Snare Drum Research Paper
When most people think of a drum line they categorize it all as drums , but what they don t know is
that each drum, although similar, have their own role. The most known drums, the snare and the bass,
have many similarities, but they are also different in many ways. The bass drum and snare drum are
very structurally similar. Both have a cylindrically shaped shell and two tightly stretched drum heads.
The shell of the drum is usually made of wood such as poplar, birch, or maple that is veneered. Then a
final clear, hard, top coat protectant covering. They also have lugs that span the length of the shell to
keep the drum heads at the right pitch. The snare drum and bass drum are both percussion instruments.
The word percussion means, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The drumline comes onto the field as a group and given a visual effect position of a front to middle
ensemble. This position shows off the massive sound produced from a small group of drums and quick
flying stick work. The drummers wear a harness to be able to carry their drum while keeping in step
with the group. Although the snare drum and bass drum have some similarities, their differences are
more apparent. How the bass and snare drums are played is quite opposite. The drum head of a snare
sits horizontally, while the heads of a bass drum sit vertically. With the snare drum wooden sticks are
used to produce the strong cracking sound when hitting the head. On a bass drum cushion tipped
mallets are hit on either side of the drum to make its booming sound. The snare and bass drum have
very different and distinct sounds. The snare drum is mainly rhythm based and plays sharp, quick
sounds, while the bass drum is used to keep the beat and plays longer, sustained notes. This is because
the snare drum head is stretched tighter than the bass head and the snare drum has a set of metal
springs stretched across the bottom head. Another big difference is that the snare drum can only play
one pitch, while the bass drum usually plays in a line with drums of many sizes and

Fair Trade vs Free Trade
Fair Trade Versus Free Trade
Cohort 4 believes that fair trade is the most prosperous way to trade with other countries. Both free
trade and fair trade have advantages and disadvantages. The researchers in Cohort 4 have established a
viewpoint regarding fair trade and free trade. Considering the research that the cohort has conducted,
they are in opposition to free trade.
The terms free and fair trade sometimes go hand in hand but there are distinct differences between the
two. According to Wikipedia, free trade is a system of trade policy that allows traders to act and or
transact without interference from the government. Free trade implies the trade of goods without taxes
(tarrifs) or other trade barriers such as quotas, subsidies, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fair Trade s consumer recognition has tripled in the last five years, proving the company s
sustainability in a global market. As of today, this organization works with more than 800 companies
to verify more than 6,000 products as Fair Trade. In 2009, Fair Trade Certified products generated
$1.2 billion in retail sales, indicating their large scale business practices. The month of October is
themed Every Purchase Matters for Fair Trade USA. This annual awareness campaign rings together a
diverse range of corporate, nonprofit, producer and consumer partners with more than 100 events
including fund raising parties, and promotions across the United States. These events raise
understanding and knowledge of the Fair Trade movement with social, economic, and environmental
empowerment for the farming population and consumers all across the globe (Economics, 2010). In
Addition to Fair Trade USA, Cohort 4 believes that the general American population does not support
free trade as well. NBC news and Wall Street Journal did a poll and the results were interesting. Sixty
nine percent of Americans believe that free trade agreements with other countries have cost jobs in the
United States. While eighteen percent believe that they have created jobs (Harwood). During the
recession it is easy to see that many Americans are out of work. Since many products used in the U.S.

Powerful Female Characters in Theater Essay
Powerful Female Characters in Theater A craving for life and the pursuit of happiness are concepts
everyone cherishes in one way or another. Everyone s goals and ambitions for the future vary from
one to the next, yet each person shares a common bond, each hope for their own personal happiness.
The search of the truth and the power it produces cause internal conflict during one s pursuit of this so
called happiness. The search for this is not made without obstacles along the way. One must overcome
the tribulations handed to him or her by his or her society. Often women have a more difficult time
breaking through the chains that society has cast upon them. In three specific instances, Hedda Gabler

In Henrik Isben s Hedda Gabler, he masterfully portrays the main character,
Hedda, as neither a monster nor a saint . . . [she] is simply a tragic character who is destroyed by the
unharmonious and irreconciliable contrasts in her own character. Ibsen first expressed Hedda s
emotional sterility by showing how she is unable to reciprocate in a relationship. Hedda s lack of
freedom to act independently in the society that caused her to believe that she would find an answer in
manipulation causes her to come face to face with reality. She is forced to realize that her efforts are
futile and her manipulation is only hurting herself. Like a young child, she can only receive without
knowing how to give in return. This highly intense interest with the lives of others is another aspect of
her emotionally empty life. While at the same time of investigating and analyzing other people s lives
is one way for Hedda to gain some understanding of her own unsatisfied self, she ultimately reveals
that she herself is very frail, fragile, and self centered. It is this indeed that puts Hedda on her path to a
tragic destruction, a path that is being taken rather quickly. Another way in which Isben displays her
thirst for more in her life is when Hedda burns the manuscript. Hedda feels that somehow destroying
something that she should have been able to create in the first place will make her feel

How Did The Articles Of Confederation Lead To The Drafting...
Although the Articles of the Confederation became known as the United States first written
constitution, it did not became ratified by all states until after four years after it was adopted and only
lasted for 12 years until it was later replaced with the Constitution we used today. The Articles did set
a foundation for our modern day constitution but in its early stages posed serious problems that lead to
the drafting of a new constitution. Some of those problems included vesting the entire central
government within just Congress (lack of Executive, and Judicial Branch), giving central government
very limited power on how it handled state to state affair, and lack of national army because the army
was composed of state militias. The articles

Why We Shouldn T Go To Mars Analysis
Imagine yourself sending a spouse to space on a mission to test the living conditions on Mars. You
spent millions of dollars to send this person there. After a few months, you receive news that your
spouse passed away during the mission due to the hazardous conditions in space. Now you are left
alone to fend for yourself due to this exploration journey. The source Why We Shouldn t Go To Mars

contrary, the source Remarks at the Dedication of the Aerospace Medical Health Center by JFK is
about how space exploration is a very wise idea and should be put into practice. The Political Cartoon

.1. How does the child react to frustration/disappointment?
On 11/4 Teddy (15 months) was observed getting upset when a Velcro toy was put around his wrist.
He expressed his frustration by looking at the toy and his face showed an annoyed expression as he
put his arm out to the teacher and looks at her. When she does not take it off for him, he resorts to
making the frustrated face accompanied with a whining sound and some mumbling then the teach took
the toy off his wrist.
On 10/24 Teddy dealt with disappointment in a similar way. He wanted to go up in the loft, and he
asked by looking at me and making his whining sound. When I told him he could not go up there right
now he whined louder and it turned into more of a crying sound but without any tears.

Why Community Service Is Important
Do you feel community service is important to a community? Why or why not? Explain your answer
in two or three paragraphs.
Community Service is important for many reasons. Taking part and volunteering teaches compassion
and understanding. One of my favorite things about community service is that there are opportunities
and choices everywhere! You can volunteer for something you really believe and have an interest in,
and can volunteer as much or as little as you d like or have time for.

The Literary Impact Of George Orwell . George Orwell, Born
The Literary Impact of George Orwell
George Orwell, born as Eric Arthur Blair, was a British journalist and author. His works were
compelling, especially, when it comes to his strong political beliefs. He is considered one of the most
widely admired English language essayists of the twentieth century. As Elkins points out, he is best
known for the two novels that were written toward the end of his life: the anti utopian political
allegory Animal Farm and the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty Four (New World Encyclopedia).
With the publication of these two novels, Orwell became one of the most important science fiction
writers of modern time (Elkins). George Orwell, due to his early life experiences, inspired millions to

He went on to tell of the miseries of those years in his posthumously published autobiographical essay
Such, Such Were the Joys in 1953 (Encyclopedia Britannica). Orwell wrote in his essay, Class
distinctions obsessed the children and the school authorities as well, and became an excuse for a
variety of injustices and daily humiliations. Those at the top of the hierarchy had the power to
dominate, and to impose their will upon those at the bottom. (Elkins).
In spite of his obvious intelligence and offers of scholarships, Orwell chose not to continue his
education at a university. Instead, he joined the Indian Imperial Police in Burma. He felt that he was
being called to follow in the footsteps of many family members. For several years, he was viewed as
an impeccable community servant. He accepted a great deal of responsibility for someone of such a
young age. The desire to become a writer continued to weigh heavily on his heart, and he left his job
as a police officer after just five years. He had the support of his fiance Eileen, and they later married
in 1936.
According to Encyclopedia Britannica, it was at this time that Orwell began to search for repentance
for the guilt that he felt when he finally realized just how poorly the Burmese were treated by Britain.
He felt that the barriers of race and caste had prevented his mingling with the Burmese, and he thought
that he could expiate some of his guilt by immersing himself in the life of the

Are Ads Harming Our Children
Are Ads Harming Our Children? To ban or not to ban, that is the question in this case. I was acually
watching this television show the other day and on it, there was a little boy watching T.V. when a
commercial for a stuffed animal came on. Instead of hearing what the commercial was actually saying,
all it showed was the stuffed animal trying to convince the little boy to get his parents to buy it. The
little boy then, would not stop asking his parents until they finally got it for him. So maybe, it s not
just the ads fault, it could be also the way most parents comply when their child begs for something. In
this essay, I m going to show alternative methods to keeping kids healthy and creating a better place

Sahel Climate
The Sahel is an area in Africa which suffers droughts and it is hard to grow crops due to the hot
climate. Seasonal shifts there lead to decreased rainfall and the drought tolerant maize helps farmers
adapt to climate change.
The Sahel is the transition zone in Africa. It has a great typical ecoclimatic and biogeographic
reflection of a semi arid climate. It is located between the Sahara to the north and the Sudanian
Savanna which was historically called the Sudan region to the south.[1] The Sahel crosses the south
central latitudes of Northern Africa between the Atlantic Ocean and the Red Sea. And the Sahel has a
tropical, hot steppe climate which means the climate there is typically hot, sunny, dry and there are
winds all year long. The cause of the hot weather is that the Sahel has a high to very high sunshine
duration year round while the Sahel is near the equator. It has annual sunshine duration between 2,700
hours which is more than about 61% of the daylight hours on other places and 3,500 hours which is
more than 79% of the daylight hours. The sunshine duration in the Sahel approaches desert levels, and
is comparable to that in the Arabian Desert, even though the Sahel is only a steppe and not a desert.
Also the cloud cover of the Sahel is low to very low.[2] Because of the above reasons, the climate is
generally hot, with unreliable rains across different seasons. The dry season is usually from October to

Accounting Lease
Accounting for Leases
Source: Solutions Manual t/a Australian Financial Accounting 7/e by Craig Deegan
11.1 Within AASB 117 a lease is defined as: an agreement whereby the lessor conveys to the lessee in
return for a payment or series of payments the right to use an asset for an agreed period of time.

(a) for a lessee, any amounts guaranteed by the lessee or by a party related to the lessee; or (b) for a

(ii) a party related to the lessee; or

exercise of this purchase option and the payment required to exercise it. As the last part of the above
requirement indicates, for a lessee, the minimum lease payments include any bargain purchase option,

Newspaper Bridge Project
The Newspaper bridge project is a project where students are given the challenge to make a bridge
using newspaper, straws, and tape. Each material has a price. 1 sheet of paper $10, 1 straw $1, and 10
cm of tape $2. Students were given the challenge to make a bridge only using $25 of materials. In this
essay, I will be explaining the process which my group constructed our bridge for this project. And
answer the question; How to construct a newspaper bridge that will hold the most weight and is cost
efficient with the given materials?
My group s bridge held a lot more weight than I thought. Our group tried different ideas for our
prototype. At first, we wanted to only use straws for our bridge. We first tried to weave straws
together. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They were using all of the money but had a low cost effectiveness ratio. Since their bridge was very
heavy and was mostly made out of only newspaper their bridge was probably very weak because it
had no reinforcements. My group used straws to reinforce our rods the same way that steel bars are
used in concrete to reinforce it. Without the reinforcement, the beams would crack because of the load
causing the beam to be in tension. Their bridges were made with only paper with tape holding it
together. As compared to my group s bridge we tried our best to reinforce our bridge with straws. With
no reinforcements, their bridge collapsed under the weight put on it. Other groups tried to make a
bridge with the least amount of money hold the most weight. In the future, I would try to make a
bridge this way. An example of this would be the group of Tucker, Hilary, and Jack in G band. They
were runner up to us in the strength efficiency ratio with 1167 g held/1g of mass, but their bridge only
cost $14 and their cost effectiveness ratio was 1000g/$1. The amount of paper they used caused their
bridge to be a little bit heavier than ours. I find it surprising how their bridge held so much since it was
not like any of the other bridge. I think making a bridge this way would be more of a challenge in the

Why Is Emma Goldman Essay
Not many are strong enough to speak out. People like us usually aren t brave enough to argue towards
something, even though they strongly believe in it. Despite that, there is a woman, a fearless speaker,
who spoke up until her death to make the world a better place. Born on June 27th, 1869, Emma
Goldman is the leading figure of American feminism and an influential anarchist in history. From a
young age, she experienced poverty or noticed much violence towards women. This led to her
standing out as an anarchist she is known today. All her life was about conflicting with poverty,
freedom of speech, birth control, violence, women s rights, and government s military preparations.

In the 19th century, freedom of speech in America was still a dream. She was upset with the fact that
in America, a country which guaranteed free speech, officers armed with long clubs should invade an
orderly assembly . However, because of her passion towards her beliefs, Goldman faced threats from
the police to stop her talks. Nevertheless, Goldman never stopped expressing her thoughts in front of
the public. Eventually, she spent ten months in jail. Later on, after the assassination of President
McKinley, more people started to oppose or speak out. The government s actions towards trying to
suppress Goldman conversely led to many people supporting her right to freedom of speech. It was
after this when she started to constantly give speeches about this topic. Her speeches inspired Roger
Baldwin, a founder of the American Civil Liberties Union. Baldwin heard her speak in a lecture she
held and wrote in a letter, You always remain one of the chief inspirations of my life, for you aroused
in me a sense of what freedom really means . In 1903, Goldman joined the Free Speech League in

Approaching the second decade of the 21st century provides a fresh opportunity to think about kinds
of possible management. In this regard, the area of human resource management (HRM) has become
even more important to business, policymaking, and nations, including in the economically dynamic
Asia Pacific region. Most of the Asian economies had rapid growth rates for the past two to three
decades, although uneven from year to year, and were then hit by the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis.

practices by some), ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, in best practice thinking, a universal prescription is preferred (Boxall Purcell, 2003, p. 61).
One strand in the area is the development of lists of best practices. Among the most famous are those
of Pfeffer (1994, 1998), whose list of 16 (of relevance here included employment security, selectivity
in selection, promotion from within, high pay, incentive pay, wage compression, and training and skill
development), later narrowed to seven (of relevance here were employment security, selective and
sophisticated hiring, high compensation contingent on performance, extensive training and
development, reduction of status differentials, and sharing information self managed
teams/teamworking; see overviews of other lists in Boxall Purcell, 2003; Redman Wilkinson, 2006).
Some take a broad definition that best practices are those that can add value to the business. Others are
more specific and pinpoint certain practices in particular situations. For others, they are those present
in successful and/or high profile companies. Indeed, research on best practices including collective
issues of work organization and employee voice is rare (Boxall Purcell, 2003).
Recent studies (Tables 21.1 sorted by author and 21.2 by practice) typically include comprehensive
employee recruitment procedures, incentive compensation, performance management systems,
extensive employee training, and so

Reform to The Trinity River
Since the beginning of time, water has played a key role in societies all over the world. The earliest
recorded civilizations have all been found along large river valleys, such as, the Indus River in India

human beings around the globe, but also sustains the life of every living thing known to this Earth. All
of the major cities that we know today are surrounded by large river systems that supply its people
with the means to survive in that region. These rivers also link our different communities together and

but this project will connect the two parts of this city that have never had a direct route to the other.
Not only will these bridges join together two parts of Dallas, but it will also help to ease traffic along
the busy highways of this city. The river will also be transformed into an area where different
recreational activities will be held. The West Dallas Lake is long enough that boating, both
competitive and recreational, can be held there for all people. The West Dallas Lake amphitheater will

Comminuted Fracture Case Study
The fracture seen in the images is called a comminuted fracture and is seen on the proximal end of the

in the images provided the humeral head is seen with 2 fragments coming off of the medial and lateral
aspects. Due to the multiple fragments as well as the patients MOI I deemed this fracture comminuted.
The etiology for a comminuted fracture is described as an extreme pressure being exerted on a bone1.
This matches the MOI of the patient who claimed that she fell onto her shoulder after slipping on the
ice. The extreme pressure would be her entire body weight being exerted onto her humeral head

Other complications can be infection caused by the surgery2. Even before treatment some
complications of this fracture can be ripping of the skin, muscles and blood vessels causing it to
become an open fracture. Substantial nerve damage can also be a risk if the fractured fragments are
moved to much. Open fractures have a high risk of infection from the outer environment2. The
fracture in the included images is a closed fracture. With closed fractures there is less chance of initial
infection, it is very important that the patient follows the post operative instructions. By changing the
dressings on the wound with clean ones regularly will help avoid infections, and by resting the part
(e.g. keeping it still, avoid lifting with that arm, etc.) there is less chance of the hardware failing or
malunion of the individual fragments3. If in this case the patient were still experiencing pain follow up
x rays would then be ordered to check how the fracture looks and to check for complications. With
malunion you would be able to see if the humerus had bony deformities associated with malunion
where the different fracture fragments have not properly fused back with the humerus. If the follow up
x rays show that the fracture it not healing after 6 8 weeks (the average healing time for a humerus)
then more follow up x rays may also be ordered every month as this an indication of either delayed or

Why I Am A Father
Bang! I quickly sprang from my bed and bolted to the bottom of our staircase where my mom laid
after collapsing. Worried and confused I rushed to wake up my dad who eventually guided her up the
stairs and found out what happened. My mom had fainted at the top of our staircase after a
bradycardic episode. She was later taken to the hospital to have a loop recorder implanted to monitor
her heart. Eventually, it was identified that she needed a pacemaker at the age of 47.
From as early as I can remember, I have always had a passion for learning and education. Having a
father who was once high school chemistry teacher and a mother who was a nurse made for a fertile
upbringing in the sciences. Our dinner discussions ranged from hydrogen bonding and valence
electron shell repulsion theory to the changing of colostomy bags and other patient bodily functions,
the latter of which I sometimes grimaced at when pudding was planned later for dessert. Looking
back, I was very blessed to have a family that instilled many immensely important qualities into me as
a child.
Although medicine has always been close to me wanting to become a physician was not something I
simply decided overnight. After tagging along with my mom to see her cardiologist a couple of times I
slowly began to put together my love of science with a profession in which I could help people like
my mother. This eventually led to me actively pursuing medicine as a career. Before I started

Individuals living with HIV/AIDS vary across a wide and diverse spectrum of wealth, races, religions
and cultures, and many may benefit from the support interventions of a case manager. Case managers
can assist individuals in finding additional services and help to live longer and more comfortably
while living with the disease and reduce the risk of them falling through the cracks.
HIV/AIDS
We have been aware of HIV and AIDS since the 1970s (Miller, 2012), and though there have been
treatments and reduction in the number of people infected, the disease remains. The disease results in
death usually following opportunistic infections as a result of AIDS destruction of the immune system,
but thanks to modern medicine many people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this setting the case manager would work best using the role based case management model and
with their primary role to function as a generalist, This role, widely used in human service delivery,
focuses primarily on providing the services that can be delivered by a helper with knowledge and
skills applicable to a range of clients in various settings (Woodside, McClam, 2013. p 75 para 3);
following the role of generalist the case manager would likely take on the roles of counselor, care
coordinator, problem solver, and record keeper. Under the role of counselor and broker an intervention
strategy that could be implemented is for the case manager to meet with the individuals on their
caseload and after completing an assessment create a treatment plan that would help to resolve any
barriers that the individual may be facing that would hinder their ability to attend their medical
appointments and strict regimen of medications, the case manager would then continue to hold regular
meetings with their clients to ensure the individual treatment plan is being adhered to (Wohl, et al.
2011). The problem a case manager may see while trying to help provide services to people living
with HIV/AIDS under the model of role based manager is that the case manager may be working for
an agency with very limited resources which can then severely restrict the benefit of the program and
leave the case manager feeling frustrated and overwhelmed and the though there may be a wide array
of services that may be needed, the agency can only afford to focus on the cheapest. If the agency does
happen to be well funded then the benefits of role based case management model mean that the
individual will only have the one contact person to reach out to and allows for a better relationship to
develop which makes for a more effective case manager (Woodside, McClam,

Essay on Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA)
What is the FTAA
In 1994, the leaders of the thirty four democratic countries of the Western Hemisphere launched the
process of creating a Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). The FTAA will be established by 2010
with the aim of gradually eradicating barriers to trade and investment in the region. The final
characteristics of the FTAA will be determined through negotiations by government officials from the
thirty four participating countries. The trade issues that are presently under discussion are: market
access; investment; services; government procurement; dispute settlement; agriculture; intellectual
property; antidumping, subsidies and countervailing duties; and competition policy. Guiding
principles for these negotiations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The objectives and principles also mandate special consideration be given to the smaller, less
developed countries of the hemisphere. These provisions reflect both the unique challenges facing the
smaller, poorer countries and their influence in a process in which each country, regardless of size, in
effect has veto power.
With the FTAA negotiations still at an early stage, it would be useful to remember that the important
decisions in multilateral trade talks usually do not get made until the very end, frequently when it
appears as though the talks will fail to produce a significant agreement. This pattern is built into the
FTAA process as the negotiations are conducted as a single undertaking, and there is no agreement
until everything is decided.
The biggest slow down of the negotiations was the continued failure of the U.S. Congress to renew the
President Clinton s fast track authority, his ability to negotiate trade agreements and submit them to up
or down votes. The 1994 Miami Summit ended with assurances from President Clinton that he would
secure fast track authority and use it to gain Chile s admission to NAFTA. Without it, not only has
Chile s admission to NAFTA fallen by the wayside, but there are growing questions about U.S.
approval of the final FTAA agreement. Doubts concerning Washington s resolve and leadership have
clouded the negotiations and provided an opening for countries not enthusiastic

Is Arthur Dimmesdale The Greatest Sufferer Essay
Suffering is common in day to day life. From anyone getting their car stolen, to them stubbing their
toe, everyone suffers. What is uncommon though is a single event that leads to four people s
unimaginable suffering, and even leading to one of their deaths. This is seen in the book The Scarlet
Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, where there are four main characters. Hester Prynne is the main
character of the story and the person who connects all the other characters. Roger Chillingworth is
Hester s husband who they planned to go to America together but sent her first before he left to join
her. Arthur Dimmesdale is the town s minister who was directly involved in an affair with Hester and
himself. Finally, Pearl is the daughter of Hester s and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once Roger is aware of this information he becomes close to the minister, and in all his might for
revenge does whatever it takes to make Dimmesdale suffer even more: it came to be widely believed
that the Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale...was haunted either by Satan himself or by Satan s messenger
in the person of old Roger Chillingworth (Hawthorne 201). Throughout the book it refers to
Dimmesdale as the devil, simply because of the harsh acts he commits are truly evil. Most often it is
seen how Roger mentally tortures Dimmesdale in many different ways without Dimmesdale knowing
that Roger is aware of his secret. During the progression of the story, it is most obvious to note the
progression, or more appropriately the decline in Dimmesdale physical health. Often to punish himself
for his sin he would inflict pain or suffering by whip himself, or even fast for much too long of a time
that would lead to serious harm: He looked thinner and more worn down with worry...Either from his
failing health or for some other reason, his large dark eyes had a world of pain in their troubled and
melancholy depths (Hawthorne 177). Through the progression of the story Dimmesdale s health, or
the lack thereof, is directly shown from his physical appearance. The physical suffering of
Dimmesdale is one that is most apparent as the man begins struggling to walk to collapsing in the
arms of Hester right before he dies. Arthur

Life In The Iron Mills And The Simplification Of Black...
Life in the Iron Mills the Simplification of Black Suffering.
Rebecca Harding Davis Life in the Iron Mills illustrates class conflict and the exploitative nature of
American industrialization. It has been regarded as one of the first notable examples of American
realism that portrayed the burdens of industrial factory workers. Davis uses slavery comparisons
throughout the novella, this rhetoric threatens the potency of her work.
Class disparities serve to isolate the impoverished from the bourgeois, this alienation exists because of
class but Davis seeks to create this division by race. For example Hugh is worn down and blackened
by his hard labor.
This comparison becomes problematic when she equates the mill workers position with that of chattel
slaves. By doing so she ignores the realities of both struggles, Davis rhetoric could lead some to
believe that the plight of mill workers is even more severe than slavery.
Though in reality the two only share a few similarities, factory work was far less severe than chattel
slavery that lasted over two centuries.
Davis used this comparison since she was able to witness the atrocities of both chattel and wage
slavery during her lifetime. The use of a slavery comparison would be understood by readers since
abolition was controversial at the time Iron Mills was published.
Yet black suffering is only a device to describe the main subject of white mill workers, she
inaccurately depicts chattel slavery and downplays

On the 7th of April, I had the pleasure of attending a music recital performed by Indiana State student
Yurie Uto. The official title of the performance was simply Senior Recitle . Throughout the recital,
Ms. Uto played six musical pieces while masterfully using the French horn. All of the songs were
purely instrumental and she was also accompanied by a grand piano, guitar, and other French horns
during the performance. Although she seemed slightly nervous early on, by the end of the night, Ms.
Uto seemed undaunted as she played her instrument with masterful skill. The venue utilized for the
performance was the Recital Hall at Indiana State University. Which, in my opinion, was a great
choice for its convenient size and impressive ability to clearly project the music to fully benefit the
ears of the audience. For clothing, Ms. Uto dawned formal attire while her accompanying performers
varied from formal to casual. The programs that were handed out gave historical information on each
piece of music that was played. With information on when it was made and why some pieces were

they change the oil to run diagnostic checks in their free check ups. Truck mechanics have many jobs

Forecasting Is A Critical Function Of Revenue Management...
Background
Forecasting is a critical function of revenue management and strategical planning for businesses. With
the help of historical information, forecasting allows businesses to anticipate changing market trends,
predict product demand and manage the costs of inventory (Lambert, 2011). While forecasting has
many applications and is utilized in numerous trades, this research focuses on forecasting within the
airline industry. In this context, the emphasis is on forecasting to optimize profit, by anticipating
demand and adjusting capacity needs and prices accordingly.

This analysis will propose different alternatives to minimize forecasting errors, while reducing
operational costs and maximizing profits.
Solution#1: Utilizing a global distribution system (GDS) that provides accurate and real time data
could enable airlines to cut costs by planning and allocating resources more efficiently. A GDS is
basically a reservation system that connects and collects data from airlines, hotels and other travel
service reservation systems. One of such system is SABRE (Semi Automatic Business Research
Environment), which among the many functions is capable of calculating oil prices, the most efficient
routes for flights, as well as estimating last minute available seating on flights, tourism trends,
determining the best size of the aircraft to use for specific routes, and how much freight to put on a
flight. The use of a system like SABRE could help reduce the costs of flying airplanes with empty
seats, maximize cargo capacity on each flight, calculate and adjust pricing according to cost such as
oil prices, reduce downtime and improve passenger satisfaction through more frequent on time
arrivals and departures. It could also improve the efficiency of maintenance operations by recording
and transmitting data about performance issues while the aircraft is still in the air. By identifying the

Indian Women s Role In The Fur Trade Society
The reading that I will respond to will be the from the second week reading, which is about the role of
the native women in the fur trade society. The story intrigued me, since the story is about the role of
woman and it is a rather controversial topic. The role of woman was rather unclear in the past with the
men dominate all the power ladder inside the society. It is not a surprise that native woman did not get
any credit at all for their hard work as they are viewed as workforce, a piece of chess moved by the
men to benefit themselves. The author of the book is trying to help the women to regain their credit in
the society. Understanding history will not be complete with only the help from the men s perspective,
it requires perspective from both genders and this idea is being strongly grasped by the author to prove
that sexual difference makes us to understand the history as a whole.
For starter, the reading claimed that the fur trade has been viewed as an all male affair, but new
research has indicated that Indian woman played a rather significant role in this trade. This is not a

Epic Poetry and Beowulf Pg
Epic poems have a unique set of characteristics that distinguish them from just an ordinary poem. An
epic poem must contain a hero that is male, noble, and of importance to society who gives long formal
speeches and travels over a vast setting. In the epic poem, Beowulf, the reader can see distinct Anglo
Saxon political, economic, and religious values in the actions of the characters and the things
happening around them. Wealth in the Anglo Saxon society, as seen in Beowulf, was used as a means
of reparations, rewards, and political standings. One can also tell that the Anglo Saxons where in a
state of limbo between Christian and Pagan beliefs because of the ideas expressed by the hero and his
colleagues in Beowulf. The political standings ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Paganism can also be found during the poem when the narrator discusses fate, the nonexistence of an
afterlife, and the concept of fate. Before entering the dragons tower Beowulf tells his followers that he
will fight until fate decides which of us [he or the dragon] wins (Beowulf pg. 53). Fate is only a belief
in Pagan religion; Christians don t believe in a predetermined destiny. When Beowulf is fighting the
dragon and he begins to sense defeat he reflects on a journey into darkness that all men must make, as
death ends their few brief hours on earth. (Beowulf pg.54). This journey into darkness alerts the reader
that Beowulf believes that his only life is here on earth and will venture on to darkness with no
afterlife. Christians believe that there is a life after death in heaven as opposed to Pagans who believe
in death as an end of existence.
Scattered in the poem the reader can find literary devices including stock epithets, kennings,
alliteration, allusions, hyperbole, and imagery. Stock epithets are adjectives that point out a special
trait of a character. One example of a stock epithet can be found in line 324 of Beowulf when Grendel
is described as being a sin stained demon (Beowulf pg. 42). A kenning is a poetic synonym found in
Germanic poems as seen when Beowulf is called the noble protector of all seamen (Beowulf pg.50).
Alliteration is the repetition of

The Development Of Bilingual Literacy Practices
During Phase 2, Moore and MacDonald focused their research on this research question: How is Halq
eméylem being revitalized within a British Columbia Aboriginal Head Start program where
Aboriginal teachers of the language are not themselves fluent in the language of instruction? In order
to answer this question, the researchers performed a series of observations and video recording over a
period of one year. This observations took place during various community events. The discussion of
the findings develops through a framework to understand the development of bilingual literacy
practices in a minoritized context. The authors found a blend of traditional Aboriginal practices with
contemporary teaching methodology. Elders and parents re appropriate their own ancestral language,
and reshaped the language classroom into a multilingual space for learning. Particular literacy
practices were found in the Stó:lō Head Start program where Halq eméylem was taught by reading
and attending the writing code while signing. These practices were enforced by aiming the parents to
reinforce Halq eméylem language and literacy practices at home. The authors conclude by stating the
importance of this study by challenging the existing hierarchies of knowledge and knowledge creation
through multiple languages wherever they occur and suggests directions in which we might
understand and make use of languages and multiple literacies as powerful resources for further

Capital gains are effectively just money earned for having money in the first place and investing it

applies to money received from index funds, which are a type of mutual fund with a portfolio
constructed to match or track the components of a market index (CITE). This means that by depositing
money into an index fund, that money is invested in a wide variety high performing companies. Then,
when that money is withdrawn, the owner receives capital gains, just like an individual investor

For comparison, the poorest 50% of Americans paid a total of $34 billion in taxes in 2013. Taxing
capital gains as if it were normal income would remove the tool that the rich and powerful use to
become even more rich and powerful, as well as inject billions of into public projects. Therefore, it
would go far in solving the issue of wealth inequality that we face today. Fortunately, this issue is very
simple to solve. All that is required is for the federal government to treat capital gains as normal
income. Subsequently, public projects and systems that are currently suffering with little money,
would receive an incredible boost. However, there is still opposition to these ideas among wealthy
Americans, Congressmen, and voters. Several arguments are used in opposition to some of the
policies that have been suggested in this paper, and in the next few paragraphs, I will refute the
common opponents. The first of these opposing viewpoints

Research Paper On Marfan Syndrome
Marfan syndrome is a genetic disorder. A mutation, or change, in the gene that controls how the body
makes fibrillin causes Marfan syndrome. Fibrillin is a protein that plays a major role in your body s
connective tissue. Most people who have Marfan syndrome inherit it from their parents. If you have
the condition, you have a 50 percent chance of passing the altered gene to each of your children.
Sometimes Marfan syndrome isn t inherited. The mutation in the fibrillin gene occurs in the egg or
sperm cells. If a child is conceived, the altered gene may be passed on to the child. The risk of that
child s brothers or sisters having Marfan syndrome is low.Marfan syndrome has no cure. However,
treatments can help delay or prevent complications, especially

The Whole Issue Of Christianity
Introduction
The whole issue of Christianity begins with the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. This large character
leaves an infinite number of lessons to be entrusted to the Apostles for preach and teach the people.
This whole process is going to have much success and also is going to have their lowest, as being the
persecutions, who did not cease to Christians to practice their religion freely. During all these
sufferings also appear characters with power, which defend Christians and at the end were to succeed
in overcoming and completely eliminate the persecution against them. Then appear Christian
authorities that cause the Christianity is considered as the official religion of the empire.

Although, Jesus did not think in a policy rebellion only in moral and spiritual release. Many Jews
become disillusioned and turned against him. Jesus was convicted and handed over to the Roman
authorities. The procurator Pontius Pilate did die on the cross.
After the death of Jesus, the Apostles continued the preaching of his doctrine. Most of them lived in
Jerusalem, and made his preaching among the inhabitants of Palestine. The first converts Christians
were, therefore, of Jewish origin. They were called Nazarenes, believers in the Nazarene Jesus. Very
soon, the Christianity began to spread among the Gentiles, between those who were not Jews. (The
Jews used to call gentiles to all those who were not of their race and religion.) The main preacher of
Christianity among the Gentiles, was St Paul and therefore tends to be called the apostle of the
gentiles. He was a Jew, born in Tarsus, Asia Minor, and initially had persecuted viciously to
Christians, but then converted to the new creed and devoted his life to propagate the faith that

The Marine Corps And The Corps
In recent history, the Marine Corps offered only limited options to the combatant commander to
respond to crises. This response capability was usually resident within the Marine Expeditionary Unit
in the form of noncombatant evacuation operations, foreign humanitarian assistance, and embassy
reinforcement. However, as the global climate has shifted from a Cold War, or even OIF I, paradigm
to one of small conflicts or crises of short duration. Within this context the Marine Corps continues to
seek to match its unique capability sets to the dynamic challenges of the 21st century, developing
concepts such as Expeditionary Force 21, which seeks to provide options for contingencies through
globally dispersed assets and capabilities. The Marine Corps ability to execute in such an environment
hinges on the MAGTF s center of gravity, the Aviation Combat Element (ACE), and specifically its
game changer , the MV 22 Osprey. The unique capabilities of this aircraft, especially when coupled
with the refueling capability of the C 130, truly provide a unique and efficient method to flow forces
over distances inconceivable merely a generation ago. In this instance, the aircraft is the innovation:
determining to apply a unique capability in regions of instability is simply logical. However, the
semantics of what qualifies innovation is inconsequential. Marines, deployed as a self contained
package, with all of their associated things, can rapidly respond to crisis, bridge gaps between

Perception In The Necklace
The Necklace depicts a tale about a woman named Madame Mathilde Loisel and her spouse. Madame
Mathilde Loisel has always been under the illusion that she was of high social standings and held
possession over expensive material, all because of her beauty, but this was obviously all her
imagination and she had nothing. She gets married to a poor clerk who tries his very best to keep her
happy. One evening he comes home with an invitation to a ball that he worked hard to attain. He gives
up his savings for a gun in order to fulfil his partner s complaints of buying a fancy dress gown for the
ball as she does not have one. She then asks her wealthier friend, Madame Forestier, to lend her an
article of jewellery to go with her dress. After a night ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Madame Mathilde Loise s biggest mistake was following her husband s order to lie instead of telling
her friend the truth, that she had lost the necklace. You must write to your friend, he said, that you
have broken the clasp of her necklace and that you are having it mended. That will give us time to turn
round. To speak the truth takes a lot of courage, it may also hurt an individual but to prolong telling
the truth is the act of avoiding the inevitable because the truth always comes out. To speak the truth is
to set oneself free as they are not tied to any sense of guilt, they can move on with their lives and not
worry about the consequences. This one act of hiding the truth had essentially ruined Madame
Mathilde Loise and her husband s life, there could have been many alternate roads that the pair could
have taken, had they told the truth to Madame Forestier, they would not have had to sacrifice ten years
of their lives for an artificial necklace that they deemed as real diamond. I suppose they both learnt
from their mistakes and on their expedition they taught me that the truth always prevails as it is one of
the most powerful attributes of

Mcmullen Case Summary
McMullen is not discharged from the contract to build the apartment house. McMullen is not
discharged from the contract because the change of law did not prohibit the construc¬tion of the
building it just made it more expensive to build. Moreover, this issue doesn t come within the rule of
law that allows for a contract to be discharged. The contract is still enforceable because it s still
possible to build the apartment house it s just more expensive than what was originally thought and
agreed upon in the contract. The contract would only be discharged if it was impossible to perform but
in this case it s still possible to perform the contract. McMullen still must perform the contract even
though it s more expensive than the price that they agreed on in the contract. ... Show more content on

Koplik s defense was valid because his obligation to pay the $50,000 had been discharged by the
execution of the new agreement between Fast Foods Inc. and American Bank. Additionally, Fast

Bank agreed to a new schedule of payments to be made by Fast Foods. The new agreement did not
involve Koplik because he was discharged from the debt. American Bank should be suing Fast Food
Inc. instead of Koplik. Koplik s defense was valid. 5. Yes the contract was terminated because the
contract specifically stated that the sales transaction was to be completed in 90 days. The language is
very clear and unequivocal. Moreover, the contract didn t need to say that time is of the essence . In
addition, it could easily be implied that time was of the essence in the contract because the Tinchers
wanted the sales transaction to be completed in 90 days. Moreover, Creasy already knew that time was
of the essence when she requested an extension of time to buy the land. The contract was definitely

Descriptive Essay On A Golden Retriever
A golden retriever for a companion is an excellent choice because they are loyal and faithful friends.
In general, dogs are always happy to see you, even when you are upset or in a dark time. Even if the
owner is mad at them, they will try to make you forgive them by giving you lots of kisses and curling
up next to you. They will also keep close when you start walking, so you are always protected by
them. Since a golden retriever is a field bred dog, they are very smart and can help you go get things
and drag items where you need them. Also it is easy to find a golden retriever in a field because their
golden to reddish fur color stands out against the green grass or the bluish green of pool/ocean water.
Megan and her dog were just walking through a large grassland like field when a small blue house
came into view. It is quite a lonely little building with a white picket fence surrounding the front yard
and nothing is in sight around it but green grass and a long, narrow beach about five miles away. The
house looked very tiny, even standing at the gate in front. It was about the size of a classroom with
two doors and three windows. The backyard was enormous though, with at least 100 yards in each
direction from the house, and it had a pond about 30 feet wide and 60 feet long in the corner that was
frozen over, considering that it was a moderately cold day. Since the cold was getting to Megan and
Ginger a little, they decided to go inside the house, hoping it would be

The Decline Of Western Civilization III, By Keith Morris
Disturbing. That is the word that kept coming to my mind while watching The Decline of Western
Civilization III . In the beginning of the movie, Keith Morris, a member of a band called Black Fly,
cities lyrics to one of his songs which read All the people look the same, don t they know they re so
damn lame . I do not know much about the Punk culture aside from our readings and this week s
movie. But based on the quote by Keith Morris and what I observed in the movie, I don t see how the
Punk culture, or the way they live their lives, to be a resistance to the mainstream social and cultural
hierarchy. Yes it is different, and no, I do not understand it. To me, and possibly a majority of this
class, it may appear that the Punks are resisting the mainstream and social and cultural hierarchy, but
in reality they are just doing what they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nobody can really force someone to get a job. Nobody can force you to dress a certain way or do your

live like this and for the most part seem to be okay with it. In what way is this any different than
someone who wants to sell drugs their whole life and not work? What about members of organized
crime groups who are involved in a various illegal activities for financial gain in which they support
their livelihood on? In the movie, the one Punk talked about robbing or stealing to get money. Outside

Beryl Markham s West With The Night
West with the Night is an autobiography by Beryl Markham, who is a pilot is Africa. In her book she
juxtaposes Africa and London and then extends that juxtaposition to stand for the universal feelings of
boredom and freedom. She chooses events from her job that highlight the difference between Africa
and London to characterize herself as exotic and unique. She opens this excerpt by telling the story of
transporting life saving oxygen to a dying old man. By choosing to reveal to us important and
dangerous events from her job she reveals that she thinks of herself as adventurous, out of the box,
and a hero.
In the beginning of this excerpt she compares her life in Africa where she claims she was unable to
discuss the boredom of being alive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We know from her description of London that she abhors being bored and she suggests that boredom
is tied to loneliness in her description of her life in Africa. In spite of this she confesses that Night
flying over charted country by aid of instruments and radio guidance can still be a lonely business, but
to fly in unbroken darkness without even the cold companionship of a pair of earphones or the
knowledge that somewhere ahead are lights and life and a well marked airport is something more than
just lonely. The experience of that something that is more than just lonely appears to be the thing that
she dislikes most about her job but she doesn t hesitate to night fly if someone should require her
assistance. She doesn t give any mind to the physical danger that is a part of flying an airplane at night
instead her only concern is whether or not she will be bored. Clearly for Markham her greatest fear is
not death but it is the experience of being under stimulated. It is clear from her description of her job
that countless times she has gone up into that airplane anyways and faced her worst fear. In doing so
Markham shows herself to be someone who is willing to sacrifice herself to help someone

Brain Controlled Artificial Legs
BRAIN CONTROLLED ARTIFICIAL LEGS
ABSTRACT:
This paper describes a brain controlled robotic leg which is designed to perform the normal operations
of a human leg. After implanting this leg in a human, the leg can be controlled with the help of user s
brain signals alone. This leg behaves similar to a normal human leg and it can perform operation like
walking, running, climbing stairs etc. The entire system is controlled with the help of advanced
microcontrollers and digital signal processors. The signals are taken out from the human brain with
the help of electroencephalography technique. The person can perform operations like walking,
running etc just by their thought. This system will be very much suitable for those who lost their ...

The following figure shows the different types of waves and also the mental state of the per son.
Those waves usually vary from a frequency of 1Hz to 40 HZ. Electrode cap is placed in the scalp of
the person. The signals taken out from the human brain will be in the range of mV and µV. Hence they
are fed to an amplifier. Then it is sent to a Analog to Digital Converter to convert the analog brain
signals in to digital form. Then it is sent to a signal processor where parameter extraction, pattern
classification and pattern identification are done. These digital signals are fed as input to
microcontroller unit. The last four units (Amplifier, Signal Processor, Analog to Digital Converter and
Microcontroller Unit) are placed inside the artificial leg. The output of the microcontroller unit is fed
to the driving circuit. Let us see about these blocks in detail.
Electrode Cap: a person wears an electrode cap. These electrode caps contains electrodes which are
placed on the skull in an arrangement called 10 20 system, a placement scheme devised by the interna

English As An Official Language Essay
Considering the Issues
Mary Carnahan
GO 200: Geography
May 17, 2016
Introduction
After reading Geography Public Policy An Official U.S. Language found on page 168, chapter six. I
well answering these three questions found under Considering the Issues .
1. Do you think that the use of multiple languages represents a threat to America s cultural unity? Or,
do you think making English the official language might divide its citizens and damage its legacy of
tolerance and diversity?
2. Do you believe that immigrant children would learn English faster if bilingual classes were reduced
and immersion in English were more complete? Or, do you think that a slower pace of English
acquisition is acceptable if subject matter comprehension and cultural self esteem are enhanced?
3. Do you think Official English laws inflame prejudice against immigrants or provide all newcomers
with a common standard of admission to the country s political and cultural mainstream?

Do you think Official English laws inflame prejudice against immigrants or provide all newcomers
with a common standard of admission to the country s political and cultural mainstream? That s a
good question because I was going to say if you go to another country to live; like say, Mexico, you
should learn their language because if you don t you are going to be lost in that country but Mexico
isn t going to force you to learn their language. I don t think the United States should not force
immigrates to learn English but if they are going to live, work and get out government benefits then
yes thy should be taught

  • 2. Snare Drum Research Paper When most people think of a drum line they categorize it all as drums , but what they don t know is that each drum, although similar, have their own role. The most known drums, the snare and the bass, have many similarities, but they are also different in many ways. The bass drum and snare drum are very structurally similar. Both have a cylindrically shaped shell and two tightly stretched drum heads. The shell of the drum is usually made of wood such as poplar, birch, or maple that is veneered. Then a final clear, hard, top coat protectant covering. They also have lugs that span the length of the shell to keep the drum heads at the right pitch. The snare drum and bass drum are both percussion instruments. The word percussion means, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The drumline comes onto the field as a group and given a visual effect position of a front to middle ensemble. This position shows off the massive sound produced from a small group of drums and quick flying stick work. The drummers wear a harness to be able to carry their drum while keeping in step with the group. Although the snare drum and bass drum have some similarities, their differences are more apparent. How the bass and snare drums are played is quite opposite. The drum head of a snare sits horizontally, while the heads of a bass drum sit vertically. With the snare drum wooden sticks are used to produce the strong cracking sound when hitting the head. On a bass drum cushion tipped mallets are hit on either side of the drum to make its booming sound. The snare and bass drum have very different and distinct sounds. The snare drum is mainly rhythm based and plays sharp, quick sounds, while the bass drum is used to keep the beat and plays longer, sustained notes. This is because the snare drum head is stretched tighter than the bass head and the snare drum has a set of metal springs stretched across the bottom head. Another big difference is that the snare drum can only play one pitch, while the bass drum usually plays in a line with drums of many sizes and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Both free trade and fair trade have advantages and disadvantages. The researchers in Cohort 4 have established a viewpoint regarding fair trade and free trade. Considering the research that the cohort has conducted, they are in opposition to free trade. The terms free and fair trade sometimes go hand in hand but there are distinct differences between the two. The month of October is themed Every Purchase Matters for Fair Trade USA. These events raise understanding and knowledge of the Fair Trade movement with social, economic, and environmental empowerment for the farming population and consumers all across the globe (Economics, 2010). In Addition to Fair Trade USA, Cohort 4 believes that the general American population does not support free trade as well. NBC news and Wall Street Journal did a poll and the results were interesting. Sixty nine percent of Americans believe that free trade agreements with other countries have cost jobs in the United States. While eighteen percent believe that they have created jobs (Harwood). Everyone s goals and ambitions for the future vary from one to the next, yet each person shares a common bond, each hope for their own personal happiness. The search of the truth and the power it produces cause internal conflict during one s pursuit of this so called happiness. The search for this is not made without obstacles along the way. In Henrik Isben s Hedda Gabler, he masterfully portrays the main character, Hedda, as neither a monster nor a saint . . . [she] is simply a tragic character who is destroyed by the unharmonious and irreconciliable contrasts in her own character. Ibsen first expressed Hedda s emotional sterility by showing how she is unable to reciprocate in a relationship. Hedda s lack of freedom to act independently in the society that caused her to believe that she would find an answer in manipulation causes her to come face to face with reality. She is forced to realize that her efforts are futile and her manipulation is only hurting herself. Like a young child, she can only receive without knowing how to give in return. This highly intense interest with the lives of others is another aspect of her emotionally empty life. While at the same time of investigating and analyzing other people s lives is one way for Hedda to gain some understanding of her own unsatisfied self, she ultimately reveals that she herself is very frail, fragile, and self centered. It is this indeed that puts Hedda on her path to a tragic destruction, a path that is being taken rather quickly. Another way in which Isben displays her thirst for more in her life is when Hedda burns the manuscript. Hedda feels that somehow destroying something that she should have been able to create in the first place will make her feel ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although the Articles of the Confederation became known as the United States first written constitution, it did not became ratified by all states until after four years after it was adopted and only lasted for 12 years until it was later replaced with the Constitution we used today. The Articles did set a foundation for our modern day constitution but in its early stages posed serious problems that lead to the drafting of a new constitution. Some of those problems included vesting the entire central government within just Congress (lack of Executive, and Judicial Branch), giving central government very limited power on how it handled state to state affair, and lack of national army because the army was composed of state militias. His works were compelling, especially, when it comes to his strong political beliefs. He is considered one of the most widely admired English language essayists of the twentieth century. As Elkins points out, he is best known for the two novels that were written toward the end of his life: the anti utopian political allegory Animal Farm and the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty Four (New World Encyclopedia). Those at the top of the hierarchy had the power to dominate, and to impose their will upon those at the bottom. (Elkins). In spite of his obvious intelligence and offers of scholarships, Orwell chose not to continue his education at a university. Instead, he joined the Indian Imperial Police in Burma. He felt that he was being called to follow in the footsteps of many family members. For several years, he was viewed as an impeccable community servant. He accepted a great deal of responsibility for someone of such a young age. The desire to become a writer continued to weigh heavily on his heart, and he left his job as a police officer after just five years. He had the support of his fiance Eileen, and they later married in 1936. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, it was at this time that Orwell began to search for repentance for the guilt that he felt when he finally realized just how poorly the Burmese were treated by Britain. He felt that the barriers of race and caste had prevented his mingling with the Burmese, and he thought that he could expiate some of his guilt by immersing himself in the life of the ... I was acually watching this television show the other day and on it, there was a little boy watching T.V. when a commercial for a stuffed animal came on. Instead of hearing what the commercial was actually saying, all it showed was the stuffed animal trying to convince the little boy to get his parents to buy it. The little boy then, would not stop asking his parents until they finally got it for him. So maybe, it s not just the ads fault, it could be also the way most parents comply when their child begs for something. • 11. Sahel Climate The Sahel is an area in Africa which suffers droughts and it is hard to grow crops due to the hot climate. Seasonal shifts there lead to decreased rainfall and the drought tolerant maize helps farmers adapt to climate change. The Sahel is the transition zone in Africa. It has a great typical ecoclimatic and biogeographic reflection of a semi arid climate. It is located between the Sahara to the north and the Sudanian Savanna which was historically called the Sudan region to the south.[1] The Sahel crosses the south central latitudes of Northern Africa between the Atlantic Ocean and the Red Sea. And the Sahel has a tropical, hot steppe climate which means the climate there is typically hot, sunny, dry and there are winds all year long. The cause of the hot weather is that the Sahel has a high to very high sunshine duration year round while the Sahel is near the equator. It has annual sunshine duration between 2,700 hours which is more than about 61% of the daylight hours on other places and 3,500 hours which is more than 79% of the daylight hours. The sunshine duration in the Sahel approaches desert levels, and is comparable to that in the Arabian Desert, even though the Sahel is only a steppe and not a desert. Also the cloud cover of the Sahel is low to very low.[2] Because of the above reasons, the climate is generally hot, with unreliable rains across different seasons. Without the reinforcement, the beams would crack because of the load causing the beam to be in tension. Their bridges were made with only paper with tape holding it together. As compared to my group s bridge we tried our best to reinforce our bridge with straws. With no reinforcements, their bridge collapsed under the weight put on it. Other groups tried to make a bridge with the least amount of money hold the most weight. In the future, I would try to make a bridge this way. An example of this would be the group of Tucker, Hilary, and Jack in G band. From a young age, she experienced poverty or noticed much violence towards women. This led to her standing out as an anarchist she is known today. Eventually, she spent ten months in jail. Later on, after the assassination of President McKinley, more people started to oppose or speak out. The government s actions towards trying to suppress Goldman conversely led to many people supporting her right to freedom of speech. It was after this when she started to constantly give speeches about this topic. Her speeches inspired Roger Baldwin, a founder of the American Civil Liberties Union. In this regard, the area of human resource management (HRM) has become even more important to business, policymaking, and nations, including in the economically dynamic Asia Pacific region. Most of the Asian economies had rapid growth rates for the past two to three decades, although uneven from year to year, and were then hit by the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. Thus, in best practice thinking, a universal prescription is preferred (Boxall Purcell, 2003, p. 61). One strand in the area is the development of lists of best practices. Among the most famous are those of Pfeffer (1994, 1998), whose list of 16 (of relevance here included employment security, selectivity in selection, promotion from within, high pay, incentive pay, wage compression, and training and skill development), later narrowed to seven (of relevance here were employment security, selective and sophisticated hiring, high compensation contingent on performance, extensive training and development, reduction of status differentials, and sharing information self managed teams/teamworking; see overviews of other lists in Boxall Purcell, 2003; Redman Wilkinson, 2006). Some take a broad definition that best practices are those that can add value to the business. Others are more specific and pinpoint certain practices in particular situations. For others, they are those present in successful and/or high profile companies. Indeed, research on best practices including collective issues of work organization and employee voice is rare (Boxall Purcell, 2003). Due to the multiple fragments as well as the patients MOI I deemed this fracture comminuted. The etiology for a comminuted fracture is described as an extreme pressure being exerted on a bone1. Other complications can be infection caused by the surgery2. Even before treatment some complications of this fracture can be ripping of the skin, muscles and blood vessels causing it to become an open fracture. Substantial nerve damage can also be a risk if the fractured fragments are moved to much. Open fractures have a high risk of infection from the outer environment2. The fracture in the included images is a closed fracture. With closed fractures there is less chance of initial infection, it is very important that the patient follows the post operative instructions. By changing the dressings on the wound with clean ones regularly will help avoid infections, and by resting the part (e.g. keeping it still, avoid lifting with that arm, etc.) there is less chance of the hardware failing or malunion of the individual fragments3. If in this case the patient were still experiencing pain follow up x rays would then be ordered to check how the fracture looks and to check for complications. With malunion you would be able to see if the humerus had bony deformities associated with malunion where the different fracture fragments have not properly fused back with the humerus. Worried and confused I rushed to wake up my dad who eventually guided her up the stairs and found out what happened. My mom had fainted at the top of our staircase after a bradycardic episode. She was later taken to the hospital to have a loop recorder implanted to monitor her heart. Eventually, it was identified that she needed a pacemaker at the age of 47. From as early as I can remember, I have always had a passion for learning and education. Our dinner discussions ranged from hydrogen bonding and valence electron shell repulsion theory to the changing of colostomy bags and other patient bodily functions, the latter of which I sometimes grimaced at when pudding was planned later for dessert. In this setting the case manager would work best using the role based case management model and with their primary role to function as a generalist, This role, widely used in human service delivery, focuses primarily on providing the services that can be delivered by a helper with knowledge and skills applicable to a range of clients in various settings (Woodside, McClam, 2013. p 75 para 3); following the role of generalist the case manager would likely take on the roles of counselor, care coordinator, problem solver, and record keeper. Under the role of counselor and broker an intervention strategy that could be implemented is for the case manager to meet with the individuals on their caseload and after completing an assessment create a treatment plan that would help to resolve any barriers that the individual may be facing that would hinder their ability to attend their medical appointments and strict regimen of medications, the case manager would then continue to hold regular meetings with their clients to ensure the individual treatment plan is being adhered to (Wohl, et al. 2011). The problem a case manager may see while trying to help provide services to people living with HIV/AIDS under the model of role based manager is that the case manager may be working for an agency with very limited resources which can then severely restrict the benefit of the program and leave the case manager feeling frustrated and overwhelmed and the though there may be a wide array of services that may be needed, the agency can only afford to focus on the cheapest. With the FTAA negotiations still at an early stage, it would be useful to remember that the important decisions in multilateral trade talks usually do not get made until the very end, frequently when it appears as though the talks will fail to produce a significant agreement. This pattern is built into the FTAA process as the negotiations are conducted as a single undertaking, and there is no agreement until everything is decided. The biggest slow down of the negotiations was the continued failure of the U.S. Congress to renew the President Clinton s fast track authority, his ability to negotiate trade agreements and submit them to up or down votes. The 1994 Miami Summit ended with assurances from President Clinton that he would secure fast track authority and use it to gain Chile s admission to NAFTA. • 25. Life In The Iron Mills And The Simplification Of Black... Life in the Iron Mills the Simplification of Black Suffering. Rebecca Harding Davis Life in the Iron Mills illustrates class conflict and the exploitative nature of American industrialization. It has been regarded as one of the first notable examples of American realism that portrayed the burdens of industrial factory workers. Davis uses slavery comparisons throughout the novella, this rhetoric threatens the potency of her work. Class disparities serve to isolate the impoverished from the bourgeois, this alienation exists because of class but Davis seeks to create this division by race. For example Hugh is worn down and blackened by his hard labor. This comparison becomes problematic when she equates the mill workers position with that of chattel slaves. By doing so she ignores the realities of both struggles, Davis rhetoric could lead some to believe that the plight of mill workers is even more severe than slavery. Though in reality the two only share a few similarities, factory work was far less severe than chattel slavery that lasted over two centuries. Davis used this comparison since she was able to witness the atrocities of both chattel and wage slavery during her lifetime. The use of a slavery comparison would be understood by readers since abolition was controversial at the time Iron Mills was published. Yet black suffering is only a device to describe the main subject of white mill workers, she inaccurately depicts chattel slavery and downplays ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. Epic Poetry and Beowulf Pg Epic poems have a unique set of characteristics that distinguish them from just an ordinary poem. An epic poem must contain a hero that is male, noble, and of importance to society who gives long formal speeches and travels over a vast setting. In the epic poem, Beowulf, the reader can see distinct Anglo Saxon political, economic, and religious values in the actions of the characters and the things happening around them. Wealth in the Anglo Saxon society, as seen in Beowulf, was used as a means of reparations, rewards, and political standings. One can also tell that the Anglo Saxons where in a state of limbo between Christian and Pagan beliefs because of the ideas expressed by the hero and his colleagues in Beowulf. The political standings ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Paganism can also be found during the poem when the narrator discusses fate, the nonexistence of an afterlife, and the concept of fate. Before entering the dragons tower Beowulf tells his followers that he will fight until fate decides which of us [he or the dragon] wins (Beowulf pg. 53). Fate is only a belief in Pagan religion; Christians don t believe in a predetermined destiny. When Beowulf is fighting the dragon and he begins to sense defeat he reflects on a journey into darkness that all men must make, as death ends their few brief hours on earth. (Beowulf pg.54). This journey into darkness alerts the reader that Beowulf believes that his only life is here on earth and will venture on to darkness with no afterlife. Christians believe that there is a life after death in heaven as opposed to Pagans who believe in death as an end of existence. Scattered in the poem the reader can find literary devices including stock epithets, kennings, alliteration, allusions, hyperbole, and imagery. Stock epithets are adjectives that point out a special trait of a character. One example of a stock epithet can be found in line 324 of Beowulf when Grendel is described as being a sin stained demon (Beowulf pg. 42). A kenning is a poetic synonym found in Germanic poems as seen when Beowulf is called the noble protector of all seamen (Beowulf pg.50). Alliteration is the repetition of ... • 37. The Development Of Bilingual Literacy Practices During Phase 2, Moore and MacDonald focused their research on this research question: How is Halq eméylem being revitalized within a British Columbia Aboriginal Head Start program where Aboriginal teachers of the language are not themselves fluent in the language of instruction? In order to answer this question, the researchers performed a series of observations and video recording over a period of one year. This observations took place during various community events. The discussion of the findings develops through a framework to understand the development of bilingual literacy practices in a minoritized context. The authors found a blend of traditional Aboriginal practices with contemporary teaching methodology. Elders and parents re appropriate their own ancestral language, and reshaped the language classroom into a multilingual space for learning. Particular literacy practices were found in the Stó:lō Head Start program where Halq eméylem was taught by reading and attending the writing code while signing. These practices were enforced by aiming the parents to reinforce Halq eméylem language and literacy practices at home. The authors conclude by stating the importance of this study by challenging the existing hierarchies of knowledge and knowledge creation through multiple languages wherever they occur and suggests directions in which we might understand and make use of languages and multiple literacies as powerful resources for further learning and as ways to ... • 39. The Benefits Of Capital Gains And The Values Of Money Capital gains are effectively just money earned for having money in the first place and investing it wisely. Capital gains are realized once an investor sells their stocks in a publicly traded company, and are the way in which thousands of wealthy Americans become even richer. The term capital gains also applies to money received from index funds, which are a type of mutual fund with a portfolio constructed to match or track the components of a market index (CITE). This means that by depositing money into an index fund, that money is invested in a wide variety high performing companies. Then, when that money is withdrawn, the owner receives capital gains, just like an individual investor would. Many upper middle class and wealthy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a glaring flaw and one that blatantly allows the wealthy to become wealthier, with no checks on that wealth. Unfortunately, this policy does not just aid the wealthy, but it hurts the poor and middle class that use public goods that are funded by taxes. Demonstrating this, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), predicts that Normalizing the capital gains tax rate so that it s the same as the income tax rate is an easy way to bring a lot of money into the public fisc some $161 billion per year (CITE). For comparison, the poorest 50% of Americans paid a total of $34 billion in taxes in 2013. Taxing capital gains as if it were normal income would remove the tool that the rich and powerful use to become even more rich and powerful, as well as inject billions of into public projects. Therefore, it would go far in solving the issue of wealth inequality that we face today. Fortunately, this issue is very simple to solve. All that is required is for the federal government to treat capital gains as normal income. Subsequently, public projects and systems that are currently suffering with little money, would receive an incredible boost. However, there is still opposition to these ideas among wealthy Americans, Congressmen, and voters. Several arguments are used in opposition to some of the policies that have been suggested in this paper, and in the next few paragraphs, I will refute the common opponents. This response capability was usually resident within the Marine Expeditionary Unit in the form of noncombatant evacuation operations, foreign humanitarian assistance, and embassy reinforcement. However, as the global climate has shifted from a Cold War, or even OIF I, paradigm to one of small conflicts or crises of short duration. Within this context the Marine Corps continues to seek to match its unique capability sets to the dynamic challenges of the 21st century, developing concepts such as Expeditionary Force 21, which seeks to provide options for contingencies through globally dispersed assets and capabilities. The Marine Corps ability to execute in such an environment hinges on the MAGTF s center of gravity, the Aviation Combat Element (ACE), and specifically its game changer , the MV 22 Osprey. The unique capabilities of this aircraft, especially when coupled with the refueling capability of the C 130, truly provide a unique and efficient method to flow forces over distances inconceivable merely a generation ago. In this instance, the aircraft is the innovation: determining to apply a unique capability in regions of instability is simply logical.
