I was scrolling through the weekly microbiology email update when the rare job section caught my
eye. I saw there was an opening to be a lab assistant. I immediately filled out the application and
attached my resume, hopeful that I would be considered for an interview. After I submitted my
application, I began to anticipate what the microbiology lab would be like.Would there be other
freshman working as assistants? What sort of research would they conduct? Finally, the day arrived to
find out. The free standing building was all the way on the opposite side of campus. I rode the bus and
was dropped off in front; everyone scurried out. As I walked the hallway, most of the labs appeared
like classroom labs: a large front station for the instructor surrounded by smaller lab stations for the
students. Finally, the hallway led to a smaller corridor of private labs. I found my way to a larger lab
that opened up into an atypical lab set up. Every inch of space in the lab was utilized by a machine, or
boxes of spare lab gear. It was not as simplistic as the teaching labs. After peering around a few lab

the horrible experiences that Solomon himself faced, within a span of twelve years, after having been
kidnapped as a free man, beaten, and sold into slavery. As a tribute to Northup s powerful memoir, in
2013 a film was created, also called 12 Years a Slave, which served to retell Northup s story through
the power of cinematic effects, actors, and cameras. However, even though the movie is based entirely
on Northup s memoir, in does not serve to accurately portray every factual and historical detail that
appears within the novel. Details such as the number of children Northup had, the characteristics of
the people he came across, to the severity of white treatments towards slaves, all seemed to have been
looked over in the making of the movie. This inattention to detail can confuse or upset those who have

This has been a difficult paper for me to write. I never thought that I had direct experience with racism
until I started writing. I grew up in sunny southern California on a horse farm. My first group of
friends were the Hispanic kids that lived on our property. Their parents took care of the horses. Hugo,
Jessie, Pita and I would play every day in the dirt pile at the barn. Hugo s mom cleaned our house and
helped take care of me. We were inseparable. I had no idea they were any different than me until I
