The Importance Of Hazards
Hazards rise from two main sources such as natural (e.g. hydrological, climatological, oceanic,
meteorological and geological) and man made (e.g. political and technological). When both the
intensity and frequency of hazardous events are on the rise, the capacity of developing countries to
reduce their vulnerability to catastrophic events and point of confinement their financial presentation
is turning into a priority. When disaster strike, nations with limited economic resilience not only
suffered from the impacts on the human life, physical infrastructure, economic assets and
environment, but also effected to the nations development endeavour (Shook, 1997).

2.1 Objective
This study will focus to analyse the current insurance market trends related to disaster risk in
developing countries where majority of global economic losses experienced and the ways to improve
the risk financing practices and insurance market links to disaster risk management.
3. Disaster risk management and insurance industry
According to UNISDR (2009), disaster can be defined as a serious disruption of the functioning of a
community or a society involving widespread human, material, economic or environmental losses and
impacts, which exceeds the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own
resources. Disaster risk is the combination of likelihood of a catastrophic event occurring; the
exposure to the affected areas; and vulnerability of the affected communities or country (Global
Reinsurance Forum, 2014). The impacts of disaster risk include not only loss of life and physical
damages but also increase the potential outbreak of secondary hazards such as diseases and negative
effect on physical, mental and social wellbeing of human being, services, social, economic and
environment sectors. Disaster risk management include avoiding or mitigating the potential of hazard
occurrence and exposure and reducing the vulnerability level by strengthening the tangible and
intangible capacities.
There are three risk management techniques such as

The Seven Year Itch Analysis
On February 25th I attended Valencia s theater production of The Seven Year Itch. It took place at
Valencia s East campus in the Black Box theater. It started at 7:30pm and lasted about two hours with
a fifth teen minute intermission. I selected this event because it was a requirement for my intro to
theater class, and also I enjoy theater. I brought with me notes and paper so I could write down my
thoughts on it. It ended up being too dark and I used my phone instead. I tried to keep what it was
exactly about out of my mind. I wanted to go into it with an open mind. The lightening evoked flask
backs. I personally enjoyed how the lighting was done. I could clearly separate from what was current
and what was in the character past or thoughts.

Managing Red Tape From The Point Of View Of A Business...
This article provided insight on managing red tape from the point of view of a business founder. The
author who founded the Virgin Group of companies describes red tape as a hinderance to startup
companies, as if its intended purpose was to limit or prevent success. The author uses his experience
with founding companies to elaborate on the cautionary measures a startup must take as it grows to
prevent the hierarchy of bureaucracy from taking over. The author illustrates his point by using the
example of the Tesla automobile company s recent clash with the state of New Jersey caused by the
companies desire to sell their electric automobiles directly to customers, although state statutes call for
automobiles to be sold through auto ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author s comments about Airbnb are shorter, presumably due to the fact that they adhere to the
rules and regulations laid before the company instead of refusing to accept them and accusing a
government official of illegal activity in the manor Musk chose to. This article strongly suggests the
common opinion on red tape, rules, and regulations implemented by government is that they are a
hassle, they prevent success, and their purpose is to create obstacles for startup companies. Perhaps
this article s intent of advice is skewed, but it effectively raises the questions of how can red tape be
monitored and applied to the necessary recipients in a way that they respect and understand the
necessary process? Büschgens, Thorsten, Andreas Bausch, and David B. Balkin. Organizational

Marketing, Web Design and Web Development
Web design is a blend of creativity and technicality, or graphic design and web development. As a
result of this blend the industry s necessary skills, necessary education, and job offerings can be
variable. Individuals interested in this industry should attempt to vary their skill sets as much as
possible. Companies such as a Forix, combine marketing, design and technical skills to customize
their products. Additionally, individuals should expect to discover that some careers will rely more
heavily on technical skills, while other careers rely more heavily on design skills.
The web design and development industry are relatively new. This modern industry was built off of
the inventions of 1974, when computer researchers invented the internet protocol suite (TCP/IP).
TCP/IP is somewhat like human communication: when we speak to each other, the rules of grammar
provide structure to language and ensure that we can understand each other and exchange ideas.
Similarly, TCP/IP provides the rules of communication that ensure interconnected devices understand
each other so that they can send information back and forth. (Google Chrome Team, 2010, pg. 5).
It was not until 1989 that the internet was conceived. A man named Tim Berners Lee created the
World Wide Web server through HTML or, hypertext markup language. Just like humans have a
standard of living, the internet had not reached a suitable

The Feminist Approach
Feminist literary criticism is approach that is most concerned with the role of women within the
context of literature. This includes how female characters are created and understood within any given
text, in addition to the role of female authors and female readers. This paper shall focus on some of the
theoretical concepts which have been contributed to the feminist literary discourse. It shall compare
and contrast aspects of theory put forth by three prominent feminist critics, while also considering the
arguments raised by three écriture feminine scholars. The feminist critics to be considered in this essay
are Simone de Beauvoir, Elaine Showalter, Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar. Their arguments about
the role of sexual difference, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Showalter also refers to this approach as gynocritics , appropriated from the French terminology la
gyncritique (147). What this approach relies upon for its focus of analysis is the role women
themselves play in the creation and understanding of literature. The focus then is upon literature
created by women themselves, and is not limited in its analysis to female characters because of this.
Showalter describes this approach as more self contained and experimental, with connections to other
modes of new feminist research (147). One of the majour goals in literary criticism that the gynocritic
approach aims for is the creation of a specialized language unique to the criticism of female created
literature. This is required, Showalter describes, in order to truly step away from the male dominated
rhetoric often associated and employed in the criticism otherwise. The third feminist critique to
discuss is put forth by the theorists Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar, from their text, The Madwoman
in the Attic . Within this text, Gilbert and Gubar discuss the phenomenon in male authored texts of
creating two very distinct binary roles which categorize their female characters. The female characters
within these texts are either angels, so to speak, or monsters. As Gilbert and Gubar identify, for every
angelically selfless Snow White must be

SHORT TERM AND LONG TERM GOALS
Setting personal goals in my life are important to me because I want to strive for personal
Excellence. I hope that as long as I live I will strive to excel and learn. Achievement of a short term
goal leads to a long term goal and it never ends unless I will it to end. Since I m passionate about
learning and setting goals I believe I will continue to learn and achieve new goals. One goal I am
working on now is learning how to write an excellent paper, in proper APA format.

Theory Of Tests Of Passive Sufficiency Essay
KPE160H1F FUNDAMENTALS OF HUMAN MOVEMENT
ASSIGNMENT #1
1. Theory of Tests of Passive Sufficiency (3 marks)
a. In order to test the passive sufficiency of a bi articular structure, such as a muscle, both joints which
that structure crosses must first be identified. Additionally, the movements of those two joints which
will constrain that structure must be identified. Next, one joint must be selected, and placed into the
position that may constrain the structure. At the same time, the other joint must be placed in the
position which will not put further strain on that structure. The selected joint must then be measured
for its range of motion. Next, the same must be done with the selected joint, but in contrast, the other
joint must be placed in the position which WILL further constrain the bi articular structure. Once that
has been done, the selected joint s range of motion must be measured once more.
If the range of motion of the selected joint is equal when the other joint is in both positions, the bi
articular structure is passively sufficient. If the range of motion of the selected joint is smaller in the
selected joint when the other joint is in a position that will put further strain on the bi articular
structure, that structure is not passively sufficient.
b. The rectus femoris crosses both the hip and knee. In order to test its passive sufficiency, either of
the joints ranges of motion could be measured. In this example, range of motion will be measured at

Spiritual Development From A Cognitive Perspective
Spiritual Development from a Cognitive Perspective Emily Werst Biola University Rosemead School
of Psychology Spiritual development has been explored for the past 30 years (Love, 2002) and has
become a growing source of knowledge that adds to our understanding of the human experience
across the lifespan. The purpose of the current work is to investigate spiritual development,
particularly from a cognitive developmental perspective. The theories and findings that will be
discussed aim to support the assertion that an individual s cognitive development has a profound
impact on his or her spiritual development; the two go hand in hand, and an understanding of an
individual s current stage of cognitive development has profound implications for the spiritual
development of that individual. This idea will be supported by first reviewing the foundational
understanding of Piaget s cognitive stages of development. From there, Harms s theories will begin to
draw spiritual implications from cognitive development, which will lead us to an exploration of
Fowler s (2004) developmental theory of faith. Finally, Parks (2000) shall bring both cognitive and
spiritual development together in her developmental model of faith. Park s theory provides a robust
model, supporting the idea that an individual s cognitive development has a profound impact on his or
her spiritual development. Though both involve distinct developmental stages throughout an
individual s lifespan, it is

The Industrial Revolution During The 19th Century
During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain, and the
working class worked tirelessly to produce products. Textiles were made faster and cheaper, food was
more abundant, and the standard of living increased for many people. To industrialize Great Britain,
laborers worked in factories and mills under horrible conditions. Despite attempts by Parliament to
address problems with the factories working conditions through the passage of new legislation, their
effort was inadequate and deplorable working conditions remained.
Before the 19th century, the cottage industry flourished. All business and manufacturing was carried
out in a person s home, and they had a say in what happened to their product. ... Show more content

The growing businesses put the small in home workers out of work, giving them no choice but to get a
job in a factory. The working conditions in factories and mills were much different than the ones in the
cottage industry. Instead of working at an individual pace in their home, the workers were suddenly
expected to work in onerous conditions. The Factory Act of 1819 was one of the first attempts to
control child labor, but the act was not effective. Years later, the Factory Act of 1833 was introduced,
and the new law prohibited laborers under age 9 and set the maximum number of hours for children
based on age. The Ten Hours act of 1847 limited women and children to 10 hours in the factory. These
laws were meant to change society and the working conditions, but the lack of a strong penalty for
factory owners gave them no motivation to follow the laws. In some cases, there was little to no
legislation on some of the deplorable working conditions, and there was inadequate control over the
health of laborers One of the most recognized conditions of the Industrial Revolution is the long
hours. In most factories, children from as early as age six to adult women and men were required to
work 12 or more hours six days a week. The exhausting work caused the workers to be prone to
sickness and to be weaker. In most cases, workers would fall asleep while working, causing them to
receive injuries and make mistakes in their work. If caught sleeping while

The -for and Against Argument with Regards to Innate and...
Q.1 In your own words, detail the for and against argument with regards to innate and learned
behaviour. Feel free to include your own opinion, but be sure to justify it. Try to include an equal
amount of information for the both sides. Use at least 500 words for your answer. For many years
psychologists have been researching behaviour patterns from birth. This is where the Nature vs
Nurture debate begins. Nativists believe that humans are born with various skills needed to survive,
where as Empircist believe that humans acquire all or almost of all their behavioural traits from
nurture . Some behaviours are innate, unlearned and instinctive. From the moment we are born there
are instinctive motions that we do. An example of this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We were both encouraged to breast feed and having had daughters only a few months apart we shared
the experience for a short period of time. My sister struggled, with my niece unable to latch onto her
for several weeks. Feeding time soon became a very traumatic experience for both parties, however
my daughter and I had a completely different experience. From the first feed we had success, it
continued that way for many months. Later my sister learnt that her daughter had had colic , which is a
condition in which an otherwise healthy baby cries or displays symptoms of distress frequently and for
extended periods of time, without any discernible cause. With this information in mind, it left me
wondering whether it in fact took my niece a longer period of time to learn how to breast feed, or if
the natural motion was there but her colic condition prevented this from happening. Nurture,
historically was referred to as the care given to children by their parents, with a mothers role being of
particular importance. This term is now regarded as any environmental factor including external
family, their peers, as well as extending influences such as media. BINNS (1965) demonstrated this
experimentally. He studied babies less than 5 days old and found clear differences in a babies
reactions to being suddenly disturbed. [ref1] (Ahrens 1954), stated that from the 2nd to the 7th month

What Impact Does A Difficult Temperament Have On Social...
What impact does a difficult temperament have on social competence in preschool children?
The ability to regulate emotions, thoughts, and behaviors while controlling impulses all have to do
with self management and regulation. These social related skills are impacted by one s own
temperament. Though temperament is believed to be present at birth, research indicates that there are
many environmental factors that can influence temperament. Originally, research on temperament
traits in young children were focused on a child s genetic disposition at birth. However; today,
environmental influences are considered to be equally important to the influence of a child s
temperament development as inborn predispositions. Temperament impacts the young child in many
ways, especially in the development of social competence as it relates to the ability to empathize with
others and in the development of relationship skills including ability to effectively communicate.
Rudasill, Reio, and Stipanovic (2010) research also reiterated that teachers who create positive,
nurturing, and affectionate classroom environments are more likely to have students who flourish and
assert positive social skills when managing social and behavioral challenges.
Definition of Difficult Temperament
Michael P. McCreery in his article Temperament as a Behavioral Construct, defined temperament as
the biological makeup of an individual shaped over time by heredity, maturity, and experiences.

Income Tax And Tax Rates
Income Tax
As the name implies income tax is a percentage of a person s income but it is not quite as simple as
the percentage changes depending on how much you earn on average in a year (See Figure 1) ergo if
you make more money you pay a larger amount of income tax, however most people get a Personal
Allowance of £10,000 a year which you don t pay tax on therefore if you don t earn more than this
amount you aren t required to pay any form of income tax. There are certain forms of income which
you don t pay tax for example certain state benefits, interest on savings, rental income below £4,250
and premium bonds.

19.68% this fiscal year but is much lower than the North American average of 33.25% this fiscal year

VAT
VAT is a form of tax which is taken from the majority of goods and services, as well as certain goods
imported into the UK outside the EU. VAT can be taken from both B2B and B2C transactions carried
out by a business and can reclaim the VAT paid for goods and services required for the business. There
are three rates of VAT, Standard (20%), Reduced (5%), Zero (0%) and certain are exempt from VAT or
aren t included in the UK VAT system. To be able to register to be able to use VAT you must first pass
the VAT threshold which is currently £81,000, meaning your company must have had a turnover at or
above £81,000 to be eligible to apply. The rate of VAT changes over time depending on the economic
climate for example during 2008 VAT rates dropped to 15% and by 2010 they increased to 17.5% until
2011 when they raised to todays 20% rate. This change in VAT rates can help to determine when a

peacefully because she had school in the morning. I told my girlfriend that I was going to call her

this point I knew that I was not going to let drive my vehicle because she is so mad at this point, and

A Research Report On Dual Career Couples Essay
Six primary source research reports were examined for this Review of Literature and it became
evident that there were two common themes. These two common themes were shown to negatively
affect dual career couples in five out of the six primary source research reports that the student has
studied over a period of time. Theme one is occupational issues that lead to dual career marital
conflict. Theme two is support/psychological issues that lead to marital conflict.
Theme 1
The first common theme that the student has found is the occupational issues that lead to conflict in
dual career marriages. One of the major issues that the student had to consider during this process was
occupational similarities and differences. In the research from Reed and Reed, Werbel and Hames, and
Rochlen and O Brien studied the negative effects that an occupation can have on a marriage when
both spouses work in the same company. Researchers Reed and Reed study occupational mobility;
researchers want to find how dual career couples who work within the same governmental position
will react to relocations. While researchers Werbel and Hames examined the attitudes and views that
supervisors and employees have on dual career couples who work in the same company. Finally,
researchers Rochlen and O Brien study the occupational problems that men have and why they will or
will not seek career advice; they evaluate how this can cause conflict within a marriage.

Effectiveness of Relapse Prevention Therapy
Effectiveness of Relapse Prevention Therapy
Effectiveness of Relapse Prevention Therapy
Relapse prevention therapy involves employing cognitive behavioral techniques to reduce the
recurrence of relapse. One approach to relapse prevention is mindfulness based cognitive therapy
(MBCT), which was designed to reduce rates of relapse based on systematic training in mindfulness
meditation combined with cognitive behavioral therapy methods. MBCT is an 8 week group therapy
intervention that consists of 8 to 15 patients per group and sessions typically lasted 2 hours over 8
consecutive weeks with four follow up sessions in the following year. MBCT for depression also
teaches people to become more aware of their thoughts and feelings contributing to recurring
depressive episodes.
Another intervention that is commonly used is relapse prevention group therapy (RP), which believes
that addiction treatment should include a comprehensive behavioral therapy to address the
psychological factors contributing to relapse. The 50 participants that were included in the relapse
prevention therapy condition for heroin dependence and addiction were divided into 4 groups of 12 to
13 people per group and one instructor lead the sessions. Group sessions took place 2 to 3 times per
week and each session would run 90 minutes long focusing on a specific topic. Relapse prevention
therapy has shown significant improvements in reducing the recurrence of relapse for heroin and
depressive episodes.

Best Buy Failure
Best Buy s Failure in China

Best Buy Co. is a multinational retailer of consumer electronics, home office products, entertainment
products and related services 1. The group is the largest U.S consumer electronics retailer by revenue.
In 2006, Best Buy made its first steps in China with the acquisition of a Jiangsu Five Star, a Chinese
retailer and opened its first Chinese store under its name in Shanghai, soon followed by eight others.
With a consumer focused strategy, Best Buy was hoping to capture part of the electronics retailing
market, so far dominated by the local retailers Gome and Suning. However, in 2008 ... Show more

The company is now having problems competing with online retailers. Amazon s example speaks for
itself since its brand increased by 32% in 2011 while Best Buy declined by 11%.6
Whilst Best Buy is now the largest electronics retailer in the US, Amazon has seen its revenues grow
at a much faster rate and is expected to take the number one position by 2012. Best Buy s net income
is down
30% to 154 million for 2011 fiscal year.7 The company s CEO, Brian Dunn, has recently resigned
because of inappropriate personal conduct allegations. Best Buy s stock price continues to set new 52
week lows.
In order to improve its situation, the company plans to reduce store locations and sizes.8
Moreover, Best Buy is struggling with an excess of overhead costs because it is a brick and mortar
retailer and therefore it has large operational costs to run and maintain its locations. There are a lot of
factors that contribute to the overhead costs. In addition to paying rent for the leased locations, Best
Buy also incurs real estate taxes, insurance, and area maintenance fees, which the company has to
incur to stock products on its sleeves. These overhead costs have to be reflected in the price of the
products offered, thus preventing Best Buy to compete on price alone with online retailers.
Finally, another current and important disadvantage for Best Buy is

The Pros And Cons Of Malcolm X
Throughout our nation s history, people have been doing things, both significant and unnoticed, to
promote change in our country. Some of the earliest activists were those living in America and
attacking British tax collectors to oppose the British reign in America clear up until the United States
of America decided to part from the King all together. Later there were individuals like Harriet
Tubman, who wanted to bring an end to slavery and contributed to the cause by helping slaves escape
from their plantations. Regardless of the time period or the cause for the activists, those individuals
are still an important part of the country. It is important that we continue to have activists who stand
up for what they believe in, in order to get change to occur in the way the government handles certain
issues. A lesser known modern activist, Kirsten Gillibrand, is continuing to stand up for what she ...

Priming Is Manipulating A Faster Response For A Target Word
A multiplicity of stimuli is continuously assaulting our senses of which some are pertinent to the
current task and some which are irrelevant. Xxxxxx suggest because of this bombardment, goal
directed behaviour needs a great degree of choosiness when processing information. According to
Deutsch and Deutsch (1963) understanding the mechanisms used in the multifaceted processes of
selecting, analysing and processing incoming stimuli along with the limitations underlying these
processes it is not a fully understood area. (GULAN and VALERJEV 2010). Priming is manipulating a

there is evidence perception occurs without conscious awareness. They also argue not only is
perception without awareness possible but that qualitative differences in processing and performances

motivation of wanting to learn for themselves.
Again, due to the fact that children s interests and experiences are used to form a platform for

Susan Minot Summary
LUST.
Having read the story written by Susan Minot we come across a rather complicated character, to be
precise the narrator herself. The girl in the story has been studying in the boarding school. It is the
educational establishment of close type, so the process of growing proceeds differently. For example if
we compare the girls from public schools and the girls from boarding schools the latest will be more
dissolute. The main reason for this is the closed social environment which fluencies the young girls
minds. So let us look closer at the narrator she was ...good at such things like math or painting or even
sports, but the second a boy put his arm around her, she forgot about wanting to do anything else...
This phrase indicates the author s real attitude towards men and studying. She loved being in
relationships with young boys. Moreover, while being in the boarding school she had at least 5 or 6
partners. At the same time the narrator stresses that: Lots of boys, but never two at the same time. One
was plenty to keep you in a state. So for her a man is a tool, which can keep her in shape. To our way
of thinking it is a rather thoughtless attitude towards the relationship. Furthermore, from the
conversation with the headmistress Mrs. Gunther it becomes obvious that the narrator is astonished
having known that she has had only the one man for her life. But to be honest the headmistress has her
own understanding of the relations between the man and the woman, and it is

European Colonialism
In the fourth group of documents, Texts from the Modern World, the common theme in all five
primary sources is European colonialism. The documents show different beliefs and notions about
European Colonialism drawing from the point of view of both its beneficiaries and its victims; out of
the five documents three were written by people of European descent and two were written by
indigenous people. Europeans, such as Rudyard Kipling, John Stuart Mill, and Lewis Cass, see
colonialism as being a mutually beneficial relationship between Europeans and the indigenous people
they encounter. They believe that they there are not only benefitting economically from colonialism,
but that they are also doing a good to the human race by introducing the indigenous people they
encounter to civilization. While some indigenous people refuted European efforts of Westernization,
others fought for the right to benefit economically and socially from colonialism, and argued that the
Europeans were not keeping their promise to them. In the document, On Colonies and Colonization,
John Stuart Mill makes an argument in support of European colonization. Mill recognized that
colonization was boosting the English economy, but he took his argument further, saying The question
of government intervention in the work of Colonization involves the future and permanent interest of
civilization itself, and far outstretches the comparatively narrow limits of purely economic
considerations. In his opinion,

Internal Conflict Of William Shakespeare s Macbeth
Internal conflict is represented throughout Macbeth following his descent from hero to decapitated
tyrant. In Act I.vii Macbeth is debating with himself whether to kill the king or not which reveals
internal conflict between his virtue and his hamartia, ambition. He says, that we but teach bloody
instructions, which being taught, return to plague the inventor , this shows Macbeth focusing on the
practicalities of killing Duncan rather than the ethics or morality of it, he is more worried of the
possibility it could lead to his own murder, this portrays a moment of clarity that foreshadows his own
fate. The phrase teach bloody instructions is vocabulary of war and revenge which gives a hint of a
soldier s mindset. He later goes to say i am his kinsman and his subject, strong both against the deed;
then, as his host, who should against his murderer shut the door, not bear the knife myself. ,
structurally he has now moved on to the ethics and morality of the murder, he knows it s wrong
showing he still has a moral compass however the morality was a later thought showing that his
morals have been mixed up and shows a hint of a psychotic mind. He then leaves us with the line I
have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition, which o erleaps itself and falls
on the other , this conveys self awareness, he knows his major flaw is his ambition, the word vaulting
suggests his ambition is so strong that it jumps out of him and drives him into situations

Essay In Defense of Food
ENGWR 301
13 February 2014
In Defense of Pollan When Michael Pollan s book The Omnivore s Dilemma was published, many
readers began questioning him for advice on what they should eat in order to stay healthy. In his more
recent book, In Defense of Food, he responds with three rules, Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants
(Pollan 1). This seven word response seems too simple for a relatively complicated question, but as he
further elaborates these rules into specific guidelines, this summary turns out to be surprisingly
complete. Using inductive and deductive reasoning, he debunks the ideas behind nutritionism and
food science, and proves that the western diet is the cause for food related diseases. Inductive
reasoning is when a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While nutritionism is suppose to scientifically guide us to eat healthy, Pollan points out that there is no
scientific evidence to back it. Instead, he provides research conducted by Harvard nutrition scientist
that proves the opposite. In the public s mind [...] words like low fat and fat free have been
synonymous with heart health. It is now increasingly recognized that low fat campaign has been based
on little scientific evidence and may have caused unintended health consequences. (Pollan 43). In
Based off these observations, Pollan uses inductive reasoning to draw the conclusion that nutritionism
is more harmful then helpful. When Pollan s states to eat food as his first rule, he means exactly that,
eat real food. While this statement seems so obvious that it shouldn t need to be a rule, Pollan explains
how we are trapped by the Western diet and that access to real food over highly processed food
products is harder then it seems. Taking food s place on the shelves has been an unending stream of
foodlike substitutes, some seventeen thousands new ones every year (Pollan 147). For those that don t
know, the Western diet is a term coined to describe our pattern of eating, which is characterized by lots
of processed foods and meat, lots of added fat and sugar, lots of everything except fruits, vegetables,
and whole grains (Pollan 89). Using deductive reasoning,

Coming Of Age Ceremony Essay
Every year on the third Monday in May, Korea celebrates the coming of age ceremony for young men
and women turning 19 in that year. Aside from the ceremonies in different parts of the country, there is
also an award ceremony to laud exemplary young adults. The usual gifts for this day are popularly
given as a bouquet of red roses and, if lucky, a first kiss. Champagne and perfume are other two
options with high tech gadgets being the latest addition these days.
Despite the western appearance however, the coming of age ceremony has its own tradition dating as
far as the Goryeo Dynasty (918 1392). The first written record of Korea s coming of age ceremony is
found in 965, during King Gwangjong s reign (925 975). It was written at the time that the young

Their coming of age ceremony would take place in the year they turned 15 and they would be taught
the virtues of a woman. They too would visit ancestral shrines to inform the heaven of their maturity.
The ritual would be called a gyerye.
The coming of age ritual was a prerequisite for both men and women to get married.
As recently as the mid 1950s it was quite common to see traditional coming of age rites held in towns
and villages with the attendance of the elderly. By the latter half of the 20th century however, the
influx of western culture and its manner of enjoying the rite of passage into adulthood came to replace
traditional rites more and more.
In 1999, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in order to resurrect the tradition, came up with
standardized coming of age rites to be practiced in schools and towns. The purpose was to remind
young people of the pride and dignity of traditional culture and teach the true meaning of being a

Illegal Drug Trade and Ecstasy Widely Range
Ecstasy, also known as MDMA (Methylenedioxcymethamphetamine), is a dangerous drug that should

Ecstasy was first synthesized in 1912 by a German company possibly to be used as an appetite

the drug (Morrissey 4). Ecstasy is known to produce both stimulant and psychedelic effects that will

Alcohol Abuse And Alcohol Use Disorder
A brief history of alcohol and its use, alcohol has been around since the birth of man. Alcohol has been
used for medical reasons, as well as recreational use. As far as historians can tell, the abuse of Alcohol
had been around just as long. But people haven t considered it some type of disorder until the 19th
century. In 1819, German Doctor C. W. Hufeland coined the term Dipsomania. Dipsomania was the
uncontrollable craving for alcohol. In 1849, Dipsomania became known as Alcoholism. In the 1920 s,
Alcoholism was so bad and out of controll, that America had a Prohibition Period in which alcohol
was illegal. In the DSM IV, there were two different and distinct disorders (or subtypes) involving
alcohol. Both of these disorders (or subtypes) had their own criteria. They were Alcohol Abuse
Disorder, and Alcohol Dependence Disorder. The DSM V merge the two together and as a result, it is
now called Alcohol Use Disorder. An interesting fact, under the new DSM V criteria, as much as 31%
of college students may meet the criteria of Alcohol Use Disorder.
AUD (Alcohol Use Disorder) has 3 sub classifications: Mild, Moderate, and Severe. Mild AUD is the

doing a task wrong, but it won t notice. This makes it important that there is constant human
supervision. Robots also tend to be very pricey. This is because of the many parts in a robot which are
needed to accomplish a task. The future of robotics is coming to us very quickly. Soon, other different
robots will emerge. Nanotechnology creates robots which cannot be seen with the human eye. These
robots can be used in medicine, or they can be used for surgery. Another idea is for robots to change
their form based on the task which they are doing. There is also the idea of robots

Chickenpox Research Papers
Chickenpox also known as, varicella is defined as, an acute contagious disease especially of children
marked by low grade fever and formation of vesicles and caused by a herpesvirus, via the Merriam
Webster dictionary. Chickenpox which used to be a common virus has now decreased in its cases due
to a vaccine introduced in the 1990s. It is now a highly encouraged thing for parents to get done for
their baby.
Chickenpox is caused by varicella zoster. The virus is extremely contagious and can be passed down
when in contact with another infectious person. When in contact the virus can be spread by; saliva,
coughing, sneezing, and contact with the actual blisters. It is very easy to detect chickenpox with the
symptoms, even though it is sometimes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reason being pregnant could be such a problem is because your child could suffer from birth
defects like, poor growth, small head size, eye problems, and intellectual disabilities. After visiting a
doctor a blood test may be needed for further results. Complications can occur and are when you get
in touch with a doctor immediately. Complications are things like the rash spreading to your eyes, the
rash being tender and warm, or you experience dizziness and shortness of breath.
Most patients are told to just manage their symptoms while waiting for the virus to pass. If the patient
is a child the parents a notified to keep their child out of school/daycare. Adults who get chickenpox
are also advised to stay home. For any medications, antihistamines or topical ointments are prescribed.
Taking a lukewarm bath, applying unscented lotion, and wearing light weight, soft clothing are all
ways to help tone down the itching of the rash. High risk patients will have antiviral drugs perscribed
if needed. High risk patients are usually ones that are elderly, young, or have underlying medical

Pros And Cons Of Biotechnology

Ten Reasons Why Biotechnology Will Not Ensure Food Security, Protect the Environment and
Reduce Poverty in the Developing World
An article written by Miguel A. Altieri and Peter Rosset (1999) addresses certain potential issues and
misconceptions about biotechnology. For instance, this article suggests that biotechnology will not
ensure food security, protect the environment, and will not reduce poverty in the developing world.
The article points out that there is no relationship between a hungry country and its population, and
that the world produces more food than ever before. The real cause of hunger is not the lack of food
but the lack of resources to buy it and the lack of land for people to grow their own food. New
improvements in biotechnology will not reduce hunger as the vast majority of improvements in
biotechnology have been created not because companies want to improve the agriculture or reduce
hunger, but because they want to make a profit. An example provided says that new biotechnical
innovations increase expenses per acre for seeds plus chemicals, which results in a lower return to the
growers growers are spending more than what they making. Discount packages are offered by
biotechnology companies, but only when purchasing technology packages.
Additionally, recent studies have shown that genetic engineered seeds do not increase the yield of the
crops. In 1998 a study conducted by the USDA

Identity In Shakespeare s Romeo And Juliet
To thine own self be true is a respected age old saying, but while it epitomises the value of self
understanding and integrity, society often forces false identities onto individuals. What ensues is a
culture where we constantly act in a way that is not genuine to who we are, to please family, friends
and to follow society s pattern. Revered writer William Shakespeare addresses this theme over
multiple texts, namely Romeo and Juliet, in which two star cross d lovers challenge their identities
with true love, and ultimately forfeit their lives as a result. Shakespeare presents the notion that
despite the pain and suffering that may come with being true to oneself, it is necessary to achieve
authenticity regardless of these consequences. He proves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus it is hard for Juliet to challenge her family to be true to herself and be with Romeo, as this
challenge could lead to death. In a similar encounter, Romeo decides that he must reconcile with
Tybalt as being with Juliet is being true to himself, and being with Juliet means becoming kin of
Tybalt. He completely disregards his status as a Montague and his hate for Capulets to prove his
sincerity, by stating, And so, good Capulet which name I tender as dearly as my own be satisfied. This
is another scenario in which Shakespeare shows the pain that comes with challenging identity, by
killing Romeo s dear friend Mercutio in the fight that ensues. The highly revered modern film Dead
Poet s Society (1989) continues Shakespeare s theme through Neil s journey. Neil attends an elite
private school and his parents wish for him to be a doctor, but his true passion is acting. Upon
deciding that [He s] gonna do it! Whether [his] father wants [him] to or not! (ref) He commits to
acting, yet his family don t accept him for his true self, only what they want him to be. As a result he
falls into depression and commits suicide. This is again evident of the pain that can follow one
becoming their true

Disruptions In Schools
The United States is known as the land of the free because it grants its citizens the right to be
protected by the law. Unless they are being used unconstitutionally, their right to freedom of speech
cannot be violated. As citizens, students obtain these same rights. For example, religious tolerance in
schools assures that they are not treated unfairly. Students under suspicion are searched to insure
safety in the school and to secure peace among their students and staff. Disruptions in schools are
usually caused by students actions that affect their peers ability to learn. This makes it a goal for
public schools to maintain an educational and safe environment. However, human rights of students
are being violated in order to ensure peace. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Under the law, U.S. citizens have the right to be informed of the rules they violate, they must have a
hearing in which they explain the situation. In this case, Students often break their school s rule of
conduct, in response there would be a punishment established on the student to assume responsibility.
They are often given longer punishments such as suspensions and expulsions, the longer the
punishment, a hearing is needed. The right to due process must happen in respect of the accused, the

Students are protected against the unfair treatment of their schools from limiting their privilege given

It started at 7:30pm and lasted about two hours with a fifth teen minute intermission. I selected this event because it was a requirement for my intro to theater class, and also I enjoy theater. I brought with me notes and paper so I could write down my thoughts on it. It ended up being too dark and I used my phone instead. I tried to keep what it was exactly about out of my mind. The author who founded the Virgin Group of companies describes red tape as a hinderance to startup companies, as if its intended purpose was to limit or prevent success. The author uses his experience with founding companies to elaborate on the cautionary measures a startup must take as it grows to prevent the hierarchy of bureaucracy from taking over. The author illustrates his point by using the example of the Tesla automobile company s recent clash with the state of New Jersey caused by the companies desire to sell their electric automobiles directly to customers, although state statutes call for automobiles to be sold through auto ... The author s comments about Airbnb are shorter, presumably due to the fact that they adhere to the rules and regulations laid before the company instead of refusing to accept them and accusing a government official of illegal activity in the manor Musk chose to. This article strongly suggests the common opinion on red tape, rules, and regulations implemented by government is that they are a hassle, they prevent success, and their purpose is to create obstacles for startup companies. Perhaps this article s intent of advice is skewed, but it effectively raises the questions of how can red tape be monitored and applied to the necessary recipients in a way that they respect and understand the necessary process? Marketing, Web Design And Web Development Kira Godwin CST 300 September 23, 2014 Marketing, Web Design and Web Development Web design is a blend of creativity and technicality, or graphic design and web development. As a result of this blend the industry s necessary skills, necessary education, and job offerings can be variable. Individuals interested in this industry should attempt to vary their skill sets as much as possible. Companies such as a Forix, combine marketing, design and technical skills to customize their products. Additionally, individuals should expect to discover that some careers will rely more heavily on technical skills, while other careers rely more heavily on design skills. The web design and development industry are relatively new. This modern industry was built off of the inventions of 1974, when computer researchers invented the internet protocol suite (TCP/IP). TCP/IP is somewhat like human communication: when we speak to each other, the rules of grammar provide structure to language and ensure that we can understand each other and exchange ideas. Similarly, TCP/IP provides the rules of communication that ensure interconnected devices understand each other so that they can send information back and forth. (Google Chrome Team, 2010, pg. 5). It was not until 1989 that the internet was conceived. A man named Tim Berners Lee created the World Wide Web server through HTML or, hypertext markup language. This includes how female characters are created and understood within any given text, in addition to the role of female authors and female readers. This paper shall focus on some of the theoretical concepts which have been contributed to the feminist literary discourse. It shall compare and contrast aspects of theory put forth by three prominent feminist critics, while also considering the arguments raised by three écriture feminine scholars. The feminist critics to be considered in this essay are Simone de Beauvoir, Elaine Showalter, Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar. Their arguments about the role of sexual difference, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Showalter also refers to this approach as gynocritics , appropriated from the French terminology la gyncritique (147). What this approach relies upon for its focus of analysis is the role women themselves play in the creation and understanding of literature. The focus then is upon literature created by women themselves, and is not limited in its analysis to female characters because of this. Showalter describes this approach as more self contained and experimental, with connections to other modes of new feminist research (147). One of the majour goals in literary criticism that the gynocritic approach aims for is the creation of a specialized language unique to the criticism of female created literature. This is required, Showalter describes, in order to truly step away from the male dominated rhetoric often associated and employed in the criticism otherwise. The third feminist critique to discuss is put forth by the theorists Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar, from their text, The Madwoman in the Attic . Within this text, Gilbert and Gubar discuss the phenomenon in male authored texts of creating two very distinct binary roles which categorize their female characters. The female characters within these texts are either angels, so to speak, or monsters. As Gilbert and Gubar identify, for every angelically selfless Snow White must be ... • 8. Theory Of Tests Of Passive Sufficiency Essay KPE160H1F FUNDAMENTALS OF HUMAN MOVEMENT ASSIGNMENT #1 1. Theory of Tests of Passive Sufficiency (3 marks) a. In order to test the passive sufficiency of a bi articular structure, such as a muscle, both joints which that structure crosses must first be identified. Additionally, the movements of those two joints which will constrain that structure must be identified. Next, one joint must be selected, and placed into the position that may constrain the structure. At the same time, the other joint must be placed in the position which will not put further strain on that structure. The selected joint must then be measured for its range of motion. Next, the same must be done with the selected joint, but in contrast, the other joint must be placed in the position which WILL further constrain the bi articular structure. • 9. Spiritual Development From A Cognitive Perspective Spiritual Development from a Cognitive Perspective Emily Werst Biola University Rosemead School of Psychology Spiritual development has been explored for the past 30 years (Love, 2002) and has become a growing source of knowledge that adds to our understanding of the human experience across the lifespan. The purpose of the current work is to investigate spiritual development, particularly from a cognitive developmental perspective. The theories and findings that will be discussed aim to support the assertion that an individual s cognitive development has a profound impact on his or her spiritual development; the two go hand in hand, and an understanding of an individual s current stage of cognitive development has profound implications for the spiritual development of that individual. This idea will be supported by first reviewing the foundational understanding of Piaget s cognitive stages of development. From there, Harms s theories will begin to draw spiritual implications from cognitive development, which will lead us to an exploration of Fowler s (2004) developmental theory of faith. Finally, Parks (2000) shall bring both cognitive and spiritual development together in her developmental model of faith. Park s theory provides a robust model, supporting the idea that an individual s cognitive development has a profound impact on his or her spiritual development. Though both involve distinct developmental stages throughout an individual s lifespan, it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. The Industrial Revolution During The 19th Century During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain, and the working class worked tirelessly to produce products. Textiles were made faster and cheaper, food was more abundant, and the standard of living increased for many people. To industrialize Great Britain, laborers worked in factories and mills under horrible conditions. Despite attempts by Parliament to address problems with the factories working conditions through the passage of new legislation, their effort was inadequate and deplorable working conditions remained. Before the 19th century, the cottage industry flourished. All business and manufacturing was carried out in a person s home, and they had a say in what happened to their product. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The growing businesses put the small in home workers out of work, giving them no choice but to get a job in a factory. The working conditions in factories and mills were much different than the ones in the cottage industry. Instead of working at an individual pace in their home, the workers were suddenly expected to work in onerous conditions. The Factory Act of 1819 was one of the first attempts to control child labor, but the act was not effective. Years later, the Factory Act of 1833 was introduced, and the new law prohibited laborers under age 9 and set the maximum number of hours for children based on age. The Ten Hours act of 1847 limited women and children to 10 hours in the factory. These laws were meant to change society and the working conditions, but the lack of a strong penalty for factory owners gave them no motivation to follow the laws. In some cases, there was little to no legislation on some of the deplorable working conditions, and there was inadequate control over the health of laborers One of the most recognized conditions of the Industrial Revolution is the long hours. In most factories, children from as early as age six to adult women and men were required to work 12 or more hours six days a week. The exhausting work caused the workers to be prone to sickness and to be weaker. In most cases, workers would fall asleep while working, causing them to receive injuries and make mistakes in their work. If caught sleeping while ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Feel free to include your own opinion, but be sure to justify it. Try to include an equal amount of information for the both sides. Use at least 500 words for your answer. For many years psychologists have been researching behaviour patterns from birth. This is where the Nature vs Nurture debate begins. Nativists believe that humans are born with various skills needed to survive, where as Empircist believe that humans acquire all or almost of all their behavioural traits from nurture . Some behaviours are innate, unlearned and instinctive. From the moment we are born there are instinctive motions that we do. An example of this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We were both encouraged to breast feed and having had daughters only a few months apart we shared the experience for a short period of time. My sister struggled, with my niece unable to latch onto her for several weeks. Feeding time soon became a very traumatic experience for both parties, however my daughter and I had a completely different experience. From the first feed we had success, it continued that way for many months. Later my sister learnt that her daughter had had colic , which is a condition in which an otherwise healthy baby cries or displays symptoms of distress frequently and for extended periods of time, without any discernible cause. With this information in mind, it left me wondering whether it in fact took my niece a longer period of time to learn how to breast feed, or if the natural motion was there but her colic condition prevented this from happening. Nurture, historically was referred to as the care given to children by their parents, with a mothers role being of particular importance. This term is now regarded as any environmental factor including external family, their peers, as well as extending influences such as media. BINNS (1965) demonstrated this experimentally. He studied babies less than 5 days old and found clear differences in a babies reactions to being suddenly disturbed. [ref1] (Ahrens 1954), stated that from the 2nd to the 7th month of ... • 12. What Impact Does A Difficult Temperament Have On Social... What impact does a difficult temperament have on social competence in preschool children? The ability to regulate emotions, thoughts, and behaviors while controlling impulses all have to do with self management and regulation. These social related skills are impacted by one s own temperament. Though temperament is believed to be present at birth, research indicates that there are many environmental factors that can influence temperament. Originally, research on temperament traits in young children were focused on a child s genetic disposition at birth. However; today, environmental influences are considered to be equally important to the influence of a child s temperament development as inborn predispositions. Temperament impacts the young child in many ways, especially in the development of social competence as it relates to the ability to empathize with others and in the development of relationship skills including ability to effectively communicate. Rudasill, Reio, and Stipanovic (2010) research also reiterated that teachers who create positive, nurturing, and affectionate classroom environments are more likely to have students who flourish and assert positive social skills when managing social and behavioral challenges. Effectiveness of Relapse Prevention Therapy Effectiveness of Relapse Prevention Therapy Effectiveness of Relapse Prevention Therapy Relapse prevention therapy involves employing cognitive behavioral techniques to reduce the recurrence of relapse. One approach to relapse prevention is mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT), which was designed to reduce rates of relapse based on systematic training in mindfulness meditation combined with cognitive behavioral therapy methods. MBCT is an 8 week group therapy intervention that consists of 8 to 15 patients per group and sessions typically lasted 2 hours over 8 consecutive weeks with four follow up sessions in the following year. MBCT for depression also teaches people to become more aware of their thoughts and feelings contributing to recurring depressive episodes. If I were accepted into the program, I would try for an internship at the Department of Education, where I could gain real world experience in education policy and work among some of the most talented people in the field. Considering Donald Trump s ambitious goals for the expansion of school choice programs throughout the country, I would have the chance to witness one of the most exciting and challenging times in American education from the epicenter of policy making itself. Although I have extensively researched available internship opportunities within the Department, I do not have my eye on any single position. Fortunately, as an intern at the Department of Education, I would have the chance to participate in weekly Q A panels with officials from different areas within the department, thus exposing me to all the different subsets of education policy. Ultimately, the Washington Program would enable me to hone my interests even further and develop a better understanding of what areas of education policy most engage ... Priming Is Manipulating A Faster Response For A Target Word A multiplicity of stimuli is continuously assaulting our senses of which some are pertinent to the current task and some which are irrelevant. Generally speaking, cross curricular learning is when skills, knowledge and attitudes of a number of disciplines which are applied to a single experience, problem, question, theme or idea. In simple terms, it s also known as a thematic approach. From this point, I d be exploring the reasons why a thematic approach should be adopted in the classroom and this approach could deliver the four core subjects in the National Curriculum in Key Stage 1. Again, due to the fact that children s interests and experiences are used to form a platform for learning, the thematic approach tends to lend itself to be more motivating for pupils in conjunction with their wider life experiences, as suggested by Barnes (2009). (Mumford. • 32. Susan Minot Summary LUST. Having read the story written by Susan Minot we come across a rather complicated character, to be precise the narrator herself. The girl in the story has been studying in the boarding school. It is the educational establishment of close type, so the process of growing proceeds differently. For example if we compare the girls from public schools and the girls from boarding schools the latest will be more dissolute. The main reason for this is the closed social environment which fluencies the young girls minds. So let us look closer at the narrator she was ...good at such things like math or painting or even sports, but the second a boy put his arm around her, she forgot about wanting to do anything else... This phrase indicates the author s real attitude towards men and studying. She loved being in relationships with young boys. Moreover, while being in the boarding school she had at least 5 or 6 partners. At the same time the narrator stresses that: Lots of boys, but never two at the same time. One was plenty to keep you in a state. So for her a man is a tool, which can keep her in shape. To our way of thinking it is a rather thoughtless attitude towards the relationship. Furthermore, from the conversation with the headmistress Mrs. Gunther it becomes obvious that the narrator is astonished having known that she has had only the one man for her life. But to be honest the headmistress has her own understanding of the relations between the man and the woman, and it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The documents show different beliefs and notions about European Colonialism drawing from the point of view of both its beneficiaries and its victims; out of the five documents three were written by people of European descent and two were written by indigenous people. Europeans, such as Rudyard Kipling, John Stuart Mill, and Lewis Cass, see colonialism as being a mutually beneficial relationship between Europeans and the indigenous people they encounter. They believe that they there are not only benefitting economically from colonialism, but that they are also doing a good to the human race by introducing the indigenous people they encounter to civilization. While some indigenous people refuted European efforts of Westernization, others fought for the right to benefit economically and socially from colonialism, and argued that the Europeans were not keeping their promise to them. In the document, On Colonies and Colonization, John Stuart Mill makes an argument in support of European colonization. Mill recognized that colonization was boosting the English economy, but he took his argument further, saying The question of government intervention in the work of Colonization involves the future and permanent interest of civilization itself, and far outstretches the comparatively narrow limits of purely economic considerations. In his more recent book, In Defense of Food, he responds with three rules, Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants (Pollan 1). This seven word response seems too simple for a relatively complicated question, but as he further elaborates these rules into specific guidelines, this summary turns out to be surprisingly complete. While nutritionism is suppose to scientifically guide us to eat healthy, Pollan points out that there is no scientific evidence to back it. Instead, he provides research conducted by Harvard nutrition scientist that proves the opposite. In the public s mind [...] words like low fat and fat free have been synonymous with heart health. It is now increasingly recognized that low fat campaign has been based on little scientific evidence and may have caused unintended health consequences. (Pollan 43). In Based off these observations, Pollan uses inductive reasoning to draw the conclusion that nutritionism is more harmful then helpful. When Pollan s states to eat food as his first rule, he means exactly that, eat real food. While this statement seems so obvious that it shouldn t need to be a rule, Pollan explains how we are trapped by the Western diet and that access to real food over highly processed food products is harder then it seems. Pros And Cons Of Biotechnology Martha Zenaidi Ms. Serwin English 103 16 August 2017 Ten Reasons Why Biotechnology Will Not Ensure Food Security, Protect the Environment and Reduce Poverty in the Developing World An article written by Miguel A. Altieri and Peter Rosset (1999) addresses certain potential issues and misconceptions about biotechnology. For instance, this article suggests that biotechnology will not ensure food security, protect the environment, and will not reduce poverty in the developing world. The article points out that there is no relationship between a hungry country and its population, and that the world produces more food than ever before. The real cause of hunger is not the lack of food but the lack of resources to buy it and the lack of land for people to grow their own food. New improvements in biotechnology will not reduce hunger as the vast majority of improvements in biotechnology have been created not because companies want to improve the agriculture or reduce hunger, but because they want to make a profit. An example provided says that new biotechnical innovations increase expenses per acre for seeds plus chemicals, which results in a lower return to the growers growers are spending more than what they making. Revered writer William Shakespeare addresses this theme over multiple texts, namely Romeo and Juliet, in which two star cross d lovers challenge their identities with true love, and ultimately forfeit their lives as a result. He completely disregards his status as a Montague and his hate for Capulets to prove his sincerity, by stating, And so, good Capulet which name I tender as dearly as my own be satisfied.
