The Importance Of Karma In Jainism
Karma, in Jainism, is physical matter or (ajiva) that are attracted to the soul by its actions. This karma
then obscures the purity of the soul making it difficult for an individual to achieve liberation or
(moksha). In this religion, the complexity of karma is understood to have an effect in both the physical
sense as well as in the spiritual realm. It is believed that one cannot fully liberate from samsara unless
the soul is cleansed of all karma, dark or light. Because achieving moksha is no easy feat, many souls
continue to endure samsara by accumulating more karma. To stop the continuous accumulation of
karma and achieve moksha, one must allow the soul to endure a journey of extreme asceticism.
Though many souls are not able to embark on this journey, all Jains make five ethical vows which
include ahimsa, satya, asteya, brahmacharya, and aparigraha. Through austere practices of self
discipline, those that desire to reach moksha must follow three main principles, ahimsa, anekantavada,
and aparigraha. Following these principles allows one s soul to rid of all physical evils and eventually
detach from the body to unite with other perfected souls in Siddha Loka or the World of Saints .
Avoiding Karma in Jainism is an autonomous quest done through intense altruism, self restraint and
patience. Ahisma meaning non violence is one of the fundamental principles of Jainism that
individuals practice to avoid karma. This is the belief that one should not harm any form of

Frankenstein vs. Bladerunner
As society changes around us, we spot things we never noticed before: high divorce rates, murder
rates, and drug use just to name a few. James Riddley Scott and Mary Shelley noticed and had a fear
of child abandonment. In Frankenstein, Shelley explores this subject through the viewpoint of a man,
Victor, who creates a child so hideous that he cannot bear to look at it, and consequently deserts it. In
Blade Runner Scott explores this matter through a businessman, Tyrell, who makes replicants of
humans, the Nexus 6, gives them only four years to live, and sells them as slaves. The children of
these creators turn out to be smarter and more human than expected, and revolt against the way
society treats them, giving us all a lesson in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Blade Runner, Roy befriends J.F. Sebastian, a geneticist that happily states, gI create my own
friends.h After Sebastian has smuggled Roy into the Tyrell bedroom, and Roy has convinced himself
that Tyrell can be of no use to him, he kills both of them. This type of despair that Roy shows us is
significant because it portrays his anger toward his creator, who has neglected him since his
conception. The created beings in these tales become smarter than expected, and soon realize that they
have been mistreated. Victorfs monster is smart enough to understand that he has been discarded,
and children that have been abandoned can easily become devilish in nature. The monster pleads again
and again with his audience that he was born good, but compelled by others to do evil. He even argues
that if only one person would have been nice to him, he would have changed his ways when he says,
gIf any being felt emotions of benevolence towards me, I should return them an hundred and an
hundredfold; for that one creatures sake, I would make peace with the whole kind!h (105). The
monster is put in a place that makes him angry with all of society, and this makes him put very little
value on human life. Likewise, the Nexus 6 have little regard for the humans that have made them
slaves. Human life to these robot like creatures is nothing, because human society has put such little
emotional value on the replicants as a race. The mindset of these

Similarities Between Monster And The Giver
How similar are two characters from different books? 16 year old aspiring filmmaker Steve Harmon is
good hearted but struggles to fit in. Jonas is a kind, polite 12 year old boy who is quite complacent
about his rather uneventful life. Steve Harmon from Monster and Jonas from The Giver have
similarities and differences. Although Monster and The Giver are very different books, their
protagonists still share some similarities. For example, Steve Harmon and Jonas are both very young.
Within these stories, we see both protagonists grow up and experience change. As a result of their
young age, there is a heavy focus on the future and how their decisions they make now affect how
they will live their life later. In addition, both characters change

A Comparison Of The 1991 Gulf War
In order to facilitate the discussion of newspapers framing of the recent US military strike in Syria, it
is necessary to look at similar foreign policy event news coverage of the 1991 Gulf War that serves as
a reference to compare the news frames in both stories. To the contrary of Ivengar s findings,
according to which television news coverage of the Gulf War of 1991 was heavily episodic oriented
(more than 75 percentage), the study in this paper has found that more than half of the examined
newspaper articles (56 percent in The New York Times and 59 percent in the USA Today) about the
US military strike in Syria consist of a thematic frame.
There are several possible explanations for the difference in the news framing of two ... Show more

Given these circumstances, television news outlets were unable to produce war footage and broadcast
them in their 24 hours news cycles while print journalists have to relied even more on thematic
framing in their coverage.
Thirdly and related to former point, the two US military interventions differ in size, scope, form and
length of time. While the military operation to liberate Kuwait from Iraqi occupation in 1991
consisted of extensive military preparations and the invasion of a foreign country, the missile strike
against a Syrian regime airfield was a an operation of a few hours, using only unmanned cruise missile
against a single target. As a result, there was simply not enough time to assign correspondents to the
ground, who often tend frame events in wars episodically. More generally, perhaps due to the lack of
access to the ground operations, journalists, particularly those working for newspaper, were able to
cover this foreign policy event predominately thematic as opposed to the first Gulf War.
The difference in the media alone cannot account for the large number of thematic oriented articles in
both newspapers about the US missile strike on Syria. Many articles extended their thematic coverage
to topics such as the fight against ISIS, the complexity of shifting alliances within the fractured armed
opposition in Syria and the involvement other states and actors

Lesbian Gay Bisexual And Transgender Rights
The Umbrella Widens To Cover Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Rights
The business world is an ever changing environment; there are new laws, regulations, and tax codes
passed all the time that effect how we do business here in America and abroad. It is important that we
keep abreast on those changing laws to protect our companies as well as the employees that work for
us. The last few years have opened up many hot topics of debate when it comes to rights being
extended to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. There is no shortage of passion, no
matter what side you stand on, when it comes to same sex marriage, transgender bathroom rights,
legalized adoption for same sex couples, and non discrimination laws being extended to cover LGBT
individuals. While all of these seem like topics that should not affect the workplace drastically, that
could not be further from the truth. A new decision by the Equal Employment Opportunity
Commission (EEOC), Baldwin v. Foxx, extends Title VII s protections to cover sexual orientation for
federal sector employees and may lead the way for courts to recognize similar protections in the
private sector. The EEOC also now maintains that gender identity is protected by Title VII,2 and some
courts have agreed (Muñoz and Kalteux, 2016, p. 43). The job of a Human Resource Manager is to
keep up on the changing laws, and to make sure that the company they work for is compliant in
upholding them. While women have long

Causes Of Failure Of Bridge Roof Vibration
CAUSES OF FAILURE OF BRIDGE
Deck Vibration Since the well known bridge, Tacoma Narrows Bridge was destroyed in 1940 the
designers and owners started to concern more about the stability of bridge deck. For short and long
term of monitoring the deck, the instruments of geophysical are increase used which are;
1. accelerometers and tilt meter
2. strain gages
Figure1: Tacoma Narrows Bridge with severe vibration
Figure 2: Tacoma Narrows Bridge after collapse due to wind fluttering
These are several problems that had been summarized;
1. The stability of aerodynamic of bridge deck when subject to high wind.
2. Some effect on stability of bridge decks for long term, impact by fatigue that caused by cyclic
stresses which are including increased loading from the traffic, temperature changes and trucks that
have heavy load.
3. The bridge decks stability during earthquakes.
All the geophysical techniques are applied to overcome problems above. Those are principally specific
to the vibration monitoring and some environmental monitoring which is vibration monitoring
including strains, displacements, rotation and acceleration, while environmental monitoring including
wind and temperature. All of these are affected
Below are two major solutions to overcome fluttering problems of cable bridges;
1. Modification of the deck
To create more stiff deck, the shape and configuration of the bridge deck must be modified (with
respect to the length of the span).

Affirmitive Action Essay
Affirmative Action is the name given to programs that try to correct past and ongoing discriminations
against women, racial minorities, and others in the work force and in education. The principal goal of
Affirmative Action is to create more diversity and equal opportunities in jobs or schools that used to
be all or mostly male, white, or both. Affirmative Action programs have been in place only a little over
thirty years. Affirmative action works.
There are thousands of examples of situations where people of color, and white women who were
previously excluded from jobs or educational opportunities, or were denied opportunities once
admitted, have gained access through affirmative action. When these policies received executive
branch and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another growing concern is white male candidates are being discriminated against, or losing out
because of affirmative action programs.
If we were to look at the breakdown of various white collar professions or if we look at the overall
average income levels of white men we should immediately notice that people of color are still
significantly under represented and underpaid in every category. People of color don t make up the
proportions of these jobs even remotely equal to their percentage of the population. They don t earn
wages comparable to white men. White men are tremendously over represented in almost any
category of work that is highly rewarded except for professional athletics. According to a 1995
government report, white males make up only 29 percent of the workforce, but hold 95 percent of
senior management positions (Sklar 115). Until there is both equal opportunity and fair distribution of
education, training and advancement to all Americans, affirmative action for people of color is
necessary to counter the hundreds of years of affirmative action that have been directed at white
males.
Affirmative action is not a cure all. It will not eliminate racial discrimination, nor will it eliminate
competition for scarce resources. Affirmative action programs can only

Social Norms Of Social Identity
Social identities have a lot of significance on people s lives today. People have adopted these norms of
behaviors, the values and beliefs which come along with social identities. Various groups within the
society have different expectations and standards of behavior which are now seen as a completely
natural thing rather than just beliefs. There are different norms of social identities which include the
race/ethnicity, religion, class, gender and sexuality. This paper will focus more on the class and gender
social identities.
In my culture, the main two social identities which are considered the most are gender and class. They
highly contribute on how different categories of people are perceived in the society and this
determines the how people relate in the society. Looking at gender, people believe that the difference
in gender is connected to different responsibilities. The way ladies are treated is different from the way
men are treated in the society. This is according to what people strongly believe about gender
difference and as a result, different people are valued differently in different situations. Not only that,
there are also different expectations from each gender. Looking at the responsibilities aspect, there are
jobs which are considered to be suitable for men while others are seen to be suitable for women. This
is not because the women cannot do the jobs which are perceived to be suitable for men, bit it is
simply because these jobs are perceived to be manly. For instance, most of engineering jobs are said to
be manly. Engineering is mostly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also in the case of gender social identity, men tend to be highly paid than women. The society
believes that men have many responsibilities as compared to women and that s why they are paid

The Importance Of Mother In Life
Veronica s hand was pressed between Celeste s, and Veronica felt like she was having an honest to
god, out of body experience. She was just somewhere else, high above the corner booth of Ruggierio
s, completely out of earshot of the entire conversation she was having with her not to be mother in
law.
You want my engagement ring back, Veronica stuttered the words out, trying to make sense of the
whole scene, trying to call herself back from the faraway void she wished she was in. You re asking
me for my ring back, she repeated, her eyes drawn back down to where Celeste was squeezing her
hand.

I guess we ll never know, Celeste softened genuinely, and pressed the ring into her jacket pocket. Was
there anything else you wanted to discuss? With an easy sweep of her signature, she bought them

I went to handle Duncan s accounts with the bank, and apparently he had an account with ten million

Loyalists Vs. Patriots
A Government, according to the Merriam Webster Dictionary is system used to make decisions for a
country. Idealy a country s inhabitants and decision makers would come to a general consensus and
happy compromise regarding the national government s limits and intended purpose. However, in
World History there is long pattern of abuse of power, disagreement, a division between people.
Politics doesn t lend itself well to compromise. During the time period from 1765 1800 there were
many differing, outspoken views on the role of government, and like many ideas they evolved
throughout time. In the beginning of said eon, the main division in governmental ideology was
between Loyalists and Patriots. After the 1765 Stamp Act was enacted, a major ... Show more content

Except now instead of Loyalists vs. Patriots there were Democratic Republicans vs. Federalists. Upon
legal recognition of the United States as an entity separate from Britain, a document was created to
establish distinct rules and values of the government. This document, called The Constitution of the
United States (1787), would establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common
defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves... . The
Constitution has been successful and has served the test of time, but everything it states allows for
various interpretations. A major divide in popular opinion was created and would remain past Thomas
Jefferson s 1800 inauguration. People who based their views strictly upon the Constitution were
known as Anti Federalists or Democratic Republicans. They believed in a small national government
with strong individual state governments. Antifederalists were often common people who wanted fair
representation. In 1787 a document was written called Letters from a Federal Farmer. The line I can
consent to no government, which, in my opinion, is not calculated equally to preserve the rights of all
orders of men in the community. , really emphasizes the fear of an overpowering government.
Federalists supported a strong national government with smaller less powerful state governments.
James Madison, in Federalist 10 (one of the Federalist Papers), refuted the anonymous Anti Federalist
author by writing that statesmen will be able to adjust these clashing interests and render them all
subservient to the public good.. . James Madison thought that by enabling statesmen to have power
they could undermine things established for the public

Hegemony and Youth Culture
Hegemony is a concept that involves uses of power. It was created by Antonio Gramsci in order to
understand the difference between dominant groups in society that have power and that use
intellectual and moral leadership in an attempt to win over the less powerful submissive groups
(Storey 8). In this way, hegemony will be demonstrated in youth culture. Willard states that the
cultural authority of the dominant society must be questioned as to its legitimacy in the dominant role
as the authority plays an important role in its production (739). Talcott Parson (qtd. in Osgerby) says
that youth in his view, established behaviours and values, often perceived by older generations as
unique and different from the dominant society which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Others that called themselves the authentic gothic community didn t particularly like this and thought
they sought resistance they had been portrayed the wrong way. They then used the internet to
counteract this by posting on sites that the shooters of columbine weren t true Goths and had merely
adopted gothic fashion (Griffiths 240). This indicates that the influence of the media has
misrepresented Goths as something they are not. In this case Goths had achieved the resistance from
the powerful dominating society they sought if not in the way they planned to.
Though Goths have been outcast by the media, Paul Hodkinson (qtd. in Osgerby) illustrates a different
portrayal of Goths in society, they pride themselves on having individuality, creativity, open
mindedness and commitment (132) and this is shown in society by applying themselves in creative
works, sometimes involving their usual job.
Popular entertainment also applies to hegemony in its use of power as there is a dominant view that
through the use of popular media, video games, particular theatres and other popular forms of
entertainment youth has been badly affected and influenced by these. The transgression of juvenile
crime in Britain in Victorian times in youth is thought to be derived from penny gaff theatres
(Springhall qtd. in Osgerby 66).
Over the years popular entertainment has

Microsoft would henceforth focus its platform efforts on Windows and the NT kernel. In the ensuing
years OS/2 fell to the side and Windows became the favored PC platform. Some years later, Microsoft
s Internet Explorer web browser displaced Netscape s Navigator, in a turn of events that many
attributed to Microsoft s inclusion of Internet Explorer in Windows at no extra charge. An opposing
view is that the inclusion in Windows was less important in Internet Explorer s adoption than
Microsoft s improvement of the browser s features to a level comparable with Navigator. As the
architect of Microsoft s product strategy, Gates has aggressively broadened the company s range of
products and, once it has obtained a leading position in a category, has vigorously defended that
position. His and other Microsoft executives strategic decisions have more than once drawn the

Ivy Rowe s Ideas of the Past in Fair and Tender Ladies Essay
Ivy Rowe s Ideas of the Past in Fair and Tender Ladies
In Lee Smith s Fair and Tender Ladies, Ivy Rowe has a constant attachment to her past. This
attachment is one of the main themes in the novel. It is one of her main reasons for letter writing and
why she does some of the things that she does, because she does not want to lose her grip on her past.
Ivy Rowe, in Lee Smith s Fair and Tender
Ladies, uses letter writing to keep a hold of her grip on the past and where she came from.
In Letters from Sugar Fork, Ivy writes for a number of reasons. She wants to see how and what other

The beauty of the mountain stays with her the rest of her life.
In Letters from Majestic, Ivy continues to use letter writing as a means to express emotions and
thoughts that she could not otherwise express. I feel I am bursting with news but I can not tell it to a
sole, I have no one to talk to. (Smith, p. 96) This quote shows just how much Ivy needs to write. She
has no one to talk to and cannot express her feelings to anyone save through writing these letters. She
continues to feel as thought she needs to hold on to the past and continue with her exploration of
herself by looking backwards instead of forwards. That is one of the biggest themes in this book. Her
journey of exploration by looking backwards instead of forwards. It is rare that in any of her letters
she really talks about things to come.
It is always about what has already happened and what is happening, very rarely does she talk about
what is to happen later.
Other reviewers of the novel agree that Ivy s letter writing is helpful for her and the people she writes
to. The adolescent Ivy s letters are often therapeutic. Her mother s plan to move to town after the
family farm fails prompts a letter to her deceased father in which
Ivy not only deals with the impact of change,

This was an interesting article. It examined the use of electrical stimulation as a treatment for
spasticity in the ankle plantar muscles, specifically the tibias posterior, gastrocnemius, and soleus.
Electrodes were placed over the extensor digitorum longus muscles and the extensor hallicus muscles
of post stroke patients with plantar flexor spasticity. Various intensities were tested. The article
explains that spasticity in the ankle plantar flexors can lead to an equinovarus or strephenopodia

Film Analysis Of The Movie The Bride Of Frankenstein
Making a good movie is easy but making a great movie is hard. As I watched a short clip from the
movie The Bride of Frankenstein I watched how the acting, plot, lighting, camera work, and script all
made this film come to life. This movie was made in 1935 yet it is still so compelling to watch
because it is successful with the important components of a movie. The first thing I noticed about the
short clip was the lighting. As a photographer lighting is the most important thing about pictures and
films. I realized that the whole movie was very dark for the most part. As I watched the short clip I
saw harsh shadows on the background or on their faces which gave a mysterious feeling. As a viewer
it came off creepy, and kept thinking was something about to pop out? The lighting was great when
Pretorius says to Dr. Frankenstein You are responsible for all the murders, there is a dark shadow on
Dr. Frankenstein. As for Pretorius it seems like he has a halo of light around him. I have a feeling that
the lightening in this conversation was intentional. Dr. Frankenstein is looked down, dark, and evil
because he murdered people. While in this same conversation it seems like Pretorius is the good guy
in this situation even though they both do not seem very good. All in all, the lighting was very
intentional. If they put soft/ airy lighting in this film, I do not think the message would come across
and it would not be as interesting than it was. Acting and script go hand on hand

Breaking The Sound Barrier Research Paper
Boom! Clash! Vroom! As I glimpse up at the sky, there appears to be an aircraft going immensely fast.
After the noise was exposed, it was accompanied by a mob of fog. This is known as Breaking the
Sound Barrier . It s difficult to do this, but Charles Yeager and Jacqueline Cochran succeeded and
made new world records. To start off, Charles Elwood Yeager, known as Chuck Yeager, grew up in

the age of 15, he had his first encounter with planes. After graduating high school, he had a friend who

Jesse Owens 1913 1980 American track and field athlete Few athletes have transcended their sports to
become a symbol of an era as did Jesse Owens. Enduring a childhood marked by grinding poverty in
Alabama, Owens became a star athlete in high school after his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio. His
achievements earned Owens several lucrative offers to attend college as a track and field athlete, and
he enrolled at Ohio State University in 1933. On May 25, 1935, Owens made national headlines for
setting five world records and tying another record at the Big Ten Intercollegiate Championships in

Athletic Success as a Teenager Owens enrolled in Cleveland s Fairmount Junior High School around
1927 and quickly attracted the attention of a mentor who would prove crucial in his future athletic
success. Charles Riley worked at the school as a physical education teacher and track and field coach
and immediately realized that Owens was a naturally gifted athlete who had not yet taken up serious
training. Riley started a rigorous training program for Owens in special morning sessions before
school. Within a year, Owens was running the 100 yard dash in eleven seconds and in 1928 he set two
world records for his age group in the high jump, at six feet, and the long jump, at twenty two feet,
eleven and three quarters inches. Under Riley s instruction to run as though the track were on fire,
Owens also improved his times on the track. Of the seventy nine races he entered in high school,
Owens won seventy five of them. Owens also formed a warm personal relationship off the track with
Riley, who continued to coach him after he entered East Technical High School in 1930. After Henry
Owens suffered a traffic accident in 1929 and experienced extended periods of unemployment in the
Great Depression, Riley s role as a surrogate father was especially important to the young athlete.

The Victorian era was around the mid to late 1800s and was named after Queen Victoria, who took the
crown at age eighteen in 1837. This era provided women with more rights, though they still had very
few, and many women s rights movements started happening towards the end of the era. The
sexualization of the female body became a common thing, and women often used their bodies to get
men, which did have a downfall because rape was not uncommon. Colonization became more popular
during this time, which increased the use of the English language. Slavery becoming abolished and
Darwin becoming well known, which caused the rise of science versus religion, are other examples of
major changes that occurred during this time period. The writings ... Show more content on

black dresses, Coco Chanel created timeless designs that are still popular today. She herself became a
much revered style icon known for her simple yet sophisticated outfits paired with great accessories,
such as several strands of pearls. As Chanel once said, luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not

Her early years, however, were anything but glamorous. After her mother s death, Chanel was put in

sew a skill that would lead to her life s work. Her nickname came from another occupation entirely.

At the age of 70, Chanel made a triumphant return to the fashion world. She first received scathing

world.
In 1969, Chanel s fascinating life story became the basis for the Broadway musical Coco starring
Katharine Hepburn as the legendary designer. Alan Jay Lerner wrote the book and lyrics for the show

Using Literary Devices In The Sixth Sense
After recently watching The Sixth Sense I realized that there is a great use of devices in the film. The
Sixth Sense is about a child psychologist Dr. Malcolm, who tries to help a child defeat his dark secret.
I think this movie is a prime example of using literary devices such as, foreshadowing and symbolism
within the script. I really enjoyed this film for these reasons and would recommend it everyone. There
are many instances in which these devices are used in the film, some are much more noticeable than
the others. This movie has a really high replay value because, you always notice something new in
regards to symbolism. Also the other view points that you can see the story after knowing what
happens in the dramatic ending. The many uses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The biggest aspect of foreshadowing used in this movie is the fact that Malcolm only interacts with
Cole during the entire movie after his death. This is something that is hard to notice on the first time
you watch this film. This aspect gives the film high replay value. When Malcolm is sitting in the
living room with Cole s mother the viewer assumes that they are both talking when Cole arrives home
from school, when in reality she doesn t even notice Malcolm. When Malcolm attends Cole s plays at
his school no one asks him why he s there or anything at all. My favorite example of this is, there are
other parents recording the play and are sitting directly behind Malcolm. If they were able to see him,
Malcolm would be in the way of the shot. The other parents see right through him because he is dead,
I think that this is brilliant foreshadowing for the twist at the end of the film. The temperature change
is one of the more obvious uses of foreshadowing in the movie. The temperature dropped in the film
when a ghost was upset. A the start of one of the scenes, there is a close up on the thermostat changing
to cold by itself. This is foreshadowing on the upset ghosts that are about to visit

Causes Of The Emancipation Proclamation
Many large beliefs are that the Emancipation Proclamation was set forth to end slavery, which is only
partially true. The Proclamation was set forth to undermine the south, which meant disarming the
Confederate rebellion and preventing secession. Lincoln s strategic goal for the Proclamation was to
remove any financial gain from it s now Southern enemy. With slaves now freed in the South, the war
effort was financially at risk. Freed slaves in the South meant funding to supply weapons, uniforms,
rations, and supplies were completely at a halt. Lincoln s vision was to break the South from the inside
to put a complete halt to the South s secession. Allowing slaves to join the Union army meant an
endless supply of troops for the Union. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Congress eventually took this a step further in 1862, by enacting an article of war that forbid army
personnel from returning slaves to owner s who were using them in the South s war effort. This step
further showed the nation that Lincoln was attempting to make this war not just about secession, but
freedom. During 1862, many Republicans were set in their belief that the war must now be against
slavery and freedom, instead of just secession. Lincoln was forced to walk on eggshells because while
his personal belief was for the war against slavery, he was afraid of alienating half of the North who
were supporting the war against secession. Conflict was raging during 1862 and Lincoln was starting
to feel the pressure to enact the emancipation policy. During this time, Union armies had been
strategically defeated during the summer months, and this policy would weaken the South. While the
policy would weaken the South, the North would grow enormously in strength. Slaves providing war
efforts for the South, would now be fighting against it by adding loads of manpower to the current
struggling North in 1862. There was an argument that emancipation was a military need because the
North was tasting defeat, and reversing the current position would be only beneficial to the Union. In
July of 1862 Congress passed

I Had The Pleasure For Care For A Resident
Working in clinical setting was a great experience. I had the pleasure to care for a resident that was

experience with my resident and performed an assessment known as a SPICES. This assessment
allows us as caregivers to identify and help provide nursing interventions to an elderly that may face
these geriatric syndromes. During a SPICES assessment, we look for signs of problems during sleep,
problems eating, incontinence, confusion, as well as evidence of any falls and any possible skin
breakdown. During my assessment, I encountered many medical conditions my patient has that
supports that she is having problems with a few of the geriatric syndromes. When it comes to sleep,
my patient does not seem to sleep very well and has difficulty falling asleep. There are no signs that
my resident has any problems with her everyday feeding and eating. She is able to perform this daily
activity individually. As for having trouble with incontinence, for the most part this resident is able to

not eat or drink anything too late which prevents her from having to use the bathroom during sleep
hours. While she will not ask for help, if the need arises, she will use a bed pan. However, on rare

details with page numbers from the book to explain. I think the best parts of the book are where you
see Liesel grow and understand the difficult times that she lives in with her limited knowledge of life.
Something I really enjoyed this book was the characterization and background of the characters. One
of the best parts of the book is when we see the first time Liesel ever steal a book, after her young
brother Werner died on the train ride to their new foster parents home. She was with her mother who
could not support her two children after Liesel s father was accused of being a communist . They stop
at a graveyard where a young gravedigger buries Werner as his family sobs over him. After this, the
narrator describes Liesel seeing the dropped book The Grave Diggers Manual , and tucking it into her
clothing (Zusak 54). This is a turning point where we can see Liesel s personality developing as she
seeks comfort in her life from sorrow, The book thief had struck for the first time the beginning of an
illustrious career. (Zusak 19). The worst part of the book was arguably the very end. Although a
terrible end to the story is foreshadowed continually throughout the book, it still comes as a shock
when you find out the fate of the characters. We find that after all of the characters had

Cell Phone Etiquette Essay
Cell Phone Etiquette Jasmyne Ness Montana State University Billings Today, cellphones have now
became a support for the lives of many Americans. This has caused a struggle for some users to
approach the social norms and etiquette of cell phone usage. When I was younger, I remember going
to my parents company Christmas parties and hardly ever seeing a cell phone being used. Now, when I
go to my own company Christmas parties, all I ever notice is people on their cellphones constantly.
Checking on Facebook, surfing Instagram, or taking selfies to put on Snapchat. In my opinion, I feel
like cell phones have taken over face to face conversations and rely more on their digital screen. When
I m trying to have a face to face conversation with someone, I find it frustrating when the other person
is on their phone while I m talking. Another example, when people are having a dinner with a
significant other or even just a good friend and you find them constantly on their phone. Today, this is
a common sight to see when dining out. I believe that this should come to a stop. When I go out to
dinner with my family or just friends I always put my phone in the middle of the table, face down, to
avoid being tempted to use it. By doing this I am able to have an actual conversation with my family. I

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Ambient air in urban, rural, and industrial areas contains an array of
volatile organic compounds (VOCs). They spread in the air as gases from some solids or liquid
materials. Society and environment are directly healthy affected in short and long term by VOCs at
trace level concentrations (2). Air pollutants toxic are class of chemicals that may consider health

various sources, such as power plants, and spraying pesticides. There are two types of air pollutants
that are primary pollutants, which are emitted directly into the air from pollution sources, and

The Importance Of Environmental Change On The Environment
Environmental change on the planet can be caused by different exercises. At the point when
environmental change happens; temperatures can expand a significantly. At the point when
temperature rises, a wide range of changes can happen on Earth. For instance, it can bring about more
surges, dry seasons, or extraordinary rain, and in addition more continuous and extreme warmth
waves. Seas and icy masses have additionally encountered a few changes: seas are warming and
ending up more acidic, ice sheets are dissolving, and ocean levels are rising. As these progressions
regularly happen in future decades, they will probably exhibit difficulties to our general public and
condition.
Amid the previous century, human exercises have discharged a lot of carbon dioxide and other nursery
gasses into the air. The vast majority of the gasses originate from consuming petroleum derivatives to
deliver vitality. Nursery gasses resemble a cover around the Earth, catching vitality in the climate and
making it warm. This is known as the nursery impact and it is characteristic and important to help life
on earth. Be that as it may, while nursery gasses development, the atmosphere changes and result in
perilous impacts to human wellbeing and biological communities. Individuals have adjusted to the

Advertisements are a vital part of any company s marketing strategy, and are used to inform or
persuade an audience about a certain product or service. In fact, North American companies are
among the world s highest advertisers (Boone et al., 2010, 502). Today, an average consumer is

Marketers should make responsible decisions, and not just focus on generating profits, because it is
legal. Ads should address audiences not just as consumers who care about material interests but as
citizens who care about social virtues and the public good (Hove, 2009, 35). The idea of advertising
alcoholic beverages is unethical. While there are mild restrictions in Canada regarding alcohol
promotions, there is a demand for more. Some provinces run ads that promote responsible drinking, or
the dangers of drinking and driving in an attempt to shed light on alcohol abuse (Boone, 2010, 525).
However, these attempts do not cancel out the multitude of beer and liquor advertisements in today s
media. Some alcohol advertisements include the ideology that drinking a certain brand of beer will
influence their social class, or improve their quality of life in some way. This is extremely
controversial. An article from the South African Journal of Psychology notes, there are no laws against
[alcohol] advertisements; however, responsible corporate and professional action, would prevent the
use of these advertisements from a social and moral standpoint (Dubihela amp; Dubihela, 2011, 209).
Clearly, an ethical dilemma is present. The Canadian Radio television and Telecommunications

employer sponsored health insurance is designed to be the primary source of coverage for

Similar to Massachusetts insurance reform, the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act
(PPACA) also features insurance exchanges, individual and employer mandates, and expanded
Medicaid coverage. Due to the similarity between the Massachusetts health reform and the Affordable
Care Act, much can be learned from Massachusetts s experience on implementing health insurance
coverage expansions and employer provided universal insurance coverage law. In other words, this
case offers insight into how some businesses and their employees might react to federal law
requirements.
Several studies sought to investigate the effect of the universal health reform and its impact on the
labor market outcomes, such as the unemployment rate and average wage (Buchmueller, 2013;
Kolstad, 2012). However, they failed to take into account the potential legal loopholes in part time
status, employer provided coverage and Medicaid, and the impact of companies size, even though
studies have shown that employer provided regulations are not equally demanding to different
businesses (Gruber, 2004).
The primary purpose of this paper is to determine whether the Massachusetts healthcare reform has, in
fact, improved health insurance coverage. If the reform indeed improved the coverage, which channels

The Aztecs were a huge Empire in Mexico, with many gold resources and other expensive resources.
Cortez was very smart and manipulative, whereas the Aztecs were gullible. The Aztecs believed that

Aztecs soon realized that Cortez was not a god, just an explorer. Cortez was the downfall of the

Should Bob Marley Have A Statue
I think Bob Marley should have a statue dedicated to his honor. I think this for three main reasons. The
first is the fact that he won the Order of Merit award. This is important for many reasons the first is
the fact that it is the fourth highest honor awarded by the nation of Jamaica. The second reason this is
so important is because it can only be given to two people a year. The final reason this is so important
is because this award can only be held by 15 people. The second reason he deserves a statue is because
he was so dedicated to his religion. Bob Marley was a Rastafarian and as a Rasta he believed god told
everybody to always keep there body whole and he was so devout to his religion when he was
diagnosed with melanoma in his foot

  • 2. The Importance Of Karma In Jainism Karma, in Jainism, is physical matter or (ajiva) that are attracted to the soul by its actions. This karma then obscures the purity of the soul making it difficult for an individual to achieve liberation or (moksha). In this religion, the complexity of karma is understood to have an effect in both the physical sense as well as in the spiritual realm. It is believed that one cannot fully liberate from samsara unless the soul is cleansed of all karma, dark or light. Because achieving moksha is no easy feat, many souls continue to endure samsara by accumulating more karma. To stop the continuous accumulation of karma and achieve moksha, one must allow the soul to endure a journey of extreme asceticism. Though many souls are not able to embark on this journey, all Jains make five ethical vows which include ahimsa, satya, asteya, brahmacharya, and aparigraha. Through austere practices of self discipline, those that desire to reach moksha must follow three main principles, ahimsa, anekantavada, and aparigraha. Following these principles allows one s soul to rid of all physical evils and eventually detach from the body to unite with other perfected souls in Siddha Loka or the World of Saints . Avoiding Karma in Jainism is an autonomous quest done through intense altruism, self restraint and patience. Ahisma meaning non violence is one of the fundamental principles of Jainism that individuals practice to avoid karma. This is the belief that one should not harm any form of ... • 3. Frankenstein vs. Bladerunner As society changes around us, we spot things we never noticed before: high divorce rates, murder rates, and drug use just to name a few. James Riddley Scott and Mary Shelley noticed and had a fear of child abandonment. In Frankenstein, Shelley explores this subject through the viewpoint of a man, Victor, who creates a child so hideous that he cannot bear to look at it, and consequently deserts it. In Blade Runner Scott explores this matter through a businessman, Tyrell, who makes replicants of humans, the Nexus 6, gives them only four years to live, and sells them as slaves. The children of these creators turn out to be smarter and more human than expected, and revolt against the way society treats them, giving us all a lesson in ... Sebastian, a geneticist that happily states, gI create my own friends.h After Sebastian has smuggled Roy into the Tyrell bedroom, and Roy has convinced himself that Tyrell can be of no use to him, he kills both of them. This type of despair that Roy shows us is significant because it portrays his anger toward his creator, who has neglected him since his conception. The created beings in these tales become smarter than expected, and soon realize that they have been mistreated. Victorfs monster is smart enough to understand that he has been discarded, and children that have been abandoned can easily become devilish in nature. The monster pleads again and again with his audience that he was born good, but compelled by others to do evil. He even argues that if only one person would have been nice to him, he would have changed his ways when he says, gIf any being felt emotions of benevolence towards me, I should return them an hundred and an hundredfold; for that one creatures sake, I would make peace with the whole kind!h (105). The monster is put in a place that makes him angry with all of society, and this makes him put very little value on human life. Likewise, the Nexus 6 have little regard for the humans that have made them slaves. Human life to these robot like creatures is nothing, because human society has put such little emotional value on the replicants as a race. The mindset of these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Jonas is a kind, polite 12 year old boy who is quite complacent about his rather uneventful life. Steve Harmon from Monster and Jonas from The Giver have similarities and differences. Although Monster and The Giver are very different books, their protagonists still share some similarities. For example, Steve Harmon and Jonas are both very young. Within these stories, we see both protagonists grow up and experience change. As a result of their young age, there is a heavy focus on the future and how their decisions they make now affect how they will live their life later. In addition, both characters change ... A Comparison Of The 1991 Gulf War In order to facilitate the discussion of newspapers framing of the recent US military strike in Syria, it is necessary to look at similar foreign policy event news coverage of the 1991 Gulf War that serves as a reference to compare the news frames in both stories. To the contrary of Ivengar s findings, according to which television news coverage of the Gulf War of 1991 was heavily episodic oriented (more than 75 percentage), the study in this paper has found that more than half of the examined newspaper articles (56 percent in The New York Times and 59 percent in the USA Today) about the US military strike in Syria consist of a thematic frame. There are several possible explanations for the difference in the news framing of two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Given these circumstances, television news outlets were unable to produce war footage and broadcast them in their 24 hours news cycles while print journalists have to relied even more on thematic framing in their coverage. Thirdly and related to former point, the two US military interventions differ in size, scope, form and length of time. While the military operation to liberate Kuwait from Iraqi occupation in 1991 consisted of extensive military preparations and the invasion of a foreign country, the missile strike against a Syrian regime airfield was a an operation of a few hours, using only unmanned cruise missile against a single target. As a result, there was simply not enough time to assign correspondents to the ground, who often tend frame events in wars episodically. More generally, perhaps due to the lack of access to the ground operations, journalists, particularly those working for newspaper, were able to cover this foreign policy event predominately thematic as opposed to the first Gulf War. The difference in the media alone cannot account for the large number of thematic oriented articles in both newspapers about the US missile strike on Syria. Many articles extended their thematic coverage to topics such as the fight against ISIS, the complexity of shifting alliances within the fractured armed opposition in Syria and the involvement other states and actors ... • 6. Lesbian Gay Bisexual And Transgender Rights The Umbrella Widens To Cover Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Rights The business world is an ever changing environment; there are new laws, regulations, and tax codes passed all the time that effect how we do business here in America and abroad. It is important that we keep abreast on those changing laws to protect our companies as well as the employees that work for us. The last few years have opened up many hot topics of debate when it comes to rights being extended to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. There is no shortage of passion, no matter what side you stand on, when it comes to same sex marriage, transgender bathroom rights, legalized adoption for same sex couples, and non discrimination laws being extended to cover LGBT individuals. While all of these seem like topics that should not affect the workplace drastically, that could not be further from the truth. A new decision by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), Baldwin v. Foxx, extends Title VII s protections to cover sexual orientation for federal sector employees and may lead the way for courts to recognize similar protections in the private sector. The EEOC also now maintains that gender identity is protected by Title VII,2 and some courts have agreed (Muñoz and Kalteux, 2016, p. 43). The job of a Human Resource Manager is to keep up on the changing laws, and to make sure that the company they work for is compliant in upholding them. While women have long ... Affirmitive Action Essay Affirmative Action is the name given to programs that try to correct past and ongoing discriminations against women, racial minorities, and others in the work force and in education. The principal goal of Affirmative Action is to create more diversity and equal opportunities in jobs or schools that used to be all or mostly male, white, or both. Affirmative Action programs have been in place only a little over thirty years. Affirmative action works. Another growing concern is white male candidates are being discriminated against, or losing out because of affirmative action programs. If we were to look at the breakdown of various white collar professions or if we look at the overall average income levels of white men we should immediately notice that people of color are still significantly under represented and underpaid in every category. People of color don t make up the proportions of these jobs even remotely equal to their percentage of the population. They don t earn wages comparable to white men. White men are tremendously over represented in almost any category of work that is highly rewarded except for professional athletics. According to a 1995 government report, white males make up only 29 percent of the workforce, but hold 95 percent of senior management positions (Sklar 115). Until there is both equal opportunity and fair distribution of education, training and advancement to all Americans, affirmative action for people of color is necessary to counter the hundreds of years of affirmative action that have been directed at white males. Affirmative action is not a cure all. It will not eliminate racial discrimination, nor will it eliminate competition for scarce resources. Affirmative action programs can only ... People have adopted these norms of behaviors, the values and beliefs which come along with social identities. Various groups within the society have different expectations and standards of behavior which are now seen as a completely natural thing rather than just beliefs. There are different norms of social identities which include the race/ethnicity, religion, class, gender and sexuality. This paper will focus more on the class and gender social identities. In my culture, the main two social identities which are considered the most are gender and class. They highly contribute on how different categories of people are perceived in the society and this determines the how people relate in the society. Looking at gender, people believe that the difference in gender is connected to different responsibilities. The way ladies are treated is different from the way men are treated in the society. This is according to what people strongly believe about gender difference and as a result, different people are valued differently in different situations. Not only that, there are also different expectations from each gender. Looking at the responsibilities aspect, there are jobs which are considered to be suitable for men while others are seen to be suitable for women. This is not because the women cannot do the jobs which are perceived to be suitable for men, bit it is simply because these jobs are perceived to be manly. Idealy a country s inhabitants and decision makers would come to a general consensus and happy compromise regarding the national government s limits and intended purpose. However, in World History there is long pattern of abuse of power, disagreement, a division between people. Politics doesn t lend itself well to compromise. During the time period from 1765 1800 there were many differing, outspoken views on the role of government, and like many ideas they evolved throughout time. Except now instead of Loyalists vs. Patriots there were Democratic Republicans vs. Federalists. Upon legal recognition of the United States as an entity separate from Britain, a document was created to establish distinct rules and values of the government. This document, called The Constitution of the United States (1787), would establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves... . The Constitution has been successful and has served the test of time, but everything it states allows for various interpretations. A major divide in popular opinion was created and would remain past Thomas Jefferson s 1800 inauguration. People who based their views strictly upon the Constitution were known as Anti Federalists or Democratic Republicans. They believed in a small national government with strong individual state governments. Antifederalists were often common people who wanted fair representation. In 1787 a document was written called Letters from a Federal Farmer. The line I can consent to no government, which, in my opinion, is not calculated equally to preserve the rights of all orders of men in the community. , really emphasizes the fear of an overpowering government. Federalists supported a strong national government with smaller less powerful state governments. • 13. Hegemony and Youth Culture Hegemony is a concept that involves uses of power. It was created by Antonio Gramsci in order to understand the difference between dominant groups in society that have power and that use intellectual and moral leadership in an attempt to win over the less powerful submissive groups (Storey 8). In this way, hegemony will be demonstrated in youth culture. Willard states that the cultural authority of the dominant society must be questioned as to its legitimacy in the dominant role as the authority plays an important role in its production (739). Talcott Parson (qtd. in Osgerby) says that youth in his view, established behaviours and values, often perceived by older generations as unique and different from the dominant society which ... Others that called themselves the authentic gothic community didn t particularly like this and thought they sought resistance they had been portrayed the wrong way. They then used the internet to counteract this by posting on sites that the shooters of columbine weren t true Goths and had merely adopted gothic fashion (Griffiths 240). This indicates that the influence of the media has misrepresented Goths as something they are not. In this case Goths had achieved the resistance from the powerful dominating society they sought if not in the way they planned to. Though Goths have been outcast by the media, Paul Hodkinson (qtd. in Osgerby) illustrates a different portrayal of Goths in society, they pride themselves on having individuality, creativity, open mindedness and commitment (132) and this is shown in society by applying themselves in creative works, sometimes involving their usual job. Popular entertainment also applies to hegemony in its use of power as there is a dominant view that through the use of popular media, video games, particular theatres and other popular forms of entertainment youth has been badly affected and influenced by these. The transgression of juvenile crime in Britain in Victorian times in youth is thought to be derived from penny gaff theatres (Springhall qtd. in Osgerby 66). As I watched a short clip from the movie The Bride of Frankenstein I watched how the acting, plot, lighting, camera work, and script all made this film come to life. This movie was made in 1935 yet it is still so compelling to watch because it is successful with the important components of a movie. The first thing I noticed about the short clip was the lighting. As a photographer lighting is the most important thing about pictures and films. I realized that the whole movie was very dark for the most part. As I watched the short clip I saw harsh shadows on the background or on their faces which gave a mysterious feeling. As a viewer it came off creepy, and kept thinking was something about to pop out? The lighting was great when Pretorius says to Dr. Frankenstein You are responsible for all the murders, there is a dark shadow on Dr. Frankenstein. As for Pretorius it seems like he has a halo of light around him. I have a feeling that the lightening in this conversation was intentional. Dr. Frankenstein is looked down, dark, and evil because he murdered people. While in this same conversation it seems like Pretorius is the good guy in this situation even though they both do not seem very good. All in all, the lighting was very intentional. Freed slaves in the South meant funding to supply weapons, uniforms, rations, and supplies were completely at a halt. During 1862, many Republicans were set in their belief that the war must now be against slavery and freedom, instead of just secession. Lincoln was forced to walk on eggshells because while his personal belief was for the war against slavery, he was afraid of alienating half of the North who were supporting the war against secession. I think the best parts of the book are where you see Liesel grow and understand the difficult times that she lives in with her limited knowledge of life. Something I really enjoyed this book was the characterization and background of the characters. One of the best parts of the book is when we see the first time Liesel ever steal a book, after her young brother Werner died on the train ride to their new foster parents home. She was with her mother who could not support her two children after Liesel s father was accused of being a communist . They stop at a graveyard where a young gravedigger buries Werner as his family sobs over him. • 34. Cell Phone Etiquette Essay Cell Phone Etiquette Jasmyne Ness Montana State University Billings Today, cellphones have now became a support for the lives of many Americans. This has caused a struggle for some users to approach the social norms and etiquette of cell phone usage. When I was younger, I remember going to my parents company Christmas parties and hardly ever seeing a cell phone being used. Now, when I go to my own company Christmas parties, all I ever notice is people on their cellphones constantly. Checking on Facebook, surfing Instagram, or taking selfies to put on Snapchat. In my opinion, I feel like cell phones have taken over face to face conversations and rely more on their digital screen. When I m trying to have a face to face conversation with someone, I find it frustrating when the other person is on their phone while I m talking. Another example, when people are having a dinner with a significant other or even just a good friend and you find them constantly on their phone. Today, this is a common sight to see when dining out. I believe that this should come to a stop. When I go out to dinner with my family or just friends I always put my phone in the middle of the table, face down, to avoid being tempted to use it. By doing this I am able to have an actual conversation with my family. I have always obeyed this, but you always seem to have one, two, or even more that don t follow this rule. Marketers should make responsible decisions, and not just focus on generating profits, because it is legal. Ads should address audiences not just as consumers who care about material interests but as citizens who care about social virtues and the public good (Hove, 2009, 35). The idea of advertising alcoholic beverages is unethical. While there are mild restrictions in Canada regarding alcohol promotions, there is a demand for more. Some provinces run ads that promote responsible drinking, or the dangers of drinking and driving in an attempt to shed light on alcohol abuse (Boone, 2010, 525). However, these attempts do not cancel out the multitude of beer and liquor advertisements in today s media. Some alcohol advertisements include the ideology that drinking a certain brand of beer will influence their social class, or improve their quality of life in some way. This is extremely controversial. An article from the South African Journal of Psychology notes, there are no laws against [alcohol] advertisements; however, responsible corporate and professional action, would prevent the use of these advertisements from a social and moral standpoint (Dubihela amp; Dubihela, 2011, 209). Hplc Analysis of Capsaicin Essay HPLC Analysis of Capsaicin Eric Sorenson Work Completed on 11/28/12 Quantitative analysis of Capsaicin was analyzed in three peppers that were expected to differ greatly in their capsaicin content and thus their relative spiciness. The idea was to have a nice range of capsaicin concentrations to clearly reflect the subjective pain one experiences from biting into a chili. Fresh Habanero, Jalapeno and Red Bell Pepper were purchased from the local Family Fresh grocery store to be analyzed via HPLC. This capsaicin project consisted of three stages to ensure proper and accurate analysis. The first stage was the preparation of the three samples for injection into the HPLC. A gradient elution was programmed for 20% to 100% solvent B in five minutes then return to 20% solvent B for the last three minutes. The last stage of the project was the actual sample analysis. The HPLC was programmed to run a reinjection of the calibration standard, a reinjection of the blank, then two injections of each sample A, B and C respectively under the same conditions as described above. Once the chromatograms were obtained and assistance from Dr. Marchand was needed in order to identify significant peaks. Calculations were then done on all three samples to quantitate the amount of capsaicin in each pepper. See calculations page. The concentration of capsaicin in the habanero pepper was calculated to be 207 µg of capsaicin per gram of pepper. Jalapeno was 70.9 µg of capsaicin per gram of pepper and red bell pepper was 8.033 µg of capsaicin per gram of pepper. Similar to Massachusetts insurance reform, the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) also features insurance exchanges, individual and employer mandates, and expanded Medicaid coverage. Due to the similarity between the Massachusetts health reform and the Affordable Care Act, much can be learned from Massachusetts s experience on implementing health insurance coverage expansions and employer provided universal insurance coverage law. In other words, this case offers insight into how some businesses and their employees might react to federal law requirements. Several studies sought to investigate the effect of the universal health reform and its impact on the labor market outcomes, such as the unemployment rate and average wage (Buchmueller, 2013; Kolstad, 2012). However, they failed to take into account the potential legal loopholes in part time status, employer provided coverage and Medicaid, and the impact of companies size, even though studies have shown that employer provided regulations are not equally demanding to different businesses (Gruber, 2004). The primary purpose of this paper is to determine whether the Massachusetts healthcare reform has, in fact, improved health insurance coverage. If the reform indeed improved the coverage, which channels were utilized to accomplish this? In order to better assess this issue, one explored the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The first is the fact that he won the Order of Merit award. This is important for many reasons the first is the fact that it is the fourth highest honor awarded by the nation of Jamaica. The second reason this is so important is because it can only be given to two people a year. The final reason this is so important is because this award can only be held by 15 people.
