Social Darwinism Research Paper
With the establishment of Europe and the uprising of many new nations and counties led European
natives to gain knowledge of new ideologies of political and economic control. In the late nineteenth
century a young naturalist and biologist from England by the name of Charles Darwin, created a
theory that human beings, like animals and plants, compete in a struggle for existence. In which the
theory of natural selection was crafted and resulted in Darwin s survival of the fittest . Scholars began
to use the term Social Darwinism in order to describe the concept of Charles Darwin to explain the
philosophical justification behind racism, politics, economics and social issues.
Intellectuals also concluded that Social Darwinism rooted from Darwin s ... Show more content on

In which it proposes that a free market established social conditions making it more difficult for the
poor to survive in an economy where the rich are successful. According to The Constitutional Rights
Foundation, scholars of Social Darwinism believe that capitalism and society itself needs unlimited
business competition to thrive in the American economy (2003). During the Gilded Age several
American industries, monopolies and competing companies increased their control in production and
the value of their goods. Men, women and children were employed and worked extensive hours for
low pay and dangerous working environments. This resulted in large labor unions acting upon a strike
towards their employer. However, at times judges also implemented the practice of laissez faire and
issued court orders to end the strikes. The wealthy people of this era benefited from laissez faire and
they strongly believed that the government should not interfere with the competition of the fittest

The Importance Of Cremation
Cremation
Studies have provided an understanding and argue that the choice to cremate or bury the dead may
have been one of the biggest decisions for the Anglo Saxons (Williams, H. 2002). But also, that we
should take into consideration that cremation was a show and helped define social distinctions within
the living society, as the inclusion in the rite would define your social distinction (Williams, H. 2002).
Cremation also enhanced relationships between the living and the dead, as a rite of passage served to
dissolve and reconstitute not only the identities of the dead but also those of the mourners. Cremation
rites are social events that aim to re form the dead in the eyes of society and the world (Williams, H.
2002).
Many Anglo Saxon cremation burials have been compared to pagan burials, and are also believed to
be also the same thing as the Anglo Saxon gods Woden, Thunor and Tiw are seen in runes on the
cremation urns and in grave goods Many Anglo Saxon cremation burials (Williams, H. 2002).
Whetstones have also been found in cremation rites as well as holed urns, runic pot decorations and
bones fragments from sacrificed animals, these are believed to also link the Anglo Saxon s with pagan
burials as these are common pagan elements found in similar burials (Williams, H. 2002).
Cremation is believed to have held meaning spiritually to the Anglo Saxons, that burning the dead
may have released its spirit, that by doing so this may have also stopped the dead from hurting

Analysis Of Breath, Eyes, Memory By Edwidge Danticat
It is not always strenuous to acknowledge when a mistake is made for some, in fact it can be seen as a
challenge. Especially for adults and adolescents confessing when a mistake is made is nearly
impossible. Yet everyone male, female, young and old make mistakes. It is natural for a person to
make multitudinous mistakes throughout their lifetime. In the book Breath, Eyes, Memory by
Edwidge Danticat the main character, Sophie Caco, has a laborious time confessing to her selfish
mistakes leading to her being torn between her self love and love with her husband.. For someone to
admit to his or her mistakes to themselves may feel as if he or she was irrational. Sophie Caco begins
her journey at twelve years old when she first moves from Haiti to New York. As a young child,
Sophie s mother abandoned because she relocated to New York due to her psychiatric instability. For
the first time at twelve years old Sophie was able to reunite with mother. Previously, Sophie lived with
her aunt and her grandmother, both were mother figures to Sophie. When Sophie was able to live with
her mother again their connect was not as powerful as her mother hoped it would be. Over the years
Sophie began to learn the ways of an American, as her grandmother would say. Sophie made a mistake
of letting her self conscious thoughts overcome her day to day life. At twenty years old Sophie was
married to Joseph and had their first child named Brigette. Sophie began struggling with eating after
giving birth due to her thinking that she became overweight: ...I looked through my wallet for some
pictures that I had brought with me, there was one of Brigitte, all shriveled up, a few hours after she
was born. I almost refused to let Joseph take pictures of me with her. I was too ashamed of the stitches
on my stomach and the flabs of fat all over my body... (Danticat 127). Sophie was unable to look at
herself the same from giving birth to her first born child. The mental thought of her being fat led her to
think that she has failed as a wife. It was a mistake for her to think this because her husband, Joseph,
was in love with her deeply. He only cared about keeping Sophie happy in spite of him being the same
age as Sophie s mother. Joseph was a

The reasons why American people do not vote Essay
The reasons why many Americans do not vote
America is a free country, and voting is an important part of that freedom. Unlike other countries
where dictators and monarchs make decisions on behalf of the people, Americans get the right to
decide who runs the country and what laws should govern citizens. But even though voting is an
important privilege, most Americans simply don t vote, and some of their reasons may surprise you.
Here are seven common reasons most Americans don t vote.
1. They think their vote won t count
Many Americans don t vote because they think their vote doesn t count. This is a common excuse that
s rooted in the belief that the Electoral College chooses the President, not the voters. In reality, the
popular vote in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you don t voice your opinion by voting, you shouldn t have the right to voice your complaints when
things don t go the way you want them to.
5. Lines are too long
Voting lines can sometimes be long, and for busy people waiting in line is a horrible waste of time and
energy. But in reality, voting lines are seldom long, even for high profile presidential races. With the
advent of new technology, voting is becoming easier and more efficient than ever before, and this
allows voters to get in and out without having to wait in long lines. This excuse is becoming less and
less relevant as time goes on.
6. Don t like the candidates
Politicians are sometimes easy to dislike. Their flaws are often aired publicly for the entire world to
see, and many people generally distrust politicians based on this information. But even if you don t
particularly like any of the candidates, do you really know them? And should it matter whether you
like them or not? Perhaps a politician s stance on issues important to you is more important than
whether or not they are likeable. Even if it s choosing the lesser of two or more evils in your eyes,
voting is still an important way for you to voice your opinion about the subjects you care about most.
5. Can t get to the polls
Getting to polling locations can be a hassle, especially for the disabled, the sick, and people without
transportation. In addition, voting becomes even more difficult for

Thin Layer Chromotography Discussion
Thin Layer Chromotography Discussion and Conclusion
Easton Montgomery
Discussion:
In thin layer chromatography a liquid is pumped across a bed of particles. The liquid that is pumped
across is called the mobile phase and the particles are the stationary phase. A mixture of the molecules
that will be separated is put into the mobile phase. Thin layer chromatography tells you/helps you
determine the number of compounds in a mixture, the purity of a compound, and the identity of
compounds if you have examples to pull information from. Thin layer chromatography is used to
separate nonvolatile mixtures. The dye that was the most polar was the color red and pink which was
Rhodamine B and the least polar was the light pink color which was Sudan IV. Our first TLC plate had

You can use thin layer chromatography for quantitative analysis to some extent. If you use solutions of
known concentrations and compare the unknown to the standards, then you can gain some quantitative
information. You can also calculate Rf values taking the distance traveled divided by the total distance
of the eluent. After we chopped up our spinach leaf we used hexane and ethanol to separate out
compounds in our leaf. After adding water, we removed the top layer and spotted a TLC plate to
separate out our compounds. We also used a mixture of hexane/ethyl acetate (1:1) and hexane/ethyl
acetate (20:1) to use as our developing solution. The (1:1) solution gave use six compounds separated
out on a TLC plate with xanthophyll being the most polar and carotene being the least polar. On the
other hand, the (20:1) solution gave us one compound that moved through our TLC plate. Looking at
the plate it seems like it is the carotene that moved while everything else remained near the polar side
of the plate. The most polar molecule was Rhodamine B (bright pink red) then Fast Green (blue) then
we had a clear compound show up, then Bismark Brown (yellow orange) and the least polar
compound was Sudan IV

Analysis Of Facing It By Yusef Komunyakaa
Facing It is a poem by Yusef Komunyakaa. It is a poem in which the writer uses imagery and
figurative language to express his feelings and his thoughts. He expresses his strong emotions towards
the Vietnam War because he was a veteran. During the poem, he reflects on his thoughts from the war
while he was at the Vietnam Veteran Memorial.
The speaker is visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. In the beginning of the poem, he is trying to
hold back his tears. He is trying to remain strong and brave. When he is at the Vietnam Veteran s
Memorial, he comes across the name Andrew Johnson. As the readers of this poem, I have no clue
who Andrew Johnson is. Andrew Johnson could be someone that was close to him during the war. At
the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, you can see your reflection through the walls. The walls at the
memorial are how the narrator speaks about his reflections and what he can see through the walls. The
very last few lines of the poem are when he sees a reflection of a white vet in the Vietnam Veterans
Memorial.
In lines 1 2, my black face fades, hiding inside the black granite he is speaking about how his face is
literally black from the granite wall. He is also speaking how the kind of person we show to the world.
We do not always show who we truly are, people only show the side of their personality that they want
people to see. From these two lines, the narrator brings up the main theme of this poem. In lines 3 5,
the writer is expressing his feelings or he is at least trying not to, he tries to hold back his emotions
from the war. He wants to remain strong because he says, I m stone and flesh He is not literally saying
that he is stone but he is a person that has been through a lot and even after everything he is still alive.
In lines 6 9, imagery is the only thing being used because he is only speaking about his reflection and
how it relates to the granite stone. In lines 10 13, he says, I am inside the Vietnam Veterans Memorial .
From this line, part of the narrator is still stuck at the war. He brings up light and how he wants it to
make a difference. Light is symbolized for how we represent ourselves to others and the kind of
person we truly are. It also plays a big part in the poem

The Adventures Of The Speckled Band By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
The Adventures of the Speckled Band , by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a mystery story in which a
detective, Sherlock Holmes, investigated the strange happenings that had occurred in
Stoke Moran Manor during 1883, early April in England. It all began with a woman named Helen
Stoner, who visited Sherlock and his assistant Dr. Watson. They listened intently as Helen explained
how her sister Julia died years ago on the eve of her wedding. Helen was frightened for her life, with
her own impending wedding. The mood was anxious while the tone was serious, as Helen s story
became darker. When her sister died, the only clues she left behind before her sudden death were that
she saw a speckled band and heard constant whistles in the night, which Helen heard as well. The
evidence had momentarily led Sherlock to believe that gypsies had murdered her. Helen s stepfather,
Dr. Roylott seemed to be an awfully suspicious character, especially considering his hot temper, or his
background of committing crimes, including killings; furthermore, there was proof that Dr. Roylott
had handled Helen viciously, leaving marks on her wrist. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson concluded
that the matter was indeed serious; therefore they decided to take action that day by analyzing more
clues at the Manor itself. Nobody was aware of the trouble that lurked outside the front door.
Sherlock and Dr. Watson investigated the wills that Ms. Stoner s mother left behind; all of a sudden
there was a knock at the

Leeds; the cheapest being £80,000 in Albion Street and the most expensive being £577,165 in Alredale

The more recent the transaction, the better indication I have to value the rent. The most recent
transaction of an office building similar to Aquis House was on 01/03/2014. Devonshire House on
Toronto Street is 0.1 miles away from Aquis House. Extensive refurbishment took place in 2009 to
create an imposing modern building. Both buildings are situated in the prime city Centre location. The
asking rent for Devonshire House is £20.00 per sq ft. The next useful comparable to help value Aquis
House is Park Row House which again is of very close proximity being at 0.02 miles away and a
similar size at 6,316 sq ft. Park Row unlike Aquis House has extra amenities such as car parking
spaces. The asking rent for Park Row House is £19.45 per sq ft. 73 75 Albion Street is also a useful
property to use as a comparable as it was built in the same time period as Aquis House and both
buildings have been refurbished to the same specification. The date of this transaction was 01/05/2013
so this gives a good indication to the value rent. The asking rent for 73 75 Albion Street is £16 per sq

Factors Affecting Labor Productivity And Their Affect...
Q1. Factors affecting Labor productivity and their affect levels? Ans. The Factors that can affect the
labor productivity are discussed below: 1. Overtime is the major factor that can affect the productivity
rate. Planning of expanded work days or weeks surpassing a standard eight hour work day or 40 hour
work week brings down work yield and productivity through physical weariness and poor mental
demeanor. 2. Joint ownership: This happens when work is booked using a similar office or work range
that must be shared or possessed by more than one specialty, and not foreseen in the first offer or plan.
3. Beneficial occupancy: This is an aftereffect of working over, around, or in nearness to different
specialties, proprietor s faculty, or generation hardware, which may bring about commotion
confinements, tidy, or different risky hazard. This may likewise forestall or cause get to limitations. 4.
Errors and Omissions: Increments in errors and omissions affect on work profitability since changes
are then ordinarily performed on a crash premise, out of grouping, cause weakening of supervision, or
whatever other negative effects. 5. Crew size inefficiency: This is the point at which the ideal group
size is modified by including or erasing team individuals. At the point when specialists are included or
erased from a group, it separates the first collaboration and beat of the team and results in loss of
profitability. 6. Logistics: Deficient or poor material handling,

Picture Framing Objects
While paintings and photography are among the most popular items many display on their walls, there
is a variety of options available when it comes to decorating walls at home. Trying the unique
souvenirs and heirlooms picture framing objects will give a home a highly personalized and unique
piece of decoration.
A custom frame displays a piece of heirloom jewelry in a very unique way instead of it being hidden
in a jewelry box. If an antique brooch is hand wrapped in a fabric mat and covered with an ornate gold
molding, it will give a very stunning display on the walls of a home.
Similarly, a vintage scarf in a frame that is handcrafted transforms an everyday accessory into a very
beautiful piece of art. These individually owned pieces which ... Show more content on

A collage display due to a wonderful arrangement in a den or in the living room will surely trigger
conversations now and again in many homes.
Picture framing can also be used as a thoughtful personalized gift. If a family loves a particular music
genre, then presenting a picture frame of their favorite artist and present it to a family member will be
a gift of its kind.
This idea is applicable for those people who are extremely rich and have unpredictable gift
preferences. For example a hip hop lover can be given a framed picture of Rick Ross coupled with his
latest music in a simple wood shadowbox. This gift will be considered as a timeless gift that they will
forever cherish and display forever in their study rooms, living rooms and offices.
A wall decoration does not necessarily need to be kept solely for photographs and paintings. If you are
looking to decorate the interior of a house with something different other than oil painting or
watercolor, then picture framing of treasured family memories is a really wonderful way to transcend
a keepsake into a mouth watering piece of

Australian Aborigines and their Crisis
Australia s Aborigines are often hailed as the world s longest surviving culture, easily dating back
60,000 years, existing long before many ancient societies such as the Greeks and Romans. Since they
are such an old culture many people wonder how they were able to remain in existence for so long
while of culture perished around them. The answer can be found in their adaptive nature; having such
a close bound with the land around them, taught the aboriginals the importance of change and
adapting (Australia.gov.au). While it might be debatable that Australia s natives are the longest
surviving culture, there is no doubt that the Aborigines animistic religion is the oldest existing. Their
religion is ripe with multiple different gods, often represented in the forms of animals or notable
landscape features. There is no one central god, instead many deities were spread across the continent
of Australia, each spirit fulfilling their role in the world. Creation beings were involved in the creation
of the world, ancestral beings taught humans how to hunt and make weapons, totemic beings were the
original form of animals. Being a culture that places high emphasize on their religion, many of the dot
art, a form of painting or drawing that involves creating hundreds of small dots to create the overall
picture, is often found in caves or the sides of rocks, the some

Sublime In Frankenstein Essay
Most Gothic novels aim to show the sinister side of human nature. They depict the dark terrors which
lie beneath the reader s mentality. The term Gothic suggests a genre which deals with frightening and
mysterious settings by giving connotations of ghostly castles and supernatural events. The Sublime
experience as stated by the critic Longinus is, …a matter of treatment. The particular form of the
sublime experience that requires prepossessing objects is not only the form; it is simply the form in
which enthusiasm preponderates over irony [1] . The Castle of Otranto is the first Gothic novel written
by Horace Walpole in which the idea of the Sublime is presented through its physical, transcending
and overpowering imagery. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Edmund Burke a theorist stated in his works that, …Whatever is fitted in any sort to excite the ideas
of pain and danger; that is to say, whatever is in any sort terrible, or is conversant about terrible
objects or operates in a manner analogous to terror, is a source of the sublime [2] . The critic attempts
to assemble an authoritative definition of the sublime here. Furthermore Gothic castles were built as
symbols of systematic power; they were definite assertions of ambition that rested on the owner s
control of others. A sense of empowerment is suggested through this idea therefore indicating to the
Sublime having a dominant role in the Gothic genre. Intended to convey a disputing power, Walpole
implies images of force, hierarchy, stability and command in the novel. The Castle Of Otranto,
attempts to capture a sense of realism through its illustration of settings and characters. Burke
commented that: whatever is fitted to produce such a tension must be productive of a passion similar
to terror; and consequently must be a source of the sublime, though it should have no idea of danger
connected with it [3] . Consequently the Sublime is shown to be produced by a passion which is
closely related to terror, this is evident through the tension created by the settings and characters; a
sense of terror is illustrated. The novel was an original Gothic behind the overthrow of the Roman
Empire, therefore Gothic at the time applied to

The Pearl, By John Steinbeck
Most people would consider finding a piece of jewelry worth large sums of money a wonderful stroke

when he discovered the greatest pearl in the world at the point in his life when he needed it most his
son having just being stung by a scorpion and needing expensive medical treatment. However, when
the pearl buyers try to swindle him and then send assassins to kill him, burn his house, and destroy his

He very plainly puts, For his boat smashed, his baby dead, and the pearl cast into the sea, he has less
when the story is over than he had when it started (140).
Commentator Sydney Krause who takes a similar approach describes Kino s returning of the pearl to
the sea as a desperate act of defeat at the hands of the pearl s evil nature (156). Stephen George calls
Coyotito Kino s real pearl and writes that his death will follow Kino for the rest of his life (95). Kino
does eventually rid himself of the pearl but not before it has destroyed almost everything that he cares
for (Lisca 292). The loss of his livelihood, the death of his son, and the forfeiture of the pearl make
Kino s position at the end of the novel seem morose. On the other hand, other critics see the novel as
optimistic because they believe that Kino redeems himself when he throws the pearl back into the
ocean. In the last paragraph of the novel, Steinbeck makes a hard shift from a deep melancholy tone to
a calm peaceful tone a shift that has aroused the interests of many Steinbeck readers. He uses the word
lovely and the color green multiple times in just a few sentences to show the peacefulness of the pearl
s new resting place (90). On further reflection, some critics have picked up on the subtle

Examples Of Contradictions In A Clockwork Orange
Contradictions or dualities as portrayed in the novella A Clockwork Orange.
Duality is the state of having two parts or aspects (Oxford Dictionary of Current English, 2006:274).
The novel A Clockwork Orange is full of dualities, for an example; good versus evil. In the following
essay, the aim is to explore the concept of contradictions or dualities as portrayed in the novella A
Clockwork Orange.
A Clockwork Orange portrays the concept of good versus evil. It is usual to think of good and evil as
two poles, two opposite directions, the antithesis of one another.... We must begin by doing away with
this convention (Buber: 1938). One has to disagree with Buber, good and evil are two opposite poles
because they both deal with different aspects and values. The conflict amongst good and evil becomes
difficult in A Clockwork Orange, since the novel actually presents the fight between enforced good
and evil that is done voluntary. Alex is a teenager who gets a thrill ... Show more content on

Designing A New Design For A Distributed Operating System
As the Chief Information Officer working in my business, I will be proposing a new design for the
current network to attempt to improve the quality and productivity of 250 client computers and 50
servers. My first decision would be to opt to change the system to a distributed operating system
(DOS). I would choose this course of action because instead of centralizing all the resources on one
server, which could lead to problems in the event of a hardware failure, you could distribute them

with ( Definition of Distributed n.d). Although this model will be much more expensive to implement,
I believe that it will lead to better growth in the future. The reliability of the network will be increased,
which leaves room for improvement, adding more client systems, or even servers. Updating the
operating system to a distributed operating system will increase the overall size and reliability of the
database for subscribers to use. The current server operating system would be Windows Server 2003. I
d make minor changes to the server operating system upgrading to a later version like 2008 or 2012. I
chose Windows over Linux, MAC, and other server OS because I think its performance is suitable for
this type of environment. Windows itself has a high support for most functions (Janowski, 2003).
While Linux is a good operating system, getting support in my opinion would be

Apple Is Going Up Against Market Leader Spotify, Jay Z s...
Full Speed Ahead, Apple Jumps In the Music Streaming Service Market for the First Time. Authors
Mark Schneider and Andrew Flanagan of Billboard magazine state, Apple is going up against market
leader Spotify, Jay Z S Tidal and other streaming upstart services. Throughout the music industry,
musicians, record companies, and music publishers are crying foul for, not getting paid for their music
during a three month trial period done by Apple s new streaming service. Is Apple taking appropriate
steps to be competitive in the streaming service market, is the company, avoiding any distractions they
may have to be successful, more importantly do they meet the concerns of the music streaming
community and showing good moral principles in doing so? Authors Schneider and Flanagan, state
approximate a year ago, Apple took step number 1, jumping into the streaming services market for the
first time, by purchasing Beasts for three billion dollars. Beast, a hibernating streaming service at the
time, is co founded by record producers Dr, Dre and Jimmy Lovine; the two of them joined Apple in
executive roles said the authors. Streaming music is moving away from algorithms, where the music
being generated by computer to the more modern version called human curation said Schneider and
Flanagan. Human curation for example, when one knows music very well, such as an artist therefore,
he or she can make better recommendations or advice selecting from a playlist compared to a search

The Romantic Period Of Music During The Romantic Era
The romantic period of music began in the 1820s and with it came a change of stylistic features.
Beethoven largely impacted the new way that the music of the Romantic era was viewed. He made
people perceive music as a true form of art made to be taken seriously, rather than just a fun time
passer. Another reason for the change of music during that time was due to nationalism and exoticism.
Nationalism promoted music, such as folk songs and dances, which was created for the purpose of
supporting the nation. Exoticism had the opposite effect as nationalism. It caused audiences to listen to
folk music from other nations and it allowed people to have a better understanding of unique qualities
and cultures of surrounding nations. These factors led to the music during the Romantic period
becoming more personal and emotion than it was in the previous classical era, although it still
contained a melody, harmony, tone color, and a form. Much of the music from the Romantic era can
be recognized by its melody. The melodies became wider, more irregular, and dramatic during this
time. The harmony of Romantic music was further advanced as well. The composers learned how to
use harmony to build the melody and intensify its emotionality, while at the same time experimenting
freely with new chords. The tone color of music during this time was expanded allowing the quality of
the sound of the music to improve. One of the most important changes that were made to the features
of music during

Charles Augustus Lindbergh s Influence On Aviation
Charles Augustus Lindbergh, or Slim to his close friend, was a simple airmail pilot who gained world
fame for his record breaking flight across the Atlantic. He is often considered the greatest aviator of all
time, and using his fame, has played a large role in the development promotion of aviation and even
space travel. Charles Augustus Lindbergh s life began on February 4th, 1902 in Detroit, Michigan.
Shortly afterward, the Lindberghs moved to Little Falls, Minnesota into a house they called Lindholm.
He grew up on their Minnesota farm with his two half sisters Eva, Lillian, and parents Evangeline

meeting with Charles. Together, Bixby, Knight, and Lindbergh agreed on a budget of $15,000. Charles
first contacted Wright Bellanca Flight Corporation to try to buy a plane, but was refused, being told
that they did not want to put the new plane on the line by choosing Lindbergh, a new and unproven
pilot. Charles`s next target was the Dutch aircraft manufacturer Fokker. He was unfortunately turned
down as well for the same reasons, even though they suspected that he could make the flight. A
telegram later came, from a small Aircraft Company in southwestern California called Ryan. They
offered to design and manufacture a custom Ryan M 2 specially for the flight for only $6,000.
Lindbergh made some more attempts to get a Fokker but to no avail, forcing him to accept Ryan`s
offer. He flew himself down to California to help design and oversee manufacturing of the aircraft. His
first impression of the company was one of high disappointment. The Ryan factory was an old fish

he was feeling much better about choosing the small company. He was very

Marketers spend huge amounts of dollars a year globally persuading individuals into consumer
lifestyles that has had consequences of wastefulness and buying things we do not need (Beder, 1998).
Advertisements exploit people s securities, create false needs and offer dishonest solutions. The
bottom line of advertisements is the creation of dissatisfaction to cause consumption. Youth are most
prone to this kind of product manipulation (Tepperman Curtis, 2013). Marketers are targeting young
children since they easily influence their parents spending. Traditionally, marketing concentrated on

In 1991, Sweden banned all the advertisements in children prime hours after research established that
children below the age of nine were incapable of differentiating commercial ads and programs and
could not comprehend the purpose of marketing until the age of 12 years. Research from American
Psychological Association (APA) indicates that children under the age of eight cannot comprehend
televised advertised messages and readily accept the advertiser s message as truthful and accurate.
This leads to unhealthy feeding habits as proved by the increased cases of obesity. This paper will
critically analyze the current marketing situation and its impact on the children.

The order and stability of the society are cognizant to a consensus on the values, norms and the
interconnected parts of the community (Tepperman Curtis, 2013). The maintenance of the society is
dependent on the different parts fulfilling their functions which are evident in the analogy of society
and biological organisms. The body is made up of many organs which must work together for the
living organism to survive (Tepperman Curtis, 2013). Similarly, social institutions must work together
for the survival of the society. Media contributes to the maintenance of the society by surveilling the

Ancient Greece s Influence On Modern Day Fashion
Ancient Greece is not just ancient history, there is a relation between ancient Greece to modern day in
several different ways. Few relations are seen in fashion, architecture, and sculpting. To see ancient
Greece still have a relation in the 21st century is remarkable. The hallmark of ancient Greek fashion
was elaborate draping, not much detail and can also see images of Greek styles painted on pottery.
You see in today s clothing the white one shoulder dress for women which is considered a formal

They used marble, stone, limestone, and clay to create their sculptures. That has helped us create the
base of the materials we use today for sculpting and even with architecture. In modern day

architectural influence is still seen mostly at formal banquet halls today. The columns in entry ways,

The First Trip I Went On Campus At San Diego State University
The first trip I went on was a community outreach trip to the children s daycare, on campus at San
Diego State University. This being my first trip, I was not sure what to expect. Initially, I did not think
the children would be interested in oral hygiene, however, since we promoted healthy oral hygiene
through games, the children were fascinated in what we had to say and show them. It was shocking
how few of these children knew how to properly floss and teaching them how to was definitely a
challenge. Most of the kids were unable to grip the floss with both of their tiny hands but it was
admirable how much determination they had despite their struggles, and it showed how much they
really wanted to learn how to floss. Even though most of the children were actively participating, there
were some who were very shy and too timid to participate, which made me realize that when I am
dentist I will often be working with children who are very shy and I have to make sure that they are
comfortable around me. Ultimately, this trip showed me that I am going to be working with hundreds
of patients, none of which are the same and it will be my job to do whatever I can to make them
comfortable in my office and care. The second trip I attended, which was a TRACE trip, was another
very rewarding experience. The adults we were presenting to were so eager to learn and participate, it
was enlightening how excited they were. One thing I especially liked about this trip was that Sam

Symbolism In The Nightmare Before Christmas
The Nightmare Before Christmas starts off in a town that the movie revolves around the whole movie,
which is Halloweentown. In this town, they have a Pumpkin King, who is the ruler of the town, and
his name is Jack Skellington. Jack begins to feel bored of the same old holiday they have every year,
Halloween, and he soon stumbles upon trees that are decorated with symbols for each holiday. Jack is
intrigued by the door that has a bright green christmas tree on it decorated with little painted on
ornaments. He opens the door and falls into the tree and gets transported into Christmasland. He
explores the small land that he was pulled into, and then he returns home to tell his town about the
place that he has just discovered. He tells them that they are going to make their own Christmas. The
town teamed up and worked on making terrifying toys to bring joy to the children and to give Santa a

delivering presents to the kids of the world. Sally, who has always secretly admired Jack, told him she
had a bad vision that stealing Christmas was a terrible idea, but Jack didn t listen. Jack finally got on
his sleigh with his skeletal reindeer and rode off into the night delivering presents. Every house he
went to called the police because the toys were trying to kill them and eventually the military was

Social Darwinism And The Progressive Era
2. Already in the late 19th century, the American Federation of Labor had begun to represent a
growing segment of the American population discontented with the status quo of corporate
exploitation. At the onset of the 20th century however this message began to take particular weight, as
evidenced by the tripling of the AFL s membership and the rise of the Industrial Workers of the World.
Labor unions, the Socialist Party and progressives as a whole took issue with the doctrine of Social
Darwinism and moved forward as a somewhat united front with the goal of bringing meaningful
change to American society. As America made the transition into an industrial power in the latter half
of the 19th century, Social Darwinism became a prevalent method of rationalizing massive inequality
and widespread poverty. This doctrine of leaving the poorest in the nation to uplift themselves from
abject hardship without being provided any means to do so was exemplified as the American
population became increasingly concentrated in cities. Poor families would often go without
electricity or indoor toilets. Staggering inequality continued into the Progressive era. It was estimated
that J.P. Morgan s financial firm controlled 40 percent of all financial and industrial capital in the
nation. The largest conclaves of organized labor, the Industrial Workers of the World and the American
Federation of Labor, sought to tackle the stifling economic and political climate through sharply

Do People Who Are Trafficking Human Organs Help Other People?
(Campbell Davison, 2012), say that the unlawful business in human organs special kidneys has
advanced quickly and unexpectedly. The reasons why selling kidneys has advanced quickly is that
nowadays many countries have wars so there are many poor people who need money to live a good
life. Also, after wars, there are many sick people that felt desperation because they lost their organs in
the war and no one donated to them, so they needed to buy organs to stay alive. Other reason is
because people have two kidneys so when they sell one kidney for important reasons, they won t die.

her kidney in the accident. She needed another kidney. In Kuwait, you can t buy an organ, so she
waited for anyone to donate a kidney for her but no one did. She felt desperate. Her brother Khalid
found a poor family that they want money to live a good life. He persuaded one person in this family
to give Fatima a kidney for money. He accepted what Khalid wanted, and he went with Khalid to the
doctors. They lied to the doctor by saying he wanted to donate to Fatima because he couldn t say she

Some critics may argue, however, that it is the greed of the middleman which creates illegal
trafficking of human organs. There is a great profit to be made by the middle man, so oftentimes the
unscrupulous become organ traders. Researchers point out that trafficking will continue as long as
there are huge profits to be made (Caplan Arp, 2013). For example,Randall Gross,2008) writes a story

located. The Maritime Tropical air mass highly influences Kalalau Valley, Kauai. With its warm and
humid weather that it brings in we see how the Island of Kauai goes from stable to conditionally
unstable. The convectional lifting of the air masses around the Island of Kauai shows how an air mass

Power, Heat and Revenge Equals Death
Abraham Lincoln once said, Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man s
character, give him power. This quote coincides with the short story Heat because power revealed the
true character of each individual, controlling their actions and analyzing how it affected others around
them. Power and revenge are a few themes that were highlighted in the short story Heat by Joyce
Carol Oates. Oates examines the mysterious and more horrifying aspects of life. What happened to the
little girls is revealed by inference and minimal description of the scene. She carefully told the story
from the eyes of a child, giving her readers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The story ends with the narrator saying, I wasn t there, but some things you know (Oates 143). The
friend/narrator explains that she was not there for the death of the girls but somehow, she knew a great
amount of information and detail about how the girls were killed. Roger Berlind, a literary analyst at
the University of Michigan stated that, Many literary analysts believe that the friend or narrator
actually was there helping Roger Whipple to kill the girls and they may have even been raped by
Roger. In essence that was her form of revenge to get back at them for abusing their powers. Roger
carefully planned his revenge by saying He could only take one of them upstairs to his room at a time,
he didn t say why (Oates 144). Roger Whipple revenges by completely tricking the girls into thinking
that he needed to show them something cool in his room but he actually said that so he could kill
them. Also, there is a form of revenge by having the girls` murderer, Roger Whipple, buried in the
same place as the girls were. The idea of revenge found in the short story relates to the thesis because
it explains the results of having too much power and abusing

Descriptive Essay On Being A Waitress
It s always nice to go out to eat, order a nice meal that you do not have to cook and be served
everything you want. When going out to eat, have you ever thought about the person that is serving
you food, getting you drinks, and making sure you have a pleasant experience at the restaurant of your
choice? That person is a server. He or she is a waiter or waitress. I ve gone out to eat a lot, and I ve
always been a little curious what is like to be the person serving the food and not eating it. I chose to
research this subculture because I was so curious about it. I have some friends that wait tables, but I
hadn t really thought about how being a waitress involves so many things aside from serving food.
Waitressing is more about handling all different types of people, and learning to multitask successfully
than just serving food. When I go out to eat, I usually only notice if the waitress or waiter is nice to me
and my party. I make sure that all of the food and drinks come out the way we ordered them, and I
also pay attention to how the food tastes. When I started my research and observation for this
ethnography, I started to pay more attention the server when I was eating at restaurants. I started to
notice how many tables the server waited on, I noticed how many times he or she had to take food
back to the kitchen because someone thought it was wrong or not cooked right, and I also noticed how
unhappy he or she was when they left a certain table. I have also

Vermeer In Bosnia By Lawrence Weschler
In the text Vermeer in Bosnia by Lawrence Weschler, Weschler builds an argument surrounding the
need of inventing peace . Throughout the text, Weschler refers to different individuals to build up his
claim. In each part, Weschler focuses and describes each individual as a unique existence. From
murders to peacemakers, from past to present, Wechsler individualizes them from their groups in order
to look at each with an unbiased, holistic point of view, developing a clear goal for achieving peace.
To further develop his argument, Weschler focuses on Jan Vermeer, an artist who spent his entire life

Legacy, on the other hand, is clearly defined and nearly constant even as a large span of time has
passed. Vermeer does include legacies, but with limited use, cutting off a reliable source to back up his
argument. The use of interpretations allows his argument to be disputed and possibly rejected. After
years of continuous violence and war, it is unlikely to seek out and prosecute the few that initiated the
conflict since they are most likely no longer around anymore. Even if a descendant is found,
individuality alone may not suffice for prosecution, nor will it necessarily be a step towards inventing
peace. They might as well put up a random stranger, make up a case, and claim to have prosecuted the
root of the evil. On the other hand, prosecuting a family known to have a legacy of criminal and
inhumane acts is much more likely to lead to step towards inventing peace. Though it may disregard
the individuals involved, it will truly be the end of one bloody legacy.
There are many instances where legacy trumps the interpreted individuality. In Ta Nehisi Coates
article The First White President , he brings up the idea of the white legacy aka the bloody heirloom
and uses it to describe Donald Trump s presidency. Coates develops an argument surrounding

John F Kennedy Camelot Analysis

Camelot , the dream of a new American renaissance that accompanied John F. Kennedy s election as

To me the most obvious relation to the bible is in a scene where the main character David (Tobey
Maguire) is the first to see a fire that breaks out in a tree in his front yard. Ironically enough, the tree is
on fire, but is not consumed by the flames, it s burning but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The serpent eventually persuades Eve to eat from the Tree of Knowledge . After she eats from it, she
has Adam eat from it. Shortly after, they finally notice they are naked and become self conscious and
cover up. God then asks about what they have done and Eve blames Adam, while Adam blames the
Serpent. God curses them, and makes Eve suffer through labor and banishes both of them from the
Garden of Eden. The relation in the movies comes from a scene in the end involving David and
another girl from his school. Color starts to fill Pleasantville, and the girl he is sitting with in the lawn
gets up and grabs a fruit of off the tree, and then she hands the fruit to David to eat, much like Eve did
with Adam. As soon as they ate the fruit, it started to rain in Pleasantville for the first time ever,
symbolizing God s anger, and color now completely filled Pleasantville. The discovery in books also
reminds me of the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil , the books being good, and the reading of
them being evil because it made people curious to as what else was out in the real world. Therefore
there is an effect in both cases, the biblical one, and also the movie.
Pleasantville, (before David and Jennifer) is a dream world if you will, everyone is always happy and
there are never any conflicts with anyone. Once the two of them arrive however, everything changes.
In Pleasantville everything is black and white, but after Jennifer has sex

Pros And Cons Of The Transcontinental Railroad
The Transcontinental Railroad and the American Government System The Transcontinental Railroad
is a contiguous network of railroad track that crosses a continental landmass with terminals at different
oceans or continental borders. Construction began in 1863 and concluded in 1868; the tracks stretched
1,776 miles long, connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The idea of building this monumental
rail line was present in America decades before the Pacific Railroad Acts of 1862 authorized the
construction. The Pacific Railroad Acts were passed because at the end of the American Civil War, the
southern Democrats (who opposed the idea) were now absent from Congress; therefore, the
republicans ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Established in 1842, the US House Senate Committees have looked back at the railroad and used it to
advance the ways and means of transporting goods, supplies, mail, and people. Look at what it has
done; it has served as an artery, moving what is needed throughout the entire nation from the Atlantic
to the Pacific. From giving jobs to those minority groups and once former slaves after the Civil War,
throwing the stock market and economy left and right, assisting Abraham Lincoln in winning elections
and also winning the Civil War, helping rebuild the South and the nation s economy from the bottom
up during the reconstruction era, taming the Wild West (which has a major direct influence on the
American Government System), serving as one of the best ways of getting mail to citizens across the
US, and expanding intercontinental trade to have its own manifest destiny. This railroad had a
significant affect in the growth of this nation and its government. It s relationship and way it impacts
the government is a result from multiple chain reactions that originated from the 1860s, 70s, 80s, etc.
and I strongly believe, after all of my research, that our nations governmental system would be many
decades behind if it wasn t for the transcontinental

Kidwatching Project Analysis
For the Kidwatching Project Part 1, I found myself interviewing a few students on the concept of
multiplication and division. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, multiplication is defined as the
process of adding a number to itself a certain number of times: the act or process of multiplying
numbers. Merriam Webster Dictionary also defines Division to be the act or process of dividing
something into parts: the way that something is divided (Merriam Webster, 2015). Multiplication and
Division is a subject that many different students in early ages can grasp or struggle with because the
concept of using different ways to approach these particular problems. Many kindergarten children

M Ā Ori Cultural Concepts Essay
Culture is not one distinct commodity. Culture is the integrated pattern of belief, human knowledge
and behaviour that has transcended through generations. Māori are the indigenous people of New
Zealand. Māori Culture is collectively the beliefs and ideals followed by the Māori people mainly
through tradition and legend. The culture dates back to 1250 1300 Common Era (CE) when
Polynesians migrated to the long white cloud and it has remained prominent to this day due to the
practice of Māori cultural concepts. A cultural concept is a non tangible ideal that governs a society
and cannot be physically touched . There are numerous Māori cultural concepts however I am
focusing on the three I believe are most important: Mana, Tapu and Utu. I will elaborate on how these
cultural concepts are important in understanding Māori culture and society.
Firstly, I will begin with how mana is important in Māori society. Mana in its simplest form is
authority and power. The sources of mana include: mana tupuna, mana whenua, mana tangata and
mana atua. Mana tupuna is power that has been attained through descent. It ties the Māori people to
their ancestors. Mana also denotes the heritage, the myths and the legends, which define their place in
the world. Mana tupuna is power through descent. It aids people in self identification through attaining
knowledge about their descendants. This cultural concept is correlated to Whakapapa, or genealogy.
Through reciting whakapapa, Māori are able to

Quentin Tarantino Research Paper
Quentin Tarantino is one of the most highly regarded film makers and directors in the film industry.
He has directed over 8 feature length films and is known for his unique style across different genres.
Tarantino s film career began in the 1980 s and has progressed since then, he is now one of the most
popular in the industry with his latest film the hateful eight making $4,610,676 (USA) in the opening
week. Due to his high popularity he also has a lot of attention from the media and the press. Each film
that he releases get highly critiqued and reviewed by various newspapers and journalists. After his
debut film Reservoir Dogs (1992) he has been loved for his unique style of film making with critiques
labelling him as an auteur.
The term ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When pulp fiction was released the press had all eyes on him as they eagerly awaited a follow up film
that they all hoped would be just as good as his previous film. When Pulp came out it was heavily
reviewed and critiqued across media platforms. This was when Tarantino first started to become
known as an auteur. Some critiques were calling his work art with Rolling Stones magazine saying
Tarantino s twist on the pulp genre is also damn near a work of art (Peter Travers, 1994). An argument
against this however is that Tarantino gets too much credit for his films and is seen as an overall
Author of each film. This however is not true.
When making a film there are many components. The director alone cannot control all of these
components therefor he/she cannot be considered a true auteur in the eyes of the critique if they think
that he/she is behind everything. For example, when it comes to editing a film, a director cannot stand
behind the editor and tell them every last detail he wants in the film, this part of creativity comes from
the editor alone. This is the same when it comes to cinematography. The cinematographer is the one
who chooses what each shot is going to look like on

  • 2. Social Darwinism Research Paper With the establishment of Europe and the uprising of many new nations and counties led European natives to gain knowledge of new ideologies of political and economic control. In the late nineteenth century a young naturalist and biologist from England by the name of Charles Darwin, created a theory that human beings, like animals and plants, compete in a struggle for existence. In which the theory of natural selection was crafted and resulted in Darwin s survival of the fittest . Scholars began to use the term Social Darwinism in order to describe the concept of Charles Darwin to explain the philosophical justification behind racism, politics, economics and social issues. Intellectuals also concluded that Social Darwinism rooted from Darwin s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to The Constitutional Rights Foundation, scholars of Social Darwinism believe that capitalism and society itself needs unlimited business competition to thrive in the American economy (2003). During the Gilded Age several American industries, monopolies and competing companies increased their control in production and the value of their goods. Men, women and children were employed and worked extensive hours for low pay and dangerous working environments. This resulted in large labor unions acting upon a strike towards their employer. However, at times judges also implemented the practice of laissez faire and issued court orders to end the strikes. • 3. The Importance Of Cremation Cremation Studies have provided an understanding and argue that the choice to cremate or bury the dead may have been one of the biggest decisions for the Anglo Saxons (Williams, H. 2002). But also, that we should take into consideration that cremation was a show and helped define social distinctions within the living society, as the inclusion in the rite would define your social distinction (Williams, H. 2002). Cremation also enhanced relationships between the living and the dead, as a rite of passage served to dissolve and reconstitute not only the identities of the dead but also those of the mourners. Cremation rites are social events that aim to re form the dead in the eyes of society and the world (Williams, H. 2002). Many Anglo Saxon cremation burials have been compared to pagan burials, and are also believed to be also the same thing as the Anglo Saxon gods Woden, Thunor and Tiw are seen in runes on the cremation urns and in grave goods Many Anglo Saxon cremation burials (Williams, H. 2002). Whetstones have also been found in cremation rites as well as holed urns, runic pot decorations and bones fragments from sacrificed animals, these are believed to also link the Anglo Saxon s with pagan burials as these are common pagan elements found in similar burials (Williams, H. 2002). Cremation is believed to have held meaning spiritually to the Anglo Saxons, that burning the dead may have released its spirit, that by doing so this may have also stopped the dead from hurting ... • 4. Analysis Of Breath, Eyes, Memory By Edwidge Danticat It is not always strenuous to acknowledge when a mistake is made for some, in fact it can be seen as a challenge. Especially for adults and adolescents confessing when a mistake is made is nearly impossible. Yet everyone male, female, young and old make mistakes. It is natural for a person to make multitudinous mistakes throughout their lifetime. In the book Breath, Eyes, Memory by Edwidge Danticat the main character, Sophie Caco, has a laborious time confessing to her selfish mistakes leading to her being torn between her self love and love with her husband.. For someone to admit to his or her mistakes to themselves may feel as if he or she was irrational. Sophie Caco begins her journey at twelve years old when she first moves from Haiti to New York. As a young child, Sophie s mother abandoned because she relocated to New York due to her psychiatric instability. For the first time at twelve years old Sophie was able to reunite with mother. Previously, Sophie lived with her aunt and her grandmother, both were mother figures to Sophie. When Sophie was able to live with her mother again their connect was not as powerful as her mother hoped it would be. Over the years Sophie began to learn the ways of an American, as her grandmother would say. Sophie made a mistake of letting her self conscious thoughts overcome her day to day life. At twenty years old Sophie was married to Joseph and had their first child named Brigette. Sophie began struggling with eating after giving birth due to her thinking that she became overweight: ...I looked through my wallet for some pictures that I had brought with me, there was one of Brigitte, all shriveled up, a few hours after she was born. I almost refused to let Joseph take pictures of me with her. I was too ashamed of the stitches on my stomach and the flabs of fat all over my body... (Danticat 127). Sophie was unable to look at herself the same from giving birth to her first born child. The mental thought of her being fat led her to think that she has failed as a wife. It was a mistake for her to think this because her husband, Joseph, was in love with her deeply. He only cared about keeping Sophie happy in spite of him being the same age as Sophie s mother. Joseph was a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The reasons why American people do not vote Essay The reasons why many Americans do not vote America is a free country, and voting is an important part of that freedom. Unlike other countries where dictators and monarchs make decisions on behalf of the people, Americans get the right to decide who runs the country and what laws should govern citizens. But even though voting is an important privilege, most Americans simply don t vote, and some of their reasons may surprise you. Here are seven common reasons most Americans don t vote. 1. They think their vote won t count Many Americans don t vote because they think their vote doesn t count. This is a common excuse that s rooted in the belief that the Electoral College chooses the President, not the voters. In reality, the popular vote in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If you don t voice your opinion by voting, you shouldn t have the right to voice your complaints when things don t go the way you want them to. 5. Lines are too long Voting lines can sometimes be long, and for busy people waiting in line is a horrible waste of time and energy. But in reality, voting lines are seldom long, even for high profile presidential races. With the advent of new technology, voting is becoming easier and more efficient than ever before, and this allows voters to get in and out without having to wait in long lines. This excuse is becoming less and less relevant as time goes on. 6. Don t like the candidates Politicians are sometimes easy to dislike. Their flaws are often aired publicly for the entire world to see, and many people generally distrust politicians based on this information. But even if you don t particularly like any of the candidates, do you really know them? And should it matter whether you like them or not? Perhaps a politician s stance on issues important to you is more important than whether or not they are likeable. Even if it s choosing the lesser of two or more evils in your eyes, voting is still an important way for you to voice your opinion about the subjects you care about most. 5. Can t get to the polls Getting to polling locations can be a hassle, especially for the disabled, the sick, and people without transportation. In addition, voting becomes even more difficult for ... The liquid that is pumped across is called the mobile phase and the particles are the stationary phase. A mixture of the molecules that will be separated is put into the mobile phase. Thin layer chromatography tells you/helps you determine the number of compounds in a mixture, the purity of a compound, and the identity of compounds if you have examples to pull information from. After we chopped up our spinach leaf we used hexane and ethanol to separate out compounds in our leaf. After adding water, we removed the top layer and spotted a TLC plate to separate out our compounds. We also used a mixture of hexane/ethyl acetate (1:1) and hexane/ethyl acetate (20:1) to use as our developing solution. The (1:1) solution gave use six compounds separated out on a TLC plate with xanthophyll being the most polar and carotene being the least polar. On the other hand, the (20:1) solution gave us one compound that moved through our TLC plate. Looking at the plate it seems like it is the carotene that moved while everything else remained near the polar side of the plate. • 7. Analysis Of Facing It By Yusef Komunyakaa Facing It is a poem by Yusef Komunyakaa. It is a poem in which the writer uses imagery and figurative language to express his feelings and his thoughts. He expresses his strong emotions towards the Vietnam War because he was a veteran. During the poem, he reflects on his thoughts from the war while he was at the Vietnam Veteran Memorial. The speaker is visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. In the beginning of the poem, he is trying to hold back his tears. He is trying to remain strong and brave. When he is at the Vietnam Veteran s Memorial, he comes across the name Andrew Johnson. As the readers of this poem, I have no clue who Andrew Johnson is. Andrew Johnson could be someone that was close to him during the war. At the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, you can see your reflection through the walls. The walls at the memorial are how the narrator speaks about his reflections and what he can see through the walls. The very last few lines of the poem are when he sees a reflection of a white vet in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. In lines 1 2, my black face fades, hiding inside the black granite he is speaking about how his face is literally black from the granite wall. He is also speaking how the kind of person we show to the world. We do not always show who we truly are, people only show the side of their personality that they want people to see. From these two lines, the narrator brings up the main theme of this poem. In lines 3 5, the writer is expressing his feelings or he is at least trying not to, he tries to hold back his emotions from the war. He wants to remain strong because he says, I m stone and flesh He is not literally saying that he is stone but he is a person that has been through a lot and even after everything he is still alive. In lines 6 9, imagery is the only thing being used because he is only speaking about his reflection and how it relates to the granite stone. In lines 10 13, he says, I am inside the Vietnam Veterans Memorial . From this line, part of the narrator is still stuck at the war. He brings up light and how he wants it to make a difference. Light is symbolized for how we represent ourselves to others and the kind of person we truly are. It also plays a big part in the poem ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Adventures Of The Speckled Band By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle The Adventures of the Speckled Band , by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a mystery story in which a detective, Sherlock Holmes, investigated the strange happenings that had occurred in Stoke Moran Manor during 1883, early April in England. It all began with a woman named Helen Stoner, who visited Sherlock and his assistant Dr. Watson. They listened intently as Helen explained how her sister Julia died years ago on the eve of her wedding. Helen was frightened for her life, with her own impending wedding. The mood was anxious while the tone was serious, as Helen s story became darker. When her sister died, the only clues she left behind before her sudden death were that she saw a speckled band and heard constant whistles in the night, which Helen heard as well. The evidence had momentarily led Sherlock to believe that gypsies had murdered her. Helen s stepfather, Dr. Roylott seemed to be an awfully suspicious character, especially considering his hot temper, or his background of committing crimes, including killings; furthermore, there was proof that Dr. Roylott had handled Helen viciously, leaving marks on her wrist. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson concluded that the matter was indeed serious; therefore they decided to take action that day by analyzing more clues at the Manor itself. Nobody was aware of the trouble that lurked outside the front door. Sherlock and Dr. Watson investigated the wills that Ms. Stoner s mother left behind; all of a sudden there was a knock at the ... Australian Aborigines And Their Crisis Madison Lafitte Karol Chandler Ezell Cultural Anthropology 231.001 11/17/2014 Australian Aborigines and their Crisis Australia s Aborigines are often hailed as the world s longest surviving culture, easily dating back 60,000 years, existing long before many ancient societies such as the Greeks and Romans. Since they are such an old culture many people wonder how they were able to remain in existence for so long while of culture perished around them. The answer can be found in their adaptive nature; having such a close bound with the land around them, taught the aboriginals the importance of change and adapting (Australia.gov.au). While it might be debatable that Australia s natives are the longest surviving culture, there is no doubt that the Aborigines animistic religion is the oldest existing. Their religion is ripe with multiple different gods, often represented in the forms of animals or notable landscape features. There is no one central god, instead many deities were spread across the continent of Australia, each spirit fulfilling their role in the world. Creation beings were involved in the creation of the world, ancestral beings taught humans how to hunt and make weapons, totemic beings were the original form of animals. The term Gothic suggests a genre which deals with frightening and mysterious settings by giving connotations of ghostly castles and supernatural events. The Sublime experience as stated by the critic Longinus is, …a matter of treatment. The particular form of the sublime experience that requires prepossessing objects is not only the form; it is simply the form in which enthusiasm preponderates over irony [1] . Edmund Burke a theorist stated in his works that, …Whatever is fitted in any sort to excite the ideas of pain and danger; that is to say, whatever is in any sort terrible, or is conversant about terrible objects or operates in a manner analogous to terror, is a source of the sublime [2] . The critic attempts to assemble an authoritative definition of the sublime here. Furthermore Gothic castles were built as symbols of systematic power; they were definite assertions of ambition that rested on the owner s control of others. A sense of empowerment is suggested through this idea therefore indicating to the Sublime having a dominant role in the Gothic genre. Intended to convey a disputing power, Walpole implies images of force, hierarchy, stability and command in the novel. The Castle Of Otranto, attempts to capture a sense of realism through its illustration of settings and characters. Burke commented that: whatever is fitted to produce such a tension must be productive of a passion similar to terror; and consequently must be a source of the sublime, though it should have no idea of danger connected with it [3] . Consequently the Sublime is shown to be produced by a passion which is closely related to terror, this is evident through the tension created by the settings and characters; a sense of terror is illustrated. Stephen George calls Coyotito Kino s real pearl and writes that his death will follow Kino for the rest of his life (95). In the following essay, the aim is to explore the concept of contradictions or dualities as portrayed in the novella A Clockwork Orange. A Clockwork Orange portrays the concept of good versus evil. It is usual to think of good and evil as two poles, two opposite directions, the antithesis of one another.... We must begin by doing away with this convention (Buber: 1938). One has to disagree with Buber, good and evil are two opposite poles because they both deal with different aspects and values. The conflict amongst good and evil becomes difficult in A Clockwork Orange, since the novel actually presents the fight between enforced good and evil that is done voluntary. Designing A New Design For A Distributed Operating System As the Chief Information Officer working in my business, I will be proposing a new design for the current network to attempt to improve the quality and productivity of 250 client computers and 50 servers. My first decision would be to opt to change the system to a distributed operating system (DOS). I would choose this course of action because instead of centralizing all the resources on one server, which could lead to problems in the event of a hardware failure, you could distribute them across multiple instances decreasing the likelihood of system outages, and making errors easier to deal with ( Definition of Distributed n.d). Although this model will be much more expensive to implement, I believe that it will lead to better growth in the future. The reliability of the network will be increased, which leaves room for improvement, adding more client systems, or even servers. Updating the operating system to a distributed operating system will increase the overall size and reliability of the database for subscribers to use. The current server operating system would be Windows Server 2003. I d make minor changes to the server operating system upgrading to a later version like 2008 or 2012. I chose Windows over Linux, MAC, and other server OS because I think its performance is suitable for this type of environment. Windows itself has a high support for most functions (Janowski, 2003). • 21. The Romantic Period Of Music During The Romantic Era The romantic period of music began in the 1820s and with it came a change of stylistic features. Beethoven largely impacted the new way that the music of the Romantic era was viewed. He made people perceive music as a true form of art made to be taken seriously, rather than just a fun time passer. Another reason for the change of music during that time was due to nationalism and exoticism. Nationalism promoted music, such as folk songs and dances, which was created for the purpose of supporting the nation. Exoticism had the opposite effect as nationalism. It caused audiences to listen to folk music from other nations and it allowed people to have a better understanding of unique qualities and cultures of surrounding nations. These factors led to the music during the Romantic period becoming more personal and emotion than it was in the previous classical era, although it still contained a melody, harmony, tone color, and a form. Much of the music from the Romantic era can be recognized by its melody. The melodies became wider, more irregular, and dramatic during this time. The harmony of Romantic music was further advanced as well. The composers learned how to use harmony to build the melody and intensify its emotionality, while at the same time experimenting freely with new chords. The tone color of music during this time was expanded allowing the quality of the sound of the music to improve. One of the most important changes that were made to the features of music during ... This being my first trip, I was not sure what to expect. Initially, I did not think the children would be interested in oral hygiene, however, since we promoted healthy oral hygiene through games, the children were fascinated in what we had to say and show them. It was shocking how few of these children knew how to properly floss and teaching them how to was definitely a challenge. Most of the kids were unable to grip the floss with both of their tiny hands but it was admirable how much determination they had despite their struggles, and it showed how much they really wanted to learn how to floss. Even though most of the children were actively participating, there were some who were very shy and too timid to participate, which made me realize that when I am dentist I will often be working with children who are very shy and I have to make sure that they are comfortable around me. Ultimately, this trip showed me that I am going to be working with hundreds of patients, none of which are the same and it will be my job to do whatever I can to make them comfortable in my office and care. • 29. Social Darwinism And The Progressive Era 2. Already in the late 19th century, the American Federation of Labor had begun to represent a growing segment of the American population discontented with the status quo of corporate exploitation. At the onset of the 20th century however this message began to take particular weight, as evidenced by the tripling of the AFL s membership and the rise of the Industrial Workers of the World. Labor unions, the Socialist Party and progressives as a whole took issue with the doctrine of Social Darwinism and moved forward as a somewhat united front with the goal of bringing meaningful change to American society. As America made the transition into an industrial power in the latter half of the 19th century, Social Darwinism became a prevalent method of rationalizing massive inequality and widespread poverty. This doctrine of leaving the poorest in the nation to uplift themselves from abject hardship without being provided any means to do so was exemplified as the American population became increasingly concentrated in cities. Poor families would often go without electricity or indoor toilets. Staggering inequality continued into the Progressive era. It was estimated that J.P. Morgan s financial firm controlled 40 percent of all financial and industrial capital in the nation. The media process fascinated Warhol, as did the ensuing frenzy and demand for national and international grief. He took this image and, with his unrivalled ability to capture the contemporary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This seminal work remains a masterpiece of Warhol s infatuation with the media and the cult of celebrity. With Jackie, Warhol adapted the formula he had already tested on Campbell s Soup and Coca Cola, for use on a celebrity, but in this case one whose image had unprecedented emotional strength. The president s glamorous widow had the intense sympathies of millions, and the death of her husband only enshrined her role as a cultural symbol. After John F. Kennedy s death, Jackie symbolized hope and sympathy for an entire nation, and while Jackie reminds us of his earlier works, it also creates a complex fusion between emotion and image, between Pop and popularity. Standing on the brink of his Death and Disaster series, Warhol s portrait of Jackie encapsulates celebrity s pervasive glare in the midst of personal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Pleasantville Biblical Refrences Essay The movie Pleasantville (Produced and directed by Gary Ross in 1988) is more than just your ordinary film. Pleasantville sends a message within a message. Not only is it a great film, (made popular by New Line Cinema) it contains numerous biblical references. Some of the biblical references in this film may be easier to see and understand than others. But when asked to analyze this film and critique the biblical references you will understand just how many there are. To me the most obvious relation to the bible is in a scene where the main character David (Tobey Maguire) is the first to see a fire that breaks out in a tree in his front yard. Ironically enough, the tree is on fire, but is not consumed by the flames, it s burning but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The serpent eventually persuades Eve to eat from the Tree of Knowledge . After she eats from it, she has Adam eat from it. Shortly after, they finally notice they are naked and become self conscious and cover up. God then asks about what they have done and Eve blames Adam, while Adam blames the Serpent. God curses them, and makes Eve suffer through labor and banishes both of them from the Garden of Eden. The relation in the movies comes from a scene in the end involving David and another girl from his school. Color starts to fill Pleasantville, and the girl he is sitting with in the lawn gets up and grabs a fruit of off the tree, and then she hands the fruit to David to eat, much like Eve did with Adam. As soon as they ate the fruit, it started to rain in Pleasantville for the first time ever, symbolizing God s anger, and color now completely filled Pleasantville. The discovery in books also reminds me of the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil , the books being good, and the reading of them being evil because it made people curious to as what else was out in the real world. Therefore there is an effect in both cases, the biblical one, and also the movie. Pleasantville, (before David and Jennifer) is a dream world if you will, everyone is always happy and there are never any conflicts with anyone. Once the two of them arrive however, everything changes. In Pleasantville everything is black and white, but after Jennifer has sex ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Pros And Cons Of The Transcontinental Railroad The Transcontinental Railroad and the American Government System The Transcontinental Railroad is a contiguous network of railroad track that crosses a continental landmass with terminals at different oceans or continental borders. Construction began in 1863 and concluded in 1868; the tracks stretched 1,776 miles long, connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The idea of building this monumental rail line was present in America decades before the Pacific Railroad Acts of 1862 authorized the construction. The Pacific Railroad Acts were passed because at the end of the American Civil War, the southern Democrats (who opposed the idea) were now absent from Congress; therefore, the republicans ... Established in 1842, the US House Senate Committees have looked back at the railroad and used it to advance the ways and means of transporting goods, supplies, mail, and people. Look at what it has done; it has served as an artery, moving what is needed throughout the entire nation from the Atlantic to the Pacific. From giving jobs to those minority groups and once former slaves after the Civil War, throwing the stock market and economy left and right, assisting Abraham Lincoln in winning elections and also winning the Civil War, helping rebuild the South and the nation s economy from the bottom up during the reconstruction era, taming the Wild West (which has a major direct influence on the American Government System), serving as one of the best ways of getting mail to citizens across the US, and expanding intercontinental trade to have its own manifest destiny. This railroad had a significant affect in the growth of this nation and its government. It s relationship and way it impacts the government is a result from multiple chain reactions that originated from the 1860s, 70s, 80s, etc. and I strongly believe, after all of my research, that our nations governmental system would be many decades behind if it wasn t for the transcontinental ... • 43. M ƒÄ Ori Cultural Concepts Essay Culture is not one distinct commodity. Culture is the integrated pattern of belief, human knowledge and behaviour that has transcended through generations. Māori are the indigenous people of New Zealand. Māori Culture is collectively the beliefs and ideals followed by the Māori people mainly through tradition and legend. The culture dates back to 1250 1300 Common Era (CE) when Polynesians migrated to the long white cloud and it has remained prominent to this day due to the practice of Māori cultural concepts. A cultural concept is a non tangible ideal that governs a society and cannot be physically touched . There are numerous Māori cultural concepts however I am focusing on the three I believe are most important: Mana, Tapu and Utu. I will elaborate on how these cultural concepts are important in understanding Māori culture and society. Firstly, I will begin with how mana is important in Māori society. Mana in its simplest form is authority and power. The sources of mana include: mana tupuna, mana whenua, mana tangata and mana atua. Mana tupuna is power that has been attained through descent. It ties the Māori people to their ancestors. Mana also denotes the heritage, the myths and the legends, which define their place in the world. Mana tupuna is power through descent. It aids people in self identification through attaining knowledge about their descendants. This cultural concept is correlated to Whakapapa, or genealogy. Through reciting whakapapa, Māori are able to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When pulp fiction was released the press had all eyes on him as they eagerly awaited a follow up film that they all hoped would be just as good as his previous film. When Pulp came out it was heavily reviewed and critiqued across media platforms. This was when Tarantino first started to become known as an auteur. Some critiques were calling his work art with Rolling Stones magazine saying Tarantino s twist on the pulp genre is also damn near a work of art (Peter Travers, 1994). An argument against this however is that Tarantino gets too much credit for his films and is seen as an overall Author of each film. This however is not true. When making a film there are many components. The director alone cannot control all of these components therefor he/she cannot be considered a true auteur in the eyes of the critique if they think that he/she is behind everything. For example, when it comes to editing a film, a director cannot stand behind the editor and tell them every last detail he wants in the film, this part of creativity comes from the editor alone. This is the same when it comes to cinematography. The cinematographer is the one who chooses what each shot is going to look like on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
