, it s the opposite because the democratic nations do fight each other, but based off the criteria of having a thousand deaths they never had a war with each other. Last, the democratic nations recognizing each other as democratic nations. With this recognition, it is used as a standard to determine whether democratic states fight each other. Without the mutual recognition, there is no proof that democracies fight each other. In order to be recognized as a democratic state, many of the states that claim to be democratic have to fit the liberal principles. Opposing views of the democratic peace theory believe as times go on this theory will continued to be distorted to fit the different circumstances that are to come in the future. Further in this essay, three different countries with different governing styles will be used to test the theory of democratic peace s accuracy or falseness. For the democratic rule, the country is South Africa. Using Russia as the authoritarian rule, and China as the totalitarian rule. By using these countries, it shows if the democratic peace theory applies to other governing styles. Although South Africa is now a democratic rule, it did not start off with this rule. ... This was the case in the short story On The Rainy River written by Tim O Brien. Young Tim is drafted to the military to fight the American War in Vietnam. The thought of giving up the future he has worked so hard for and instead fight a war for uncertain reasons terrifies him. He must make the agonizing decision of whether to pursue his personal desire and in turn be shamed by society or conform, sacrificing his ideals in the process. Through the initial characterization of young Tim, O Brien suggests that when faced with unexpected life changing dilemmas people will more often than naught end up clouded judgement and panic. Young Tim is ambitious and well educated, he is on his way to Harvard University on a scholarship. His life is heading in the best direction possible. This is until he receives the draft letter. Early Nuclear Physics Essay 1 Introduction 1.1 A Brief History of Early Nuclear Physics In the early 1900s it was seen that a small number of alpha particles were deflected by a large angle, the current model at the time predicted only small deflections of the particles. These results were explained by introducing a tiny positively charged nucleus into our picture of the atom. Although beta decay had been observed as early as 1896 and was known to contain electrons, it wasn t until 1914 that they would break the law of energy conservation if just composed of electrons. To account for the discrepancy in energy during beta decay, Wolfgang Pauli suggested that a very light, neutral charged particle was also released during beta decay, this particle was named the ... Currently a large factor used in deciding whether to use a model, is the dif ficulty in solving this mathematical model to produce physical values. A much more complicated model may give the most accurate results, but the difficulty in obtaining any result e.g. the computational time required, is not worth the gain in accuracy. • 18. The Importance Of Censorship In College Education The United States, the land of the free, prides itself in the rights given to its people. Despite the acclaimed freedom of America, Americans, especially college students, are not as free as the founding fathers would have hoped. When the First Amendment was adopted on December 15, 1791, Americans were given the Freedom of Religion, Speech, the Press, Assembly, and Petition. While the Constitution clearly grants these rights to all U.S. citizens, individuals still fight for these freedoms. Specifically, the Freedom of Speech is an ongoing issue which people continue to pursue. This freedom is essential to student growth in higher education, yet college students are often limited by what they can say while on campus. The censorship of individual and group speech threatens the purpose of a liberal education. It also limits the freedoms of a free society. Students should be encouraged to voice their individual feelings and views on worldly issues, instead of being shunned and threatened for doing so. The purpose of a liberal education is to not only to educate individuals but also to introduce them to the different cultures and beliefs of the students they sit beside during class. Exposure to the views of others allows students to expand their own knowledge on current issues, individual rights, cultural differences, and more. I visited both museums and it was evident to me that they bore many differences, and at the same time, they were also similar in some aspects. Historically, the Frick Collection was a private collection by Henry Clay Frick, who started the collection and housed it in his own home. (2) Both museums are situated in wealthy areas of New York City and thus indicate that there may be an association between the grandeur of museums and wealth or sophistication. Another aspect that I found to be very interesting was the way in which each of the museums offered different multimedia formats to facilitate the visitor s experience with the artwork in display. I noticed that both museums offered applications for smartphones and tablets, free of charge, to assist the visitors with getting the most possible out of the museum. Visiting a museum can be a very distracting task because there is so much to see and without a plan or a navigating system that helps you make your way towards the museum, it can be hard to gain something from your visit. The preference of the shopper really determines whether or not they have a pleasant experience and the time to look for their items. There are many similarities as well as differences with online shopping and traditional shopping. The main factors that I will be discussing are convenience, discounts and item availability. Convenience is really a significant factor with both types of shopping. As of the 2011 Time Survey, the average American spends about 43.2 minutes per day shopping, which is down from 48.6 minutes per day in 2003. Cyber Monday is vastly becoming as popular as Black Friday, and for some, more popular. Retail centers will offer discounts to a certain number of customers first to arrive. Many online sellers will offer free shipping in addition to sales and discounts to compete. A consumer can save a considerable amount of money by researching an item they want to purchase to obtain the best deal. In addition, online sellers feature lower prices because they do not have the overhead costs such as rent, utilities and sales people. In comparison, retail centers will slash prices to compete against online retailers. Another savings with online shopping is that a consumer might not have to pay sales tax based on their residency. (Torres, 2017) Coupons and gift cards can be applied with either method of shopping allowing further discounts off regular priced items. Item availability is significant for online shopping. • 23. Plato s Idea of the Emergence of Tyranny from Democracy Essay What are tyrants, one might ask. In the current sense of the word a tyrant is pejorative term, applied to an individual in power who is selfish and self preserving. A tyrant is an immoral being, ruling over those around him through force, a tax on the freedom of those he subjugates. Yet the question that one should be asking is where do tyrants come from? Plato proposed that tyrants are a product of democracy, that the liberty inherent to a democracy allows the self interested to manipulate the system(generally through appealing to the population at large) causing a system with little liberty. This is where the large uninterested portion of a democratic population make it possible for tyrants to emerge. • 24. Character Analysis Of The Pit And The Pendulum The Pit and the Pendulum Character Analysis Essay Edgar Allen Poe s The Pit and the Pendulum uses horror and suspicion to build up not only the storyline, but the persona of the narrator in which is also the prisoner. The characteristics of the prisoner ties within the story to create trippy feelings of fear and unassertiveness of whether or not he is truly safe. From the trials that the prisoner has faced, his characteristic of resourcefulness, pessimistic, and terror are revealed and play a salient part of his slick escape. The prisoner exemplifies resourcefulness which is shown through his actions of survival. Despite his unstableness, he still manages to remain clever in such a frightening situation. Poe asserts that the prisoner is resourceful considering he uses the hem of his robe to plot out his area: I tore a part of the hem from the robe, and placed the fragment at full length, and at right angles to the wall. In groping my way around the prison, I could not fail to encounter this rag upon completing the circuit. (Poe 3). Being that he uses his resources to find his way around the tomb, he learns that he is among a treacherous pit which could mean death. This action alters the whole course of the story due to the possibility of the prisoner falling into the pit. The prisoner continues to show signs of resourcefulness in the toughest situations: Observing that I remained without motion, one or two of the boldest leaped upon the frame work and smelt at the surcingle. This seemed the signal for a general rush. Forth from the well they hurried in fresh troops. They clung to the wood, they overran it, and leaped in hundreds upon my person. (Poe 8). Using the rats as a pathway to his freedom from the pendulum, his quick thinking saved his life. With that being said, the prisoner uses his traits of resourcefulness to escape without letting fear block his tactics. Poe reveals the prisoners aspect of showing pessimistic traits through his thoughts of seeing the worst outcome of events. • 27. Analysis Of David Orr s The Principle Of Mastering Oneself An important point in which David Orr goes into considerable detail about is his six principles to rethink education. First, he ensures that all education is environmental education by every mean. In western education particularly, students are more often taught that they are apart of taught that they are apart from the natural world, or above it if you will. Leesa Fawcett enforces this idea on page 107 by stating: We have been taught to measure, manage, exploit the environment, to make money off of it on the back s of others near and far. We ve been encouraged to ignore it, to stay out of its messy dirty places. To ignore it is to ignore ourselves, our bodies, our forces and our relationships Fawcett implies that undeniably students are being taught that education is the way to success and success means exploiting the environment and ignoring the importance of sustainability. Next Orr uses the Greek term, Paideia to formulate his principle of mastering oneself is the goal of education and subjects are the tools of doing so (Orr, 2004, pg. 9). The current education system looks at specializing in one particular subject, and being really knowledgeable in that subject alone is what education strives for. However, one simply cannot just study one specific subject with no reflection on others, because that is what aids one in formulating their own ideas and understandings of not only that subject but their position in the world as well. Although the characters are bound by fate they are unrestricted in acting within their own free will. The concept that humans possessed their own autonomy over their actions and the opportunities they took was unfathomable concept to the Ancient Greeks who believed that their destinies were predetermined and governed by the actions of deities and supernatural forces. For Malouf, that which cannot be altered in Priam s life is merely left to the gods and that which can be changed is simply dependent on chance but instead makes it evident that through perseverance and will, man can exercise a degree of control over his destiny. When we look at depictions of free will in regards to Achilles, we can see that his reputation throughout the territory is well known, bringing fear to Trojans and inspiration to the Greeks. Again, Oriental theatre is superior because of its use of imagery and its metaphysical nature, whereas Occidental theatre is inferior because it is absorbed in psychology and internal struggles. It is not a matter of suppressing speech in the theatre but of changing its role, and especially of reducing its position, of considering it as something else than a means of conducting human characters to their external ends, since the theatre is concerned only with the way feelings and passions conflict with one another, and man with man, in life (72). • 41. Bestiality In Jonas Liliequist s Peasant Against Nature Throughout history, humans have maintained a relationship with animals. In some cultures, animals have served as religious symbols and were worshipped by humans. As society progressed, humans began to play the more dominant role. Animals began to serve as a source of food, trade, transportation, and companion. With the frequent interaction between man and animals, boundaries were eventually crossed. In Peasants against Nature, Jonas Liliequist discussed the excessive cases of bestiality in seventeenth and eighteenth century Sweden and its inevitable occurrence. With his various sources, Liliequist proposed that bestiality occurred due to the frequent interactions between men and animals, lack of culture, sexual frustration, and basic curiosity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When witnessing acts of bestiality, people were in disbelief and petrified. Many reported fainting, dizziness, and nausea. People did not know how to react when they caught the bugger. They did not want to confront the bugger in fear of provoking violence. The ultimate fear was that they condemned themselves by simply witnessing the impure acts (65). Those who engaged in acts of bestiality were ostracized by society. No one wanted to be associated with them. Wives did not want to engage in sexual relations with their husbands. Similarly, the bugger s family did not want to share the same last name. No one wanted to touch the bugger or his belongings (68). Likewise, the animals who were victims of the assailants were considered impure. Their bodies were corrupted. Many owners chose to execute the animals because the milk was no longer drinkable, and their meat no longer viable. However, it was considered illegal to kill the animals until the trials. Despite being poor and resulting in an economic loss, farmers chose to kill the impure animals in order to distances themselves as much as possible from the bugger (71). Society ensured that those who performed inhuman acts, were treated as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Short Term Volunteer Trips ( 1-3 Days ) Essay There are numerous aspects of voluntourism that are positive in nature. For example, short term volunteer trips (1 3 weeks) can be quite beneficial in the case of dealing with the aftermath of a natural disaster. In the case of a serious catastrophe like that, it can take years to rebuild the community that it occurred in. With a continuous stream of fresh volunteer recruits, the momentum will remain at a constant pace. A short term time frame for this type of scenario will result in more efficient progress being made. On another topic, volunteers have been proven, through extensive research on the subject, to be able to provide locals with some things that very few other aid workers can. The volunteers can be an effective link between the locals of the community and the humanitarian organizations. As an example, they can help locals fill out the forms required to apply for funding for certain projects. Volunteers can also help the locals understand ways in which they can effectively communicate with their government, and potentially receive more aid from them. Voluntourism agencies often emphasize the emotional connections that tourists can make with the locals, but rarely speak about this kind of connection that I have just mentioned. In other words, tourists can be a great resource for the locals, and that is a very positive aspect of the voluntourism industry. Another positive aspect is that the experiences that a voluntourist goes through while taking part in a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Personal Historiography A long time ago, at my first book keeping job, I was challenged with helping a recently divorced man reorganize and relocate the office portion of his business. Like most marriages she was the brains of the operation, when it came to the finances. After the split his business took a major hit due to his lack of knowledge of the office portion of the company. The man was a great deasil mechanic but not so savvy with paperwork and tracking expenses. The first step we tackled was organizing the new office. I am not sure how the old one was ran, but the man didn t have one thing carry over to the new office. I remember the first time I walked in, it was just boxes piled high with random paperwork everywhere. It was not an easy task but we worked several nights a week in order to get it all sorted out. We started from scratch and had to input everything into his new QuickBooks program and set up folders to organize all of his clientele information. This being my first time booking keeping and running an office, I had to learn a lot, fast, and mostly on my own. By the time all this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was not as simple as you might think. I set up a box in the cab of his truck and would have folders labeled for each job he was working on, along with an invoice to fill in as he went. All he had to do was place the receipts and paperwork in the proper folder and write down the billable hours. Somehow I kept getting back a box of random receipts and folders with blank invoices. So at the end of the job we would have to sit there together and pick through said box of receipts and decipher what went where, so we could bill the clients. It was never an easy task and he ended up losing a few jobs due to the office hours he was having to put in. I am happy to say that he did eventually get into a routine with his end of the paperwork and was able to focus more on his side of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Analysis Of James Joyce s A Portrait Of An Artist As A... James Joyce and H.G. Welles had different styles of writing and relied on different forms of narration. H.G. Wells was direct and focused on the external environment or situation. He did not give much insight on the thoughts or internal struggle of his characters, while James Joyce did. Joyce supplied his characters with a greater level of internal comprehension than Wells did and was able to provide more human like characters. This difference is especially seen in H.G Well s Tono Bungay and James Joyce s A Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man. They do share their views on the lifestyle of religious people, but there is a difference in their style of writing their respective novels. They contrast in how they convey emotional moments, they portray violence in different lights, and their view toward youth is contradictory. In Tono Bungay by Wells, one sees that his style of writing is autobiographical. He attempts to portray his novel as inspired by his own life. This is seen in the opening pages of the novel when he is explaining the purpose of Tono Bungay, I warn you this book is going to be something of an agglomeration. I want to trace my social trajectory (and my uncle s) as the main line of my story, but as this is my first novel and almost certainly my last, I want to get in, too, all sorts of things that struck me, things that amused me and impressions I got even although they don t minister directly to my narrative at all...I ve given, I see, an impression that I want ... • 45. Livia Alternate Ending Essay Livia tried not to put any thoughts toward her husband s new acquisition. The dark haired man fought like a caged animal and seemed always at the ready to lunge for anyone s throat, with a quiet sort of anger that was hard to detect. She was a bit frightened of him to be sure yet she also was... curious. Where did one find such a creature, thrown into the Abyss and pulled back a changed man? She never asked of the men and women her husband found in the market when they arrived in their service, aside from a few of the body slaves who she became close with. Their stories were often the same: prisoners of war spared harsher masters in their homeland, women forced to repay debts of their male relatives, or the rare girl who was born a slave. ... Short blonde locks were coated in sand and a string of blood oozed from his nose, likely from having landed in a poor position on his face. He sniffed hard and stood up as quickly as his disoriented head would allow and went toward the medicus whose room was just below the balcony. Livia watched him go until he was out of sight, then turned with burning eyes upon Maximus. You are not here to take out your frustrations upon the others. There is no honour in beating him when he has already fallen, she stated with evident irritation at his cruelty. Perhaps she was worried this was why Cassian purchased him. Your life continues because you have been spared the mines. You are given food and shelter in exchange for laurels in the arena. Do not forget that. And do not raise your weapon to any of the men in jest. One day you could be fighting with him at your back, to find your only ally would see you dead just as readily as your opponent, Livia coldly reminded him.
